It’s safe to say that people are not afraid of putting oils on their skin anymore, and rightly so. That’s great, considering that beauty shelves used to be replete with oil-free ads. Applying oil to the skin is not a new practice; rather, many cultures have used oils to benefit the skin for centuries. Various oils exhibit skin-nourishing properties, but you do have to find the right oil for your skin type.

What Is A Carrier Oil?

A carrier oil is plant-based and tends to have a neutral or mild scent. You can use them on their own, or mix them with other oils, such as essential oils. The great thing about carrier oils is that they do not contain fillers or chemicals that you typically find in store bought skin care products. The main thing to keep in mind when buying these oils, though, is to make sure they are cold-pressed. That is the best method of extraction for preserving their health properties.

A carrier oil can help to naturally moisturize, protect, and improve the overall quality of the skin. Different carrier oils may benefit certain skin conditions, while others aim to rejuvenate and improve the skin’s appearance. Some can even help you balance oil production, offer anti-aging effects, and enhance the skin barrier. Below, you will find great carrier oils for different skin types.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is naturally rich in both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which help it function as a natural humectant. A humectant is a substance that attracts water, so it helps to hydrate the skin, nails, and even hair. Hemp seed oil is non comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores, and that makes it suitable for all skin types, including acne-prone or oily skin. The antioxidants in hemp seed oil work to reduce the signs of aging, while the anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated skin.

Sunflower Oil

Beauty experts note that sunflower oil is naturally balanced, meaning it is not too heavy or too light. Sunflower oil is widely available and works to promote skin hydration, protect the skin barrier, and reduce water loss. According to research, sunflower oil is naturally rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which is why it is a common ingredient in anti-aging skin care products. Several studies indicate that the anti-inflammatory properties in sunflower oil benefit people with eczema, or general redness or skin irritation. Use it as a post-shower body oil, an anti-aging mask, or after-sun nourishment.

Olive Oil

Rich in vitamins A and E, olive oil is a great carrier oil choice if you want to reduce premature signs of aging. Olive oil’s polyphenols, antioxidants, and immune enhancers make it great for skin protection. It works to fight the effects of sun damage and may even soothe inflammation. That said, do not use olive oil topically if you have a history of eczema or allergic contact dermatitis. It has been associated with worsening atopic dermatitis.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba plant, jojoba oil is one of the most common carrier oils in existence. It is beneficial for nearly all skin types and is rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, and nourishing fatty acids. Jojoba oil can help moisturize the skin without leaving a heavy residue behind. You can use jojoba oil if you have combination skin, dry skin, or oily skin because it mimics the skin’s natural oils. Jojoba oil is also a natural emollient, helping to maintain a protective skin barrier.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sure, almonds are a healthy, filling snack, but have you ever used sweet almond oil to nourish your skin? If you have very sensitive or dry skin, sweet almond oil will be a great moisturizing treat for your skin. It is replete with vitamin E, fatty acids, proteins, and various minerals, all of which encourage healthier skin. You can use sweet almond oil as a body oil, combining it with rose petals for an optimal floral scent and enhanced antioxidant activity.

Argan Oil

Great for the hair and skin, argan oil has been an effective moisturizer and cosmetic oil for centuries. Although evidence-based studies are lacking, argan oil has helped many people reduce premature signs of aging. Some research indicates that argan oil can restore some of the skin’s natural hydration and elasticity after menopause. Its anti-melanin action makes argan oil great for evening out skin tone. Argan oil also works to promote collagen production, replenish the skin with fatty acids, and treat acne.

Avocado Oil

As you know, avocados are naturally rich in fatty acids and beneficial nutrients. That makes avocado oil the perfect oil for moisturizing dry skin. Because it has vitamins A, D, and E, avocado oil helps support collagen production and fights signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Among other beneficial properties, avocado oil works to moisturize dry skin and fight free radicals, which contribute to early signs of aging.

