]]>

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects about 25-35 million people in the United States. It can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and other potential symptoms on a regular basis. That said, ongoing research continues to inform health experts about the realities of this condition.

It can be difficult to distinguish the facts from the myths regarding IBS, though. If you believe one or more things that are actually false, you cheat yourself out of getting proper treatment for the condition. That’s why this article aims to tell the truths about common IBS myths

Myth 1: Leaky Gut Causes IBS

The gut has a protective barrier that prevents harmful substances from entering. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when that barrier is somewhat broken down. Although some studies indicate a connection between leaky gut syndrome and IBS, there is no conclusion on whether or not it is a direct cause. Leaky gut syndrome is hypothetical at this point because it is not recognized as a medical diagnosis. That means that treatments for leaky gut may not work on IBS symptoms. In fact, experts think that leaky gut syndrome is a potential side effect of common inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis

Myth 2: IBD And IBS Are The Same

Not only are they not the same, but they are also not interchangeable. IBS and IBD are two distinct conditions and although they can have similar symptoms, they differ in how they begin and how doctors treat them. IBS is a function gastrointestinal (GI) condition, meaning that symptoms occur because of the way the GI tract functions. IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, triggers chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. It is more serious and can lead to cuts in the gut lining and ulcers.

Myth 3: IBS Isn’t A Big Deal

IBS can affect overall quality of life, as symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits, and more. That is why this condition can induce physical discomfort, psychological distress, and social isolation. You also have to understand IBS has an unpredictability factor, in that flares can worsen symptoms and feelings of anxiety. A 2023 study found that IBS was associated with an increase in health care costs, including visits to hospitals and mental health clinics.

Myth 4: IBS Is All In Your Head

It is highly inaccurate to say that IBS is all in your head. Although the psychological distress can worsen symptoms, IBS is a real GI disorder characterized by bloating, altered bowel habits, and abdominal pain. Many biological factors can contribute to IBS, including changes in gut bacteria, changes in gut mobility, visceral hypersensitivity, and genetics. Like many other conditions, though, mental health plays a role in IBS. Anxiety can worsen symptoms and a strong social support system and great mental health can ease some IBS symptoms.

Myth 5: Fiber Cures IBS

There is no current cure for IBS and the condition’s symptoms can vary from person to person. Treatment, for this reason, is signature to each person’s needs. Fiber can help people with IBS manage symptoms, though. People with IBS-D may benefit from consuming more soluble fiber, which works to absorb water and add bulk to stool. Oatmeal, legumes, psyllium husk, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are great sources of soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber, which accelerates the movement of waste through the digestive tract, may improve symptoms of people with IBS-C. Great sources of insoluble fiber include fruits, vegetables, beans, wheat brain, and nuts.

Myth 6: People With IBS Can Never Eat “Trigger Foods”

It is true that certain foods can trigger IBS symptoms more than others, but it can be helpful to think of your tolerance to certain foods like a bucket. The size of the bucket will be different for everyone. Some people have larger buckets than others, meaning they can tolerate more foods that are classic IBS triggers, such as caffeine, spicy foods, and high-fat foods. People with smaller buckets tend to have a lower threshold for IBS trigger foods. The bottom line is that some people with IBS can tolerate more trigger foods than others.

There are several reasons that result in a poor night of sleep. Your partner snored all night, stress from work kept you up, too much light entered the window, or you looked at screens for hours leading up to bedtime. What did you eat in the evening before bed, though? Although you may not think that food is the culprit, certain foods that you eat at night can affect your sleep in a major way.

Eating right before you go to bed is never a good idea, as eating too close to bedtime can take a toll on the digestive system. Since getting a good night’s rest is integral to your overall health, you may want to consider avoiding certain foods before you hit the hay. It can be a challenge to take a break from your favorite evening snacks, but try it out to see if your sleep improves. Avoid the following foods before bed if you want to improve the quality of your sleep.

High-Fat Foods

Your affinity for a late night ice cream pint may have to come to an end if you want to enjoy restful sleep. Additionally, a late night stop at a greasy taco truck or salty burger shack isn’t doing your sleep any favors. Fatty foods take longer to digest because the body has a harder time processing them. Because the digestive system is working hard, it keeps the body awake, or the digestive process disturbs your sleep. A 2016 study found that a diet rich in saturated fat led to less restorative sleep, so just keep that in mind moving forward.

