Some people have only ever had cooked beets. Typically, they come steamed or roasted, and it is during the cooking process that some of that earthy flavor disappears. You can be a fan of cooked beets, but so too can you be a fan of raw beets. You won’t be cubing beets and eating them raw or taking bites out of whole beetroot like an apple, though. By enjoying beets in their raw form, you reserve all of the nutrients, which can decrease during the cooking process.

Due to their firm texture, raw beets hold up impressively well in salads and slaws, especially when shredded or thinly sliced. This sweet and crunchy beet carrot slaw is highly addictive. Not only is this slaw packed with texture from the carrots and beets, but it is also naturally stunning and easy to prep. Make it ahead of time, and it will taste even better after marinating in the mint dressing. Due to its versatility, you can serve it as a salad, side dish, pile it on a grain bowl, or serve it inside a wrap.

The herbaceous dressing accentuates the earthy essence of beets and natural sweetness of carrots. We don’t want to sound like dressing snobs, but we will this time. This dressing is warming, slightly sweet, and a little tart. It has a touch of spice from the fresh ginger, raw garlic, and cumin, but the beets and carrots help create a pleasant balance.

When the weather gets warmer, we have to bust out the refreshing recipes. Nothing quite like adding a little zest to your life with some spicy and sweet flavor combinations. That’s exactly what this pineapple jicama and cucumber salad is! If you are familiar with Mexican fruit vendors, you’ll understand this recipe perfectly. Typically, the vendor slices up a variety of fruits, such as papaya, melon, pineapple, jicama, cucumber, mango, and more, and places it in a cup or plate. Anyone can prepare a bowl of fruit, but the toppings make the recipe. The fruit is dressed with lime juice, a chili lime seasoning (typically Tajin), and Chamoy, which is a salty sweet condiment that has a touch of spice.

Now, both Chamoy and Tajin are not the healthiest of ingredients, so you somewhat negate the health benefits of the fruits you eat by drowning them in both of these. The good news is that you can make a healthier rendition of a fruit cart staple. You can use chili powder, lime juice, fresh orange juice, and a hint of agave to flavor your already sweet and delicious fruit. But why add the jicama? Well, jicama is a tuber that exhibits a crisp, crunchy texture and mildly nutty flavor. It is a fun way to get fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports healthy digestion. Plus, jicama offers an assortment of antioxidant compounds that may help prevent cell damage and oxidative stress!

What if you are not a fan of spice? You can opt out of the chili powder entirely, or you can choose to reduce the amount and increase as you get more comfortable with the spice level. With the addition of two citrus juices and agave, though, your palate should be just fine!

Depending on where you live, you might be in a weird limbo between spring and summer. The weather can fake you out, getting warmer for a few days, only to have a crisp chill in the air the next. On those warmer days, though, it is great to incorporate some hydrating, refreshing ingredients into your diet. That’s why we put together this lovely citrus salad, which is just as flavorful as it is beautiful.

If we could insert just a little of our own opinion here….we would tell you that we could eat this salad whenever the weather is warm. It just screams warm vibes on the beach or chill afternoons in the park. You can also enjoy this citrus salad in the comfort of your own home! And even though the word “salad” is part of the recipe, it is truly just a combination of different citrus fruits. Even the dressing contains lime! Because this salad contains three citrus varieties, it is very rich in vitamin C, which helps to optimize immune function and encourage collagen production, which contributes to healthier-looking skin.

This salad consists of Cara Cara oranges (although any orange variety is acceptable to use) and grapefruit. Cara Cara oranges are naturally sweeter, complementing the tart and slightly bitter flavor of grapefruit. Make sure to peel the oranges and grapefruit, ensuring you remove any excess pith (the white inner part of the peel). Cut your fruit into segments to give your salad an elevated look. Don’t have time for all that fancy jazz? Cut the oranges and grapefruit as you please and toss the pieces in the dressing.

Get ready to spice up your life and refresh your palate with this new refreshing raw vegan cucumber salad. Skip the leafy greens this time, folks, and save them for a rainy day. This salad is all about the crunchy cucumber, which offers a lovely crisp texture that helps to promote hydration. At its core, this salad is merely a mound of thinly sliced cucumbers, but the dressing is the real star of the show, offering acidic, spicy, and herbaceous notes from the cilantro and mint, which elevate the dish’s aromatic qualities.

