A bath is tranquil experience that is beneficial for the mind and body. Whether you need to decompress from the chaos of life or relieve muscle soreness, a bath can help you achieve those desires. There’s so much more a bath can be, though. Why not take your bath to the next level? Learn how you can help promote natural detoxification by soaking in a bath with a few simple ingredients

Why Should You Have A Detox Bath?

There are many benefits to soaking in a detox bath. Many people are of the mind that you don’t need them unless you have toxins in the body. Well, most people have toxins in their bodies, but that’s not why you should have a detox bath. Detox baths work to promote muscle relaxation by relieving pain and tension. They can also help you unwind, which can lead to better quality sleep. Additionally, detox baths can improve circulation and enhance the overall appearance of the skin.

What are the active ingredients in this detox bath recipe? It may surprise you to learn that you only need three ingredients: baking soda, Epsom salt, and lavender essential oil. The aroma of lavender essential oil is very calming and helps to relax sore muscles. Baking soda and Epsom salt are the real stars of this detox bath, though. You can read more about them below.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt looks like table salt, but it’s a completely different compound. Table salt is sodium chloride and Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Medical reports state that the magnesium and sulfate in Epsom salt work to naturally draw out toxins from the body. This allows for home detoxification that is both easy and affordable. Additionally, the body can easily absorb the magnesium from Epsom salt. Since a high percentage of people tend to have lower levels of magnesium, this is great news. A 2004 study found that soaking in an Epsom salt bath worked to increase magnesium levels, soften the skin, reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tension, and reduce stress

Baking Soda

Most people don’t think to light some fragrant candles by a bath that contains baking soda. Believe it or not, there are myriad reasons to add baking soda to your bath. If you feel sluggish, baking soda is the perfect bath time ingredient to help promote detoxification. Upon absorption, the body uses it to help boost immunity and eliminate excess toxins that have built up in the system. Baking soda also works to naturally soothe the skin, which is beneficial for people with eczema or other itchy skin conditions. Lastly, combining baking soda with Epsom salt in a bath is a great way to soothe sore muscles. Many experts recommend this duo because they work to accelerate recovery.

DIY Detox Bath

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the Epsom salt and baking soda to a glass bowl and mix gently.
  • Drop the essential oil in the same bowl and mix to incorporate.
  • Divide the mixture in half and store in two separate glass jars. Store in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use.

How To Use:

  • After you draw a warm bath, add one jar of the mixture and stir with you hand to help it dissolve.
  • After a few minutes, soak in the bath and relax. It’s beneficial to soak in this bath for at least 20 minutes.

The face and hands often receive the most attention when it comes to skin care, but the feet are just as deserving. A good foot soak at the end of the day is not only necessary, but relaxing as well. It can help invigorate the skin on your feet, reduce muscle cramps or achy joints, and promote healthy detoxification, if you use the right ingredients.

The foot detox bath in this article helps promote healthier feet. Whether your feet are calloused, odorous, achy, sore, or cracked, this detox bath can help out those puppies. Sit back in a chair and let the relaxation and detoxification begin. Your feet will feel renewed once they emerge from this foot bath, and we’ll explain why by detailing the featured ingredients below.

Bentonite Clay

People have been using bentonite clay to promote the removal of impurities from the skin for thousands of years. Some of these impurities include environmental pollutants, oils, and bacteria that live on the skin. Some people ingest bentonite clay to remove toxins from the digestive system, while others prefer using it topically. Bentonite clay contains iron, calcium, and magnesium, and it works to adsorb oils and dirt from the skin. It does so by clinging to molecules or ions on the skin because it has an electrical charge when mixed with fluid. When you wash the clay off the body, it takes the toxins or impurities with it.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Some people dislike apple cider vinegar because it has a potent aroma, but try to get past the scent to experience the health benefits. It can be a natural remedy to myriad health problems, and it has powerful pH-balancing and detoxifying properties. Can’t stand the taste of it? That’s okay, because you can soak your feet in it to help remove germs, promote oxygenation, and get rid of fungal infections. Several studies found that apple cider vinegar is effective at hydrating dry feet and killing fungi and microbes that commonly cause feet to have bad odor.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is wonderful if you experience any tension or soreness. It contains magnesium sulfate, which has been used to treat pain and other ailments for hundreds of years. Soaking feet in an Epsom salt bath can ease soreness, but it may also help to remove toxins and heavy metals from the body. The theory is that the Epsom salt helps draw out these toxins through the feet, but evidence on this is not concrete. One of the other benefits is that Epsom salt has anti-fungal properties, which may help kill fungal infections on the feet, or make the skin less hospitable for fungal infections.

