Making your own face serum is fun and simple, not to mention beneficial for your skin. A face serum can add moisture and high concentrations of nutrients for your skin. Basically, a serum is a thin-viscosity topical product that will penetrate the skin’s surface more effectively. Due to the higher concentration of active ingredients, it may take a shorter amount of time to see visible results.

Wondering why you cannot just use a moisturizer or face cream in place of a serum? First and foremost, there is no rule saying that you have to use a serum. A serum just happens to be lighter and delivers more active ingredients to the skin quickly, after you’ve cleansed the skin. You also have to seal the serum in with a moisturizer or face cream. Think of a serum like a secret weapon for your facial skin, especially if you want to target dullness, fine lines, or acne.

How To Select A Carrier Oil

There are a few things to consider when choosing a carrier oil. Some of the best options are grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, rose hip oil, sweet almond oil, and tamanu oil. The reason that those are great is because they do not clog pores and enhance moisture in the skin. We will detail a few benefits of each of those oils below:

 • Grapeseed oil: Great for all skin types, but it is most beneficial for oily skin because it helps reduce the risk of breakouts.
 • Jojoba oil: This oil helps support the skin’s pH balance and is very lightweight. Its molecular structure is similar to sebum, the oil that the skin naturally produces, making it great for all skin types.
 • Rose hip oil: With a subtle aroma, rose hip oil is great for tissue regeneration and dull or aging skin. You can combine it with other carrier oils at a 10-20% ratio, and it can be used on all skin types, especially mature skin.
 • Sweet almond oil: Soothing, nourishing, and offering a light aroma, sweet almond oil helps create an even skin tone with its light texture. It is greatly beneficial for dry skin.
 • Tamanu oil: Known for its wound-healing properties, tamanu oil helps form new tissue because of the rich antioxidant content. It also works to reduce the appearance of acne scars and is commonly used for oily or acne-prone skin.

How To Select The Right Essential Oils

Essential oils can be tricky, especially if you have sensitive skin. Beauty experts agree that frankincense, blue tansy, and lavender essential oil are great for any skin type. All of those oils will work beautifully in your DIY face serum. Should you want to choose others or select a combination of them, consider the following when selecting the oils:

 • Sensitive skin: Frankincense, rose, helichrysum, and copaiba oils are great for those with sensitive skin.
 • Mature skin: Ylang ylang, helichrysum, sandalwood, and rose oils are excellent choices.
 • Dry skin: For those with dry skin, royal Hawaiian sandalwood, myrrh, jasmine, clary sage, and cedarwood oils are the top picks.
 • Oily skin: Many essential oils benefit oily skin, but the best ones are lemon, grapefruit, ylang ylang, cypress, tea tree, and geranium essential oils.

You may want to mix and match different oils for your skin type. You can also select many other essential oils that are quite refreshing. Just keep in mind that citrus oils may cause photosensitivity when out in the sun. Should you want to use citrus essential oils, apply them at night or when you are not going to be in the sun.

Before you make the serum, figure out which carrier oils and essential oils work best for your skin type. Once you figure that out, you are all set!

DIY Face Serum

Ingredients:

 • 2 ounces carrier oil of choice
 • 15-20 drops essential oils for each ounce in the bottle

Instructions:

 • After selecting your carrier oil, pour it into a small dropper bottle and then add the essential oils. Ideally, only use two essential oils in this glow serum
 • Screw on the dropper lid and shake until fully mixed.
 • When ready, use five to eight drops on your face and massage gently.

The autumn harvest brings an array of root vegetables for comforting, hardy recipes that warm the soul. You’ll also see numerous fruits that you don’t typically see any other time of year. We don’t know about you, but fruit that is in season for a limited time is very exciting. Not only do these fruits exhibit impressive nutritional profiles, but they also taste great and are quite versatile.

A 2020 study found that vegetarians who ate a diverse mix of fruits and vegetables had a lower risk of stroke than non-vegetarians who ate meat. An additional study from 2021 also gives people a reason to eat more fruits and vegetables. In this study, participants who ate the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables per day experienced a lower risk of death than those who ate fewer servings. Additionally health experts encourage people to eat seasonal produce items because they are at peak freshness and nutritional value. Choosing seasonal produce will also help reduce your carbon footprint, as fresh and local items don’t need to be transported long distances. We are talking about farm to table!

For more inspiration and information about seasonal produce items, visit your local farmer’s market and talk with the farmers. They are very knowledgeable about the flavor profiles and how to use/cook with the various produce items. To buy you some time until that happens, we’ve outlined the top seven fall fruits below.

