The hibiscus is a colorful, flowering plant that is not only stunning to look at, but also valuable in the world of health and wellness. It can be made into teas, extracts, supplements, and more. You can even cook with the dried flower leaves, using them as a meat substitute. But we are not here to talk to you about the many uses of hibiscus today; rather, we come bearing an easy DIY facial scrub made with hibiscus powder, among other natural ingredients.

Why Should You Use Hibiscus?

Hibiscus grows in tropical and subtropical regions, including Mexico, Thailand, China, Nigeria, Sudan, and Hawaii. Native to Malaysia and India, hibiscus is naturally rich in bioactive compounds, which researchers attribute to the plant’s purported health benefits. For example, some of the reasons to use hibiscus include:

 • Anti-aging properties: Known for its ability to increase skin elasticity, hibiscus is sometimes referred to as “the botox plant.” Due to the vitamin C and antioxidant content, hibiscus works to firm and lift the skin, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
 • Rich in antioxidants: Hibiscus is particularly rich in anthocyanins, which work to fight free radicals and reduce the risk of oxidative stress. Some research shows that anthocyanins may also prevent premature aging
 • Anti-inflammatory: Hibiscus contains anti-inflammatory properties, which may help soothe irritated skin, making it an ideal ingredient for people with acne or sensitive skin.
 • Natural exfoliant: According to research, the natural acids in hibiscus, which include alpha-hydroxy acids, work to gently exfoliate the skin. They may also help remove dead skin cells and promote a brighter, even complexion.
 • Promotes collagen production: Due to the high vitamin C content, hibiscus helps support the production of collagen, which is necessary for maintaining the skin’s elasticity.
 • Hydrating: Researchers note that the mucilage content in hibiscus provides great hydration, which helps maintain optimal moisture levels. This leaves the skin feeling soft and supple.
 • Natural cleanser: As we previously mentioned, hibiscus is a natural exfoliant. It is also a great cleanser, working to break down and remove impurities, helping to detoxify the skin and clean out pores.

Pink Kaolin Clay

Yet another ingredient that works absolute wonders for your skin. Researchers note that pink kaolin clay’s gentle nature makes it optimal for softening the skin. It will help leave it soft and refreshed after every use. Similar to hibiscus, this clay helps exfoliate the skin on a mild level. It may assist with the removal of dead skin cells, resulting in a smoother, glowing complexion. Due to the natural soothing properties, pink kaolin clay is an ideal ingredient for those with sensitive or irritated skin. It may even work to reduce inflammation or redness.

Pink kaolin clay, while gentle, works to absorb excess oil from the skin. That makes this clay beneficial for people with oily or combination skin types. What’s more, it doesn’t strip the skin of its natural moisture. Finally, because it is rich in minerals like silica, pink kaolin clay helps nourish the skin and give it strength, which contributes to the skin’s vitality.

DIY Deep Cleansing Hibiscus Facial Scrub

Ingredients:

 • 3 tablespoons oats
 • 1/4 cup rose hips
 • 1/4 cup hibiscus powder
 • 3 tablespoon pink kaolin clay

Instructions:

 • Grind the oats into a very fine powder. You can use a food processor or immersion blender to do this. Repeat the process for the rose hips.
 • Add the ground oats and rose hips to a small mixing bowl with the hibiscus powder and pink kaolin clay. Mix well and then pour the mixture into a glass jar. Screw on the lid and store in a cool, dry place.
 • To use, slowly add water, one tablespoon at a time, to the powder mix and rub onto your face in circular motions for two minutes. Rinse with warm water and then pat your face dry. Do this two times per week.

The post Can Tart Cherry Juice Promote Better Sleep? appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

There is no shortage of sleep aids, be they natural or chemical. That doesn’t come as a surprise, especially when you consider that an estimated 50-70 million Americans experience sleep disorders. Restless leg syndrome, insomnia, and sleep apnea, among others, can make it difficult to fall or stay asleep. Some people don’t have a sleep disorder; rather, their lifestyle or dietary habits prevent them from shutting their eyes at bedtime with ease.

What Is Tart Cherry Juice?

Extracted from cherries from the Montmorency cherries, or sour cherries, tart cherry juice is a natural source of antioxidant compounds. According to recent medical research, tart cherries offer a list of potential health benefits. Some preliminary studies found that sour cherries may help improve exercise recovery and improve sleep. It may also reduce total inflammation in the body, although more research is still necessary on that.

