What Alcohol Does to Your Body after the Age of 40

Studies show that drinking can suppress the hormone leptin, which controls appetite which is why people can over eat when drinking. As a sugar source, alcohol raises insulin and turns on fat storage by increasing fatty deposits in the liver and, in middle age, excess can lead to fat storage around the stomach –  a root cause of the classic ‘beer belly’.

Although these effects are more pronounced after 40, similar things are happening to all of our bodies, no matter the age. Alcohol is a tiny molecule, which can get everywhere and, sure, it may make the holidays a little bit more shiny, its effects last far longer than the hangover.