Kumquats

Don’t know what kumquats are? They are about the size of grapes, but they are citrus fruits and happen to be one of the best sources of fiber and vitamin C. Although they are technically winter fruits, they often show up in mid to late fall. In some areas, such as the Southern United States, they are available year round because of the warmer climates. Kumquats are the only citrus fruit that you can eat with the peel, which contains even more antioxidants than the fruit’s flesh.

Quinces

A lesser known fall fruit, the quince is probably not in your regular fruit rotation. It resembles a lumpy, slightly larger pear, exhibiting a bright green skin. Quince is naturally rich in vitamin C, potassium, copper, fiber, and antioxidants, including rutin and caffeoylquinic acid. Most people boil quince to enjoy it, as that is the best way to enjoy the best flavor. Quarter the fruit, remove the core and seeds, and boil for about 40 minutes. You can add the flesh to juices, tarts, sweet treats, and purees.

Pears

We are going from the quince, a fruit that somewhat resembles a pear, to the actual pear fruit. From Anjous and Bartletts to Forelle and Seckels varieties, pears are a hydrophilic food, meaning they fill you up quickly and love water. Pears contain the complex carbohydrate known as pectin, which acts as a detox agent, immune system stimulant, and gastrointestinal tract regulator. According to several studies, eating pears on a regular basis may help reduce bad cholesterol levels and regulate the body’s absorption of sugar.

Cranberries

You cannot have an article that details the best fall fruits and leave cranberries off the list. Fresh cranberries are only available for a limited time, typically from mid to late fall. Harvested in places like the Northeast United States, cranberries are valuable sources of plant compounds like benzoic acid, anthocyanins, quercetin, vitamin C, and epicatechins. Cranberries go great in sauces, pies, scones, muffins, salads, smoothies, and desserts. A 2022 study found that participants who took a cranberry supplement (the equivalent of one cup of cranberries) daily for 12 weeks improved memory and lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Apples

Apples are the quintessential fall fruit, and one of the best fall outings is to go apple picking at an orchard. Available in many varieties, apples are excellent sources of fiber, vitamin C, and polyphenols, which are beneficial plant compounds that exist in plant-based foods. Polyphenols may help to reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, according to several research studies. Flavonoids, which are also present in apples, may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and general cognitive decline.

Grapes

Although grapes are available year round, they boast their best flavor during fall. Enjoy varieties like champagne, concords, holiday seedless, and many others. Grapes don’t seem to get a lot of attention when it comes to nutrition, but they are excellent sources of vitamin C, vitamin K, and antioxidants like resveratrol, an anti-inflammatory compound that keeps your skin looking young. Grapes also contain anthocyanin, another antioxidant that has ties to longevity.

Passion Fruit

Passion fruits are available in the early- or mid-fall months, and they grow in climates that are always warm. The actual fruit is quite gelatinous, with black seeds that are also edible. The taste is a bit sour, but riper passion fruits tend to be on the sweeter and highly fragrant side. You can incorporate passion fruit into acai bowls, smoothies, and juices. They are naturally rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, beta-cryptoxanthin, carotenoids, and other polyphenols.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. That is about two cups of fruits and two and a half cups of vegetables, but there is nothing wrong with consuming more than that. In fact, some studies suggest that consuming more than five servings of fruits and vegetables per day may provide additional health benefits.

Smoothies can help you reach your five servings per day in no time, especially if you drink more than one during the day. The beautiful thing about smoothies is that you do not have to follow a specific formula to make them successfully. There are few rules as to what you should throw in a blender. For example, you can add spinach, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peanut butter, almond milk, chia seeds, and more and it will likely taste incredible. Just remember that smoothies should be a diverse mix of fruits and vegetables, not just fruits, as that can increase your blood sugar.

Immune Boosting Smoothies

When you are looking to support the immune system, you can add immune-boosting ingredients to your smoothies. Ideally, you want to include fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins A, C, E, D, and K, zinc, selenium, and B-vitamins. The following smoothies are designed to optimize immune function. Drink them when you feel a tickle in your throat or if you feel like your health needs a boost. You can also enjoy them whenever you like, even if you feel like a million bucks!

As a quick note, if you feel a little run down and require some extra immune-boosting assistance, feel free to add some Dherbs products to your smoothies. You can empty the capsules of our Immune Formula, Vitamin C, or Anti-V supplement into the smoothie and blend it up. That is also a great way to consume our supplements if you have difficulty swallowing capsules. Enjoy our smoothies that support the immune system.

