  • 1/4 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 25 drops lemon essential oil
  • 12 drops geranium essential oil
  • 5 drops carrot seed essential oil
  • 1/4 cup filtered water

Instructions:

  • Add the sweet almond oil, rosehip oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax pellets to a medium sized glass bowl. Place this bowl on top of a saucepan with a few inches of water to create a makeshift double boiler. 
  • Place this over medium heat and stir occasionally until all of the ingredients have fully melted and combined. 
  • Remove from heat and pour in the vitamin E oil and essential oils, stirring slowly as you add them in. 
  • Either pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer or add it to a mixing bowl. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes to cool. 
  • Remove the bowl from the fridge and decide whether you want to use a stand mixer or use an electric hand mixer to whip it until it becomes a thick cream. If using a stand mixer, make sure to use the whisk attachment. Start whisking slowly and then increase the speed. 
  • Spoon the mixture into a clean glass jar and apply to the face, preferably at night after you cleanse.

That said, it is nice to see that the masses appreciate a natural way to encourage healthier hair and scalp. 

How Does Rosemary Oil Helps With Hair Growth?

Rosemary is an herb that is popular both in beauty and culinary applications. It may help to reduce headaches, insomnia, and even depression. According to research, rosemary oil contains carnosic acid, which exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Due to the antioxidant activity, rosemary oil helps increase capillary perfusion (blood flow) to the scalp, which may encourage hair growth. In fact, the increase in capillary perfusion that results from rosemary oil application is similar to the action of minoxidil, a chemical treatment for hair growth.

What Do The Studies Say?

Although human studies are lacking, there are many existing animal studies about the effects of rosemary oil for hair growth. One study, for example, found that topical application of rosemary oil helped to improve hair growth on mice experiencing hair growth issues from testosterone treatment. An older study from 1989 found that a combination of essential oils improved hair growth when applied to the scalp on a daily basis. These oils included rosemary, thyme, lavender, and cedarwood, but the study didn’t isolate rosemary for its hair growth abilities. 

A more recent study revealed some promising effects of rosemary oil on hair growth. The study focused on using rosemary oil to counteract male pattern baldness. Researchers compared the effects of using rosemary oil with minoxidil, an effective hair growth treatment. Patients in the study either received rosemary oil or minoxidil 2%, using each treatment for six months. At the end of the study, both the rosemary oil and minoxidil treatments proved effective for regrowing hair. Participants who used rosemary oil were less likely to experience itchy scalp than those using the minoxidil treatment. 

Rosemary Hair Growth Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold-pressed castor oil
  • 1/2 cup fractionated coconut oil (or MCT oil)
  • 3/4 cup dried rosemary
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil

Instructions:

  • Pour the castor oil and fractionated coconut oil into a small stainless steel saucepan and then add the dried rosemary. Add the vitamin E oil and stir the mixture, ensuring that the rosemary is submerged in the oils.
  • Place the pot on the stove over medium-low heat and keep your thermometer handy. You want to infuse the benefits of rosemary into the oils without overheating them.
  • To keep the oils from scorching the rosemary, keep the rosemary oil below 230º F. As the oil begins to heat up, turn off the stove, give the oil a stir, and place a lid over the saucepan to retain the heat. 
  • Allow the oil to infuse away from the heat until it cools. Repeat this process once the oil cools and then continue repeating for about four to six hours. 
  • During the infusion process. The rosemary may turn bright golden yellow and become very fragrant. 
  • Once you let the oil mixture cool for the last time, transfer it to a mason jar and seal it tightly. Place it in a cool, dark place and let it infuse for two weeks. Give the jar a light shake every few days or so.
  • At the end of the infusion process, strain the oil using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth so that you are just left with oil. Make sure you get every last drop! Transfer the oil mixture to a dropper bottle for controlled application. You can use it directly on the scalp or incorporate this into other recipes. 

How To Use:

  • Apply the rosemary oil to your scalp and massage it using your fingertips. Work your way around your entire head, making sure to apply the rosemary oil to your hairline, temples, and any other areas of thinning hair. 
  • After the massage, turn your head upside down and continue massaging to divert blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. You should feel your head start to tingle after the massage. 
  • Leave the rosemary oil on for as long as you can allow and then wash your hair as normal.

