If you look at the ingredient label on a pint or quart of ice cream, you will notice a long list of ingredients, with sugar being high on the list. The more complicated your flavor (think moose tracks, or sea salt caramel with chocolate swirl), the more sugar and ingredients the ice cream has. This apricot sorbet is the opposite of that. Not only is it free of excess sugar, but it also doesn’t contain stabilizers or other preservatives. It is pure, raw vegan goodness!

When life gives you apricots, you make apricot sorbet, because you sure can’t make lemonade out of apricots! Apricots have a slightly tart and sweet flavor profile, but every now and again, you can come across a batch with subpar flavor. Sure, you could dehydrate that batch to make dried apricots, or you could turn the apricots into a magnificent sorbet. We did exactly that because making sorbet is very simple and requires almost none of your time. You simply blend the ingredients together, add them to a freezer-safe container, freezer until firm, and then scoop to enjoy.

From start to finish, this sorbet takes about 10 minutes to prep and blend. Make it a little after lunch and it’ll be ready to enjoy by the time you finish eating dinner. Even though the sorbet is sweetened with maple syrup, it is not overly sweet. The fresh lemon juice brings a zesty acidity, so the sorbet is not overly sweet. It is beautifully creamy and smooth, so make it now while apricots are in season. Get them before they leave supermarket shelves!

Summer is in full swing and there is no better way to celebrate warmer temps than with a delicious and refreshing fruit salsa. Think of this recipe like a pico de gallo with pizzazz. We’ve posted a recipe for strawberry salsa and a recipe for pineapple salsa, so why not combine them? Don’t pineapples and strawberries just scream summer? They are classic summer fruits that give the salsa a delightful zing.

In case you don’t know how to pick a pineapple at the store, we want to give you a little tip. Choose a larger fruit, as that will yield less waste. Tug on the top leaves of the pineapple. If they pull out easily, then the pineapple is ripe and ready to enjoy. You should not see any bruises, wrinkles, or soft spots on the pineapple, or else it will not be enjoyable. Additionally, check the bottom of the pineapple to ensure that no mold has formed on the outside. That is a definite sign of an overripe or damaged pineapple.

If you are not a big spice fan, this is the salsa for you. The jalapeño brings a hint of spice to this salsa, but it doesn’t contest with the sweetness of pineapple and strawberry. You can even leave the seeds in the salsa! The sweet fruit also helps to mellow out the intensity of the red onion. If you really want to cut the allium flavor from the onion, season the onion with salt and squeeze the lime over before adding the rest of the ingredients. Once you make the salsa and enjoy some, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.

]]>

Detox drinks have gained popularity as popular drinks that aid your weight loss efforts. They contain a mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs, or natural ingredients that boost the body’s ability to eliminate toxins. Think of “detox beverages” as an umbrella term for infused waters, juices, smoothies, teas, and other related drinks. Their appeal is simple: they offer a natural way to encourage detoxification in a refreshing, tasty, and easy-to-consume way.

What Are The Benefits And Claims?

There is no denying that people regularly ingest pollutants and artificial chemicals on a daily basis. From environmental pollution to heavily processed foods, harmful chemicals and pathogens are near impossible to avoid. Consuming detox drinks can give the body’s natural detoxification processes a helping hand. In fact, some healthcare experts praise detox drinks because they help relieve bloating, gas, headaches, fatigue, and may even help cleanse the liver and digestive tract.

Because detox drinks contain a diverse mix of natural ingredients, they work to enhance weight loss efforts and reduce inflammation. You may find that you experience a renewed sense of energy after consuming one or more of the drinks in this article. By promoting detoxification, you may experience reduced acne, hydrated skin, better digestion, fewer aches and pains, weight loss, and healthier hair. As always, though, maintaining a healthy diet, optimal sleep, and regular exercise is necessary for optimal health. The following beverages can aid your detox efforts, but they won’t counteract unhealthy diet and poor lifestyle habits.

Cucumber Mint Detox

Mint can help improve the flow of bile in the stomach and cucumbers help protect the body from oxidative stress. The combination of cucumber, mint, and lemon works well for maintaining the body’s fluid and mineral balance as well. All three ingredients contain beneficial antioxidants that may help improve digestion and neutralize free radicals. Prepare this drink by washing, peeling, and slicing two cucumbers. Add the sliced cucumbers, a handful of fresh mint leaves, and a sliced lemon to a large pitcher. Fill with water, stir, and refrigerate for about an hour so the flavors can infuse into the water. Sip and enjoy.

