The same noticeable, embarrassing flakes found in the hair and on your shoulders are also found in your beard. Typically accompanied by dry and itchy skin, beard dandruff, or beardruff, is an annoyance more than anything. Since you can’t just brush it out, you need a quality shampoo that gets rid of beard dandruff. Remember, a standard anti-dandruff shampoo is not suitable for the face because it is designed for the scalp.

What Causes Beard Dandruff?

In a nutshell, beard dandruff is caused by dry skin. It is typically more prevalent in longer beards because the skin underneath can become itchy and flaky. Men with shorter beards can also experience beardruff, and skin that is red becomes more noticeable under shorter-length hair.

Using harsh shampoos, conditioners, or balms that are not designed for the face is usually the cause of beardruff. The facial skin is quite sensitive, so you have to use the appropriate products for the beard. Additionally, dandruff is caused by yeast overgrowth and although it is more common on the scalp, it also exists on the beard (or cheeks/chin).

The aim of this article isn’t to fully cover the root cause of beard dandruff, though. Having beard dandruff is not a common issue, which is why you don’t see flakes on every man’s beard. Roughly 40% of men with beards experience beard dandruff, which is high, but it’s as common as other things.

How To Get Rid Of Beard Dandruff

Forget the 2in1 shampoo and conditioner combo that doubles as a beard shampoo, guys. Shampoo for hair is vastly different from beard shampoo, and for good reason. The scalp and face are two different animals, and each one requires specific products. They differ in the way that they reproduce oils, which are stripped from the skin by hair shampoo. The skin on the face produces the same amount of oil, no matter how often you wash it.

That’s why a proper beard shampoo that adds wholesome oils to the beard is your best bet. Not only does this oil up the beard properly, but it also helps reduce the risk of dried out skin and dandruff. Even though a beard shampoo is beneficial, you don’t want to over-wash your beard. You should only wash your beard two to three times per week to prevent it from drying out.

Lastly, keep your beard hydrated, especially if it is longer. Follow up your shampoo with a beard conditioner and apply beard oil daily. If you follow these steps, then you can help prevent beard ruff.

DIY Dandruff Shampoo For Beards

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 tablespoon argan oil
 • 1 teaspoon jojoba oil
 • 1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil
 • 1/8 cup castile soap
 • 1/8 cup filtered water
 • 4 drops tea tree oil
 • 4 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

 • Add the argan oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, and castile soap to a four-ounce bottle and stir to combine.
 • Add the water and essential oils, screw on the top, and shake well to combine the ingredients.
 • Before each use, make sure to shake it up because the oils will likely separate. To use, add a dime-size amount to your beard and work it into the skin. Make sure to work it into the strands of your beard as well. Rinse with warm water and dry.

Cologne can be hit or miss. It is a very common gift for men, especially fathers who enjoy wearing cologne or aftershave. Due to personal preference and powerful or varying scents, picking the right cologne can be tricky. Not to mention, most commercial colognes contain synthetic fragrances, which can include carcinogens, respiratory irritants, environmental toxins, and more harmful substances.

Making your own cologne with all-natural essential oils ensures a product that you can use safely and confidently. Don’t worry, because essential oil colognes will not make you smell awful, or like you just stepped out of a wild animal’s cave. In fact, the cologne recipes in this article may help you smell like freedom, the wild, and volcanos. Well, to each their own regarding the scents!

Some Cologne Notes

It is helpful to understand a few notes before you mix up your essential oil blends. You need to understand fragrance notes, which are divided into three classes: top, middle, and base. The top note is the first scent you notice after application, but it is also the quickest to fade. That leaves you with the next lasting scent, the middle class. Finally, the bass class is the scent that lasts the longest. A general formula is 10-15% for the top note, 25-30% for the middle note, and 55-65% for the base note. You can adjust the ratios any way you please, but that is simply a suggested starting place.

