There’s nothing wrong with brewing a fresh cup of coffee to get your day started. What if you ground some coffee beans and didn’t pour hot water over them, though? What if you incorporated them into a sugar scrub that helps exfoliate and nurture your skin? The beauty industry recognizes coffee as a beneficial skin care ingredient, and we’ll cover why that is in this article.

Body exfoliation is an essential part of skin care, and a coffee scrub is one of the best products to benefit your skin. Depending on the ingredients you pair coffee grounds with, a coffee scrub will have different benefits. For example, pairing it with jojoba or coconut oils can help infuse the skin with more moisture. Not only does coffee help exfoliate the skin, but it also provides the following benefits.

Reduces Cellulite Appearance

Although coffee doesn’t make cellulite vanish magically, it may diminish the appearance of cellulite on the skin. The caffeine in coffee works to dilate blood vessels under the skin and stimulate blood flow. That works to improve the skin’s appearance, making it look tighter by shrinking those small dimples.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Coffee exhibits a high amount of polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds. According to research, the specific anti-inflammatory effects of coffee are attributed to chlorogenic acid, a compound in coffee. Including coffee in your body scrub, or other skin care products may help reduce redness, breakouts, or flare-ups on acne-prone skin.

Works To Moisturize Skin

Some studies suggest that coffee bean oil contains essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid. These fatty acids are building blocks for ceramides, which enhance your skin’s barrier (the outermost layer). Not only does that help lock in moisture, but it also helps keep out irritants. Research suggests that coffee’s polyphenols work to reduce skin dryness and improve microcirculatory function.

Anti-Aging Properties

Due to the presence of antioxidants and polyphenols, coffee works to fight free radicals to help enhance the overall appearance of skin. One study found that the caffeine in coffee helped reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and wrinkles in middle-aged women. Additional research suggests that coffee exhibits antioxidant activity, thus improving fine lines, wrinkles, and overall appearance of skin.

Protects Against Sun Damage

Can you replace your sunscreen with coffee grounds? Absolutely not, but studies show that the caffeine in coffee helps protect against ultraviolet (UV) damage. Some research notes that coffee may protect against sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer caused by sun damage. Researchers state that caffeine acts similarly to sunscreen and preliminary test-tube studies show it may help kill skin cancer cells.

Bean There, Done That

Was that overly corny? Regardless of your stance on puns, we want to urge you not to throw away your coffee grounds after you finish brewing a hot cup of coffee. Save the coffee grounds and add them to your beauty regimen. As with so many other foods, coffee provides a host of skin care benefits. In fact, it helps reduce the appearance of dark circles under your eyes, which is why coffee extract is a common ingredient in under-eye creams.

Homemade Vanilla Coffee Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 20 drops vanilla essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon coffee grounds

Instructions:

  • Add the sugar, coconut oil, and vanilla essential oil to a medium mixing bowl and stir well.
  • Add in the coffee grounds (fresh or used is fine) and stir well to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into some four-ounce mason jars and store in a cool-dry place. This scrub will last about two to three weeks, so consider giving some of it to a close friend or family member if you don’t think you’ll use it all in time.

Scalp scrubs are exactly what they sound like: scrubs for your scalp. Just like the body, your scalp needs exfoliation to help remove dirt, excess oil, dead skin cells, and built-up product. If you don’t regularly cleanse the scalp, all of that build-up can gather at the root of the hair and prevent hair growth.

Why Use A Scalp Scrub

The glands on the scalp have a similar function to those on the face: they produce oil (sebum) that maintains healthy skin and hair. Your regular shampoo routine may not be enough to cleanse the scalp if glands produce too much oil. That’s where a physical exfoliant enters the equation. If you think about it, scrubs help reduce potential irritation and dandruff that stems from excess oil production. In fact, a 2018 study found that a healthy scalp translates to healthy hair growth

There are many ways to exfoliate the scalp, but you ideally want to use ingredients that are gentle and rich with nutrients. Coffee grounds work to naturally exfoliate the scalp to encourage healthy hair growth. Read on to learn more about how coffee can benefit your scalp and hair

Exfoliation

A 2013 study suggests that the substances in coffee work to promote healthier skin by way of removing dead skin cells. Caffeic acid, a powerful antioxidant, in coffee may boost collagen levels and reduce premature aging cells. Scrubbing the scalp with coffee grounds also works to improve blood circulation. According to studies, improving circulation to the scalp encourages the growth of new hair. In order for new hair to grow, though, you have to first remove build-up that can clog pores.

