Nobody wants to look at a picture of themselves and see a whole lot of yellowing their smile. At the same time, harsh whitening strips can irritate the gums and teeth, especially if you are more sensitive to those strips. You don’t have to carefully place whitening strips on your teeth now that you have this homemade toothpaste recipe that helps to whiten teeth. It contains activated charcoal, which is mildly abrasive and helps get you a brighter smile.

Avoid Harsh Teeth Whitening

If you want a gorgeous smile that’ll stand the test of time in family photos, chemical whiteners may not be your best bet. According to research, chemical whitening strips may cause gum irritation, tooth sensitivity, or permanent enamel damage. What’s even more interesting is that scientists don’t quite know how these strips work exactly, or the effects they have in the long run.

At-home whitening treatments tend to contain hydrogen peroxide, which helps remove stains or general discoloration. Hydrogen peroxide can be beneficial in certain situations, but it may not be the best ingredient for oral care. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching agents damage dentin, the tooth layer underneath enamel. If you have weaker teeth, you have a greater risk of developing tooth decay. Even though you see a product in stores, that doesn’t mean it is good for your health.

Whitening Teeth The Natural Way

There are many excellent toothpaste recipes that contain natural ingredients. Some companies offer great options in stores, but they can be quite expensive. If you are on a homemade kick and want to add more DIY recipes to your collection, this toothpaste is a great option. This whitening toothpaste contains beneficial ingredients and stays the same consistency at any temperature. The reason for that is because this recipe does not contain coconut oil, a popular ingredient in DIY oral care recipes. It contains MCT oil, which is derived from coconut oil, but stays liquid at different temperatures.

This natural toothpaste is not as sweet as the conventional toothpastes you’re familiar with, nor does it foam. It doesn’t contain baking soda, so it won’t be salty like other natural options. This recipe contains a small amount of essential oils for flavoring.

Essential Oils In Toothpaste

For the record, not every essential oil is safe to put in your mouth. Some are safe for adults and not for children. The quantity of the oil(s) you choose also plays a role. Cinnamon or peppermint essential oils are irritating and you should use these options sparingly, especially when compared to orange essential oil. Essential oils are completely optional for this homemade whitening toothpaste, but they can make it taste better. You may want to use grapefruit or lemon essential oil.

Before we get to the recipe, we must discuss activated charcoal. It is a great ingredient for whitening teeth because it helps remove surface stains. Incorporating it into a recipe is much better for your teeth because it isn’t as harsh as using it with water alone. Activated charcoal also helps to improve the pH level of your mouth, making it more alkaline to protect against cavities and gingivitis

Homemade Natural Whitening Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup calcium carbonate powder
  • 3 tablespoons xylitol powder
  • 1/4 cup MCT oil
  • 2 teaspoons activated charcoal powder
  • 20 drops essential oil of choice (optional and see above information)

Instructions:

  • Before you begin, make sure that the xylitol powder is finely ground and not coarse. If necessary, add it to a coffee grinder and blitz until very fine.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or squeeze tube and use as needed when you brush your teeth.
  • Store in a cool area and do not allow water to get into the jar or tube of toothpaste.

Dental experts agree that your gums should be a beautiful pink. This shade of pink might vary slightly depending on your natural skin tone, but if you notice a different hue, there might be something else going on in your mouth. As it turns out, the tone or tint of your gums can inform you of other health issues, especially if the change in color accompanies other symptoms. In this article, we cover a list of gum colors and what they could mean for your oral health.

What Color Are Healthy Gums?

Healthy gums are typically pink in color and firm to the touch. Your skin tone may determine the shade of pink. For example, white or light-skinned people tend to have lighter pink gums, while darker-skinned people can have darker pink or pinkish-brown gums. Your gums should be resilient and they shouldn’t move when you touch them or bleed when you brush or floss. Healthy gums are not inflamed or swollen in their natural state, nor are they tender to the touch. Your breath tends to feel fresh with no unpleasant tastes in your mouth. Continue reading to learn more about what your gums can tell you about your health.

Red Gums

Dentists say that red, swollen gums commonly indicate gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease. Plaque that builds up on the teeth causes gingivitis, and the tenderness of the gums can cause them to bleed when you floss. If you notice red, swollen gums, take action as soon as possible. Gingivitis can worsen over time and lead to gum pain, tenderness, and eventually gum damage or tooth loss.

Black Gums

Unless you decide to consume a handful of dirt, your gums should not be black. If you notice very dark red, dark purple, or black gums, you most likely have a case of periodontitis. This is a common gum infection that damages the gums and destroys the jawbone, but it is fairly preventable. In addition to the darker-colored gums, you may also notice new spaces between your teeth and a change to your bite. This occurs because teeth start to loosen. Two less common reasons for black gums are smoking or unmanaged diabetes. Tetracycline, an antibiotic, can also temporarily cause gums to take on a back hue.

