Do you have a cabbage obsession? If you don’t, you’re about to love this low-calorie superfood. Not only does it add texture and color, but also a subtle and humble flavor to your salads. For this salad recipe, though, we eliminated the lettuce and went straight to shredded cabbage for the base. It’s more of a slaw than a salad, but we aren’t about to debate the qualifications of a slaw versus a salad. The fact of the matter is that this recipe embraces fall ingredients and is quite delicious.

For this cabbage apple salad, you can use red or green cabbage, or a mix of both if you want more contrasting colors. The same can be said for the apples. You can use Granny Smith (green) apples, Fuji apples, Honeycrisp apples, or Red Delicious apples. Can’t decide which one to use? Use a combination of two or more apple varieties to establish sweet and tart flavors in this salad. The combination of cabbage, apples, walnuts, and sweeter dressing creates a lovely mix of sweet and savory flavors. Will you serve yourself on a separate plate or eat straight out of the salad bowl?

When it comes time to prepare the salad, you can choose to cut your ingredients uniformly or slightly different. You can thinly slice the apples, or you can cut them into matchsticks to be more similar to the shredded cabbage. Crumble the raw walnuts and then drizzle the dressing over everything. If you want to make this recipe more fall-themed, consider adding some dehydrated cranberries or pomegranate seeds. Dried cranberries are pictured, just FYI. Just make sure that the dehydrated cranberries are free of added sugars and preservatives.

You have to keep your salads interesting if you want to keep your taste buds interested. A bland salad with the same ingredients and dressing is neither appetizing nor satisfying. In fact, you’ll probably seek out some more food shortly after eating it. That is why we recommend experimenting with different ingredients. Consider taking out leafy greens (even though we love them) and focus on a variety of other ingredients.

This salad takes inspiration from the classic Middle Eastern salad, which tends to have several variations from country to country. It is very simple, but the flavors are bright, powerful, and highly addictive. Plus, it is naturally rich in water-rich produce items, so eating it contributes to your overall water intake for the day.

Key Ingredients

Cucumber: Cucumber is a naturally detoxifying effect on the body, working to cleanse the liver. In addition to being a natural diuretic, cucumber also contains several integral nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K, magnesium, and potassium, among others.

Tomatoes: They are plump, juicy, and naturally rich in lycopene, beta-carotene, flavonoids, folate, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Studies indicate that tomatoes may help protect the skin, eyes, ones, and heart, in addition to helping reduce inflammation.

Basil: The classic pesto leaf has many purposes, and several health benefits to boot. Many researchers attribute basil’s health benefits to the diverse antioxidant profile. Basil works to reduce inflammation, enhance immune function, protect the liver, and regulate blood sugar.

Red onion: Not everyone enjoys onion in their salad, but they do work very well with the other ingredients in this specific salad. They have a diverse and rich nutritional profile, offering lots of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, B vitamins, and potassium, a mineral that aids cellular function, fluid balance, muscle contraction, and more. Researchers confirm that onions are an excellent source of antioxidants, containing at least 17 different antioxidant compounds, including anthocyanins.

Making your own salad dressing can be intimidating. That’s especially true if you don’t know what ingredients to use. Do you just grab any oil off the grocery store shelf and use a vinegar at random? Do you even need oil and vinegar? The reality is that there is no blueprint for a salad dressing because they can be whatever you want them to be. For example, you can go the basic route and mix oil, vinegar, lemon juice, sea salt, and pepper and call it a day. Alternatively, you can blend together a bunch of herbs with water, lime, red pepper flakes, and other seasonings. Or, you can make this almond butter turmeric salad dressing that is reminiscent of a class Thai peanut sauce.

The great thing about making your own salad dressing is that you get to avoid high fructose corn syrup, disodium cuanylate, and other crazy ingredients in bottled dressings. Additionally, you get to avoid unhealthy saturated fats and sodium when you make your own dressing. In the case of this dressing, you have a lot of healthy fats and protein from the raw almond butter. That is the base, which provides a lovely nuttiness that complements the turmeric, ginger, garlic, and coconut aminos. If you want to add a little zest, feel free to squeeze half a lime into the dressing. We’ll leave that decision up to you, though. Lastly, you can use this dressing on salads, in raw vegan wraps, or as a dipping sauce for freshly cut vegetables.