How Can Tart Cherry Juice Promote Better Sleep?

Researchers believe that tart cherry juice is a safe and effective sleep aid. The theory behind this is that tart cherries contain the following sleep-inducing ingredients:

 • Tryptophan: This amino acid converts into serotonin and melatonin in the body. Both of those hormones can influence mood, behavior, and sleep cycles.
 • Melatonin: Tart cherry juice is naturally rich in melatonin, a hormone that the body naturally secretes. Researchers note that it regulates the body’s sleep cycles and many supplements that contain melatonin help increase the duration and quality of sleep.
 • Antioxidants: Naturally rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, tart cherry juice may help reduce muscle soreness or aches, which can make you more comfortable and relaxed during the night.

What Does The Research Say?

Up until this point, there have only been four studies that looked at tart cherry juice’s efficacy on improving sleep. Those four studies were:

 • In 2010, a study included 15 adults over the age of 65, all of whom had insomnia. They were asked to drink one cup of a tart cherry-apple juice blend or a placebo drink first thing every morning. They drank the same amount again one to two hours before bed. After two weeks, the participants who drank the tart cherry juice displayed slightly better sleep index and reduced insomnia symptoms.
 • A 2012 study included 20 volunteers, who either consumed a placebo or tart cherry juice concentrate for a week straight. Study authors noted that melatonin was significantly higher in the tart cherry juice group. Plus, they increased sleep duration and quality.
 • A two-week study from 2018 consisted of eight adults over age 50. Participants who drank 240 milliliters (ml) of tart cherry juice twice per day sleep more than participants who drank a placebo.
 • In 2022, study authors followed 19 elite female field hockey players for five days. They were separated into two groups, one of which consumed 200 ml of tart cherry juice in the morning and 200 ml in the evening. The other group consumed the same amount of a placebo. The group that consumed tart cherry juice experienced improved sleep quality.

How Much Should You Drink For Better Sleep?

If you are interested in experimenting with tart cherry juice for better sleep, you can start out with the doses from the aforementioned studies. Most of the referenced studies instructed participants to consume two eight-ounce servings of tart cherry juice per day. The participants drank one glass in the morning and one glass in the evening. When you buy tart cherry juice, make sure to get the one without added sugar. Consuming sugar before bedtime will interfere with sleep, rendering the cherry juice ineffective. If you want to try tart cherry juice in powder or pill form, you can take about 480 milligrams (mg) per day.

The last thing to remember is that most of the participants in the studies experienced improvements after supplementing with tart cherry juice for seven to 10 days. If you do not see results after two weeks, you can assume that tart cherry juice is not the right sleep aid for you.

A lot of people welcome the warm weather of spring, while others dread the pollen that also arrives. From one morning to the next, people wake up sneezing, develop runny noses, and have itchy eyes. To avoid these miserable allergy symptoms, many people reach for the allergy medication bottle. There is nothing wrong with allergy medication, but some people may prefer to experiment with natural remedies that don’t cause the same unwanted side effects that accompany certain medications.

If the immune system reacts to something, which may not bother other people, that indicates an allergic reaction. The most common culprits of allergic reactions include:

 • Pollen
 • Dust mites
 • Insect stings
 • Food
 • Medications
 • Pet dander
 • Mold spores

Although everyone many not experience the same allergy symptoms, the most common ones are:

 • Sneezing
 • Itching
 • Rashes
 • Swelling
 • Asthma
 • Runny nose
 • Dry eyes

Natural Remedies For Allergies

The best natural remedy for allergies, well, is to avoid allergens at all costs, but this isn’t always possible. Allergens, especially pollen, are difficult to avoid during the spring. If your symptoms to certain allergens are relatively mild, you may be able to fight them off with natural remedies. Experiment with the following remedies to see if they help your spring allergies

Clear The Air

Dust, dander, and pollen particles can trigger allergy symptoms, and filtering indoor air may help eliminate them from your home. Your best bet is to look for a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter because it can remove 99.97% of problematic airborne particles. Putting a HEPA filter in your bedroom can make a huge difference, especially if you have allergy attacks at night or early morning. Air conditioning may also help because it removes moisture from indoor air, which eliminates mildew growth.

