If you are someone who loves a room with a scent, chances are that friends or family will give you candles this holiday season. Candles are an easy gift to give, and they are even easier to regift if you don’t like the scent. Unfortunately, a lot of candles and air fresheners or wall plug-ins contain harsh chemicals that affect the endocrine system. They can even be harmful for respiratory systems, especially if you have little ones in the house.

Scientific research indicates that there is a lack of oversight in the United States when it comes to the fragrance industry. You may not know it, but you are surrounded by fragrances in shampoos, detergents, makeup, creams, toners, lotions, and so much more. All of these products contain unnamed artificial fragrance blends. There are over 4,000 fragrance ingredients disclosed on the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) transparency list. Many of them are linked to serious health problems, including cancer, hormonal imbalances, and respiratory issues.

Due to copyright laws, though, manufacturers do not have to disclose the ingredients in their fragrance blends. Even fragrance-free products can contain some problematic ingredients on the IFRA transparency list. The unfortunate reality is that many of these ingredients are in a lot of products that you probably use right now. That’s why we encourage you to boycott air fresheners and candles and make the room sprays in this article instead.

DIY Holiday Room Sprays

These holiday room sprays are quick and easy to make, and they make your home smell amazing. What’s even better is that they are free of toxic chemicals and make for excellent gifts, which is great if you are trying to save some money this holiday season. Additionally, you can spray them on your bed to freshen up your linens. A quick note before we provide the recipes is that you should use dark glass bottles for these sprays. The reason for that is because essential oils contain potent compounds that can break down and react when they come in contact with plastic. Essential oils also go bad if exposed to UV radiation.

How To Make Holiday Room Sprays

You will need your dark glass bottles, distilled water (if possible), and high quality essential oils. Make sure that your essential oils are pure because fake essential oils are just as bad as synthetic candles and air fresheners. Finally, you will need witch hazel, which helps combine water and essential oils, allowing the scent to linger in the room for a long time.

Making your own face serum is fun and simple, not to mention beneficial for your skin. A face serum can add moisture and high concentrations of nutrients for your skin. Basically, a serum is a thin-viscosity topical product that will penetrate the skin’s surface more effectively. Due to the higher concentration of active ingredients, it may take a shorter amount of time to see visible results.

Wondering why you cannot just use a moisturizer or face cream in place of a serum? First and foremost, there is no rule saying that you have to use a serum. A serum just happens to be lighter and delivers more active ingredients to the skin quickly, after you’ve cleansed the skin. You also have to seal the serum in with a moisturizer or face cream. Think of a serum like a secret weapon for your facial skin, especially if you want to target dullness, fine lines, or acne.

How To Select A Carrier Oil

There are a few things to consider when choosing a carrier oil. Some of the best options are grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, rose hip oil, sweet almond oil, and tamanu oil. The reason that those are great is because they do not clog pores and enhance moisture in the skin. We will detail a few benefits of each of those oils below:

 • Grapeseed oil: Great for all skin types, but it is most beneficial for oily skin because it helps reduce the risk of breakouts.
 • Jojoba oil: This oil helps support the skin’s pH balance and is very lightweight. Its molecular structure is similar to sebum, the oil that the skin naturally produces, making it great for all skin types.
 • Rose hip oil: With a subtle aroma, rose hip oil is great for tissue regeneration and dull or aging skin. You can combine it with other carrier oils at a 10-20% ratio, and it can be used on all skin types, especially mature skin.
 • Sweet almond oil: Soothing, nourishing, and offering a light aroma, sweet almond oil helps create an even skin tone with its light texture. It is greatly beneficial for dry skin.
 • Tamanu oil: Known for its wound-healing properties, tamanu oil helps form new tissue because of the rich antioxidant content. It also works to reduce the appearance of acne scars and is commonly used for oily or acne-prone skin.

How To Select The Right Essential Oils

Essential oils can be tricky, especially if you have sensitive skin. Beauty experts agree that frankincense, blue tansy, and lavender essential oil are great for any skin type. All of those oils will work beautifully in your DIY face serum. Should you want to choose others or select a combination of them, consider the following when selecting the oils:

 • Sensitive skin: Frankincense, rose, helichrysum, and copaiba oils are great for those with sensitive skin.
 • Mature skin: Ylang ylang, helichrysum, sandalwood, and rose oils are excellent choices.
 • Dry skin: For those with dry skin, royal Hawaiian sandalwood, myrrh, jasmine, clary sage, and cedarwood oils are the top picks.
 • Oily skin: Many essential oils benefit oily skin, but the best ones are lemon, grapefruit, ylang ylang, cypress, tea tree, and geranium essential oils.