Orange Carrot Ginger Detox

Get ready for a major dose of beta-carotene and vitamin C, two antioxidant compounds that contribute to optimal digestion and immune function. According to health studies, beta-carotene may aid your weight loss efforts by improving digestion, just like ginger. Praised for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger may reduce bloating, improve digestion, and reduce stomach cramps. In order to make this drink, juice one large carrot and two oranges separately. Pour both the orange and carrot juices into a blender and add one tablespoon each of freshly grated turmeric and ginger root. Blend for 30 seconds, strain the mixture, and then serve.

Pomegranate Aloe Vera Detox

Not only is this a visually stunning beverage, but it also does wonders for your digestive and immune systems. The important instruction here is to use fresh aloe vera, not store bought aloe juice. You want that gel straight from the source! Aloe vera has been known to reduce bloating, regulate bowel movements, relieve constipation, and improve digestive discomfort. Beet juice works to cleanse the liver, improve circulation, and cleanse the blood. Pomegranates happen to be one of the richest sources of antioxidants, which fight free radicals and boost immune function. To make this juice, peel the rind from an aloe vera plant leaf. Discard the rind and reserve about two tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Add that to a blender with two cups of unsweetened pomegranate juice and 1/2 cup of diced beet. Blend until smooth and mix in a dash of black pepper prior to serving.

Simple Lemon Detox

Drinking water is obviously beneficial for your health, promoting optimal circulation and waste elimination. Infusing your water with lemon can help enhance those efforts. Lemons are naturally rich in vitamin C, which benefits your bones, gums, skin, and immune system. It’s very easy to create this detox drink because all you have to do is squeeze two to three lemons in one liter of water. Add a pinch of sea salt, mix, and enjoy over ice.

Ginger Lychee Lemon Detox

As stated earlier, ginger is rich in anti-inflammatory properties that may ward off inflammation. Some research indicates that ginger may help the body cleanse certain organs. Additionally, lychee fruit contains epicatechin and rutin, two antioxidant compounds that help protect against chronic diseases, cataracts, oxidative stress, and more. Find a large mason jar and place a half-cup of minced ginger, half-cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and one cup of fresh lychee juice. Add ice to your desired temperature and a pinch of sea salt, mix, and then enjoy. You have the option to add some sliced grapes and a couple tablespoons of chia seeds for added nutritional benefits.

Quick, easy, delectable, and perfect for summer, this sweet peach dressing is going to blow your taste buds away. With only five ingredients (olive oil, lemon juice, fresh peach, agave nectar, and sea salt), it is essentially summery goodness in a jar. We give it a rave review, but your palate will ultimately be the deciding judge. Can this dressing make it to the top of your summer dressings list? You’ll just have to make it and find out, but hurry before peaches are out of season!

Making a summer salad? This is the dressing you’ve been looking for. It also differs from other dressings, in that most do not blend fresh seasonal fruit into them. Because it contains fresh peach, the lifespan is not nearly as long as a store bought dressing. In fact, you have to use this dressing within three days of making it, and that’s even when you store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Because the dressing has fresh lemon juice, you want to use a peach that is ripe. Riper peaches offer a sweeter flavor, which balances the acidic nature of the lemon.

Once you prepare the ingredients, add all of them to a blender and blend until smooth. Ideally, peel the peach, as this will make for a more pleasant eating experience. You don’t have to peel the peach if that is too much work. Instead, you can blend the unpeeled peach cubes with the rest of the ingredients and strain the blended mixture through a fine mesh sieve. That will get rid of any red peel flakes in the dressing.

When the weather gets warmer, we have to bust out the refreshing recipes. Nothing quite like adding a little zest to your life with some spicy and sweet flavor combinations. That’s exactly what this pineapple jicama and cucumber salad is! If you are familiar with Mexican fruit vendors, you’ll understand this recipe perfectly. Typically, the vendor slices up a variety of fruits, such as papaya, melon, pineapple, jicama, cucumber, mango, and more, and places it in a cup or plate. Anyone can prepare a bowl of fruit, but the toppings make the recipe. The fruit is dressed with lime juice, a chili lime seasoning (typically Tajin), and Chamoy, which is a salty sweet condiment that has a touch of spice.

Now, both Chamoy and Tajin are not the healthiest of ingredients, so you somewhat negate the health benefits of the fruits you eat by drowning them in both of these. The good news is that you can make a healthier rendition of a fruit cart staple. You can use chili powder, lime juice, fresh orange juice, and a hint of agave to flavor your already sweet and delicious fruit. But why add the jicama? Well, jicama is a tuber that exhibits a crisp, crunchy texture and mildly nutty flavor. It is a fun way to get fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports healthy digestion. Plus, jicama offers an assortment of antioxidant compounds that may help prevent cell damage and oxidative stress!

