]]>

As a perennial plant of the parsley family, gotu kola grows in many parts of the world, although it is native to southern Asia. Gotu kola, also known as Centella asiatica, is a small herbaceous plant that has been incorporated in various alternative medicinal practices for centuries. Native to several Asian countries, gotu kola is widely recognized for its potential health benefits, especially for its ability to positively impact cognitive function and overall health.

Gotu kola’s active constituents, namely the saponins and triterpenoids, are of great interest to researchers. Some of these compounds include madecassoside, madasiatic acid, and asiaticoside, all of which are responsible for the health properties. Numerous studies have explored the effects of gotu kola on various aspects of human health, and we highlight those findings in the following five points.

Cognitive Function

According to several studies, gotu kola may offer neuroprotective properties, promoting cognitive function and improving memory and learning abilities. In a small clinical study consisting of older adults with an average age of 65, gotu kola supplementation helped improve mood and overall cognitive function. In a systematic review, however, gotu kola did not seem to improve cognitive function. It did improve mood by improving alertness and relieving anger. Additional Research suggests that gotu kola may enhance nerve growth factor levels in the brain, which may help protect against cognitive decline.

May Reduce Anxiety And Stress

In an animal study from 2016, researchers noted that gotu kola exhibited an anti-anxiety effect on sleep-deprived male mice. Sleep deprivation is a common source of anxiety, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Other studies found that gotu kola may have an anxiolytic effect, meaning it can help reduce anxiety and stress levels. Researchers believe that it can modulate the release of certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine, which help regulate mood.

Wound Healing

Topical application of gotu kola extracts may promote wound healing because it works to stimulate collagen synthesis. Additionally, gotu kola may enhance the production of connective tissue components. A small clinical trial compared gotu kola to liver sulfadiazine in a study with participants with burn wounds. In the study, gotu kola was in an ointment dosage called Centiderm. The results indicated that the participants benefited from the Centiderm application. In the study, however, burn wounds had to be less than 10% of the total body surface area. More research is necessary to determine gotu kola’s efficacy on wound healing.

Antioxidant Activity

As you may know, antioxidants work to protect cells from oxidative stress and damaging free radicals. Because gotu kola exhibits impressive antioxidant activity, it may work to reduce joint inflammation, cartilage erosion, and bone erosion. Gotu kola’s antioxidant effects also positively impact immune function, which may help protect against chronic diseases.

May Improve Circulation

Historical accounts found that gotu kola extracts have been used as traditional remedies for venous insufficiency, which is characterized by poor blood circulation in the legs. Older research found that gotu kola may be useful in the treatment of varicose veins. Gotu kola exhibits a positive metabolic effect on the connective tissues in vascular walls. Additional research suggests that gotu kola may help relieve leg heaviness and swelling by strengthening blood vessels and improving blood flow.

In closing, it should be noted that while these studies provide promising information and results, more research is still necessary to determine the health benefits. Should you want to experiment with gotu kola supplementation, consider discussing it with your healthcare professional to determine if it is safe for you. You don’t want it to negatively interact with other medications or conditions that you have.

Yoga is an effective form of exercise that promotes flexibility and relaxation. Various studies confirm that certain yoga poses can reduce bloating, improve posture, and relieve back pain. Yoga can improve your flexibility and range of motion, and it may even aid with the management of varicose veins. Although yoga is not a cure, the various poses may relieve soreness and swelling in the legs that result from varicose veins.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that are generally benign. For many people, varicose veins have no symptoms and they are merely a cosmetic concern. In some cases, they can cause aching pain and discomfort, which can indicate an underlying circulatory issue. Basically varicose veins result because of a failure in the one-way valves inside the veins. Instead of pumping blood in one direction toward the heart, the failed valves cause blood to leak backwards. That creates a pooling of blood and causes veins to bulge.