You may want to mix and match different oils for your skin type. You can also select many other essential oils that are quite refreshing. Just keep in mind that citrus oils may cause photosensitivity when out in the sun. Should you want to use citrus essential oils, apply them at night or when you are not going to be in the sun.

Before you make the serum, figure out which carrier oils and essential oils work best for your skin type. Once you figure that out, you are all set!

DIY Face Serum

Ingredients:

 • 2 ounces carrier oil of choice
 • 15-20 drops essential oils for each ounce in the bottle

Instructions:

 • After selecting your carrier oil, pour it into a small dropper bottle and then add the essential oils. Ideally, only use two essential oils in this glow serum
 • Screw on the dropper lid and shake until fully mixed.
 • When ready, use five to eight drops on your face and massage gently.

Peaches have a very short season, so we encourage you to get your hands on them right now. Squeeze as many peachy delights as you can into your diet during the summer months. Trust us when we say that you won’t regret it. This green smoothie is more like a creamy milkshake than it is a smoothie. It energizes the body and powers it with pure plant goodness. If you don’t have the time to make your own almond milk, feel free to use filtered water, although that will make it less milkshake-like. You can also use homemade cashew milk if you prefer the flavor.

This smoothie only has four ingredients: homemade almond milk, peaches, spinach, and orange. Spinach is a powerhouse of a leafy green, offering magnesium, iron, protein, fiber, folate, vitamin K, and antioxidants. The peach, which you should pit, cube, and freeze ahead of time, is the source of sweetness in this recipe. Peaches are rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, such as fiber, vitamins & C, potassium, niacin, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and some B vitamins. While peaches are highly impressive from a nutritional standpoint, they are purely delicious, especially during peak season.

The homemade almond milk is the ingredient that makes this smoothie taste more like a milkshake. Homemade is just better! It offers a subtle nuttiness that complements the peaches and spinach. Finally, the orange offers lots of vitamin C and a hint of sour, which is refreshing break from the sweet, succulent peaches. Make it and let us know if you like it so that we can post similar recipes!

It’s the middle of March, which can only mean one thing: St Patrick’s Day is nearly here. There is a certain food establishment that serves the classic Shamrock Shake annually. You know the one, right? There are golden arches, or something like that (wink wink). The main thing we want is for you not to succumb to the temptation. Don’t let curiosity get the better of you because one of those small shakes contains the following nutrition:

 • Calories: 500
 • Total carbohydrates: 82 grams (g)
 • Protein: 11 g
 • Total Fat: 14 g
 • Cholesterol: 55 milligrams (mg)
 • Calcium: 380 mg
 • Potassium: 500 mg
 • Sodium: 160 mg

For reference, the shake is made with vanilla ice cream, a sugary processed syrup, and whipped cream. This recipe doesn’t contain any of those things, because we actually care about your health. The good news is that there are many different ways to create your own shamrock shake. You just have to keep an open mind about your food, and all that you can do with it.

This shake is not really a shake; rather, it’s a smoothie. Avocado contributes to the green color, but so does the spinach and mint. Avocado is a great smoothie ingredient because it helps make it more creamy, while also adding protein, healthy fats, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C. Don’t worry…you won’t taste it at all, especially since this smoothie also contains bananas, which provide natural sweetness. The touch of raw cacao powder is optional, but it provides the classic mint chocolate combo that a shamrock shake is.

If you are a fan of hot styling tools, such as flat irons, blow dryers, and curling irons, it’s time you learn about heat protectants. Although those hair styling products can do wonders for your look, they can damage your hair and cause breakage. That is why we want to turn you on to heat protectants, which can help your hair look its absolute best.

What Is A Heat Protectant?

A heat protectant is what we like to call a superhero hair product. It works to shield the hair from the heat of hair styling tools. It usually contains a formulation of ingredients, which create a barrier between your hair and the heat. That helps reduce the amount of damage that can result from higher temperatures. Plus, some heat protectants contain ingredients that also nourish the hair, helping to to lock in moisture, prevent dryness, and contribute to optimal shine.

Why Should You Use A Heat Protectant?

