In skin care products, there are two types of ingredients: the high-tech, lab-made molecules, and natural ingredients from plants. Honey falls under the latter category and it’s been used for both medicinal and beauty applications for thousands of years. Ancient Sumerian tablets indicate that humans used honey in cosmetics as early as 2100 BC. It’s fair to say, then, that honey is one of the oldest natural skin care ingredients.

What Is Manuka Honey?

There are many types of honey, with one of the most prized varieties being Manuka honey. This semi-opaque, creamy honey is made from the nectar of the Manuka plant. Native to New Zealand and Australia, the Manuka bush blooms small whitish pink flowers. Most honey that you purchase is made from a variety of different flower nectars, but Manuka honey is exclusively crafted from Manuka flowers. Because of that distinction, Manuka honey has a rich golden hue and high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. In fact, various studies confirm that Manuka honey has a higher pH and sugar content than other honeys, and researchers believe that those attributes enhance the antibacterial activity

The Antibacterial Properties

In the late 1800s, researchers discovered that honey contains glucose oxidase, an enzyme that converts sugar into a mild, bleach-like antiseptic you probably have at home: hydrogen peroxide. What makes Manuka honey so valuable is that in addition to hydrogen peroxide, it contains methylglyoxal. This compound is an even stronger antibacterial agent than hydrogen peroxide. Some studies suggest that it may fight against strong bacteria like Staphylococcus or E.coli. What does that mean for your skin? The antibacterial activity in Manuka honey may help combat blemishes, infections, and even impetigo.

Keeps Skin Hydrated And Soft

Honey is probably not the first ingredient you think of in regards to moisturizing the skin. Manuka honey may be very effective at battling dry, cracked skin because it exhibits emollient and humectant properties. Emollients fill the spaces between the cracks to promote softer skin, whereas humectants draw moisture from the air into the skin to boost hydration. Manuka honey is also useful for fighting flaky skin and general irritation, both of which are symptoms of dry or dehydrated skin.

May Reduce Signs Of Aging

Manuka honey exhibits anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which work to fight bacteria and promote healing. Additionally, Manuka honey provides optimal moisture, which is vital if you want to reduce signs of aging. Dry and cracked skin is more prone to wrinkles, discoloration, age spots, and fine lines. The antioxidants in Manuka honey also promote healing and may even enhance collagen production, which keeps the skin looking younger. Plus, the bleach-like qualities from the hydrogen peroxide in Manuka honey may help clear up skin discolorations.

Manuka Honey Body Butter

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Put the coconut butter, coconut oil, and shea butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Keep on the heat until fully melted.
  • Remove from the heat and pour the mixture into a heat-safe bowl. Allow the mixture to sit until it is opaque. You can accelerate this process by putting the mixture in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
  • Once the mixture is ready, use a hand mixer to whip it up. Add the Manuka honey and continue whipping with the hand mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Transfer the body butter to a glass container and store in the fridge until ready to use.

Scalp dandruff, although a drag and slightly embarrassing, is not unusual. What may take you by surprise is if dry flakes regularly fall from your eyebrows. Yes, eyebrow dandruff is a thing, according to certified dermatologists. It is one of the most common symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis, but other causes can also lead to eyebrow dandruff.

Symptoms Of Eyebrow Dandruff

More often than not, eyebrow dandruff is not the only symptom you experience. Inflammation in the eyebrow area, itchiness, or rash can occur, and you may require an over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication to fix the issue. The most common symptoms of eyebrow dandruff include:

  • Light, white to yellowish flakes of skin that shed
  • Mild itching (although itching is not always a symptom)
  • Eyebrows that appear scaly
  • Mild erythema (redness) and irritated patches of skin on the eyebrows
  • An increased amount of sebum (oil) in the eyebrows

Note, eyebrow dandruff can be the result of environmental factors like cold weather or harsh skin products. When environmental factors cause eyebrow dandruff, symptoms don’t usually include inflammation. When seborrheic dermatitis or contact dermatitis are the underlying causes, inflammation is a primary symptom. Read on to figure out what your body is trying to tell you if you experience eyebrow dandruff.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a reaction on the skin that is caused by irritants or allergens. Ingredients in skin or hair-care products can often cause irritation, meaning contact dermatitis responsible. Fragrances in detergent or makeup products can trigger this scaly skin reaction, but you may not see the symptom surface for a day or two following exposure. Contact dermatitis can cause an itchy, irritating rash in the area and the skin may flake off, causing dandruff. If contact dermatitis is the culprit of eyebrow dandruff, you may also experience dry or cracked skin, bumps and blisters, or swelling/tenderness in the area.