Although the exact cause is unknown, varicose veins primarily result due to hereditary factors. If they run in your family, you have a higher chance of developing them. Another risk factor is if you work in a profession that requires you to stand all day, especially if you don’t move much. And while yoga cannot cure the problem, the relaxation that these poses provide may prevent the condition from worsening. You may even enhance limb movement! Read on to learn how to do the yoga poses

Standing Forward Bend

This pose works to enhance blood flow throughout the entire body. It works to stretch the hamstrings and calves, which are likely spots of varicose veins. To do the stretch, stand up straight with your feet hip-distance apart. On an exhale, hinge at the hips to bend forward and reach your hands toward the ground. If you can touch the ground, then great, but you can always rest your hands on your shins if you cannot touch the floor. You can also grab your elbows and simply hang in the stretch. Hold this position for about 10 seconds and then release.

Legs Up The Wall

Legs up the wall is highly beneficial for fatigued legs because it enhances blood circulation and aims to flush out toxins from the lower extremities. This pose is very simple and helps relieve pressure in the calves, which is great for people with varicose veins. Sit up straight with your right shoulder touching the wall. In a fluid motion, roll onto your back and swing your legs up the walls, planting your arms on the ground to the sides for support. Scoot your butt as close to the wall as possible. Breathe deeply in this pose for as long as you want, ideally 30 seconds minimum.

Mountain Pose

Mountain pose is one of the most basic yoga poses, but that doesn’t mean that you can breeze through it. This pose helps you achieve proper alignment and works to strengthen the knees, thighs, and ankles. Stand up straight with your feet hip-distance apart and tighten your core and thigh muscles. Strengthen the inner arches of the ankles and feel the energy pass from your feet all the way up to your head. Breathe deeply and direct your gaze forward. Hold this pose for five deep breaths and then release.

Fish Pose

Some say that Fish pose is one of the best poses for people with varicose veins. The reason for that is because it works on various systems at the same time, stretching your feet and legs to relieve stress and cramps. By relaxing the legs, you regulate blood flow throughout the body. Lie flat on your back and extend your legs out. Create a gentle curve in your back to rest the crown of your head on the mat. Support yourself with your elbows and forearms on the ground right beside you. If this is uncomfortable, place a long pillow or bolster along your spine and relax on this pose that way. Hold for 10 seconds and then release.

Wind Relieving Pose

This pose aims to move stagnant lymph and venous blood. It may also relieve cramps or fatigue in the legs by loosening the muscles and joints in the hips and knees. Lie flat on your back and draw your knees to your chest. Lift your head off the ground and grab the outsides of your shins with your hands, aiming to bring your forehead to your knees. Hold this pose for five deep breaths and then release.

The post 6 Ways Your Vagina Changes As You Age appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

As if childhood, puberty, and adolescence weren’t enough, the vagina, and the surrounding area, change as you age. Sadly, these changes aren’t the most-discussed topics, meaning that women may be unprepared for the realities of aging lady flowers. We want you to be prepared for the effects Father Time has on the body, even the vulva and vagina.

During your late 20s and 30s, progesterone and estrogen course through your system. Higher estrogen levels can cause vaginal changes like more discharge. It’s also more common for the first pregnancy to take place between the 20s and 30s, which can affect how the vagina looks and feels. Estrogen levels can fluctuate after pregnancy and during breastfeeding, leading to uncomfortable vaginal dryness. These estrogen changes are typically temporary, but they can cause unfamiliar changes to the vagina. Read on to learn about the other ways the vagina can change as you age.

The Vulva Changes

It’s important to note that, while closely connected, the vagina and vulva are two different things. The vulva is the outside, and the vagina is the canal. The reason for this clarification is because women often talk about their vagina, when in reality they mean their vulva, the lips, labia majora, labia minora, urethra, or clitoris. The vulva doesn’t really change from your late teens to your 40s, and even into your 50s. At some point, women can experience vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) that results from the gradual loss of estrogen that comes with perimenopause and menopause. The tissue can become paler and smoother, while the labia can become less distinct. This natural process is nothing to freak out about, though.

