If you are familiar with our recipe section, you know that we love energy bites. These simple raw vegan treats are great for cleansers because they provide healthy fats, protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. Enjoy one or two of these as an afternoon snack and you won’t even think about grabbing a coffee or energy drinks. Even though these bites contain dates, the slow release of sugar into your system helps you avoid energy spikes or crashes.

Don’t mind the green color; that’s just the color of pumpkin seeds. These are spirulina- and wheatgrass-free! If you are daring and want a little taste of the ocean or greens, go ahead and add those ingredients. We cannot promise that they will taste great, though. We can promise that snacking on these energy bites will provide you with magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, and potassium, all of which are in pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are also rich in antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. These antioxidant compounds were associated with an ability to help reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, according to one study.

Once you blend the pumpkin seeds and dates, form the mixture into bite-size balls with your hands. Place them on a plate or baking tray lined with parchment paper and place them in the freezer. After about 30 minutes, remove them from the freezer and then roll the energy bites in pulsed pumpkin seeds. That is an optional step and you’ll notice that they look like that in the recipe photo.

It is a gift to be able to make your own nut milk because you know exactly which ingredients go into it. Besides the fact that they do not contain any emulsifiers, thickening agents, or added sugars, homemade nut milks simply taste better than anything store bought. They taste fresher and are usually creamier. Because they are homemade and do not contain preservatives, they have a much shorter shelf life. Homemade nut milk, such as this strawberry cashew milk, has a shelf life of about three days, so be sure to drink it all up.

Carrageenan is probably the most common ingredient that you’ll see in a store bought nut milk. It’s a potentially carcinogenic ingredient that you should avoid if you can. Even “clean” nut milk companies will uses ingredients like carrageenan, which doesn’t instill confidence in buyers. A great nut milk should consist of a few ingredients: nuts, water, and a sweetener, such as raw agave nectar, grade A maple syrup, or dates.

For this homemade strawberry cashew milk, there is no sweetener; rather, the strawberries serve as the sweetening component. Choose your strawberries right and you’ll have a perfectly balanced sweet and slightly tart flavor. Now, you can make this strawberry cashew milk in one of two ways. Either you add all of the ingredients to a blender and then strain through a mesh sieve or nut milk bag, or you juice the strawberries and then mix that juice with the strained cashew milk. Choose your destiny and let us know how you like it!

Are you an almond milk fanatic, or do you prefer oat milk? Maybe you enjoy macadamia nut milk or hemp seed milk instead. There is nothing wrong with these non-dairy milk alternatives; rather, quite the opposite, so long as you buy the unsweetened varieties with minimally processed ingredients. Better yet, if you make your own plant-based milks then you are really killing the game. We will say, though, that if you have never tried cashew milk, you are in for a treat, especially with this recipe.

Cashew milk can be quite expensive in stores, so making it at home may help you save a little money. Plus, as you know by now, making your own nut or seed milk is an incredibly easy process, especially if you have a nut milk bag. In the case of this recipe, the cashew milk offers a warm, sweet, and slightly richer flavor than your typical store bought variety. It also drinks smoother and has a creamier texture, which is great if you want to add this to your post-cleanse cup of coffee.

The great thing about this cashew milk, besides the highly addictive flavor, is its versatility. It goes great in smoothies, baked goods, energy balls/bars, cereal, or coffee. The options are truly endless and you can feel great about enjoying this cashew milk because it doesn’t contain the emulsifiers, thickening agents, added sugars, or preservatives, all of which are usually in store bought varieties. How is a two-ingredient chocolate truffle even possible? How could such a truffle be raw vegan? We have two ingredients that will explain: raw cacao powder and dates. This heavenly combination is the perfect combination of sweet and bitter. Because the raw cacao powder is unsweetened, it retains that classic bitterness from dark chocolate. Each bite is wonderfully balanced, but careful not to eat too much of them. Dates contain a lot calories and sugars and even though the sugars are natural, keep that in mind as you enjoy these desserts.