Purple Gums

If gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, the more advanced form of gum disease, gums may take on a purplish appearance. Some dental experts suggest that gums with a subtle purple hue may not always indicate gum disease. The gums must be firm and healthy, not bleeding, for the purplish hue to be acceptable. If you notice purple gums that are puffy and painful, or that pus comes from between the teeth, see your dentist to address the problem. Eating or chewing may also become uncomfortable in this situation.

White Gums

If you notice that your gums have taken on a ghostly white appearance, the problem isn’t usually cause for major concern. Gums can turn white temporarily from excess use of teeth whitening products, according to experts. The chemical bleaching ingredients in these products can also cause gum and tooth sensitivity. Less often, white spots or patches on the gums can indicate leukoplakia, a condition that results from heavy smoking or tobacco use. In some cases, white patches on the gums may indicate oral cancer, but the patch typically feels sore or irritated in this situation.

Pale Gums

Gums that appear paler than normal may be a symptom of anemia, which occurs when the blood doesn’t make enough red blood cells. Anemia often stems from too-low iron or vitamin B12 levels, and it can cause weakness, pale skin, pale gums, dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. If you experience other symptoms of anemia, consider speaking with your healthcare professional to address the issue.

Having a bright, white smile only seems to matter as you get older. As a child, how often did you spend caring for your teeth and gums? What happens is that you end up making up for neglecting your teeth at an early age. While the most notable signs of aging are wrinkles around the eyes or fine lines on the forehead, your smile has the most dramatic changes as you age.

It may come as a surprise to you, but your pearly whites are the first things that start to show signs of aging. Yes, even before you notice smile lines or thinning hair! You use your mouth daily, from speaking and chewing to smiling and expressing. It sucks the life force out of your face when it comes to aging. That said, an aging smile is much more than a few discolored teeth or a couple lip lines. Tooth stains are visible, but you may not notice that your enamel weakens as you age. Additionally, it’s possible to have microfractures or chipping. For functional and aesthetic appearances, you want to keep your smile as healthy as possible as you get older. How do you do that? Follow the dentist-supported tips below.

Keep Up With Oral Hygiene

This is not groundbreaking news, but prioritizing oral hygiene can lead to stronger, healthier, whiter teeth down the road. A healthy smile is the ticket to a beautiful smile. What that means is that you should brush your teeth twice a day with an ultrasonic toothbrush for optimal cleaning. Flossing, tongue scraping, using a gentle mouthwash, and staying hydrated are habits that maintain a healthy oral microbiome. All of these oral hygiene practices help maintain whiter teeth. By strengthening the tooth’s natural enamel, you can help eliminate buff stains and prevent them from developing in the first place. Stronger teeth and gums means a healthier, shinier smile.

A quick note about mouthwash is that you don’t want to use it all the time. Traditional antiseptic mouthwash is antibacterial by nature, but that means they can wash away the healthy bacteria that inhabit your mouth. Just like your gut, your oral microbiome requires a balance of good and bad bacteria. For that reason, don’t frequently rinse with antiseptic mouthwashes. You can use them infrequently, or rinse with non-antiseptic mouthwashes more regularly.

Invest In A Mouthguard

One of the most common signs of an aging smile is gum recession. Gum lines can creep higher up on the teeth than they should, and this happens with general wear and tear. Some people are more prone to gum recession based on genetics, while others can cause gum recession from teeth grinding or brushing too vigorously. If you are not prone to genetic gum recession, you can engage in certain habits that help you avoid it. If you grind your teeth, especially during your sleep, a mouthguard can be very beneficial. Additionally, consider brushing with a soft toothbrush, and try not to brush too hard. Be careful when you brush because you don’t want to push up on the gum tissue.

Don’t Brush Right After Eating

Let’s say you eat a meal with a lot of garlic or onion. The first thing you want to do, especially if you plan on leaving the house, is to brush your teeth. You may even brush your teeth after drinking coffee to reduce coffee stains. Staining foods and beverages tend to be quite acidic, so brushing immediately after eating or drinking rubs that acidic material all over your teeth. Instead of brushing, rinse your mouth with plain water to help prevent staining.

Are you considering natural toothpaste recipes as alternatives to the commercial, store bought varieties? You are not alone if this is the case. A growing percentage of the population wants to use safer, chemical-free toothpastes as part of an oral hygiene routine. Although certain brands produce safer alternatives, they may still contain some chemicals.