Saline Nasal Rinse

According to a 2012 review of studies, saline nasal irrigation benefitted both children and adults with allergic rhinitis, or hay fever. Flushing the sinuses out with a neti pot or squeeze bottle can help wash away pollen, or other allergens, that may cause allergy symptoms. Studies show that a good saline nasal rinse can provide relief from both allergy symptoms and symptoms of the common cold.

Vitamins And Supplements

A healthy diet helps encourage optimal immune response, but some people require supplementation to meet daily nutritional requirements. That is where dietary supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, and herbs, come into play. These supplements may help limit inflammation that accompanies allergic reactions. According to health experts, the following supplements may encourage better immune function:

Acupuncture

Are you surprised to see acupuncture on this list? Don’t be! Historically, the practice of ancient needling boosted immune function and combatted hay fever. Additionally, a fair amount of research indicates the efficacy of acupuncture for treating symptoms of allergies and sinus disorders. In fact, a 2015 review of studies concluded that acupuncture demonstrated positive results for people with seasonal allergies

Use Essential Oils

If you have sinus issues, adding essential oils to a diffuser may help you breathe better, or at least limit the intensity of allergy symptoms. Many people benefit from using eucalyptus oil because it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Others find frankincense essential oil to provide protection against some allergy symptoms. One study found that frankincense essential oil helped fight against perennial allergic rhinitis. A 1998 study found that inhaling the aroma of peppermint essential oil had enough anti-inflammatory effects to reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma.

A leave-in conditioner is a hair care product that you use after washing your hair and before you style it. More often than not, you apply it to towel-dried hair. Unlike traditional conditioners, which are washed out during the shower, a leave-in conditioner remains in your hair post-shower. By leaving the conditioner in, not only does it add moisture to the hair, but it also protects it from damage and helps detangle strands.

Almost every hair type, be it curly, straight, color-treated, or natural, can benefit from a leave-in conditioner. You may find this leave-in conditioner especially useful if you deal with dry, damaged, or frizzy hair. A leave-in conditioner can also be helpful if you use heat-styling tools, such as straightening or curling irons.

How To Use A Leave-In Conditioner

After you finish shampooing your hair in the shower, towel dry your hair before applying the leave-in conditioner. It will replace the conditioner that you’d normally use in the shower. That said, you can use both a conditioner and a leave-in conditioner if your hair is particularly damaged or dry. Ideally, use it while your hair is still damp, and follow the steps below for best results:

 • After shampooing your hair in the shower, rinse thoroughly. At that point, you can use your regular conditioner if you want and then rinse out.
 • When you are done showering, gently pat your hair dry with a towel to remove excess water. Apply a small amount of the leave-in conditioner through your hair. You can start at the ends and work your way up to your scalp.
 • Brush your hair with a comb or brush (one that you are ok getting a little oily) and gently detangle your hair. Ideally, use a wide-toothed comb to help evenly distribute the conditioner throughout the hair strands. Allow the hair to dry, or you can style as needed.

Why Should You Use This Leave-In Conditioner?

Unlike a lot of other leave-in conditioners, this DIY version is oil-based. The oils in it are very hair-friendly, some might say the most hair-friendly. The oils make it easier to brush or comb the hair, but it can cause the hair to look slightly oily. If you have an issue with this appearance, use it while you are at home. Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients:

 • Argan Oil: Some people refer to this oil as “liquid gold,” primarily because it has been used for centuries in health and beauty applications. It can help moisturize the skin and hair, as it is rich in fatty acids, primarily oleic acid and linoleic acid. These healthy fats work to lubricate the hair shaft and help hair retain moisture. Due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, argan oil also encourages a healthier scalp
 • Jojoba Oil: This is the closest oil to sebum, which the body naturally produces. Because of that, jojoba oil doesn’t tend to make the skin or hair feel greasy after application. That makes jojoba oil a great choice for people with oily hair. It is quickly absorbed by the hair and skin, making it a popular addition to various skin and hair care products.