Dates are incredibly useful on the raw vegan diet. You can use them to sweeten smoothies or dressings, or incorporate them into desserts. We love Medjool dates, but make sure that they don’t contain any added sugars or preservatives. Typically, you have to buy dates in bulk. If you are worried that you won’t use them, you can pit the dates and then freeze them to keep them fresh for longer. When ready to use, you can soak the frozen dates in warm water before blending to ease that process.

Blitz these two ingredients together in a food processor until you achieve a smooth paste. The only thing left to do is form the mixture into small, bite-size truffles, and place them in the freezer to harden. You can enjoy them as is, or you can elevate them to the next level by dusting them with more raw cacao powder. We suggest that you dust the truffles instead of rolling them in raw cacao powder. You will likely end up with too much powder on the truffles. Use a mesh strainer to dust them and make sure to rotate them as you do it for an even coat.

A classic fruit jam is a typical spread for toast, pancakes, or simple sandwich. Most store bought fruit jams, though, contain high fructose corn syrup, dyes, artificial flavors, and added sugars. Not all jams are created equal, with some offering low sugar content and fewer ingredients, many of which are of higher quality. Because store bought jams contain a lot of sugar, though, consuming too much may contribute to weight gain, cavities, or type 2 diabetes.

This raw vegan strawberry jam uses dates in place of refined sugar or sugar syrups. That makes this jam rich in fiber and other essential micronutrients. It is truly a healthy breakfast spread for you and your children! You only need frozen strawberries, dates, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Just make sure that you let the frozen strawberries thaw out for a while before you add them to the food processor. And before you ask, yes, you can use frozen strawberries while cleansing. Just make sure that there are no added sugars or preservatives. The only ingredient on the ingredient list should be the strawberries.

Once you blend the strawberries and lemon juice into a smooth puree, add the dates and then continue blending. It is perfectly acceptable if the jam is somewhat chunky. You may not want big chunks of dates in your jam, though. That will be an overwhelming bite of sweetness! This raw jam goes great on a variety of foods, including raw vegan ice cream. Let us know how you like it in the comments below, so that we can keep bringing you these types of recipes.

Believe it or not, making barbecue sauce is a lot easier than it seems. You just need the right ingredients that are properly portioned. Too much sweetness or too much spice can ruin the sauce. Just like a good soup, the perfect sauce requires balance. Fortunately for you, this completely vegan date-sweetened barbecue sauce is the perfect addition to any backyard cookout.

Sometimes the best tasting foods are made with the simplest ingredients. This barbecue sauce is read in under an hour and is like the much healthier version of a big bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s. It may not come as a surprise to you, but a bottle of that barbecue sauce does not contain the healthiest ingredients. It contains high fructose corn syrup and regular can sugar, offering whopping 16 grams of sugar per two tablespoons. That’s quite a lot!

The good news is that this sauce is much healthier, tastier, and contains a fraction of the sugar content, offering 4.6 grams of sugar per four tablespoons. The best way to enjoy this barbecue sauce is the way you enjoy eating it. We recommend putting a large dollop on vegan burger or tofu sandwhich loaded with pickles and coleslaw. Are you drooling just thinking about that meal? We are, so let’s get straight to the recipe! Let us know how you like it in the comments below.

The post 8 Facts About Black History Month appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Nearly 100 years ago, the United States celebrated the first Black History Month as a weeklong event. Carter G. Woodson established that week as Negro History Week, and he realized the importance of establishing a theme to attract and focus the public’s attention. The intention was never to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience; rather, the goal has been to bring public awareness to important developments that merit emphasis.

Since 1976, the U.S. has celebrated February as Black History Month. Not only does Black history embrace the 400-year-long record of Black life in America, but it also emphasizes stories and activism against slavery and present-day racism. Read on to learn about eight facts about Black History Month

Black History Month Began As Negro History Week

As previously stated, Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926. The celebration highlighted Black Americans’ lives, history, and contributions to the U.S. It wasn’t until 1976 when Negro History Week expanded to a month-long celebration that people continue to observe today.

The Theme For Black History Month Changes Yearly

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which was founded by Carter G. Woodson, selects a different theme for Black History Month each year. The very first theme was Civilization: A World Achievement. The theme for 2023 is Black Resistance, which sheds a light on historic and modern oppressions against Black Americans. Resisting acts of discrimination, racism, and injustice plays an integral role in the well-being of Black Americans.