DIY Bentonite Clay Foot Detox

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 6 quarts hot water
  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  • Pour the hot water in a large basin or foot tub and dissolve the Epsom salt in it.
  • In a glass bowl (not metal), mix the bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar into a thick paste. Make sure to use a plastic, wooden, or ceramic mixing utensil. Any metal that comes in contact with the bentonite clay can ruin the electrical charge it has.
  • Rub this bentonite clay mixture all over your feet and let it dry completely. If you feel your feet pulsating, this is normal.
  • Place your feet in the hot water and Epsom salt bath and let them soak in there for 15 minutes. The clay will dissolve so that you can easily rinse your feet after. Pat to dry.

Throughout history, humans have believed in the healing properties of water. The Ancient Greeks placed importance on elegant bathhouses, the Ancient Egyptians bathed in the Nile for religious purposes, and Hindus bathed in the Ganges to be forgiven for transgressions and to help attain salvation. Nowadays, people can bathe in a hot soothing bath with essential oils to relieve headaches, or soak in a frigid ice bath to reduce inflammation. Not everyone takes advantage of how healing baths can be, though.

Taking a bath is a human tradition, but most people resort to showers for convenience and time restrictions. You don’t have to reserve baths for when you get sick, because you can always add healing ingredients to a bath to improve skin health, reduce stress, or decrease muscle aches and pain. The best part about these ingredients is that they are readily available, so much so that you may already have them in your home! You’ll find our favorite ingredients, along with their health benefits, to add to your baths below. Use them whenever you need a little extra self-care.

Raw Honey

There are historical records of early civilizations applying honey to the skin for its therapeutic properties. The antimicrobial properties are beneficial for dermatological applications, due to the H2 O2 release of components like methylglyoxal in manuka honey. The antioxidants in honey can help neutralize free radicals and toxins that can cause skin sagging or DNA damage. Add ½ cup of raw honey to warm bathwater and stir until dissolved.

Seaweed

Spas charge a pretty penny for seaweed wraps, but there’s no need to empty your wallet when you can make a DIY seaweed bath at home. Seaweed contains minerals that are essential for the proper function of human skin cells, thus explaining why seaweed wraps help the skin absorb the nutrients. Since the transference is primarily through osmosis, a seaweed bath is also beneficial, especially for those with psoriasis or eczema. Add several sheets of wrack kelp to your bath and soak for 20 minutes.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Praised for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, eucalyptus essential oil can be a healing addition to your bath, especially if you are suffering from congestion or cough. Several studies have shown that eucalyptus contains 1,8-Cineole, a powerful antimicrobial agent that can help to kill certain viruses. Add 10-20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to a warm bath to ease cold symptoms.

Green Tea

Next time you brew some green tea, brew about two extra cups for your bath. That’s right, people, green tea isn’t solely reserved for matcha lattes and weight loss. The antioxidants in green tea can enter your pores in the bath, helping your skin absorb the properties that contribute to a youthful glow. Studies have shown that the polyphenols in green tea can also protect the skin against early aging and wrinkles. Stir in two cups of green tea to your warm bathwater for best results.

Bentonite Clay

If you are looking to make a powerful detox bath, bentonite clay is the ingredient you need. It has been praised for its ability to help improve skin ailments like dermatitis, working to hydrate skin and boost collagen synthesis. Some cultures have even used bentonite clay as a natural sunscreen. To make a bentonite clay bath, stir ½ cup of bentonite clay into water in a bowl to yield a paste. Do not use a metal utensil or bowl for mixing the clay. Add this paste to the bath water and soak for 20 minutes.

