What is your favorite part of your facial routine? Is it the hydrating cream, anti-aging serum, your cleansing scrub, or aloe vera mask? Perhaps it is all of the above because treating your skin with the utmost care is of great importance to you. Is a jade roller part of your skin care routine yet? This tool may just be one of natural beauty’s best kept secrets? Does it actually work, though, and how do you use it? We aim to answer these questions in this article.

What Is A Jade Roller?

This face roller is a small facial massage tool made from jade stone. The belief is that jade has healing properties and it is naturally cool to the touch. In general, massaging your face with the cool stone works to improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and enhance the overall glow of the skin. There are typically two sides to a roller, one being a little larger and the other being smaller. The two rollers exist to target either large or smaller areas of the face and neck.

Why Is Jade So Special?

Traditionally, jade was prized for its ability to provide balance and relax muscles. Jade symbolizes grace, prosperity, and beauty, and some cultures refer to jade as the stone of eternal youth. And if it seems like jade rolling is not a new practice, you are 100% correct. Historians note that jade face rollers were used in 7th century China to improve circulation and overall health. Additionally, other cultures used jade to detoxify the body, balance chakras, and encourage harmony and prosperity. More importantly, several reports found that jade face rollers enhance lymphatic flow, which helps flush out waste and eliminate puffiness. Read on to learn more about the benefits of jade rolling.

Benefits Of Jade Rolling

Reduce Jaw Tension

The face can hold a lot of tension, especially along the jawline. Focus extra time along the jawline to work out tension, applying a little more pressure near the hinge joints. Digging into those facial muscles is like a mini deep tissue massage that works to loosen them up and reduce tension.

Lymphatic Drainage

As stated earlier, massaging your face with a jade face roller can promote lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that work to rid the body of toxins, waste, and unwanted materials. Stimulating lymphatic flow and circulation moves lymphatic fluid and helps the body drain it out. In doing so, you may reduce fine lines and wrinkles and potentially improve other skin disorders.

Reduce Puffiness

It is very common to wake up with extra water in your face. As a result, your eyes may appear puffy and have dark circles under them. Whip out the jade face roller because the cool stone may reduce that inflamed puffiness naturally. If you notice puffiness anywhere else on your face, use the roller to help de-puff the affected areas.

Promote Glowing Skin

Add more glow to your facial skin by gliding the jade roller across your face. Massaging facial skin also increases blood circulation, which helps to enhance overall glow and release tension in the facial muscles. The relaxation works to improve skin elasticity, and your cheekbones may look more defined after continued use.

How To Use A Jade Roller

Before you get rolling, you have to prep your face. Make sure that you cleanse and moisturize your face prior or else jade rolling will not be as effective. For example, remove any makeup or exfoliant from your face before using a jade roller. After cleansing your face, apply a facial toner to lift impurities out and balance your skin’s pH. Use a tightening eye cream and facial moisturizer and then use the rolling tips below:

  • Using the large roller, start at your collarbone and gently roll up toward your jaw. Stop when you reach your jaw and then move the jade roller over to the next portion of the neck. Repeat until you cover the entire neck area, collarbone to collarbone.
  • Continue with the large roller and start at the base of your chin. Roll outward and upward toward the bottom of your earlobe. Repeat on the other side and then move the roller higher up on the chin and roll toward your temples.
  • Place the large roller on one side of your nose near the base and roll out toward your temples. Move the roller one notch up until you roll the entire cheek area, except for directly under the eyes. Make sure to do both sides.
  • Stick with the large roller to address the forehead area. Begin in the center of your forehead and roll out toward your temples. Repeat a few times on each side, moving up until you are at your hairline.
  • Use the small side of the roller to address the area above your mouth. Start above your upper lip and roll outward and upward toward your temples. This is the best way to naturally lift your face.
  • Finally, dress the under eye area with the small side of the roller. Roll from the side of your nose just under the eyes in a delicate motion. Don’t apply too much pressure while you roll this area. With each roll, pull up to the edge of your eyebrow and up to your hairline.

Jade face rollers have been in the beauty world for quite some time now. These rollers gently massage the skin and help stimulate lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness in the process. Facial massage with a jade roller also promotes healthier circulation, which contributes to brighter, more radiant skin.

On the basis that jade rollers improve circulation, using jade combs is meant to enhance scalp circulation for optimal hair growth and relaxation. Unfortunately, these claims are not supported by scientific evidence. That said, there are some health experts that deliver information about why using jade combs may be beneficial for your hair and scalp

What Are Jade Combs?

These combs are made from jade or rose quartz, both of which are stones that benefit the hair and skin in numerous ways. Historically, these combs were used in the ancient Chinese tradition of combing therapy. The belief is that this therapy helped stimulate hair follicles and relax the scalp, a combination that encourages hair growth. Ancient Chinese tradition states that the scalp connects to the entire body. Getting a good scalp massage, then, has a positive effect on the hair and the rest of your body. It works in similar fashion to acupressure therapy.

Jade is one of the most revered stones in Chinese and East Asian medicine. Healers believe that it promotes longevity, health, and beauty. These are just beliefs and even though anecdotal evidence may claim that jade exhibits these abilities, no scientific data supports them.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Jade Combs?

Everyone wants to know if they are legitimate or simply hype among beauty influencers. Some of them amount to $52, so it’s only natural to wonder about their legitimacy. The claim is that they enhance relaxation, reduce tension, and encourage healthier hair growth. Board-certified dermatologists agree that anecdotal evidence is the only thing to go off. There is, however, one tiny morsel of support. A small study in 2016 monitored nine Japanese men who performed four-minute scalp massages daily for 24 weeks. Their hair increased in thickness by the end of the study. This had nothing to do with jade combs; rather, it was a small study focused on scalp massage.