Nightlife

Getting ready to have a night on the town? Apply this gentlemanly blend that has notes of citrus with a perfectly earthy smell of vetiver. Researchers state that the essential oils in this blend help to support immune function and promote positive feelings. The recipe is as follows:

 • 3 drops of lemon essential oil (top note)
 • 4 drops of cardamom essential oil (middle note)
 • 4 drops of ylang ylang essential oil (middle note)
 • 6 drops of vetiver essential oil (base note)

Earthy

Crave the smell of the woods? This simple blend is great to apply for any time of day, as it helps you smell like a flannel-wearing, ax-yielding lumberjack. Frankincense and copaiba are great for reducing stress and anxiety, making this a great workday cologne. The recipe is as follows:

 • 4 drops of lemongrass essential oil (top note)
 • 6 drops of copaiba essential oil (middle note)
 • 8 drops of frankincense essential oil (base note)

Outdoorsy

This is the go-to blend for anyone who loves the outdoors. Because this blend contains cedarwood essential oil, you’ll smell like you lathered yourself in pine trees. Don’t worry, though, because it has a citrusy zest, giving this blend a refreshingly manly scent. This recipe is as follows:

 • 3 drops of lemongrass essential oil (top note)
 • 3 drops of basil essential oil (middle note)
 • 4 drops of cedarwood essential oil (base note)
 • 6 drops of Douglas fir essential oil (base note)

Office

Great to wear during the workday, this blend of essential oils has beautiful notes of citrus and the woods. The essential oils help to ground your emotions, balance the mood, stimulate the brain, and promote focus. The recipe is as follows:

 • 4 drops of wild orange essential oil (top note)
 • 6 drops of sandalwood essential oil (middle note)
 • 10 drops of frankincense essential oil (base note)

How To Make DIY Cologne

This is an easy method for a homemade spray cologne using the above essential oil blends. To make the spray cologne, use a glass spray bottle, the essential oils, vegetable glycerin, and witch hazel.

Instructions:

 • In a two-ounce glass spray bottle, combine the essential oils and 1/2 tsp of vegetable glycerin.
 • Top off the rest of the bottle with witch hazel, screw on the top, and shake well.
 • Spray on the chest, wrist, or neck when ready to use and make sure to shake before each use.

The beard care industry is booming and more guys continue to make the switch from shaving to manicuring and encouraging a healthy beard. There are oils, washes, rinses, shampoos, conditioners, and wax that keep beards looking as healthy and stylish as possible. What if some of these products aren’t as beneficial as you think they are? As it turns out, many of these products, especially the ones that promise hydration, may not do their job at all.

Beard oils can cost a fortune, which is strange considering that the ingredients are not incredibly expensive. Since it’s very easy to mix oils together in a bottle, save a little money and make your own beard oil. When you make your own oil blend, you know exactly what goes into the recipe. You don’t have to worry about potential sulfates or parabens that come in many beard products.

Why Should You Use Beard Oil?

Men are prideful of their beards, as they should be. They style them, making them appear silky and luxurious for all to see. Unfortunately, men don’t spend as much time caring for the skin underneath their beards. Beard itch is a common problem for men and it results in a lot of scratching and “beardruff,” the unofficial term for beard dandruff. Most men don’t realize that beards remove moisture from the skin, so it’s important to bring it back. That’s why using a beard oil is necessary for optimal beard health. Not only does it help to soften the beard, but it also works to bring moisture back to relieve itching. The ingredients below are great for providing your beard with moisture.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is great for the skin and hair, working to reduce breakage and enhance overall hair strength. This can encourage a healthier, stronger-looking beard. Jojoba oil also works to reduce sebum build-up on the skin, which can actually discourage beard growth. Massaging jojoba oil into the beard and skin can allow more flow to the skin for consistent growth. It also acts as a natural moisturizer, helping the skin retain moisture for a long time. By increasing moisture and reducing sebum build-up, you may experience fewer blackheads or breakouts under the beard.