Sea moss seems to be on everyone’s radar lately. It is a type of seaweed that exhibits potent nutritional benefits when consumed. Studies suggest that it also benefits your hair and skin when applied topically in the form of an oil. That’s why making your own sea moss oil can be an incredibly rewarding experience, primarily because you have complete control over its quality.

What Is Sea Moss Oil?

This is a natural cosmetic made from Irish sea moss, or Irish moss, and nutrient-dense oils. According to researchers, Irish sea moss exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating properties. Plus, it is rich in many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it great for the hair and skin

Making your own sea moss oil at home is quite easy, but you need to acquire some ingredients first. The primary ingredient is Irish sea moss, which is rich in carrageenan, a gelatinous substance that is commonly in commercial hair and skin care products. You need different oils to achieve the “oil” component of sea moss oil, though. For the most part, this recipe consists of different carrier oils and one essential oil (peppermint). The reason we chose peppermint essential oil is because it helps soothe inflammation, irritation, and itchiness on the skin and scalp. It may also relieve pruritus, a common skin infection that leads to rashes.

Skin Benefits

Sea moss oil contains essential fatty acids, including omega-3 fatty acids, that play an integral role in the overall health and appearance of your skin. Fatty acids work to nourish and hydrate the skin, in addition to reducing inflammation associated with eczema and acne. The various antioxidants in sea moss and the different carrier oils may also offer some protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays and damaging free radicals. Carrier oils like jojoba, olive, and sweet almond help lock moisture into the skin, which keeps it from drying out.

Hair Benefits

Sea moss oil is rich in vitamins A and C, both of which nourish the skin and may promote hair growth. While vitamin A helps encourage sebum production to moisturize the scalp, vitamin C strengthens hair follicles, which helps prevent split ends and breakage. Sea moss oil may also benefit those who suffer from dandruff or scalp psoriasis. The anti-inflammatory nature of the ingredients works to reduce scalp irritation, while simultaneously promoting healing.

How To Use Sea Moss Oil

Sea moss oil makes a great addition to your skin and hair care routine. Working to reduce inflammation, sea moss oil may improve skin elasticity and hydrate the skin. To use properly on the skin, place directly on your face or skin. You can also incorporate other natural ingredients like raw honey or aloe vera to create a nourishing face mask.

The anti-inflammatory properties in sea moss oil help to soothe an irritated scalp. The moisturizing properties in the oils help to keep the hair healthy from the roots to the ends. For optimal use, massage the sea moss oil into your scalp before you shampoo. Alternatively, add a few drops into your conditioner before you massage it into your hair and scalp. You can also add some sea moss oil to your bathwater, as it can help relax tired muscles after a long day, while simultaneously softening the skin.

DIY Sea Moss Oil

Ingredients:

 • Irish sea moss
 • 5 tablespoons apricot kernel seed oil
 • 5 tablespoons sweet almond oil
 • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
 • 2 tablespoons argan oil
 • 1 tablespoon olive oil
 • 1 teaspoon peppermint oil (optional for fragrance)

Instructions:

 • Wash the Irish sea moss to remove any debris or salt. Dry the sea moss and cut it into very fine pieces to place in a small jar.
 • Pour the carrier oils and optional peppermint oil into the jar. Screw on the lid and place the jar in a cool, dark place for at least two weeks. This will allow all of the oils to infuse with the sea moss properly.
 • After two weeks, strain the remaining solids through a cheesecloth and transfer the finished product to a glass jar with a dropper top. It is ready for use!

When the weather is cold and the air is dry, it is very common to experience dry, itchy skin. This is especially true if you run the heater in your house during the winter. Staying warm is essential, but transitioning from the cold, dry air outside to the warm, dry air inside contributes to itching and dryness. That’s why moisturizers are necessary, but using the right one will change how you feel in your own skin.

