If you want to pack a lot of fruits and vegetables into one meal, make a smoothie. If you want to fill up on an assortment of valuable nutrients, make a smoothie. In case the point isn’t clear, we love smoothies, especially one that is as nutrient-dense and delicious as this recipe. This smoothie is packed with protein, fiber, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, and numerous vitamins and minerals. It is smooth, rich, and creamy just like a milkshake!

Most smoothies use banana as the base with the intension of creating a creamy texture with natural sweetness. This smoothie includes a frozen banana, but it also incorporates avocado, which contributes to the creaminess. Ideally, freeze both the banana and avocado overnight. Make sure to peel and slice the banana and avocado prior to freezing. If you freeze both of these ingredients with the peels on, you will regret it. If you already have some frozen banana or frozen avocado on hand, feel free to include that in the smoothie. You may already have packaged frozen avocado or banana, which you can use as long as there are no added ingredients.

If you are all about the chocolate life, you may want to consider making your own raw vegan chocolate almond milk or cashew milk. The way to do this is very similar to a traditional nut milk recipe, only you whisk in raw cacao powder until smooth. Because raw cacao powder has a bitter taste, you may need to add some extra grade A maple syrup or raw agave nectar to your homemade chocolate milk. If that sounds like a few too many steps, feel free to just add raw cacao powder to the smoothie with the homemade almond milk. Don’t have the energy to make almond milk? Use water instead!

What do you need to make one of the best seed milks you’ve ever tasted? Two ingredients, although we added a few extra just to enhance the flavor. Hemp milk is quick and easy to make, and the best part is that you don’t have to strain it like you would almond milk or cashew milk. It is smooth, creamy, and rich, making it a great choice for smoothies, baking, or even cooking. You could even take it to the next level and make a hemp cream, but we don’t have time for that recipe today.

If you have never had hemp milk, you are probably wondering what it tastes like. It has a similar nutty flavor to almond milk, but is creamier than both almond milk and soy milk. Hemp milk also exhibits subtle earthy notes, which is similar to the flavor of hemp seeds themselves. That’s why we decided to add raw agave nectar and alcohol-free vanilla extract to distract your taste buds from those earthy notes. Flavor notes aside, hemp milk is incredibly nutritious, exhibiting impressive amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp seeds are also rich in vitamin E and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, and potassium.

Hemp seeds are very tender, which means that they break down easily during the blending process. No soaking required to soften them! Simply add the hemp hearts and other ingredients to the blender, blend, and serve! You don’t need a nut milk bag or cheesecloth because there is no pulp!

Oregano, while a common seasoning in marinara sauce, is a staple seasoning in many different cuisines. You can commonly see it in Greek, Italian, Middle Eastern, and Mexican dishes, although Mexican oregano differs from the Mediterranean counterpart. While it enhances the flavor of various dishes from around the world, you might be surprised to learn that oregano oil exhibits impressive health benefits.

What Is Oregano Oil?

Native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, oregano belongs to the mint family. Oregano oil, or oil of oregano, is extracted from different parts of the oregano plant. Once the plant parts have been air-dried, the oil is extracted via steam distillation. You can mix oregano oil with a carrier oil and apply it topically, but should avoid consuming it orally. The reason that it is highly sought after is because oregano contains terpenes, phenols, and terpenoids, all of which are compounds that exhibit impressive antioxidant properties. The primary compounds are:

  • Thymol: is a natural anti-fungal compound that may support the immune system and protect against toxins.
  • Carvacrol: is the most abundant phenol in oregano and may help stop the growth of different types of bacteria.
  • Rosmarinic acid: is a powerful antioxidant that works to protect against free radical damage.

Which Oregano Should You Use To Make Oregano Oil?

There are many varieties of oregano and each has a distinct flavor and characteristics. There is Greek oregano, Mexican oregano, Cuban oregano, and Italian oregano, among others. Greeks refer to oregano as the “ornament of the mountains,” and rightly so, especially considering oregano is the eighth most popular herb in the world.

