Get ready to enjoy a light and refreshing slaw recipe that is made without mayo or heavy dressing. Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break from the traditional coleslaw and make a lighter variation. This recipe is exactly that, and makes for a perfect side dish, taco topper, or salad substitute if you are cleansing. Plus, the lighter slaw is much lower in calories and fat than a traditional slaw with mayo-based dressing. Cabbage itself is low in calories, but the dressing is where the calories and fat come from. Not in this recipe, though!

You can’t have slaw without cabbage, which offers a rich nutritional profile. Cabbage provides vitamins C & K, fiber, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Some of the antioxidant compounds in cabbage may contribute to DNA protection and offer protection against certain types of cancer. Now, while cabbage is a nutritious ingredient, jalapeños also offer surprising health benefits. Commonly used in Mexican cuisine but popular worldwide, jalapeños are vibrant green hot peppers that are naturally rich in vitamins C, B6, A, & K, in addition to folate, manganese, and beneficial antioxidants.

Several lab studies indicate that capsaicin, an alkaloid compound in jalapeños and other peppers, exhibits strong anti-cancer properties. In fact, it has the potential to kill over 40 types of cancer cells without harming normal, healthy cells. Capsaicin works to fight cancer by stopping the growth and division of cancer cells, slowing the formation of new blood cells around tumors, and preventing the spread to other areas in the body. Will eating this cilantro lime slaw reduce your cancer risk? We can’t speak to that, but the ingredients speak for themselves! We hope you enjoy the slaw!

In essence, coffee oil is a concentrated, aromatic oil that comes from green, non-roasted coffee beans, or roasted coffee beans and grounds. Coffee is a significant commodity in many parts of the world, with many new and historic trade routes. In fact, coffee’s history can be traced back to the 15th century, when cultivation and trade started to flourish along the Arabian Peninsula, with the first coffee houses established in Mecca and Constantinople.

Just like today’s coffee houses, those historic coffee houses were places to meet, socialize, listen to music, discuss the news, and enjoy performances. They just didn’t have people watching Instagram stories on their phones or working on their laptops. Since those times, coffee has made its way around the world. Today, Brazil remains the most prominent coffee producer in the world.

It’s important to note that all fine specialty coffees come from Coffea arabica, which produces about 70% of the world’s coffee. Coffee that is of this variety usually exhibits superior flavor and quality when compared to other principal commercial coffee species.

What Is Coffee Oil?

Coffee oil can be made from green, non-roasted coffee beans, or from roasted coffee beans. Roasted coffee bean oil can actually be burned like incense to deodorize a room. The aroma can help lift your mood and alleviate stress. Green coffee oil, on the other hand, is typically used in skincare products. That said, both oils contain high levels of caffeine, flavonoids, and antioxidant compounds. When combined with other oils for topical application, coffee oil has many positive benefits for the skin.

Benefits Of Coffee Oil

The active chemical components in coffee oil are responsible for its invigorating, refreshing, and aromatic qualities. Some of these compounds offer impressive anti-inflammatory properties, which help relieve soreness in the muscles. The flavonoids provide protection against free radicals, while simultaneously increasing immunity. These flavonoids may also help restore moisture to the skin, reduce puffiness under the eyes, and improve collagen production

Coffee oil’s flavonoids and fatty acids include palmitic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and stearic acid. We’ll detail their benefits below:

  • Palmitic acid: Offers anti-inflammatory and emollient properties. May help reduce dryness and accelerate the healing of rashes or insect bites on the skin. It also helps remove excess oil from the skin.
  • Linoleic acid: Known to add moisture to the skin and improve the appearance of damaged skin. It may also promote skin regeneration and help older skin appear slightly younger
  • Oleic acid: Works to soothe and calm the skin, while helping to balance and repair existing skin damage.
  • Stearic acid: Helps to soothe damaged skin and stabilize the texture in skin care products. It also offers cleansing and emulsifying properties.

How To Make Coffee Oil

Ingredients:

  • Organic roasted coffee grounds
  • Organic carrier oils (non-comedogenic, preferably)

Instructions:

  • There are two methods to make your own coffee oil: hot infusion or cold infusion. Cold infusion takes more time and hot infusion is ready within an hour or so.
  • For the heat infusion, add one cup of your carrier oil of choice to the top of a double boiler. Mix in a half-cup of coffee grounds and leave over low flame for one hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Strain the oil through a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve once the infusion process is complete. Store the oil in a jar until ready to use.
  • For the cold infusion method, add one cup of your carrier oil of choice to a jar and mix with a half-cup of coffee grounds.
  • Mix well, screw on the lid, and then store the jar in a cool, dark place for one month. Remove from the jar’s hiding place after a month and strain the oil using a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve.

