Sometimes, you come across a salad recipe that is both incredibly flavorful and simple to make. Such is the case for this curried carrot salad, which features shredded crunchy carrots and a slightly bitter tahini curry dressing. To balance out the spice and bitterness, we added nutty raw pumpkin seeds and sweet raisins. Should you be a true raisin hater, you can omit the raisins and consider adding sliced grapes. Forego the grapes and raisins altogether if you enjoy a pronounced curry flavor!

The great thing about this salad is that it is a true salad for one. This salad will yield enough for you, and you alone. Make it as a filling lunch or as a side dish for your main course. Even if you dress the entire salad and don’t finish it, carrots are sturdy enough that the salad will still be good to enjoy the following day. It is crunchy, cool, creamy, a little spicy, and incredibly fragrant. The curry brings a unique element to the dressing that you don’t typically find in most dressings or sauces. There’s a warmth to the spice mixture, and yet it is also zesty.

Just so that we’re clear, there is a possibility that you might hate it or love it. The main takeaway is that you were brave enough to try it! Don’t ever stop trying new and exciting or exotic foods because you never know what your palate will enjoy. There are many familiar ingredients in this salad, so you get to mix the old with the new, especially if you aren’t familiar with curry spice. The ginger and lemon juice bring a slightly spice flare as well, but that sweet maple syrup balances everything out. We hope you love experimenting with these new flavors!

5 Health Benefits Of Turmeric https://www.dherbs.com/articles/5-health-benefits-of-turmeric/ Sun, 29 Oct 2023 09:11:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=166187

Move over, kale, and step aside, blueberries. Oh, spirulina, you can sit this one out as well. We don’t have anything against these powerful superfoods, but our attention is on a different superstar today: turmeric. This bold, spicy, and vibrantly orange spice exists in everything from expensive lattes to daily supplements.

Although the addition of turmeric to various foods may seem like a new trend, it has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. There have been many anecdotes about the healing properties of turmeric, but researchers have pinpointed certain health properties more recently. A lot of existing evidence focuses on turmeric’s primary compound, curcumin, because researchers believe it is responsible for turmeric’s many health benefits. If you want to spice up your life, continue reading to learn more about why you should add turmeric to your diet.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Inflammation is a natural immune response, but chronic inflammation can lead to serious health conditions. Some of these health conditions include arthritis, heart disease, certain cancers, and more. One of the most well-known health benefits of turmeric is that it works to reduce inflammation in the body. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, seems to block several inflammatory pathways in the body. According to researchers, this process may help reduce inflammation-related health conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

May Improve Brain Function

Several studies confirm that curcumin may help improve brain function in a number of ways. One study monitored individuals who took a curcumin supplement and they experienced improved memory and attention. A separate study found that people who ate curry on a regular basis had better cognitive function than people who didn’t. Turmeric is a very common ingredient in curry, which explains the study. Turmeric can also increase the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a growth hormone that plays a role in brain function and the development of new brain cells.

Reduced Risk Of Heart Disease

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. An average 17.9 million people die from cardiovascular diseases each year. Some studies found that regular consumption of turmeric may reduce the risk of heart disease. Researchers note that curcumin may improve the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels. Additionally, curcumin may lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the formation of blood clots, all of which contribute to better heart health.

Potential Anti-Cancer Effects

Many studies show that turmeric exhibits antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections. Other studies suggest that curcumin may exhibit anti-cancer activity, but more research is necessary in human studies to confirm this. As of now, researchers note that curcumin may inhibit the growth and spread of some cancer cells, and it may also promote the death of cancer cells. Although this is preliminary, turmeric may prevent angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels that contribute to the growth of tumors.

May Improve Digestion

For centuries, people have used turmeric as a digestive aid in traditional medicine. Studies have shown that turmeric can help improve digestion, reduce bloating and gas, and support overall gut health. Additionally, curcumin may help reduce gut inflammation, which not only improves gut microbiome, but also reduces the risk of gut-related diseases.

A good sauce or dressing can make or break a meal. That’s why we love this curry tahini dressing. Not only is it very easy to make, but it also exhibits an incredible tanginess with a hint of spice. This dressing goes great on salads, but it truly works with just about everything. You can even serve it as a dip for raw vegetables or your sweet potato fries.

The great thing about this dressing is that it only requires five ingredients, or six if you count water. When choosing the tahini, make sure that it is raw, not roasted. The ideal tahini has a luxurious, silky consistency because it will not clump when you blend the dressing. When it comes to the curry powder, you ideally want to choose a salt-free blend. Depending on your curry powder, it may or may not have the addition of salt for added flavor. Your curry powder should only consist of a blend of several spices, but read the label because each brand may include or exclude certain ingredients.

The lemon juice works to cut the nuttiness from the tahini and enhance the overall tang of the dressing. Because curry powder is very aromatic and floral, the dressing requires acidity, which the lemon provides. Lastly, the garlic adds a little zing that complements the lemon. Now, if you enjoy a sweeter dressing, feel free to add a teaspoon or two of grade A maple syrup. At this time, ready your ingredients and your blender because it’s time to make the curry tahini dressing!

Everyone is always on the lookout for a quick and flavorful dinner. Sure, there is something beautiful about spending hours and hours in the kitchen to create one magical dish. Unfortunately, time isn’t always on your side, especially if you have a family to feed. Nobody wants to start cooking at six only to eat close to ten-o’clock! That’s why we love this quick vegan chickpea and spinach curry.

Curry is a pretty loose term because colonizers used it to simplify what they saw in foreign countries. Today, people associate the word “curry” with a dish that has a spiced sauce and meat or vegetables. You typically eat it with flatbread like naan, or you accompany it with rice. Classic curry dishes that may ring a bell are tikka masala, masoor dal, vindaloo, butter chicken curry, etc. For this curry, you don’t need an entire spice cabinet, nor do you need a long list of meat and veggies.

This is a tomato-based curry, using canned crushed tomatoes to establish a luxurious creaminess and slightly acidic flavor. You tame the acidity of the tomatoes with the coconut milk, which you can always add more of if you need it. Because this curry contains green peas, chickpeas, and spinach, you don’t have to worry about being hungry after a bowl. It has incredible depth of flavor that we know you are going to love. In the picture, you’ll notice that rice is in the bowl, and you can either enjoy the curry with or without rice. Please make the rice according to the right measurements.