The dressing combines tangy apple cider vinegar, a touch of coconut aminos, and a hint of fresh lime juice to create a zesty kick. You cannot forget the red pepper flakes, which bring the spicy kick to the flavor party. Because this dressing includes coconut aminos, you don’t want to use a very flavorful oil. We used avocado oil, as opposed to olive oil, for the neutral flavor. It’s also full of healthy fats! Add all of those things together and you have an incredibly harmonious dressing that effortlessly envelops the crisp cucumber slices with impressive flavor that your taste buds cannot resist.

Last, but certainly not least, garnish the salad with a hefty serving of sesame seeds. If you’re feeling a little daring and crave a little more intensity, add some thinly sliced red onion or chopped green onion to the salad. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy this salad, which is ideal for warmer days. It’s truly a delightful culinary experience that is both nourishing and satisfying.

You do not typically see cucumbers in a coleslaw recipe. Traditionally, you have green and purple cabbage, carrots, and potentially some other ingredients, such as apples, herbs, or nuts. This slaw is a slight departure from the traditional recipe, especially in regards to the dressing. A typical coleslaw dressing is mayonnaise-based, but you cannot have that while cleansing. Instead, we went a slightly Asian route and created a highly addictive, somewhat spicy ginger dressing. You lightly dress the slaw in the dressing, being careful not to douse the slaw in it. Doing so will cause the cucumbers to become a bit soggy.

If you don’t want to serve it as a slaw, you can simply cut the cucumber and carrots into thicker sticks to dip in the ginger dressing, omitting the cabbage because nobody dips shredded cabbage. Planning on making a bigger batch for a potluck or gathering? Leave the dressing on the side so that the cucumbers don’t get soggy.

Unlike traditional Asian dressings, this one calls for apple cider vinegar in place of rice vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has a bit more bite to it than rice vinegar, but that works with the naturally sweet coconut aminos. You’ll also notice that the dressing calls for avocado oil, not olive oil. The reason for this is because olive oil’s flavor can be a bit strong for an Asian-inspired dressing. Avocado oil has a more neutral flavor that doesn’t take away from the other ingredients.

Oh, this salad is oh, so flavorful. It’s got everything you want from a recipe: spice, zest, acid, sweet, tang, and more in every bite. Besides the impressive and refreshing flavors, this salad offers a variety of colors and textures. That makes for a more enjoyable eating experience with the added benefit of getting the various antioxidant compounds from the different-colored ingredients. Don’t let the recipe make you think that this is difficult to make, either. It comes together in a matter of 10-15 minutes and truly showcases the flavor of mango.

Traditionally, Thai mango salad is made with green mango, which is shredded or thinly sliced and mixed with red onion, cilantro, peanuts, fish sauce, and lime juice. The green mango, which is unripe, takes a similar role to green papaya, which is also unripe. Green mangos have a firm, crunchy texture and are quite tart. That’s why they are common in chutneys or pickles. Because green mangos are not as readily available in your average grocery store, we elected to use ripe mangos, which offer a juicy sweetness that complements the kick and punch of the other ingredients. Additionally, we replace the peanuts with raw cashews and, for obvious reasons, we omitted the fish sauce.

We always support culinary creativity at all times. If you feel that you have a cleanse-approved ingredient that would work well with the ones in this salad, feel free to add it in. What we do encourage is that you maintain somewhat uniform cuts for the ingredients. Slice the cucumbers and mangos thinly and on a diagonal so that they can be similar to the thinly sliced onions. Lastly, we only included red pepper flakes, not Thai chilies, because we care about not burning your taste buds off!

Sometimes you have a salad prepared, but there is no dressing in sight. Sure, you can whip up a quick apple cider vinaigrette in a matter of minutes, but sometimes your taste buds require something more elevated. Enter this cilantro lime dressing. The truth is that a salad dressing is 50% (if not more) of a salad. A terrible dressing will ruin a salad, no matter the salad ingredients. Not every dressing goes with every salad, though. Sometimes, though, you find a dressing that seems to go great with every salad recipe, and that is how we feel about this dressing.

The great thing about this cilantro dressing is that you can use it on a raw vegan salad, pasta salad, a bowl of quinoa, a marinade for wild caught fish, or as a dipping sauce for roasted vegetables. In a normal recipe, you’d see Greek yogurt or sour cream on the ingredient list. Because this is a raw vegan recipe, we used avocado to achieve the same creaminess that those ingredients would be used for. Additionally, we added some fresh jalapeño to kick up the spice just a hair. If you are a bit timid around spicy food, you can omit this ingredient. Curious about a little spice? De-seed the jalapeño and then add it to the blender with the rest of the ingredients.

