Brushing your hair every day can help optimize growth potential. The brushing action helps to evenly distribute sebum across hair strands, instead of just leaving it on the scalp. That helps to naturally detangle the hair, while simultaneously flattening hair to keep it looking shiny and healthy. If you do not want your hair to look unkempt, brittle, or unhealthy, there are certain brushing tips to keep in mind. From changing the way you brush to changing the brush itself, the following brushing tips should help promote healthier hair

Always Brush From The Bottom To The Top

The common hair brushing technique is to start at the top of your scalp and brush all the way down to the bottom (tips) of your hair. When you work your way up the length of your hair, you actually smooth it out a lot more than brushing it the traditional way. When you brush your hair, make sure to either use a serum or detangling spray. Attempting to detangle your hair from the roots will put undue stress on your strands and contribute to breakage.

Clean Your Hair Brush Every Other Week

One of the hair brush’s jobs is to redistribute all of the natural oils on your scalp where your roots are to the rest of your hair. If your hair brush contains residue from bacteria, grime, and hair products, it can do more damage than good. Experts encourage you to clean your hair brush every other week, or more frequently, if your hair is long. Don’t know if your hair brush needs a good wash? Look at the tips of the bristles and see if products form on them. Before washing your hair brush, make sure to pull out all existing hair. Next, wash it with regular shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Dry the hair brush in the sun to prevent bacterial growth.

Get A Cushioned Brush If Your Hair Is Fine

If you have fine, fragile, or delicate hair, please understand that your hair requires more care than normal hair does. Avoid hair brushes with metal-tipped or pokey bristles because they can damage your scalp or tear your hair. If you have delicate hair, choose a hair brush that has balled or rounded tips. Need to check the quality of your hair brush? Run it over the inside of your hands to see how aggressive it is.

Brush Your Hair Before You Shampoo It

How is this even possible? Well, it may not be possible for certain hair types, particularly curly or very thick hair. If you can brush your hair before you shampoo it, though, you can help loosen product buildup or dirt on the scalp. That can make the shampooing process more effective, as it can wash away the dirt and buildup. Additionally, this process can help you avoid product or dirt getting stuck in knots or tangles.

Replace Your Brush Often

Cleaning your brush is great for hair hygiene, but you also have to get a new hair brush from time to time. It can be hard to bid farewell to a beloved brush, but, like most things in life, a brush has an expiration date. When you notice that the bristles fray and start falling off, get your wallet out and buy a new brush. A higher quality hair brush should last for two to three years before you have to toss it out and repeat the cycle again.

Choose The Right Brush To Prevent Static

Finding the right brush for your hair can prove difficult at times. Once you find the right brush, you’ll be able to save lots of time and money when you need new ones in the future. The shape, size, and type matters, but so does the cushion, bristles, and other features. Does your hair get charged up when you brush it? Consider using a brush that has negative ions. Choose a brush that has boar, wood, metal, or other natural bristles, and avoid using brushes with plastic bristles.

Don’t Over-brush Your Hair

Brushing is not a process that you rush. As much as you would like to get it over with, brushing is an action that requires care and attention. Brushing wet hair, even though it is easy to detangle, can cause it to break more easily. Avoid over-brushing as much as possible to minimize the stress you put on your hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or a hair brush that has natural, flexible bristles when you brush your hair, and glide it slowly through your hair without too much force.

If you are into the world of DIY beauty, then you are most likely familiar with rosemary oil for hair growth. Maybe this natural hair growth oil caught your attention and you want to give it a try but don’t know how to make it or what to do. It is true that rosemary oil benefits the hair, but how exactly does it contribute to regrowth and thicker hair? This article aims to highlight how to make and use rosemary oil.

Despite what the online videos say, rosemary oil for hair growth is not just another TikTok beauty trend. It is far from a new discovery, as rosemary oil is a popular hair growth remedy in many cultures around the world. That said, it is nice to see that the masses appreciate a natural way to encourage healthier hair and scalp.

