Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie

Is there any thing more refreshing than cold watermelon chunks on a hot summer day? Well, some might argue that the combination of watermelon and strawberries in a blender is, and they’d be right! This smoothie combines those two signature summer fruits with freshly squeezed orange juice. If the vibrant, zesty flavor doesn’t grab the attention of your taste buds, we don’t know what will! Well, we hope that the incredible vitamin and antioxidant content convinces you to give this smoothie a try.

Although strawberries can have a slightly tart flavor profile, they are generally very sweet. Watermelon is also quite sweet, but not in an overpowering way. Because of the sweetness level of both the watermelon and strawberries, this smoothie contains fresh orange juice. The acidity of the juice establishes a balanced flavor profile. Just as a quick note, you can always lessen the sweetness level of the smoothie by including some of the watermelon rind. If you choose to drink this smoothie, it’s better to drink it in the morning for breakfast or in the afternoon for lunch. You want to give your body time to process the sugar of the watermelon and orange juice. Don’t worry, though, these fruits won’t set your body into a full-blown sugar high. If you feel like getting a little creative, especially on these warmer nights, cut the strawberries and watermelon and freeze them overnight. Add them to a food processor with the orange juice the next day to make a sorbet. Now that’s a summertime dessert!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c watermelon, cubed
  • 1 c strawberries, frozen overnight
  • 1/2 orange, juiced

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into two different cups and enjoy.
