What does vitamin E do and are there vegan sources of this fat-soluble vitamin? Yes and yes. Vitamin E comes in several forms, but alpha-tocopherol is the only one used by the human body. The primary role of vitamin E is to act as an antioxidant, fighting free radicals that can damage cells. It also works to optimize immune function and prevent clots from forming in heart arteries.

What Is Vitamin E?

Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E, became known to the public in the 1980s, when scientists started to understand that free radical damage was a part of the early stages of atherosclerosis. Free radical damage may also contribute to cancer, vision loss, and many other chronic health conditions. Vitamin E works to protect cells from these damaging free radicals, while simultaneously reducing the body’s production of free radicals in certain situations. There is conflicting evidence, however, on whether or not high doses of vitamin E can actually prevent chronic diseases.

Recommended Amounts

According to research, the recommended daily intake (RDI) for vitamin E for males and females ages 14 years and older is 15 milligrams (mg) per day. If monitoring vitamin E intake in international units (iu), consume 22 iu per day, and that goes for pregnant women as well. Lactating women need a little more at 19 mg, or 28 iu per day. The following recommendations for vitamin E intake are for people under the age of 14:

 • 0-6 months: 4 mg per day
 • 7-12 months: 5 mg per day
 • 1-3 years: 6 mg per day
 • 4-8 years: 7 mg per day
 • 9-13 years: 11 mg per day

Vegan Sources Of Vitamin E

Vitamin E exists in a lot of plant-based foods, including oils, nuts and seeds (including nut and seed butters), fruits, and vegetables. The following foods are considered the top 10 vegan sources of vitamin E. We will list their serving sizes with the amount of vitamin E in mg for your knowledge.

 • Almonds: 7.4 mg of vitamin E per 1/4 cup
 • Sunflower seeds: 6.9 mg of vitamin E per 1/4 cup
 • Spinach: 4.6 mg of vitamin E per one cup of cooked spinach
 • Hazelnuts: 4.3 mg of vitamin E per 1/4 cup
 • Swiss chard: 4 mg of vitamin E per one cup of cooked chard
 • Turnip greens: 3.7 mg of vitamin E per one cup of cooked greens
 • Mustard greens: 3.3 mg of vitamin E per one cup of cooked greens
 • Kiwi: 2.5 mg of vitamin E per 1 medium fruit
 • Broccoli: 2.2 mg of vitamin E per one cup of cooked broccoli
 • Mango: 2 mg of vitamin E per one medium fruit

Signs of Vitamin E Deficiency

Vitamin E is found in many vegan and non-vegan foods, in addition to various supplements. That makes the vitamin E deficiency rate in the United States very low, even rare. That said, people with digestive disorders, or those who cannot properly absorb fat, can develop a vitamin E deficiency. If you cannot absorb fat, you may have cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, celiac disease, or other similar disease. The common signs of a vitamin E deficiency include:

 • Peripheral neuropathy (damage to the peripheral nerves, usually in the hands or feet, which can cause weakness or pain)
 • Decreased immune function
 • Retinopathy (damage to the retina, which can impair vision)
 • Ataxia (loss of control of body movements)

Conclusion

Vitamin E is an integral nutrient for preventing oxidative damage and maintaining overall health. Because there are many food sources and supplements, you should not have a problem eating the RDI of vitamin E per day, no matter what diet you follow. Fresh is always best, so include a variety of nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and other fruits and vegetables in your diet to meet your vitamin E needs.

Whether you follow TikTok beauty trends or get lured into buying commercial beauty products, skin care is an ever-evolving field. There are no breakthroughs, tips, and hacks about how to best care for the body’s largest organ. With so many options to choose from, how do you know which skin care products are right for you? That can be very difficult, considering that each product has a handful of ingredients, some of which may do more harm than good.

Because more people are aware of the negative effects of commercial beauty products, DIY skin care products are more popular than ever. Simple ingredients, many of which have been used for centuries, can help address common skin issues. In case you need more proof, the following five natural skin care ingredients have loads of research to back up their efficacy. Continue reading to learn more about them.