Time is precious, no matter if you are a busy parent, grandparent, single adult, or young college student with pressing deadlines. When life keeps hurling tasks at you to complete, finding time to prepare and enjoy healthy foods can seem like an impossible feat. That’s because there is this notion that making a healthy dish requires a great deal of your time. Quite the opposite! There are many healthy meals that you can make in 15 minutes or less, just like this peach tomato basil salad.

This salad bursts with flavor and comes together in just 10 minutes. It is everything you want form a salad as well: juicy, acidic, sweet, herbaceous, and so much more. It’s perfect to enjoy as a refreshing, light lunch option, or dinner side. Because of how easy and quick it is to make, there is no excuse for you not to make it. Plus, the ingredients should make you want to gobble up this salad quicker than you can make it. The juicy, acidic tomatoes pair beautifully with the sweet peaches and aromatic basil. Toss everything together in a quick and easy dressing and you are ready to eat.

As a quick note, you want the peaches to be ripe, but not too ripe. If they are mushy, they can have an off-putting flavor and texture. Perfectly ripe peaches still retain some firmness and a hint of tartness, which beautifully complements the slightly sweet and acidic tomatoes. The sweet peaches also add a refreshing sweetness that balances the acidic dressing. And as a final note, the thinly sliced jalapeños are optional, but they bring a lovely heat to the sweetly tart salad.

Before summer comes to an end, do yourself a favor and make this salad. It features one of summer’s most iconic produce items: the mighty watermelon. It is juicy, refreshing, sweet, and crispy. Just make sure that you use the watermelon before it gets too ripe and soft. You want crisp cubes for this salad! Plus, an overripe watermelon can have an unpleasant flavor, which will not go well with the blueberries, mint, and vinaigrette.

This is actually a great salad to make if you have leftover watermelon that you do not want to enjoy on its own. Perhaps you had a party and cut up an entire watermelon, but half of it went uneaten. That’s perfect because this recipe calls for eight cups of watermelon. You can choose to use less if you want to make a smaller salad. Add in the blueberries and freshly chopped mint and you are in business. In fact, you could enjoy that trio without dressing and be perfectly content, but the apple cider vinaigrette adds a savory element that makes this feel more like lunch and less like a breakfast side.

Don’t have blueberries? You can opt to use blackberries, or even strawberries, if you have them on hand. There is just a special relationship between mint and blueberries. It’s a combo that just seems to work over and over again. Let us know if you agree in the comments!

A salad doesn’t have to have a long list of ingredients in order for it to be delicious. This simple cucumber apple salad contains exactly what the name says: cucumbers and apples. Toss the apple and cucumber cubes with a simple apple cider vinegar dressing and you are in business. It’s a great, light summer salad that you can serve at room temperature or chilled. Although we used Granny Smith apples, feel free to use whichever apple variety you enjoy. If you prefer a juicier texture and sweeter flavor from your apple, consider using Fuji or Honeycrisp varieties. If you strive for contrasting colors, use Red Delicious or Pink Lady apples.

You can never go wrong with a good combination, and that is exactly the case for cucumbers and apple. Ideally, try to dice the apple and cucumber into the same size cubes for uniformity and ease of enjoyment. Plus, cutting them the same size will create even texture throughout the salad. Pour the dressing over the cucumber and apple cubes and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, so that the flavors can get to know each other. That also gives the apples and cucumbers time to absorb the dressing, which is highly addictive and refreshing. We actually suggest that you keep all of the ingredients to this salad with you at all times because it

If you are a busy person, time is precious, especially if you regularly run around the house cleaning up after your kids. That is exactly why we love this simple avocado mango salad, because it is easy to meal prep. If you have it prepped and ready to go, all you have to do is dress the salad when you are ready to eat it. Just take it out of the fridge and you have a healthy meal ready to go. That is far better than not having anything and resorting to the closest fast food place to your house, or some packaged snack or meal with excess sodium, preservatives, and sugar.

To make this a successful salad, make sure you gather the right ingredients. You will need the following for your avocado mango salad to shine:

  • Avocados: Naturally, you need avocados for a salad that has avocado in the name. Look for avocados that are ripe, but retain some firmness, as that will provide great texture and flavor.
  • Mangos: Choose ripe mangos because they will burst with a tropical sweetness that balances the other strong and acidic ingredients in this salad.
  • Cherry Tomatoes: Not only do cherry tomatoes bring a vibrant color to the salad, but they also supply a wonderfully juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic flavor.
  • Red Onion: Offer a mildly sweet crunch, red onion is a great ingredient that adds a little zing to your salad. Don’t worry about a potent onion flavor because the other ingredients offer a refreshing balance and sweetness.
  • Cilantro: If you are one of those people who thinks that cilantro tastes like soap…better luck next life. We are here for this aromatic and herbal flavor that cilantro brings to the party!
  • Jalapeño: Although optional, we encourage you to include it in this avocado mango salad. Remove the seeds to tame the spice, or leave them in to kick things up a notch!