Those two oils are the base of this leave-in conditioner recipe. If you desire, you can add a little rosehip seed oil or pomegranate seed oil during the winter or early spring, while the weather is still dry. Additionally, you can swap out the essential oils, but both rosemary and lavender essential oil benefit the hair and scalp

DIY Leave-in Conditioner

Ingredients:

 • 1 tablespoon organic argan oil
 • 1 tablespoon organic jojoba oil
 • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
 • 5 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

 • Pour the argan and jojoba oils into a one-ounce glass dropper bottle. Add the essential oils and then screw on the cap.
 • Shake well to combine the ingredients and store in a cool, dark place until ready to use.
 • When ready to use, place a couple drops on your fingertips and run them midway through to the ends of your hair. Don’t add oils directly to the scalp, but you can massage the scalp after running fingers through your hair.

There are many things that you can do to improve self-care. Many people find that great forms of self-care include meditation, exercise, bubble baths, playing video games, reading, and more. However you engage in self-care is your prerogative, and we are all for it! It is an essential component to your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Creating your own cuticle salve with natural ingredients is a great way to enhance your self-care routine. The process of creating your own beauty or skin care products can be a relaxing experience in and of itself. Not only will this cuticle salve improve your overall nail health, but it may also leave your hands feeling soft and rejuvenated. Whip it up by completing a few simple steps and it’ll be ready in under an hour! It is great to use during dry weather.

How Shea Butter Helps Your Nails

Shea butter is full of essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E. All of these nutrients help provide hydration to dry and brittle cuticles, which can help prevent cracking and bleeding. Because shea butter has emollient properties, it helps to increase moisture levels in the skin. This ensures that your cuticles remain supple and soft. Shea butter also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe any irritation or redness around the cuticle. That makes shea butter especially beneficial for anyone with discomfort that stems from dryness.

Almond Oil For Your Nails

Similar to shea butter, almond oil also contains vitamin E, which works to promote the growth of healthy cuticles. At the same time, it may help prevent breakage of both your nails and cuticles. Some preliminary research suggests that almond oil may improve blood circulation to the nail area, which encourages faster regeneration and healing. Additionally, almond oil offers anti-inflammatory properties that may relieve redness or irritation. The nourishing properties in almond oil make cuticles easier to manage by softening them. Regular use of almond oil may contribute to stronger, healthier nails and reduce the likelihood of hangnails or other common cuticle problems.

Vitamin E Oil Supports The Cuticles

In addition to the vitamin E present in both shea butter and almond oil, we decided to add more to the cuticle salve with vitamin E oil. Just like your skin, your nails require moisture to remain healthy and strong. Vitamin E oil is incredibly hydrating and helps restore dry cuticles by enhancing moisture in the nail bed. In order to produce healthy nails, keratin dead cells have to receive a continued blood supply that is rich in vital nutrients. Vitamin E oil helps supply the blood with the right amount of nutrients necessary for healthy growth.

Beeswax Benefits Cuticles

Beeswax is a common ingredient in various beauty products, especially cuticle care products, lip balms, and other products that promise hydration. It can keep the nails and cuticles healthy by forming a protective barrier that prevents damage. Not only does this protective layer maintain hydration, but it also protects against the elements. Beeswax also works to keep the cuticles supple and healthy by providing hydration via the emollient properties.

Homemade Cuticle Salve

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 cup shea butter
 • 1/4 cup almond oil
 • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
 • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
 • 5-10 drops essential oil of choice (optional for fragrance)

Instructions:

 • Combine the shea butter, almond oil, and beeswax pellets in a microwave-safe container and microwave for about 45 to 60 seconds (or until everything is melted). Just make sure to monitor it closely so it doesn’t overheat.
 • Once the mixture is melted, remove the container from the microwave and stir with a wooden utensil. Add the vitamin E oil and optional essential oil and stir to combine.
 • Pour the mixture into a storage jar and allow it to cool completely at room temperature. This is a crucial step, as it solidifies into the salve, which you can apply easily.
 • Store the salve in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It can last for several months, but if it changes in scent or texture, go ahead and discard it.

Most chefs agree that spring is the season they most look forward to. Winter embraces root vegetables, hearty stews, and dense plates to warm the body. With warmer weather and the scent of blooming flowers in the air, springtime signals lighter, brighter, and more colorful fruits and vegetables.