Cocoa Butter

High in fatty acids, cocoa butter has a creamy texture that the skin can easily absorb. It melts at body temperature and can be a great option if the baby has dry skin. If the baby has oily skin, cocoa butter may not be a great option, as it can be too heavy and oily for their skin type. Cocoa butter contains a lot of antioxidants, which work to fight free radicals that can cause early signs of aging. These antioxidants also help protect the skin and keep it as healthy as possible. Cocoa butter also contains cocoa mass polyphenol, a substance that inhibits the production of immunoglobulin (IgE), which aggravates symptoms of eczema. 

Coconut Oil

Instructions:

  • Place the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a heat-safe glass measuring cup. Place the measuring cup in a small saucepan with an inch or two of water in it. 
  • Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat down to a low simmer. Stir the cocoa butter and coconut oil frequently until melted. 
  • Once fully melted, remove from heat and then stir in vitamin E oil and optional lavender essential oil. 
  • Place the measuring cup in the fridge and remove once the mixture has hardened. 
  • Remove from the fridge and whip the mixture with a hand mixer with one whisk attached. It will take about five minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Scoop into a glass jar, screw on the lid, and then store in a cool, dark place. Use when ready.

The great thing about homemade body butter is that you can select ingredients and formulations that cater to your skin’s needs. Not only can you experiment with texture, but you can also tweak the moisture content. Although some people enjoy having body butters that are specific to different times of the year, there is something special about having a body butter you can use no matter the season. 

This mango body butter contains four ingredients: mango butter, avocado oil, vitamin E oil, and arrowroot powder. The first three ingredients work nourish the skin, while arrowroot powder enables the body butter to have a more appealing, lightweight texture. Additionally, arrowroot powder helps you avoid a greasy finish to the skin after application. You just have to mix in the arrowroot powder after you melt, mix, and then chill the butters and oils that you’re using. It will truly give your body butter a luxurious texture. 

Mango Butter

Although scientific studies on mango butter are minimal, mango butter may be an under-the-radar anti-aging ingredient. Researchers have pointed out the many potential skin-nourishing benefits of mango butter, especially in regards to anti-aging, because of the compounds it contains. A high percentage of tocopherols (vitamin E) may help environmental stressors like visible light, UV rays, and pollution. Because it has a butter-like texture, mango butter is a powerful emollient for dry skin. Dermatologists agree that it forms a naturally occlusive barrier on the skin that not only protects it, but also hydrates it. Additionally, mango butter may support collagen health because of the large amount of vitamin C

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil contains lots of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E, in addition to a few other minerals like potassium. These nutrients work to moisturize the skin, specifically the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. The antioxidants in avocado oil may help alleviate dry or irritated skin. Although it is not an eczema or psoriasis remedy, people with those skin conditions may help relieve symptoms via topical application of avocado oil. Lastly, some studies found that consuming avocado oil may help the skin retain its elasticity. More research is necessary, but initial research is promising. 

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is known for two key features: antioxidant properties and moisturizing properties. As a common ingredient in many moisturizers, vitamin E oil may help prevent dry, flaking skin. A 2013 animal study found that, when given vitamin E supplements, mice were less likely to develop skin cancer, even when exposed to lots of UV light. Studies on humans, however, have not found any skin cancer prevention associated with vitamin E use. For those who experience dry or itchy skin from eczema, vitamin E oil may help provide relief. One study found that topical vitamin E use was able to reduce psoriasis symptoms. 

DIY Mango Body Butter

Ingredients:

  • 5.6 ounces mango butter
  • 2.2 ounces avocado oil
  • 0.1 ounce vitamin E oil
  • 2 teaspoons arrowroot powder

Instructions:

  • Melt the mango butter in a double boiler over medium-low heat. You can melt it in the microwave, but you have better control with the double boiler method. 
  • Once melted, remove the double boiler from the heat and stir in the avocado oil and vitamin E oil. Mix well, pour into a heat-safe bowl, and then place in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes. 
  • Remove the bowl from the fridge and then whip the mixture using a hand mixer. Whip for about five to seven minutes, or until light and fluffy. 
  • Transfer the body butter to your favorite container and then keep it in a cool place, using as needed.

