]]>

2026 marks a century of national commemorations of Black History. Exactly 100 years ago, the United States celebrated the first Black History Month as a weeklong event. Carter G. Woodson established that week as Negro History Week, and he realized the importance of establishing a theme to attract and focus the public’s attention. The intention was never to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience; rather, the goal has been to bring public awareness to important developments that merit emphasis.

Since 1976, the U.S. has celebrated February as Black History Month. Not only does Black history embrace the 400-year-long record of Black life in America, but it also emphasizes stories and activism against slavery and present-day racism. Read on to learn about eight facts about Black History Month

Black History Month Began As Negro History Week

As previously stated, Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926. The celebration highlighted Black Americans’ lives, history, and contributions to the U.S. It wasn’t until 1976 when Negro History Week expanded to a month-long celebration that people continue to observe today.

The Theme For Black History Month Changes Yearly

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which was founded by Carter G. Woodson, selects a different theme for Black History Month each year. While the very first theme was Civilization: A World Achievement, the theme for 2026 is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” honoring the first Negro History Week that took place in 1926. The centennial focus serves to highlight the importance of telling an accurate and inclusive history, especially during efforts to limit Black history in schools and public culture. Ideally, this theme challenges society to understand how these commemorations and celebrations affect Black people.

Different Countries Celebrate Black History Month

Known as the “Mother of Black History Month” in Canada, Dr. Jean Augustine established celebrations in 1995. Just like in the U.S., celebrations occur in February. The Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom observe Black History Month in October. The United Kingdom’s initial focus was on Black American history, but the focus now is on Black British history.

Black History Month Recognizes All African American Experiences

According to the Census Bureau, Black Americans accounted for 13.6% of the U.S. population as of 2022. That means that there are over 45 million different lived experiences across the nation. Each experience is honored during Black History Month, and celebrations that honor these experiences are about supporting communities, family members, and the stories that unite them.

Black Students Protested For Black History Month

In 1968, members of the Black United Students (BUS) at Kent State University protested disorderly conduct charges against students that participated in sit-ins. The student activism was successful in that it helped establish three Black studies departments and institutes on campus. The following year, BUS members demanded Kent State extend Negro History Week into a month of Black history celebrations. This was later observed nationwide.

National Organizations Sponsor Black History Month

Different organizations honor Black History Month every February by hosting commemorative events. Of the many Black History Month sponsors, some of them include The Library of Congress, The National Park Service, The Smithsonian Institution, and The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These organization-run events involve art gallery productions, different speakers, and community learn sessions.

HBCUs Promote Black History Year-Round

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established to provide higher education opportunities to Black Americans. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was the first HBCU established in 1837. HBCUs that were established prior to 1964 honor their mission to educate Black Americans. These universities recognize Black American experiences in addition to teaching Black history.

February Honors Frederick Douglass And Abraham Lincoln

Carter G. Woodson selected February to celebrate Black History Month for good reason. He wanted to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birth dates. Lincoln declared freedom for enslavedAmericans held in the Confederacy via the Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass escaped American slavery in 1838 and became a famous abolitionist, speaker, and writer. One of his most famous books was A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the past and learn from earlier lessons to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Explore community events and celebrations this February to learn more about Black History.

Get the ingredients and ready your food processor because homemade energy bites are as easy as one, two, three. An easy-to-make snack that is rich in protein, fiber, healthy fats, and free of preservatives and added sugars? How many times can we say yes? When you need a boost of energy and want to enjoy something that is wholesome, nutrient-dense, and delicious, turn to these chocolate hemp and pumpkin seed energy bites. They take less than 10 minutes to process and then another few minutes to form into balls. Freeze them until firm and then enjoy!

You will need raw pumpkin seeds, hemp hearts, chia seeds, raw cacao powder, Medjool dates, raw sunflower seed butter, alcohol-free vanilla extract, and grade A maple syrup. Once you gather your ingredients, ready the food processor fitted with the ‘S’ blade. You will first have to process the pumpkin seeds with the hemp hearts. Once that becomes a crumbly mixture, add the chia seeds, dates, vanilla, sea salt, sunflower seed butter, and maple syrup to the processor. Pulse until that mixture is a dough-like consistency. It will almost turn into a ball in the food processor. Just make sure to stop blending, scrape down the sides, and continue blending in order to fully incorporate all of the ingredients.

Due to the fact that these energy bites have sunflower seeds, hemp hearts, chia seeds, and sunflower seed butter, they are not lacking in healthy fats, protein, or fiber. That makes them great for enjoying when you want something to hold you over between meals. They are also great to enjoy pre- or post-workout, as the nutrients in them aid both muscle performance and recovery.

Who needs Larabars when you can easily make your own with three simple ingredients? These are perfect if you have been looking to enjoy healthy snack options during your cleanse. They provide outstanding flavor and lots of fiber, healthy fats, and protein, all of which help keep you full between meals. The dates and cashews establish a great balance of nuttiness and sweetness, and the pinch of sea salt gives the bars a little extra pizzazz. It’s almost like a pinch of sea salt on a chocolate chip cookie or delectable caramel. You truly can’t go wrong with a pinch of sea salt in sweet treats.

For this recipe you will need Medjool dates, raw cashews, and sea salt. Dates are naturally sweet and sticky, providing the base for these bars. Make sure your dates are soft and fresh. Need assistance blending? Soak the dates in warm water for about 15 minutes prior to blending them in the food processor. Raw cashews also blend a little easier if you soak them for an hour or so. Just make sure that you discard the soaking water for both the dates and cashews if you decide to soak them. Not a fan of cashews? You can swap them for any raw nut in the same amount. Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and more work great!