How Does Rosemary Oil Helps With Hair Growth?

Rosemary is an herb that is popular both in beauty and culinary applications. It may help to reduce headaches, insomnia, and even depression. According to research, rosemary oil contains carnosic acid, which exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Due to the antioxidant activity, rosemary oil helps increase capillary perfusion (blood flow) to the scalp, which may encourage hair growth. In fact, the increase in capillary perfusion that results from rosemary oil application is similar to the action of minoxidil, a chemical treatment for hair growth.

What Do The Studies Say?

Although human studies are lacking, there are many existing animal studies about the effects of rosemary oil for hair growth. One study, for example, found that topical application of rosemary oil helped to improve hair growth on mice experiencing hair growth issues from testosterone treatment. An older study from 1989 found that a combination of essential oils improved hair growth when applied to the scalp on a daily basis. These oils included rosemary, thyme, lavender, and cedarwood, but the study didn’t isolate rosemary for its hair growth abilities.

A more recent study revealed some promising effects of rosemary oil on hair growth. The study focused on using rosemary oil to counteract male pattern baldness. Researchers compared the effects of using rosemary oil with minoxidil, an effective hair growth treatment. Patients in the study either received rosemary oil or minoxidil 2%, using each treatment for six months. At the end of the study, both the rosemary oil and minoxidil treatments proved effective for regrowing hair. Participants who used rosemary oil were less likely to experience itchy scalp than those using the minoxidil treatment.

Rosemary Hair Growth Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup cold-pressed castor oil
 • 1/2 cup fractionated coconut oil (or MCT oil)
 • 3/4 cup dried rosemary
 • 1 tsp vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • Pour the castor oil and fractionated coconut oil into a small stainless steel saucepan and then add the dried rosemary. Add the vitamin E oil and stir the mixture, ensuring that the rosemary is submerged in the oils.
 • Place the pot on the stove over medium-low heat and keep your thermometer handy. You want to infuse the benefits of rosemary into the oils without overheating them.
 • To keep the oils from scorching the rosemary, keep the rosemary oil below 230º F. As the oil begins to heat up, turn off the stove, give the oil a stir, and place a lid over the saucepan to retain the heat.
 • Allow the oil to infuse away from the heat until it cools. Repeat this process once the oil cools and then continue repeating for about four to six hours.
 • During the infusion process. The rosemary may turn bright golden yellow and become very fragrant.
 • Once you let the oil mixture cool for the last time, transfer it to a mason jar and seal it tightly. Place it in a cool, dark place and let it infuse for two weeks. Give the jar a light shake every few days or so.
 • At the end of the infusion process, strain the oil using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth so that you are just left with oil. Make sure you get every last drop! Transfer the oil mixture to a dropper bottle for controlled application. You can use it directly on the scalp or incorporate this into other recipes.

How To Use:

 • Apply the rosemary oil to your scalp and massage it using your fingertips. Work your way around your entire head, making sure to apply the rosemary oil to your hairline, temples, and any other areas of thinning hair.
 • After the massage, turn your head upside down and continue massaging to divert blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. You should feel your head start to tingle after the massage.
 • Leave the rosemary oil on for as long as you can allow and then wash your hair as normal.

Not getting those luxurious locks from your regular hair care routine? Struggling to find ways to increase hair growth and thickness? Not to be the bearers of bad news, but thickness tends to be determined by genetics, the thickness of hair follicles, and the number of follicles on the scalp. Although that may be the case, your diet plays an important role in the overall health of your hair and scalp, according to board-certified dermatologists.

Nutrients For Healthier Hair

Several studies show that omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most essential nutrients for hair health. Omega-3s may reduce hair loss and improve the overall texture of your hair. In addition to omega-3s, protein, iron, fiber, zinc vitamins A, B, C, D, and E help your hair grow, according to a 2017 report. Although large trials are lacking on which foods specifically influence hair growth, eating more of the aforementioned nutrients may support healthier hair. Health experts suggest that you eat more of the following foods to give your hair a helping hand.