Get ready to enjoy a light and refreshing slaw recipe that is made without mayo or heavy dressing. Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break from the traditional coleslaw and make a lighter variation. This recipe is exactly that, and makes for a perfect side dish, taco topper, or salad substitute if you are cleansing. Plus, the lighter slaw is much lower in calories and fat than a traditional slaw with mayo-based dressing. Cabbage itself is low in calories, but the dressing is where the calories and fat come from. Not in this recipe, though!

You can’t have slaw without cabbage, which offers a rich nutritional profile. Cabbage provides vitamins C & K, fiber, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Some of the antioxidant compounds in cabbage may contribute to DNA protection and offer protection against certain types of cancer. Now, while cabbage is a nutritious ingredient, jalapeños also offer surprising health benefits. Commonly used in Mexican cuisine but popular worldwide, jalapeños are vibrant green hot peppers that are naturally rich in vitamins C, B6, A, & K, in addition to folate, manganese, and beneficial antioxidants.

Several lab studies indicate that capsaicin, an alkaloid compound in jalapeños and other peppers, exhibits strong anti-cancer properties. In fact, it has the potential to kill over 40 types of cancer cells without harming normal, healthy cells. Capsaicin works to fight cancer by stopping the growth and division of cancer cells, slowing the formation of new blood cells around tumors, and preventing the spread to other areas in the body. Will eating this cilantro lime slaw reduce your cancer risk? We can’t speak to that, but the ingredients speak for themselves! We hope you enjoy the slaw!

Get ready to enjoy a vibrant marinated salad that features crisp cucumbers, juicy tomatoes, and sharp onions, creating a refreshing medley of flavors and textures in your mouth. Using your best knife skills, slice all of the ingredients to be uniform. If you want, you can slice the onions a little thinner than the other ingredients before combining them in a bowl. By marinating the ingredients in the oil, vinegar, herbs, and seasonings, you let their natural juices mingle, enhancing the overall freshness. The extra virgin olive oil adds a smooth richness, while the apple cider vinegar provides a tangy brightness that elevates the flavors.

To deepen the flavor profile, we added freshly chopped parsley and dill, but you can choose one or the other if you have an aversion to a particular herb. The herbs provide aromatic herbal notes that complement the vegetables beautifully. The addition of minced garlic introduces a pungent, savory layer that enhances the salad’s complexity, making each bite more flavorful and enticing. The combination of herbs and garlic transforms this simple salad into a fragrant, savory side dish suitable for any meal.

Marinating the vegetables allows the flavors to meld beautifully over time, resulting in a salad that is both tangy and herbaceous with a satisfying crunch. The acidity from the vinegar balances the richness of the olive oil, while the herbs and garlic provide a fresh, aromatic finish. This marinated cucumber, tomato, and onion salad is an effortless, wholesome dish ideal for picnics, barbecues, or as a cooling accompaniment to spicy or hearty meals.

Quick, easy, delectable, and perfect for summer, this sweet peach dressing is going to blow your taste buds away. With only five ingredients (olive oil, lemon juice, fresh peach, agave nectar, and sea salt), it is essentially summery goodness in a jar. We give it a rave review, but your palate will ultimately be the deciding judge. Can this dressing make it to the top of your summer dressings list? You’ll just have to make it and find out, but hurry before peaches are out of season!

Making a summer salad? This is the dressing you’ve been looking for. It also differs from other dressings, in that most do not blend fresh seasonal fruit into them. Because it contains fresh peach, the lifespan is not nearly as long as a store bought dressing. In fact, you have to use this dressing within three days of making it, and that’s even when you store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Because the dressing has fresh lemon juice, you want to use a peach that is ripe. Riper peaches offer a sweeter flavor, which balances the acidic nature of the lemon.

Once you prepare the ingredients, add all of them to a blender and blend until smooth. Ideally, peel the peach, as this will make for a more pleasant eating experience. You don’t have to peel the peach if that is too much work. Instead, you can blend the unpeeled peach cubes with the rest of the ingredients and strain the blended mixture through a fine mesh sieve. That will get rid of any red peel flakes in the dressing.