What if you are not a fan of spice? You can opt out of the chili powder entirely, or you can choose to reduce the amount and increase as you get more comfortable with the spice level. With the addition of two citrus juices and agave, though, your palate should be just fine!

The Best Foods To Eat For People With High Blood Pressure https://www.dherbs.com/articles/the-best-foods-to-eat-for-people-with-high-blood-pressure/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 09:24:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=175708

If you have hypertension, or high blood pressure, you have likely been told to make several lifestyle adjustments by a number of healthcare professionals. Dietary changes, regular exercise, stress reduction, and more can help naturally lower blood pressure, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Your diet, however, is one of the best places to start, as natural nutrients pack more beneficial compounds that benefit cardiovascular health.

Avoid Processed Foods

Generally speaking, you should avoid all processed foods, especially ultra-processed foods, when you have high blood pressure. Those foods include refined carbs and sugars, packaged sweets, sodas, energy drinks, deli meats, bottled sauces, and more. Instead, it’s better to focus on consuming fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and lean protein, such as wild caught fish and organic chicken.

When you get nutrients through whole foods, instead of supplements, the body can use them more efficiently. Various studies indicate that separating a single nutrient, such as vitamin C or omega-3 fatty acids, and concentrating it into pill form is not as effective as it is when in natural food form.

What Is High Blood Pressure?

Often referred to as the “silent killer,” high blood pressure affects nearly 50% of the U.S. adult population. The American Heart Association (AHA) states that the criteria for high blood pressure are:

  • Normal blood pressure: less than 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)
  • Elevated blood pressure: systolic between 120 and 129 mmHg and diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg
  • Stage 1: systolic between 130 and 139 mmHg or diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg
  • Stage 2: systolic at least 140 mmHg or diastolic at least 90 mmHg
  • Hypertensive crisis: systolic over 180 mmHg or diastolic over 120 mmHg, with people requiring prompt changes in medication if there are no other health issues

If you are worried about blood pressure, the first step is to have your pressure checked by a healthcare professional. After determining the status of your blood pressure, you can take appropriate actions and start eating more of the following foods, especially if your pressure is on the higher side.

Salt-Free Seasonings

Salt is hidden in many seasoning blends, such as Old Bay, steak seasoning, rotisserie seasoning, and most other blends. Cut down on the amount of salt you use by utilizing different herbs and spices. We are referring to seasonings like basil, parsley, paprika, turmeric, garlic powder, white pepper, curry powder, chili powder, marjoram, etc. You understand the point, right? Dried herbs and spices can help reduce salt intake because they do not contain added sodium that regular seasoning blends have. Onion salt or garlic salt, for example, should be avoided. Instead, opt for onion powder or garlic powder.

Oat Bran

Oatmeal can be a great breakfast choice, so long as you do not eat the flavored oatmeal packets. Those are highly problematic because they are seemingly healthy, but rich in sugar, sodium, and processed ingredients. Instead of oatmeal packets, choose oat bran, which is a great source of fiber, a nutrient that may help lower blood pressure and improve digestive health. Oat bran also contains soluble fiber, which has demonstrated an ability to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. You can also choose old-fashioned oats or steel cut oats, which are the least processed of other oat varieties.

Enjoy Bananas

Health experts recommend that people with high blood pressure consume bananas because they are particularly rich in potassium. Various studies indicate that people with hypertension have an increased need for potassium, which some people tend to lack in their daily diets. A lack of potassium can impact heart rate and muscle function. Additionally, bananas are rich in fiber, which may help lower blood pressure as well.

Eat Flaxseed

Flaxseed, which comes from the flax plant, is rich in flaxseed oil, which is thought to reduce high blood pressure. Researchers attribute this to the impressive omega-3 fatty acid content. When you crush flax seeds into flaxseed meal (ground flaxseed), the body has an easier time absorbing the omega-3s. That’s why we recommend people to use this version.

Eat Lima Beans

Most beans, lima beans included, are great sources of fiber and protein. Lima beans happen to be a great food choice for people who want to naturally lower blood pressure. They are higher in potassium than most other beans, and potassium can help reduce sodium levels in the body. The best way to enjoy lima beans is to buy the uncooked versions and boil them in water until tender. Canned varieties can be questionable, due to the fact that many canned beans contain lots of salt. If you find a can with “no salt added” on the label, feel free to enjoy it!