If you regularly moisturize, you probably know that you use more during the winter. Besides the outdoor and indoor air, the heavier clothing you wear in the winter can cause significant chafing. Maybe you reapply your moisturizer, only to feel dry again in an hour. Fortunately, there is a remedy in the form of the DIY body oil recipe in this article. Using a body oil in place of your typical lotion or moisturizer will help soothe dry or itchy skin and make your skin feel silky smooth. How does this DIY body oil do that? The ingredients nourish your skin and help it retain water, and you can learn more about how they do that below.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil differs from extra virgin coconut oil in that it goes through a process that makes it remain liquid at room temperature. Extra virgin coconut oil is usually solid at room temperature, unless it is in a warm environment. Fractionated coconut oil is made by separating different types of fats in regular coconut oil, and two medium-chain fatty acids remain. It is one of the most versatile carrier oils available and absorbs quickly into the skin. It helps to seal moisture into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil exhibits numerous health benefits for the hair and skin. It is especially beneficial for people with dry skin, itchy skin, eczema, or psoriasis. Derived from vitamin E, vitamin E oil can be applied directly to the skin or added to lotions, creams, or gels. It exhibits antioxidant properties that may fight inflammation and other properties that enhance moisture. Vitamin E oil is a common additive to moisturizers because it helps prevent dry, flaky skin. Some studies suggest that vitamin E oil provides temporary relief from itching caused by dry skin. Additionally, one study suggests that topical application of vitamin E oil may improve psoriasis symptoms.

Lavender Essential Oil

Dry skin can overproduce sebum, the skin’s natural oil, to compensate for the dryness. That can lead to clogged pores and blemishes. Lavender essential oil exhibits antibacterial properties that can help kill acne-causing bacteria that may inhabit your pores. It also works to moisturize the skin and is non-comedogenic for pores. It is also an anti-inflammatory superstar, working to soothe irritated or reddened skin from the sun.

Tea Tree Oil

Dry skin is no laughing matter and it can increase the risk of cracking, flaking, or even bleeding if you scratch too much. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe dry skin. The best way to enhance moisture with tea tree oil is to mix it with a carrier oil and then apply it to the skin. Tea tree oil is very potent, so don’t apply it directly to the skin, as that may cause further irritation.

DIY Body Oil With Lavender

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup fractionated coconut oil
 • 40 drops tea tree oil
 • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
 • 15 drops lavender essential oil
 • 8-ounce jar with lid

Instructions:

 • Pour the fractionated coconut oil into a mixing cup and then add the tea tree oil and vitamin E oil.
 • Finally, drop in the lavender essential oil and stir well to combine the oils. Pour this mixture into a clean eight-ounce jar and screw on the lid.
 • If you have a little left over, treat your skin well right away!
 • This is a wonderful body oil to use right after you shower. Make sure to shake up the oil before you massage it gently into the skin while your skin is still moist.

The post 5 Amazing Benefits Of Castor Oil For Your Hair appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Do you soak your hair in a vat of olive oil or coconut oil to encourage healthier hair? The world of natural beauty encourages the use of carrier oils on the hair and scalp to optimize hair health. Nowadays, there’s a new trending oil that may be a real game changer for hair growth. Long before castor oil use on hair was a modern social media trend, it was used in many Ayurvedic applications. Healers explained that it improved conditions of the body, from scalp to feet.

What Is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is made by pressing seeds from the Ricinus communis, which is primarily grown in India, South America, Africa, and China. The oil has a pale-yellow color, but sometimes it is almost colorless. Castor oil has a mild scent and is a common ingredient in natural, medicinal, household, and pharmaceutical applications. You can also see castor oil on the ingredient lists of many cosmetic and skin care products.

According to historians, the use of castor oil on hair dates back to 4000 BC in Ancient Egypt. Since then, researchers have found that castor oil may strengthen hair strands, promote hair growth, and nourish a dry scalp. Although the oil itself is not a miracle hair growth solution, it can create a healthier scalp, which makes way for better hair growth. Continue reading to learn how castor oil can benefit your hair and scalp.