Many people resort to homemade toothpastes because they don’t want to put chemicals like fluoride in their bodies. Other harmful chemicals that are beneficial to avoid include sweeteners and flavors, humectants like glycerol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triclosan. When making toothpaste, you have the power to control exactly what goes in the recipe. You are also able to customize the texture, abrasiveness, and flavor, and help reduce your own consumption of plastic packaging. The only real initial downside is that you have to purchase supplies and ingredients to start mixing your own toothpastes.

Are There Downsides To Using Homemade Toothpaste?

Some dentists argue that homemade toothpastes don’t have the ability to reduce cavities and address oral health conditions. Most ingredients benefit your teeth, but there are certain recipes that contain harmful ingredients. For example, it’s best to avoid any recipe that contains hydrogen peroxide or vinegar. These ingredients can break down tooth enamel and causes yellowing or gum problems. For people with sensitive gums or teeth, it may be best to avoid homemade toothpastes that contain baking soda, as it may be too abrasive. Alternatively, you can use a baking soda toothpaste infrequently and use one without it regularly.

No Fluoride

Homemade toothpaste does not contain fluoride, which has a proven ability to prevent cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA) only endorses toothpastes that contain fluoride, but not everyone wants to use this ingredient. The primary concern has to do with fluoride’s potential to cause fluorosis, which occurs when young children ingest excessive amounts of fluoride while enamel is forming. Dental fluorosis is only a cosmetic issues and doesn’t affect the overall health of your teeth. However, fluoride can be toxic if you ingest it in high concentrations. It’s truly a personal decision of whether or not you want to use toothpastes that contain it or not. If you don’t want to brush with fluoride or other chemicals, please review the following toothpaste recipes.

Bad breath plagues the masses, being one of the most common oral health problems. Some people are unaware of the foul odor that emits from their mouth. When people point it out, it’s very easy to lower self-esteem and confidence. The last thing you want is for someone to cringe when you open your mouth to speak to them, so if your breath is less than fresh, you need the cinnamon mouthwash in this article.

While bad breath typically results from an overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth, it can also occur because of poor digestive health. In fact, a common sign of poor digestive health is bad breath. A dietary change can help restore gut health, but this may not always get rid of bad breath. Sometimes, you need to combat the bacteria in the mouth, and that’s where mouthwashes come into play.

Are Mouthwashes Beneficial?

Believe it or not, people have been using mouthwash for thousands of years. According to historical records, people in China used saltwater rinses to combat gum disease over 4,000 years ago. The higher class citizens in Ancient Greece used salt and vinegar rinses to keep teeth clean. The mouth contains tons of bacteria, which is a good thing. Like your gut, however, there are good and bad bacteria present in the mouth.

Modern day antibacterial mouthwash kills both the good and bad bacteria, which can lead to hazardous bacteria takeover. Additionally, alcohol-based mouthwash can dry out tissues in the mouth, which can irritate mouth ulcers if you have them. If you use alcohol-based mouthwash and drink soda, coffee, tea, or red wine, you may find that your teeth stain more easily.

You need to maintain a regular flossing and brushing routine, in addition to using mouthwash, to keep teeth and gums fresh. Don’t think that mouthwash can take the place of flossing and brushing, which are two essential components of oral care.

Cinnamon

Historically, people chewed on cinnamon sticks to help maintain optimal oral health. There’s an essential oil in cinnamon that helps to kill bad breath. It does this by killing harmful bacteria in the mouth. Additionally, cinnamon has a potent aroma that works to cover up bad breath almost instantaneously. Cinnamon also contains antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties that help control tartar and prevent plaque formation.

Turmeric

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which exhibits anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Turmeric is a popular superfood, especially for those who want to reduce inflammation in the body. Newer studies found that it may even reduce the risk of periodontal disease and certain oral cancers. Turmeric has also been recognized as an effective, natural teeth whitener. The results may not be instantaneous, but continued use may yield whiter, healthier teeth.

DIY Cinnamon Mouthwash

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

Instructions:

  • Place a small saucepan over low eat and pour in the water.
  • Add the cinnamon and turmeric and mix well. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let this mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Pour the mixture into a jar and use as regular mouthwash.
  • After you brush your teeth at night, swish the mouthwash in your mouth and spit it out.

The DIY toothpaste game is tricky to understand. Making toothpaste involves more commitment than the average do-it-yourselfer is willing to put out. That’s perfectly fine! Avoid the struggle and whip up a batch of homemade tooth powder that will help improve gum health and naturally whiten your teeth.