Green Tea For Inflammation And Aging

Green tea is replete with polyphenols, offering a shocking 30% polyphenol antioxidant count by weight. Researchers state that the most notable antioxidant is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory properties. According to several studies, topical application of polyphenols can help repair sun-damaged skin. Some research even indicated that this topical application may reverse the signs of aging, such as reducing the appearance of dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Oat Extracts For Sensitive Skin

Some beauty experts consider oats, or oat extracts, to be the gold standard for sensitive skin. Both colloidal oatmeal and oat oil are beloved by estheticians for their ability to soothe sensitive skin. For example, colloidal oatmeal has a high lipid and antioxidant content, which helps protect the skin barrier. Colloidal oatmeal has many active nutrients, including vitamin E, ferric acid, and avenanthramides, which exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Many dermatologists recommend colloidal oatmeal for the treatment of eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Coconut Oil For Dry Skin

Soothing dryness should not be your only reason for using coconut oil topically on the skin. Coconut oil contains natural fatty acids that help nourish and smooth out the skin. The reason coconut oil is particularly beneficial for dry skin is because it helps increase moisture levels in the skin, due to its occlusive properties. It also helps to improve skin barrier function, which is why people with eczema or psoriasis find coconut oil so soothing.

Aloe Vera For Dullness

You are probably most familiar with aloe vera for its ability to soothe sunburns and accelerate the healing from burns or mild scrapes. It has been a staple in natural skin care for centuries because of its medicinal properties. Researchers found that aloe vera contains more than 75 (and potentially up to 200) different active compounds, such as sugars, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and salicylic acids. Aloe vera is excellent for hydrating the skin because it is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to the skin.

Researchers note that aloe vera has proven to increase the water content of the stratum corneum, the skin’s outermost layer. But wait, there’s more! Aloe vera may help brighten the skin, due to its content of aloesin. One study found that it helped treat UV-induced and post-acne hyperpigmentation. Topical application of aloesin may directly inhibit hyper pigmented skin from producing more melanin, which can cause the formation of dark spots.

Jojoba Oil For Oil Control

The chemical structure of jojoba oil is very similar to human cells, making it a popular ingredient in skin care products. Jojoba oil may help reduce oiliness by modulating the skin’s production of sebum. Because of the iodine content, jojoba oil also works to balance bacterial overgrowth, which can lead to breakouts. Finally, jojoba oil is rich in skin-soothing ingredients, such as vitamin E, copper, B-complex vitamins, and zinc, which give the oil anti-inflammatory properties.

The post The Top 5 Health Benefits Of Hazelnuts appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

When you include hazelnuts as part of your healthy diet, they can provide a number of health benefits. Known as the filbert, the hazelnut is a type of nut that is primarily cultivated in Italy, Spain, Turkey, and the United States. They have a sweeter flavor profile and you can enjoy them raw, roasted, or ground. Similar to other nuts, they offer lots of healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. In this article, we aim to detail the top five benefits of hazelnuts.

Nutrition

Some of the standout nutrients in hazelnuts include vitamin E, fiber, protein, and healthy fats. According to available food data, one ounce of hazelnuts contains:

 • Calories: 176
 • Carbohydrates: 4.7 grams (g)
 • Protein: 4.2 g
 • Fiber: 2.7 g
 • Total fat: 17 g
 • Vitamin E: 21% of the recommended daily intake (RDI)
 • Copper: 24% of the RDI
 • Manganese: 87% of the RDI
 • Thiamin: 12% of the RDI
 • Magnesium: 12% of the RDI

Hazelnuts also provide smaller amounts of zinc, vitamin B6, potassium, folate, and phosphorus. They are also excellent sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, offering omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, including oleic acid. Hazelnuts do contain phytic acid, which may impair the absorption of certain minerals, such as iron and zinc, from the nuts.

Lowering Cholesterol

According to a 2013 study, a diet rich in hazelnuts decreased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. This is the bad type of cholesterol that can increase the risk of heart complications. The study authors concluded that the best way to reap these benefits was to enjoy hazelnuts daily without increasing overall caloric intake. A separate review of studies from 2016 indicated that hazelnuts could reduce bad cholesterol. Although hazelnuts are calorically dense, researchers didn’t note that they contributed to weight gain at all.