Buying and cooking with seasonal produce ensures that your food offers the most flavor and freshness. If you buy seasonal produce from local grocery stores or farmer’s markets in your area, then you support the community. The great thing about conversing with farmers is that you can ask them about seasonal items you aren’t familiar with. They may give you helpful tips that lead to flavorful creations in your kitchen.

Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables is a great way to increase your nutritional intake. The transportation time and distance is much less, so the produce items don’t lose as many nutrients. Plucked from the plant and straight to the farmer’s market they go! Additionally, you add more variety to your diet by adjusting your grocery list to the season. You may even save money because you’re eating produce at its peak availability. Let’s explore some of the best fruits and vegetables to eat during spring

Leeks

Say hello to the onion’s sweeter, milder cousin: the mighty leek. Leeks are powerful sources of essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, K, and folate. They exhibit quercetin, an anti-inflammatory compound that promotes a healthy heart. You can braise or sauté leeks or incorporate them into stews, soups, stir-fries, and more. Some people even blend them into salad dressings!

Strawberries

Strawberries exhibit an impressive nutritional profile, boasting lots of folate, manganese, potassium, fiber, and antioxidants. One cup of strawberries provides 149% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C. The anthocyanins give strawberries their beautiful red hue, and these antioxidants help reduce free radical damage. Strawberries may also assist with blood sugar regulation during meals, which researchers attribute to their polyphenols. Eat them fresh, add them to smoothies, or throw them into desserts.

Mustard Greens

Mustard greens are the leaves from the mustard plant, which originated in the Himalayas over 5,000 years ago. They are rich in glucosinolates, compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. One cup of cooked mustard greens offers 500% of your RDI of vitamin K, and 175% of your RDI of vitamin A, and 60% of your RDI of vitamin C. They also contain fiber, folate, manganese, calcium, and potassium. Enjoy them in salads, soups, stir-fries, or even smoothies if you love green concoctions.

Mangos

Many people see mangos year round, so it may not seem like they have a season. During the spring, however, you’ll find the freshest and juiciest varieties. Their season lasts from March through June, and they tend to be popular in sorbets, salsas, smoothies, and fruit salads. Rich in folate, fiber, copper, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6, riboflavin, and more, there’s no reason not to eat mangos during the spring.

Asparagus

These beautiful green spears may make your pee smell, but they are some of the most nutritionally-dense things you can eat. One-half cup of cooked asparagus offers two-thirds of the RDI of vitamin K and one-third of your RDI of folate. Asparagus also offers lots of dietary fiber, B vitamins, vitamins A & C, and it even exhibits anti-cancer properties. You can roast, grill, sauté, steam, and puree asparagus, so that means that there’s no shortage of recipes!

Fava Beans

Fava beans are an ancient pea variety with a distinct nutty flavor and buttery texture. They exhibit an impressive amount of fiber, but they also contain folate, manganese, thiamine, copper, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Fresh fava beans require more preparation, as you have to shuck and peel them. Once you tackle that step, you can cook them and add them to salads, soups, risottos, or blend them into a puree.

Radishes

These beautiful red golf ball-looking cruciferous veggies have a spicy flavor that some people find off-putting. Others, however, find them incredibly addictive and love to add them to salads, tacos, and root vegetable purees. One cup of radishes supplies you with one-third of your RDI of vitamin C, but they also offer fiber, folate, potassium, and B vitamins. Radishes contain isothiocyanates, which have been studied for cancer prevention. They also contain an anti-fungal protein called RsAPF2, which may be effective at treating Candida albicans.

By now, it should not be a secret that diet influences many aspects of your health. From digestion and brain function to athletic performance and aging, the foods you eat either boost or take away from your health. In fact, science-backed evidence continues to prove this, especially in recent years. New research indicates that sugar may be a big contributing factor that accelerates cellular aging.

Not everyone is a big sugar consumer, but it lures in people with its sweet, addictive deliciousness every day. If donuts are out, it’s very difficult to resist grabbing one. You don’t want one. You’re full, actually, and yet you still reach into that box and allow the power of sugar to take over. Some people feel that way about saltier snacks, but many succumb to sugar’s addictive quality.

A new cutting-edge measure, known as the “epigenetic clock,” helps scientists better understand the link between added sugar consumption and how quickly cells age. Continue reading to learn more about that.

What Is An Epigenetic Clock?