Dry Skin

Good ole dry skin can often be the source of scaly brows. It is easy to mistake dry skin near the eyebrows for dandruff, but the truth may be that your skin just lacks moisture. Unlike eczema or psoriasis, which stem from an inflammatory response in the immune system, dry skin in the eyebrow region is a common symptom of those living in areas with low humidity or cold weather. If you try to use lotions or creams to remedy dry skin and still experience flakiness, you may need to consult a dermatologist to get a definitive answer.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes skin cells to grow at an accelerated rate, resulting in thick patches of itchy, red, scaly skin. Although the condition commonly affects the knees, elbows, scalp, and trunk, it may appear on other parts of the body, like your face. Experts believe that this inflammatory issue is caused by an overactive immune system. Irregular immune function can indicate why you see an influx of flakes that accumulate on the skin’s surface.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common form of eczema and usually shows itself as dandruff or rash on certain parts of the body that produce a lot of oil. The upper back, nose, and scalp are fairly common areas to experience symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis causes irritated patches of skin and inflammation, but it can also cause flare-ups near the eyebrows. Wherever it shows up, seborrheic dermatitis stems from an overblown inflammatory immune response to an overgrowth of Malassezia, a common type of yeast that lives on the skin.

New to the world of homemade beauty products? The homemade hand cream in this article is the perfect entry point, especially if soaps and body butters seem out of reach at the moment. If you make soap or lotion, you may already have the ingredients in the hand cream, which is quite thick and balm-like. It effortlessly melts on the skin, which absorbs the nourishing elements within a few minutes.

The skin on your hands and your face is constantly exposed to the elements, yet you neglect your hands more than your face. You don’t apply sunscreen to your hands or palms, and you probably don’t cover them in makeup either. The skin on your hands is quite different from the skin on other areas of the body. The middle layer of skin (the dermis) connects to the outer layer (epidermis) through many papillae, which are connective tissue. Rows of papillae form ridges that make up your finger and handprints, but they also help protect the skin on your hands from tearing.

The skin on the back of your hands is much thinner, with hardly any fatty tissue. Because of that, sebum production is very low, making it harder for your hands to hold moisture. This is why it is very common for your hands to dry out quickly. For this reason, you are responsible for moisturizing them, especially if you don’t want them to appear wrinkly and dry.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, specifically lauric acid, which exhibit antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. This is just one reason to incorporate coconut oil into your skin care routine. Coconut oil also exhibits emollient properties, which work to repair the skin barrier’s function, helping your body defend against environmental threats. Forming a protective layer that sits on top of the skin, coconut oil helps lock moisture into the skin, while also preventing transepidermal water loss.

Mango Butter

Mango butter is the substance that results from cold-pressing the fats from mango pits. The creamy butter is a great ingredient to use on the skin and hair. Mango butter has a semi-solid consistency, but quickly melts into the skin without making you feel greasy. Similar to coconut oil, mango butter provides a protective layer on the skin, preventing bacteria and environmental chemicals from entering your pores. Mango butter also contains nutrients that may promote skin repair. According to one study, a foot cream made with mango butter was able to completely repair cracked skin in human volunteers.

Olive Oil

In addition to being a great addition to your diet, olive oil is a wonderful ingredient to add to your skin care routine. If you suffer from dry skin, you can rub a small amount of olive oil into the dry area, cover it with plastic wrap for a couple hours, and then notice smoother skin. Olive oil also exhibits antibacterial properties that may help to accelerate the healing of cuts and burns. Mix it with essential oils, healing herbs, coconut oil, or beeswax to enhance its healing properties.

Beeswax

Different civilizations have used beeswax for centuries, specifically for the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Beeswax is a great moisturizer suitable for people with all skin types, including the most sensitive skin. Additionally, beeswax is a humectant, meaning it attar’s water molecules from the air. That helps to keep your skin hydrated over time. Just like coconut oil and mango butter, beeswax forms a protective barrier on the skin, preventing it from environmental assaults, moisturizing the skin in the process.