Grapeseed Oil

This is a plant-based oil that is a byproduct of winemaking. It’s one of the best oils for keeping the beard as healthy as possible. Grapeseed oil contains beta-carotene, omega-6 fatty acids, palmitic acid, antioxidants, linoleic acid, and oleic acid. All of these nutrients contribute to healthier hair follicles, which may enhance beard growth. Additionally, grapeseed oil hydrates the skin under the beard, which reduces the risk of beardruff or dry, flaky skin.

Shea Butter

If you want to naturally soften your beard, shea butter is the ingredient to accomplish that goal. Shea butter is naturally rich in vitamins, A, E, and F, all of which aid collagen production and healthier skin. The greatest thing about shea butter is that it keeps the skin under the beard moisturized and hydrated. When the skin under the beard is replete with moisture, you reduce the risk of dryness and itchiness. Lastly, shea butter helps to reduce inflammation under the beard, which promotes less hair breakage and unhealthy hair follicles.

DIY Beard Oil

Ingredients:

 • 1 gram shea butter
 • 64 grams jojoba oil
 • 32 grams grapeseed oil
 • 10 drops lavender essential oil
 • 4 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 6 drops bergamot essential oil
 • 4 drops black pepper essential oil

Instructions:

 • Warm the shea butter and jojoba oil in a double boiler over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally until fully melted and incorporated.
 • Remove the mixture from the heat and pour in the grapeseed oil and essential oils. It’s a soothing scent blend.
 • Should you want to have this beard oil be scent-less, simply exclude the essential oils.
 • Pour the mixture into a small glass bottle with a little dropper top. This will make access to the oil and application much easier.
 • When ready to use, pour a few drops in your hand, massage the hands together, and then massage the beard evenly.
 • Store the bottle in a cool, dry place.

Some men despise shaving and let their facial hair grow wild. Others prefer a cleaner look, grooming their beards to a specific shape and length. Finally, there are those who relish in the moment after a close shave. The smooth skin is clean and fresh, but what are guys doing to nourish their post-shave skin? It doesn’t have to be an elaborate routine; rather, applying a simple DIY aftershave can do the trick.

What Is Aftershave?

Just as the name suggests, aftershave is something to treat your skin after you shave. Some guys enjoy the refreshing scent, but what are the real benefits? Well, that all depends on what comprises the aftershave. For the most part, alcohol-based aftershaves act like facial sanitizers, cleaning the tiny cuts on the epidermis post-shave. Most aftershaves contain isopropyl alcohol, which kills bacteria that potentially inhabit those little cuts. However, alcohol-based aftershaves can have harmful effects on the skin

It’s often better to nourish the skin with carrier oils and essential oils after you shave. Great natural moisturizers include sweet almond oil, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. These ingredients help to reduce itching, potential swelling, ingrown hairs, clogged pores, or follicle inflammation. It’s better to use an aftershave that contains those ingredients. That’s why you clicked on this article, hopefully.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a superstar for your skin, no matter if you have a sunburn, small wound, or freshly shaven skin. It encourages cell reproduction, working to regenerate and heal the skin without intense scarring. If the goal after you shave is to have the smoothest skin ever, aloe vera should be your go-to ingredient. Not only does it help to minimize the risk of acne, but it is also excellent for sensitive skin that’s prone to razor bumps

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil offers a very soothing and sinus-cleansing aroma, but that’s not why it’s in this aftershave recipe. The essential oil is naturally rich in antiseptic properties, vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids. It helps to decrease inflammation and offers a cooling sensation that invigorates the skin when you apply it after shaving. Because of the antiseptic properties, peppermint essential oil helps reduce the risk of razor burns or rashes.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is well known for its myriad health benefits. It works to moisturize the skin, cleanse pores, and remove bad odors. It’s also beneficial to use after shaving because it helps prevent and even treat razor-related injuries. Tea tree oil helps to alleviate irritation after shaving because it is a natural astringent. Additionally, it helps remedy little nicks that occur as a natural result of shaving with a razor.

