For many years, people have either suspected or known that health of the body is influenced by that of the mind. You may say, “My heart hurts,” after a breakup because the intense emotions cause you physical pain. On the other hand, a feeling of elation may boost energy levels and reduce your need for caffeine.

The American Psychological Association (APA) states that emotions are subject to mental reactions that involve physical and behavioral responses. In simpler terms, your emotions can influence the body, mind, and even your actions. You experience a variety of emotions daily, so knowing what they are, why you feel them, and how they affect you can help you better understand how they influence your overall health.

Types Of Emotions

Mental health experts suggest that emotions fall into two categories: basic emotions and complex emotions. Basic emotions are revealed by recognizable facial expressions and happen automatically. Such emotions include:

  • Sadness
  • Fear
  • Surprise
  • Joy
  • Disgust
  • Anger

Those emotions are intertwined with human behavior and present from birth. Complex emotions, on the other hand, are not universal and do not have such recognizable facial expressions associated with them. These complex emotions include:

  • Envy
  • Love
  • Grief
  • Gratitude
  • Worry
  • Pride
  • Regret
  • Embarrassment
  • Jealousy

There are many more complex emotions that are not on the above list. The APA suggests that complex emotions are typically the result of two or more emotions. Hate, for example, could be a combination of jealousy, disgust, and anger. Once again, these complex emotions do not have the same facial tells as basic emotions.

How Emotions Affect Your Physical Health

According to research, there is a link between positive emotions and physical health. In fact, people with a more positive outlook on life tend to have lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Additionally, they have a reduced risk of heart disease, but researchers don’t fully understand if positive emotions lead to better health or if being in good health contributes to positive emotions. For now, experts theorize that a combination of both factors are at play.

Some evidence shows that experiencing positive emotions can affect recovery from an injury or sickness. One study found that having a positive outlook influenced how quickly participants got better, noting that positivity even impacted survival rates. Negative emotions, on the other hand, have an association with negative health issues or symptoms. People who cannot successfully manage emotions may live with stress, or have a higher likelihood of other health complications.

How Emotions Affect Your Mental Health

When trying to assess how emotions affect your mental health, you have to first establish if the emotions are “bad” or negative. Negative emotions usually indicate a problem that requires your attention. If you struggle to manage those negative emotions, or simply attempt to ignore them when they arise, they can negatively affect your mental health. If you bottle these emotions up for too long, such as chronic anger, fear, or sadness, your risk of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse increases.

If you are able to recognize negative emotions for what they are and learn to manage those feelings, you can move beyond them and develop resilience. Resilient people tend to move past negativity and usually have more positive emotions. In fact, they usually learn to find meaning in their life, even when it gets hard. That doesn’t mean they are free of negative emotions; rather, they recognize those feelings, deal with the issues, and do their best to change their outlook on life.

Although research indicates a link between optimism and hope and better health, constant positive thinking can damage your mental health. There is such a thing as toxic positivity, which leads to unreal expectations and an inability to feel negative emotions. When you consider your emotions, aim to strike a balance between the positive and negative ones. Negative emotions serve their purpose as much as the positive ones do, but just remember that you have to be negative all the time. Just remember to feel emotions as they come and recognize why you’re feeling them!

The classic definition of an optimist is someone who sees the glass half full. On the other hand, a pessimist sees the glass half empty. The problem with the latter is that it can negatively affect multiple areas of your health, not just your mental well-being. Learning to be more optimistic can help you reduce stress, cope with change, and prompt more opportunities.

It can be difficult to see the world through an optimistic lens, especially for people who are not inherently optimistic. Additionally, with so much injustice, climate change, natural disasters, and political issues, how can one find positivity in life? Well, optimists don’t simply see rainbows and butterflies and think that the world is problem-free. Instead, optimism involves developing a hopeful outlook that invites positivity and success for a healthier future

Optimism And Your Brain

Researchers attribute positive moods with left-brain activity. Feelings of anger, negativity, or rejection are associated with right-brain activity. The brain may have a predisposition for either positive or negative thinking, according to several psychological studies. Genetics do play a role in outlook, but they do not shape the entire person or way of thinking. If you do find yourself expecting the worst or viewing things in a negative light, you can increase your optimism towards life. Continue reading to learn how.

Minimize Obstacles To Success

It’s very easy for you to get in the way of your own success. Bad habits, low productivity, and negative relationships can prevent you from meeting your goals. If you want to achieve optimism, you have to make steady progress. Feeling stagnant can increase pessimism, so it’s best to limit distractions and avoid temptations. For example, if you like to waste time scrolling through Instagram, power off your phone while you do work. If you’re writing a book, commit to one hour of writing per day and avoid distractions during this time. Consistency yields results!

