Things with the strangest names are often the most beneficial for your health. Bladderwrack epitomizes that statement because this nutritious seaweed can help remedy joint pain, premature signs of aging, urinary tract infections, indigestion, obesity, and thyroid problems. For centuries, herbalists used bladderwrack to support endocrine and thyroid function, particularly because of the rich iodine content.

What Is Bladderwrack?

Bladderwrack can grow up to 35 inches tall along the coastlines of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and the North and Baltic Seas. It occasionally grows in northern Canadian waters, or waters in the United States. The diverse nutritional profile is why bladderwrack is incredible sought after in the world of alternative remedies and herbal medicine. It contains phytochemicals, iodine, magnesium, vitamins A & C, calcium, potassium, and zinc. Additionally, bladderwrack’s fiber content is beneficial for gut health, but most of the scientific research surrounds thyroid and skin health.

Health Benefits Of Bladderwrack

Beneficial For The Thyroid

Bladderwrack contains iodine in the form of di-iodotyrosine (DIT), a precursor for thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (tri-iodothyronine).  The thyroid gland produces T4 by condensing DIT and thyroid peroxidase enzyme. Because bladderwrack is an excellent natural source of iodine, it is excellent for optimal thyroid health. While iodine deficiency is fairly uncommon in the United States, thyroid problems or complications have increased in recent years. People with thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, need to exercise caution with the amount of bladderwrack they consume. Ask a nutritionist or doctor for precise recommendations for bladderwrack supplementation.

Joint Pain Relief

Many studies on bladderwrack found that it exhibited potent anti-inflammatory properties. This is excellent news for people with joint pain or arthritis. You can take bladderwrack capsules, powder, or tablets and on a daily basis. In several test-tube studies, the phlorotannins and fucoxanthin in bladderwrack displayed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Since oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are common denominators between chronic diseases, taking bladderwrack may be a way to counteract this inflammation. More human research is necessary, though.

Skin Care

Bladderwrack’s high antioxidant content makes it an excellent food for your skin, especially if your skin is dry, wrinkled, or rich in fluid. You can add bladderwrack powder to baths, homemade soaps, or face masks to help pull toxins out of the skin. Initial research found that fucoidan, an antioxidant in bladderwrack, helps to promote collagen synthesis in the skin. This helps to decrease premature signs of aging and the appearance of cellulite. One study found that applying bladderwrack to human skin improved skin elasticity and contributed to more youthful looking skin.

Side Effects And Precaution

Both the internal and topical use of bladderwrack is considered safe, but it may lead to some side effects. If you apply bladderwrack topically, avoid open wounds or cuts because it can cause a rash or negative reaction. Bladderwrack is also safe for consumption, but only in small amounts. The high iodine content has the potential to throw the body out of whack. Depending on the source of the bladderwrack, it may also contain heavy metals, which are dangerous when consumed in high amounts. If you take medications like blood thinners, thyroid medications, antiarrhythmic medications, or herbal supplements like valerian root, ginkgo biloba, or St. John’s Wort, it is possible for bladderwrack to negatively interact with them.

One of the most common bowel disorders experienced by many Westerners, especially in the United States, is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Young adults are reported as being the most commonly affected with IBS and this is generally due or attributed to poor diet and lifestyle.

To solve (heal) a disease you must first know what the disease is followed by knowing its etiology (cause or origin). Basically, IBS is an inability to move the bowels and the solution to the problem is to simply move the bowels.

IBS is a disease or disorder of the intestinal tract in general, the colon in particular. Technically, IBS is a form of colitis (inflammation of the colon), called “mucous colitis,” inflammation of the colon caused by mucus.

Causes and Risk Factors

Processed foods lack enzymes and enzymes stimulate the natural function of peristalsis, the wavelike muscular contractions that produce bowel movements. IBS is a degenerative disease caused by improper diet.

The intestines consist of the small intestine and the large intestine (colon). The small intestine allows the body to absorb nutrients via the villi (small stringy hairs on the wall of the small intestine). The large intestine (colon) reabsorbs sufficient water so as to provide the proper consistency (and lubrication) for the stools to pass from the colon via the rectum.

In conditions of IBS, the stools (feces) are too hard (due to a lifeless- food diet consisting of dead, slaughtered animal flesh, a/k/a meat; processed cow snot and mucus, a/k/a dairy products; and refined grains and starches) which causes the production of excess mucus and plaque which dries up in the small intestine and colon and converts the stools into cement-like bricks (feces held together by mucoidal plaque). Because the diet lacks live foods, there is an absence of vital enzymes and fiber, which results in a lack of peristalsis which is necessary for bowel movement.