Increases Absorption Of Other Products

Castor oil positively affects the scalp and may also enhance the absorption of other products. If you incorporate castor oil into your regular hair care regimen, your other products may penetrate the hair and scalp more effectively. Not only does that benefit your hair’s overall health and growth, but it also encourages healthy hair in the long run. Plus, increasing the absorption of other products may help reduce residue build-up on the scalp. As you know, residue makes hair growth much more difficult.

Exhibits Anti-fungal Properties

Poor scalp hygiene can often lead to itching and scalp infections that cause dandruff. Castor oil may be an effective treatment option for dandruff caused by eczema and seborrheic dermatitis. The reason for this is because castor oil helps reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. It also works to inhibit the growth of several bacterial and fungal infections that may ruin your scalp.

Nourishes Your Strands

Castor oil is unlike other oils in that it has a powerful mix of proteins, vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants. Most other carrier oils tend to be higher in fats, which can be too intense for certain hair types. Because of the nutritional profile, castor oil may help nourish the scalp and fragile hair follicles. At the same time, it may encourage healthier, faster hair growth. The ricinoleic acid in castor oil is an essential amino acid and natural emollient. This protein works to both moisturize and strengthen your hair strands, and may help add extra shine as well.

May Boost Hair Growth

If you have poor scalp hygiene or excess build-up on your scalp, you will have a difficult time growing new, healthy strands. Poor hydration and hygiene lead to dead hair follicles and dry scalp. If your scalp is dry, then you have to give it oil daily, while oily scalps may only need oil once or twice per week. Massaging castor oil into the scalp works to increase blood circulation, which may boost hair growth. For best results, apply warm oil and gently massage into the scalp.

Has Antimicrobial Properties

When it comes to scalp and hair care, you need ingredients that contain antimicrobial properties. Castor oil exhibits these properties, which may be useful in fighting off bacterial growth on the scalp. Fungal overgrowth can lead to hair-damaging scalp inflammation and castor oil may help with that.

]]>

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have upgraded their hand soap game. There are so many soaps on the markets, and the truth is that many of them are filled with harmful chemicals that are difficult to pronounce. Are there non-toxic hand soaps in stores? Some brands use reputable ingredients, but they may also use fragrances or other substances that can disrupt the skin barrier.

Unlike making body butters, lip balms, or bath bombs, making your own non-toxic soap is a very simple process. When you go to purchase ingredients for the soap, you will also need to acquire a soap dispenser. You can either purchase a foaming soap dispenser, or any old hand soap dispenser. If your old hand soap is running out, give it a good rinse, let it dry, and use that for this DIY hand soap

Castile Soap

Is castile strong enough to kill germs? The short answer is: no, but it is still effective. Rather than killing bacteria, castile soap, which is a surfactant, removes germs and bacteria (like dirt and grease) with the aid of running water. That makes castile soap an excellent ingredient for cleaning your hands. Liquid castile soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s, is free of synthetic ingredients or foaming agents. It is a blend of ethically sourced carrier oils and aromatic essential oils.

Dermatologists like to say that castile soap speaks the language of the skin. That means that it incorporates three essential moisturizing components: humectants, emollients, and occlusives, all of which benefit the skin.

Humectants

Humectants are substances that attract water from the air or from deeper layers of the skin. Coming in naturally derived, unchanged, or synthetic forms, humectants bind with water and break down dead skin cells. They typically break down those skin cells first, making it so your pores remain unclogged. Once humectants loosen dead skin cells, they draw moisture from the air or deeper layers of the skin.

Emollients

Emollients are ingredients in skin care products that help to relieve dryness or skin irritation. Skin care experts refer to emollients as skin barrier creams because they help form a protective film on the skin’s outer. Dermatologists usually recommend emollients for skin conditions that cause dryness, for example, eczema and psoriasis. Emollients attract moisture to the skin, help prevent moisture loss in the skin, and work to soften peeling or scaling skin. An emollient differs from a moisturizer because it works to soften the skin, whereas a moisturizer contains other ingredients that bring water into the skin.