This is potentially the quickest and easiest jam you’re ever going to make. You don’t have to simmer fruit and sugar for a while until it thickens into a sugary, jammy spread. You also don’t need added sugars or pectin to yield the consistency that is common in most jams. Another reason you don’t need pectin is because dried fruit only contains 22% water, so there is no need for a thickener. This raw apricot jam has incredible depth of flavor and made entirely from dried fruit, a touch of maple syrup, and a pinch of sea salt.

Since dried fruit contains less water than fresh fruit, you want to rehydrate it prior to making the jam. By rehydrating the dried fruit, you make it softer and easier to blend. Just soak in a bowl of warm water for a few hours and be sure to discard the soaking water. The reason we decided to use dried apricots is because they, much like figs, cherries, and plums, are juicier dried fruits. Just make sure that you purchase dried apricots that are free of sulfites, added sugars, and preservatives. Those dried apricots tend to be brown in color, so your jam may not be the most picturesque orange hue you’re dreaming of, but it is chemical-free and healthier.

Just like fresh fruit jam, dried fruit jam is very versatile. Use it instead of jelly on a classic PB&J sandwich, spread it on crepes, or use it as a topping for your yogurt bowl. It should be noted that all of those suggestions are acceptable to enjoy if you are not cleansing. Should you want to enjoy this while cleansing, you can use it as a topping for banana or cashew pudding, chia pudding, or on raw vegan ice cream.

The hibiscus is a colorful, flowering plant that is not only stunning to look at, but also valuable in the world of health and wellness. It can be made into teas, extracts, supplements, and more. You can even cook with the dried flower leaves, using them as a meat substitute. But we are not here to talk to you about the many uses of hibiscus today; rather, we come bearing an easy DIY facial scrub made with hibiscus powder, among other natural ingredients.

Why Should You Use Hibiscus?

Hibiscus grows in tropical and subtropical regions, including Mexico, Thailand, China, Nigeria, Sudan, and Hawaii. Native to Malaysia and India, hibiscus is naturally rich in bioactive compounds, which researchers attribute to the plant’s purported health benefits. For example, some of the reasons to use hibiscus include:

  • Anti-aging properties: Known for its ability to increase skin elasticity, hibiscus is sometimes referred to as “the botox plant.” Due to the vitamin C and antioxidant content, hibiscus works to firm and lift the skin, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Hibiscus is particularly rich in anthocyanins, which work to fight free radicals and reduce the risk of oxidative stress. Some research shows that anthocyanins may also prevent premature aging
  • Anti-inflammatory: Hibiscus contains anti-inflammatory properties, which may help soothe irritated skin, making it an ideal ingredient for people with acne or sensitive skin.
  • Natural exfoliant: According to research, the natural acids in hibiscus, which include alpha-hydroxy acids, work to gently exfoliate the skin. They may also help remove dead skin cells and promote a brighter, even complexion.
  • Promotes collagen production: Due to the high vitamin C content, hibiscus helps support the production of collagen, which is necessary for maintaining the skin’s elasticity.
  • Hydrating: Researchers note that the mucilage content in hibiscus provides great hydration, which helps maintain optimal moisture levels. This leaves the skin feeling soft and supple.
  • Natural cleanser: As we previously mentioned, hibiscus is a natural exfoliant. It is also a great cleanser, working to break down and remove impurities, helping to detoxify the skin and clean out pores.

Pink Kaolin Clay

Yet another ingredient that works absolute wonders for your skin. Researchers note that pink kaolin clay’s gentle nature makes it optimal for softening the skin. It will help leave it soft and refreshed after every use. Similar to hibiscus, this clay helps exfoliate the skin on a mild level. It may assist with the removal of dead skin cells, resulting in a smoother, glowing complexion. Due to the natural soothing properties, pink kaolin clay is an ideal ingredient for those with sensitive or irritated skin. It may even work to reduce inflammation or redness.

Pink kaolin clay, while gentle, works to absorb excess oil from the skin. That makes this clay beneficial for people with oily or combination skin types. What’s more, it doesn’t strip the skin of its natural moisture. Finally, because it is rich in minerals like silica, pink kaolin clay helps nourish the skin and give it strength, which contributes to the skin’s vitality.

