When the weather is dull and cold and the sun can barely be seen through the clouds, you need a meal that can refresh your palate; a meal that can elevate your mood. What better way to do that than by embracing seasonal produce?! This salad’s ingredient list is very simple, but it has contrasting textures and flavors. Crisp fennel pairs with juicy pink grapefruit and sweet Cara Cara oranges. The sweetness and subtle tartness of the citrus fruits balance fennel’s strong anise flavor.

Even though the salad ingredients are simple, they are powerful in flavor. For this reason, we chose to keep the dressing very simple. Extra virgin olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and pinch of sea salt. That’s all you need to dress the fennel, grapefruit, and oranges. Pour the dressing over the ingredients and toss gently to coat. At this point, you can let the ingredients remain in the dressing for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to intensify. When ready to serve, feel free to top with fresh parsley, pomegranate arils, or even raw walnuts. You can also top the salad with

As a quick and final note before you make the salad, make sure to thinly slice the fennel. Thick pieces will have a strong anise flavor and may be unpleasant if you are still getting used to fennel. It’s a strong flavor that is reminiscent of black licorice. Just remember that the citrus fruits help tame that intensity. We hope you enjoy!

This kale, apple, and pomegranate salad with a raw vegan, creamy tahini dressing is exactly what happens when crunch decides to dress up for dinner. Take a large bunch of kale to form the sturdy, leafy base, and it is massaged just enough to be tender but still proud of its texture. Oh, you don’t know about giving your kale a lovely massage? While rinsing the kale, massage the leaves to help break down the fibrous textures. Diced apples bring crisp sweetness, while pomegranate seeds pop with jewel-like tartness. Finally, a generous scatter of thinly sliced green onions adds a savory bite and added crunch.

Every salad worth its salt requires an incredible dressing. You don’t want to just eat some kale, apples, pomegranates, and green onions on their own! This dressing deserves its own round of applause. Minced garlic pairs up with sea salt, fresh lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar to create a bright, tangy base that wakes up every piece of kale in the salad. This dressing wouldn’t be anything without the creamy tahini, which swoops in to create a luxurious base that is balanced by maple syrup’s mellow sweetness. Black pepper adds a subtle kick, while the water loosens everything into a pourable, drizzle-worthy consistency.

Once you toss everything together, you are ready to serve and enjoy immediately. Kale’s subtle bitterness pairs beautifully with the sweetly tart fruit and rich tahini dressing. It is filling, addictive, and charming enough to steal the spotlight next to any main dish. In short, it’s proof that eating your greens can be equal parts smart and satisfying.

Navigating Thanksgiving can be quite a challenge, especially if you are trying to adhere to a diet or keep your weight in check. Thanksgiving does not have to sabotage your healthy journey or your weight. With a little knowhow, you can enjoy your annual favorites and make it out of Thanksgiving without entering a massive food coma. The only thing that should be stuffed on Thanksgiving is the turkey! In this article we’ll detail some thoughtful tips to help you stay as healthy as possible this Thanksgiving Day.

Eat Breakfast

It is very common for people to avoid eating until the big meal. The thought process is that saving up calories will be a smart play. Nutritionists suggest that eating a small, balanced meal in the morning can give you more control over your appetite. Begin the day with a fruit and vegetable smoothie, cup of chia pudding, bowl of oatmeal (not the packaged stuff), or a cup of overnight oats. Eating a fiber-rich meal with a variety of vitamins and minerals will actually help you control yourself at the Thanksgiving table.

Lighten It Up

What we mean by this is that you should have some lighter food options at your Thanksgiving table. Whether you are hosting or attending, bring a couple dishes that contain far less fat, sugar, and calories than everything else. Try using salt-free chicken broth to baste the turkey or make the gravy. Experiment with fruit puree instead of oil in baked goods. You can also make a fall-themed roasted vegetable medley, salad, or root vegetable puree in place of mashed potatoes.

Get Active

There is no need to go hard in the paint, but it is a great idea to move the body before the big meal. You will likely not want to move after, so burn off some energy and calories earlier in the day. Go on a long walk with family, engage in an at-home HIIT workout, or do a family yoga practice. Make fitness a family affair! You can even encourage everyone to go on a post-dinner stroll to help encourage healthier digestion

Skip Seconds

It is difficult, but we believe that you have the willpower to resist a second helping of food. Plan your plate accordingly and enjoy the food you selected. Save a little room for a piece of dessert you want and let that be the end of the meal. Choose the best selections at the buffet, not just a little of everything because it’s all there. Nutritionists state that roasted sweet potatoes, thin gravy, plain vegetables, and white turkey meat are your best lower-fat, lower-calorie options. Plus, you can always have another plate the next day when you reheat leftovers.