DIY Peppermint Tea Tree Aftershave

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 cup witch hazel
 • 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
 • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
 • 2 tablespoons filtered water
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 10 drops tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

 • Procure a four-ounce spray bottle and pour all of the ingredients into it.
 • Shake the bottle vigorously to combine.
 • Before each use, shake well and then spritz one or two sprays on your face after shaving. You can let it air dry or pat your face with a towel.

No bearded man wants to scratch his beard and see dry flakes fly everywhere, but this is a very common occurrence. According to a 2019 statistic, one in every two bearded men in the United States suffers from beard dandruff, appropriately dubbed “beardruff.” The good news is that there are many home remedies to help men avert this problem, which worsens as we enter the dryer fall and winter months, and ultimately get rid of beard dandruff

What Is Beardruff?

If you want to know how to get rid of beard dandruff, you must first understand the cause. Sebaceous glands surround the root of every beard follicle. These glands produce an oil known as sebum, which helps to hydrate and nourish the skin. Now, there come’s a time in every man’s beard growing journey when the hair follicles get too long. When this happens, the sebaceous glands cannot retain enough sebum to keep the skin nourished, causing it to dry out. Your beardruff worsens if you live in dryer climates, especially areas that are very hot or cold. The hot weather causes facial hair to draw moisture away from the skin, which leaves the skin underneath the beard flaky and dry. On the other hand, some men with thicker beards suffer from dandruff-causing fungus. The thickness actually causes the fungus to spread rapidly because it’s a shaded and protected from the sun and weather.

So How Do You Get Rid Of Beard Dandruff?

You don’t always need to seek help from a dermatologist to fix the dry skin under your beard. There are many natural ingredients that encourage a healthy beard. The first and most important rule is to address the problem. The longer you neglect the health of your beard, the harder it is to keep it hydrated and nourished. You can experiment with the following ingredients to keep your beard flake-free!

Wash With Care

Washing your beard too often with chemical beard shampoos can increase dryness under the beard. First off, don’t wash your beard every day. The reason you don’t wash every day is because it strips the skin of natural sebum. Only wash your beard with gentle beard shampoos two or three times per week. Finally, don’t use anti-dandruff shampoos because they inhibit beard growth.

Use Lemon Juice

If the skin under your beard is as dry as the Mojave desert, it’s time to restore the natural pH balance of your skin. Use lemon juice to help balance the skin’s pH and neutralize dandruff-causing microorganisms. The skin also absorbs the vitamin C in lemon juice, which helps to nourish skin cells. Mix two teaspoons of lemon juice in one cup of warm water. Rub this mixture into your beard and leave it on for five minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Keep doing this once daily until your beardruff goes away.

Nourish With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the best carrier oils for the skin, but make sure that you purchase virgin coconut oil for best results. Virgin coconut oil is cold-pressed, meaning it retains more vitamins and minerals that nourish your skin. The antimicrobial properties of virgin coconut oil fight dandruff-causing fungi. You can apply virgin coconut oil to your beard daily to reduce itchiness and flakiness.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains anti-fungal properties that work to fight back against dandruff. The acetic acid also helps to restore a healthy pH balance on the skin. Dry skin often results from being too alkaline, which is typically caused by the excessive use of shampoos. We have to reiterate that you should only wash your beard two to three times per week. Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a bottle and rinse with that mixture once daily. Make sure to leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing it away with warm water.