Coconut Oil

Sweet Almond Oil

Stretch marks can be accompanied by dry skin or general irritation, and almond oil can help keep those symptoms at bay. Sweet almond oil works to enhance skin barrier function, penetrating layers of the epidermis, which may benefit stretch marks. 

Shea Butter

Shea butter works to hydrate the skin and improve skin cell growth. Skin that is more healthy and supple is much less likely to scar. Stretching that causes stretch marks, especially during pregnancy, can be quite extreme. Although keeping the skin moisturized will help reduce the appearance, it will not prevent stretch marks from occurring. That means that shea butter cannot prevent stretch marks, but it can help minimize the amount of damage. Areas of skin that already have stretch marks may benefit from shea butter application. Shea butter contains triglycerides and esters that help lock moisture in and improve skin barrier function.

Cocoa Butter

Recent research found that civilizations have used cocoa butter since 445 A.D. for its medicinal properties. Cocoa butter contains catechin, a naturally occurring antioxidant that exhibits antibacterial properties. Cocoa butter also penetrates the skin more easily than other butters. It’s the only butter that can reach down to the middle layer of the skin, the dermis. This layer possesses the connective tissue, which is responsible for collagen and elastin production. By enhancing the production of these two proteins, cocoa butter may encourage skin regeneration and help reduce or prevent stretch marks. 

DIY Belly Butter For Stretch Marks

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons each: sweet almond oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter
  • 1.5 tablespoons beeswax
  • 3 teaspoons vitamin E oil
  • 20 drops neroli essential oil (optional)
  • 15 drops helichrysum essential oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the sweet almond oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax to the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Stir as the ingredients melt. 
  • Once melted, stir the mixture and pour into a four-ounce container. Allow the mixture to harden completely. 
  • Remove the hardened mixture and place into a bowl, where you’ll mix in the vitamin E oil and essential oils. Mix well to combine and then put the mixture back into a glass container, preferably one with dark glass. 
  • Apply this butter at least once a day and allow it to soak in for 15 minutes before putting clothes over it, because it is quite oily. Store in a cool, dark place.

It’s time to embrace the C word: cellulite. Say it loud and say it proud because it isn’t something you should be embarrassed about. Cellulite is a normal part of life, so jiggle with it, wiggle with it, and own it. Do what you will with your cellulite, even if that means using the sugar scrub in this article to help reduce the appearance of it. What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a harmless skin condition characterized by lumpy, dimpled skin. It most commonly exists on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen, and tends to be more prevalent in women than men. A lot of people try, with variable success, to get rid of cellulite. Weight loss, exercise, massage, dry brushing, and anti-cellulite creams and scrubs can help improve the appearance of cellulite, but results vary from person to person.

If you want a little less cellulite, there are several things you can experiment with. Lymphatic drainage massage, for example, works to increase circulation and remove toxins. If the massage therapist does it with an anti-cellulite cream, it can leave your skin feeling perky and soft. Another common way to help improve the appearance of cellulite is through exfoliation. Not only does exfoliation lead to a smoother skin texture, but it also leaves the skin less dimply. Some of the standout ingredients that do that are detailed below. 

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and an effective anti-cellulite supplement because of the antioxidant activity. Working to aid the delivery of oxygen to the skin, vitamin E can help promote a brighter skin tone and tighter appearance. Vitamin E oil is easily absorbed by the skin and works to flush fat deposits that cause cellulite via massage. 

Coconut Oil

When you apply coconut oil to the skin, it may help minimize the appearance of cellulite, but this depends on the person. Scientists and researchers don’t fully understand how and why cellulite occurs, but it seems to relate to the connective tissue that attaches the skin to muscle underneath. Virgin coconut oil has been especially beneficial for its healing properties on the skin. It may help stimulate collagen and have a tightening effect on the skin. 