Nourishing Hand Cream

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces coconut oil
  • 1.75 ounces mango butter
  • 1 ounce olive oil
  • 0.125 ounces beeswax pellets

Instructions:

  • Add an inch or so of water to the bottom of a double boiler and place over medium-high heat. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and place the top on.
  • Melt the coconut oil, mango butter, and beeswax in the top of the double boiler. Once the ingredients are melted, stir in the olive oil and then remove from heat.
  • Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature until solidified (about four hours or overnight). You can also transfer the mixture into a bigger bowl and allow it to solidify in there, as you will need to whip the final product with a hand mixer.
  • Using an electric hand mixer, whip the solidified mixture until fluffy. This may take about 10 minutes.
  • Store in a clean container at room temperature. If temperatures exceed 80º F where you store it, it will most likely melt.

To clarify, you should not eat the body butter in this article, despite the fact that it looks like whipped cream. We felt like that was a necessary warning because it smells enchanting and has a fluffy, luxurious texture. It will taste gross, so please resist the temptation if it strikes.

Body butters are water-free skin care options that help to enhance moisture levels in the skin. Surprisingly, you don’t need to use a lot to in order to moisturize the skin. There’s no comparison between a run-of-the-mill lotion and a DIY body butter. The reason for this is because lotions typically contain 70% – 80% water and about 5%- 10% of moisturizing butters and oils. Lotions are lightweight and tend to soak into the skin quickly, while body butters take longer to soak in. This helps your skin feel moisturized for a lot longer.

The concentration of oils, butters, and other botanicals in body butters gives them a denser consistency. There’s no need for emulsifiers that are commonly in lotions to increase thickness. You can also whip body butters to make them light and fluffy. It feels much more pleasant and hydrating when you apply a body butter on the skin versus applying a lotion. Plus, people who have dry or cracked skin have more success with skin repair when using body butters.

Why Use Shea Butter?

Shea butter has potent anti-inflammatory properties that may help to relieve irritated or itchy skin. Because the body can easily and quickly absorb shea butter, it’s a beneficial ingredient for people with eczema. In fact, a lot of research indicates that shea butter may be as effective at reducing flare-ups as medicated creams. Shea butter is one of the most non-clogging and non-comedogenic cosmetic butters on the market. The natural fatty acid, vitamin, and antioxidant content helps your skin retain moisture and shine. It’s soft, pure, and free of additives, making it the perfect base for a body butter.

Why Use Rosemary?

Rosemary has a variety of uses outside the kitchen, especially for the hair and skin. It has an earthy, herbaceous aroma that’s quite soothing, which is why rosemary essential oil is popular in aromatherapy practices. Rosemary has been known to assist in protecting the skin from sun damage. Some studies found that applying a cream with rosemary extract helped prevent acne breakouts. Rosemary is beneficial for people with oily skin because it helps decongest it and acne without causing dryness. It works best when you infuse it with carrier oils like almond oil. We’ll explain how to do that in the recipe below.

Homemade Rosemary Body Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of unrefined shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil
  • Needles from two rosemary branches
  • 20 drops rose essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

  • Place the shea butter, coconut oil, and almond oil and rosemary needles in a double boiler over low heat. Allow the butter and oils to melt, stirring occasionally.
  • Once everything is melted, keep the mixture over low heat for two hours. This will allow the rosemary to infuse into the shea butter and oil mixture.
  • Strain the rosemary from the oil by pouring it through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl.
  • Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about one to two hours, or until it is firm, but not completely solid.
  • If you are using the essential oil, add that in when you remove the partially solidified oil mixture from the fridge.
  • Use an electric hand mixer to whip the mixture into a fluffy body butter. This should take a couple minutes or so.
  • Spoon the body butter into jars and store them in a cool, dry place. It’s best to use body butter within five minutes of exiting a shower. This will help lock in as much moisture as possible.

Olive oil is a pantry staple in many households. It’s a healthy dietary component that people use in numerous culinary applications. The same properties of olive oil that benefit the body internally, may also contribute to better skin health. In fact, olive oil may help to provide relief from sun damage, combat dry skin, and protect against environmental damage.

What Is Olive Oil?

