There is nothing wrong with getting a little sun, especially when the weather is pleasant. It is easy to spend most of the day at the beach, in the park, in the garden, or by the pool. Problems arise if you do not take proper care of the skin when you are in the sun. While sunshine is necessary for vitamin D production in the body, too much sun can lead to a nasty sunburn, even if you are not in full summer heat.

What Is A Sunburn?

All it takes is some sun exposure without proper protection and the result is red, itchy skin that is warm to the touch. When you have a sunburn, ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning bed burn the skin. Some people get sunburns just doing everyday things like gardening without sunscreen or taking a lunch break outside. If you get sunburnt often, you increase your risk of premature skin aging and skin cancer. Fortunately, you can take steps to reduce sunburn risk by applying sunscreen, being in the shade between periods of sunshine, and wearing protective clothing. You can also:

  • Wear a hat to cover your head, neck, and ears (depending on the hat)
  • Stay out of the sun during the most intense hours of sunshine (about noon to four in the afternoon)
  • Wear light colored clothing to repel the sun’s rays

Getting out of the sun during intense hours may not always be convenient. You could be at a ball game, a child’s soccer practice, or at a work function. Tank tops and shorts leave skin exposed, and even the best sunscreen may not fully protect the skin. You also have to worry about the severity of skin damage from sunburn. The two most common types of sunburn are:

  • First-degree sunburn, which damages the skin’s outer layer, typically heals on its own within a few days to a week
  • Second-degree sunburn, which damages the middle section of the skin (dermis), can result in blisters on sunburned skin. The skin can take a couple weeks to heal and you may require medical treatment.

How Common Is Sunburn?

Sunburns are very common, especially in young people, as they are not as careful about applying sunscreen and taking other measures to protect the skin. Somewhere between 50% and 75% of children under the age of 18 have sunburns every year. More than 50% of adults between ages 18 and 29 reported having one or more sunburns in 2015. If you have a sunburn, the good news is that you can treat it on your own. Some easy ways to promote accelerated healing include:

  • Take a cool bath or shower, or experiment with an oatmeal or baking soda bath to soothe irritated skin.
  • Cover your sunburned skin when you go outside so that you do not worsen your existing sunburn.
  • Once the skin is cool, stop ongoing damage by applying ointments or petroleum jelly to the affected area. These will help moisturize the skin and aid healing without scarring.
  • Drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Use topical cooling and hydrating products, such as creams or aloe vera gel.
  • Use the sunburn relief lotion bars (recipe below), which contain ingredients that help to soothe and soften sunburned skin, while aiding quicker recovery in the process.

DIY Sunburn Relief Lotion Bars

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons shea butter
  • 1/2 cup dried chamomile
  • 6 tablespoons beeswax
  • 4 tablespoons aloe vera gel
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F. Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and chamomile to an oven-safe pan or saucepan and place in the oven for two hours to infuse the chamomile into the oil and shea butter.
  • Remove from the oven, strain the oil, and discard the chamomile.
  • In the same pan or saucepan, add the infused oil and beeswax and then place the pan back in the oven so the beeswax can infuse with the already melted mixture.
  • Remove from the oven and stir in the aloe vera gel and lavender essential oil.
Pour into silicone molds or ice cube trays and allow them to completely solidify at room temperature.
  • Once firm, pop the bars out of the molds and store in the fridge in an airtight container in the fridge if you want a cooling effect. They will keep fresh for up to six weeks.
  • Apply to sunburned skin as needed.

If you want to make your skin feel soft and silky smooth, it’s time to work some lotion bars into your skin care regimen. Great for rough elbows and knees, the lemon balm lotion bars in this article help to moisturize the skin without leaving a greasy feel. Although most of the research on lemon balm focuses on relieving indigestion, treating nausea, easing insomnia, and boosting cognition, it can greatly benefit the skin. In fact, lemon balm exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce swelling and redness.

What Is Lemon Balm?

Lemon balm belongs to the mint family and many health experts refer to it as a calming herb. It has an invigorating aroma that is wonderful and lemony. Although it grows all over the world, lemon balm is native to Europe and tends to attract bees. The plant can grow up to two feet high, or higher, if not maintained. Rub the leaves between your fingers and it’ll smell like you just juiced a lemon!