Vitamin C Smoothie

Although there are myriad cleaning products that are a bit more natural than traditional chemical-laden classics, they don’t compare to DIY non-toxic cleaners. You know exactly what goes into the products that you make yourself. There are no hidden fragrances or hard-to-pronounce names on products that you make yourself. And one the easiest household products to clean with is vinegar, which is probably in your pantry as you read this.

Distilled white vinegar, which is available in organic versions, is a powerhouse in the natural cleaning world. You don’t want the house to smell like pickles, though, so you have to include other ingredients, like citrus or essential oils, to mask the scent.

How To Clean With Vinegar

There are many surfaces that are acceptable to clean with vinegar. There are also a few things that vinegar can damage because of the low pH that can dissolve certain substances. Although vinegar is technically viewed as a weak acid, it is powerful enough to damage certain surfaces. Avoid cleaning the following surfaces with vinegar:

 • Mold: Yes, vinegar does kill mold and you can use it for that; however, it may only scratch the surface of a larger problem. We will explain this in more detail a little later in the article.
 • Finished wood: Adding a little vinegar to a mop bucket may be acceptable on hardwood floors, but using too much, or using it on certain types of wood, can damage the finish. The same rule applies to furniture.
 • Tile grout: It is occasionally acceptable to use a diluted vinegar solution to keep sealed grout clean, but using too much vinegar too often can erode the grout.
 • Dishwashers and washing machines: This is controversial because a lot of people use vinegar to clean these appliances. Adding too much vinegar to these, or using it too often, can damage the rubber components over time.
 • Stone countertops: Vinegar can very easily damage marble, granite, and natural stone countertops.

Window And Mirror Cleaner

If you want some spot-free shine on your windows and mirrors, vinegar is a highly effective ingredient. Forget the glass cleaner spray and mix one part vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle. Add one or two drops of essential oil, such as lemongrass, and an optional 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap. Shake it up and use it to clean your windows, mirrors, and shower doors.

Mold Remover

As previously mentioned, vinegar can be used to treat mold in certain situations. If you notice mold in your house, though, that may just be the tip of the iceberg, indicating a potentially serious issue. If you want to use vinegar to help get rid of mold, mix one part borax with four parts white vinegar together in a spray bottle. Spray onto non-porous surfaces, wait about an hour, and wipe away. The mold should wipe right off in areas where mold is miniscule.

Toilet Cleaner

Vinegar is a great ingredient for breaking down minerals on hard surfaces. It is particularly effective when mixed with baking soda. Pour a little baking soda into the toilet and add one cup of vinegar, watch it bubble, scrub, and then admire the shine.

Cabinet Cleaner

If you have oil buildup, food spots, or minor stains on your cabinets, vinegar can effectively remove them. Mix one part vinegar with three parts water and scrub the dirty cabinet with a rage or sponge. The vinegar helps cut through any grease, which leaves your cabinets shiny and clean.

Hardwood Floor Cleaner

If you have hardwood floors in your house, you know that mopping and sweeping are par for the course. People have robot vacuums and such, but those aren’t as effective as a good old fashioned sweep and mop. It can be beneficial to mix 1/3 or 2/3 cup of white vinegar in one gallon of warm water to clean hardwood floors. Just be careful because vinegar can damage certain wood finishes, so check with the manufacturer before dumping vinegar on your floor.

All-Purpose Vinegar Spray

If you want an all-natural, all-purpose cleaning spray with vinegar, here is how to make it:

 • Add one part white vinegar and four parts water to a spray bottle.
 • Add about 10 to 20 drops of essential oil of your choice (citrus oils are great), and one teaspoon of natural dish soap.
 • Shake it up and use when ready.
 • This spray is great on high chair trays, baseboards, appliances, floors, walls, countertops (provided the surface), and sinks.

The post Unexpected Causes Of Summertime Rashes appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Summer is nearly here, and you are likely planning to spend more time outdoors. Perhaps you spend a day at the beach, lake, or pool, or maybe you go on a long hike. By spending so much time outside, you increase your exposure to sunlight, insects, and other things that can cause itchy or painful rashes. Sometimes, the cause of the rash may be a mystery, but this article intends to explain the unexpected causes of summer rashes

You can easily prevent sunburn by taking the proper precautions. How do you prevent rashes, though? From swimmer’s itch and hot tub rash to polymorphous light eruption, we give you the low-down on common yet surprising causes of rashes during summer.