DIY Deep Cleansing Hibiscus Facial Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons oats
  • 1/4 cup rose hips
  • 1/4 cup hibiscus powder
  • 3 tablespoon pink kaolin clay

Instructions:

  • Grind the oats into a very fine powder. You can use a food processor or immersion blender to do this. Repeat the process for the rose hips.
  • Add the ground oats and rose hips to a small mixing bowl with the hibiscus powder and pink kaolin clay. Mix well and then pour the mixture into a glass jar. Screw on the lid and store in a cool, dry place.
  • To use, slowly add water, one tablespoon at a time, to the powder mix and rub onto your face in circular motions for two minutes. Rinse with warm water and then pat your face dry. Do this two times per week.

We wish that we could create a delicious donut for all of our raw vegan cleansers to enjoy, but we don’t possess the talent, unfortunately. Instead, we created these cinnamon bliss balls, which help satisfy your sweet tooth while providing you with with healthy fats, fiber, protein, and more. They are not fried like donuts, nor are they baked. All you need is a food processor and the ingredients, plus a little freezer time to allow the balls to solidify.

We are not here to give you a lecture about these bliss balls; rather, we are here to tell you that YOU NEED TO MAKE THEM. Why is that the case? Well, they are just too delicious not to enjoy, especially during your cleanse. When you are cleansing, it is vital to have snacks that fill you up, as you do not want to constantly eat between your major meals. The fiber and healthy fats help you feel full for longer, but be careful to not eat too many of them at once. Due to the almonds, desiccated coconut, and dates, they are calorically dense. If you eat five of them, you’ll be consuming just over 600 calories!

To make these bliss balls, you will need a food processor, not a blender. There is no liquid in this recipe, except the maple syrup, so a blender would not be able to sufficiently blend the ingredients together. A food processor can handle the job! Once the ingredients form a dough-like consistency, you can stop processing and get ready to roll the bliss balls. Make sure to wet your hands with water to prevent the blended mixture from sticking to your hands. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, freeze until solid, and then enjoy.

This is a very simple dip that packs a big flavorful punch. Your taste buds won’t know what they hit them, even after you’ve taken 10 to 12 bites. There is just one thing that you have to remember to do for this recipe: make sure that you use the sun-dried tomatoes that are not in oil. These are also known as dry-packed tomatoes, which have a similar texture to dried fruit and come in sealed packages. Traditional oil-packed tomatoes are dried in the same way, only they are submerged in oil and flavorings after being dried.

What Is In This Dip?

To make a quick clarification, there are no olives in this dip, despite what you see in the picture. Additionally, you cannot enjoy this dip with bread if you are cleansing. Now, if you are not cleansing and want to enjoy this dip with a fresh piece of naan or pita bread, knock yourself out! As far as the dip goes, it is made from the following ingredients:

  • Raw cashews: These are great in dips because they are very creamy when blended. They are rich in iron, healthy fats, fiber, magnesium, zinc, and other nutrients.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes: Remember, only purchase the dry-packed sun-dried tomatoes for this recipe. They pack a ton of concentrated tomato flavor, making them great for dips, sauces, and spreads.
  • Garlic: If you are making a savory dish, it would be a shame to omit garlic. It’s great in both raw and cooked preparations, and works impressively well with the flavors in this spread. Garlic offers manganese, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, and antioxidants like alicin.
  • Lemon: Yet another favorite ingredient of ours, the mighty lemon provides a lovely acidic flavor to this dip. It is also rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and enhance immune function.

In addition to these ingredients, sea salt, paprika, and olive oil help make this dip come to life. Don’t forget that you can add a little water at a time if you need a little assistance blending.

Don’t want to snack on freshly cut fruit or chopped vegetables while cleansing? Time to make some energy balls! You can fully customize energy balls with different nuts, nut butters, seeds, seed butters, dried fruit, and more. This recipe, however, is nut-free and only requires three ingredients: dates, hemp hearts, and desiccated coconut. To make the quick distinction, desiccated coconut is not the same as a package of sweetened coconut flakes you see in the baking aisle of a grocery store. Desiccated coconut is unsweetened, grated coconut meat that has been dehydrated. Because it has no added sugars, the flavor is slightly nuttier.

Although any date variety will work for this recipe, we recommend Medjool dates because they are usually sweeter and more flavorful. Not a fan of dates? You can replace them with another dried fruit, such as dried figs or raisins. Just play around with the measurements in order to yield the best consistency possible. Energy balls are not an exact science, so your measurements do not need to be exact. We often eyeball each batch and they turn out just fine! If you are a stickler for the rules, though, we have the measured recipe for you to follow.