Occlusives

Occlusives are moisturizing agents that help form a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. Typically, they are waxy or oily and almost act like plastic wrap for the skin. What we mean by this is that plastic wrap forms a barrier between food and the outside environment. Similarly, occlusives aim to prevent harmful pathogens or particles from entering the skin, while keeping the skin moist at the same time. They help protect against dehydration, infection, and environmental damage, making them a great addition to any skin care regimen.

DIY Non-Toxic Hand Soap

Ingredients:

 • 3/4 cup filtered water
 • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
 • 20 drops lemon essential oil
 • Soap dispenser

Instructions:

 • Pour the water into the soap dispenser, followed by the liquid castile soap.
 • Add 20 drops of lemon essential oil, which works to remove odors and provides a refreshing aroma.
 • Screw the top on the soap dispenser, shake well, and use when ready.

If you want to harness the healing power of plants, adding essential oils to your wellness routine is a great start. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts made by steaming or pressing plant parts to capture those unique compounds and scents. Besides the potent aromas from essential oils, the plant compounds in these oils offer unique health properties. However, if you want to reap those benefits, there are some tricks to using essential oils safely and effectively.

You can use various essential oils to address various ailments in the body. Some essential oils are great for your hair and skin, while others can help relieve muscle soreness, joint pain, or even ease depression. You don’t have to use essential oils topically, either. Adding them to a diffuser or a warm bath is a common practice in aromatherapy. The following tips will help you be safe with essential oils, all while reaping their health benefits.

Do Dilute Your Essential Oils

One of the most important rules of essential oil use is that you have to dilute them in a carrier oil prior to topical application. The vast majority of pure essential oils are too concentrated to apply directly to the skin. Some essential oils, such as tea tree, eucalyptus, or cinnamon bark, can cause serious irritation. Great carrier oils to use are sweet almond, jojoba, olive, grapeseed, or borage. The general rule of thumb is to mix 8-10 drops of an essential oil in one ounce of carrier oil.

Don’t Assume All Essential Oils Are Created Equally

Because essential oils aren’t regulated in the United States, their quality can vary. Some essential oils contain synthetic ingredients instead of 100% plant material. They may smell like the plant, but they don’t have the same beneficial compounds that are responsible for the health benefits you’re after. Even if the essential oil is made from plants, a few factors can impact quality. The use of pesticides, packaging and handling errors, and improper storage can affect quality. WATCH OUT FOR THE WORD “FRAGRANCE” ON LABELS! Always do your research to ensure the quality of the oils you choose to buy.

Do Store Them in A Cool, Dry Place

Like most natural beauty and healthcare products, essential oils have an expiration date. Most essential oils tend to last six months to a year, with citrus essential oils having the shortest shelf lives. Floral oils like chamomile and lavender, for example, have longer shelf lives. Heat exposure, however, will make the essential oils break down faster in sunlight, so store them in a cool, dry place to prolong their shelf life.

Don’t Use Certain Oils While Pregnant

Safety is always key when it comes to essential oils. Do not use certain essential oils topically while pregnant, especially during the first trimester. Several studies concluded that the following oils should be avoided in any form, whether topical, diffused, or in hydrotherapy, during pregnancy:

 • Basil essential oil
 • Cinnamon essential oil
 • Bitter almond essential oil
 • Sage essential oil
 • Cedarwood essential oil
 • Peppermint essential oil
 • Marjoram essential oil
 • Fennel essential oil
 • Juniper essential oil
 • Geranium essential oil
 • Clary sage essential oil
 • Wintergreen essential oil
 • Rosemary essential oil
 • Myrrh essential oil

Do A Patch Test Always

The limbic brain anchors past experiences with associated aromas. Although personal preferences vary, smelling an essential oil’s aroma can determine your affinity for it. A negative emotional reaction to a smell can hinder any possible therapeutic benefits. Applying essential oils topically, even diluted in a carrier oil, can still cause a reaction, which is why you should always do a patch test to determine sensitivity. After applying the oil, wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction or not.