People want their teeth to shine bright, but you have to use the right ingredients for that to happen. For the recipe in this article, we turn to ingredients with therapeutic benefits, as opposed to the chemical ingredients in commercial toothpastes. The only thing to keep in mind about this natural tooth powder is that you should not use it every single day, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gums. The ingredients can be abrasive and rough for some people.

Activated Charcoal

As many of you know, charcoal works to remove toxins from the body. The body doesn’t digest it; rather, it passes through the gastrointestinal tract, binding to toxins so they get eliminated via bowel movements. When it comes to oral care, charcoal helps to change the pH balance in your mouth. Several studies found it to be effective at preventing cavities and improving the oral health of people with tooth decay and gingivitis. The slightly abrasive texture scrubs away stains and works to naturally whiten your teeth.

Bentonite Clay

Similar to activated charcoal, the negatively charged bentonite clay molecules work to remove toxins, bacteria, and other impurities from the body. It also contains minerals that work to remineralize tooth enamel. Bacteria can attack the surface of your teeth and break down enamel. Well, bentonite clay helps to rebuild this enamel, preventing tooth decay. It also works to neutralize excess acid in the mouth, raising the pH of your mouth so that bacteria have a harder time surviving.

Baking Soda

If you have stains from years of coffee drinking, it’s time to call on baking soda to come save the day. Baking soda is both alkaline and salty, making it great for acid-based food stains. Any coffee, red wine, soda, or tea stain does not stand a chance against baking soda. One thing to keep in mind about baking soda is that it is abrasive and should not be used on your teeth daily for that reason.

Homemade Tooth Powder

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon activated charcoal
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon xylitol
  • 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add all the ingredients to a medium-sized mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Alternatively, you can add the ingredients to a food processor to get a perfectly even blend.
  • Transfer the powder to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.
  • When you are ready to use this powder, whet your toothpaste and dip it into the powder. Brush for two minutes and then rinse well.

Many people have turned to home remedies to naturally make their teeth whiter, brighter, and shinier. Through trial and error, you eventually find a few ingredients that work better than others. We don’t want you to experiment with everything under the sun, and that’s why we’ve done the legwork to provide you with a two-ingredient toothpaste that naturally whitens teeth.

According to a 2015 statistic, American adults spent over $11 billion on teeth whitening and over $1.4 billion on at-home whitening products. You don’t need to dump a huge portion of your savings on teeth whitening solutions or procedures if you use the right ingredients. Plus, many procedures and chemical whitening products bleach your teeth, which is of great concern to many people. You don’t want that, do you?

Why Do Teeth Start Yellowing?

Well, there isn’t a clear-cut answer to this because there are many contributing factors that make teeth lose their sparkle. Sometimes, teeth appear yellow because enamel begins to erode and reveal the dentin, a naturally yellow bony tissue underneath the enamel. Certain foods also contribute to the yellowing of teeth. Coffee, black tea, red wine, soda, chewing tobacco, and other foods can cause tooth discoloration, staining the enamel and leading to potential plaque build-up.

Coconut Oil For Healthy Teeth

Coconut oil is almost entirely comprised of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are more easily metabolized than long-chain fatty acids, which are found in most other foods. Roughly 50% of coconut oil is made up of lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that has been known to attack harmful bacteria in the mouth. In one study, people who started oil pulling with coconut oil helped to decrease plaque build-up and early signs of gingivitis. There was noticeable improvement seven days into the study, and there was a 68% decrease in plaque at the end of the 30-day study.

Baking Soda For Whiter Teeth

You can use baking soda a few different ways to help naturally whiten your teeth. Baking soda is considered a base, so it is often mixed with a more acidic component, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or sea salt. Acids, however, can eat away at the calcium in the teeth or irritate gums. Mixing baking soda with water or coconut oil helps create an alkaline environment in the mouth. Because baking soda is slightly abrasive, it helps to scrub away stains on the teeth, but it should not replace your regular brushing and flossing routine.

DIY Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • small container

Ingredients:

  • Combine the baking soda and coconut oil in a small mixing bowl and stir until it forms a paste.
  • Spoon this paste into a small airtight container to keep it fresh.
  • Apply a small amount to your toothbrush when ready to use and brush for two minutes. Rinse and floss to ensure your teeth are squeaky clean.
  • You can use this 3-4 times per week.

Have you ever started talking to someone and they quickly made a disgusting face? You begin to feel self-conscious about your breath because the quality of your breath can make or break any interaction. Frantically, you scurry around in search of anything that will turn your breath from bad to good. Help!!!