Health Benefits Of Lemon Balm

One study examined lemon balm for its potential photoprotective properties. Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the causes of many cutaneous disorders, like photoaging and skin cancer. The study evaluated the protective effects of lemon balm extract and its primary phenolic compound rosmarinic acid against UVB-induced damage in human keratinocytes. Researchers also found caffeic acid and luteolin glucuronide in lemon balm extract. The extract and rosmarinic acid significantly increased the survival of human keratinocytes upon UVB radiation, but lemon balm extract proved more effective. That means that lemon balm extract may be a candidate for topical photoprotective ingredients against UVB-induced skin damage.

Lemon balm may help relieve symptoms of stress and aid relaxation by promoting feelings of calmness. A 2022 review found that compounds in lemon balm exhibit relaxing effects. In the review, the authors summarized older studies that confirmed lemon balm helped reduce anxiety in people who underwent laboratory-induced stress.

Lemon balm contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Because of that, lemon balm may be a great pore-cleansing ingredient, removing bacteria associated with acne. It may also assist in the healing of minor wounds, scrapes, or insect bites by inhibiting bacterial growth. One study monitored participants who applied lemon balm extract on lesions within 72 hours of their origin. The results indicated that lemon balm was able to both reduce wound size and accelerate the time of healing.

Homemade Lemon Balm Lotion Bars

Ingredients For Lemon Balm-Infused Oil:

  • 1/2 cup lemon balm leaves
  • 1 cup jojoba oil

Instructions For Lemon Balm-Infused Oil:

  • Once you have the fresh lemon balm leaves, you have to rinse and then dry them in a dehydrator.
  • Place the leaves on a dehydrator tray and place in the dehydrator at 115º F for a couple hours, or until dried.
  • Place the dried leaves in a jar and then pour in the jojoba oil. Screw on the lid and place the jar in a dark place for four to six weeks for the slow infusion method. You can shake the jar every once in a while.
  • The other method, which is quicker, is to place the jar in a saucepan with a couple inches of water over low heat for two hours. Remove from heat and allow the oil to cool before straining the oil through a fine mesh sieve.

Ingredients For Lotion Bars:

  • 1/4 cup infused oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • 1/4 cup shea butter

Instructions:

  • Add the infused oil, beeswax, and shea butter to the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Heat and stir until the beeswax and shea butter are completely melted.
  • Remove from heat and pour the melted mixture into heat-safe silicone molds. Allow them to solidify at room temperature.
  • Pop the lotion bars out of the molds and place in containers and store in a cool, dry place. Use as needed.

Who needs Larabars when you can easily make your own with three simple ingredients? These are perfect if you have been looking to enjoy healthy snack options during your cleanse. They provide outstanding flavor and lots of fiber, healthy fats, and protein, all of which help keep you full between meals. The dates and cashews establish a great balance of nuttiness and sweetness, and the pinch of sea salt gives the bars a little extra pizzazz. It’s almost like a pinch of sea salt on a chocolate chip cookie or delectable caramel. You truly can’t go wrong with a pinch of sea salt in sweet treats.

For this recipe you will need Medjool dates, raw cashews, and sea salt. Dates are naturally sweet and sticky, providing the base for these bars. Make sure your dates are soft and fresh. Need assistance blending? Soak the dates in warm water for about 15 minutes prior to blending them in the food processor. Raw cashews also blend a little easier if you soak them for an hour or so. Just make sure that you discard the soaking water for both the dates and cashews if you decide to soak them. Not a fan of cashews? You can swap them for any raw nut in the same amount. Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and more work great!

After you blend the ingredients and achieve a sticky, dough-like consistency, you will transfer the mixture to an 8″x8″ baking pan lined with parchment paper. Press the mixture into the pan until you have an even layer that is about 1/2-inch or so thick. Freeze for 30 minutes and then remove from the freezer. That will ensure that the bars are somewhat solidified to the point where you can cut them into 10 bars. Separate them and consider wrapping them individually in plastic wrap. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Pride Month is a chance to celebrate the community, acceptance, and equality of LGBTQIA+ people. There are parades, events, parties, and more all over the world during Pride Month. It’s safe to say that this month can positively affect mental health by bringing more LGBTQIA+ people together as one community. The idea is that these celebrations bring hope for a brighter future, one that is united for LGBTQIA+ rights and equality.