You May Experience Vaginal Dryness

A healthy vagina is well-lubricated, but you may develop vaginal dryness as you age. As estrogen levels decline, the vagina can become dryer because estrogen helps maintain moisture in the vaginal lining. When levels are low, the vagina walls become thinner and dryer, according to health professionals. During your lifetime, there are three main hormonal assaults on the body that cause estrogen levels to fall: breastfeeding, perimenopause, and menopause. In those periods when vaginal tissues lack lubrication, it’s possible to experience discomfort in the vagina, soreness in the vulva, burning or itching, bleeding after sex due to tears in vaginal walls, needing to pee more often, and not wanting to have sex.

The Hair May Change Down There

The graying and thinning of hair down in the vaginal region is quite common as you age. What you may not know is that it’s common to lose hair. According to experts, just like any other hair on the body, pubic hair starts to thin out and disappear during and after different hormonal stages in life. During menopause, the hair may grow slower and will be less thick. Medical conditions and the use of certain medications, both of which come with age, can thin out pubic hair. The new appearance may take some time to get used to, but you may find that it’s more convenient to have fewer hairs down there.

The Vagina Itself Can Change

While VVA affects the vulva, it can also affect the vagina. The loss of estrogen can dramatically change the appearance and function of the vagina. It’s very possible for the vaginal opening to shrink, and so can the length of the vaginal canal. Additionally, you may also experience frequent irritation, which results from the thinning of vaginal walls. According to surveys, about 20-50% of women start to notice changes, especially during sex because it can be more painful. Sex itself isn’t the main culprit of itchiness, though. Some women experience itchiness when walking or doing exercise. Fortunately, there are many moisturizers and lubricants that can provide temporary relief for that discomfort.

You May Develop Varicose Veins

Those bigger, bluish veins that tend to crop up in the legs as you age can also occur near the vulvar region. Although varicose veins mainly occur in the feet and legs, they can also surface near the vulva. Prominent veins can pop up during pregnancy because of the boost in blood flow to the pelvic area. That causes the veins to bulge, according to health experts. Other risk factors for vulvar varicosities include standing for long periods of time and obesity, both of which increase pressure on the veins in the lower body.

You May Be More Prone To Vaginal Infections

The vagina is normally acidic, which is the right pH balance for the protective organisms that live in harmony down there. Anything that disrupts that delicate balance can increase the risk of vaginal infection. As we’ve covered in this article, change is inevitable with age. That means that the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause can disturb the vagina’s microbiome. This disturbance can lead to vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.

Beets are naturally rich in vitamins A, B, and C, all of which assist in boosting metabolism and lowering bad cholesterol levels. The nutrients in beets are also beneficial for stress reduction. Varicose veins can result from high stress levels because stress negatively impacts the cardiovascular system. This can put undo stress on the heart and weaken cardiac output, compromising the venous system.

The classic saying is, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but there’s a good chance that taking a walk can help you avoid the doctor’s office. Because walking is a low-impact exercise, it is a great starting place for people who are trying to get in shape. Walking on a regular basis can help improve digestion, boost your mood, and help you lose weight in the process.

Walking Is An Easy Habit To Create

It can be hard for a healthy habit to take hold, especially when you make them unrealistic. Walking is a very easy activity that is more effective than you think at propelling you towards a healthier lifestyle. Vowing to go to the gym three or four times a week may be more unrealistic than you think. You can walk anywhere, so start walking and experience some of the following benefits.

#1: You’ll Become More “Regular”

Not a lot of people like to talk about poop, but it is one of the primary ways you’re your body eliminates waste. Everyone does not have a properly functioning digestive system, but walking can help change that. Rather than relying on a laxative or certain food to have a bowel movement, start walking because it stimulates digestion and helps you pass food more efficiently.