The Humble Potato

Before we get to the good stuff, this isn’t your hall pass to enjoy fries all day long. A regular Idaho potato is a great source of potassium, which works to lower blood pressure. Potatoes are also great sources of fiber, in addition to being cholesterol- and fat-free. You can enjoy a baked potato, just make sure that you don’t dump dollops of sour cream all over it. Additionally, try not to load it up with cheese and bacon because that will detract from the health benefits.

No, this is not the comedian Carrot Top’s signature chimichurri recipe. Instead, this recipe is made with actual carrot tops! Carrots don’t typically come with tops, but they usually do if you buy an organic bunch from the store or farmer’s market. And now you have something to make with those lovely, vibrantly green tops.

Chimichurri, for those of you who are unfamiliar with this lovely condiment, is a flavorful herb sauce with roots in both Uruguay and Argentina. It is commonly made with flat-leaf parsley, garlic, olive oil, red wine vinegar, chili flakes, lemon juice, black pepper, and salt. It is classically served with beef, but you can serve it with chicken, seafood, pork, beans, eggs, or vegetables. There are, of course, variations depending on the region, and then you have to factor in secret family recipes. You can make your own version with a plethora of greens, but the flavor may change slightly from the original recipe.

Carrot tops have a strong flavor that is somewhat bitter, so you need other ingredients to balance them. Just make sure to remove the delicate carrot leaves and stems from the thicker central ones. You can discard those thicker, central stems. We added cilantro to help balance the intense carrot greens, in addition to dried oregano, red pepper flakes, garlic, and a handful of other seasonings. One pro tip that we will give you is to let the minced garlic sit in the vinegar for a few minutes. That will mellow the intense garlicky flavor, and that is a culinary tip from us to you. Now go out there and make some chimichurri!

DIY Texturizing Sea Salt Spray https://www.dherbs.com/articles/diy-texturizing-sea-salt-spray/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 09:03:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=175441

It can be difficult to find natural products that benefit your hair. Fortunately for you, this DIY salt spray is a great hair care product.

Every now and again, a hairstyling product comes along that garners a lot of attention. Sea salt spray is that product, and it rose to popularity with the loose and flowing hair style trend. Shirts got boxier and pants got baggier with more natural, relaxed fits replacing skinny or slim-fit items. The same looseness applies to hair as well, because the natural look is where it’s at.

What Is Sea Salt Spray?

The idea behind sea salt spray is that you do not have to hang 10 on a longboard in Malibu, California to achieve ocean-sprayed hair. The spray does not require the offshore winds that contain salt from the Pacific Ocean; rather, it gives your hair a similar look and texture to when you come out of the ocean. Think of sea salt spray as a bottle of concentrated ocean water that adds texture and flow to your locks. The benefit is that you do not have to deal with crowded beaches, sunburns, and sharks to achieve this look!

What Does Sea Salt Spray Do?

First and foremost, sea salt spray adds both volume and texture to your hair. When too much oil and product accumulate on the scalp and hair, hair shafts become weighed down. Plus, the oilier the hair gets, the more hair shafts clump together and lose their life. Sea salt spray works to remove excess buildup, which lightens hair strands so that they can flow independently. The salt in the spray also has a little grit, which helps texturize the hair.

Enhances Natural Curl Pattern Of Hair

Let us quickly break down hair types, which are characterized by density, texture, and curl pattern:

  • Type 1: straight hair
  • Type 2: wavy hair
  • Type 3: curly hair
  • Type 4: coily hair (the most fragile because hair strands are finer with fewer cuticle layers)

Everyone has a different curl pattern based on their hair type. Type 1 has no curl, type 2 has a natural “S” shape, type 3 has round, tight curls, and type 4 has curls with more of a “Z” shape. In order to enhance the natural curl pattern of your hair, apply sea salt spray to when hair and scrunch it with your free hand. The hair shafts will settle deeper into their curl pattern as your hair dries. If you have straight hair, or type 1 hair, you will not a lot of curl from a sea salt spray. The reason for this is because type 1 hair is usually resistant to curling without chemical assistance.

The great thing about this DIY sea salt spray is that it does not make your hair look greasy or hard. Instead, it works to hydrate your hair and control frizz. Plus, it has essential oils that not only add a lovely scent to the spray, but also stimulate hair growth. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, the essential oils will assist in protecting hair from sun damage, while simultaneously encouraging new hair growth. Just know that this is not a hair growth product; rather, it contains ingredients with properties that may help encourage healthier hair or stimulate the scalp

DIY Sea Salt Spray

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon Epsom salt
  • 1 tablespoon organic sugar
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 10 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 1 cup distilled water (hot but not boiling)

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients (except for the hot water) to a spray bottle, preferably an amber glass spray bottle. The dark nature of the glass will help preserve the health properties of the essential oils.
  • Pour the hot water in until the bottle is full, leaving a little room for the sprayer to go in the bottle.
  • Screw on the top and shake until all of the ingredients are dissolved.
  • When ready, spritz the sea salt spray into dry hair and scrunch until the spray dries. You can also blow dry your hair on low as you scrunch to accelerate the natural curling process.