Don’t Ingest Essential Oils

Do not ingest essential oils. Many essential oils are toxic when taken internally, and an attempt to ingest essential oils should only occur under the direct care and advice of a highly competent and experienced aromatherapist with medical training. Ingesting essential oils as you please can result in serious health problems.

This is because people have adopted healthier lifestyles and are more selective with their skin and hair care choices.

What Are Carrier Oils?

Carrier oils are plant-based oils derived from nuts, seeds, or kernels. They have little to no scent and they are generally used to dilute essential oils. The reason that you have to dilute essential oils in carrier oils is to make them safe for topical application. Applying essential oils directly to the skin can result in negative reactions like rash or inflammation. Carrier oils, as their name suggests, carry essential oils and other ingredients into the skin. That said, you can use them on their own, and some of them have beneficial properties for your skin and hair.

Whether you’re looking to nourish dry hair or boost hair growth, the following carrier oils can help you achieve those goals. You may already have some of these oils in your kitchen! Just keep in mind that it’s always best to use the highest quality oils when applying them to your hair, scalp, or body.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a thin carrier oil that’s slippery and easily absorbed by your hair or skin. It contains lots of omega chain fatty acids and vitamin E that help hydrate your hair by penetrating the cortex, which is the central main bulk of the hair. Because it is slick, it can cover the scalp in a thin blanket of sustenance, feeding your scalp to encourage cell production in hair follicles. Grapeseed oil is excellent if you suffer from regular flare ups of eczema or psoriasis on the scalp. Combine this oil with tea tree oil to help enhance the anti-inflammatory properties.

Argan Oil

It’s almost impossible to peruse the hair care aisle at a store without seeing argan oil on the ingredient lists for at least 40 different products. Argan oil exhibits powerful moisturizing properties because of the rich fatty acid content. The hair easily absorbs argan oil, which nourishes the cortex and fills in dry cracks with moisture. In fact, using a light layer of argan oil before heat styling can prevent cuticle damage that can result in dry or brittle hair. Argan oil can also strengthen the skin barrier and promote cell turnover, increasing the scalp’s ability to produce healthier hair cells.

Jojoba Oil

If you have a dry scalp, you may not be producing enough sebum. The best oil that mimics sebum is jojoba oil, but don’t apply a crazy amount or else your hair will be greasy. On a chemical level, jojoba oil is closer to wax than oil. This unique composition makes it one of the best carrier oils for the hair and scalp. Rich in vitamins B & E, zinc, copper, and healthy fats, jojoba oil nourishes your hair and promotes hydration. Jojoba oil acts similarly to conditioner, feeding your hair with beneficial nutrients and hydration, which may promote hair growth

Safflower Oil

Working to deeply penetrate the scalp, safflower oil delivers beneficial nutrients into the hair follicle, encouraging thickness and growth. Cold-pressed for safflower seeds, safflower oil is a lightweight, odorless oil with a rich nutritional profile. Safflower oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t clog your pores, and that’s why it is a common ingredient in beauty products. The linoleic content in safflower oil may help reduce dry or flaky skin, while the vitamin E works to prevent damage to delicate hair and scalps.

Tamanu Oil

Tamanu oil is a solid at room temperature, so you have to warm it up before you use it. Cultivated from the tamanu tree, native to East Africa, tamanu oil is a carrier oil that supports the body’s natural immune responses to skin conditions. It is naturally rich in anti-inflammatory properties that help encourage scar tissue formation. The skin can easily absorb tamanu oil, which is great news for your scalp. In fact, if you are trying to regrow hair and need an extra boost, try adding tamanu oil to your hair care routine.

