If you’ve perused the skin care aisle at any drugstore, you’ve seen bottles of toner. Typically a lightly-tinted or clear liquid, toner is a curious skin care product for many people. There are quite a few misconceptions about its purpose as well. Your reason for using toner depends on the type of skin you have. We are big fans of toner and what it can do for your skin. In this article we will explain how a toner benefits the skin, in addition to providing simple recipes for every skin type.

What Does A Face Toner Do?

Simply put, toner removes any traces of dirt, impurities, or grime that remain in your pores after cleansing. When you incorporate toner into your skin care routine and use it regularly, you can improve the tightness of pores and overall appearance of skin. Toner also works to restore the skin’s pH level and smooths it out by refining any rough patches.

Ideally, you want the skin to be at its natural pH as much as possible. The skin has an acid mantle, which is a protective layer on the surface, and it should sit around 5.5 pH. That is slightly acidic, but that is where the skin can function its best and renew itself. That said, toner doesn’t just help to balance the skin’s pH; rather, it also aids with:

 • Hydrating the skin: Spritzing toner on the skin helps to replenish moisture, but make sure to use it before moisturizing the skin.
 • Helping other skin care products sink in: Toners help prepare your skin to optimally absorb other products in your skin care routine.
 • Removing leftover dirt: Toners act like second cleansers, removing the remains of makeup and general grime that don’t get picked up when you wash your face
 • Making the skin appear smoother: Apply toner with a cotton round to remove the buildup of dead skin cells, which can make the skin appear smoother.

How To Make Your Own Toner

It is very easy to make a simple DIY toner for every skin type. If you’ve been looking for a simple toner that doesn’t upset your skin type, consider the following two-ingredient recipes. Let us know if one works for you in the comments below.

Toner For Sensitive Skin

One of the best ingredients for sensitive skin is rose water, which exhibits powerful antioxidant properties that balance the skin. Rose water also replenishes the skin with moisture and offers soothing properties, making it great for those with sensitive skin. Because of its gentle nature, rose water makes for a great DIY toner.

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup dried rose buds
 • Hot filtered water

Instructions:

 • Pour the hot water over the rose buds (enough to submerge them) and allow them to sit for one to two hours.
 • Use a strainer to separate the rose buds from the rose water. Pour the strained rose watering a spray bottle and use when needed.
 • Ideally, spritz your face with this rose water twice a day after cleansing. Just store it in the fridge and use it within seven to 10 days.

Toner For Dry Skin

If you have dry or dull skin, toner can help provide hydration. In the case of this recipe, the rose water helps to soothe the skin and even out skin tone.

Ingredients:

 • Rose water (see above recipe)
 • Geranium essential oil

Instructions:

 • Use the above recipe to make the rose water. Add three to five drops of geranium essential oil to the rose water and shake to combine.
 • Make sure to shake the bottle before each use. Store in the refrigerator and use within seven to 10 days.

Toner For Oily And Acne-Prone Skin

Green tea, just like rose water, is rich in powerful antioxidants. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and acne. The apple cider vinegar works to restore your skin’s pH level back to normal.

Ingredients:

 • 3/4 cup steeped green tea
 • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

 • After you steep the green tea bag in hot water, allow the tea to come to room temperature before discarding the tea bag. Pro tip: place the tea bag on your eye if you need to reduce puffiness
 • Pour the green tea and apple cider vinegar into a spray bottle, screw on the lid, and shake to combine.
 • To apply, you can either spritz the toner on your face or apply it to a cotton round and gently pat your face. Store it in the fridge and use it within 10 days.

If your hair is as feisty as your attitude, it may require a detangler so that you can brush it with ease. The last thing you want to do is aggressively rake a brush through your hair, pulling out hairs and hurting your scalp in the process. Brush or comb through your hair with ease when you use an all-natural detangler, like the recipe detailed in this article.

Why Make Your Own Detangler?