Due to the thick nature of the energy ball batter, which you form into balls with your hands, you must use a food processor. A food processor will easily blend the ingredients together until they form a clumpy, dough-like consistency. Once you achieve that, it’s time to get rolling! Just make sure that you wet your hands with water first to avoid the mixture sticking to your hands. It will yield about 10-12 energy balls, which you can store in an airtight container in the fridge for two weeks, or in the freezer for up to two months.

You don’t have to go out and buy an ice cream machine or churner in order to enjoy homemade ice cream. As long as you have a blender or food processor and a freezer-safe container, you can enjoy a guilt-free dessert such as this recipe. Sure, peanut butter and chocolate ice cream is highly popular, but not everyone is a fan. Some people are also allergic to peanuts, so having an almond butter ice cream is the next best (and safest) option, provided there are no additional nut allergies.

A nut butter ice cream is such a simple concept, but packs a lot of flavor. Nut butters are naturally creamy and thick, so they help make the raw vegan ice cream a little creamier, acting similarly to frozen bananas. The dates in this recipe also help thicken the ice cream, but make sure that you soak them for one to two hours prior to blending them with the rest of the ingredients. The soaking process helps soften them, making the job a little easier on your blender. If you plan to use a food processor or have a VitaMix, you don’t have to soak your dates for longer than 15-30 minutes.

The almond butter primarily flavors this ice cream, and the flavor may change depending on the almond butter you use. Your choices are limited for almond butter since you have to use raw almond butter while cleansing. That said, different brands typically taste different. No matter which raw almond butter you use, one thing is for certain: this raw ice cream is absolutely delicious and creamy. We hope you love it as much as we do. How could you not? It’s a great source of healthy fats, protein, omega-3s, magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals.

Are ready for a salsa that is so good that it’ll carry you all the way from spring through summer? Well, get your palate ready because you just clicked on that recipe! So zingy, zangy, zesty, and incredibly refreshing, this kiwi salsa will jazz up any night of the week. Say goodbye to any sluggishness that stems from colder weather when you enjoy this salsa bite after bite. It’s like sunshine for your taste buds!

You might be thinking, “How can I enjoy this salsa without chips if I am cleansing?” That’s a valid question, considering that you cannot have packaged chips during the cleansing process. You can, however, make your own dehydrated chips from root vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, zucchini, parsnip, and more. Use those vegetable chips as your dipping vessels to enjoy this addicting salsa. Alternatively, you can spoon this salsa into small lettuce cups and enjoy it that way.

For this salsa, choose kiwis that are ripe, or else your salsa will have a sour flavor profile. If green kiwis are too tart for your palate, consider using golden kiwis, as they have a sweeter flavor. Unlike other salsas that you are familiar with, this one contains ginger, which pairs beautifully with kiwi. Instead of using red onion, we opted for shallots because they exhibit a sweet mildness that doesn’t overpower the other ingredients. The savoriness of cilantro plays well off the slightly tart kiwi and, well, you can’t have a salsa without fresh lime juice. That’s the ingredient that ties everything together!

Sometimes you have a salad prepared, but there is no dressing in sight. Sure, you can whip up a quick apple cider vinaigrette in a matter of minutes, but sometimes your taste buds require something more elevated. Enter this cilantro lime dressing. The truth is that a salad dressing is 50% (if not more) of a salad. A terrible dressing will ruin a salad, no matter the salad ingredients. Not every dressing goes with every salad, though. Sometimes, though, you find a dressing that seems to go great with every salad recipe, and that is how we feel about this dressing.

The great thing about this cilantro dressing is that you can use it on a raw vegan salad, pasta salad, a bowl of quinoa, a marinade for wild caught fish, or as a dipping sauce for roasted vegetables. In a normal recipe, you’d see Greek yogurt or sour cream on the ingredient list. Because this is a raw vegan recipe, we used avocado to achieve the same creaminess that those ingredients would be used for. Additionally, we added some fresh jalapeño to kick up the spice just a hair. If you are a bit timid around spicy food, you can omit this ingredient. Curious about a little spice? De-seed the jalapeño and then add it to the blender with the rest of the ingredients.

With spring approaching, this is the perfect dressing to have in your pocket of recipes. It goes great with refreshing salads that have sweet, tangy, and slightly bitter ingredients. Because it has avocado, you’ll consume a lot of healthy fats along with your salad, which helps fill you up: a crucial thing to keep in mind if you are cleansing. Finally, make sure that you consume this dressing within three to four days for optimum freshness.