Dark Green Vegetables

Broccoli, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are all examples of dark green vegetables. These foods are great sources of both iron and vitamin A. Iron boosts circulation and carries oxygen to your hair’s roots, encouraging faster and longer growth. Vitamin A plays an integral role in the production of natural oils that condition your hair and contribute to optimal shine and elasticity. A review from 2019 found that people assigned female at birth dealing with hair loss tend to be iron deficient

Legumes

Hair follicles are made up of proteins, so eating more foods that contain protein can help support hair growth. Legumes, such as chickpeas, black beans, lentils, kidney beans, and other legumes are great plant-based sources of protein. Besides the protein content, legumes contain other hair-promoting nutrients like zinc, iron, and B-vitamins

Seeds

Seeds tend to be excellent sources of biotin, omega-3s, protein, vitamin E, and zinc, all of which contribute to healthier hair. A study from 2009 concluded that oxidative stress may damage skin cells on the scalp and cause hair loss. Seeds are naturally rich in antioxidants, which fight oxidative stress, so researchers believe that they can reduce hair loss by protecting skin cells. Sunflower seeds, for example, happen to be a great source of vitamin E, which may protect the hair from environmental toxins. They also contain density-promoting omega-3s, which flax seeds also contain. The oils from seeds, such as flaxseed oil, can also provide these nutrients and help the body better absorb nutrients like vitamins A and E.

Nuts

Just like seeds, nuts are excellent sources of essential fatty acids, especially almonds, cashews, walnuts, and Brazil nuts. Additionally, nuts also provide minerals like zinc and selenium, which encourage healthy tissue development, especially on the scalp. Walnuts are especially great because they are some of the richest sources of omega-3s. You can also obtain these nutrients by consuming nut butters. Just make sure that these butters are free of added sugars, preservatives, and artificial flavors.

Orange Fruits And Vegetables

Vitamin A is truly the workhorse of dermatology, as it helps the scalp produce sebum, which are oily secretions that encourage hair growth. Orange fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, papaya, mangos, and butternut squash, are rich in beta-carotene, which is the precursor to vitamin A.

Whole Grains

Grains, including barley, oats, whole wheat, millet, and spelt provide necessary fiber, B-vitamins, iron, zinc, and silica. Health experts note that silica is “the beauty mineral.” Smaller studies indicate that silica helps deliver nutrients to the scalp, which encourages healthier, thicker hair growth.

A conditioner is an essential component of any hair care routine. It is a moisturizing agent that tends to contain cleansing ingredients that get rid of the oily elements of your hair. A great conditioner will also replenish the moisture lost during shampooing. Another major benefit of conditioning the hair is that it strengthens strands and gives them a protective coating, preventing breakage and encouraging hair growth.

The problem with a lot of store bought hair conditioners is that they contain ingredients that are unkind to your hair and scalp. The homemade conditioner in this article is free of silicones, alcohols, and other chemicals that can cause irritation, dryness, or damage to your hair and scalp. Fortunately for you, the ingredients in this homemade conditioner are optimal for hydration, cleansing, and nourishment. You can learn more about them below.

Coconut Oil

Offering many benefits for your hair, coconut oil may help relieve dandruff and restore shine and life to damaged hair. It is safe for most hair types and contains fatty acids that work to improve overall hair health. That is why coconut oil is a common ingredient in most shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products. A 2015 study found that coconut oil is very similar to natural hair proteins and has a unique ability to penetrate the hair shaft, which is the part that shows just above the scalp. By penetrating the hair, coconut oil works to reduce the amount of water absorbed into the hair, which ultimately limits everyday damage.

