Hormones serve as chemical messengers that coordinate different functions within the body. There are several glands, organs, and tissues, which make up the endocrine system, that produce and release hormones. These hormones are vital for metabolism, growth, development, mood, and reproduction.

What Do Hormones Do?

These chemical messengers affect and manage hundreds of bodily processes, many of which involve a chain reaction of several hormones. A hormone acts on a part of the body if it fits, e.g. the cells in the target tissue have receptors that can receive messages from that hormone. A hormone is like a key and the cells in the target tissues act as the lock. If the hormone fits the receptor on the cell wall, it will act appropriately and work, delivering a message that causes the target site to carry out a specific action.

The body uses hormones for two types of communication. The first type is between two endocrine glands, where one gland releases a hormone, stimulating another gland to change the levels of hormones that it is releasing. For example, this communication exists between the pituitary gland and the thyroid gland. The pituitary gland releases thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which cues the thyroid to release its hormones that affect different bodily processes. The second type of communication is between the endocrine gland and a target organ. For example, the pancreas releases insulin, which acts on the muscles and liver to help produce glucose.

Several studies support the fact that promoting a healthy microbiome can have a positive impact on hormonal balance. Consuming probiotics and a plant-rich diet may improve the body’s regulation of ghrelin, cortisol, and insulin. Read on to learn about foods that may help restore hormone balance

Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds contain lignans, which are a type of phytoestrogen that can mimic estrogen in the body. Researchers have studied them for their potential ability to reduce estrogen levels, particularly in regards to menopause and menstrual cycle irregularities. Flaxseeds are naturally rich in fiber, which may further support hormone balance by promoting a healthier microbiome.

Leafy Greens

Swiss chard, kale, spinach, arugula, and other leafy greens contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support hormonal health. The antioxidants in leafy greens work to reduce inflammation and assist the body with hormone production. The iron content may also help prevent anemia, while the magnesium content may help the body regulate cortisol. That ultimately leads to a more balanced stress response.

Berries

Not only are berries low in sugar, but they also contain a lot of antioxidants, which can help fight inflammation, a factor that contributes to hormonal imbalance. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries may cause a slower and lower rise in blood sugar and insulin levels. Additionally, the fiber in berries helps maintain stable hormone levels by promoting optimal gut health.

Avocados

Praised for their monounsaturated fats, avocados are always welcomed in your diet. Those monounsaturated fats play a crucial role in hormone production, as they serve as the building blocks for hormone synthesis. Avocados are also rich in fiber and magnesium, two nutrients that may help regulate estrogen and cortisol, respectively.

Quinoa

Technically a seed but grouped with whole grains, quinoa is a great source of complete protein, meaning it means all essential amino acids that the body does not make on its own. Those essential amino acids are necessary for bodily functions, including hormone production. Additionally, the complex carbohydrates in quinoa help slow digestion and nutrient absorption, contributing to more stable blood sugar levels. That ultimately helps balance the body’s insulin response.

Lentils

Similar to other legumes, lentils are rich in fiber, which works to support balanced insulin levels and a healthy microbiome. Like quinoa, lentils are a great source of plant protein and have a low glycemic index, helping you maintain steady blood sugar. The B-vitamins and magnesium in lentils also support hormone production and function.

Seaweed

Kelp and nori are a couple examples of seaweed that you can eat and they have the potential to influence estradiol levels in the blood. They may also increase the excretion of hormone-related substances in the urine, which can help balance all estrogen types. By potentially regulating estrogen levels and positively impacting gut bacteria, seaweed may be a great option for hormone health.

Broccoli

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower are naturally rich in indole-3-carbinol. This compound supports the liver in metabolizing estrogen. Broccoli is also a great source of dietary fiber, which aids the regulation of insulin and other hormones.

It’s safe to say that Dherbs CEO A.D. Dolphin is no stranger to weight loss. He’s been referred to as “The King of Weight Loss” during his numerous appearances on Steve TV with Steve Harvey. With that title comes great responsibility, which is why he’s made it his mission to help Bigg Jah, Ryan Davis, and Onyika lose weight and transform their health and appearance as part of the ICAN Challenge.

What Is The ICAN Challenge

Now in its third season, the ICAN Challenge is Dolphin’s documentary series that follows two participants per season. For reference, season 1’s total weight loss came close to 300 pounds! It was one of Dolphin’s proudest moments in his career, primarily because it was the most intensive weight loss challenge he’s ever been a part of. The plan for the challenge was simple:

  • Use the Full Body Cleanse to help clean out participants’ bodies and get rid of that unwanted waste and weight.
  • Help them develop smart workout and eating habits.
  • Make sure they have the tools they need to emerge from this process and stick to a healthy lifestyle.

The Goal Of The ICAN Challenge

The primary goal is for people to change their lives for the better and emerge from the challenge more knowledgeable about food and exercise. With Dolphin’s assistance, contestants should leave the challenge and exercise the same way they did on the challenge, and eat better than they did prior to the challenge’s start. Naturally, it becomes more difficult to do that when you don’t have Dolphin watching your every move. Just to be clear, convenience is nobody’s friend! Losing weight is difficult, but the right plan makes anything possible.