Go Easy With Alcohol

It can be easy to overindulge in both food and alcohol, especially if you are watching the games with family and friends. Alcohol, especially beer, can increase your caloric intake quite a bit, and that is something you don’t need on Thanksgiving. Enjoy sparkling water, plain water, or iced or hot teas on thanksgiving to promote healthier digestion. Additionally, avoid sugary sodas to limit sugar and caloric intake.

Savor Your Food Slowly

Eat slowly this Thanksgiving, savoring every bite of food you put in your mouth. Put your fork down between bites and pay attention to each mouthful. That’s the best way to feel satisfied with your plate of food. Additionally, choose dishes that contain whole grains, vegetables, and broth-based soups this year.

Focus On Family And Friends

Yes, Thanksgiving revolves around food, but it also is a time to be thankful for the relationships between family and friends. The main event of the day should be socializing with friends and family. Spend quality time with them because you may not see some of them again for a while.

Do you judge a restaurant or household by the condiments they have? What is the brand and what is the quality of the condiment? Do you love a homemade ketchup, chutney, or dressing? If you answered yes, then you, like us, prefer the preservative-free stuff made with love and care. That’s exactly what this pumpkin seed ranch dressing is: a salad dressing, dip, and sauce that contains tons of nutrients. It may just become a staple around your house!

Ranch dressing is beloved by many people and it is not uncommon for people to have serious opinions about the ranch dressing they enjoy. Usually, the valley is hidden, if you’re picking up what we’re laying down. Unfortunately, most store bought ranch dressings are full of fat, unhealthy inflammatory oils, preservatives, added sugars, and a lot of other problematic ingredients that should not be in a salad dressing. A good ranch dressing should be both creamy and refreshing, packed with herbs and spices, and completely gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, and low-carb friendly.

Such is the case with this raw vegan pumpkin seed ranch dressing. It uses pumpkin seeds, homemade almond milk, apple cider vinegar, onion, mint or parsley, dried dill, paprika, mustard powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Blend all of those ingredients together to create a lovely sauce/salad dressing/condiment. Make sure that you blend until the mixture reaches the consistency you prefer. If you enjoy a thicker ranch dressing, you can add more pumpkin seeds or less almond milk. Play with those measurements to achieve your desired result.

Who needs Larabars when you can easily make your own with three simple ingredients? These are perfect if you have been looking to enjoy healthy snack options during your cleanse. They provide outstanding flavor and lots of fiber, healthy fats, and protein, all of which help keep you full between meals. The dates and cashews establish a great balance of nuttiness and sweetness, and the pinch of sea salt gives the bars a little extra pizzazz. It’s almost like a pinch of sea salt on a chocolate chip cookie or delectable caramel. You truly can’t go wrong with a pinch of sea salt in sweet treats.

For this recipe you will need Medjool dates, raw cashews, and sea salt. Dates are naturally sweet and sticky, providing the base for these bars. Make sure your dates are soft and fresh. Need assistance blending? Soak the dates in warm water for about 15 minutes prior to blending them in the food processor. Raw cashews also blend a little easier if you soak them for an hour or so. Just make sure that you discard the soaking water for both the dates and cashews if you decide to soak them. Not a fan of cashews? You can swap them for any raw nut in the same amount. Walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and more work great!

After you blend the ingredients and achieve a sticky, dough-like consistency, you will transfer the mixture to an 8″x8″ baking pan lined with parchment paper. Press the mixture into the pan until you have an even layer that is about 1/2-inch or so thick. Freeze for 30 minutes and then remove from the freezer. That will ensure that the bars are somewhat solidified to the point where you can cut them into 10 bars. Separate them and consider wrapping them individually in plastic wrap. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

3 Morning Beverages That Support Digestive Function  https://www.dherbs.com/articles/3-morning-beverages-that-support-digestive-function/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 09:01:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=176790

For centuries, people around the world have turned to a variety of herbs, tonics, and specialized drinks for health benefits. Tepache originated in Mexico and kombucha originated in northeastern China. So it’s safe to say that each culture has their own beneficial, gut-enhancing beverage. To this day, there is no shortage of drinks that promise better gut health. Some drinks have made this list due to clever marketing, but a growing body of research shines a light on the digestive benefits of certain beverages. With so many drinks that claim to support gut health, though, how can you know which one is really worth its salt?

