What You Can Drink During An Intermittent Fast

woman-sunset-drinking-tea

Intermittent fasting has become increasingly popular over the past couple years as an effective way to lose weight, increase energy, improve heart health, and boost brain function. Despite what it sounds like, intermittent fasting does not require you to starve yourself for a month; rather, this diet model is designed to give the body a break from food in order to focus its energy on cleansing, as opposed to digesting.

The body is filled with cell structures and proteins that continually die, which isn’t a bad thing. This natural occurrence happens in order to maintain overall bodily health. Problems arise when the body cannot efficiently eliminate these dead tissues. A build-up of these dead tissues can inhibit healthy organ function and can lead to the formation of cancerous tissue. What happens next is a process known as autophagy.

Autophagy, to put it simply, is the body’s way of identifying damaged parts of cells or unused proteins as harmful substances. Once this message is received, the immune system begins to neutralize these “threats,” a form of cellular cleansing. If autophagy cannot happen, however, then dead cells and proteins accumulate, leading to chronic inflammation. Intermittent fasting has become one of the most effective ways to stimulate autophagy.

Types Of Intermittent Fasting:

People can choose from a few different schedules when they begin the fasting diet. The takeaway is that there will be alternating periods of caloric restriction and regular food intake on a consistent basis. When you do eat the idea is not to overindulge; rather, the goal should be to maintain portion control and eat a balanced diet. The three most common types of intermittent fasting are as follows:

  • Alternate Day Fasting: This involves fasting for a 24-hour period and then eating as needed during the next 24 hours. You shouldn’t be inhaling all the food in sight; rather, you should eat until you feel content, not stuffed to the gills.
  • Whole Day Fasting: This schedule will involve fasting for one to two days (or very low calorie intake during that time), and the remaining days of the week will require eating 1,500-2,000 calories a day.
  • Time-Restricted Feeding: This is the most common type of intermittent fasting, which calls for a fasting period of about 16 hours and a feeding period of eight hours.

What Can You Drink?

With a general understanding of intermittent fasting, you may be wondering what you can drink during your fast? The obvious and best choice is filtered water. We place emphasis on hydrating because drinking water helps to curb hunger, and this helps you resist the urge to grab whatever food is in sight. Water helps to regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, and keep the digestive system running smoothly. Additionally, water helps carry oxygen to cells throughout the body, and assists with eliminating toxins and waste.

Carbonated Water:

Carbonated water is acceptable to drink on occasion during your intermittent fast, but you must be a diligent label reader. A lot of companies create carbonated water with hints of lime, grapefruit, blackberry, or other natural flavors. These are not acceptable because they can contain added sugars or artificial colors/flavors. It’s best to opt for true sparkling water that is free of added sweeteners and flavors. A great option is to add fresh fruit to sparkling water, similar to making detox waters, to diversify the flavor of your bubbly beverage.

Tea:

When people develop coughs or colds, they become tea aficionados, drinking every concoction to soothe irritation and promote decongestion. Well, intermittent fasters develop a similar affinity for tea because it is acceptable to drink during a fast, so long as they remain unsweetened. That means that you cannot use honey, agave, sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, or stevia. The reason behind not adding sweeteners is because sugars act as carbs, which contribute to weight gain and fat storage, both of which you are trying to avoid during an intermittent fast. It can be beneficial to drink green tea to help boost weight loss and suppress appetite. Try to avoid black teas and remain in the realm of green or herbal tea varieties, some of which promote probiotic balance and cellular detoxification.

Coffee:

Coffee is a low calorie beverage, but so many people add dairy products, sugar, or artificially sweetened creamers to coffee, making it an unhealthy, high-calorie beverage. A cup of unsweetened black coffee is acceptable on occasion during an intermittent fast, but make sure not to go overboard. Due to the limited caloric intake, drinking a lot of coffee can leave you feeling anxious, jittery, and unable to function. Additionally, too much coffee can affect your sleep cycle.

What To Avoid:

“Zero-calorie” beverages, diet sodas, and any sugary beverages should be avoided at all times. The sugars in most beverages digest quickly, spiking blood sugar levels and leaving you craving more. The average American consumes an excess amount of sugar from beverages, and the body cannot burn it fast enough. Leftover sugar is stored as fat, and this can result in fluctuating energy levels.