By using a heat protectant, you can help prevent damage to hair caused by high heat. Heat styling tools can reach temperatures of up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, which causes brittleness and dryness. Using a heat protectant can help reduce the amount of heat that the hair absorbs, which ultimately keeps it healthier. Heat protectants may also contribute to shinier hair. Protect your hair’s natural moisture and keep it lively with the following heat protectant recipes.

DIY Heat Protectant Cream With Shea Butter

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup shea butter (melted)
 • 2 tablespoons refined avocado oil
 • 10 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

 • Combine the melted shea butter and avocado oil in a small mixing bowl. Allow it to cool completely.
 • Use an electric hand mixer to whip it until it is light and fluffy. Add the lavender essential oil and continue to mix for another 10 seconds or so.
 • Spoon the mixture into a dark glass jar to help preserve the properties of the essential oil.
 • Use this cream sparingly, as it is very rich. Store in a cool, dry place.

DIY Heat Protectant Spray With Coconut Oil

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup distilled water
 • 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
 • 4 drops almond oil
 • 1 tablespoon silicone conditioner

Instructions:

 • Use a funnel to pour the water into a spray bottle. Pour the coconut oil into the same bottle, followed by the almond oil.
 • Screw on the lid and shake well. Carefully transfer the conditioner to the same bottle, screw on the lid, and shake well to combine.
 • The ingredients may separate, so just remember to shake well before each use. Work the spray through your hair with your fingers or a comb before styling your hair.

DIY Heat Protectant Spray With Argan Oil

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup argan oil
 • Oil mister spray bottle
 • Funnel

Instructions:

 • This recipe is very simple, in that it only contains argan oil. We recommend that you get an oil mister spray bottle, as a normal spray bottle will get clogged. The oil mister is essential for even application.
 • Lightly spray the oil on the ends of your hair and apply a small amount to a brush or comb, which you will use to brush your hair from the roots to tips.
 • If your hair requires more oil, then repeat the process. Style as desired and then store the oil in a cool, dry place for up to six months.

DIY Heat Protectant Spray With Aloe Vera

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup distilled water
 • 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
 • 6-8 drops olive oil

Instructions:

 • Use a funnel to pour the distilled water into a spray bottle. Add the aloe vera and olive oil, screw on the top, and shake well to combine.
 • Use the spray as a natural and inexpensive heat protectant. As a bonus, aloe vera can help repair dead skin cells on the scalp, which may reduce itchy scalp and dandruff.

People have an idea of which recipes tahini belongs to. Believe it or not, tahini is not solely reserved for dressings, hummus, and other dips or sauces. Tahini has a place in desserts, providing an earthy nuttiness that complements sweeter ingredients, such as dates, maple syrup, or agave. Some people regularly make tahini fudge! When you mix tahini with dates, however, you get an incredibly nourishing, filling treat. That ingredient combination is almost like a raw vegan version of salted caramel. Plus, that duo provides lots of fiber, potassium, and magnesium, all of which help the body function optimally.

One of the reasons why you’ll love this recipe is because of its simplicity. It comes together in a matter of minutes and it’s packed with natural sweetness. You get a hint of bitterness from the raw cacao powder, in addition to a surprising amount of nutrition. Just one tablespoon of raw cacao powder contains the following nutritional profile:

 • 2 grams (g) of fat
 • 29 calories
 • 1 g of protein
 • 2 g carbohydrates
 • 11% of the daily value (DV) of fiber
 • 5% of the DV of vitamin D
 • 5% of the DV of potassium
 • 1% of the DV of iron
 • 1% of the DV of calcium

For the dates, we recommend that you go with Medjool dates, as they are generally bigger and have more of a caramel-like texture and flavor. They can be harder to find, depending on where you are, so you can replace them with regular dates if you cannot locate Medjools. If you cannot find Medjool dates, use two regular dates for every one Medjool date. Finally, if the dates are not soft, you can soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes before blending. Just make sure to discard the soaking liquid.

Are you familiar with the legendary date shake? Well, if you have ever visited Palm Springs, CA, then you understand their importance. A date shake is a milkshake made with dates and it is a signature recipe of the Coachella Valley, which is where 95% of the countries dates grow. The only thing wrong with a date shake is that it is not raw vegan. Fear not, friends, because we did our best to recreate the classic, while putting our own spin on it. This recipe is just as indulgent, sweet, and filling as a date shake, only it is much healthier for you.