Rich In Antioxidants

Antioxidants work to counteract oxidative stress in the body by neutralizing free radicals. Oxidative stress can damage cell structure, which can increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, and early signs of aging. Phenolic compounds, which are abundant forms of antioxidants, are readily available in hazelnuts. An eight-week study found that regular hazelnut consumption decreased oxidative stress, compared to not eating hazelnuts. Most of the antioxidants in hazelnuts are concentrated in the skin, but they may decrease after the roasting process. That’s why it is better to consume whole, unsalted hazelnuts with the skin.

Lowering The Risk Of Cancer

Hazelnuts have the highest concentration of proanthocyanidins, which also exist in pistachios and pecans. These antioxidant compounds were able to treat certain types of cancers in some test-tube and animal studies. Researchers believe attribute this to reducing oxidative stress. Hazelnuts also provide a lot of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that has proven to protect against cell damage, which could potentially promote cancer development. Several test-tube studies found that hazelnut extract may be beneficial in the treatment of breast, liver, cervical, and colon cancers. Additionally, one animal study found that a product made from hazelnut skin extract revealed a lower risk of colon cancer after an eight-week period. More studies are necessary, but preliminary research is promising.

Reducing Inflammation

A 2013 study found that a diet rich in hazelnuts reduced inflammation among participants. That said, researchers from another study noted that the changes in inflammatory markers were insignificant after eating hazelnuts. One study looked at how inflammatory markers reacted post hazelnut consumption. Participants in the study had high cholesterol and researchers observed significant reductions in inflammation after participants consumed a diet rich in hazelnuts for four weeks. During this period, hazelnuts accounted for 18-20% of their total caloric intake. Most studies conclude that eating hazelnuts alone is not enough to significantly reduce inflammatory markers. A calorie-controlled diet, exercise, proper hydration, and sufficient sleep all contribute to a reduction of inflammatory markers.

May Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Researchers note that nuts may help regulate blood sugar levels. Although there isn’t a substantial amount of research, some studies indicate that hazelnuts may help reduce blood sugar. One study examined the effects of hazelnuts on fasting blood sugar levels in 48 participants living with type 2 diabetes. Half of the group consumed hazelnuts as a snack, while the others were part of a control group. After eight weeks, the hazelnut group did not experience notable reductions in blood sugar. That said, another 12-week study found that a combination of 30 grams of mixed nuts showed significant reduction in fasting insulin levels in people with metabolic syndrome.

From jojoba and argan to coconut and beyond, many oils reportedly improve the skin’s appearance. Which ones are the most effective for improving the overall health and integrity of your skin, though? Whether you want to moisturize, protect, cleanse, or reduce fine lines, face oils may be exactly what your skin has been missing.

First off, you must understand that each oil is unique and offers its own set of benefits. Additionally, one oil that works for one person may not work for another person. The unique biology of the skin may agree with oils in different ways. What is for certain is that many oils have been researched and reviewed by scientists and beauty experts. In this article, we’ll take a look at five different face oils and how they contribute to flawless-looking skin

Grapeseed Oil

Rich in high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E, grapeseed oil works to increase the skin’s moisture levels. It also makes the skin more supple and less prone to cracking, which reduces the risk of wrinkles or fine lines. According to beauty experts, grapeseed oil is one of the best natural oils for facial skin, primarily because it contains proanthocyanidin. This antioxidant helps to even out skin tone and enhances the skin’s ability to bounce back. One study found that oral consumption of grapeseed oil reduced the appearance of melasma, which is characterized by blue-gray or brown patches on the face.