Sweet Almond Oil

An excellent carrier oil for the hair and scalp, sweet almond oil is naturally rich in vitamins A, B, D, and E, all of which benefit hair growth. It also contains proteins and minerals like potassium, zinc, and magnesium. Magnesium actually promotes protein synthesis and regulates hair growth phases. Because it is lightweight and offers a soothing scent, sweet almond oil is an excellent choice for relaxing head massages.

Castor Oil

Castor oil works to nourish and moisturize the skin, helping to encourage hair growth. If you warm up castor oil and leave it on the scalp post application, it can penetrate different layers of the skin and hair. Warm castor oil can seep into the hair’s cortex and swell it with triglycerides to form a seal around the cuticle. That traps in nourishment and helps make your hair softer and shinier. Castor oil also contains ricinoleic acid, which feeds dormant hair follicles by enhancing blood flow and promoting hair cell production.

Carrier oils and essential oils are excellent ingredients that help strengthen nails and repair cracked cuticles. Olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E oil exhibit hydrating and strengthening properties, while essential oils are quite soothing and anti-fungal. Since cuticles are more susceptible to cracking during dry, winter weather, this DIY cuticle butter should come to your aid.

The primary issue, in regards to cracked or split cuticles, is a lack of moisture. That means that you have to supply the affected areas with ingredients that help to seal moisture into the skin. One of the easiest ways for the skin to absorb these ingredients is by applying a body butter to the area. The only difference between this cuticle butter and other body butters is that the ingredients cater to your nails and cuticles. We think that you’re going to like how it makes your cuticles look and feel!

Shea Butter

Beauty experts suggest rubbing rub shea butter into your cuticles and nail beds before you do any other nail maintenance. Allowing the shea butter to remain on your cuticles and nails promotes nourishment and hydration. Not only can shea butter strengthen your nails, but it may also heal damaged nail beds and cuticles. The best thing about shea butter is that it helps protect your cuticles from future damage.

Coconut Oil

If the body is in a state of dehydration, one of the most common signs is dry cuticles or flaky nails. Although applying coconut oil to your cuticles doesn’t equate to drinking lots of water, it does help hydrate and nourish your nails. If you cook with coconut oil, dip your nails in the oil for a little hit of hydration. Massage the oil into the dry areas for optimal nourishment.

Jojoba Oil

Experts say that jojoba oil may be one of the best oils to treat and soften your cuticles. Jojoba oil is seed-based and contains small molecules that are similar to human sebum, the skin’s naturally occurring oil. Because of that, jojoba oil is easily absorbed into the skin to provide natural moisture. Jojoba oil contains vitamins B & E, both of which help to repair damaged collagen inside nail beds, ultimately improving strength and promoting healthy nail growth

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil has a long history of use in strengthening brittle nails and hydrating chapped or dry skin. According to several studies, vitamin E oil exhibits anti-inflammatory effects that may help improve tissues involved in blood circulation. Researchers propose that the same properties that encourage this process may also be important for nail growth and healing.

Lavender Essential Oil

This versatile oil exhibits relaxing properties that help calm the mind and improve sleep. Lavender essential oil is also deeply hydrating and soothing, making it an excellent choice for dry or inflamed cuticles. It also works to strengthen and moisturize the nails and cuticles.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil has a long history of use in medicinal applications. According to several studies, frankincense essential oil’s antifungal properties can fight fungi that can slow down nail growth. Frankincense essential oil can also moisturize the cuticle and prevent peeling and dryness.

DIY Cuticle Butter

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 cup shea butter
 • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
 • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
 • 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil
 • 20 drops lavender essential oil
 • 20 drops frankincense essential oil

Instructions:

 • Make a makeshift double boiler by adding an inch or two of water into a pot over medium heat.
 • Place the shea butter and coconut oil in a heat-safe glass jar and place that into the pot.
 • When the water starts boiling, turn down the heat. Stir the shea butter mixture until melted.
 • Once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, and the two essential oils.
 • Pour the mixture into a heat-safe glass bowl and allow it to cool for an hour at room temperature. It should start to solidify.
 • Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to whip the mixture until it turns into a whipped butter consistency.
 • Spoon the whipped cuticle butter into little glass jars and screw on the top. Store in a cool, dry place. A little goes a long way with this recipe, so you should be good for quite a while!