Q: I will be starting a fast for Ramadan in August. What suggestions do you have for cleansing during fasting? I do not eat meat except, fish 1-2 times a week. I've been having problems with gas after eating, even fruits or veggies. I usually have 2-3 bowel movements per day. I am a 56 year old male with good health, except for my problems with gas, varicose veins and leg cramps especially during fasting.

    A:

Cleanses for Ramadan should be LIQUID-based i.e. Liquid Full Body Detox, or perhaps drinking herbal teas i.e. Detox Tea. To combat or counter your gas (flatulence), start consuming Activated Charcoal (Carbon) 1 teaspoon in a glass of water daily (anytime of the day you feel like it). Work on your colon too. We suggest you try our 10-Day Supreme Colon Cleanse to help this problem of gas.

Q: I started my full body detox program yesterday and this morning I stopped into Jamba Juice to get a wheatgrass shot. I also got a pomegranate juice, strawberry, peach and mango drink with a mega green tea boost...I drank maybe about 4 oz of the drink and trashed it. I had the worst headache I've ever experienced in my life! Was it from the sugar in the juice? They claim to be all-natural or was it from the fasting? Would you recommend this establishment for those seeking to get their body clean?

    A:

It's best to stay on raw fruit and vegetable juices during your detox. Or, try some of the recipes for smoothies, vegetable juice, and delicious herbal teas mentioned and listed in the Full Body Detox Companion ($20)

Q: I am in need of cleansing my body and weight removal! (Removal and not loss because I don't want to find it again)! I need to remove about 80 pounds of unhealthy weight from my body and would like to do so in a natural way. I looked at both your Female Cleanse and the Full Body Cleanse, but don't know which is a better option for me to follow right now? I eat a lot of organic foods, I juice (some) but need to increase my water intake (A LOT). I don't drink much soda at all and when I do it is organic carbonated lemonade. I realize carbonated drinks are not good for us and limit how much I drink. My body lets me know when I have eaten something that is not good for me by causing my hands and feet to swell. To reduce this I drink water. I am allergic to wheat and try to stay away from it as much as possible. I have few ailments and have started working out again (cardio and weight training). I also looked at your weight loss products, but thought I should maybe detox first. What do you think? Any assistance you can offer on your products and which ones I should take is of great appreciation.

A: The best thing for you is the Full Body Cleanse. The Full Body Cleanse will allow you to remove unwanted weight, while also optimizing your entier body so that you can maintain that weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: I love to drink water, but I like to drink hot water you know boiling water slightly cooled. Is there a benefit, or disadvantage to this compared to drinking room temperature water? Secondly, the water I drink is boiled water. Alkaline water is not a privilege most Kenyans have. If 56% of the population is living below poverty line you do the math. So the water I drink is tap water, that I boil to make it safe for drinking. When I get to work I have Alkaline water as my work place provides me with that provision. I think this is detailed enough for you to get the picture and help. Once again (I love you) in Swahili for spreading the gospel!

    A:

No difference at all, Beloved! Even the boiled water becomes room temperature water. You're doing fine! Thank you for your words as well! Much appreciated! Peace and Love!

Q: I am a 47 year old African woman who lives in NY, and is new to natural living. I need to cleanse, detox, release excess weight, and release fibroids. I heard of zeolite, and looked for it on your site but I don't see it. Is zeolite good to use for fasting? The purpose of my fast is to end my desire to eat fish, and dairy from my tastebuds, and cleanse.

    A:

You'll have to research this product for yourself. Personally, I have heard about it but, choose to stick with botanicals. Read about our Full Body Detox is a wonderful way to begin living a healthier lifestyle.

Q: I hope all is well! I am writing this note to request a consultation with Djehuti . I can only imagine how busy you are, so I will be brief. But, feel free to let me know if you'd like more detailed information. I am contacting you regarding seeking treatment for severe clinical Depression. In addition I suffer from a severe lack of energy. I'd also like to treat several nutritional deficiencies. I am 35 years old. I have been suffering from Clinical Depression since I was about 16 years old. I began to address my Depression only about 3-4 years ago. Since that time I have struggled off and on with counseling with a Social Worker, psychotherapy with a Psychiatrist, group therapy with a Psychologist, several medications, outpatient hospitalization, CBT therapy, and natural and alternative treatments such as herbs, minerals, vitamins, yoga, exercise, meditation, fasting, and cleansing. But nothing has had any long term benefits. My Depression has become increasingly more severe. Over the past 1.5 years, my Depression has been at its worse. About a year ago, I lost my job due to the Depression. I then went into a major depressive episode that has lasted well over a year. I'd like to ask you for some direction in treating my Depression, lack of energy, etc. If you have some time, I'd love to do a consultation with you. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I am interested in doing an intense 3-month fast and detox cleanse. I would really like to do a cleanse and detoxification to completely heal my body and get rid of the toxins, impurities, mucus, etc. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.