Avocado Oil

Pressed from the flesh of avocados, avocado oil is rich in healthy fats that are easily absorbed by the skin and hair. It is one of the healthiest cooking oils and one of the best carrier oils for beauty applications. Avocado oil is much lighter than other oils, meaning you can apply it to your hair and scalp without worrying about build up. It doesn’t weigh your hair down or clog pores. Due to the oleic acid and monounsaturated fat content, avocado oil easily penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize and strengthen the hair. Regular use can also encourage a healthier scalp, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is a classic culinary herb native to the Mediterranean region. Similar to oregano, peppermint, and cinnamon, rosemary is regularly found in essential oil form. Rosemary essential oil offers unique antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that nourish the hair and scalp. In recent years a lot of claims have been made that rosemary essential oil can promote hair growth. Historically, Mediterranean cultures used rosemary in hair rinses for hundreds of years to promote hair growth. Beyond hair growth, rosemary essential oil may help prevent premature graying and dandruff.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is great for migraine relief and promoting relaxation and healthy sleep. It also has a place in DIY beauty, working to enhance skin and hair health. The antimicrobial properties in lavender essential oil work to prevent bacteria and fungi from growing on the scalp, which is great if you’re prone to dandruff or itchy scalp. A 2016 animal study confirmed that lavender essential oil works to stimulate hair growth. It was applied to mice and their hair grew thicker and faster than normal.

4-Ingredients Homemade Conditioner

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup coconut oil
 • 1/3 cup avocado oil
 • 10-12 drops rosemary essential oil
 • 10-12 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

 • Combine all of the ingredients in the bowl of a hand or stand mixer.
 • Whip the ingredients for three to four minutes to thoroughly mix the ingredients together.
 • Transfer the whipped mixture into a glass jar or other container. Store in a cool, dark place.

To Use:

 • After shampooing your hair, work the natural conditioner through your hair, beginning at the ends and going up to the scalp.
 • Allow the conditioner to sit in your hair for two minutes before rinsing. Use this conditioner two to three times per week.

Everyone uses hair care products. The combination of shampoo, conditioner, treatments, gel, and more, in addition to pollution, sebum, dandruff and dust, can cause build-up on the scalp. If the hair follicles are clogged and cannot breathe, the scalp can become unhealthy and irritated. Just like the skin, the scalp requires exfoliation to remain healthy and encourage optimal hair growth.

When you regularly cleanse the scalp with an exfoliating scrub, you can help transform an itchy dry scalp into a nourished one. According to hair care experts, exfoliating the scalp can wake up the follicles, encouraging hair growth in the process. This is because the scalp requires stimulation and blood circulation, and massaging an exfoliating scrub into it can aid those two processes.

What Are The Benefits Of A Scalp Scrub?

If you have a dry scalp, which is fairly common, a scalp scrub may be very helpful. Tiny flakes that you see are dead skin cells, and an occasional scalp scrub may prevent them from accumulating. The scalp has a constant renewal process of skin cells, but using a scalp scrub can aid that natural process, especially if you regularly see those dry flakes on your shoulders or hair strands.

If you haven’t already noticed, dryness is the common theme here. If you notice larger, more oily and yellowish flakes, a scalp scrub will not fix the issue. In fact, you’ll need a dedicated anti-dandruff routine to solve the problem. If that isn’t your issue, massaging a scalp scrub into your head may improve hair growth. Research is limited on this subject; however, one study observed 340 people with androgenetic alopecia who massaged their scalps twice daily over the course of two months. Of the group that performed these massages, 69% reported that hair loss either stabilized or improved.

In a 2018 study, researchers proved the link between scalp health and hair growth/quality. The study found that scalp exfoliation increased hair fullness and reduced hair shedding, all while controlling scalp malassezia levels. Malassezia is a type of yeast that can damage hair follicles.

Are There Drawbacks To Scalp Scrubs?

The hair is in its most fragile state when wet. That reason is the primary drawback to scalp scrubs. You should use a scalp scrub mid-shower when your hair is wet. Massaging around the roots, especially if using physical exfoliation, creates a lot of friction around the hairs, which has the potential to induce damage. When the hair is damaged, you are more likely to experience breakage.