If you are familiar with the content we post, then you know we laugh at the idea of a salad being a simple side dish. We direct the spotlight on the salad, allowing it to take center stage as the main course. You just need to pack it with plenty of cruciferous and colorful vegetables, heart-healthy nuts, savory beans, avocados, berries, and, most importantly, an incredible dressing.

Make It Colorful

In order to make the perfect salad, you want to include as many nutrient-dense, filling ingredients as possible. If you can make it as colorful as possible, that is a bonus. The reason you want to include colorful foods, such as blueberries, purple cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, or bell peppers, is to diversify your antioxidant intake. This relates back to the concept of “eating the rainbow.” Eating this way not only ensures that you eat a wide range of fruits and vegetables, but also that you eat as many vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients as possible. Continue reading to learn about other tips to make a great post-holiday detox salad

Start With The Greens

Greens will form the base of your salad, but you don’t have to be traditional with your choice of leaves. Some people enjoy crispy romaine, while others prefer the diversity of spring mixed greens. Kale makes for an excellent salad base, so long as you remove the thick stems and chop it finely. Arugula is a great choice if you water a peppery base, and shredded Brussels sprouts or cabbage work well as bases for slaws. The point is that green vegetables are some of the healthiest foods on the planet! Some people abide by the phrase, “The more you eat green, the more you get lean.”

Don’t Be Afraid Of Onions

Onions, garlic, and other members of the allium family, exhibit unique flavor profiles. They have a strong bite, but a lot of health benefits come with that intensity. For example, onions exhibit impressive anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties because of their sulfide compounds. The same compounds that make your eyes tear up benefit your health! If you need to tame the intensity of onions, soak them in a little sea salt and lemon/lime juice. You can also crush up fresh garlic to incorporate into your salad dressing. Fun fact: crushing the garlic actually releases the health properties!

Bring Legumes To The Party

Legumes are naturally rich in fiber and protein, two things that help fill you up. When you add them to salads, they add a starchy creaminess that is very hard to replicate. In fact, you keep aiming for black beans, kidney beans, or garbanzo beans bite after bite! Most beans are naturally rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, in addition to resistant starch. Plus, several studies found that they exhibit anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dress For Success

Before you dig into your big bowl of greens, colorful vegetables and fruits, onions, and legumes, you need a proper dressing. You can go with a simple vinaigrette using olive oil, your favorite vinegar, and sea salt and pepper, or you can blend several ingredients into a dressing. If you prefer creamy dressings, consider blending avocado, cilantro, olive oil, lime juice, cumin, and salt and pepper. Once your dressing is ready to go, drizzle it over your salad, toss to coat all the ingredients, and serve. When ready to eat, you can top with some almonds, walnuts, cashews, or other nuts and seeds of your choice.

Homemade nut butter is just the way to go, folks. You only need two ingredients and a food processor to make a smooth and creamy nut butter that is free of preservatives and other unnecessary ingredients. Unlike store bought brands, this macadamia nut butter is free of palm oil, lectins, peanuts, and added sugars. That means that this nut butter is raw vegan, Whole30-approved, Paleo, grain-free, gluten-free, keto, and sugar-free. The subtle hint of sea salt perfectly complements the robust macadamia nuts.

Is homemade macadamia nut butter better than store bought varieties? While both are great options, making your own allows you to control the ingredients and blend until you reach your desired consistency. Perhaps you enjoy a nut butter that is just between chunky and smooth. Maybe you like nut butter to be velvety smooth, and you can have control over that when you make your own. Plus, homemade macadamia nut butter is nearly identical in price as the store bought version. Depending on which stores you have access to, you may or may not always see macadamia nut butter available. If you find raw macadamia nuts, though, you can transform them into a luxurious butter.

You will need a food processor for this recipe because a blender just won’t cut it. To achieve a smooth nut butter, you will probably have to blend for three to five minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides periodically. Just keep blending, scraping down the sides, and blending again until you achieve a smooth consistency. Once you are satisfied, spoon the butter into a container, seal the lid, and refrigerate. Use when ready.