When you make oregano oil at home, the best choice is common oregano, which exhibits a robust flavor and high concentration of beneficial oils. Greek and Italian oregano varieties are acceptable as well, but avoid Mexican or Cuban oregano. The reason for this is because both of those varieties have different flavor profiles and may not offer the same health benefits. Ideally, use oregano that is organic or grown without pesticides.

Do You Use Dried Or Fresh Oregano?

You can use fresh or dried oregano to make your oil. Just keep in mind that fresh leaves contain more moisture, which can increase the risk of bacteria or mold growth in the oil. If you use fresh oregano leaves, make sure that the leaves are wilted before to avoid excess moisture, as too much moisture can spoil the oil.

The type of oregano you use is just as important as the carrier oil you choose. Ideally, use a high-quality carrier oil with a neutral flavor and stable shelf life, such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil. Avoid using coconut oil, as it has a distinct flavor and solidifies at cooler temperatures.

Homemade Oregano Oil

Ingredients:

  • 1 handful fresh or dried oregano leaves
  • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil

Instructions:

  • If you use fresh oregano, make sure that the leaves are wilted before infusing in the oil to avoid mold growth. You can strip the leaves and air-dry them on paper towels overnight, or you can tie oregano sprigs together and hang in a cool, dry place for several days.
  • When you are ready, add the oregano to a mortar and pestle and crush it lightly to help release the oils. You can also chop oregano on a cutting board to achieve the same result.
  • Pour the oregano into a clean glass jar and then pour the oil into the same jar, making sure to completely submerge the oregano in oil.
  • Seal the jar tightly and place in a warm, sunny spot (like a windowsill) for two weeks to allow the oil to infuse. Make sure to shake the jar gently every day.
  • Once the infusion period is over, strain the oregano from the oil through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Pour the infused oil into a clean, dry glass bottle and store in a cool, dark place to help maintain the oil’s potency.

You don’t have to go out and buy an ice cream machine or churner in order to enjoy homemade ice cream. As long as you have a blender or food processor and a freezer-safe container, you can enjoy a guilt-free dessert such as this recipe. Sure, peanut butter and chocolate ice cream is highly popular, but not everyone is a fan. Some people are also allergic to peanuts, so having an almond butter ice cream is the next best (and safest) option, provided there are no additional nut allergies.

A nut butter ice cream is such a simple concept, but packs a lot of flavor. Nut butters are naturally creamy and thick, so they help make the raw vegan ice cream a little creamier, acting similarly to frozen bananas. The dates in this recipe also help thicken the ice cream, but make sure that you soak them for one to two hours prior to blending them with the rest of the ingredients. The soaking process helps soften them, making the job a little easier on your blender. If you plan to use a food processor or have a VitaMix, you don’t have to soak your dates for longer than 15-30 minutes.

The almond butter primarily flavors this ice cream, and the flavor may change depending on the almond butter you use. Your choices are limited for almond butter since you have to use raw almond butter while cleansing. That said, different brands typically taste different. No matter which raw almond butter you use, one thing is for certain: this raw ice cream is absolutely delicious and creamy. We hope you love it as much as we do. How could you not? It’s a great source of healthy fats, protein, omega-3s, magnesium, and other vitamins and minerals.

It’s very easy for hair to become dry or brittle, especially when the weather changes. That is even truer if you spend a lot of time outdoors, more specifically in the pool or ocean. Not to mention the fact that harsh hair care products can damage hair, increasing the risk of hair loss, breakage, and frizz. Fortunately for you, the homemade hair oil treatment in this article can help nourish the scalp and promote healthier hair.