On National Fresh Breath Day, August 6th, we encourage everyone to up their oral hygiene routine. When was the last time you brushed? How long did you brush for? Do you floss regularly? How is your gut health? All of these are pertinent questions if the goal is to maintain a fresh and healthy mouth. As many dentists have warned, poor oral hygiene can result in cavities, plaque build-up, tooth decay, or gum disease, all of which can contribute to bad breath. However, bad breath can also be a side effect of certain medications or an unhealthy gut.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath, also referred to as halitosis, affects about 25% of the world’s population. Some people can have a combination of bacteria, which break down food in the mouth, and decaying food, creating a foul odor. People who eat poor diets comprised of a lot of processed foods, refined grains, meats, and sugar can accumulate waste in the digestive tract, causing bad breath. Other causes of bad breath include smoking cigarettes, dry mouth, kidney disease, gastro-esophageal reflex disorder (GERD), or periodontal disease.

Tips To Keep Your Breath Fresh

Floss

This is an obvious answer that nobody wants to hear. Flossing is laborious and irritating, but it’s necessary to keep your mouth healthy. In order to make yourself floss, you have to make it easy on yourself. Leave your floss in plain sight in the bathroom, as opposed to stowing it away in a drawer or behind something in the medicine cabinet. Seeing your floss will register that you need to make it a part of your oral hygiene routine.

Stay Hydrated

If you haven’t figured it out by now, staying hydrated is the answer to a lot of problems. When you drink water, you promote saliva production and saliva works to protect the mouth from germs that cause bad breath.

Eat Some Parsley

We cannot stress enough that parsley is not merely a garnish that goes on your plate. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of parsley can help to keep your mouth clean and fresh. Thoroughly chew your parsley by itself to naturally freshen your breath and promote saliva production. Celery also works to produce saliva!

People traditionally used sage to help relieve gastric pain, but it has also been used to stop bleeding or as a natural disinfectant. Like the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” there is a saying about sage that goes, “Who has sage in the garden does not need a doctor.” A sage plant in your garden works as a natural insect repellent, keeping your carrots, cabbage, strawberries, tomatoes, and marjoram fresh.

Dried sage leaves are fairly common and easy to obtain at. Purchase an entire dried sage bundle and keep it in your closet to keep it insect free. You can also use sage essential oil to make DIY cosmetic products. Sage leaves are commonly used in cooking and burning the dried leaves is a great way to make your house smell amazing.

To keep the gray away, you have to make a natural solution that you’ll rinse through your hair. First, put 3-4 tablespoons of crushed, soaked sage in a half liter of water. Let that sit for 8 hours and then strain the liquid into a large pitcher. Don’t throw that crushed sage away because you are going to boil it in another half liter of water. Leave it boiling for five minutes and then remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool. Strain the liquid into the pitcher with the other sage water.

How To Use

After washing your hair with a natural shampoo, rinse it with two cups of the sage solution. This will help restore your hair’s original color. If you have very dark or black hair, prepare the same solution, but use equal parts sage and black tea for best results. You can consume 1 cup of this mixture a day, or use 2 cups as a natural rinse.

To whiten your teeth, you can rub fresh sage leaves on your teeth. You can also rinse your mouth with lukewarm sage tea to help prevent cavities. Rinsing with sage tea also helps to naturally freshen your breath!

Don’t you wish you could use a whitening toothpaste that didn’t harm the body with harsh chemicals? The majority of commercial toothpastes, especially the varieties with whitening agents, are filled with an assortment of harmful ingredients. Xylitol (made from GMO corn), fluoride, glycerin, GMO soy lethicin, and sodium laurel sulfate can collectively have detrimental effects on organs, the brain, the reproductive system, and hormones.

One of the things that may leave people skeptical about this DIY toothpaste is the color. How can a black toothpaste help to naturally whiten your teeth? Don’t let the color steer you away because it is filled with some powerful ingredients that are superstars in the DIY health world. Let’s check them out below.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

One of primary oral health benefits of coconut oil is that it works to fight the Streptococcus mutans bacterium, which can cause cavities, gingivitis, or other oral health issues.

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal helps to promote great oral hygiene by balancing the pH levels in your mouth. It also helps to whiten your teeth, removing coffee, tea, or berry stains.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is like a sponge, in that it expands and alters its electrical charge to absorb toxins and heavy metals. In oral care products, bentonite clay helps to neutralize bad bacteria and deliver and array of minerals that help remineralize teeth.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted virgin organic coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons filtered water
  • 1 dropper full of liquid stevia
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon activated charcoal
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a glass container and mix well with a wooden or rubber spoon.
  • Store this in a cool, dark place.
  • When you are ready to use, place a small amount on your toothbrush and brush your teeth for about two minutes. Rinse and spit out the toothpaste.
  • Don’t use this toothpaste every day because it can be harsh on sensitive gums.