Helps Restore Hair & Scalp pH Levels

The hair and scalp naturally have a lower pH value, meaning they are more acidic. Studies confirm that hair fibers have a pH of 3.67, while the scalp has a pH of 5.5. Anything below a pH of 7.0 is considered acidic, while anything above that is basic, or alkaline. If you use hair products that have a higher pH value than the hair and scalp, you may experience frizziness, dryness, or dullness. Because coffee is naturally acidic, applying coffee grounds to your hair and scalp may help rebalance the pH levels of the hair and scalp.

May Restore Hair Growth And Appearance

As mentioned earlier, coffee may help stimulate hair follicles, which may help accelerate hair growth. Caffeine helps to increase blood circulation to the scalp, allowing more nutrients to reach the scalp efficiently. Ultimately, this results in quicker and healthier hair growth. If your hair looks dull or dry, coffee can also help liven it up. The flavonoids in coffee, in addition to promoting healthier hair growth, may leave the hair looking smooth, soft, and shiny.

Coffee Scalp Scrub

Ingredients:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Olive oil
  • Peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Brew a cup of coffee with coffee grounds, reserving the coffee grounds to use for the scalp scrub. You can drink the coffee if you want.
  • Take one tablespoon of the used coffee grounds and add them to a small bowl or jar. Pour in one tablespoon of olive oil and 2 drops of peppermint essential oil and mix well.
  • While you are in the shower, take a small amount of the scrub and gently massage it into your scalp for 30 seconds. Rinse it off and wash away with your favorite shampoo.
  • If you feel that the coffee grounds are stuck in your hair after your shower, just brush your hair once it dries and the coffee grounds will come off easily.

Cellulite can affect everyone, but it disproportionately affects women. According to health surveys, a whopping 90% of women and a mere 10% of men, mostly in industrial nations, experience cellulite. The reason that more women develop cellulite is because estrogens starts to decrease as they enter menopause. Estrogen has an impact on blood vessels and as it declines, you lose receptors in blood vessels and thighs. The decreased circulation means that these areas receive less oxygen and nutrition, explaining the signature dimpled skin look of cellulite.

What Is Cellulite?

You know when you have cellulite because your skin looks like the moon’s surface. It most commonly occurs in the thigh region and forms when fatty tissues deep in the skin push up against connective tissues. Cellulite tends to develop on the thighs because they have more fatty tissues than other areas of the body. Other factors that increase the chances of developing cellulite include tissue inflammation, loss of collagen, poor lymphatic drainage, age, poor circulation, and thinning epidermis. It also seems that diet, hormones, lifestyle, and genetics factor into whether or not you’ll develop cellulite.

Below, there are several natural remedies that may help get rid of cellulite. Experts agree that these natural remedies aid with balancing the connective tissue and fat in the body. Quick fixes can seem like attractive solutions to the problem, but things like liposuction are not effective treatments for cellulite or saggy or loose skin. Consider experimenting with the following remedies to help address the problem.

Eat More Collagen

The connective tissue, including layers of the skin, consists of collagen. In fact, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and the skin needs it for optimal elasticity. Keeping your skin strong helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite and maintain a more youthful complexion. One of the best ways to get more collagen in your diet is to consume organic bone broth, which contains amino acids called glycine and proline. Both of these amino acids make up collagen, antioxidants, and other trace minerals. A 2015 study found that people who took 2.5 grams of bioactive collagen peptides (BCP) experienced a significant decrease in the degree of cellulite. Researchers monitored participants over a six-month period and found that BCP improved the appearance of skin in women suffering from minor cellulite.

Myofascial Massage

A common theory for cellulite is that it forms in superficial fascia, which is the layer of connective tissues below the skin. It contains fat cells and tends to be fibrous, and experts say that inactivity, improper exercise, and injuries in this facia contribute to the rippled look of cellulite. As superficial fascia becomes thicker and more fibrous, it can adhere to underlying structures that affect the skin’s appearance. Various massage therapists can perform myofascial massage or myofascial release, but you don’t have to see a specialist for this. You can use a foam roller or a handheld percussive massager on the affected areas to smooth out the connective layer of tissues and balance the fascia

Dry Brushing

There may not be any scientific evidence that supports this home remedy, but there is a lot of anecdotal support. Dry brushing works to stimulate blood and lymphatic flow throughout the body. It helps to open the pores on the skin, which is something you should do on a daily basis. When it comes to dry brushing, the most important thing to remember is to always brush towards the heart, making long gentle sweeps. The bristles of the brush should be natural, somewhat stiff, and the handle should be long so you can reach various areas of the body. Learn more about dry brushing by clicking here

Use Coffee Scrubs

Coffee scrubs have become very popular in the DIY skin care world. They work to exfoliate the skin, which helps to stimulate blood and lymphatic flow to the areas of focus. Additionally, caffeine from the coffee has a tightening effect on the skin, helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Similarly, people use coffee under eye creams to tighten the skin and reduce puffiness. It’s best to use a coffee scrub on a weekly basis to stimulate collagen production and circulation. You are here for the sole purpose of learning how to get rid of cellulite without spending the big bucks to medically remove it. We don’t blame you. In fact, we are here to provide you with an affordable DIY scrub that is aromatic, exfoliating, and an excellent option for getting rid of unwanted bumps and ripples. Before we can give you the recipe, we have to hit you with some good news and bad news.