Alcohol

Another late night food item ruining your Zzz’s is alcohol. Alcohol actually makes you feel sleepy, which is why a lot of people like to unwind and relax with a cold one or glass of wine. Even though it may help you fall asleep, studies show that the quality of sleep after drinking alcohol is not great. The reason for this is because alcohol acts as a diuretic, leading to more midnight trips to the bathroom. Alcohol also makes it more difficult to reach REM sleep, which is the final stage of sleep that regulates mood and improves memory retention. Plus, the more you drink at night, the less rested you feel in the morning because of hangovers and reduced activity levels.

Chips

Although they seem innocent, chips are greasy, high-fat, high-sodium, processed snacks that can ruin your sleep. Studies show that greasy foods like chips can actually increase the likelihood of nightmares. Not only will you feel awake because your digestive system is in overdrive, but you may wake up in a panic because of nightmares. If you must snack on chips, do so in the afternoon so that your body has enough time to digest them.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is an excellent healthy snack to power you through the day, but it isn’t a wise snack choice before bedtime. The high fiber content in dried fruit can rev up the digestive system in an uncomfortable way. While trying to go to sleep, you may experience painful gas and bloating. Plus, the high sugar content of dried fruit can lead to an unwanted sugar rush that can keep you up longer than you want.

A Late Night Cup Of Coffee

This seems self-explanatory, but having a cup of coffee too close to bedtime can wreck your sleep. Oftentimes, a restful night of sleep is preceded by a specific routine, which varies from person to person. A cup of coffee is never in that pre-sleep routine, and if it is then it shouldn’t be. Caffeine also hides in chocolates, soft drinks, energy drinks, tea, and other food sources besides coffee. So if you consume these items before bed, you are probably too alert to fall asleep.

Spicy Foods

Sleep experts say that a spicy curry is one of the worst meals you can eat in the evening because it can ruin sleep. Eating spicy foods can increase the risk of heartburn and acid reflux, both of which interfere with sleep. The discomfort you feel when you lie down can be so intense that going to sleep is impossible. Capsaicin, the compound that exists in spicy foods like hot peppers, may be the culprit behind your sleep troubles. As you relax before bed, the body’s core temperature starts to drop. Capsaicin can interfere with this process by raising your core temperature, leaving you feeling wide awake.

It’s possible for every person to experience heartburn or acid reflux once in a blue moon. If these symptoms occur two to three times per week, it’s very possible that you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). And while over-the-counter prescriptions are available to calm symptoms, you can often manage them by steering clear of certain trigger foods. To help combat symptoms, experts advise that you avoid certain foods that make GERD worse which are listed below.

What Is GERD?

GERD, sometimes referred to as chronic acid reflux, is a condition that occurs when acid-containing contents in the stomach lead into the esophagus, throat, and mouth. As a result, the stomach’s acid forms a backwash up through the esophagus into the throat and mouth. The backwash causes a burning sensation in the esophagus and sour taste in the mouth. In a healthy person, the esophageal sphincter (lower part of the esophagus) should not allow food and acid from the stomach back into the esophagus. Unfortunately for people with GERD, that does not happen, and a burning, uncomfortable sensation ensues.

Many people with GERD are familiar with over-the-counter antacids to relieve the burning sensation. Another way to reduce the risk of symptoms is by modifying diet and lifestyle habits. Many medical experts agree that certain foods make symptoms worse.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes and tomato-based sauces or food products can cause GERD symptoms. That means you should avoid tomato juice, salsas with tomatoes, and any other tomato dish. Dietitians believe that this is because of the acidic nature of tomatoes. As a result, they can increase the stomach’s acid levels.

Spicy Foods

Several studies indicate that eating spicy foods can cause burning symptoms in people with gastrointestinal disorders. Capsaicin, the chemical compound that gives peppers their spice, can irritate certain parts of the esophagus. A 2017 study found that hot, spicy stews increased GERD symptoms in more than 50% of participants.

Caffeine

If you drink caffeinated beverages daily, this is going to be a hard pill to swallow. Both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American College of Gastroenterology suggest that people with GERD limit caffeine consumption. Be it tea, coffee, or certain food products, caffeine can induce GERD symptoms and irritate the esophagus. Try your best to focus on water instead.

