Fruity, delicious, and refreshing…are not the words you would typically use to describe a kale smoothie. This high protein smoothie is definitely a keeper, especially if you are cleansing. It is full of fiber, antioxidants, protein, and so much more. Drinking this smoothei can fuel your body with the energy and nutrients it needs to stay full between meals. Plus, it comes together is just five minutes!

If your goal is to include more protein in your diet, this smoothie should remain in your recipe rotation. No need for chalky protein powders with this smoothie! This smoothie is creamy as can be and helps your body build muscle, boost metabolism, and may even help you curb unwanted cravings. In addition to the protein, this smoothie also offers beneficial antioxidants, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, potassium, polyphenols, and more. Blueberries are great sources of anthocyanins, which are antioxidant compounds that work to reduce inflammation, help lower blood pressure, and protect brain function. Some research indicates that these antioxidants may even exhibit anti-aging properties.

When it comes to choosing kale, you have a lot of options to choose from. Typically, green curly kale is the most common variety in grocery stores, but you don’t want to choose that variety for this recipe. Baby kale is definitely the way to go for this smoothies, and other smoothies that call for kale. It has a much milder flavor and may even exhibit some mild sweetness. Plus, you don’t have to worry about thick fibrous stems that you have to remove prior to blending.

Allow us to start at the beginning: a beautiful, creamy base of homemade almond milk, which lends a light, nutty smoothness that carries the flavors without overpowering them. A frozen banana thickens the smoothie while adding gentle sweetness and a frosty texture. We build on the nutty flavor of homemade almond milk by adding raw almond butter, which provides healthy fats, protein, and fiber. As the blender blitzes the ingredients, the ground flaxseeds disappear into the mixture, giving the smoothie a velvety smoothness and wholesome, satisfying feel. We chose ground flaxseeds because it’s easier for the body to digest them in ground form.

At the heart of the smoothie are the goji berries, which you soften in water prior to blending them. During the blending process, they release a mildly tart, berry-like flavor that complements the banana’s natural sweetness. Goji berries are especially valuable because they are rich in antioxidants that work to protect cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. They also provide notable amounts of vitamin A and vitamin C, which help support normal vision and immune function. The natural fiber in goji berries contributes to feelings of fullness, making the smoothie both nourishing and energizing without weighing you down.

The warm winter spices bring everything together, with cinnamon adding gentle sweetness and fresh ginger delivering a bright, zesty kick that lingers on the palate. The ginger gives the smoothie a refreshing warmth, while the cinnamon enhances the natural flavors of the fruit and nuts. The final result is a well-balanced, ruby-tinted smoothie that tastes comforting yet vibrant—smooth, slightly tart, lightly spiced, and packed with ingredients that make it as nourishing as it is delicious.

People drink lots of coffee, especially during the holiday season. What’s unfortunate is how much sugar people drink when they order holiday-themed beverages. You’re familiar with the classics: pumpkin spice lattes, sugar cookie lattes, peppermint mocha frappes, and other similar drinks. Coffee has its benefits, but not when you add all of those syrups, dairy products, and excess calories and sugars to it. If you are going to add a holiday-inspired creamer to your coffee, you should use this non-dairy peppermint mocha creamer.

The sad reality is that many store bought creamers, or the ones in coffee shops, contain a lot of ingredients you should avoid. Carrageenan, high fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils are just some of those ingredients. Instead, you can easily make your own creamer with some simple ingredients. Plus, the coconut milk base provides lots of healthy fats that help keep you full between meals. Additionally, this creamer is not only dairy-free, but paleo-friendly as well. You cannot enjoy it while cleansing, but you can if you are not using one of our cleanses.

In order to get the signature peppermint flavor, we included peppermint extract. The creamer also contains maple syrup for sweetness, but you can use liquid stevia if you prefer a sugar-free creamer. Sweeten the peppermint mocha creamer to your liking and then go from there. You can also swap peppermint extract for almond, vanilla, or orange extract if you prefer. Just make sure that you enjoy it!

This ruby-red cranberry smoothie starts with homemade almond milk, which gives it a velvety base and slightly nutty flavor. It also delivers valuable antioxidants like vitamin E, which contributes to glowing skin. The crisp apple adds subtle sweetness and fiber, which encourages optimal digestion and keeps you full between meals. A spoonful of almond butter brings the healthy fats, plant protein, and nuttiness that complements the homemade almond milk. It’s safe to say that this smoothie is not lacking in nutrition!