After you blend the ingredients and achieve a sticky, dough-like consistency, you will transfer the mixture to an 8″x8″ baking pan lined with parchment paper. Press the mixture into the pan until you have an even layer that is about 1/2-inch or so thick. Freeze for 30 minutes and then remove from the freezer. That will ensure that the bars are somewhat solidified to the point where you can cut them into 10 bars. Separate them and consider wrapping them individually in plastic wrap. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

We aren’t late to the party; rather, we were just waiting until the Fall Equinox before posting a pumpkin spice recipe. We can officially say that it is pumpkin spice season, which means warm fall flavors with colder weather on the horizon. While pumpkin spice lattes are not for everyone, the pumpkin spice flavor itself is highly versatile. It lends itself to a variety of sweet treats, smoothies, beverages, and more. In fact, it makes for a great addition to energy balls made with nuts and dates.

Do dates sweeten the energy bites? Yes, they do, but they also pack a lot of protein and fiber, two things that help you sustain energy and keep you full between meals. They also help bind all of the ingredients together. Dates are not the only energy-boosting ingredient in these balls. The raw almonds and chia seeds provide healthy fats, protein, fiber, and other macro and micro nutrients. Together, the almonds, dates, and chia seeds create the base, but the fun comes when you add the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.

Should you want a nut-free version, you can replace the almonds with pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Additionally, you have the option to roll the energy balls in raw cacao powder or desiccated coconut, but that may yield a different flavor. The cacao powder will add a bitter element, which some people prefer because it balances the natural sweetness of the dates. We hope you enjoy this first taste of fall because many more pumpkin spice recipes will follow suit. Be on the lookout for all things pumpkin spice and everything nice.

Golden milk, or turmeric milk, has been a part of Indian culture for centuries. Not only is the drink bright gold, which stems from the turmeric, but it also offers a rich, smooth flavor and several health benefits. In present day, golden milk has made its way onto trendy coffee shop menus. It is usually listed as turmeric latte, which infuses coffee into the classic beverage. That said, there are many places that serve the traditional recipe of turmeric, animal- or plant-based milk, and other spices and sweeteners.

And now that soothing drink has been transformed into energy balls. Isn’t that incredible?! These are especially great to enjoy if you love to snack. One thing we can say is that these are much healthier to snack on than a bag of chips or box of crackers. They are nutritionally balanced, offering both macro and micronutrients. You get the carbohydrates from the fruit and protein and healthy fats from the nuts and nut butter. The micronutrients come from the turmeric, desiccated coconut, and dates. The combination of macros and micros can help you remain full between meals and keep you from experiencing a sugar rush and crash.

If you are not the biggest turmeric fan, this is a great entry point. It can be a little bitter and very strong, which is why you may not be a turmeric latte lover. The dates and dried mangos provide sufficient sweetness to balance turmeric’s naturally bitter flavor. Plus, the cashews and cashew butter add a pleasant nuttiness that not only enhances the flavor of the energy balls, but also gives them a chewy and creamy texture.

These coconut lime energy bites are the perfect bite-size treats packed with nutrition and flavor. Some may argue that these energy bites, which are almost like little protein bars, are actually desserts in disguise. Made with creamy raw cashews, sweet Medjool dates, desiccated coconut, and fresh lime zest, these energy bites have a well-balanced flavor. There isn’t an ingredient that is more powerful than another one.

The cashews provide healthy fats and protein, while dates add natural sweetness and fiber. To maintain a mild connection to coconut within the actual bites, you incorporate some of the desiccated coconut into the blending process. Once you finish forming the bites and place them in the freezer to set for a bit, you can roll them in the remaining desiccated coconut. If you are not the biggest fan of coconut, you can omit that final step. The desiccated coconut, however, enhances the tropical taste and provides additional healthy fats. Although the lime juice and zest may seem like odd additions to these bites, they actually energize the palate with a light citrusy kick. Consider the following benefits when you think about making them:

  • Rich in healthy fats: Cashews and coconut contribute monounsaturated fats, which work to support heart health.
  • Natural energy boost: The combination of dates and healthy fats helps provide sustained energy, so you can stay full between meals.
  • Antioxidant properties: Lime zest is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which work to optimize immune function.
  • Low in added sugars: Made with natural ingredients, these bites are a wholesome alternative to processed snacks.

We wish that we could create a delicious donut for all of our raw vegan cleansers to enjoy, but we don’t possess the talent, unfortunately. Instead, we created these cinnamon bliss balls, which help satisfy your sweet tooth while providing you with with healthy fats, fiber, protein, and more. They are not fried like donuts, nor are they baked. All you need is a food processor and the ingredients, plus a little freezer time to allow the balls to solidify.

We are not here to give you a lecture about these bliss balls; rather, we are here to tell you that YOU NEED TO MAKE THEM. Why is that the case? Well, they are just too delicious not to enjoy, especially during your cleanse. When you are cleansing, it is vital to have snacks that fill you up, as you do not want to constantly eat between your major meals. The fiber and healthy fats help you feel full for longer, but be careful to not eat too many of them at once. Due to the almonds, desiccated coconut, and dates, they are calorically dense. If you eat five of them, you’ll be consuming just over 600 calories!

To make these bliss balls, you will need a food processor, not a blender. There is no liquid in this recipe, except the maple syrup, so a blender would not be able to sufficiently blend the ingredients together. A food processor can handle the job! Once the ingredients form a dough-like consistency, you can stop processing and get ready to roll the bliss balls. Make sure to wet your hands with water to prevent the blended mixture from sticking to your hands. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, freeze until solid, and then enjoy.