With spring approaching, this is the perfect dressing to have in your pocket of recipes. It goes great with refreshing salads that have sweet, tangy, and slightly bitter ingredients. Because it has avocado, you’ll consume a lot of healthy fats along with your salad, which helps fill you up: a crucial thing to keep in mind if you are cleansing. Finally, make sure that you consume this dressing within three to four days for optimum freshness.

This is not your average fruit salad, people. This jicama salad, known as xec, is a citrus salad from the Yucatan state in Mexico. Xec is actually the Mayan word for salad, or ensalada. It is a quick and easy dish that is a classical side during the Day of the Dead. The ingredients in this salad may change depending on the time of year, as people use the seasonal produce that is available. Typically, though, the salad is made up of jicama, citrus fruit, and either chili powder or freshly diced serrano or habañero peppers. A classic ingredient list is as follows:

  • Jicama
  • Orange
  • Grapefruit
  • Mandarin (or tangerine)
  • Sour orange
  • chili powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper

In Yucatan, jicama is in season from November to January. It’s very common to see this salad sold by local vendors in markets in Mexico, but the ingredients can vary with the seasons. Mangos come into season during February and dragon fruit, pineapples, and other fruits and vegetables arrive during spring. Feel free to get adventurous with seasonal produce or use this recipe that is a great mix of fresh flavors.

The hardest part of making this fruit salad is the prep work, specifically the peeling of the jicama. Make sure to remove any excess skin and then dice the jicama up into bite-size pieces. It’s very common to squeeze half of a lime over the jicama to help awaken some natural flavor. This process also helps to prevent the jicama from browning.

This could be the prettiest salad/slaw you make throughout the winter. It is very crunchy, crisp, refreshing, and slightly tangy. Filled with purple cabbage, carrots, pears, and pomegranates, there is no shortage of nutrients in this slaw. Plus, the vitamin C-rich citrus vinaigrette keeps you coming back bite after bite. If you love a dish that has texture and different levels of flavor, this is the slaw that will satisfy your taste buds. All other slaws will bow to this one!

A slaw is very versatile because you can enjoy it as an entree salad, side dish, or put it on sandwiches. Because of the sweet and slightly tart flavors, this slaw complements numerous entrees and sandwich toppings. As a quick note, the sandwiches are only for people who are not cleansing! This slaw may be cleanse-approved, but a sandwich is not. That said, you could roll up this slaw in a collard leaf to make a raw vegan wrap. Use one of our many nut meat mixtures or nut cheeses in the wraps for for added sustenance.

The slaw is as tasty as it is beautiful. The sweetness of the pear goes great with the tart and juicy pomegranate arils and slightly bitter purple cabbage. The citrus vinaigrette takes it to another level, though. In the words of Guy Fieri, “You could put that on a flip flop!” It’s so good that you could drink it! Save the dressing recipe because you may want to use it on other salads in the future. And as a last piece of advice, you can let the slaw sit in the dressing for an hour or two before serving so that the ingredients can soak up that citrus flavor.

This lemon dressing may be new to our website, but it is already an all-time favorite. It has unique lemon flavor, which makes for a zesty eating experience. Tempered by sweet agave nectar and herbaceous parsley, this dressing goes great with a variety of salad ingredients. Pour it over a combination of romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers, or over shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, mandarin segments, and green onion. We love when a dressing is versatile!

Whisk lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, mustard powder, sea salt, pepper, and fresh parsley in a small bowl and you have your dressing. Prefer a dressing that is a little smoother? Feel free to add all of the ingredients to a blender and blitz until smooth. The good news is that the preparation method doesn’t change the zesty, delicious flavor. There is just so much to love about his lemon dressing, and here are a few reasons why:

  • Very easy to make: This dressing should not take you longer than five minutes to make. Plus, it only requires seven ingredients!
  • Endless possibilities: Is your salad in need of a boost? This dressing will elevate any salad to a whole new level! If you don’t want to use it as a salad dressing, consider using it as a marinade for roasted or grilled vegetables or tempeh.
  • Clean ingredients: Many store bought dressings contain a lot of problematic ingredients, namely saturated and trans fats, added sugars, excess sodium, and preservatives. These additives keep dressings shelf-stable for longer periods of time. Additionally, they tend to contain lower-quality oils and other ingredients to keep production costs down. This lemon dressing, however, contains simple, healthy ingredients that you can actually pronounce!