Because fresh cranberries are very tart, you need a sweet ingredients to balance them. That’s where dates come in and they offer dessert-level sweetness without the inevitable sugar crash, potassium, and they support natural energy. Hemp hearts sprinkle in much needed omega-3 fatty acids, helping keep the brain sharp and heart functioning optimally. This smoothie would not be what it is without cranberries, the tart little overachievers that are antioxidant-rich and help support the urinary tract. Additionally, cranberries bring that signature zing that wakes up every cell in the body.

What you are left with is a refreshing, nutrient-dense smoothie that helps boost immune function, support digestion, and fuel your day with clean energy. Not to mention, this smoothie tastes like a treat without having to feel guilty about enjoying it. Think of this smoothie like the wellness equivalent of wearing a cape….minus the questionable fashion choice. Enjoy sipping your way toward optimal health this winter when you make this smoothie.

Most people deal with a gut-related issue at some point during their lifetime. Gut issues can include bloating, gas, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, or more serious issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leaky gut syndrome, or something more serious. Eating a more nutritious diet can help mitigate a lot of common gut issues that stem from poor eating habits. While this smoothie will not solve your gut issues, it is a great place to start, as it contains ingredients that promote a healthy gut.

Leaky gut syndrome is not technically accepted as a formal medical diagnosis, but it is popular in lay literature. Many gastrointestinal symptoms are ascribed to leaky gut, such as distension, diarrhea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating. Healing foods may help alleviate some of these issues, while promoting better gut function in the process. This smoothie is brimming with more nutritious than an average meal in the Standard American Diet. It contains spinach, kale, homemade almond milk, avocado, banana, ginger, hemp hearts, chia seeds, and more!

The mix of bananas and grade A maple syrup naturally sweetens this smoothie. The leafy greens provide vitamins K, A, and C, in addition to magnesium, iron, and fiber. The chia seeds and hemp hearts are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help promote brain and heart health. Additionally, those two ingredients are naturally rich in fiber, which helps keep you full for longer. Drink this smoothie for breakfast and you won’t need to snack unnecessarily before lunch. It’s such a great way to start your day!

A lot of people come down with the common cold or flu during fall. Between the colder weather and more time indoors with a lot of people, the body is more susceptible to sickness. To give your body a better chance at fighting off bacteria and viruses, give your immune system the nutrients it needs via healthy foods. Supplying the body with vitamin C-rich foods is a great place to start, and this smoothie is loaded with vitamin C.

Cranberries belong to the same family as blueberries, bilberries, and lingonberries, but cranberries are the healthiest family. They contain various plant compounds, some of which are effective against urinary tract infections. Regarding immune function, cranberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, which also aids with skin, muscle, and bone maintenance. In addition to vitamin C, cranberries contain quercetin, which may be a potent protector against cancer. More research is necessary to confirm if this compound can help prevent the growth of leukemia, colon, breast, and pancreatic cancers. Cranberries also contain anthocyanins, which include peonidin and cyanidin, and they may be able to slow tumor growth, but more research is needed.

Although cranberries give this smoothie its ruby red color, pineapple is no slouch in the nutrient department. Pineapple is another vitamin C superstar, but it also contains a powerful enzyme, bromelain, that helps the body digest proteins. Bromelain may also reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. That same enzyme may also exhibit anti-cancer properties, as it was able to kill cancer cells in some laboratory studies. However, pineapples cannot cure cancer and they do not eliminate a person’s cancer risk. Pineapple is a healthy food that you can add to your diet to encourage optimal overall health.

Although these a wellness shot is tiny, it packs a mighty punch. You are probably used to seeing ginger turmeric wellness shots, especially in health food stores, such as Whole Foods. Those are amazing anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting little shots, but they can be a little spicy, especially for the uninitiated. While ginger and turmeric receive a lot of attention regarding immune health, elderberry deserves equal, if not more, attention.

There are elderberry gummies, elderberry syrup, and even elderberry kombucha. Why can’t there be elderberry wellness shots? Thing of this recipe as a concentrated version of all of those recipes. You can use fresh or dried elderberries for this recipes, but you have to cook them first because they contain cyanogenic glycosides. Although they are not poisonous, they can be toxic and cause digestive discomfort, especially in people with sensitive digestive systems. The safest way to consume elderberries is to make sure that they are cooked first.