Not only is making your own detangler cost effective over time, but it also allows you to control the ingredients. Controlling the ingredients benefits you in two ways because you get to cater to your hair’s needs and avoid harmful chemicals. The average detangler that you find in the store contains some seriously problematic ingredients. Some of those ingredients are detailed below:

 • Dmdm Hydantoin: As an antibacterial formaldehyde releaser preservative, dmdm hydantoin is a known immune toxicant and allergen.
 • Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate: Strong evidence suggests that this human toxicant or allergen is also an environmental toxin.
 • Fragrance: When you see “fragrance” on a label, it means that the company doesn’t have to divulge what is in that signature blend. Typically, fragrances contain known immune system allergens or toxins.
 • Cetrimonium Chloride: This human skin toxicant or allergen, much like iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, is also a suspected environmental toxin.

After reading about all of those harmful ingredients, it makes sense to use natural ingredients that benefit the hair and skin. We’ll detail why the ingredients in this DIY detangler benefit your hair and skin below.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a common ingredient on the lists of many eco-friendly hair care products. It works to give your strands a restorative boost, repairing breakage, soothing the scalp, and controlling dandruff. Jojoba oil actually moisturizes your hair from the inside out, sitting on the surface of the hair shaft. This seals in moisture, even when your hair and scalp are damp after washing. Jojoba oil also promotes thickness, due to its impressive vitamin and mineral content. Vitamins C & E, B-vitamins, and the copper and zinc in jojoba oil not only strengthen your locks, but they also promote thickness and regrowth.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Why should you use apple cider vinegar in hair care products? Besides the researched health benefits, apple cider vinegar is an acidic substance, containing a good amount of acetic acid. Dull, brittle, or frizzy hair tends to be more alkaline or higher on the pH scale, so bringing an acidic substance into the equation can establish a healthier pH balance on the hair. Apple cider vinegar is also rich in alpha-hydroxy acid, which works to exfoliate the scalp and keep dandruff at bay because of its anti-inflammatory nature.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil works to fight against hair loss by increasing circulation to hair follicles. In doing so, lavender essential oil helps contribute to stronger, healthy-looking strands. A lot of people commonly mix lavender essential oil with a carrier oil and massage their hair and scalp to encourage hair growth. Lavender essential oil also works to deep condition your hair, hydrating your strands to help you avoid brittle or frizzy hair.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood essential oil is a common ingredient in both skin and hair care products. In cosmetics, cedarwood essential oil can help soothe inflammation and irritation on the skin. In hair care, cedarwood essential oil helps to cleanse the scalp, removing excess dirt, oily, and dry skin. It also promotes circulation to the scalp and tightens hair follicles, two actions that help stimulate hair growth. Preliminary studies show that cedarwood essential oil may also reduce thinning hair because it slows hair loss.

DIY Hair Detangler

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 ounce apple cider vinegar
 • 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil
 • 10 drops lavender essential oil
 • 10 drops cedarwood essential oil
 • 2-ounce glass spray bottle

Instructions:

 • Pour all of the ingredients into the glass spray bottle, screw on the top, and give it a good shake to combine.
 • Make sure that the bottle is glass and not plastic because essential oils can erode plastic. Additionally, an amber glass is truly the way to go when dealing with essential oils.
 • Shake before each use. Enjoy!

Boric Acid Suppositories For Vaginal Health https://www.dherbs.com/articles/boric-acid-suppositories-for-vaginal-health/ Sun, 30 Apr 2023 09:03:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=159594

There is some evidence that supports the use of boric acid suppositories to reduce itching, yeast infections, and to improve vaginal health.

Boric acid suppositories may be the cost-effective alternative treatment method you need to remedy vaginal infections, including bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. They can be prescribed by your healthcare provider as an alternative to traditional antibiotics, especially if that method doesn’t yield results. Boric acid suppositories are also available over-the-counter. This article discusses what boric acid suppositories are, what they may be able to treat, and the benefits and risks associated with them.

What Is Boric Acid?