Before delving into the definition, you must first understand that aging is characterized by different changes that occur at the cellular, sub-cellular, and nuclear levels. One of those levels is epigenetic aging. Scientists understand that epigenetic alterations affect aging. For this reason DNA methylation patterns have been used as a measure of biological age. This is currently referred to as an epigenetic clock

An epigenetic clock is essentially a biomarker of age, and various clocks continue to emerge. DNA PhenoAge, DNA GrimAge, and Horvath’s clock are just a few in existence. It’s not a science fiction gadget; rather, it is an advanced marker that helps scientists evaluate changes to DNA to estimate biological age. The study that detected how quickly sugar ages cells involved 342 women at midlife. Researchers collected DNA from saliva in order to measure their epigenetic age, in addition to analyzing participants’ diets.

The Findings

The researchers noted a measurable acceleration in biological aging for every gram of added sugar that participants consumed. Even the individuals who followed an otherwise healthy diet experienced this accelerated aging. That said, people who consumed nutrient-dense, low-sugar diets were linked to slower aging. Let’s examine the key takeaways from this research:

 1. Cut back on sugar and you may just turn back the hands of time. In fact, reducing your added sugar intake by just 10 grams per day could potentially reverse biological aging by up to 2.4 months.
 2. Stick to a nutrient-dense diet that focuses on foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E. Additionally, consume foods that contain magnesium and fiber, as all of these nutrients have been linked to a younger biological age.
 3. According to researchers, a Mediterranean-style diet is a smart choice to help slow cellular aging. Most blue zones, which are areas with a high concentration of centenarians, exist in the Mediterranean. The consensus is that these people consume a lot of foods rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

How Does Sugar Impact Your Health?

According to many studies, excess sugar consumption contributes to elevated inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. What does all of that mean for your cellular health? As you can imagine, it’s not good news. It’s perfectly fine if you decide to indulge in a sugary treat every so often and maintain a nutrient-dense diet the rest of the time. Consistent overconsumption, though, can take a toll on the body’s natural repair processes, which affects your epigenetic age.

Looking for simple ways to cut back on added sugars without surrendering flavor? There are a variety of sugar swaps that help you satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthier way. They are:

 • Opt for oatmeal topped with nut butter and fresh berries for a healthier, sweet breakfast treat. You can also enjoy a fruit and vegetable smoothie in place of sugary processed cereals. Chia pudding is another great option, especially if you need to take breakfast on the go.
 • Indulge in some antioxidant-rich dark chocolate instead of packaged candy bars. Aim for 70% cacao or higher in order to reap the health benefits.
 • It can be difficult to stop drinking soda, as it is highly addictive and overly sweet. Grab a sparkling water or healthy soda alternative instead of reaching for sugar-laden energy drinks or standard sodas.

The Takeaway

Sugar influences cellular health and longevity, as was proven clear during this recent study. If you shift your focus to consume less sugar and more antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory foods, then your body and health, including your biological clock, will benefit.

You have undoubtedly ordered, or at least heard of, an acai bowl. Although acai berries and bananas typically make up the base for these bowls, dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or strawberry pear, is another common base. Are pitaya and dragon fruit the same thing, though? We will cover all that and more in this article.

What Is Pitaya?

Pitaya, or dragon fruit, is a low-calorie tropical fruit that has a subtly sweet and somewhat neutral flavor. The fruit has a pink exterior with green leaves, but it can either have white or vibrantly pink flesh inside. The pink pitaya is slightly richer in flavor and nutrients and exhibits a flavor similar to that of an earthy watermelon, but the seeds give it the consistency of a kiwi.

First discovered in Central America hundreds of years ago, this vibrant, tropical fruit has expanded across the globe. According to historians, early missionaries brought pitaya to Asia, where it is commonly known as dragon fruit. It’s not just a pretty fruit, though. May Promote Gut Health

There are trillions of microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome. In various human and animal studies, imbalances in the gut have been linked to poor immune health and more serious problems, such as heart disease. Having a greater amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut positively impacts your overall health.

Pitaya is a natural source of prebiotics, which work to feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics, just like all fibers, are not broken down by the gut. The bacteria in the gut can’t digest them, so bacteria essentially use prebiotics as fuel for growth. Regular consumption of prebiotics and probiotics can help reduce the risk of gut disorders. That said, more research is necessary to determine the direct effects of pitaya on gut health.