This date smoothie is the perfect combination of creamy banana, rich almond butter, sweet dates, aromatic cinnamon, and chia and flaxseed perfection. One thing you can count on, besides a nutty and sweet flavor profile, is that you will get a good amount of fiber by drinking this smoothie. This smoothie has multiple sources of fiber, including the banana, dates, flaxseed, chia seeds, and almond butter. All of these ingredients provide a mixture of soluble and insoluble fiber, both of which are necessary for optimal digestive function. When the digestive system is running smoothly, the body can eliminate toxins more effectively.

You remember that delicious almond butter we mentioned? Well, make sure that it is raw! The almond butter provides healthy fats and protein, two nutrients that help you feel full. Speaking of healthy fats, let us not forget about the flaxseed and chia seeds, both of which provide valuable omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help encourage optimal brain and heart function! Basically, this smoothie is a flavor and health bomb, so get to drinking! There’s no time to delay!

Cologne can be hit or miss. It is a very common gift for men, especially fathers who enjoy wearing cologne or aftershave. Due to personal preference and powerful or varying scents, picking the right cologne can be tricky. Not to mention, most commercial colognes contain synthetic fragrances, which can include carcinogens, respiratory irritants, environmental toxins, and more harmful substances.

Making your own cologne with all-natural essential oils ensures a product that you can use safely and confidently. Don’t worry, because essential oil colognes will not make you smell awful, or like you just stepped out of a wild animal’s cave. In fact, the cologne recipes in this article may help you smell like freedom, the wild, and volcanos. Well, to each their own regarding the scents!

Some Cologne Notes

It is helpful to understand a few notes before you mix up your essential oil blends. You need to understand fragrance notes, which are divided into three classes: top, middle, and base. The top note is the first scent you notice after application, but it is also the quickest to fade. That leaves you with the next lasting scent, the middle class. Finally, the bass class is the scent that lasts the longest. A general formula is 10-15% for the top note, 25-30% for the middle note, and 55-65% for the base note. You can adjust the ratios any way you please, but that is simply a suggested starting place.

Nightlife

Getting ready to have a night on the town? Apply this gentlemanly blend that has notes of citrus with a perfectly earthy smell of vetiver. Researchers state that the essential oils in this blend help to support immune function and promote positive feelings. The recipe is as follows:

 • 3 drops of lemon essential oil (top note)
 • 4 drops of cardamom essential oil (middle note)
 • 4 drops of ylang ylang essential oil (middle note)
 • 6 drops of vetiver essential oil (base note)

Earthy

Crave the smell of the woods? This simple blend is great to apply for any time of day, as it helps you smell like a flannel-wearing, ax-yielding lumberjack. Frankincense and copaiba are great for reducing stress and anxiety, making this a great workday cologne. The recipe is as follows:

 • 4 drops of lemongrass essential oil (top note)
 • 6 drops of copaiba essential oil (middle note)
 • 8 drops of frankincense essential oil (base note)

Outdoorsy

This is the go-to blend for anyone who loves the outdoors. Because this blend contains cedarwood essential oil, you’ll smell like you lathered yourself in pine trees. Don’t worry, though, because it has a citrusy zest, giving this blend a refreshingly manly scent. This recipe is as follows:

 • 3 drops of lemongrass essential oil (top note)
 • 3 drops of basil essential oil (middle note)
 • 4 drops of cedarwood essential oil (base note)
 • 6 drops of Douglas fir essential oil (base note)

Office

Great to wear during the workday, this blend of essential oils has beautiful notes of citrus and the woods. The essential oils help to ground your emotions, balance the mood, stimulate the brain, and promote focus. The recipe is as follows:

 • 4 drops of wild orange essential oil (top note)
 • 6 drops of sandalwood essential oil (middle note)
 • 10 drops of frankincense essential oil (base note)

How To Make DIY Cologne

This is an easy method for a homemade spray cologne using the above essential oil blends. To make the spray cologne, use a glass spray bottle, the essential oils, vegetable glycerin, and witch hazel.

Instructions:

 • In a two-ounce glass spray bottle, combine the essential oils and 1/2 tsp of vegetable glycerin.
 • Top off the rest of the bottle with witch hazel, screw on the top, and shake well.
 • Spray on the chest, wrist, or neck when ready to use and make sure to shake before each use.