Why Should You Drink Gut-Healthy Drinks?

Your goal should always be to support the gut microbiome with prebiotics and probiotics. Your microbiome consists of good bacteria and unhealthy bacteria. The more good bacteria in the gut, the better your digestive and immune systems function. Researchers continue to learn all the ways the microbiome affects overall health via new studies.

Gut-healthy drinks work to support the gut microbiome, but the benefits don’t stop there. The beverages in this article contain important vitamins and antioxidants that exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Sure, probiotic supplements and foods have these benefits, but sometimes it is a little easier to reach for one of the following drinks

Apple Cider Vinegar

As a quick note, it’s imperative that you do not take a shot of apple cider vinegar. That can burn the throat and cause acid reflux. Instead, mix a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar in about 12 ounces of water. You can add a squeeze of lemon to mellow the intensity of the vinegar if you prefer, as lemon will only enhance the benefits. Apple cider vinegar, much like kefir or kombucha, is a fermented liquid. Make sure to purchase apple cider vinegar with “the mother,” which is a thick layer of bacteria and yeast that ferments the apple juice. It contains probiotics that encourage optimal gut health. Some research indicates that apple cider vinegar helps to ease bloating, while other research shows that it may worsen gastrointestinal symptoms.

Green Tea

Green tea has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine, but it is a popular beverage in present day. There is a lot of research to substantiate green tea’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The gut breaks down green tea’s polyphenols to promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Enjoy green tea hot or iced, as the temperature does not affect the benefits. What does affect the benefits, however, is what you add to it. If you add tons of sugar, milk, or syrups, you essentially cancel out the benefits.

Ginger Tea

Ginger is a zesty spice that lends itself to a variety of different foods and beverages. Historically, it has been used in various medicinal applications because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help relieve nausea, soothe a sore throat, and promote stomach motility, which is the process the gut performs to digest food and liquids. Encouraging this process can ease symptoms of heartburn and bloating. All of that said, more research is still necessary to show ginger’s effect on gut health. The good news is that ginger and ginger tea are both widely available and affordable. You can boil ginger root on its own or steep the tea bags in hot water. It does have a kick, so feel free to sweeten it with raw agave or stevia.

If you look at the ingredient label on a pint or quart of ice cream, you will notice a long list of ingredients, with sugar being high on the list. The more complicated your flavor (think moose tracks, or sea salt caramel with chocolate swirl), the more sugar and ingredients the ice cream has. This apricot sorbet is the opposite of that. Not only is it free of excess sugar, but it also doesn’t contain stabilizers or other preservatives. It is pure, raw vegan goodness!

When life gives you apricots, you make apricot sorbet, because you sure can’t make lemonade out of apricots! Apricots have a slightly tart and sweet flavor profile, but every now and again, you can come across a batch with subpar flavor. Sure, you could dehydrate that batch to make dried apricots, or you could turn the apricots into a magnificent sorbet. We did exactly that because making sorbet is very simple and requires almost none of your time. You simply blend the ingredients together, add them to a freezer-safe container, freezer until firm, and then scoop to enjoy.

From start to finish, this sorbet takes about 10 minutes to prep and blend. Make it a little after lunch and it’ll be ready to enjoy by the time you finish eating dinner. Even though the sorbet is sweetened with maple syrup, it is not overly sweet. The fresh lemon juice brings a zesty acidity, so the sorbet is not overly sweet. It is beautifully creamy and smooth, so make it now while apricots are in season. Get them before they leave supermarket shelves!

Summer is in full swing and there is no better way to celebrate warmer temps than with a delicious and refreshing fruit salsa. Think of this recipe like a pico de gallo with pizzazz. We’ve posted a recipe for strawberry salsa and a recipe for pineapple salsa, so why not combine them? Don’t pineapples and strawberries just scream summer? They are classic summer fruits that give the salsa a delightful zing.

In case you don’t know how to pick a pineapple at the store, we want to give you a little tip. Choose a larger fruit, as that will yield less waste. Tug on the top leaves of the pineapple. If they pull out easily, then the pineapple is ripe and ready to enjoy. You should not see any bruises, wrinkles, or soft spots on the pineapple, or else it will not be enjoyable. Additionally, check the bottom of the pineapple to ensure that no mold has formed on the outside. That is a definite sign of an overripe or damaged pineapple.