People make olive oil by pressing olives and expressing their oil. The rich monounsaturated fatty acid and antioxidant content makes olive oil a healthy addition to diets and skin care regimens. Manufacturers regularly incorporate plant oils like olive oil into cosmetic products because of its many health benefits. Olive oil is a high-performing plant oil that has moisturizing and emollient properties. You can easily damage olive oil with excessive heat, light and the addition of oxygen, so store it in a cool area with the cap on tight.

Helps Repair Damaged Skin Tissues

The skin is the largest organ in the body that protects the body from external harm, including sun damage. What protects the skin from these threats, though? It’s your responsibility to take good care of the skin and protect it. Olive oil has regenerative that may help repair skin tissues that the sun damages. The antioxidant activity is most effective in areas where cracked skin exists, for example, on the elbows and knees. It’s also possible for olive oil to protect against inflammation, environmental damage, and general irritation.

It May Accelerate Wound Healing

Olive oil contains triterpenes, specifically erythrodiol, uvaol, and maslinic acid. They exhibit cardioprotective activity, antitumoral activity, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These triterpenes are especially beneficial for wound healing, cell proliferation, cell migration, and collagen deposition. In simpler terms, olive oil may enhance the body’s ability to repair wounds at a much quicker rate.

Helps Prevent Water Loss

Olive oil is an emollient with occlusive properties, meaning that it helps to seal moisture into the skin. Extra virgin olive oil, specifically, has nourishing properties that encourage optimal skin hydration. The vitamin A, E, and K content help to moisturize even the most sensitive of skin types. Olive oil works to lock moisture into the skin by increasing the skin’s natural water content. This not only improve the general health of the skin, but also keeps it looking healthy and smooth.

Helps Remove Makeup

When people apply makeup and then take it off, it’s very common to experience dry skin. The reason for this is because some makeup removal products contain aggressive surfactants, which increase dryness and sensitivity. There are some cleansing soaps that effectively and safely remove makeup, but they can be hard to find. To remove traces of sunscreen and makeup, use olive oil because it emulsifies with those products on the skin. That aids with their complete removal when you wipe the skin with reusable pads or a warm washcloth. When you massage olive oil on the face in circular motions, you’ll see it start to emulsify with the traces of makeup or sunscreen.

It May Combat Aging

Aging is a natural part of life, but external factors and unhealthy habits can accelerate this process. The high polyphenol content in extra virgin olive oil may help combat the aging process. Dermatologists believe that the antioxidant activity helps to fight free radical formation, which can contribute to the aging of cells. Olive oil also combats the harmful effects of ultraviolet damage from sun rays. Applying it to the skin may not only lighten sun spots, but also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes.

Olive oil is an excellent product to add to your skin care regimen, but it’s best to purchase extra virgin olive oil. Regular olive oil is often a blend that includes both cold-pressed and processed oils. Extra virgin olive oil is made from pure, cold-pressed olives, meaning you get the nutrients directly from the olives.

The feet spend most of their time confined in socks and shoes. Needless to say that they are removed from fresh air and the natural world. That’s all the more reason to give them some undivided attention and love at the end of the day. After a pleasant dinner, give yourself a quick foot massage and moisturize them with an all natural foot butter. They’ll absorb all of the hydrating ingredients overnight and feel refreshed in the morning.

This foot butter contains four simple ingredients. We don’t have time to waste on unhealthy chemicals, additives, or anything else that detracts from core, beneficial ingredients. In the case of this recipe, three of the ingredients will revive your feet. The peppermint essential oil has nourishing properties, but it’s mainly in this recipe for the scent and cooling factor. Coconut oil, shea butter, and avocado oil are the real heroes of this recipe.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a great source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. While it is a common and healthy oil for culinary applications, it also has a place in natural skin care routines. The skin easily absorbs this oil, which is helpful for anyone who needs to maintain moisture. The antioxidants help to enhance smoothness by improving elasticity. Avocado oil also works to replenish moisture, protect from damage, and heal chapped or cracked skin.

Coconut Oil

Not only does coconut oil encourage thicker hair, but it also helps promote healthier skin. If you need to encourage deep hydration to your feet, coconut oil is the ingredient for you. Coconut oil works to restore, repair, and moisturize cracked heels or dry feet. Leaving coconut oil on feet overnight is one of the best ways to allow the skin to absorb the essential fatty acids. It’s also easy for calluses to develop on the soles of your feet, especially the heels and balls. If you engage in strenuous activity, or you job requires you to stand all day, moisturize with coconut oil at night to prevent calluses from cracking.