Olive Oil

It shouldn’t be a surprise that olive oil, although a staple in many kitchens, made the list of beneficial face oils. Olive oil results from a process of pressing olive fruits to extract their oil. It contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, in addition to antioxidants and squalane. Research suggests that olive oil helps to fight free radical damage, slow skin aging, and hydrate dry skin. One animal study involving mice found that olive oil application to their skin yielded lower rates of tumors caused by ultraviolet rays. If you have sensitive skin, however, steer clear of olive oil because it may cause allergies

Marula Oil

If you are chasing the fountain of youth and yearn for beautifully radiant skin, marula oil offers impressive anti-aging benefits. Made from the marula trees in South Africa, marula oil can help smooth fine lines and may reduce the appearance of wrinkles. If you have dry facial skin, apply this oil to your face to leave it feeling soft and refreshed. Because marula oil has a high oleic acid content, it helps restore moisture in skin that is on the drier end of the moisture spectrum. The skin quickly absorbs this oil, so you can apply other products after without worrying about a greasy residue.

Rosehip Oil

Beauty experts consider rosehip oil as one of the top anti-aging oils on the market. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin and is a dry oil, meaning it is fast-absorbing so as not to leave your skin greasy. Instead, applying rosehip oil can help contribute to smoother, softer, and more supple skin. Research shows that rosehip oil encourages cell turnover, so it acts as a natural exfoliant. It is a rich source of vitamin E and essential acids, which work to keep your skin soft and healthy. Rosehip oil may also be effective for eliminating hyperpigmentation, which is usually difficult to get rid of.

Argan Oil

Harvested from the kernels of the argan tree in Morocco, argan oil is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamin E, making it an excellent face oil. It helps to protect the skin and absorbs quickly, so you can use it with other skin care products. One of the attracting factors to argan oil is that it is great for all skin types, from very dry to very oily. It may help get rid of acne because it helps reduce inflammation and stays out of your pores. Lastly, argan oil’s antioxidants may help repair the skin and fight the signs of aging.

When the weather is cold and the air is dry, it is very common to experience dry, itchy skin. This is especially true if you run the heater in your house during the winter. Staying warm is essential, but transitioning from the cold, dry air outside to the warm, dry air inside contributes to itching and dryness. That’s why moisturizers are necessary, but using the right one will change how you feel in your own skin.

If you regularly moisturize, you probably know that you use more during the winter. Besides the outdoor and indoor air, the heavier clothing you wear in the winter can cause significant chafing. Maybe you reapply your moisturizer, only to feel dry again in an hour. Fortunately, there is a remedy in the form of the DIY body oil recipe in this article. Using a body oil in place of your typical lotion or moisturizer will help soothe dry or itchy skin and make your skin feel silky smooth. How does this DIY body oil do that? The ingredients nourish your skin and help it retain water, and you can learn more about how they do that below.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil differs from extra virgin coconut oil in that it goes through a process that makes it remain liquid at room temperature. Extra virgin coconut oil is usually solid at room temperature, unless it is in a warm environment. Fractionated coconut oil is made by separating different types of fats in regular coconut oil, and two medium-chain fatty acids remain. It is one of the most versatile carrier oils available and absorbs quickly into the skin. It helps to seal moisture into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil exhibits numerous health benefits for the hair and skin. It is especially beneficial for people with dry skin, itchy skin, eczema, or psoriasis. Derived from vitamin E, vitamin E oil can be applied directly to the skin or added to lotions, creams, or gels. It exhibits antioxidant properties that may fight inflammation and other properties that enhance moisture. Vitamin E oil is a common additive to moisturizers because it helps prevent dry, flaky skin. Some studies suggest that vitamin E oil provides temporary relief from itching caused by dry skin. Additionally, one study suggests that topical application of vitamin E oil may improve psoriasis symptoms.

Lavender Essential Oil

Dry skin can overproduce sebum, the skin’s natural oil, to compensate for the dryness. That can lead to clogged pores and blemishes. Lavender essential oil exhibits antibacterial properties that can help kill acne-causing bacteria that may inhabit your pores. It also works to moisturize the skin and is non-comedogenic for pores. It is also an anti-inflammatory superstar, working to soothe irritated or reddened skin from the sun.

Tea Tree Oil

Dry skin is no laughing matter and it can increase the risk of cracking, flaking, or even bleeding if you scratch too much. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe dry skin. The best way to enhance moisture with tea tree oil is to mix it with a carrier oil and then apply it to the skin. Tea tree oil is very potent, so don’t apply it directly to the skin, as that may cause further irritation.