Boric acid is a water-soluble compound that contains oxygen, boron, and hydrogen. It is a white substance that comes in crystal or powder form. According to research, boric acid exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Diluted boric acid solutions may be used to treat skin insect bites, athlete’s foot, foot odor, diaper rash, and yeast infections. Boric acid suppositories work to promote proper acid balance in the vagina. It may relieve symptoms like itching and burning.

Benefits Of Boric Acid Suppositories

As previously mentioned, boric acid exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Research indicates that when used appropriately, boric acid suppositories may reduce the risk of recurrent vaginal infections. At times, they may work more effectively than traditional medications, including antifungals that are typically prescribed to treat yeast infections. A 2011 review of 14 studies found that cure rates involving the use of boric acid varied between 40% and 100%. Based on the available research, researchers concluded that boric acid is a safe alternative and affordable option to other treatments. In some cases, boric acid suppositories may be recommended for:

 • Trichomoniasis
 • Yeast infections
 • Bacterial vaginosis

Boric Acid For Yeast Infections

According to several studies, boric acid suppositories may be very effective at treating yeast infections. Researchers note that this is especially true for yeast infections that are not caused by Candida albicans, the usual suspect of yeast infections. A review of studies found that boric acid suppositories are considered safe with only mild side effects. They did a reasonable job eliminating such non-albicans infections, curing between 40% and 100% of such yeast infections. Additionally, yeast infections were no more likely to recur after boric acid treatment than after use of standard antifungal drugs.

Boric Acid For Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is an imbalance in vaginal flora. Unfortunately, there is little evidence for the use of boric acid suppositories to treat bacterial vaginosis. That said, small studies suggest that boric acid may be effective when used alone or as a complementary therapy. In one study, about 77% of the participants reported feeling satisfied with how their symptoms resolved; however, the average treatment time was a little over one year.

Boric Acid For Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. The research that is available on boric acid suppositories as a treatment option is limited to small studies. Laboratory studies have shown that boric acid can effectively inhibit the growth of trichomonas bacteria. That supports the fact that boric acid suppositories may be an appropriate treatment option for the condition. That said, trichomonas has difficulty growing in acidic environments in lab settings. People who have a higher than healthy pH balance in the vagina tend to experience this condition more frequently. For infections that are hard to treat, consider discussing boric acid suppositories with your healthcare provider.

How To Use Boric Acid Suppositories

You always have the option of discussing the use of boric acid suppositories with your healthcare provider prior to using it as a treatment option. If you just want to try it on your own, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly. Use an applicator, or your finger, to insert one suppository into the vagina in the evening. You may want to wear a panty liner or washable period underwear in case of possible discharge.

Typical instructions for a yeast infection is to leave in the suppository overnight, inserting a new one each night for seven days. For recurring infections, insert one suppository per evening for 14 days, then continue to use for six months to a year twice weekly. Most boric acid suppositories are available at drugstores or online.

Side Effects

Boric acid suppositories are generally safe for adults, but minor side effects can occur. Tell your healthcare provider about other medications or supplements you take because they may or may not interact with the suppository. Don’t ever take boric acid suppositories orally and do not use them if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. The most common side effects include:

 • Burning at the insertion site
 • Vaginal irritation
 • Suppository leaking out and not fully absorbing
 • Redness in the vaginal area
 • Watery discharge
 • Harm to fetus (if pregnant)

]]>

As if childhood, puberty, and adolescence weren’t enough, the vagina, and the surrounding area, change as you age. Sadly, these changes aren’t the most-discussed topics, meaning that women may be unprepared for the realities of aging lady flowers. We want you to be prepared for the effects Father Time has on the body, even the vulva and vagina.

During your late 20s and 30s, progesterone and estrogen course through your system. Higher estrogen levels can cause vaginal changes like more discharge. It’s also more common for the first pregnancy to take place between the 20s and 30s, which can affect how the vagina looks and feels. Estrogen levels can fluctuate after pregnancy and during breastfeeding, leading to uncomfortable vaginal dryness. These estrogen changes are typically temporary, but they can cause unfamiliar changes to the vagina. Read on to learn about the other ways the vagina can change as you age.