The Bad News

It’s always better to start with the bad and finish on a more positive note. Cellulite is caused by subcutaneous fat that bulges into the connective-tissue layer of the skin (the dermal layer). It can also be a result of poor blood flow, reducing collagen production and inhibiting proper lymphatic drainage. The bad news is that coffee grounds cannot make cellulite disappear forever. The fibrous bands of cellulite need to be severed in order for it to completely go away.

The Good News

The act of scrubbing coffee grounds on your skin works to reduce the appearance of cellulite. You have to continue this process on a weekly basis to increase circulation, which helps to decrease the lumpy appearance. Many dermatologists agree that coffee grounds possess excellent antioxidants that stimulate collage production. If you want to expose your thighs for a week (about as long as the effects of scrubbing last), massage a coffee scrub into your skin.

Many reports claim that roughly 80-90 percent of all women are affected by cellulite. It’s quite common and genetics, gender, diet, and level of activity all play a role in cellulite development. Many home remedies exist for getting rid of cellulite, the most common of which include dry-brushing (increasing lymphatic drainage), a balanced diet and exercise, and massaging coffee scrubs on the affected areas. Find out how to make and use the coffee scrub below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coffee grounds
  • ½ cup organic virgin coconut oil
  • 2/3 cup coarse sugar (turbinado sugar is a great option)
  • 4-8 drops cinnamon essential oil (use less if your skin is sensitive)
  • 8 drops vanilla essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a large bowl and mix well to combine. Transfer the mixture to a glass, airtight container.
  • Store the scrub in the refrigerator for up to one year.

How To Use

  • After rinsing off your body in the shower, massage the coffee scrub onto cellulite areas, for example, the thighs and buttocks. Make sure to apply firm pressure, but don’t rub too vigorously because you don’t want to break skin.
  • Rinse the scrub off and pat dry once you step out of the shower.
  • Finish your routine with a high-quality moisturizer. Click here for an excellent DIY recipe.

How It Works

  • Coffee grounds help to exfoliate the skin, which dilates blood vessels and helps to tighten the skin.
  • Cinnamon oil also works to dilate blood vessels. This process helps to plump up the skin and decrease the appearance of cellulite.
  • Sugar helps to exfoliate the skin, while coconut oil provides moisturizing properties to avoid abrasions or rough skin.

Most people don’t know this, but the skin is the largest organ in the body. That means that it absorbs airborne toxins or chemicals from beauty products, which make their way inside the body. Some people buy cleansers or other beauty products to get glowing, beautiful skin, but are they doing more harm than good?

When you have healthy skin, you feel more confident and sexier. Your skin, much like your overall health, shouldn’t be neglected. Giving your skin natural ingredients that work to soothe it and promote a youthful appearance is better than having it temporarily look good, while slowly contaminating it with chemicals. That’s why we recommend using an all-natural coffee sugar scrub.

Coffee is more than a drink that gives you a caffeine boost in the morning. Those grounds can do wonders for your skin, for example, helping to reduce inflammation or get rid of cellulite. Coffee grounds work to exfoliate the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells. This results in a smoother, cleaner, more hydrated face, but you can exfoliate other areas of the body too.

This coffee scrub includes cocoa butter, which is a great natural moisturizer. If you don’t want to use cocoa butter, you can also use shea butter, but cocoa butter helps the scrub hold together. You can make this for yourself, or make it in bulk and gift it to your friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 ounces virgin coconut oil
  • 2 ounces avocado oil (or sweet almond oil)
  • 25 ounces cocoa butter
  • 1 tablespoon coffee grounds
  • seeds from 1 vanilla bean (optional)

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 275º Fahrenheit. If you don’t want to use an oven, you can use a saucepan on your stove. Place the coconut oil and cocoa butter in an ovenproof loaf pan and place in the oven, or use the saucepan over low-medium flame on the stove. The melting process only takes a couple minutes.
  • Once those two are melted, remove from oven or heat. Fill a large bowl with ice and rest the saucepan/loaf pan with the coconut oil mixture in the ice. Add the avocado oil and mix to combine.
  • While the oil mixture is still in liquid form, slowly mix in the sugar. Stir in the coffee grounds and add the vanilla seeds if you are using them. Mix until you get a thick scrub.
  • Place the mixture in a glass jar and seal. Use once daily to improve skin health.