Sugar

As mentioned earlier, exfoliation may help battle cellulite, and sugar is a grainy, coarse exfoliator. Working to remove dead skin, exfoliating with sugar leaves your skin looking refreshed and healthier. Anecdotal reports state that regular use (about twice weekly) of sugar scrubs in the affected areas may reduce cellulite. This may not work, but exfoliating the area can help improve the overall appearance and texture, which is a plus. 

DIY Anti-Cellulite Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup virgin coconut oil
  • 200 grams sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil to a heat-safe glass measuring cup and microwave for about 30 seconds to soften the oil. 
  • Pour the oil into a mixing bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Mix well until all of the ingredients are thoroughly combined. 
  • Transfer this mixture to an airtight container, preferably a glass jar, and screw on the lid. Store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that can cause itchiness, dry skin, blisters, scaly patches, rashes, and skin infections. Itchy skin is the most common symptom of the condition, which affects more than 31 million Americans. If flare-ups reach a certain point, antihistamines, corticosteroids, or topical steroid creams are the usual treatment options that healthcare providers recommend. Some people don’t want to resort to these medications and prefer to experiment with natural solutions to manage the condition. Coconut Oil

Working to soften dry, brittle skin (a common symptom of eczema), coconut oil helps prevent skin breakups that invite microbes into cracks. As most of you know, coconut oil is a great moisturizer because the skin can easily absorb it. One randomized, double-blind study from 2014 found that virgin coconut oil had a greater effect than mineral oil in 117 patients with mild eczema symptoms. Compared to extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil was able to better moisturize dry skin and remove the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in 126 eczema patients. 

Shea Butter

Another wonderful moisturizing ingredient, shea butter is rich in beneficial fatty acids that rejuvenate the skin. In fact, the fatty acids in shea butter work to accelerate the renewal of skin cells, in addition to supporting circulation. Shea butter contains a few derivatives of cinnamic acid, which exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. The vitamin E in shea butter benefits the skin by promoting softness and providing relief from dryness. One research study found that 74% of patients with eczema reported a significant relief from symptoms after using a cream containing shea butter. Researchers believe that shea butter’s ability to prevent trans-epidermal water loss was a primary reason for this relief. 

Calendula Oil

If you have eczema, including calendula oil in your skin care routine is a great idea. It is rich in anti-inflammatory properties that work to reduce both itchiness and swelling in affected areas. Researchers note that calendula oil can help disinfect wounds, minor cuts, and mild skin irritations, primarily due to the inherent antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Calendula oil also works to stimulate the production of collagen, which can assist with the healing process. In fact, one study monitored eczema patients who used topical applications containing calendula. Many participants reported that it soothed irritation, itching, and helped improve the healing process. 

Castor Oil

Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which works to draw dirt, dead skin cells, and microbes from the skin. It also helps stimulate lymphatic flow and encourage the growth of healthy tissues. By promoting optimal circulation, castor oil works to remove cellular toxins, which in turn reduces inflammation in the body. According to researchers, castor oil is very effective at hydrating and moisturizing the skin. In fact, it may relieve pain and treat infection, making it an ideal ingredient for eczema patients. Lastly, the antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties in castor oil have been thoroughly documented.

Anti-Itch Whipped Body Butter

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons raw, unrefined shea butter
  • 5 tablespoons virgin, unrefined coconut oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon castor oil
  • 1 tablespoon calendula oil
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 7 drops tea tree oil (therapeutic grade)

Instructions:

  • In the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat, add the shea butter, coconut oil, and castor oil. Stir occasionally until everything is thoroughly melted. 
  • Remove from heat and pour the melted mixture into a heat-safe glass bowl and allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for an hour. You can place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill it for 20 minutes, or until it starts to solidify.
  • Using an electric hand mixer, whip the partially solidified mixture for a few minutes. Add the calendula oil, vitamin E oil, and lavender and tea tree essential oils and whip for another several minutes, or until the mixture is nice and fluffy. 
  • Spoon the body butter into an airtight glass jar and store in a cool, dark place. It will keep fresh for one to two months, or longer if you store it in the fridge. Just keep it away from direct sunlight.