Different Countries Celebrate Black History Month

Known as the “Mother of Black History Month” in Canada, Dr. Jean Augustine established celebrations in 1995. Just like in the U.S., celebrations occur in February. In the Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, Black History Month is observed in October. The United Kingdom’s initial focus was on Black American history, but the focus now is on Black British history.

Black History Month Recognizes All African American Experiences

According to the Census Bureau, Black Americans accounted for 13.6% of the U.S. population as of 2022. That means that there are over 45 million different lived experiences across the nation. Each experience is honored during Black History Month, and celebrations that honor these experiences are about supporting communities, family members, and the stories that unite them.

Black Students Protested For Black History Month

In 1968, members of the Black United Students (BUS) at Kent State University protested disorderly conduct charges against students that participated in sit-ins. The student activism was successful in that it helped establish three Black studies departments and institutes on campus. The following year, BUS members demanded Kent State extend Negro History Week into a month of Black history celebrations. This was later observed nationwide.

National Organizations Sponsor Black History Month

Different organizations honor Black History Month every February by hosting commemorative events. Of the many Black History Month sponsors, some of them include The Library of Congress, The National Park Service, The Smithsonian Institution, and The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These organization-run events involve art gallery productions, different speakers, and community learn sessions.

HBCUs Promote Black History Year-Round

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established to provide higher education opportunities to Black Americans. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was the first HBCU established in 1837. HBCUs that were established prior to 1964 honor their mission to educate Black Americans. These universities recognize Black American experiences in addition to teaching Black history.

February Honors Frederick Douglass And Abraham Lincoln

Carter G. Woodson selected February to celebrate Black History Month for good reason. He wanted to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birth dates. Lincoln declared freedom for enslavedAmericans held in the Confederacy via the Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass escaped American slavery in 1838 and became a famous abolitionist, speaker, and writer. One of his most famous books was A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the past and learn from earlier lessons to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Explore community events and celebrations this February to learn more about Black History.

Before we get into describing this recipe, let’s address the appearance. It isn’t the most aesthetically appealing recipe that will take your breath away. Have you heard of the food concept “ugly delicious,” though? The idea behind this is that not every dish has to be visually stunning in order to impress your taste buds. Such is the case for this date roll, which comes together in under 30 minutes.

A date roll is essentially a tightly rolled log of nuts, dates, seeds, and other dried fruit, depending on the recipe. Roll it up in plastic wrap, freeze it for about 30 minutes, and then remove to enjoy. It’s like a stick of salami, only this has much less sodium and actually provides the body with essential nutrients. This recipe is 100% raw vegan, so all of the nuts are raw and dates are free of added sugars and preservatives. Because the main ingredient of this recipe is the dates, try to use high quality Medjool dates.

If your dates are mushy, they won’t roll properly. Dates that are too dry or dense may require soaking in water for five minutes. Unlike energy bite recipes, you don’t need to blend all of the ingredients together in a food processor. Finely chop the dates as best you can with your knife. If it’s easier to blitz them in the food processor, you can go that route. Chop up the nuts and mix them together with the dates, seeds, raisins, cardamom, and coconut oil. Roll it all up, freeze, and then you can slice into pieces for healthy snacking!

Ideally, everyone lives a responsible, sustainable lifestyle that helps reduce unnecessary waste. We all know that this isn’t the case, especially during the holiday season. Excess tape, tissue paper, wrapping paper, too much food, boxes, and more means one thing: excess waste. And while we encourage this time of celebration to mean something special, we also want it to benefit your wallet and the planet.

The holidays can wreak havoc on your wallet, but it’s often your own doing. You get caught up in the festivities, but this often results in excess of everything. Since a common desire is to declutter and eliminate excess in the new year, there’s no reason to accumulate during the holidays. Celebrate the holiday season and ring in the new year with a more modest environmental footprint by checking out these budget- and planet-friendly tips

Invest In Durable Decorations

Can you go to a dollar store and buy a bunch of decorations under $20? Yes, that is a strategy for many people, but many of those decorations get tossed after the holidays. Although it may seem counterintuitive, you should spend a little more money on holiday decor. When you spend more on higher quality decorations, they’ll last longer and save you money over time. It also delays their inevitable journey to the landfill.