Some beauty experts suggest that a scalp scrub does not effectively remove product build-up on the scalp. This may have to do with the type of exfoliant you make the scalp scrub with, though. If you find that the scrub is irritating or too intense for your scalp, you can stop using it right away. Additionally, don’t exfoliate with a scalp scrub every day. Ideally, you should only exfoliate the scalp once or twice a week at most. Massage is perfectly fine, but exfoliating too often can cause other scalp health issues.

Deep Cleansing Sugar Scalp Scrub

Ingredients:

Instructions:

 • Add all of the ingredients to a bowl, stir to combine, and then transfer that mixture to a jar.
 • While in the shower, wet your hair and section it off for easy application. Take about one teaspoon or so of the scrub and gently massage it into your scalp.
 • Massage in a circular motion, making sure that you do not over-exfoliate. It’s very important to treat the scalp gently because too much exfoliation can cause irritation.
 • Rinse off the scrub after a minute or so and shampoo with a paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo.

Horstetail Hair Tonic

It’s important to note that a lot of the evidence surrounding horsetail and hair health is primarily anecdotal. Some scientific studies, however, indicate that horsetail may promote healthier hair because of the impact is has on collagen, the antioxidant properties, and the silicon content. A lot of horsetail advocates suggest that it has a positive impact on collagen and calcium, encouraging the appearance of healthy hair. In regards to the silicon content, a 2016 study found that daily doses of silicon over a nine-month period reduced hair breakage. The silica content in nettle works to boost blood flow to the scalp, which may encourage hair growth. Studies suggest that increasing circulation to the scalp helps deliver more nutrients, helping the scalp remain flake-free and increasing hair length and strength. • Let it sit in your hair for five to 10 minutes and then rinse.

Rosemary And Parsley Seed Hair Tonic

Rosemary is a fragrant herb that can help alleviate many scalp issues and promote healthy hair growth. Most of the research surrounding rosemary’s ability to improve hair growth is focused on rosemary essential oil. This oil is naturally rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may calm an irritated scalp. Several studies found that some of these antioxidants boost circulation to the scalp, which stimulates hair growth. Rosemary essential oil may also discourage hair loss, but more research is necessary. In regards to parsley seed, it is very high in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, and choline, iron, magnesium, calcium, and folate. Parsley may help prevent hair loss and decrease dandruff by reducing irritation on the scalp. The post The 5 Most Common Causes Of Frizzy Hair appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It isn’t out of the ordinary to see people with messy hairstyles. In fact, one could make the argument that unkempt hair is a trend. Could messy hair be the epitome of looking effortlessly attractive? That is a matter of personal preference and we can’t influence your decision. What we can do is endorse the fact that frizzy hair can be a bit much to handle.

Frizzy hair can be very annoying, but it isn’t something you should simply ignore or pass off as normal. Not everyone is aware of what causes frizzy hair, meaning most people are in the dark about the best ways to manage it. The best way to address a problem is by finding the root cause, otherwise you are simply putting a bandage on the situation in hopes that it resolves itself.

What Is Frizzy Hair?

What in the name of frizz is frizzy hair? Well, if you look at a single strand of hair, it may not look frizzy, but all of your hair combined may appear frizzy and unkempt. Why is this the case? According to hair experts, frizz doesn’t take over every single strand of hair. It is often caused by hair cuticle flare-ups, which causes hair to raise up and out. What you’re left with is a rough and frizzy surface texture that allows moisture to enter and swell the hair strands. Frizz is subjective and can look different on different hair types. That means that taming it and styling hair may require a different approach for everyone. This article, however, is focused on why hair starts to frizz, and you can read on to learn more about the causes.

Humidity

Going from the dry desert to a very humid area may cause your strands to frizz, especially if you aren’t used to styling your hair for different weather. A humid environment causes hair cuticles to absorb water, which swells up the hair. Moisture from the environment gets absorbed into the cortex (the long fibers at the core of each strand, and this is very problematic for curly or wavy hair. You cannot completely avoid humidity, but you can do your best to learn styling tips to manage frizz in humid environments.