What Is Pride Month?

It was 1969 and the sun was shining…In all seriousness, Pride Month started with the Stonewall uprising in 1969. These protests were in response to police raids in gay bars in New York. These raids took place due to discrimination and persecution against the LGBTQIA+ community. After the Stonewall uprising, the first Pride Rally in the United Kingdom took place a few years later in London, England.

Every June, Pride Month honors the history of Stonewall and the activism it sparked to push LGBTQIA+ rights to the place where they are today. Although Pride Month is somewhat of a mild protest, it is truly a movement, a chance for people to fight for equality and stand on the shoulders of the activists who came before them. Additionally, Pride Month is a celebration of the spaces that members of the LGBTQIA+ community can share. It’s hugely helpful, empowering, and a way to recognize queer lives. And the biggest benefit is that people of the LGBTQIA+ community get to unite together and remember that they are not alone.

The Context Of Pride Month And Mental Health

Mental health is important, regardless of the time of year or specific celebratory month. Regarding Pride Month, though, there has been a lot of discrimination and prejudice against the LGBTQIA+ community, and that still exists to this day. The rights for LGBTQIA+ members are still ongoing, and Pride Month continues to be somewhat of a catalyst for positive change and equality.

It is often the joyous times and celebratory nature of Pride Month that benefit people of the LGBTQIA+ community. For example, the inclusion and unified efforts help combat social isolation, low self-esteem, and the homophobic or transphobic political stances in the media. It is truly sad that people still have these hateful or negative views toward the LGBTQIA+.

A lot of LGBTQIA+ activists have observed two interesting things regarding Pride Month. The first is that the fight for equality and rights can be quickly weaponized against them. The second is that LGBTQIA+ people often dim their internal light for safety, depending on the setting, situation, or surrounding people.

How Can Pride Month Enhance Mental Health In The LGBTQIA+ Community?

Whether it’s a publicized goal or not, Pride Month brings together the LGBTQIA+ community and all its diversity. There is beauty in diversity and community, but it can be tough for people to individually navigate their own isolation. Many organizations and peer spaces are available to the LGBTQIA+ community and are there for people, in good times and bad.

Pride Month also helps undo what the negative media puts out against the community. A lot of people who may not be “out” yet or struggle with their own gender identity or sexuality. Pride Month, then, serves as a space of solidarity for those still living in the closet.

At the end of the day, Pride Month is a time of acceptance, despite whatever homophobia, transphobia, or biphobia still exists in the world. It is for the LGBTQIA+ community, but allyship can help advance community efforts. Families and friends of LGBTQIA+ community members can help participate in events and empower everyone. Being a great ally can help advance the community, but it also means that you learn more about the issues that affect the LGBTQIA+ community. You are there for the people in your life who require support!

Sometimes you need to have a dessert that also functions as a snack. Not just a snack, a filling, energizing, nutrient-dense snack! No, we are not talking about a refreshing bowl of fruit. We are referring to these raw chocolate cranberry squares. You can make them thinner and cut them into bars to take on the go, or you can keep them thicker and cut them into smaller squares. Think of these like energy balls, only in square or rectangular form.

To make these chocolate cranberry squares, you add all of the ingredients to a food processor and blend until you achieve a dough-like clump. Keep in mind that you will likely have to stop blending, scrape down the sides of the processor bowl, and continue blending to fully incorporate all of the ingredients. It’s perfectly acceptable if you see small chunks of almonds and walnuts. They add a nice crunchy texture to these bars, which are quite soft.

Once all of the ingredients are thoroughly blended, remove the mixture from the food processor and press it into a square pan lined with parchment paper. The parchment paper is crucial because it prevents sticking. Listen, if you enjoy soaking your baking dish for a full day and then scrubbing it three times to clean off the chocolatey goodness sounds fun, you don’t have to use parchment paper. We will let you take that journey on your own. We just want to make your life as easy as possible!