The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) estimates that at least half of the 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis have it on their scalp. Different hair types or textures do not affect the formation of scalp psoriasis, so anyone can develop the condition. Symptoms may be mild to severe, including occasionally itchiness or more serious scaly patches of skin, also known as plaques.

Plaques appear red and silver on lighter skin, while they appear more purple or gray on darker skin. Scalp psoriasis can cause intense itching, inflammation, discomfort, and the desire to scratch incessantly. Over-scratching can lead to infection, or even hair loss in more serious cases. Although there are several ways to help manage the condition, there is no one-size-fits-all remedy for everyone. It’s often a process of trial and error for each person.

You don’t have to suffer if you have scalp psoriasis, as there are many home remedies that provide relief. There are also topical prescriptions or medicated shampoos for mild to moderate scalp psoriasis. If you prefer the natural route, though, several ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen work to thwart itchiness and flaking. Just remember that it’s best to check with your dermatologist before experimenting with any home remedy. The goal is to make sure that it’s safe for your skin. Once you determine if the following remedies are safe, give them a shot to see if they provide relief.

An Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar is a common ingredient that fights back against itchiness. The antibacterial properties may ease irritation and relieve itchy scalp. Potentially, apple cider vinegar may help remove psoriasis scales. In order to prepare an apple cider vinegar rinse, create a mixture of one to two parts water and one part vinegar. Apply this mixture to the scalp several times per week for 10 minutes at a time. Use a comb to gently remove scales and then shampoo and rinse. Important note: do not try this rinse if your scalp is bleeding or cracking.

Dead Sea Salts

The Dead Sea, which is a salt lake in Israel that borders Jordan to the east, is the lowest body of water of the Earth’s surface. At roughly 1,300 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea has a high degree of salinity, and the salts have rejuvenating properties for the skin. In fact, some say that the salts are legendarily therapeutic. A DIY treatment of Dead Sea salts with olive or coconut oil may help remove scalp psoriasis scales, or at least soothe itchiness. After creating a paste with Dead Sea or Epsom salts and the carrier oil, gently massage a small amount into the scalp, leave on for 10 minutes, and then rinse. Apply anywhere from once a day to once per week, depending on the severity of scalp psoriasis.

Olive Oil

Carrier oils like olive oil have numerous skin-enhancing properties. According to dermatologists, olive oil may help reduce flakiness, making it an excellent natural remedy for people with scalp psoriasis. All you have to do is massage one to two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil into the scalp. Depending on the severity of the condition, you can leave the oil on from 10 minutes to overnight. If you leave the olive oil in overnight, wear a shower cap to keep the pillowcase clean. Before you rinse, use a fine-toothed comb to gently remove loosened scales.

Coconut Oil

Sticking with carrier oils, coconut oil may be an excellent way to help manage scalp psoriasis. The healthy fats in coconut oil work to boost the overall health of the skin, in addition to relieving itchiness. Massage a few drops of coconut oil into the scalp, put on a shower cap, and let the oil remain on the scalp for 20 minutes. Once the time passes, rinse your hair and shampoo.

Tea Tree Oil

Many studies confirm the anti-fungal and antibacterial properties of tea tree oil, which is distilled from the leaves of the plant native to Australia. It may help to keep the scalp free of infection that commonly results from excess scratching. Because certain skin types are sensitive to tea tree oil, do a patch test on the forearm before you try it on the scalp. Always dilute tea tree oil in a carrier oil; one part tea tree oil to 10 parts carrier oil is a great ratio. Once you make this mixture, dip a cotton ball in it and use the cotton ball to dab the areas of scalp psoriasis. Leave the mixture on for five minutes before rinsing.