Shea Butter

Why should you use shea butter for cracked heels? We can give you a long list of reasons because shea butter is just that amazing. The anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce dryness and redness that are all too common in people with dry or cracked feet. If you’ve experienced cracked heels, you know how uncomfortable it can be to walk on them. Shea butter’s essential fatty acids also encourage moisture retention, helping you avoid flakiness and dryness. Lastly, the linolenic, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids promote healing and optimal hydration, while warding off dryness and cracks.

DIY Mint Foot Butter

Ingredients:

  • 100 grams coconut oil
  • 150 grams shea butter
  • 30 milliliters avocado oil
  • 5 ml peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil and shea butter to a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until they are soft.
  • You can also add these two ingredients to a stand mixer (like a Kitchen Aid mixer) and mix until soft.
  • Add the avocado oil and peppermint essential oil and continue to mix until it becomes soft and fluffy. Scrape down the sides with a spatula midway through mixing to fully incorporate all the ingredients.
  • Spoon this foot butter into containers and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Apply to your feet at night and place socks over your feet while you sleep. This will promote optimal hydration.

Nobody wants to be the person with dry or chapped lips. You could be having the best day ever, feeling yourself and jamming out to your favorite song. Then you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and notice the flakiness on your lips. Horrified, you scramble in search of any chapstick or lip balm to remedy the situation. Then the sweet relief of hydration on your lips makes everything so much better.

What if you didn’t have to rely on a specific lip balm to moisturize your lips? Sometimes, it’s possible that chapsticks and lip balms can sting your lips when the chemicals enter the cracks. You can avoid all that by using natural oils to promote long-lasting moisture. Natural oils work with the body’s chemistry to repair dry lips and create a protective moisture barrier.

Now, there is one thing you need to know before we continue. Some of the following oils are essential oils, and you cannot simply apply them to your lips. Essential oils are very pungent and need to be diluted in a carrier oil so that you don’t have an adverse reaction on the skin. Additionally, make sure to do a small batch test on your arm prior to applying the mixture to your lips. Wait 24-48 hours to see if you have a reaction before you use it as a lip moisturizer. Some great carrier oils to consider are jojoba oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and extra virgin olive oil.

Great Natural Oils For Luscious Lips

Olive Oil

This magnificent carrier oil is rich in healthy fats and offers wonderful moisturizing properties for the skin. The vitamin E content promotes healthy collagen production, while the anti-inflammatory properties help prevent lips from chapping. You can apply olive oil to your lips on its own, or you can mix it with some of the essential oils in this article.

Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Are your lips in need of some TLC? If you answered “yes” to that question, it’s time to bust out some rose geranium essential oil. Working to moisturize dry, aggravated, or cracked skin, this essential oil is a great alternative to store bought lip balms. In fact, this oil is a common ingredient in commercial lip balms. You can hydrate lips by mixing a few drops of rose geranium essential oil with a teaspoon of coconut oil, and then applying that to your lips.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil contains a plethora of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins. When it comes to the antioxidants, the carotenoids and lutein stand out. These compounds work to protect the lips from developing fine lines, wrinkles, cracking, and other signs of aging. Avocado oil also contains vitamin C, which is necessary for collagen formation and skin hydration.

Frankincense Essential Oil

This popular essential oil contributes to softer, smoother skin. In case you didn’t know, that’s great news for anyone who frequently experiences dry or chapped lips. Frankincense essential oil has notoriety in the skin care world, offering healing properties to a variety of skin conditions. Enhance the benefits by mixing 15 drops of frankincense essential oil, 15 drops of lavender essential oil, and one tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply that mixture to the lips and you’ll experience long-lasting moisture.

Sweet Almond Oil

Just like coconut oil, sweet almond oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids that revitalize and nourish the skin. The vitamin E and B content, water, essential proteins, and antioxidants work to soothe scaly or cracking lips. Sweet almond oil is known for its ability to reduce dark spots after long term application, but it also does wonders to improve the appearance of your lips.