Are There Any Downsides To Jade Combs?

When performed safely and in moderation, jade combs are unlikely to hurt you in any way. The only potential downside is the cost of high-quality jade. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, some jade combs can cost $52, while others are under $10. If you are just trying it out for experimentation, there’s no need to drop all of your money on a comb. Additionally, manage your expectations when you purchase one of these combs. There’s no guarantee that you’ll experience dramatic changes in hair thickness. The comb, however, does feel nice and will last you a long time, as long as you don’t drop it.

How To Use A Jade Comb

This is a DIY self-care treatment that does not require a specialist. In fact, the practice is rooted in folk medicine, so you can easily brush your hair and massage the scalp at home. Direct most of the pressure you apply to the scalp, and apply more than you would if you were simply brushing. There’s no wrong way to comb your hair, but you can improve your combing habits. Simply comb your hair in all directions for best results. Front to back, left to right, right to front, back to left, and upside down if necessary! It may take a while to experience results, but you may find that combing helps relax the scalp within the first couple uses.

Lack of sleep, stress, and looking at the computer screen for hours on end can create puffiness or dark circles around the eyes. Puffiness can also result from overeating, which is especially common during the holiday season. The overly-salted and sugary dishes can increase fluid build-up in the body. Additionally, holiday travel can also take a toll on your skin. Combine all of these things and the skin around your eyes may be puffier than ever.

Jade face rollers, oils, moisturizers, and more may make the skin feel lovely, but are they more effective than a massage? Many people like to avoid touching their face, as the hands often carry bacteria that can harm facial skin. With very clean hands, however, it’s possible to gently massage the face to decrease puffiness and improve glow. A de-puffing massage can promote lymphatic drainage, which may reduce the frequency of breakouts, dark circles, and puffiness. Above all else, a facial massage feels incredible and it’s easy to incorporate the beauty products you use in your daily skin care regimen.

Importance Of Lymphatic Drainage

According to experts, any facialist worth their salt incorporates lymphatic drainage into their services. It typically involves gentle tapping motions with your fingertips in a circular motion around the eyes. The tapping or gentle massage helps to increase blood flow to the area, which helps decrease swelling. To drain lymph properly, it’s best to massage in an outward motion, starting near the cheekbones and swooping out towards the temples. You can do this type of massage any time of day, as long as you have clean hands. Please continue reading to learn how to do the massage.

Quick Facial Massage For Eye Area

The key to a great facial massage is light pressure with the fingertips. Pull them upward and outward to encourage more circulation in the tissues. Delivering more oxygen to skin cells can help improve complexion and reduce puffiness. It can be beneficial to massage with a skin-safe carrier oil or moisturizer for gentle glide.

You can actually encourage the reduction of puffiness if you do the massage with a moisturizer that contains caffeine. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it compresses blood vessels in the skin. This can help support the resolution of inflammatory pathways and may reduce flushing, both of which contribute to puffy eyes. You can also massage with the inside of a banana peel, as the high potassium content helps to counteract fluid build-up

Step 1

After cleaning your hands thoroughly, gently dab your fingers in a moisturizer or oil. Starting from the corners of your mouth, sweep your fingertips around your cheekbones and up to your temples in a J-shaped motion.

Step 2

Do the same motion as in Step 1, but start from the corners of your nostrils instead. Sweep your fingertips upwards in a J-shaped motion toward your temples. Then you can repeat this motion, starting from the bridge of your nose. Because this is closer to the eyes, make sure to be extra gentle here. You can add more oil or moisturizer if you feel your fingertips tugging your skin.

Step 3

Now it’s time to trace the eye shape in an inverse motion. Start near the bridge of the nose and glide the fingertips just under the brow bone until you reach the temples. Repeat this cycle twice and be sure to be delicate on the skin. Avoid pulling and tugging because that will make things worse.

You may have seen videos on the interwebs that show people massaging their faces with jade rollers. We know that it’s hard to stay on top of all things beauty, but we had to find out if these new beauty tools are all they are chalked up to be.

According to history, the jade face roller is not a new trend. Empresses and aristocrats in 17th century China used them to help themselves appear younger. Typically made from solid jade, these rollers are said to reduce puffiness, minimize fine lines, and get rid of dark circles under the eyes. To use it, gently massage the rolling tool from the center of your face in upward and outward motions.

The rolling facial massage is said to stimulate the lymphatic system and increase circulation. Recent studies suggest that increased blood circulation to the face can improve your complexion. The de-puffing claims also seem to have some truth behind them. Because jade rolling works to promote lymphatic drainage, you can help to reduce swelling.

Here’s The Deal

Whenever you have poor circulation in the face, your eyes can become puffy. Lymphatic fluid tends to settle in certain areas, like the areas around your eyes, but you can drain it by gently massaging the skin. You can do this with some organic virgin coconut oil and your fingers. You don’t need the jade roller, even though the stone has a cooling effect that is said to aid with the reduction of puffiness or redness.

While jade rollers may have a few benefits, they cannot increase collagen production, reduce wrinkles, or clear up acne outbreaks. A lot of people like face rollers because they feels nice, which can indirectly improve stress-related acne. There’s nothing wrong with using a jade roller every day if it makes you feel good, but it really doesn’t do a whole lot for your skin. If you are going to use one, make sure to massage gently because too much pressure could rupture pimples and lead to further inflammation or breakouts.

A few things are for certain: using a jade roller will be soothing; the massage will feel nice; and you may relieve tension in your face. A few other things are for certain: we aren’t sure they are worth your while; we don’t know if they will decrease puffiness; and we don’t know if they’ll get rid of dark circles.