The post Feeling On Edge? 7 Ways To Calm Yourself Down appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

People may tell you to relax or calm down on occasion, but that doesn’t really do anything except aggravate you. Whether something, someone, your kids, or a work project pushes you over the edge, you may want to know how to calm down in moments of stress. The need to calm down in the moment is much more desirable than a two-week plan to reduce stress. So how do you get rid of that acute stress in the moment?

Taking a walk, doing yoga, or carving out some quality “me time” are all effective ways to help reduce stress. When you are in a state of high anxiety, the nervous system has already entered the fight-or-flight state. That is why you can’t think straight in those moments, nor can you access common stress-coping skills. What you need to do is calm the body and mind down as quickly as you can. There are various techniques that help the body get back to a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state. Continue reading to learn what those techniques are.

Take Deep Breaths To Calm The Nervous System

Taking a deep breath seems like such a common piece of advice to calm down. It is one of the essential tools if you want to regulate your emotions, though. Taking a deep breath is one of the simplest and quickest ways to calm down, and it is always accessible to you. When the body is in a fight-or-flight state, it doesn’t receive enough oxygen to calm the nerves. Breathing helps you flood the body with oxygen! Just make sure you breathe in through your nose, expand the lower belly, and exhale fully out of your mouth.

Watch Some ASMR Videos

A popular trend to reduce anxiety or fall asleep is to watch autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) videos. In these videos, people crinkle paper, prepare a meal, whisper, scratch, tap, or pitter-patter. The sounds and sensations induce a tingling sensation all over the viewer’s or listener’s scalp and neck. However, not everyone experiences ASMR the same way. Some people have adverse reactions to these videos, or they are annoyed by them. If ASMR helps you calm down in the moment, use it!

Shake It Off

You don’t have to listen to the Taylor Swift song, but shaking it off can help re-balance the nervous system. In fact, animals typically shake their bodies off after encountering a perceived threat. The belief is that shaking your arms and legs vigorously for three seconds buzzes the body and induces relaxation. Alternate between the legs and arms while standing up.

Sit With Stress And Label Intentions

The magnitude of your stress response can take you by storm sometimes. Do you ever go from zero to 100 without warning? When that happens, drop into your body and identify the physical sensations that you experience. Are you tight in certain areas? Do you want to jump out of your skin? Allow these sensations to be there and name them because that will help you connect the mind and body. That will not be easy, but sit with the stress and allow it to flow in and out of your body.

Hover Over Your Stress

Visualize yourself looking down to watch yourself in that moment of high stress. This is something that you can practice because it helps you detach yourself from your stress, which may bring levity to the situation. It isn’t quite dissociative, but it does bring a lightness to the body, creating a tiny opening to realize that you have more control than you realize. That may help prevent you from acting out irrationally.

Hum To Stimulate The Vagus Nerve

When you hum, you produce a frequency in the mind and body that actually soothes the nervous system. A pilot study from April 2023 found that Bhramari, a breathing practice, improved heart rate variability. The study authors concluded that that technique may be an antidote to stress. Bhramari is a practice, during which you make a humming sound like a bee in the back of your throat.

Use The Cold To Rest And Digest

Unless you live under a rock, you are probably familiar with the ice bath or polar plunge trend. Sitting in the cold for a few minutes stimulates the vagus nerve, which controls the parasympathetic nervous system. Now, you may not have access to a cold plunge in your moment of high stress. Should you want to calm yourself down quickly, head to a sink and splash cold water on your face. You can also use an ice roller on your neck, and chest, or submerge your face into a bowl of ice water.

We can’t just give you a plain Jane smoothie in this day and age. It has to wow your taste buds! This key lime pie smoothie, which is 100% raw vegan, is incredible indulgent, but you can enjoy it without worrying about sugar intake. Unlike the classic pie, this smoothie is gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and only sweetened with a little maple syrup. You can, however, adjust the sweetness level to your desired taste.

The secret ingredient in this smoothie is, believe it or not, the avocado. It creates a luxuriously thick texture that makes this smoothie seem more like a milkshake. Just make sure that the avocado is not firm and underripe, or too mushy and overripe. You want the avocado to be just right, just like the porridge was for Goldilocks. An under or overripe avocado can dramatically change the flavor profile of this smoothie. It won’t taste like key lime pie, we can tell you that!

Although this key lime pie smoothie is sweetened with grade A maple syrup, you can use a different natural sweetener if you like. Raw agave nectar or alcohol-free stevia drops can be great options to sweeten your smoothie, especially if you are trying to remain keto.