The Vulva Changes

It’s important to note that, while closely connected, the vagina and vulva are two different things. The vulva is the outside, and the vagina is the canal. The reason for this clarification is because women often talk about their vagina, when in reality they mean their vulva, the lips, labia majora, labia minora, urethra, or clitoris. The vulva doesn’t really change from your late teens to your 40s, and even into your 50s. At some point, women can experience vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) that results from the gradual loss of estrogen that comes with perimenopause and menopause. The tissue can become paler and smoother, while the labia can become less distinct. This natural process is nothing to freak out about, though.

You May Experience Vaginal Dryness

A healthy vagina is well-lubricated, but you may develop vaginal dryness as you age. As estrogen levels decline, the vagina can become dryer because estrogen helps maintain moisture in the vaginal lining. When levels are low, the vagina walls become thinner and dryer, according to health professionals. During your lifetime, there are three main hormonal assaults on the body that cause estrogen levels to fall: breastfeeding, perimenopause, and menopause. In those periods when vaginal tissues lack lubrication, it’s possible to experience discomfort in the vagina, soreness in the vulva, burning or itching, bleeding after sex due to tears in vaginal walls, needing to pee more often, and not wanting to have sex.

The Hair May Change Down There

The graying and thinning of hair down in the vaginal region is quite common as you age. What you may not know is that it’s common to lose hair. According to experts, just like any other hair on the body, pubic hair starts to thin out and disappear during and after different hormonal stages in life. During menopause, the hair may grow slower and will be less thick. Medical conditions and the use of certain medications, both of which come with age, can thin out pubic hair. The new appearance may take some time to get used to, but you may find that it’s more convenient to have fewer hairs down there.

The Vagina Itself Can Change

While VVA affects the vulva, it can also affect the vagina. The loss of estrogen can dramatically change the appearance and function of the vagina. It’s very possible for the vaginal opening to shrink, and so can the length of the vaginal canal. Additionally, you may also experience frequent irritation, which results from the thinning of vaginal walls. According to surveys, about 20-50% of women start to notice changes, especially during sex because it can be more painful. Sex itself isn’t the main culprit of itchiness, though. Some women experience itchiness when walking or doing exercise. Fortunately, there are many moisturizers and lubricants that can provide temporary relief for that discomfort.

You May Develop Varicose Veins

Those bigger, bluish veins that tend to crop up in the legs as you age can also occur near the vulvar region. Although varicose veins mainly occur in the feet and legs, they can also surface near the vulva. Prominent veins can pop up during pregnancy because of the boost in blood flow to the pelvic area. That causes the veins to bulge, according to health experts. Other risk factors for vulvar varicosities include standing for long periods of time and obesity, both of which increase pressure on the veins in the lower body.

You May Be More Prone To Vaginal Infections

The vagina is normally acidic, which is the right pH balance for the protective organisms that live in harmony down there. Anything that disrupts that delicate balance can increase the risk of vaginal infection. As we’ve covered in this article, change is inevitable with age. That means that the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause can disturb the vagina’s microbiome. This disturbance can lead to vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.

When it comes to aging gracefully, the simplest solutions are the most effective. Anti-aging creams and serums that promise a youthful appearance, but they don’t always work. Or, it’s possible that these products are effective, but you aren’t doing the extra steps to maximize the anti-aging efforts. According to experts, though, the answer to a more youthful glow over the years flows freely from your faucet.

Water, believe it or not, is incredibly effective at helping you age with ease. Not only does it work to transport nutrients to cells, but it also regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints. A person who consumes plenty of water tends to be more alkaline, wrinkle-free, and free of toxins. Additionally, water helps to improve skin elasticity and even support memory function, an integral aspect of health in old age.

Get a glass of water first thing in the morning, before you eat anything and before you drink another beverage. Older adults are more prone to dehydration, so experts believe that drinking more water may support healthy aging. Continue reading to learn more about how increasing your water intake, especially in the morning, can help you age gracefully.