Buy Climate Neutral Gifts

If you can’t or don’t want to buy secondhand gifts, consider gifts that are climate neutral certified. Think of this certification like the certified organic sticker you see on certain foods, only a climate neutral certification ensures that brands offset, plan, and have plans in place to reduce their carbon footprint. There are many brands that are climate neutral; you just have to search for them online.

Consolidate Online Purchases

Online shopping has made holiday gift shopping more convenient than ever. You never have to enter a store and subject your poor ears to those earworm holiday songs. If you are going to purchase gifts online, try to do it in one fell swoop. Amazon, for example, will give you the option to group items together and have them arrive at a later date. That way, you reduce the amount of packages and trucks needed to deliver packages to you. Minimize the excess by shopping online in as few purchases as possible.

Give The Gift Of Experiences

As you get older, you realize that you don’t need or want a lot of stuff. If you do see something you want, you typically buy it for yourself. A lot of other people don’t want to accumulate things either. Instead of buying a mug or hoodie that you know a person doesn’t need, give the gift of experiences. If you want to be budget-friendly, make a coupon book for coffee dates with mom, dinners with grandpa, bowling with the nephew, or babysitting for your niece. Gifts of service, such as mowing the lawn, making a meal from scratch, or running errands, are also great ideas.

Get Creative With Wrapping Gifts

According to an estimate from Earth911, about 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper is produced in the U.S. every year. The shimmer, shine, and fun patterns are short-lived, as people tear the paper to shreds to get to the gift. Most wrapping paper is not recyclable, with about 2.3 million pounds of wrapping paper ending up in landfill every year. Gift bags are great to use because you can use them over and over again. For a recyclable option, consider wrapping gifts in old maps or vintage book pages. Save up some brown paper bags that you get at the grocery store and wrap your gifts in them.

Make A Plant-Based Feast

Turkey and ham are the usual suspects at most holiday feasts, but what’s wrong with breaking tradition? Swap out your meaty dishes for plant-based alternatives. According to research from 2021, vegetarian and vegan diets that focused on legumes and whole grains were the least expensive diets around. A 2019 study found that transitioning from an omnivorous diet to a vegan diet lowered personal greenhouse gas emissions by 50%. Roast some Brussels sprouts or bake a platter of root vegetables. If you live in a warmer climate, get a head of cauliflower and cut it into thick steaks for grilling. You can even roast the entire head of cauliflower and smother it in a lemony tahini sauce!

Fudgy, no-bake, raw vegan brownies are unmatched in flavor, ingredients, and deliciousness. Imagine eating a dessert without added sugars, dairy, or gluten. It just doesn’t happen that often! Although not entirely guilt-free, these raw vegan brownies take minutes to blend in the food processor. Simply spread them in a pan, place in the freezer to harden, and remove to enjoy chocolatey, brownie goodness with no refined sugar.

It’s hard to put out a pan full of brownies and not turn some heads. Most people have to resist eating the entire tray at first glance. There is a delicate dance in place, a knowing that eating a couple is fine, eating the entire tray is problematic. The great thing about these raw brownies is that they they contain healthy fats, fiber, protein, and other nutrients that promote satiety. Because they are richer in calories, you do not want to eat a ton. For example, this recipe yields an 8″x8″ pan, which you cut into 16 pieces. Each brownie has about 150 calories, due to the pecans, almonds, dates, and sesame seeds. Just keep that in mind when you reach for a square.

In order to make brownies, you need chocolate, but not the type you are thinking of. There is not processed chocolate powder mix in this recipe! This recipe calls for 100% raw cacao powder, which you should not confuse with cocoa powder. Cacao powder has powerful nutritional benefits and no added sugars, which cocoa powder tends to contain. That is a general rule of thumb with raw vegan recipes that call for chocolate, though. Always opt for raw cacao powder!