DIY Body Oil With Lavender

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup fractionated coconut oil
 • 40 drops tea tree oil
 • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
 • 15 drops lavender essential oil
 • 8-ounce jar with lid

Instructions:

 • Pour the fractionated coconut oil into a mixing cup and then add the tea tree oil and vitamin E oil.
 • Finally, drop in the lavender essential oil and stir well to combine the oils. Pour this mixture into a clean eight-ounce jar and screw on the lid.
 • If you have a little left over, treat your skin well right away!
 • This is a wonderful body oil to use right after you shower. Make sure to shake up the oil before you massage it gently into the skin while your skin is still moist.

You cannot turn back the clock and fully regenerate the beautifully smooth skin from your youth. There are, however, actions you can take to protect, nourish, and keep the skin looking young and healthy as you age. One of the easiest ways to control the appearance of your skin is through your diet, specifically anti-aging superfoods

The word “superfood” gets thrown around a lot, but what exactly does it mean? A superfood provides more nutrients than the average healthy diet. Popular superfoods include kale, spirulina, sweet potatoes, turmeric, and blueberries, in addition to many more. The reason that superfoods matter is because they help to fight free radicals, which are molecules that have an unpaired electron. Without antioxidants from superfoods to combat free radicals, your risk of cell damage, inflammation, aging, and cancer increases.

Free radicals are the bad guys and antioxidants are the good guys you need to save the day. When choosing foods that will nourish the skin and fight the aging process, select the ones that offer high antioxidant activity. Not only do these foods help to keep the skin younger, but they also have a positive effect on the rest of the body. Let’s take a closer look at these anti-aging superfoods and how they benefit your skin.

Olive Oil

Great for your heart, olive oil is a staple food in the Mediterranean Diet. Not only is olive oil a great source of monounsaturated fat, but it also provides a high amount of procyanidins and polyphenols, which work to fight skin damage. Olive oil also contains vitamin E, which helps combat environmental or sun damage to the skin. The fatty acids and antioxidants in olive oil contain anti-inflammatory substances that may also fight against cardiovascular disease, cancer, and more.

Oatmeal

No, we are not referring to the little packages of oatmeal that contain processed ingredients and added sugars. Oats are considered to be a superfood because they contain beta-glucans, which work to fight early signs of aging, such as wrinkles. Oats also contain vitamin E, phytic acid, phenolic compounds, avenanthramides, and other antioxidant substances. Although you may not be able to pronounce those words, they do incredible work for your skin, heart, and cells. Opt for steel cut oats or rolled oats to get the most nutritional bang for your buck.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are the secret anti-aging superfoods hiding in plain sight. Their rich beta-carotene content is vital for optimal skin health. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which helps the skin heal faster and triggers the production of healthy cells, ultimately reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Tomatoes also contain other nutrients that support overall health, and they are lycopene, lutein, choline, alpha-lipoic acid, and folate.

Leafy Greens

Some leafy greens have more super powers than others. Spinach, kale, collard greens, and card are excellent sources of vitamins A, C, and E, in addition to magnesium, fiber, iron, and protein. One cup of kale contains more calcium than a cup of milk, and also offers vitamins A & C, both of which aid skin elasticity. Other leafy greens of note include watercress, arugula, leaf lettuce, and Swiss chard.

Green Tea

Green tea offers many health benefits because it exhibits potent antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. It contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant that fights wrinkles by reducing damaging free radicals on the skin’s outermost layer. You can drink green tea or take a dietary supplement. You can even use green tea topically, as it is a common ingredient in many anti-aging skin care products.

Pomegranates

Not only are pomegranates great for the immune system, but they also benefit the skin in several ways. Pomegranates contain ellagic acid, an antioxidant that works to slow down the aging process and helps prevent skin cancer. Researchers attribute the strong antioxidant properties to the tannins (punicalagins), which are polyphenolic compounds. These water-soluble compounds are bioavailable and the body can easily absorb them.