IBS would also indicate lack of necessary water (from drinking water) because water helps lubricate the intestines. The colon needs to be lubricated for the feces or stools to transit smoothly to and through the rectum. And because of the lack of necessary water content in the colon, the Body Intelligence derives needed water from the tissues of the body and sends it to the colon to help soften and liquefy the hardened stools (dried feces held together by mucoidal plaque); this is why diarrhea is present in IBS. It is the body’s way of assisting so as to help solve the problem. Diarrhea develops in people who have hardened stools which clogs the colon and causes constipation. Diarrhea is the body’s way of liquefying the stools or feces so as to help them be eliminated from the body.

Symptoms

The pain and discomfort associated with IBS is due to the body via the colon trying to pass or move dried bricks (hardened feces or stools).

This pain and discomfort can lead to emotional stress as the colon is connected to every part of the body, including the nervous system. The emotional center of the human body itself is located in the second chakra (Sacral Plexus) which is located above the belly (intestines). Therefore, colon problems will undoubtedly affect one’s emotions.

Healing IBS Naturally

The IBS healing process begins with a change of mind to a more a positive and healthy mind-state that can manufacture positive thoughts and ideas.

Colonics and enemas will greatly help heal and repair the intestinal tract. Colonics clean out the entire intestinal tract whereas enemas only clean out the rectum. However, both processes and procedures help.

People born under the astrological signs of Cancer and Virgo need to watch out for stomach and colon upsets as they are prone to problems of the stomach, abdomen, and intestines, especially Virgo.

Dietary Intervention

Sufferers of IBS should eliminate all meat, dairy, refined grains and starch products from their diet. These all break down inside the body into mucus and plaque and form mucoidal plaque within the colon. You may want to consider converting to a vegan lifestyle.

Eat more green leafy vegetables and fruit which are excellent sources of natural fiber and enzymes. Good foods to eat to help combat IBS include: papaya, mango, melons, plums and prunes, dates, raisins, and figs.

Drinking prune and/or plum juice (a cup per day, before bedtime) will greatly help peristalsis.

There are many good herbs for healing the intestines. Herbs good for IBS include all good-colon cleansing herbs such as: Cascara Sagrada, Senna, Buckthorn, Mandrake, Aloe Vera Resin, Bibitaki, Glucommanan, Bilwa, Rhubarb, Goldenseal Root, and Triphala.

To prevent griping from the use of one of the herbs supra, especially Senna, simply add Fennel Seed, Bladderwrack, Guar Gum and/or Psyllium Husk to the herb and mix it well.

Seaweeds such as Irish Moss, Bladderwrack, Kelp, Iceland Moss, and Dulse are great bulking and lubricating sources for the colon in addition to being nutritional in nature. The small intestine absorbs nutrients via the villi and this is why it is important to keep the walls of the intestines clean.

Graves’ Disease is an autoimmune disease that triggers overproduction of thyroid hormones. The disease causes a certain type of antibody to attach itself to cells in the thyroid. In layman’s terms, Grave’s Disease causes too much ‘thyroxin’, a hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

Causes and Risk Factors

The disease is said to be five times more common in women than in men. It occurs most frequently between ages 20 and 40. Risk factors include:

  • Genetics (family history)
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Other autoimmune disorders
  • Emotional stress
  • Physical stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking cigarettes

Symptoms

Typical signs of Grave’s disease include:

  • nervousness
  • a fine tremor of the hands
  • weight loss
  • fatigue
  • breathlessness
  • palpitations
  • heat intolerance
  • increased metabolic rate, and
  • gatro-intestinal motility

There may be an enlarged thymus, generalized hyperplasia of the lymph nodes, blurred or double vision, localized edema, and osteoporosis.

Natural Healing Solutions

All light-blue colored stones can also prove beneficial in healing from Grave’s Disease. These stones include:

  • Dolphin Stone (Larimar)
  • Blue lace Agate
  • Blue Calcite
  • Turquoise
  • Celesite
  • Blue Chalcedony
  • Angelite, and
  • Blue Kyanite

These stones/crystals can be applied directly over the thyroid gland area (over the skin), especially during a chakra balancing session.

Magnetic therapy can be especially helpful with Grave’s Disease. A powerful small-sized gauss magnet (2,500 – 14,000 g) can be applied over the thyroid gland via adhesive and worn during the daylight hours, or 12 hours on and 12 hours off.

Detox first and then take the three recommended Dherbs.com formulas (Thyroid, Sea Moss, and Electric Greens Cell Food) as a daily maintenance regimen.

Dietary Intervention

Grave’s Disease, like all other thyroid disorders, can be managed by supplying the body with high amounts of natural iodine, also known as iodine phosphate.

Seaweeds are the highest source and concentration of organic iodine. Available seaweeds that provide high amounts of iodine include:

Land herbs rich in natural iodine include:

Drink plenty of vegetable juice, especially green vegetables.

An all-raw foods and/or vegan diet will also facilitate the healing process. Abstain from eating meat, dairy products, refined grains, and refined starches as well as white table salt and white sugar.