If you are not a big spice fan, this is the salsa for you. The jalapeño brings a hint of spice to this salsa, but it doesn’t contest with the sweetness of pineapple and strawberry. You can even leave the seeds in the salsa! The sweet fruit also helps to mellow out the intensity of the red onion. If you really want to cut the allium flavor from the onion, season the onion with salt and squeeze the lime over before adding the rest of the ingredients. Once you make the salsa and enjoy some, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.

Detox drinks have gained popularity as popular drinks that aid your weight loss efforts. They contain a mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs, or natural ingredients that boost the body’s ability to eliminate toxins. Think of “detox beverages” as an umbrella term for infused waters, juices, smoothies, teas, and other related drinks. Their appeal is simple: they offer a natural way to encourage detoxification in a refreshing, tasty, and easy-to-consume way.

What Are The Benefits And Claims?

There is no denying that people regularly ingest pollutants and artificial chemicals on a daily basis. From environmental pollution to heavily processed foods, harmful chemicals and pathogens are near impossible to avoid. Consuming detox drinks can give the body’s natural detoxification processes a helping hand. In fact, some healthcare experts praise detox drinks because they help relieve bloating, gas, headaches, fatigue, and may even help cleanse the liver and digestive tract.

Because detox drinks contain a diverse mix of natural ingredients, they work to enhance weight loss efforts and reduce inflammation. You may find that you experience a renewed sense of energy after consuming one or more of the drinks in this article. By promoting detoxification, you may experience reduced acne, hydrated skin, better digestion, fewer aches and pains, weight loss, and healthier hair. As always, though, maintaining a healthy diet, optimal sleep, and regular exercise is necessary for optimal health. The following beverages can aid your detox efforts, but they won’t counteract unhealthy diet and poor lifestyle habits.

Cucumber Mint Detox

Mint can help improve the flow of bile in the stomach and cucumbers help protect the body from oxidative stress. The combination of cucumber, mint, and lemon works well for maintaining the body’s fluid and mineral balance as well. All three ingredients contain beneficial antioxidants that may help improve digestion and neutralize free radicals. Prepare this drink by washing, peeling, and slicing two cucumbers. Add the sliced cucumbers, a handful of fresh mint leaves, and a sliced lemon to a large pitcher. Fill with water, stir, and refrigerate for about an hour so the flavors can infuse into the water. Sip and enjoy.

Orange Carrot Ginger Detox

Get ready for a major dose of beta-carotene and vitamin C, two antioxidant compounds that contribute to optimal digestion and immune function. According to health studies, beta-carotene may aid your weight loss efforts by improving digestion, just like ginger. Praised for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger may reduce bloating, improve digestion, and reduce stomach cramps. In order to make this drink, juice one large carrot and two oranges separately. Pour both the orange and carrot juices into a blender and add one tablespoon each of freshly grated turmeric and ginger root. Blend for 30 seconds, strain the mixture, and then serve.

Pomegranate Aloe Vera Detox

Not only is this a visually stunning beverage, but it also does wonders for your digestive and immune systems. The important instruction here is to use fresh aloe vera, not store bought aloe juice. You want that gel straight from the source! Aloe vera has been known to reduce bloating, regulate bowel movements, relieve constipation, and improve digestive discomfort. Beet juice works to cleanse the liver, improve circulation, and cleanse the blood. Pomegranates happen to be one of the richest sources of antioxidants, which fight free radicals and boost immune function. To make this juice, peel the rind from an aloe vera plant leaf. Discard the rind and reserve about two tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Add that to a blender with two cups of unsweetened pomegranate juice and 1/2 cup of diced beet. Blend until smooth and mix in a dash of black pepper prior to serving.

Simple Lemon Detox

Drinking water is obviously beneficial for your health, promoting optimal circulation and waste elimination. Infusing your water with lemon can help enhance those efforts. Lemons are naturally rich in vitamin C, which benefits your bones, gums, skin, and immune system. It’s very easy to create this detox drink because all you have to do is squeeze two to three lemons in one liter of water. Add a pinch of sea salt, mix, and enjoy over ice.

Ginger Lychee Lemon Detox

As stated earlier, ginger is rich in anti-inflammatory properties that may ward off inflammation. Some research indicates that ginger may help the body cleanse certain organs. Additionally, lychee fruit contains epicatechin and rutin, two antioxidant compounds that help protect against chronic diseases, cataracts, oxidative stress, and more. Find a large mason jar and place a half-cup of minced ginger, half-cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and one cup of fresh lychee juice. Add ice to your desired temperature and a pinch of sea salt, mix, and then enjoy. You have the option to add some sliced grapes and a couple tablespoons of chia seeds for added nutritional benefits.