Reduces Wrinkles

It doesn’t need to be said, but we’ll say it anyway: Water hydrates the body. In doing so, you can help maintain skin elasticity, which may reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars, and wrinkles. As you grow older, these signs are more noticeable, so drinking more water may help you fight back. Additionally, water works to remove toxins from the body, helping you clear up pores on the epidermis.

Supports Memory Function

The more you tax the body, the more the body’s organs have to work. If your heart, liver, kidneys, and more have to work harder, it has a taxing effect on the brain. Failure to drink a sufficient amount of water means that the body cannot flush out urea, which can lead to cognitive issues like disorientation and confusion. Starting your day with water helps to get the body out of a dehydrated state. In fact, sipping water first thing in the morning has been associated with better short- and long-term memory.

Contributes To Healthier Skin

Many studies indicate that increasing your water intake can improve the appearance and health of the skin. The skin contains about 30% water, which works to keep it plump and resilient. A study from 2015 found that drinking more water has a positive effect on the skin’s physiology. It helped the skin appear youthful and more hydrated, especially in people who typically drank less water. Another study from 2018 found that drinking more water improved the hydration of the skin’s outer layer. Researchers noted that sufficient water intake may not offset the effects that the environment, genetics, and sun have on the skin.

Protects Your Heart

A recent 2021 study was presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2021. Researchers of the study concluded that sufficient hydration may delay or help changes in the heart that contribute to heart failure. The body cannot operate efficiently if it does not get the nutrients it needs. This is especially true for water. It stands to reason, then, that staying hydrated improves the health of your ticker.

Improves pH Balance

The pH of any substance ranges from 0-14, with 0 being extremely acidic and 14 being very basic. A pH value of 7 is considered neutral, and that is the exact pH value of pure water. Alkaline water has a higher pH, typically ranging from 8.5-9.5, or somewhere in that neighborhood. Increasing your water intake helps your skin maintain a healthy pH balance. A balanced pH level in the skin helps you avoid early signs of aging.

Removes Toxins

If you fail to drink water, toxins like urea accumulate in the body. According to researchers, excess urea can interfere with regular bodily functions. Additionally, urea may negatively affect your electrolyte balance. As you can see, this damaging domino effect that stems from electrolyte imbalance can result in delirium, which causes the person to experience severe confusion. This chain reaction can lead to urinary tract infections and more. Drink water to stabilize electrolyte levels and to flush out your bladder.

The post 3 Reasons Why Coffee May Be Causing Nausea appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

For many people, the morning isn’t complete without a warm cup of coffee. Tea can be comforting and necessary in certain circumstance, but it doesn’t compare to the dark, divine liquid. Coffee is a popular beverage that’s beloved for the boost in energy that it provides. While people know the side effects of too much coffee, what about the harmful effects that occur after drinking one cup?

Coffee, by its very nature, is acidic. On the pH scale, coffee registers in the range of 4.5 to 5.5. In fact, the acids in coffee provide the rich and robust flavors. Under the right circumstances, the acidity can lead to feelings of nausea, acid reflux, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Additionally, caffeine is a stimulant that encourages the digestive system to work faster than normal. This also increases the production of more stomach acid than is necessary. By stimulating the stomach, especially when it’s empty, you can easily experience nausea.

Abdominal Distress

Whether you believe it or not, coffee is one of the primary causes of acid reflux and heartburn. Caffeine stimulates the release of gastrin and the secretion of gastric acid. This is most common when you drink coffee in the morning on an empty stomach. Upon entering the stomach, the coffee induces abdominal distress and creates the feeling of nausea. The acids in coffee can also make you feel dizzy, and irritation of the stomach lining can increase feelings of nausea. The best way to avoid these feelings is by drinking water in the morning. Follow that tall glass of H2O with a nutritious breakfast to reduce the chance of feeling nauseous from coffee.