#2: It Reduces Stress

Being in nature has been proven to help reduce stress levels. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Exercise also works to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body. Let yourself decompress after a long day at the office by taking a walk, even if it’s a little chilly outside.

#3: Boosts Your Mood

A recent study showed that walking for at least 30 minutes a day works to modify your nervous system, ultimately helping to decrease anger or hostility. Additionally, if you are walking during the day, the sunlight works to ward off feelings of sadness. If you want to really boost your mood, make your walks social by walking with a friend, colleague, or relative.

#4: You’ll Shed Some Pounds

Walking is one of the best ways to help your body burn fat. The body uses fat for fuel during your walk, which helps you get rid of unwanted weight. Walking also helps to boost your metabolism, which plays an important role in losing weight.

#5: Your Legs Will Look Great

Getting older means that your risk of developing varicose veins increases. Walking has been proven to improve circulation in the legs. Leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause blood to remain in the lower legs, while walking helps to push blood back up to the heart and lungs, ultimately reducing your risk of varicose veins. Daily walking also works to reduce swelling or restlessness in the legs.

Walking can have the aforementioned benefits, but you have to work on eating healthy to have the best results. Exercise and diet go hand in hand when it comes to becoming a healthier person. Don’t hinder yourself by eating unhealthy foods. Check out our recipe section to make healthier meals.

When picking out what to wear for the day, we don’t think anyone ever says, “I’d really like to show off my varicose veins today.” The truth is that you shouldn’t have to worry about varicose veins, even though many people feel self-conscious about them. If you feel embarrassed about varicose or spider veins, we have stumbled on a natural remedy that can provide safe relief.

Roughly 50% of American adults have varicose veins, which are veins that become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Generally blue or dark purple, varicose veins mostly occur in the legs and feet. Because veins only carry blood to the heart, they only have one-way valves, which means that blood cannot flow backwards. If the valves fail, blood can build up in the vein(s) and doesn’t flow back to the heart like it should.

Risk Factors For Developing Varicose Veins

 • Poor circulation
 • Obesity
 • Genetics
 • Constipation
 • Standing for long periods
 • Sedentary lifestyle

How Do Horse Chestnuts Provide Relief?

Aescin helps to strengthen venous walls, capillaries, and valves. People with varicose veins typically have a higher count of enzymes that weaken capillary walls. The aescin in horse chestnuts help to block these enzymes from multiplying. Horse chestnuts also help to improve circulation, working to prevent pooling in veins, because they contain Coumadin, which helps to thin the blood.

How To Make Horse Chestnut Oil

Horse chestnut oil is a great topical remedy for varicose veins. When you consistently use the oil, you should notice that your varicose veins shrink in size. As with any remedy be sure to check with your health care provider and make sure that you aren’t allergic to the ingredients.

Ingredients:

 • Horse chestnuts
 • Olive oil
 • Measuring utensils
 • Unbleached cotton cloth or unbleached paper coffee filters

Instructions:

 • Grind the horse chestnuts to a fine crumble, or as fine as you can. You can use a coffee grinder or high-speed blender to do this step. You can also go the old-fashioned way and put the nuts in a bag and pound them with a hammer or meat tenderizer.
 • Once you finish grinding the chestnuts, separate ½ cup of powder. Then measure out 2 cups of olive oil. Pour the ground chestnuts into the oil and stir well.
 • Pour the oil in a saucepan over very low heat. You want to maintain an oil temperature of about 110 degrees Fahrenheit for about 2 hours to let the properties of the chestnuts infuse.
 • Let the oil cool once the heating process is complete. Then use the cotton cloth or paper coffee filters to filter strain the oil into a glass jar.
 • Now you have a remedy that you can apply 2 times a day. Massage the oil on your varicose veins for natural relief.