Harsh Hair Care Products

The natural oils that exist on your hair smooth it out and may prevent your hair from frizzing. Harsh hair care products actually strip your hair of its natural oils. Some of these harsh hair care products include perms, hair dyes, products containing sulfates, and products that contain alcohol. Bleaching, coloring, or excessive lightening with formulas that are too strong, or contain ammonia contents, can damage your hair’s surface. These products can make your hair feel rough to the touch, robbing it of natural shine and creative frizz.

Friction From Towels Or Pillowcases

Do you wake up with frizzy hair? The material of your pillowcase may be the culprit. Rough fabrics can actually cause your hair to frizz up, as is true for drying your hair with harsh towels. Hair stylists use silk pillowcases and microfiber hair towels to help mitigate friction, which is the big culprit for frizz for people with wavy or curly hair.

You Have It Naturally

Natural frizz is a real thing, as some hair types are just more prone to frizz than others. Natural waves and curls have a certain degree of frizz because hair strands bend and twist in natural ways. Because of that, cuticles may not lie as flat, which makes it harder to keep the frizz down. Although strands of these hair types may be more susceptible to frizz, they don’t have to remain frizzy. There are many natural frizz remedies that can help tame the mane. You may find that leave-in conditioning products are highly beneficial at fighting the frizz.

Heat Damage

Let’s say that your hair gets frizzy despite the climate, your use of anti-frizz products, or the right styling method. Heat damage is most likely the reason behind your frizz, especially if you notice frizz in the areas you iron or blow dry the most. For example, if you regularly straighten your bangs and you notice that they frizz up, then heat damage is the culprit. Heat styling isn’t necessarily off limits, but frizz is an indication that you may be going overboard, so just keep that in mind.

It’s safe to say that some people got lazy with hair care during the pandemic. Some people went the opposite direction and began soaking their hair in olive oil, or coconut-based hair masks, embracing the DIY lifestyle. Caring for your hair can feel like a chore at times, but it is a job worth doing to encourage long, healthy locks and a nourished scalp.

Protecting the hair is especially important for those who use heat-styling tools like flat irons or blow dryers. Some of these tools don’t always allow for temperature control, while others do and can reach temperatures of more than 400º F. The hotter the temperature, the better the styling, right? Wrong. Exposing your hair to high heat changes the shape of the keratin strands in your hair. Research states that temperatures exceeding 300º F convert alpha-keratin to beta-keratin, which contributes to weaker hair that loses elasticity. Melting the keratin in your hair causes your hair to maintain that shape on a molecular level, and it’s not reversible.

Damaged hair lacks moisture because heat strips hair of its natural oils. Higher temperatures evaporate the water molecules in the hair, which changes the protein structure and makes hair dry up quickly. Fortunately, you can protect hair from heat tools by using a DIY protectant spray with natural ingredients.

Almond Oil

The hair and scalp easily absorb almond oil, making it an excellent ingredient for all your hair care needs. Because the hair absorbs it quickly, it won’t weigh your hair down. It uniquely nourishes the hair because it has a high composition of vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, E, and D. Together, these nutrients work to fill in any gaps that exist within the structure of your hair strands. That helps the hair become more resilient, stronger, and beautiful. The only thing to keep in mind is that whether or not you have a nut allergy because you don’t want to have an allergic reaction.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has a low smoke point of 350º F, which makes it an excellent option for finer hair. If you apply coconut oil to your hair as a base protectant, don’t exceed 325º F with whichever heat tool you use. Coconut oil has the ability to both condition and act as a sealant, repairing existing damage within the hair. By penetrating the hair shaft instead of simply coating it, coconut oil works to smooth out hair and keep frizz or flyaways at bay. Not only does it make your hair look much healthier, but it keeps your hair looking and feeling softer.

Essential Oils

You can add some essential oils to the heat protectant spray to give it a signature scent. Essential oils offer protection to your hair, in addition to promoting growth and a healthier scalp. Great blends include lavender and rosemary or peppermint, tea tree, and lemongrass. Just keep the drop count to about 10 drops for whichever oil or blend of oils you use.