You Take Certain Medications

Disclaimers to numerous medications state that nausea is a common side effect. It’s also possible for coffee to induce that effect when you take medication along with it. Antibacterial drugs (like Cipro), antidepressants (like MAOIs), and asthma medications (like theophylline and albuterol) have negative interactions with the caffeine in coffee. The caffeine-medication interaction regularly causes nausea, according to registered dietitians. If you do take medication, be sure to check the label to ensure that it doesn’t have any food interactions.

You Have Acid Reflux

As mentioned earlier, the acidic pH of coffee means that it can trigger acid reflux. The stomach is an acidic environment, and increasing the acidity can cause an array of gastrointestinal troubles. The acids in coffee can cause acid reflux, heartburn, and bloating, according to many dietitians. These symptoms occur because stomach acid backs up in the esophagus as a result of a relaxed gastroesophageal sphincter, which is the opening at the bottom of the esophagus where food empties into the stomach. If you have acid reflux, be mindful of this information when you drink your morning cup of joe.

In order to curb the potential nauseating effects of coffee, there are healthy steps you can take. Follow the steps below and you should be able to avoid coffee-induced nausea.

Drink Low-Acid Coffee

Dark roasts, decaf coffee, espresso, and cold brew all fall under the umbrella of low-acid coffee. These coffee varieties are much gentler on the stomach and help you avoid the nauseous feeling you dread.

Drink Coffee With Food

Food is the buffer your stomach needs for your morning coffee. It has the same effect on medication, helping to reduce nausea. Avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach, especially if you’re prone to upset stomach or acid reflux. Instead, drink your coffee with a meal because the calcium in food works to neutralize both the acidity of coffee and stomach acid

During the pandemic, many people started experimenting with all sorts of DIY hair care remedies. Can we be honest and say we chuckled at the many hair fail videos we watched? In addition to the hair fails, there were many successful hair growth stories. People researched all sorts of DIY hair treatments, masks, leave-in conditioners, and rinses to improve hair growth. Some of the most successful results came from apple cider vinegar hair rinses.

Apple cider vinegar hair rinses are not new to the DIY beauty game. In fact, apple cider vinegar rinses have been used by DIY beauty enthusiasts for quite some time. According to claims and anecdotes from online beauty personalities, apple cider vinegar hair rinses help to enhance curls, strengthen hair follicles, improve shine, and encourage scalp health. Without a healthy scalp, your chances of increasing hair growth are very slim.

Using Apple Cider Vinegar For Hair Growth

It’s important to note that apple cider vinegar is not a cure for hair loss. Several studies indicated that apple cider vinegar rinses help to remove product buildup on the scalp, which can clog hair follicles, increase dandruff, and get in the way of optimal hair growth. According to certified dermatologists, the acetic and alpha-hydroxy acids in apple cider vinegar degrease and cleanse the scalp. When you regularly cleanse the scalp, you can possibly reduce the amount of hair strands you lose on a daily basis.

Improve Your Scalp’s pH

Apple cider vinegar contains a healthy amount of acetic acid, making it an acidic substance. The ideal pH level of your hair and scalp is between 4 and 5, but commercial shampoos and hair care products often disrupt that natural balance. According to a 2014 study, many shampoos on the beauty market were found to contribute to hair friction, loss, and dryness. These negatives were attributed to the high alkalinity. Normally, people strive for internal alkalinity because the average person is acidic, due to the consumption of unhealthy foods in the Western diet. The scalp needs to be slightly acidic for optimal hair health, though. Apple cider vinegar works to lower the scalp’s pH level, which helps to make brittle or frizzy hair look a lot healthier.

If you have a dry or itchy scalp, or you regularly experience dandruff, apple cider vinegar may be the right remedy for you. Some dermatologists advocate the use of apple cider vinegar on the scalp because it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It works to combat fungal or yeast growth on the scalp and can even get rid of dead skin cell accumulation. If you want to start reaping the benefits of apple cider vinegar, start using the hair rinse below.