Nuts

Different nuts offer different nutritional profiles, but researchers agree that walnuts and almonds are great choices. Walnuts offer omega-3 fatty acids, which can help people with dry skin conditions, like eczema and psoriasis. They are also rich in other nutrients that optimize digestion, support weight control, and may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Almonds contain vitamin E, phytosterols, and monounsaturated oleic acid, all of which work together to protect the skin from free radicals. Don’t go nuts on nuts, though, as a handful of either walnuts or almonds will be a sufficient and filling snack.

If you are into the world of DIY beauty, then you are most likely familiar with rosemary oil for hair growth. Maybe this natural hair growth oil caught your attention and you want to give it a try but don’t know how to make it or what to do. It is true that rosemary oil benefits the hair, but how exactly does it contribute to regrowth and thicker hair? This article aims to highlight how to make and use rosemary oil.

Despite what the online videos say, rosemary oil for hair growth is not just another TikTok beauty trend. It is far from a new discovery, as rosemary oil is a popular hair growth remedy in many cultures around the world. That said, it is nice to see that the masses appreciate a natural way to encourage healthier hair and scalp.

How Does Rosemary Oil Helps With Hair Growth?

Rosemary is an herb that is popular both in beauty and culinary applications. It may help to reduce headaches, insomnia, and even depression. According to research, rosemary oil contains carnosic acid, which exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Due to the antioxidant activity, rosemary oil helps increase capillary perfusion (blood flow) to the scalp, which may encourage hair growth. In fact, the increase in capillary perfusion that results from rosemary oil application is similar to the action of minoxidil, a chemical treatment for hair growth.

What Do The Studies Say?

Although human studies are lacking, there are many existing animal studies about the effects of rosemary oil for hair growth. One study, for example, found that topical application of rosemary oil helped to improve hair growth on mice experiencing hair growth issues from testosterone treatment. An older study from 1989 found that a combination of essential oils improved hair growth when applied to the scalp on a daily basis. These oils included rosemary, thyme, lavender, and cedarwood, but the study didn’t isolate rosemary for its hair growth abilities.

A more recent study revealed some promising effects of rosemary oil on hair growth. The study focused on using rosemary oil to counteract male pattern baldness. Researchers compared the effects of using rosemary oil with minoxidil, an effective hair growth treatment. Patients in the study either received rosemary oil or minoxidil 2%, using each treatment for six months. At the end of the study, both the rosemary oil and minoxidil treatments proved effective for regrowing hair. Participants who used rosemary oil were less likely to experience itchy scalp than those using the minoxidil treatment.

Rosemary Hair Growth Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup cold-pressed castor oil
 • 1/2 cup fractionated coconut oil (or MCT oil)
 • 3/4 cup dried rosemary
 • 1 tsp vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • Pour the castor oil and fractionated coconut oil into a small stainless steel saucepan and then add the dried rosemary. Add the vitamin E oil and stir the mixture, ensuring that the rosemary is submerged in the oils.
 • Place the pot on the stove over medium-low heat and keep your thermometer handy. You want to infuse the benefits of rosemary into the oils without overheating them.
 • To keep the oils from scorching the rosemary, keep the rosemary oil below 230º F. As the oil begins to heat up, turn off the stove, give the oil a stir, and place a lid over the saucepan to retain the heat.
 • Allow the oil to infuse away from the heat until it cools. Repeat this process once the oil cools and then continue repeating for about four to six hours.
 • During the infusion process. The rosemary may turn bright golden yellow and become very fragrant.
 • Once you let the oil mixture cool for the last time, transfer it to a mason jar and seal it tightly. Place it in a cool, dark place and let it infuse for two weeks. Give the jar a light shake every few days or so.
 • At the end of the infusion process, strain the oil using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth so that you are just left with oil. Make sure you get every last drop! Transfer the oil mixture to a dropper bottle for controlled application. You can use it directly on the scalp or incorporate this into other recipes.

How To Use:

 • Apply the rosemary oil to your scalp and massage it using your fingertips. Work your way around your entire head, making sure to apply the rosemary oil to your hairline, temples, and any other areas of thinning hair.
 • After the massage, turn your head upside down and continue massaging to divert blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. You should feel your head start to tingle after the massage.
 • Leave the rosemary oil on for as long as you can allow and then wash your hair as normal.