    A:

Have you schedule a consultation yet? Drugs won't help you. The root cause is emotional and spiritual. Dherbs.com can help you! I'll have an article up on depression by December 1, 2008. Stay tuned to Dherbs.com!

Q: I am a massage therapist. During a year long detox with the help of a Naturopath I lost about 40 pounds. However, I could only lose weight while fasting. Though I recognized that I was extremely toxic (very thick, dark menses every 15 days to flu-like symptoms) it seemed that fecal matter was getting "stuck" in the bend of the trans. Colon and disc. Colon. Maintaining the weight losses and good health was difficult in spite of being on a wholesome diet. Digestive enzymes seemed to adversely affect digestion since elimination was slow (once a day). Though enzymes worked well in the stomach, I would only gain weight with the use of enzymes: drinking a gallon of water a day only touched my extreme thirst. I would become lethargic and experience painful menses. Cramps, along with swelling in the ankles. Recently a massage therapist who worked with colon massage laid hands on me and told me that my trans. colon was sitting below my belly button. His massaging in the bend of the trans. colon and the disc. Colon was very uncomfortable. We agreed that massage could help with my situation since I felt great after the massage. I take flaxseed oil, prune juice, probiotics, and cranberry juice everyday and I have been seeing a colon hydro therapist for the past five weeks (once a week) with very good results. Is there a special diet that can help pull the trans colon back into position? I really want to be able to eat wholesome foods and look and feel wholesome at the same time. Thank you for your support.

    A:

I WOULD RECOMMEND COLON REPAIR. CONSIDER THE DHERBS 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE AND IT'S CORRELATING DIET (WHICH COMES WITH THE CLEANSE) AND DRINK MUCH VEGETABLE AND FRUIT JUICE, BUT ESPECIALLY VEGETABLE JUICE. FRUITS SMOOTHIES WILL ALSO HELP REPAIR THE COLON. DRINK 2-4 OUNCES OF ALOE VERA JUICE IN A GLASS OF WATER. PERFORM ANTI-GRAVITY EXERCISES 15-MINUTES PER DAY (HAVE LEGS RAISED HIGHER THAN THE FACE - I.E. LEGS UP AGAINST THE WALL WITH HEAD AND BACK ON THE GROUND). PERFORM ENEMAS AND COLONICS AS WELL. ALL ORGANS ARE REPAIRABLE AND THEREFORE YOU CAN HEAL YOURSELF OF THIS CRISIS. PEACE, OPTIMAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING BE UNTO YOU.

Q: I am having a hard time getting pregnant. I am 38, did FSH blood- GREAT, HSG- tubes open, uterus clear, Semen Analysis- great.... but no baby. I have a 4 1/2 year old child and I had no problems. What can you suggest? Not good with fasting really- but can you give me some ideas on what to take?

    A:

It may be your mate, Beloved. Both of you should work on yourselves. Not necessarily "fasting", but cleansing (TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE, TOTAL MALE CLEANSE) and then you should perform the FERTILITY CLEANSE.

Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    A:

The Full Body Detox kit comes with a prescribed dietary plan and notifies a person what they can and cannot eat during the detox.

Q: Question, I usually drink distilled water but for the last month or so I?ve been drinking more sparkling water with lemon ["Blu' Italy"] ...it sparkling water good for u or no?

    A:

It's your choice! If it has carbonation in it, I wouldn't drink too much of it. Spring water is best on the market (unless you can find a brand of water that is alkaline and antioxidant). Drinking too much distilled water can leech vital nutrients from the body. Switch up between distilled and spring.