When you adhere to a raw vegan, you need snacks that fill you up and taste good. You don’t want to eat snacks that taste bland or drink beverages that taste like lawn clippings. We strive to provide all of you with recipes that have incredible depth of flavor. The worst thing you can do while cleansing is eat tasteless or boring meals and snacks. Not only does that make you disinterested in raw vegan foods, but it also increases your likelihood of cheating with unhealthy foods.

These homemade fig bars are filling and unlike store bought versions, they do not contain artificial flavors, preservatives, or added sugars. You know the ones, right? The brand name rhymes with Schmig Toopins. Separately, figs and almonds are nutritious snacks that you can enjoy any day of the week. Each of these foods provides a unique set of nutrients that can help you meet your daily nutritional needs. Together,

Now, you won’t be using fresh figs for these fig bars, though. You’ll use dried figs, and we recommend that you get dried Smyrna figs for optimum flavor. The kiss of citrus that you get from the orange zest in every bite is simply wonderful. And the best part about these fig bars is that you don’t get the inevitable sugar crash that comes from store bought varieties. The reason for this is because these contain fiber, healthy fats, and protein without the added sugars that cause blood sugar spikes. Just don’t go crazy on them because they aren’t low in calories.

6 Foods With More Sugar Than You Think https://www.dherbs.com/articles/6-foods-with-more-sugar-than-you-think/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 09:19:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=162451

Added sugars lurk in some foods that are marketed as being healthy. Here are a few common culprits to either limit or avoid completely.

The post 6 Foods With More Sugar Than You Think appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

We don’t know who needs to hear this, but sugar isn’t doing your body any favors, especially when it comes to excess sugar intake. Added sugars are the real danger because natural sugars, which exist in whole, unprocessed foods, supply the body with natural energy in appropriate amounts. Plus, natural sugars come with other nutrients like fiber, protein, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Added sugars rapidly cause a spike in blood sugar, creating a cascade of metabolically damaging reactions. When you regularly consume large amounts of added sugars, you increase the risk of fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, systemic inflammation, and insulin resistance. All of those health conditions are linked to overweight and obesity.

Although the U.S. dietary guidelines suggest that people limit added sugar intake to less than 10% of their daily calories, three out of four people typically exceed that percentage. You may think that you are safe if you don’t add sugar to food, but several foods, which aren’t even sweet, account for 90% of added sugar intake. Here are the most common foods that are sugar bombs.

Canned Soup

Canned soup is not only a source of excess sodium, but also lots of sugar. Tomato soups tend to contain the highest levels of added sugars, with certain condensed varieties containing 20 grams (g) of sugar per one-cup serving. The reason that manufacturers add so much sugar to tomato soups is to balance the taste and reduce acidity. Always check soup labels carefully before you buy them.

Tomato Sauce

Sticking in the same lane as tomato soups, store bought tomato sauces in jars are sneaky sources of sugar. These sauces are convenient, but they contain high amounts of both sodium and sugar. Once again, the sugar cuts the acidic taste of tomatoes and helps extend the shelf life. Certain jarred sauces contain four grams of sugar in a half-cup, per the USDA. It is very easy to make your own tomato sauce without the need for excess sodium and sugar!

Granola And Snack Bars

When you enjoy granola for breakfast, are you actually eating glorified sugar? When you fuel up with a snack bar, are you overloading your body with sugar? Both granola and snack bars sound much healthier than they actually are. Some bars contain upwards of 10 grams of sugar, along with other processed ingredients that aren’t conducive to your health. If you see names for sugar at the top of the ingredient list, avoid those products. Watch out for brown sugar syrup, corn syrup, fructose, and other names for sugars. Instead, opt for a handful of raw nuts or unsweetened dried fruit.

Dried Fruit

Seemingly healthy, dried fruit can contain a lot of sugar, if you purchase certain varieties. A single handful of dried cranberries, for example, can contain 29 g of added sugars. That’s in addition to the naturally occurring sugars that already exist in cranberries. Just remember that added sugar levels tend to be higher in fruits that are naturally tart. If you buy dried fruit, look for options that only list the fruit as the ingredient. You want to avoid added sugars and preservatives like sulfur dioxide.

Salad Dressing

Salad dressing is another store bought item that contains unhealthy fats, high levels of sodium, and lots of added sugars. The sad reality is that dressings seem healthy because they go on salads. Some dressings contain six grams of sugar per serving (about 2 tablespoons). Fat-free dressings tend to have the most added sugars and sodium because removing fat reduces flavor. Your best bet is to make your own dressings with olive oil, balsamic/apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and seasonings.