If you, like millions across the nation, enjoy the warming fall aromas, then you are going to love this recipe. And if you love pumpkin spice everything, this is the nourishing lip scrub you never knew you needed in your life. It only contains natural ingredients that cater to the skin on your lips. Your lips will look more luxurious than ever!

What Is A Lip Scrub?

Just like a body scrub or facial scrub, a lip scrub contains particles that help slough away dead, dry, or flaky pieces on the lips. Lip scrubs naturally, not chemically, remove these dead cells, allowing your lips to better absorb moisturizing agents and protectants. If you ever apply lip balm and have to reapply 15 minutes later, your lips probably require exfoliation. DIY lip scrub recipes like the one in this article, are very simple to make and even easier to use.

What’s In A Lip Scrub?

More often than not, a lip scrub will contain an exfoliant, such as sugar, a carrier oil, vitamin E oil, and some flavoring or scented ingredients. This pumpkin spice lip scrub in this article contains both brown and granulated sugar, sweet almond oil, vitamin E oil, and pumpkin pie spice. If you know that your lips are sensitive, consider just using brown sugar because granulated sugar can be a little intense for those with sensitive skin.

How To Use A Lip Scrub

Wet your lips just as you would wet your face prior to cleansing. By wetting your lips, you help prevent abrasive friction. Apply the lip scrub directly to your damp lips and use small, circular motions with your fingertips to massage it in. Do this for about 30 seconds before rinsing off with lukewarm water. This process is highly beneficial if you want to soften and smooth your lips before applying lip balm or lipstick, or even if your lips are flaky from cold weather. If your lips are sunburned or have open cuts, please do not use a lip scrub because it may cause unwanted irritation.

What Do You Do After Using A Lip Scrub?

After you scrub your lips, you have to then apply a repairing lip balm. Some people like to use pure petroleum jelly because it seals in moisture, which soothes your cleansed lips. Providing the lips with moisturizing ingredients post scrub can rehydrate the skin’s outer layer, sealing in as much moisture as possible. If you don’t like petroleum jelly, which is completely understandable, you can use this DIY lip balm

If you are a parent, or someone with sensitive skin, you probably look at the ingredient lists of skin care products with a critical eye. Fragrances are just as suspect as natural flavors. The last thing you want to do is apply a skin care product that leaves your skin itchy, dry, or irritated. Because finding safe, natural products can be a challenge, making your own skin care products is often the best choice. Such is the case for this all-natural homemade baby lotion.

DIY skin care products are having a moment because more and more people prefer natural ingredients to harmful chemicals. Some people think that making skin care products is too much of a commitment. There are some recipes that take a lot of time to make, but a recipe like this homemade baby lotion is quite simple. Although it isn’t so easy that a baby could make it, the lotion is perfectly safe for sensitive skin and babies. Continue reading to learn how the ingredients are perfectly safe for sensitive skin.

A Quick Note: make sure to do a patch test of each of the ingredients on your baby prior to using it regularly. If there is no reaction within 24 hours, the ingredient is generally safe for use.

Cocoa Butter

High in fatty acids, cocoa butter has a creamy texture that the skin can easily absorb. It melts at body temperature and can be a great option if the baby has dry skin. If the baby has oily skin, cocoa butter may not be a great option, as it can be too heavy and oily for their skin type. Cocoa butter contains a lot of antioxidants, which work to fight free radicals that can cause early signs of aging. These antioxidants also help protect the skin and keep it as healthy as possible. Cocoa butter also contains cocoa mass polyphenol, a substance that inhibits the production of immunoglobulin (IgE), which aggravates symptoms of eczema.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and is a completely safe ingredient to help protect your baby’s delicate skin. Skin experts concur that coconut oil is an easily accessible remedy for a range of skin and hair issues in both babies and people with sensitive skin. Coconut oil contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help moisturize the skin and provide a protective barrier, keeping the baby’s skin safe from dryness. Plus, coconut oil contains vitamin E, which plays an important role in skin repair and the prevention of premature wrinkles.