Varicose veins can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. They might cause you to wonder whether or not people are staring. The fact of the matter is that you should feel comfortable in your own body. To help you feel worry-free, we stumbled on a pretty awesome herbal remedy, which can help get rid of varicose veins and more.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are veins that become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Generally blue or dark purple, varicose veins mostly occur in the legs and feet. The reason for this is because standing or walking increases pressure to the veins in the lower part of the body. Varicose veins are very common, especially in women, and about 50% of Americans have them.

The bay leaf has some pretty amazing healing properties. Most people only use bay leaves as a flavoring agent for marinades, stocks, curries, or stews, though. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, you can use bay leaves to make a healing medicinal oil, which has the following benefits:

 • Increases mental activity
 • Calms joint pain
 • Strengthens the immune system
 • Calms the nervous system
 • Treats varicose veins

Here’s What You’ll Need

 • 3 dried bay leaves
 • 4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

Preparation

 • Warm the bay leaves and olive oil in a saucepan over a very low heat. Let this mixture cool and strain through a mesh strainer into a glass jar.
 • Apply this oil to your varicose veins once a day to help them disappear.

Varicose veins are veins that become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Generally blue or dark purple, varicose veins mostly occur in the legs and feet. The reason for this is because standing or walking increases pressure to the veins in the lower part of the body. Varicose veins are a very common condition, especially in women, and about 50% of Americans have them.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

While arteries carry blood from the heart to tissues in the body, veins return blood back to the heart so that blood can keep circulating. Because veins only carry blood to the heart, they only have one-way valves, which disallow blood to flow backwards. If the valves fail, blood builds up in the vein(s) and doesn’t flow back to the heart like it should. The reason varicose veins are commonly in the legs is because they are farthest from the heart and have to fight gravity to travel back to the heart. Common causes for varicose veins are below.

 • Age (aging causes veins to stretch and weaken, causing them to function improperly)
 • Pregnancy
 • Menopause
 • Chronic heart valve conditions (these are commonly congenital)
 • Standing for long periods of time
 • Obesity
 • Pressure on the mid-section of the body

Get Your Blood Flowing

A lot of people who stand for long periods of time or remain stagnant can develop varicose veins, so exercise is a great way to keep the blood flowing. Exercise also helps reduce inflammation, and veins can become inflamed if they aren’t functioning properly. The exercise doesn’t have to be intense; a simple 30-minute walk around the neighborhood is enough to get blood flowing. If you experience pain when exercising, take it slow and ice or heat sore muscles. Try low impact exercises like swimming or bicycling.

Weight Loss

Because obesity can cause varicose veins, it’s a good idea to maintain a healthy weight to reduce pain (if you have it) from varicose veins. In addition to exercising at least 45 minutes a day, a great first step is to switch to a more plant-based diet. Eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, & legumes can provide you with the essential nutrients the body needs. Eliminating meat, dairy products, processed foods, fried foods, refined sugars, and salty foods from you diet can help you on your weight loss journey.

Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods

In addition to eating healthier, look for foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. Fruit and vegetables that are high in fiber, antioxidants, magnesium, and vitamin E can also help reduce symptoms of varicose veins.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a great natural remedy that can help reduce varicose veins. It is a natural cleanser and can help improve circulation and blood flow. You can either apply and massage a little apple cider vinegar topically, or you can mix 1 teaspoon of it in 1 cup of water and drink that solution twice daily.

Cayenne Pepper Is The Truth

Cayenne pepper is almost a miracle solution for varicose veins. Cayenne pepper has a high vitamin C content and can help improve circulation, aiding in providing relief to swollen veins. Mix 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder in 1 cup of water. Drink that solution three times a day for one to two months.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola has been used as an herbal remedy for many years. It has incredible healing properties that can help decrease the swelling, pain, or sensation of heaviness that is common in people with varicose veins. The best way to consume this herb is to make a tea from its leaves. Make tea with 1 teaspoon of Gotu Kola leaves, 1 cup of hot water, and 1 teaspoon of raw, organic honey. Drink this about 2 times every day.