One of the great things about this hair oil treatment is that it is an inexpensive way to promote healthier hair, no matter your hair type. You can even use this product on children to help make hair more manageable! It can make hair easier to brush without irritating the tenderest of scalps. Let’s take a look at the ingredients to see why this treatment is a notch above the rest.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is known for its culinary applications, but it also has a long history of use in cosmetics. According to historians, Ancient Greeks used olive oil to make body care products, including salves, soaps, and massage oils. Researchers note that olive oil can be particularly beneficial for people with brittle hair strands. Several studies indicate that hair treated with olive oil is less prone to damage than hair not treated with olive oil. Olive oil also works to enhance the hair’s resilience, making it stronger and easier to detangle without breakage

Coconut Oil

In 2022, researchers conducted a study that tested the effects of coconut-based hair oils on human hair damaged by regular washing. Study authors concluded that coconut-based hair oils were able to reduce that damage. Researchers attribute this to the lauric acid content in coconut oil. Lauric acid is a type of saturated fat that may protect against protein loss, particularly keratin. Dyes, bleach, shampoos, and other styling products can damage hair, making it appear dull or fragile. Coconut oil contains triglycerides that are able to penetrate and interact with the hair cortex. In doing so, coconut oil can help reduce the amount of water hair absorbs, which limits daily damage.

Honey

Honey has both humectant and emollient properties, making it an excellent moisturizer for your hair. Humectants bond with water molecules, which works to add moisture to dry strands. Emollients help smooth hair follicles, helping to add shine to dull-looking hair. Because honey contains 0.5% protein, it may help restore weak and brittle hair strands. Protein treatments are very popular in modern hair care routine, considering that keratin is an essential protein that adds structure and strength to your hair.

Epsom Salt

Believe it or not, Epsom salt can benefit more than sore muscles or skin issues. According to researchers, Epsom salt may help cleanse the scalp by removing impurities, toxins, and excess sebum. By detoxifying the scalp, you unclog hair follicles, which can help improve nutrient absorption and promote hair growth

Hair Oil Treatment

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon Epsom salt
  • 1-2 drops essential oil of choice (optional)

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients (except the essential oil) to a bowl and use an immersion blender to combine. If you do not have an immersion blender, you can place the ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat and whisk as the ingredients warm up.
  • Add the essential oil to the mixture and whisk well to combine. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar and store in a cool, dry place.
  • When ready to use, shake well right before application. You can also warm it up in a microwave for 30 seconds or so to ensure the ingredients are fully liquified.
  • Massage the treatment into your hair and scalp, put a shower cap on, and leave the oil in your hair for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse the oil off in the shower and shampoo out.

There are many things that you can do to improve self-care. Many people find that great forms of self-care include meditation, exercise, bubble baths, playing video games, reading, and more. However you engage in self-care is your prerogative, and we are all for it! It is an essential component to your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Creating your own cuticle salve with natural ingredients is a great way to enhance your self-care routine. The process of creating your own beauty or skin care products can be a relaxing experience in and of itself. Not only will this cuticle salve improve your overall nail health, but it may also leave your hands feeling soft and rejuvenated. Whip it up by completing a few simple steps and it’ll be ready in under an hour! It is great to use during dry weather.

How Shea Butter Helps Your Nails

Shea butter is full of essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E. All of these nutrients help provide hydration to dry and brittle cuticles, which can help prevent cracking and bleeding. Because shea butter has emollient properties, it helps to increase moisture levels in the skin. This ensures that your cuticles remain supple and soft. Shea butter also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe any irritation or redness around the cuticle. That makes shea butter especially beneficial for anyone with discomfort that stems from dryness.

Almond Oil For Your Nails

Similar to shea butter, almond oil also contains vitamin E, which works to promote the growth of healthy cuticles. At the same time, it may help prevent breakage of both your nails and cuticles. Some preliminary research suggests that almond oil may improve blood circulation to the nail area, which encourages faster regeneration and healing. Additionally, almond oil offers anti-inflammatory properties that may relieve redness or irritation. The nourishing properties in almond oil make cuticles easier to manage by softening them. Regular use of almond oil may contribute to stronger, healthier nails and reduce the likelihood of hangnails or other common cuticle problems.