Vitamin E Oil

As a natural antioxidant, vitamin E oil works to neutralize free radicals. Your little one is probably not too concerned with early signs of aging, though. The main reason that this homemade baby lotion contains vitamin E oil is because it helps form a barrier between the skin and the environment. That helps to seal in moisture and protect the skin from things like sun damage.

Homemade Baby Lotion

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 cup organic cocoa butter
 • 1/4 cup organic coconut oil
 • 1/4 tsp vitamin E oil
 • 3 drops therapeutic grade lavender essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

 • Place the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a heat-safe glass measuring cup. Place the measuring cup in a small saucepan with an inch or two of water in it.
 • Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat down to a low simmer. Stir the cocoa butter and coconut oil frequently until melted.
 • Once fully melted, remove from heat and then stir in vitamin E oil and optional lavender essential oil.
 • Place the measuring cup in the fridge and remove once the mixture has hardened.
 • Remove from the fridge and whip the mixture with a hand mixer with one whisk attached. It will take about five minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
 • Scoop into a glass jar, screw on the lid, and then store in a cool, dark place. Use when ready.

The great thing about homemade body butter is that you can select ingredients and formulations that cater to your skin’s needs. Not only can you experiment with texture, but you can also tweak the moisture content. Although some people enjoy having body butters that are specific to different times of the year, there is something special about having a body butter you can use no matter the season.

This mango body butter contains four ingredients: mango butter, avocado oil, vitamin E oil, and arrowroot powder. The first three ingredients work nourish the skin, while arrowroot powder enables the body butter to have a more appealing, lightweight texture. Additionally, arrowroot powder helps you avoid a greasy finish to the skin after application. You just have to mix in the arrowroot powder after you melt, mix, and then chill the butters and oils that you’re using. It will truly give your body butter a luxurious texture.

Mango Butter

Although scientific studies on mango butter are minimal, mango butter may be an under-the-radar anti-aging ingredient. Researchers have pointed out the many potential skin-nourishing benefits of mango butter, especially in regards to anti-aging, because of the compounds it contains. A high percentage of tocopherols (vitamin E) may help environmental stressors like visible light, UV rays, and pollution. Because it has a butter-like texture, mango butter is a powerful emollient for dry skin. Dermatologists agree that it forms a naturally occlusive barrier on the skin that not only protects it, but also hydrates it. Additionally, mango butter may support collagen health because of the large amount of vitamin C

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil contains lots of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E, in addition to a few other minerals like potassium. These nutrients work to moisturize the skin, specifically the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. The antioxidants in avocado oil may help alleviate dry or irritated skin. Although it is not an eczema or psoriasis remedy, people with those skin conditions may help relieve symptoms via topical application of avocado oil. Lastly, some studies found that consuming avocado oil may help the skin retain its elasticity. More research is necessary, but initial research is promising.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is known for two key features: antioxidant properties and moisturizing properties. As a common ingredient in many moisturizers, vitamin E oil may help prevent dry, flaking skin. A 2013 animal study found that, when given vitamin E supplements, mice were less likely to develop skin cancer, even when exposed to lots of UV light. Studies on humans, however, have not found any skin cancer prevention associated with vitamin E use. For those who experience dry or itchy skin from eczema, vitamin E oil may help provide relief. One study found that topical vitamin E use was able to reduce psoriasis symptoms.

DIY Mango Body Butter

Ingredients:

 • 5.6 ounces mango butter
 • 2.2 ounces avocado oil
 • 0.1 ounce vitamin E oil
 • 2 teaspoons arrowroot powder

 • Melt the mango butter in a double boiler over medium-low heat. You can melt it in the microwave, but you have better control with the double boiler method.
 • Once melted, remove the double boiler from the heat and stir in the avocado oil and vitamin E oil. Mix well, pour into a heat-safe bowl, and then place in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes.
 • Remove the bowl from the fridge and then whip the mixture using a hand mixer. Whip for about five to seven minutes, or until light and fluffy.