Flavored Yogurt

Shouldn’t yogurt be on your list of healthy foods to enjoy for breakfast? This all depends on the type of yogurt you purchase. Plain Greek yogurt, for example, is a great source of probiotics and an excellent breakfast food option. If you buy flavored yogurts, or varieties that contain fruit jam on the top or bottom, the sugar content will be very high. Read the ingredients because you need to steer clear if you see sugar in the top three ingredients on the list. Enjoying plain yogurt with fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, or unsweetened dried fruit provide great flavors and nutrients.

Sometimes, you just have to let the ingredients speak for themselves. That’s exactly what this recipe does! Completely raw vegan, these key lime coconut bars have a zesty flair, nutty crust, and great textures. No, the key lime layer does not resemble some nuclear green that looks incredibly unhealthy for you. This filling is closer to beige or off white with small speckles of green from the lime zest.

On the topic of limes, the recipe does call for freshly squeezed key lime juice. Now, if you cannot get your hands on key limes, you can use regular limes as a replacement. The same thing applies for the zest, as you will just use zest from whichever limes you can get your hands on. Limes offer a wide variety of nutrients, with one lime providing 32% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Both lime juice and lime zest contain nutrients that may support heart health and improve the appearance of skin. Before you zest the limes, make sure to give them a good rinse and then pat them dry.

Although this recipe is made with raw vegan, all-natural ingredients, it does contain a hefty amount of calories. Coconut oil, raw walnuts, and raw cashews are calorically dense, so make sure you don’t eat all of these bars at once. One square will not only satiate you, but it will also satisfy your sweet tooth. The healthy fats are beneficial for the brain, heart, and your appetite. Plus, the fiber in the cashews and walnuts will keep you from eating 10 squares at time. Happy desserting!

Energy bars are great to have because you never know when hunger will strike. Not only are these bars very easy to make, but they are convenient for on-the-go snacking. The simple ingredient list is another plus because most energy bars contain added sugars, preservatives, and dyes. These bars provide you with protein, fiber, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals! That’s because these bars include dried apricots, raw cashews, hemp seeds, desiccated coconut, and coconut oil.

The big debate is whether or not energy bars such as these can actually provide you with energy. Yes, is the simple answer. The reason for that is because energy bars typically contain an easily digestible carbohydrate, such as dried fruit, which break down quickly for immediate energy. Energy bars also contain nuts and/or seeds, which provide a mixture of health fats, protein, and carbs, all of which help boost energy levels. An important thing to consider when consuming energy bars, though, is to enjoy them when you need them. Ideally, consume these energy bars before a workout, in the middle of a busy day, or first thing in the morning. Consuming bars later at night won’t do your body good.

When it comes to buying dried apricots, or dried fruit in general, we encourage you to buy unsulfured, unsweetened varieties. Dried apricots that contain sulfuric acid, preservatives, and added sugars, are orange and extra juicy. The ones without those same ingredients are often a bit chewier and more brown. Those are the ones you want if you are cleansing. If you aren’t cleansing, then you can choose your own destiny, but know that unsulfured dried fruits are better for your health.

Two things we love in this world are almonds and dates. We love many things, but these two food ingredients are versatile, delicious, filling, and loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Dates provide a natural sweetness that balances the nutty, slightly bitter flavor of raw almonds. Add the creamy raw almond butter into the equation and you have a recipe for some of the best raw vegan energy bars you can imagine.

Full of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, these homemade almond butter bars are about to become your favorite go-to snack. While there are many reasons to love almonds, especially in regards to their flavor, we appreciate their health properties. Many health studies confirmed that almonds have the ability to boost brain health, regulate cholesterol levels and blood sugar, reduce inflammation, promote heart health, and more. Because of their antioxidant content, almonds may enhance skin complexion and fight free radicals. Most importantly, they provide you sustained energy. And who doesn’t need more energy? Well, maybe not your children, but adults can always use a little boost, especially to avoid energy drinks between meals. Use food to help energize the body and prevent unnecessary, unhealthy snacking.