Q: I have been off the full body cleanse for about a month, what I have noticed, when I haven't drank the amount of water needed, my anus begins to hurt as if I have heroics, I cannot wipe without having pain. I drink water, it seems all is fine. I ate fried chicken for the first time, in 3 months, and agin notice pain. So, I need the water, but what I explained, does it sounds right. I have been eating more veggies and fruit, in the last couple days, as well.

    A:

Keep drinking plenty of water and start taking Dherbs' Intestinal Cleanser, and Bowel Motion. They will help to get rid of your hemorrhoidal condition.

Q: I am a 55 year old female. I have an overactive bladder. I am trying to control it myself, without medication. I have not tried herbs. I eat fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins (not beef or pork). I added back more meat proteins 1 1/2 years ago because I was becoming so tired and lacking energy. (I read The Schwartzbein Diet, which helped convince me to add more protein.) I don't eat much sugar, salt (only 500 mg./day) or hardly any processed foods. I drink water and licorice tea, because it makes me feel good. I believe in the power of positive thinking. Can you help me with this?

    A:

The steps you are taking in your diet are a great start. Try going raw, and eliminating grains and meat altogether. You can get enough protein and healthy fats with avocado, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, coconut. You can also add Vegan Protein Powder to smoothies.

I also recommend you give our Full Body Cleanse a try to further detoxify your entire body. After detoxing, the ideal formula for you is our Kidneys Bladder-Adrenal formula.

Q: I've been a vegan for 2 years now. I've done the FBD 3 times in these two years, but my urine is still yellow. The only time it is clear is immediately after I drink water (reverse osmosis water). If I miss a day of drinking water, my urine goes back to being dark yellow. Does this mean that my body is still very toxic? Also, is it normal to release urine 5 to 15 minutes after drinking liquids? I would think that water would need to stay in the body for awhile for proper hydration and cleansing.

    A:

From what you wrote I would suggest you start drinking alkaline water (purchase an alkaline water machine, you can find various brands in our e-book "Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual"). If you are urinating within 10-15 minutes of drinking water you are not absorbing the water, and thus you require micro-clustered water which an alkaline (and ionizing) water machine does. I also highly recommend consumption of our Kidneys-Bladder formula (3 capsules per day).

Q: I'm on the Weight Release kit. I'm drinking the water and making sure that I drink a glass full each time I take one of the product. But at present I'm very bloated and not having a bowel movement. Could you please tell me what I need to do? This is not a good feeling.

    A:

Drink some herbal laxative tea (i.e. senna, cascara sagrada, Smooth Move, etc.) and a cup of prune juice 1-3 times daily. You may also try performing an enema. What you're feeling is natural. The bloating will soon give way to numerous bulky bowel movements.

Q: Hey herbalist, so I have been doing a lot of research on caffeine, and the benefits and harms of it. I am looking for some added information about the differences between the caffeine found naturally in coffee or tea, and the kind found in pure caffeine pills. I have heard that the pills are much more harmful, but have not been able to find proof of why. With the exception of "its made in a lab, therefore it must be worse". If you could shed some light on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it! Just one more question. I have read that caffeine blocks the re-uptake of glutamate. This can cause glutamate toxicity (resulting in dead brain cells), but I am skeptical as to how often this occurs. Will that happen if one takes just 200-mg of caffeine? Is it for the chronic caffeine users who drink 6 cups of coffee a day for 10 years? Thanks so much for your time and effort! looking forward to some knowledge!

    A:

Nature does not make caffeine or any substance in mono-structured form, including caffeine. Caffeine consumed by itself is harmful (a la caffeine pills -- nature does not produce caffeine pills). Caffeine pills are INORGANIC and thus not absorbed by the body (the cells). Bio-caffeiene from plant sources is ORGANIC and thus absorbable. Organic substances can be absorbed through the cells. Inorganic substances cannot. Inorganic caffeine blocks reuptake of glutamate, and that's another reason why synthetic caffeine is harmful. Organic caffeine does not block reuptake of glutamate.

Q: Can I drink black coffee on the FULL BODY DETOX?

    A:

Unfortunately you cannot drink any caffeine's including coffee. The detox regimen is designed to help promote natural energy. You can still achieve a natural energy by the foods we eat such as ginger, berries, avocado and plenty more. You are allowed to consume herbal teas, but nothing else should be processed, cooked or heated.

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

It's not the same water but it will do!