Swimmer’s Itch

Swimmer’s itch differs from seabather’s eruption (covered later) because it occurs in areas not covered by swimwear. Microscopic parasites from infected snails that live in the shallow waters of lakes, streams, or the ocean can burrow in the skin. That causes an allergic reaction that looks like tiny red bumps or large welts. The parasites ultimately die in the skin because we are dead-end hosts, but the problem is that these bumps cause intense itching. Relieve the itch by taking an Epsom salt bath or a bath with ground oatmeal. You can also apply baking soda paste to the affected area to soothe the skin.

Heat Rash

Heat rash, or miliaria or prickly heat, occurs when sweat blocks the pores in your skin and starts to build up under the skin. This is a common problem in babies, but it can occur at any age, especially in hot and humid weather. Heat rash usually stings and itches, and you can identify it by small red bumps or clear blisters that break easily. You will see a rash in areas where you sweat more, for example, the armpits, elbows, and groin. Heat rash typically clears on its own, but you can ease itchiness by wearing loose-fitting clothing and cooling off the skin.

Margarita Dermatitis

Unfortunately, drinking this classic alcoholic beverage that is either frozen or on the rocks will not cause a skin condition. That said, a dribble of citrus juice on the skin, which has been exposed to the sun, can lead to a nasty burn. This burn is known as margarita dermatitis, or phytophotodermatitis. This happens when a photosensitizing compound (furocoumarin) in limes and other citrus fruits, parsley, dill, and celery becomes activated by UVA light. That reaction causes a burning rash that develops within hours.

It’s possible to develop blisters or red, itchy patches on the skin. Symptoms will be at their worst within two to three days. While the blisters heal, the skin may become darker, which can take months to go away. Just be careful when you handle citrus immediately after being in the sun.

Polymorphous Light Eruption

If you have a sensitivity to sunlight and expose your skin to UV rays in late spring and early summer, you may break out in itchy, hive-like bumps. This phenomenon is known as polymorphous light eruption (PLE). According to research, PLE affects 10% of the general population. Those affected most likely live in northern versus southern climates. Researchers note that PLE occurs about 75% of the time in females between ages 20 and 40. People with fairer skin are also more susceptible.

PLE is a hypersensitive reaction to the sun that will typically go away within 10 days. It usually only occurs once each season, when the weather warms up and the skin gets exposed to UV light. It tends to get better over the course of summer, but be careful on beach days or sunny vacations. If you want to relieve the itch, ask your healthcare professional about an anti-itch or antihistamine cream. Severe cases may call for a topical corticosteroid.

Seabather’s Eruption

If you notice a rash under your swimsuit after a dip in the ocean, you may have seabather’s eruption, or pica-pica (Spanish for “itchy itchy”) or sea lice. This usually occurs when tiny thimble jellyfish and sea anemones get trapped under your swimsuit. They release stinging cells that inject a toxin, which causes an allergic reaction in the skin. You may notice a prickly sensation while swimming, but you’ll notice a reaction within four to 24 hours. It will look like a patch of insect bites or hives under your swimsuit. Make sure to remove your swimsuit and shower immediately after a swim in the ocean. Rinse your suit thoroughly in hot water to remove any remaining organisms, and consider an antihistamine if you notice something.

Hot Tub Rash

About one to two days after you soak in water contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is found in the ground and water, you can develop a skin rash: hot tub folliculitis. This skin rash gets its name because it is more common in hot tubs. The reason for that is because hot water breaks down the chlorine that kills bacteria. The rash can also occur after swimming in a contaminated lake or pool. A hot tub rash is characterized by tiny millimeter-sized red bumps that are worse in areas that were covered by the swimsuit. You may notice itchy or tender pimples around hair follicles. The rash usually gets better on its own, but a doctor visit may be necessary if it doesn’t go away within a few days.

Is this dandelion pesto nature’s green powerhouse in sauce form? We’ll leave that for you to decide. What we can tell you is that this highly addictive sauces is crafted from dandelion greens, which bring a wild, bitter-green twist to a classic sauce. Forget the basil and cheese, because they aren’t needed here. It still contains pine nuts, lemon juice, olive oil, and other seasonings, but the dandelions require other ingredients to tame the subtle bitterness.

Often dismissed as pesky weeds, dandelions are rich in antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and K, and other minerals like calcium and iron. That makes this pesto a superfood sauce in disguise! Blended with heart-healthy olive oil, crunchy pine nuts, garlic, lemon juice, turmeric, nutritional yeast, and sea salt, this pesto strikes a great balance between bold, rustic flavors and bright citrusy tones. It’s a great sauce, whether you decide to pour it over zucchini noodles, use it as a dip, or pile it onto a tray of roasted veggies. It truly awakens the palate!