Give Yourself Credit

There are moments in life when you achieve goals or make things happen. You were able to meet your goals, but did you give yourself credit? If you fail to recognize your strengths that helped you along the way, it’s easy to feel unworthy or pessimistic. Perhaps you spent hours studying for a test and aced it. Acknowledge how prepared you were, but also applaud your intelligence and the dedication it took to pass that test.

Focus On What You Can Control

As you may know, there are many things in life that are completely out of your control. You can look back at past events and spend hours dwelling on what went wrong. It’s also easy to pick apart past events to construct a negative view of the future. These are unproductive actions that will not yield an optimistic outlook. According to psychologists, it’s best to remain in the present moment. This can help you stay more focused and positive, so you can deal with things as they come to you. Focus on what you can do in the present to reach your future goal.

Focus On Solutions, Not Problems

It’s very easy to obsess over a problem and spiral into a fit of negativity. When you only focus on things that go wrong, you start to doubt everything that led to that moment. Instead of doing this, experts recommend asking this question: What can I do to make this situation better? It’s so much easier to resort to negativity, which is why developing an optimistic outlook can be difficult. Focus on solution-based thinking instead of problem-focused thinking. When you focus on solutions, you can move forward and realize possibilities. This is one of the building blocks of optimism.

Nurture A Happy Body

It’s much easier to experience optimism when you feel good. A happy body is a breeding ground for positive thoughts and emotions. Lack of sleep, poor eating habits, and too little exercise can interfere with a happy and healthy body. For optimal mental health, you need to train the body, much like a professional athlete. Focus on sleep, rest, regular exercise, reducing stress levels, and eating healthy foods. Establishing a healthier body may improve mental wellness. Feeling good can help you in more ways than you imagine.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. This adage is old yet still relevant and meaningful.

The importance of having a positive attitude cannot be underestimated. There will always be tough situations in life. Sometimes the best-laid plans can go awry. Sometimes consequences result from unforeseeable circumstances. Sometimes every possible thing that can go wrong goes wrong, usually in the pouring rain. And sometimes you just have a really bad day. These situations highlight how easy it is for obstacles to manifest themselves in your day-to-day life. Yet they also remind us the importance of maintaining a positive attitude.

Choose to be positive

Being positive is choice and decision. Make the decision to live your life this way. You too have that choice and a can also make that decision if you haven’t already. It would be in your best interest too if you made that decision to consciously be positive. If you don’t think so, give it a try for 20 days (or 3 weeks) and see what happens.

Positivity offers many benefits and dividends to be reaped over the years of your life. Positivity raises your vibration. It enhances your aura. It attracts people to you. Positivity makes you a bright light that shines in the midst of the darkness of negativity.

To be positive means to be:

  • Constructive in intention or attitude
  • Showing optimism and confidence
  • Showing pleasing progress, gain, or improvement, with no possibility of doubt
  • Clear and definite

Attitude is a major component of success. Attitude, along with aptitude, determines altitude – how high one will fly in life. Having a positive attitude can help you be successful in every aspect of your life, especially in love, family, business, and social standing.

Just like positivity, optimism creates magnetism. Pessimism repels people. Nobody really likes to be around a pessimistic person. There’s a big difference between a pessimist and an optimist. A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity whereas an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

Doubt of positive outcomes and brighter days, realizing that doubt is the subconscious will to fail in many regards and respects.

Become clear and definite about your purpose in life. Become faithful and trustful in your abilities to live out and perform your life’s higher purpose.

Tools to be positive

Create strategies to be as positive as you can. For example:

  • Give thanks every day
  • Give back by doing a good deed every day
  • Let go…Forgive those who have hurt you
  • Ask for forgiveness of people you’ve hurt
  • Appreciate what you have
  • Compliment a stranger
  • Take in the scenery…even if it’s a flowering plant or tree in your garden
  • Donate something
  • Volunteer
  • Sing your favorite song as loud as you can
  • Smile whenever you see someone

These may seem really basic, but they also really work.

Defeat negativity

Positivity neutralizes negativity.

If person says something negative try to say something positive in response to what was said, and after a couple of rounds of going back and forth and matching negativity with positivity, the negative person would retreat.

The negative person will always retreat because they can’t feed on negativity. Soon, it was impressed upon the negative person not to talk to you, at least about negative stuff, because you don’t feed their negativity.

You defeat negativity in people by remaining positive. It eventually became very easy too because in being and remaining positive. Simply be yourself…it’s the easiest thing to do.