Camellia Oil

This nourishing carrier oil comes from the camellia flower. According to several studies, the oil that the flower produces helps to slow the signs of aging, but it also makes lips appear fuller. The reason it can do this is because it helps to improve collagen synthesis. If you need to moisturize and contribute to plumper lips, look no further than camellia oil.

Dry skin that you’ve never witnessed in your life has come about as a result of all this hand washing. Obviously, staying safe is necessary, but you need an effective moisturizer to counteract the dryness.

When the skin starts to dry out, it becomes prone to cracking, peeling, or premature signs of aging. If you don’t address the dryness, it becomes harder and harder to repair the damaged, dry skin. Additionally, open wounds like cracked skin can increase your risk of contracting the virus. Don’t let your skin crack when you can easily use natural ingredients to help it retain moisture.

Shea Butter For Moisture

Shea butter comes from the seeds of the Shea or Karite tree. The butter is rich in essential fatty acids and nutrients that enhance collagen production and offer mild protection against UV rays. Due to the high concentration of natural vitamins, Shea butter has risen to popularity for its moisturizing properties. When you apply Shea butter to the skin, it helps protect the natural oils, and the linolenic, palmitic, oleic, and stearic acids help to prevent drying.

Sweet Almond Oil For Moisture

Almond oil comes in both sweet and bitter varieties, but sweet almond oil is popular in DIY beauty regimens. Considered to be an emollient, sweet almond oil helps the skin retain moisture as opposed to adding more moisture. Moisturizers supply the skin with water and hold it in with an oil-like substance, whereas emollients fill in the gaps and soothe dry skin. This is why people with dermatitis and eczema commonly use sweet almond oil.

Beeswax For Moisture

Beehives produce beeswax, but that is an oversimplification of the process. Worker bees produce the wax and hive workers collect it to form cells that store honey. Beeswax has many uses in skin care regimens because it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that soothe, protect, and moisturize the skin. When applied to the skin, beeswax holds moisture to help you avoid dry skin. It is also a humectant, meaning it attracts water to help your skin remain soft and hydrated.

It seems as though “wash your hands,” “stay at home,” and “keep your distance” are the only things being said nowadays. Diligent hand washing is one of the most effective ways to keep germs away, but all this hand washing can take a toll on your skin. As if the dropping stocks, Safer At Home laws, and crazed toilet paper hoarders weren’t enough, now you have to worry about really dry hands.

Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that people should scrub hands with antibacterial soap and water for 20 seconds per wash. When soap and water are not available, people are encouraged to use hand sanitizers, but these aren’t as effective at getting rid of germs. The frequent use of hand sanitizers and nonstop hand washing can lead to dry or cracked skin. While hand washing is paramount for keeping yourself germ-free, you need to take proper measures to care for your skin.

Wash With Warm Water

According to many surgeons, who wash their hands upwards of 70 times a day, washing hands with lukewarm water is the best option. Dr. Daniela Kroshinsky, director of pediatric dermatology and inpatient dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, said that very hot water can dry things out, stripping your hands of natural oils. Keep your hands healthy by washing with lukewarm water and plenty of soap.

Blot Dry

The way you dry your hands is equally as important as the way you wash them. The best way is to blot your hands dry, as opposed to wiping them because that can cause micro-abrasions on the skin. Paper towels are best because they are single use and disposable. If you use towels at home, everyone in the home should get his or her own towel and the towels should be replaced with clean ones every three days.

Apply Moisturizer

When you don’t seal water into the skin after washing, the skin can become very dry. Creams, ointments, or moisturizers are better than lotions because lotions have high water content, meaning they don’t block water from escaping the skin. You want to use a product that helps the skin retain moisture. Moisturizers work to restore the barrier function of the epidermis, providing a protective film on the skin. Use A Cuticle Oil

While you have to worry about moisturizing your hands, you need to pay equal attention to your cuticles. Cuticles can dry out easily with frequent hand washing, so you may want to keep cuticle oil on your desk, in your bag, in your car, or somewhere that is near your person so that you can apply it regularly. Moisturize Before Bed

Apply your moisturizer or carrier oil to your hands before bed so that they can heal overnight. If you don’t want to use a moisturizer, you can use jojoba oil with a few drops of tea tree oil to encourage healthier skin. Before you climb into bed, let the moisturizer or oil soak into your skin, so you don’t immediately wipe it off onto your sheets.