Best of all, it does not contain preservatives, dairy, and artificial additives, which are common ingredients in most store bought pesto sauces. This sauce is pure plant-powered goodness straight from the garden to your plate. Now, that does not mean you have to go foraging for dandelions, but they are a common weed that people discard. Just forage for flavor! Play it safe and buy dandelion greens from the grocery store, a move that will also ensure you have enough greens free of pests for the pesto.

Did you know that in Morocco fresh seasonal fruits are more commonly eaten than cooked desserts. That’s not a bad way to live! Fresh seasonal produce is not only more delicious than out of season produce, but it is also more nutrient-dense. Plus, eating fresh fruit will help reduce your intake of the excess calories, refined carbs, and sugars that are in traditional desserts. To get back to Morocco, though, this recipe is a traditional Moroccan dish that is very easy to make. It is a great combination of fresh citrus flavors with nutty pecans and aromatic cinnamon.

Because the ingredient list is so short, it is your job to procure the best and freshest oranges you can find. Depending on where you live, certain oranges may or may not be available. If possible, do your best to get Cara Cara oranges, which have a mildly pink flesh that is extra sweet. Tangelos, navel oranges, and blood oranges are also great options, provided they are available at your local grocery store. Blood oranges are incredibly striking and make for a visually appealing dish, but using other oranges will not make this dish taste worse or anything like that.

Now, the last important ingredient to be particular about is the cinnamon. Some people prefer cinnamon sold by specific brands, while others prefer specific types of cinnamon. For example, Vietnamese and Ceylon are two varieties of cinnamon that have a well-balanced and complex flavor. Penzeys makes a cinnamon blend of Ceylon, Vietnamese, Korintje, and China cinnamons. Together, those four cinnamons create a beautifully aromatic blend that perfectly complements the sweet and tangy oranges.

Do you want to uplift your mood and create a calm space without plaguing your home with chemical fragrances? You came to the right place! With each spritz of this body mist, you detect floral and citrus notes that refresh the senses. The aroma also helps bring about a little vibrance to your day. It’s truly invigorating, light, and perfect for almost any occasion.

The combination of jasmine essential oil and orange blossom essential oil is very balanced. It isn’t one of those mists that overwhelms the senses. It’s a little zesty yet subdued in the best way. The refreshing scent lingers in the air without overpowering the environment. And the best part is that it is so easy to make. We are going to ensure that you have the right instructions and information necessary to make this mist, which captures the essence of late spring/early summer.

Creating The Body Mist

Before you make the mist, you have to source your ingredients. When it comes to essential oils, try your best to choose high-quality options that are pure. Not only will these offer the most vibrant scents, but also the most aromatic health benefits. Although you can use regular water for the mist, we recommend that you use distilled water, as it helps maintain the spray’s purity. It also allows the natural oils to be more present and doesn’t interfere with any potential impurities. For the mist, you will need:

 • Jasmine essential oil
 • Orange blossom essential oil
 • Witch hazel
 • Distilled water

The Benefits Of Jasmine And Orange Blossom Essential Oils

Jasmine and orange blossom essential oils offer their own unique aromas and health benefits. Jasmine’s floral scent can help create a sense of tranquility, which is why aromatherapists use it to elevate mood and establish a calming space. Inhaling jasmine’s aroma may help alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety.

Orange blossom essential oil offers a zesty and cheerful fragrance, which complements jasmine’s scent in a harmonious way. Known to stimulate and refresh, orange blossom essential oil may help bring about feelings of positivity and joy. Together, jasmine and orange blossom create a balanced blend that can help promote emotional well-being. Use it throughout the day if necessary!

Before we provide the recipe, there is one thing to note about witch hazel. If you do not have it in your possession, you do not have to include it in the spray. Witch hazel helps the body mist last longer, though. It also acts as an astringent, exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, and can help maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Homemade Body Mist

Ingredients:

 • 8 ounces distilled water
 • 1 tablespoon witch hazel
 • 10 drops jasmine essential oil
 • 10 drops orange blossom essential oil

Instructions:

 • Get an eight-ounce spray bottle (ideally glass) and pour about seven ounces of distilled water into the bottle. Add the witch hazel and stir to combine.
 • You want to make sure that you leave enough room in the bottle because a small air gap can allow for proper mixing.
 • Add the essential oils, screw on the top, and shake well to combine.
 • Store the body mist in a cool, dark place because that will help maintain the fragrance and integrity of the spray.