Vitamin E Oil Supports The Cuticles

In addition to the vitamin E present in both shea butter and almond oil, we decided to add more to the cuticle salve with vitamin E oil. Just like your skin, your nails require moisture to remain healthy and strong. Vitamin E oil is incredibly hydrating and helps restore dry cuticles by enhancing moisture in the nail bed. In order to produce healthy nails, keratin dead cells have to receive a continued blood supply that is rich in vital nutrients. Vitamin E oil helps supply the blood with the right amount of nutrients necessary for healthy growth.

Beeswax Benefits Cuticles

Beeswax is a common ingredient in various beauty products, especially cuticle care products, lip balms, and other products that promise hydration. It can keep the nails and cuticles healthy by forming a protective barrier that prevents damage. Not only does this protective layer maintain hydration, but it also protects against the elements. Beeswax also works to keep the cuticles supple and healthy by providing hydration via the emollient properties.

Homemade Cuticle Salve

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/4 cup almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 5-10 drops essential oil of choice (optional for fragrance)

Instructions:

  • Combine the shea butter, almond oil, and beeswax pellets in a microwave-safe container and microwave for about 45 to 60 seconds (or until everything is melted). Just make sure to monitor it closely so it doesn’t overheat.
  • Once the mixture is melted, remove the container from the microwave and stir with a wooden utensil. Add the vitamin E oil and optional essential oil and stir to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into a storage jar and allow it to cool completely at room temperature. This is a crucial step, as it solidifies into the salve, which you can apply easily.
  • Store the salve in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It can last for several months, but if it changes in scent or texture, go ahead and discard it.

The holidays are filled with love, joy, merriment, family, and lots and lots of food. Too often are holiday dishes rich, heavy, and filled with unhealthy fats and excess salt. The worst part is that these unhealthy dishes are not just at the big holiday gathering. Coffee shops, work parties, gatherings with friends, and other events during this time of year feature an assortment of fattening foods. They are incredibly delicious, which is why they are so hard to resist.

At a certain point, though, your body lets you know that it’s time to lighten the load. After all, the body can only take so much! The feelings of fullness last beyond the big meal because people continue eating leftovers for days. This is perfectly common, and most people call the remaining days of the year a wash because their fitness or health goals start on January 1st. Don’t be that person because that attitude can propel poor eating habits into the New Year. You want to get a head start on your healthy eating!

It’s perfectly acceptable to abandon ship, veer from the norm, and start making recipes that are much easier on the body after the holidays. Learn the leftover lesson from previous years and get back on the path to better health before the New Year. To help encourage detoxification, though, you need to eat the right foods. The persimmon is a fall and winter fruit (available from October to February) that is uniquely plump and sweet. It is an underrated fruit, primarily because a lot of people ignore them in the grocery store. They know what the fruit looks like, but since they don’t know what to do with it, the fruit remains in the store. For those who love persimmons and have countless recipes, we applaud your culinary knowledge and skills. If you are familiar with persimmons, then you know they are not for everyone, especially, kids, but this smoothie may change the way the little ones feel about the unique fruit.

If you are new to persimmons, it can be tricky to determine their ripeness. Just like other fruits, persimmons taste best when you allow them to fully ripen. Hachiya persimmons take a little longer to ripen than Fuyu persimmons, which you will want to buy for this recipe. Many people think that Fuyu persimmons have a sweeter flavor profile and that they are less astringent than Hachiya persimmons. A Fuyu persimmon is ripe when it is a little squishy, but still slightly firm to the touch. Firm Hachiya persimmons are very tart, and only sweeten up once they fully ripen.

As far as flavor goes, Fuyu persimmons have a mild taste with a honey-like flavor. You can eat them raw, removing the tops and the skin before slicing them up. Just make sure to discard any large seeds, especially before you blend them into this smoothie. The persimmons are the only fruit or vegetable in this smoothie and they are slightly sour, the homemade almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lemon juice will balance that tartness. We hope you (and the kids!) love this simple persimmon smoothie. It’s definitely one for the books that is very easy to make.