Great Source Of Fiber

Fiber is best known for its role in digestion, but many research studies indicate that it may benefit heart function and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Some preliminary research found that diets rich in fiber may help ward off colon cancer, but more research is still necessary in this field. It should be noted that there are no direct studies linking the consumption of pitaya to any of the aforementioned conditions. One cup of pitaya provides 5.6 grams (g) of fiber, which fulfills about one-fifth of the recommended daily intake (RDI). Generally speaking, the average adult should consume 25 to 30 g of fiber per day from food, not supplements.

May Prevent Against Chronic Disease

According to various studies, pitaya contains powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Betacyanins are the antioxidants that give pitaya its beautiful pink exterior. Studies confirm that these antioxidants work to reduce oxidative stress, or damage to cells, caused by an overabundance of free radicals in the body. The body produces free radicals when it breaks down food, or when you expose yourself to radiation, environmental pollution, or cigarette smoke. A buildup of these free radicals can accelerate cell aging and increase the risk of health problems, such as heart disease, arthritis, or cancer.

The pink-fleshed pitaya contains phenolic compounds, which contribute to the taste, color, and health benefits. A 2021 report found that pitaya has the highest concentration of total polyphenols and antioxidant activity compared to white or yellow dragon fruits. Researchers believe that the microbiome shift caused by the prebiotics in pitaya may help reduce the risk of colon cancer. Protection against other types of cancer may be attributed to the presence of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other antioxidant compounds, but more research is necessary.

Encourages Healthy Blood Flow

By eating pitaya, you may help to improve overall blood flow throughout the body. It can’t be that simple, right? Not quite, unfortunately, but a small study of 18 younger, healthy people examined the effects of eating 24 g (just under an ounce) of pitaya powder daily, or a placebo. Researchers observed the outcomes that pitaya extract had on artery stiffness, blood pressure, and blood flow. All of these were measured one, two, three, and four hours after consumption, and after two weeks.

The researchers found that those who consumed pitaya extract showed significant improvements in blood flow two, three, and four hours post consumption compared to the placebo group. Those results remained consistent even after the two-week period. Finally, researchers attribute these benefits to betalain, the plant’s red pigment.

May Help Regulate Blood Sugar

Even though pitaya contains natural sugar, eating it could actually help control your blood sugar levels. Research indicates that the antioxidant compounds in pitaya may help regenerate beta cells in the pancreas. These beta cells make and secrete insulin and amylin, two hormones that help regulate blood sugar levels. The anti-inflammatory properties of pitaya may also play a role in this, as inflammation is a major risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.

A review from 2017 analyzed four previously published studies. The conclusion was that pitaya had a significant ability to help lower fasting blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes. Although these results were not observed in people with type 2 diabetes, blood sugar reduced significantly when people consumed larger portions of pitaya.

If you are familiar with the content we post, then you know we laugh at the idea of a salad being a simple side dish. We direct the spotlight on the salad, allowing it to take center stage as the main course. You just need to pack it with plenty of cruciferous and colorful vegetables, heart-healthy nuts, savory beans, avocados, berries, and, most importantly, an incredible dressing.

Make It Colorful

In order to make the perfect salad, you want to include as many nutrient-dense, filling ingredients as possible. If you can make it as colorful as possible, that is a bonus. The reason you want to include colorful foods, such as blueberries, purple cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, or bell peppers, is to diversify your antioxidant intake. This relates back to the concept of “eating the rainbow.” Eating this way not only ensures that you eat a wide range of fruits and vegetables, but also that you eat as many vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients as possible. Continue reading to learn about other tips to make a great post-holiday detox salad

Start With The Greens

Greens will form the base of your salad, but you don’t have to be traditional with your choice of leaves. Some people enjoy crispy romaine, while others prefer the diversity of spring mixed greens. Kale makes for an excellent salad base, so long as you remove the thick stems and chop it finely. Arugula is a great choice if you water a peppery base, and shredded Brussels sprouts or cabbage work well as bases for slaws. The point is that green vegetables are some of the healthiest foods on the planet! Some people abide by the phrase, “The more you eat green, the more you get lean.”