DIY Heat Protectant Spray

Ingredients:

 • 1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil
 • 2 teaspoons almond oil
 • 2 teaspoons conditioner of choice
 • 1 cup distilled water
 • 10 drops essential oils of your choice
 • Spray bottle
 • Funnel

Instructions:

 • Melt the coconut oil and allow it to cool slightly before you pour it into a spray bottle.
 • Add the remaining ingredients to the same spray bottle, screw on the top, and shake well to combine the ingredients. Shake before each use.
 • Spray on damp hair before blow-drying. Mist your hair lightly a second time before you use a heat styling tool.
 • The protectant spray lasts anywhere from one to three months depending on how you store it. Storying it in the refrigerator will extend the shelf life, but the oil will have to melt in order to use it.

Have you noticed a change in the feel or dryness of your hair? If you have not changed your hair care routine or the products in it, it’s possible that the culprit is the water in your shower. How is this possible? Well, it’s very common for people to experience thinning or brittle hair on the crown of the skull as a result of hard water.

Water beats down on the crown of the head every time you are in the shower, making hair prone to breakage. Both water pressure and hardness can influence the state of your hair. As lovely as it may seem, a jet-like stream that shoots at the scalp can result in dryness and hair breakage. Hard pressure is great on your tense shoulders, but it’s not intended for a sensitive area like your scalp. Although pressure does contribute to the health of your hair, the hardness of water seems to play a larger role than you think.

What Is Hard Water?

Hard water is water that has a high mineral content. It tends to be higher in calcium, magnesium, and trace amounts of other minerals. These minerals accumulate in the water cycle, and it can happen with well water or city water. The more calcium and magnesium that dissolve in the water, the harder it becomes. Hard water can leave ugly stains on sinks and tubs and can cause higher water bills, as water appliances have to work harder. If your water is hard, you may notice or feel like a film of residue is left on your skin after using soap. Soap reacts with the calcium in the water and forms soap scum, i.e. the film that you notice.

How Does Hard Water Affect Hair?

Hard water won’t kill you, but it can negatively affect the hair and skin. According to a 2016 study, female participants found that hard water damaged hair. The study monitored women who washed hair samples in both hard water and distilled water for 30 days. At the end of the study, hair washed in hard water decreased in thickness and had a ruffled appearance. Additional symptoms included tangles, breakage, dryness, dullness, and frizziness.

The higher magnesium and calcium content in hard water can change the skin’s pH balance. This can ultimately alter the skin’s microbiome, which prefers a more acidic pH of about 5.0. Hard water tends to dry out the skin and make it more sensitive, and drying out the scalp can decrease the health of your hair. The damage may not seem like a big deal straight away, but hard water can have long-term effects, affecting hair’s appearance and longevity. It’s beneficial to take steps that help you either counteract hard water or avoid it completely. That may require calling a professional to help solve your hard water problem.

Install A Water Softener Shower Head

Soft water is the opposite of hard water and although it contains some minerals, the concentration is much lower. Cleaner and healthier water means that it won’t damage your hair and scalp as much. The best way to achieve softer water is by installing a water softener in the home, but this can be quite expensive. A simpler, cost-effective alternative is to install a water softener shower head, which has carbon-filled cartridges that remove the minerals from the water before it cascades onto your body.

Try A Citrus Vinegar Rinse

In order to combat the damage from hard water, you have to start at the scalp. A mixture of distilled water, apple cider vinegar, and citrus juice is one of the best ways give life to the scalp. Apple cider vinegar helps to lower the pH of the skin and contains hair-healthy vitamins, including vitamins B and C.

Use A Hair Mask

If you want to restore shine and moisture to your hair, a nourishing mask twice per week is an excellent choice. The most important step when applying the hair mask is to massage it into the scalp. Ideally, you should start massaging at the scalp and slowly work the mask through the tips of your hair. Leave the mask on for a minimum of five minutes. If you don’t want to use a hair mask, a leave-in conditioner is also beneficial, but choose one that has a low pH.