Homemade nut butter is just the way to go, folks. You only need two ingredients and a food processor to make a smooth and creamy nut butter that is free of preservatives and other unnecessary ingredients. Unlike store bought brands, this macadamia nut butter is free of palm oil, lectins, peanuts, and added sugars. That means that this nut butter is raw vegan, Whole30-approved, Paleo, grain-free, gluten-free, keto, and sugar-free. The subtle hint of sea salt perfectly complements the robust macadamia nuts.

Is homemade macadamia nut butter better than store bought varieties? While both are great options, making your own allows you to control the ingredients and blend until you reach your desired consistency. Perhaps you enjoy a nut butter that is just between chunky and smooth. Maybe you like nut butter to be velvety smooth, and you can have control over that when you make your own. Plus, homemade macadamia nut butter is nearly identical in price as the store bought version. Depending on which stores you have access to, you may or may not always see macadamia nut butter available. If you find raw macadamia nuts, though, you can transform them into a luxurious butter.

You will need a food processor for this recipe because a blender just won’t cut it. To achieve a smooth nut butter, you will probably have to blend for three to five minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides periodically. Just keep blending, scraping down the sides, and blending again until you achieve a smooth consistency. Once you are satisfied, spoon the butter into a container, seal the lid, and refrigerate. Use when ready.

If we know one thing about winter, it is that the weather is colder and skin can dry out easily. The constant changing of environments does not do the skin any favors. Being bundled up outside in the cold and then going inside to the warm, dry heat is a recipe for dry skin. Fortunately, you can pamper your skin and bring it back to life with the homemade body butter in this article. It is filled with natural ingredients that help to leave the skin feeling soft, radiant, and supple.

What’s The Difference Between Body Butter And Lotion?

Both body lotions and body butters work to moisturize the skin below the neck. Each of these skin care products can help soften skin and minimize dryness, but they work differently. The primary difference between lotion and body butter is the texture. While lotion has a higher water content and more liquid consistency, body butter is thicker and creamier. Body butter also tends to have a higher concentration of heavy moisturizers, such as shea butter. Body lotion tends to be formulated with glycerin, or other lightweight hydrators.

Generally speaking, body butter is ideal for dry or rough skin. The ingredients work to replenish the skin’s natural oils and protect them from stressors that increase irritation or dryness. Below, we’ll detail two ingredients that make this body butter highly nourishing for the skin.

Shea Butter

Shea butter comes from the kernels of shea trees, which are native to sub-Saharan Africa. To this day, most shea butter still comes from this region. Shea butter helps promote hydration because it contains several types of fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. These work to improve the skin barrier and protect the skin from damaging environmental pollutants. Shea butter also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for nourishing inflamed or upset skin. Additionally, shea butter is thought to offer mild protection from the sun, although it is not a replacement for standard sunscreen.

Coconut Oil

Promoted for its ability to moisturize dry skin, coconut oil offers many compounds that help improve overall skin health. It exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties when applied topically. Studies have shown that it may help relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis or eczema, which can cause itchy rash. The anti-inflammatory properties work to improve skin barrier function and prevent moisture loss. And while coconut oil may not be able to remove stretch marks, it is possible that topical application may help reduce their appearance. More research is necessary on that topic, though.

Whipped Gingerbread Body Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup raw shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp  gingerbread spice
  • 4 drops ginger essential oil
  • 4 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 2 drops clove essential oil
  • 2 drops vanilla essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the shea butter and coconut oil to a heat-safe bowl or measuring cup. Melt the two ingredients in the microwave for one minute.
  • Remove and stir well. If the shea butter and coconut oil are not fully melted, heat in the microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Remove and stir well again to combine.
  • Transfer the melted mixture to the bowl of a stand mixer and refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Remove from the refrigerator and use the stand mixer to whip the mixture on high for five minutes. Stop to scrape down the sides every minute and continue blending until you have a light, fluffy cream.
