Why Seaweed Deserves to Be the Next Superfood

seaweed-under-water

Most of us have enjoyed some flavorful, sticky sushi over the years, and likely had our first taste of seaweed in doing so. Filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, this incredibly powerful food is under-utilized in western diets. You don’t have to spend a fortune in a sushi restaurant every time you want to eat this extremely nutritious food. And you don’t necessarily have to eat it to reap some of its health benefits! Let’s take a look at why you should start including seaweed in your diet.

How Do You Get Seaweed In Your Diet?

The most common form of seaweed that most people recognize is nori, which is what sushi is wrapped in. Nori is lightweight, surprisingly filling, and available at many grocery stores in the Asian foods section. If you are cleansing and want to eat nori, don’t get the roasted nori sheets. Other seaweed options include kombu, spirulina, kelp, kelp noodles, wakame, and arame. You can enhance your smoothies with spirulina, cook legumes in kombu, mix kelp or wakame in soups or salads, or blend some seaweed in a salad dressing instead of salt.

1. Jam-packed with Vitamins and Minerals:

Famous for its high levels of iodine, which is important for healthy thyroid function, seaweed is also a great source of calcium, magnesium, protein, vanadium, and vitamins A, C, and K. In case you are wondering about vanadium, it helps the body metabolize carbohydrates, which helps to increase your energy levels.

2. Seaweed May Help Regulate Estrogen And Estradiol Levels:

Recent studies suggest that seaweed (particularly brown seaweed) may be excellent for women because it may reduce the risk of breast cancer. It may also increase a woman’s odds of getting pregnant, in addition to reducing symptoms of PMS.

3. Seaweed Helps Prevent Inflammation:

Several studies have indicated that seaweed is an extremely powerful source of antioxidants, which can help prevent oxidative damage and inflammation in the body. As a result, seaweed may reduce the risk of celiac disease, asthma, depression, obesity, and arthritis. This has lead many to theorize that consumption of seaweed is at least partially responsible for longevity in many Asian countries.

4. Seaweed Detoxifies From The Inside Out:

Seaweed works to remove toxins and fats from the body and also helps to protect the liver from toxic damage. The sodium alginate in kelp also helps absorb toxins from the digestive tract. This is fantastic news for people who smoke cigarettes and those who are exposed to industrial waste.

5. Seaweed Is Full Of Skin-Healthy Minerals:

Although people having been enjoying seaweed baths for centuries, it wasn’t until recently that researchers were able to identify more than 50 powerful skin-nourishing compounds. The detoxification properties in mineral-rich seaweed like kelp help to nourish and rejuvenate the skin, fight cellulite, and minimize the visible appearance of wrinkles. In addition to fighting signs of aging, seaweed extracts have been known to minimize pigmentation and blotchiness in the skin, especially in paler skin types.

6. Seaweed Strengthens Hair:

Seaweed can help the hair strengthen and rebuild itself. Taking spirulina, for instance, helps to revitalize dry hair and promote thicker, stronger strands. Seaweed-based shampoos and conditioners can also improve the appearance and shine of hair and because of the inherent detoxifying attributes.

7. Seaweed Is A Natural Pick-Me-Up And Tonic:

Seaweed-based drinks and soups have been consumed in Ireland and the Caribbean for centuries as all around tonics or as natural energizers. Some claim that kelp can reduce phlegm and swelling, and it is also used as a natural hangover cure in some countries. Brown seaweed may assist the acid-alkaline balance and has a prebiotic effect on the gut flora, which helps protect the gut lining. Seaweed is also used in home remedies to heal digestive problems. Research suggests that brown seaweed may be a good weight management tool as well because of its effects on the activity of lipase, which is an enzyme used by the body to break down fats.

Q: I have a question for you. I love reading your articles and I was reading about the importance of iodine in a vegan diet. I am vegan and I'm scared I'm getting iodine and you wrote that seaweed would fulfill that need. Did you mean Sushi seaweed, the roasted nori kind? Or fresh seaweed? I haven't been able to find fresh seaweed anywhere, except for already prepared seaweed salad. Also, how would you suggest I use the roasted nori seaweed? In smoothies? Because by itself it does not taste good.

    A:

No! Not fresh water seaweed. But seaweed sold in a health food store. One in a bottle. Try Dulse, Kelp, Spiriulina, or even Dherbs Iodine Phosphate formula.

Q: I currently have Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune disease, diagnosed at 20 as a goiter) and am currently taking synthroid medication...I would like to discontinue this and go down an alternative healing route because I don't believe in drugs anymore....I'm interested in the thyroid supplements, especially those with iodine with seaweed. On Sunday I attended a Health Freedom Expo and saw a Chakra healer, who put his hands on my thyroid, asked me to inhale/exhale 3 times and said I was healed? Is that true? Also, muscular dystrophy runs in my family...I am scared to get tested and am afraid for my kids, and although I haven't been diagnosed with anything, I would like to know what supplements I should take to keep me healthy. I am also interested in your complete body detox cleanse--the herbalist told me that I could try the total woman cleanse.

    A:

Dherbs Thyroid Formula, Electric Greens, and Iodine Formula will greatly help your thyroid condition!

Start with the Full Body Cleanse, followed by Athletic Package. After finishing all cleanses, you should continue taking individual formulas. Formulas we would recommend for your issue are Brain Booster, MSM Sulfur, Vegan Protein, Athletic Boost, and Electric Greens Combo.

Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article. I must say that I believe it was so on point that I decided not to look any further. I'm 44 years of age and started noticing my hair thinning when about 12 years ago. I was one of those that you wrote about in your article chasing a lifestyle that is no longer an interest to me. I did fall into some bad habits that were not good for my health off and on over the past 15 years or so more off than on. My body type I would describe as athletic. I'm tone, and strong when I exercise regularly. I'm about 150lbs @ 5'11". My diet is mostly vegetables but from time to time I feel I have to eat fish or chicken. Not necessarily prepared in the healthiest way I'm sure. I just got out of one of my "on" spells so to speak. Meaning the drinking of beer and cigarettes. I've been smoking and drinking beer now since September 2006 after not having done anything but live healthy for six years before that. As soon as my wife and I came back to the states and started working and runnign again these old destructive habits appeared again in my life. I only blame myself though. Right now my hair and skin suffer from the chemical poisoning from the habits that I just mentioned. I am prepared to take your advice about righteous living to heart and start fresh again. Is there a mild remedy that can work with me to stimulate the re-growth of my hair in the spots where it is balding in that classic balding pattern? I am generally very healthy when I doing right and even now rarely get sick. But my sickness manifest in stress and bad habits to num the pain of having to live this way when don't really want to. I quit the job that I've been working for the past 4 years for that reason and have been blessed to have some time not to grind everyday chasing after money. Now is a crucial time of healing for me, and I must take full advantage of the time. Moderation is in order for whatever you can suggest for me in the way of herbal remedies. I am sure that you can prescribe a simple overall regiment for my overall health based on what I have shared with you with an emphasis on the hair and skin. Again, thank you for writing the article. Call or write. The sooner the better.......Thank You!!

I would say first detox with the FULL BODY DETOX and get your diet right CONSISTENTLY! Constantly clean your temple! This is key! Next, perform the TOTAL MALE CLEANSE. After this, do a daily regimen of HAIR SKIN NAILS FORMULA, ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, KHEMETIAN GOLD, and MSM SULFUR. Forgive yourself of past self-inflicted harm! Stop worrying about your hair loss. Start visualizing your hair growing back. If you can see it, you will achieve it! The mind is all and problems and remedies begin in the mind! BTW: we offer phone consultations if you're interested.

Q: You have products that have Kelp as the ingredient. I have Graves Disease which is a hyperthyroid disease. Could you recommend another product that does not have Kelp to help clean my system.

    A:

Our Blood and Lymphatic Formula does not contain kelp. Most of our formulas do not contain kelp. However, natural and organic kelp will not harm you due to your thyroid condition. It is only unnatural, synthetic man-made kelp that would be a problem to you. Natural kelp may actually help you and your condition.

Q: Over the last 2 yrs I've been interested in taking a more holistic approach to my health. I heard a radio ad for the dherbs website in NC where I live. At any rate, after perusing the site, I know there are several products I want to use but I don't want to take a large quantity of supplements at once. I am interested in doing a detox and colon cleanse. I want to improve the health of my eyes. I am very mucus laden and don't want to have an invasive procedure done that ENT/Sinus doctors are suggesting so I would like to do something more natural to clear that head congestion. I also have oily skin and have struggled with acne most of my life and my hair is not manageable so I would like to do something about skin/hair. With the multiple areas that I'm trying to improve, what's the best regime for me without having to take a lot of products together at once?

    A:

Start your healing journey by: 1. Change your diet (Go raw foods/vegan: no meats, no dairy products, etc.) 2. Perform the FULL BODY DETOX 3. After the FBD, take daily EYES FORMULA, MUCUS BUSTER FORMULA and ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD.

Q: I would like to know, if you have any skin care programs, for women age 50 and over. I am going to try the detox progarm as soon as possible. I truly believe that I am going to be very happy with the results. I am 51 years old, and I want to look and feel my best. I have a lot of belly fat, and that makes me feel uncomfortable, because some people will ask me, if I am pregnant. This seems very strange to me, because my stomach seems to be the main place, where all the fat is building up. I desire to have beauty inside and out. I want to be completely whole. If you have tips for skin care and body care, please let me know. Some people say that I look like I am in my forties, however, if I did not have all of this extra body fat, I could really believe what they are saying.

    A:

The blood needs to be cleansed in order to enhance your skin and eliminate excess fat.

We would recommend you perform the Full Body Cleanse which can help improve skin complexion, release weight, and detoxify, purify, rejuvenate, and strengthen the body and all of its eliminative channels.

We also have a Facial Skin Kit that works to naturally restore the health of skin by helping to remove blemishes, hydrate skin, and even out complexion for resilient skin.

Q: I hope all is well! I am writing this note to request a consultation with Djehuti . I can only imagine how busy you are, so I will be brief. But, feel free to let me know if you'd like more detailed information. I am contacting you regarding seeking treatment for severe clinical Depression. In addition I suffer from a severe lack of energy. I'd also like to treat several nutritional deficiencies. I am 35 years old. I have been suffering from Clinical Depression since I was about 16 years old. I began to address my Depression only about 3-4 years ago. Since that time I have struggled off and on with counseling with a Social Worker, psychotherapy with a Psychiatrist, group therapy with a Psychologist, several medications, outpatient hospitalization, CBT therapy, and natural and alternative treatments such as herbs, minerals, vitamins, yoga, exercise, meditation, fasting, and cleansing. But nothing has had any long term benefits. My Depression has become increasingly more severe. Over the past 1.5 years, my Depression has been at its worse. About a year ago, I lost my job due to the Depression. I then went into a major depressive episode that has lasted well over a year. I'd like to ask you for some direction in treating my Depression, lack of energy, etc. If you have some time, I'd love to do a consultation with you. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I am interested in doing an intense 3-month fast and detox cleanse. I would really like to do a cleanse and detoxification to completely heal my body and get rid of the toxins, impurities, mucus, etc. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.

    A:

Have you schedule a consultation yet? Drugs won't help you. The root cause is emotional and spiritual. Dherbs.com can help you! I'll have an article up on depression by December 1, 2008. Stay tuned to Dherbs.com!