Season 1: Standout Transformations

To say that we were more than shocked by the final reveals and weigh-ins during the finale of season 1 would be an understatement. Bigg Jah and Onyika put in the work and gave it their all to leave the challenge not looking anything like they did prior to the start. After six months of living with A.D. Dolphin, cleansing, and exercising regularly, Bigg Jah lost a total of 162 pounds, while Onyika lost 90 pounds. Both contestants were nearly in tears after seeing numbers on the scale that they hadn’t seen in many years.

Don’t just take our word for it, though. Feel free to watch their journeys by clicking here. All of the episodes are available on our YouTube channel. Both Onyika and Bigg Jah truly showed us that anything is possible!

Season 2: The Weight Loss Continues

The premise for the second season is the same, only it is half the amount of time as the first season. It follows Ryan Davis and Kim Kimble. Davis’ starting weight was 269 pounds and Kimble’s starting weight was 214 pounds. Tune in to follow their weight loss journey! You can stream all episodes now by clicking here.

For Dolphin, the ICAN Challenge is a pivotal moment in his career. Not only does it document the successes of the participants, but it also highlights the struggles and emotional toll that weight loss takes on people. It’s as emotional as it is uplifting and inspirational. In Dolphin’s words, “It is my goal to help people, and more importantly, give those following the journeys on the ICAN Challenge an insight into the world of cleansing. It is also my hope to inspire them, in hopes that they may change their lives in a more positive way after seeing the progress”

Weight loss is not linear and it is anything but easy. It looks different for every person, but each person has the ability and willpower to change for the positive. Subscribe to the Dherbs YouTube channel to catch a new episode every week. Thank you for the love and continued support.

During the summer months, it is easy to encounter several pests, including mosquitos and ticks. You can also get tangled up in some poison ivy while hiking if you are not careful. That should not scare you away from being outside and enjoying nature. Skin irritation happens no matter what you do or where you go. When something does happen, jewelweed salve may be the natural, folk remedy that helps your skin issues with ease.

What Is Jewelweed?

Jewelweed is a wild-growing plant that has helped soothe skin irritations for centuries. Some people have used it to calm eczema, while others apply it to keep bug bites from itching. The actual plant grows in shady areas across North America, but you can typically find it near water sources, such as creeks or streams in the forest. You can actually find it growing by its poisonous neighbor: poison ivy. The good news is that it has distinctive orange flowers and seed pods that explode (to a certain degree), making it fun to forage for.

According to researchers, jewelweed contains powerful natural compounds, especially lawsone. This molecule is believed to contend with urushiol, which is the rash-inducing oil in poison ivy. Some preliminary research shows that rubbing jewelweed on the skin after brushing up against poison ivy can stop the rash before it even starts. How amazing is that?! Lawsone can actually block urushiol, which reduces or prevents rash altogether. Jewelweed also contains saponins, which act like natural soap to help cleanse the skin.

Traditional And Modern Uses Of Jewelweed

Historically, Native American tribes mashed jewelweed plants to make a poultice to treat poison ivy rashes, cuts, burns, sprains, and insect bites. Modern research backs this up as well! Freshly mashed jewelweed is a popular remedy for stopping a poison ivy rash before it even starts. Jewelweed soap can also help reduce poison ivy rash if you use it right away after contact. In general, soap is efficient at breaking up the oils in poison ivy that cause rash.

Should you get into some poison ivy, your best bet at avoiding a rash is to use jewelweed right away. It is not always apparent that you have been in contact with poison ivy until it’s too late, especially if you do not know what poison ivy looks like. If that is the case, a DIY jewelweed salve can be a great alternative. Soothe or prevent a poison ivy rash with the following salve, which also works on bug bites and irritated skin.

DIY Jewelweed Salve

Ingredients:

  • Fresh jewelweed, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops tea tree oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions:

  • Place the jewelweed into a pint-size Mason jar. You want enough plant material to fill the jar up to the halfway point. Cover the jewelweed with olive oil.
  • Fill a saucepan about halfway with water and place a cotton towel at the bottom. Place the jar with the jewelweed and olive oil on top of the cloth, as that will prevent the jar from breaking.
  • Turn the heat to medium-low and bring the water to a simmer. Reduce the heat to a low simmer and keep in the water bath for about three hours. You can add more water if it evaporates.
  • Strain the jewelweed-infused oil through a cheesecloth, giving it a good squeeze to get as much infused oil out as possible.
  • Add one cup of the infused oil and the beeswax to the top of a double boiler and heat until the wax is melted. Stir to combine.
  • Remove from the heat and then stir in the essential oils and vitamin E oil. Pour the mixture into small tins or glass jars and allow the salve to harden at room temperature.
  • Use on poison ivy rash, mosquito bites, and eczema or irritated skin.