Sea Salt Rinse

Sea salt has a high mineral content, making it excellent for the skin. In fact, the minerals in sea salt actually promote healthy skin cell growth! When you apply a sea salt rinse to your beard, it can help slow the growth of fungi, which causes dandruff. Dissolve one teaspoon of sea salt in one cup of warm water and allow it to come to room temperature. Rub it all through your beard and roots, leave it on for five minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

The post Beard Brethren Unite For World Beard Day appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

The autumnal equinox comes toward the end of September, but the first Saturday in September has become the annual worldwide event that is World Beard Day. The beard has become somewhat of a spectacle, with long, well-maintained, sometimes braided beards proclaiming masculinity. Whether you are scruffy, groomed, sporting a thick mustache, or have sparse whiskers, you deserve to rejoice with your fellow bearded brethren.

Beard Fact: Some of the most famous beards on the planet belong to the guitar player and bass player from the band ZZ Top. These two men, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill, have been growing their beards out since the 1970s. The two have admitted that they don’t want to cut them because they don’t know what’s underneath the wiry mess. Interestingly enough, the drummer, Frank Beard, is the only band member who does not have a beard.

World Beard Day is about promoting the global status of the glorious beard. It should be known that any sort of shaving, buzzing, or trimming on this day is universally understood to be disrespectful. You can shampoo, condition, moisturize, apply beard oil, brush, or comb your beard, but for the love of Zeus, do not cut or trim those glorious facial hairs, no matter how short or long they are.

Beard Fact: While proper beard care is an essential component of maintaining a healthy looking beard, diet plays an equally important role in the appearance and growth of your beard. Devouring burgers, tearing ribs from the bone, and stuffing your face with hotdogs, only to have condiments drip into your beard, is not the way to keep your beard healthy. Focus on nutrient dense, plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains because the health of your beard starts with a healthy body.

While we can’t control what you eat or how you choose to groom your beard, we can encourage you to use some DIY beard hygiene products that are made from all-natural ingredients. Try the following DIY beard products out and let us know how you like them. Happy World Beard Day!

Some men have the natural ability to grow a healthy face full of hair, but there are specific steps a man can take to encourage the growth of a lumberjack-esque beard. Not every man believes that grooming his own beard is necessary, but it is most certainly a necessity. Removing dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess oils from the beard can only be done by properly washing, conditioning, and applying a beard oil or balm.

Beard growing has become a hobby and a profession for certain men. There are beard competitions around the world, and you best believe that these gentlemen treat their beards with the love and respect they deserve. While proper beard hygiene is one component of maintaining beard health, focusing on a healthy diet that is rich in nutrients is one aspect of beard health that many men fail to recognize. The reality is that the beard begins on the inside, and the beard will reflect poor dietary choices, high stress levels, or lack of sleep.

Consuming foods that are rich in B-vitamins and plant-based protein can be a positive step towards a thicker, luscious beard. Vitamins B6 and B12 have been proven to promote hair growth, while protein accelerates hair growth by helping to maintain healthy testosterone levels. Keep in mind that a diet that is rich in sugars, processed foods, and refined grains may prevent your beard from growing.

Why You Should Use Beard Oil

First off, scent is the most important thing when it comes to selecting or creating the perfect beard oil. You want to use oils that appeal to you, but you also want to look at the health benefits they offer. The primary reason to use beard oil is to promote hair growth, maintain beard shine and strength, and moisturize the skin under the beard. Additionally, using beard oil can help you style your beard. To help your beard reach its fullest potential, here is a nourishing DIY beard oil that smells and feels amazing.

Ingredients:

 • 2-3 drops tea tree oil
 • 2-3 drops cedarwood essential oil
 • 4-5 drops lavender essential oil
 • sweet almond oil
 • dropper bottle

Instructions:

 • Add the tea tree, cedarwood, and lavender essential oils to the dropper bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with sweet almond oil.
 • Close the bottle and give it a shake to combine all the oils. Store in your bathroom so that it can become a key part of your beard care routine.

Using The Beard Oil

 • This beard oil should be used every day for best results.
 • After washing your beard, thoroughly dry the hair before dropping a few drops of the beard oil in your palms and massaging it into your skin and beard.
 • If you feel like your skin is extra dry, you can rub a little extra oil into your beard before bed.