Don’t Be Afraid Of Onions

Onions, garlic, and other members of the allium family, exhibit unique flavor profiles. They have a strong bite, but a lot of health benefits come with that intensity. For example, onions exhibit impressive anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties because of their sulfide compounds. The same compounds that make your eyes tear up benefit your health! If you need to tame the intensity of onions, soak them in a little sea salt and lemon/lime juice. You can also crush up fresh garlic to incorporate into your salad dressing. Fun fact: crushing the garlic actually releases the health properties!

Bring Legumes To The Party

Legumes are naturally rich in fiber and protein, two things that help fill you up. When you add them to salads, they add a starchy creaminess that is very hard to replicate. In fact, you keep aiming for black beans, kidney beans, or garbanzo beans bite after bite! Most beans are naturally rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, in addition to resistant starch. Plus, several studies found that they exhibit anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dress For Success

Before you dig into your big bowl of greens, colorful vegetables and fruits, onions, and legumes, you need a proper dressing. You can go with a simple vinaigrette using olive oil, your favorite vinegar, and sea salt and pepper, or you can blend several ingredients into a dressing. If you prefer creamy dressings, consider blending avocado, cilantro, olive oil, lime juice, cumin, and salt and pepper. Once your dressing is ready to go, drizzle it over your salad, toss to coat all the ingredients, and serve. When ready to eat, you can top with some almonds, walnuts, cashews, or other nuts and seeds of your choice.

If we know one thing about winter, it is that the weather is colder and skin can dry out easily. The constant changing of environments does not do the skin any favors. Being bundled up outside in the cold and then going inside to the warm, dry heat is a recipe for dry skin. Fortunately, you can pamper your skin and bring it back to life with the homemade body butter in this article. It is filled with natural ingredients that help to leave the skin feeling soft, radiant, and supple.

What’s The Difference Between Body Butter And Lotion?

Both body lotions and body butters work to moisturize the skin below the neck. Each of these skin care products can help soften skin and minimize dryness, but they work differently. The primary difference between lotion and body butter is the texture. While lotion has a higher water content and more liquid consistency, body butter is thicker and creamier. Body butter also tends to have a higher concentration of heavy moisturizers, such as shea butter. Body lotion tends to be formulated with glycerin, or other lightweight hydrators.

Generally speaking, body butter is ideal for dry or rough skin. The ingredients work to replenish the skin’s natural oils and protect them from stressors that increase irritation or dryness. Below, we’ll detail two ingredients that make this body butter highly nourishing for the skin.

Shea Butter

Shea butter comes from the kernels of shea trees, which are native to sub-Saharan Africa. To this day, most shea butter still comes from this region. Shea butter helps promote hydration because it contains several types of fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. These work to improve the skin barrier and protect the skin from damaging environmental pollutants. Shea butter also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for nourishing inflamed or upset skin. Additionally, shea butter is thought to offer mild protection from the sun, although it is not a replacement for standard sunscreen.

Coconut Oil

Promoted for its ability to moisturize dry skin, coconut oil offers many compounds that help improve overall skin health. It exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties when applied topically. Studies have shown that it may help relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis or eczema, which can cause itchy rash. The anti-inflammatory properties work to improve skin barrier function and prevent moisture loss. And while coconut oil may not be able to remove stretch marks, it is possible that topical application may help reduce their appearance. More research is necessary on that topic, though.

Whipped Gingerbread Body Butter

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup raw shea butter
 • 1/2 cup coconut oil
 • 1/4 tsp gingerbread spice
 • 4 drops ginger essential oil
 • 4 drops cinnamon essential oil
 • 2 drops clove essential oil
 • 2 drops vanilla essential oil

Instructions:

 • Add the shea butter and coconut oil to a heat-safe bowl or measuring cup. Melt the two ingredients in the microwave for one minute.
 • Remove and stir well. If the shea butter and coconut oil are not fully melted, heat in the microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Remove and stir well again to combine.
 • Transfer the melted mixture to the bowl of a stand mixer and refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.
 • Remove from the refrigerator and use the stand mixer to whip the mixture on high for five minutes. Stop to scrape down the sides every minute and continue blending until you have a light, fluffy cream.
 • Add the gingerbread spice and essential oils and mix on low to incorporate. Spoon the mixture into a jar, cover, and store in the fridge. Use as needed.