Elevate Your Legs

To improve circulation in your legs, make sure that you elevate them when you relax. This should help increase circulation in your legs. The best way to do this is to lay down and rest your legs on 3-4 pillows, so that the legs are above your heart.

Don’t Wear Tight Clothes

Avoid wearing tight clothes around your groin, waist, and thighs because this can inhibit proper circulation. For women, it’s best to not wear high-heeled shoes and wear low-heeled shoes instead. Low-heeled shoes work your calf muscles more, which is better for your veins.

The veins of the body are like the arteries, however, the veins have little valves on their inner walls to prevent the blood from flowing backward, toward the arteries.

If the valves are impaired, then blood circulation is impaired and blood accumulates in the veins, stretching them. The result is varicose veins.

Causes and Risk Factors

Varicose veins are undoubtedly caused by diet and lifestyle.

It’s common in people who are sedentary (people who spend much time seated and who engage in little to no exercise). Lack of exercise causes the circulation to become impaired, especially when you consider a person’s diet.

Diets rich in meat, dairy products, and refined grains and starches can produce arterial plaque and mucoidal debris, which impair the circulation and leads to a wide variety of circulatory diseases and disorders.

Varicose veins can also result from being obese, from excessive or repetitive heavy lifting of things, constipation, phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), and can sometimes develop as the result of pregnancy. They are also common among people who sit with their legs crossed.

Symptoms

Varicose veins are:

 • dark greenish or somewhat bluish in color

Natural Healing Solutions

Varicose veins can be healed, just like everything else, especially if you believe and have faith in natural healing.

Herbs

Herbs are great for the healing of all disease. Herbs themselves do not do the healing. They only assist the body in healing itself. Good herbs that help heal varicose veins include herbs that improve circulation, such as:

 • Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum)
 • Cinnamon
 • Ginger and
 • Butcher’s Broom

Herbs that are deobstruant in nature are:

 • Manjistha
 • Bayberry, and
 • Goldenseal

Herbs that are astringent in nature are:

Other helpful herbs for the healing of varicose veins include:

 • Horse Chestnut (by far the best herb available for the healing of varicose veins)
 • Wood Betony
 • Gotu Kola
 • Horsetail
 • Yunnan Toucha
 • Gingko Biloba, and
 • Prickly Ash Bark

Essential Oils

Good essential oils that have therapeutic value for varicose veins include:

 • Cajeput and
 • Yarrow

First apply carrier oil (i.e. olive, coconut, sweet almond, grape seed, jojoba, or avocado) and then add a few drops of essential oil to your hands and massage into the legs and then stroke the veins upward and downward which helps to move the flow of blood in the arteries and veins. This technique can be done for about 5-10 minutes, daily or 3-5 times per week.

Exercise

Movement gets the blood circulating and you need good circulation. Whether you work out at the gym, walk, jog, swim, or perform stretching/yoga, pilates, tai chi, or qi chong, simply MOVE YOUR BODY!

Antigravity exercise is greatly beneficial for healing varicose veins as well as poor blood circulation as this exercise (done for at least 15 minutes per day) causes gravity to work on your behalf by pulling all liquids downward to your head as well as pulling prolapsed organs (i.e. uterus) back into place. With antigravity exercise, your feet are higher than your head allowing circulation to travel downward. You can use a slant board or simply prop your legs up on a sofa or couch or a wall.

Dietary Intervention

Change your diet to a raw foods/vegan diet. The more raw foods in the diet, the better! You would be wise to give up meat, dairy products, refined grains and starches, and commercially processed so-called foods. Try mock vegan or meatless substitutes, dairy-free substitutes, whole grains, etc.

Drink plenty of good drinking water (distilled or alkaline, alkaline water is best). Drink plenty of vegetable juice daily (fruit juice, too).