Fatty Meats

Bologna, sausage, bacon, and other similar meats fall under the fatty meats umbrella. The combination of excess sodium and saturated fats instigate GERD symptoms. The reason for this is because they decrease tension in the lower part of the esophagus. When it cannot close properly, it allows acid to flow up from the stomach. Additionally, fatty foods take longer to leave the stomach because they are more difficult to digest. This is why it’s common to experience regurgitation after consuming fatty meats.

Fried Foods

One of the primary GERD or acid reflux offenders is fast food. There’s a direct connection between the consumption of fries, donuts, fried chicken, processed foods, and convenience foods and GERD symptoms. One study found that consuming fried onion rings, French fries, potato chips, and other processed fried foods increased the risk of reflux symptoms. Avoiding these foods will not only help reduce GERD symptoms, but also reduce your consumption of saturated fats, which positively impacts heart health.

Alcohol

Another major GERD offender is alcohol, which can cause several problems. Not only does it impair vision and judgment, but it also relaxes the lower part of the esophagus. Alcohol is similar to fatty meats in that way. Additionally, alcohol increases stomach acid and impairs how the stomach empties. If you have GERD it’s best to avoid alcohol or drink it in moderation to see if it causes symptoms.

Soda

Soda can aggravate acid reflux symptoms in two ways. It is similar to coffee in that a lot of it contains caffeine, which irritates the esophagus. The second irritating factor is the carbonation, which inflates the stomach and its internal pressure. This combination, along with the relaxant effect of caffeine on the lower part of the esophagus, can trigger GERD symptoms. Energy drinks tend to have a similar effect as well.

So you just tested positive for COVID-19 and you have to isolate in the house. The end of quarantine seems like an eternity away and you have to figure out how to occupy your time. Although it’s unfair, some people have no symptoms or mild symptoms, while others can barely move and feel like death. No matter what your symptoms are, it’s important to remember that you have a virus in your system and boosting immunity is paramount.

As with any sickness, proper nutrition and hydration are vital aspects to a speedy recovery. Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains help diversify your nutritional intake and replenish the body with antioxidants. Hydrating can also expedite the waste elimination process and keep the body feeling healthy. Drinking water helps to regulate body temperature and transport nutrients and compounds in the blood.

There are foods that you shouldn’t eat after receiving a positive COVID-19 test result. This is because certain foods can slow the recovery process or impair immune function. It’s beneficial to avoid processed foods because they contain added sugars, preservatives, sodium, and unhealthy fats. It’s also beneficial to avoid fried foods, sugary drinks, and the other foods in this article.

Avoid Spicy Foods

Typically, health experts encourage people to eat spicy foods if they are feeling down because it promotes decongestion. In the case of COVID-19, however, it’s better to avoid spicy foods because they can irritate the throat and cause you to cough more. If congestion is the issue, you may benefit from a little heat in your food. To play it safe, though, eat on the milder side.

Fried Foods

Greasy, fried, fast foods are rich in unhealthy fats. Consuming these foods can impair immune function, and your immune system needs all the help it can get if you have COVID-19. Additionally, these foods can negatively affect gut microbiome, which also suppresses immunity. During the frying process, foods become calorically dense, as the outer layer is replete with fat or oil. The oils in which people fry foods can contain trans fat, which has the ability to increases LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

Processed Foods

If it comes in a package and contains processed ingredients, it’s best to avoid it. Sodium, preservatives, additives, dyes, artificial flavors, and added sugars can cause inflammation in the body. The higher amount of omega-6 fatty acids and sodium further the inflammatory process. If you have a higher amount of inflammation in the body, the immune system cannot perform optimally. That leaves you more susceptible to developing symptoms and extends recovery time from the illness.

Sugary Drinks

It can be tempting to crack open a can of sugary soda or packaged juice, but many of these beverages contain added sugars. This also goes for a carton or bottle orange juice, which many people believe is the best source of vitamin C. You can drink orange juice, but it’s best to drink cold-pressed or freshly made varieties to ensure quality freshness. As stated in the previous paragraphs, added sugars contribute to inflammation in the body. If you crave carbonation, consider sparkling water to get your fix of bubbles.

Red Meat

Yet another food item that can promote inflammation in the body. Red meat has a high amount of saturated fat, which increases both inflammatory markers and cholesterol levels. Instead of eating foods with saturated fats, it’s better to enjoy foods with monounsaturated fats. Some of the best foods that contain monounsaturated fats include avocados, wild caught salmon, olive oil, nuts, and legumes like beans and lentils.