Although these shots have a vibrant purple hue because of the elderberry, the taste does not come from elderberries. In fact, elderberry doesn’t really have much of a flavor, which is why elderberry syrups and such are flavored by other ingredients, such as lemon, cinnamon, and ginger. Lemon provides vitamin C, which helps control inflammation and increase nutrient absorption. Finally, these shots contain echinacea, which, like elderberries, may help reduce the length and severity of viral illness, especially when it comes to bacterial infections. So although these wellness shots won’t cure an illness, they may help enhance immunity and improve recovery time.

At Dherbs, we strive to post unique recipes that fall into two categories: cleanse-approved and post-cleanse. The former category is for anyone who is looking to make food while using one of our many cleanses, while the latter is for anyone looking to eat healthy. One of the most popular things to enjoy while cleansing, especially for breakfast, is a smoothie. Rather than boring your taste buds with the same old smoothie every day of your cleanse, mix it up and get seasonal. That’s why we brought you this fall-inspired fig smoothie.

This spiced fall smoothie tastes similar to one of those fig bars that children eat. It has warming spices and is a pleasant alternative to pumpkin, which has been a featured ingredient in many of our recent recipes. We love a good pumpkin recipe, as it exhibits impressive healthy benefits, but figs also need a little love and appreciation. In many cultures, figs have long been used as a natural remedy for digestive issues. Figs contain a lot of fiber, which may help regulate bowel movements and reduce the risk of constipation. Fiber also acts as a prebiotic, which feeds the healthy bacteria in the gut.

Figs may also play a role in improving cardiovascular health. A 2023 review of some animal studies found that supplementing with fig leaf improved blood pressure, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. More human studies are necessary to better understand fig’s relationship to better cardiovascular health. Additionally, test-tube studies found that fig leaves exhibit anti-tumor activity against human breast, colon, lung, and cervical cancers, among a few others.

Kale can be a tricky leafy green to enjoy if you are not the biggest leafy green lover. That is especially true if you try to use kale as a salad base instead of Romaine lettuce. One of the easiest entry points to the world of kale is the smoothie. Pair your kale with fruits in the smoothie to help distract your taste buds from the slightly bitter flavor. Another thing to remember when adding kale to your smoothies is to remove the thicker, fibrous stems, as they have an unpleasant flavor that nobody needs to enjoy.

Smoothies are another way to add more greens to your diet. Most people do not consume the recommended daily intake of greens, which offer integral nutrients, such as fiber, magnesium, folate, iron, and vitamins A, C, and K. Statistically, people who eat more leafy greens have better immune function, optimized digestion, and have a lower risk of heart disease. Due to their low calorie content, leafy greens make great additions to your weight loss diet.

This smoothie isn’t all about kale, though. Peaches are low in calories and contain numerous health-promoting compounds, minerals, and vitamins. Fresh peaches are great sources of beta-carotene, which is a form of provitamin A that the body converts to vitamin A after ingestion. Vitamin A has been known to offer protection from lung and oral cancers, and helps maintain healthy mucus membranes and skin. Plus, peaches provide lots of potassium, which helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

There are several signature fall fruits, including apples, persimmons, pomegranates, grapes, figs, and cranberries. One of our favorite fall fruits is the pear, which is as versatile as it is refreshing and delicious. Pair your pears with sweet, spicy, savory, or tart flavors and you’ll be pleased. That’s why we added ginger to this pear smoothie. The natural sweetness of the pear is a great balance to the spicy kick of the fresh ginger.

Pears are often underutilized ingredients in smoothies. They are popular to enjoy as healthy snacks, but people also add them to salads and some desserts. These bell-shaped fruits deserve a little more attention in smoothie recipes, not only for their flavor, but also for their impressive nutritional profile. A single medium pear provides:

  • Calories: 101
  • Carbohydrates: 27 grams (g)
  • Protein: 1 g
  • Fiber: 6 g
  • Vitamin C: 9% of the daily value (DV)
  • Potassium: 4% of the DV
  • Copper: 16% of the DV
  • Vitamin K: 7% of the DV

The same serving also provides small amounts of other micronutrients, including folate, niacin, provitamin A, and polyphenol antioxidants. Pears with green skin, such as Bartlett pears, contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two compounds that are integral for healthy vision. Ruby-red pears, for example, contain anthocyanins that may help improve heart health and protect against certain types of cancer.