Coconut Oil

Rich in medium-chain fatty acids, cold-pressed coconut oil helps to moisturize and soothe the skin. The antimicrobial and antibacterial properties benefit those who have acne-prone skin or fungal infections. Working to strengthen the protective barrier of the skin, coconut oil helps to make your skin less prone to inflammation and premature aging. Adding ½ cup of cold-pressed coconut oil to your bath, stirring until it melts.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil has a cooling effect on the body, which can help relax tense muscles. Often times, the scent of peppermint oil can alleviate headache pain or itchiness, and the anti-inflammatory properties may improve lung capacity, helping you breathe more deeply during your bath. For the best results, add 10-20 drops of peppermint essential oil to your bath with 6 teaspoons of melted cold-pressed coconut oil.

For those of you who have recently entered into the DIY beauty game, we applaud your decision to be free of chemical beauty products. With this step in a healthier skin care direction comes the need for some essential ingredients. The last thing you want is to have to seek out an ingredient when you are ready to make a recipe.

A lot of health food stores carry many ingredients that you will find in this article; some can also be ordered online. The difficulty of the DIY beauty product you decide to make will determine how easy or difficult it is to find the ingredients. Some may only require coconut oil, an essential oil, and a spice or two, while other recipes may call for a long list of ingredients. Take note of the following essentials for your DIY beauty needs.

Beeswax

Not everyone has a local beekeeper to talk to about the location of the finest beeswax in the land. If you do have that info, call us. It is best to get organic beeswax that comes in small pellets, as opposed to a giant block, because it is easier to melt and measure the pellets.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are absolutely necessary, if not the most important ingredients in DIY beauty products. Always opt for high-quality, therapeutic-grade essential oils because you are putting them on your body. Many essential oils help to relieve stress, promote better sleep, reduce inflammation, and reduce acne scarring. Rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, and lavender essential oils are great ones to start with.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil is the best variety to buy because it is free of bleach, deodorizers, and it is unrefined. It usually tops the list in many DIY beauty recipes. From soaps to salves, and creams to conditioners, virgin coconut oil helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin, and can even help to reduce cellulite.

Epsom Salt

Keep Epsom salt in your DIY beauty arsenal for cleansing detox baths! Because Epsom salt can help you naturally exfoliate, it helps to deep clean your pores, working to clear your face of oils and bacteria. The antimicrobial content of sulfate helps Epsom salt naturally fight off acne bacteria.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

While we endorse having this for culinary uses, olive oil easily finds it’s way into many DIY beauty products. It has beneficial properties for healthier hair and it is a great natural moisturizer. All olive oils are not created equal, so make sure to buy organic extra virgin olive oil.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay has many uses. You can add it to a bath to help extract toxins from the body, or incorporate it into a facial mask. Bentonite clay is beneficial for those who have clogged pores, oily skin, or acne, but it can also be used to calm dermatitis or other skin infections.

Containers

You’ll need mason jars of all sizes for your DIY beauty products. Not only are they extremely affordable, but they are also available everywhere. You’ll need them for salves, scrubs, or lotions, whereas metal tins may be more useful for balms or deodorants. You can also purchase dropper bottles for face serums or hair treatments.

Self-care and relaxation are key components that make up a healthy lifestyle. You could almost argue that taking time to properly relax is just as important as eating a healthy diet. That is why we are all about relaxing in these detox bath recipes we found. Not only do they help you relax, but they also supply the body with tons of beneficial nutrients.

What Are Detox Baths?

Detox baths can contain different ingredients. The ingredients you include in the detox bath depend on what your ultimate goal is. One of the most common things to add to a detox bath is Epsom salt, which isn’t actually salt at all. It is technically magnesium sulfate, a mixture of magnesium and the sulfate compound. Magnesium is an essential mineral that works to combat cortisol, the stress hormone, and it is also responsible for reducing inflammation and relaxing sore muscles.

The following baths can be beneficial, depending on the results you’d like to experience.

Calming Detox Bath

Need to take a load off and shut out the world for an hour? This bath is exactly what you need. Your skin will feel amazing and the scents will help to put you in calmer, more relaxed mood.

  • 5 cups dead sea salts
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • 1/8 cup bentonite clay
  • 7 drop lavender essential oil
  • 7 drops frankincense essential oil

Instructions:

  • Store this in an airtight jar.
  • Add 1 cup of the mixture to a warm bath and soak in it for about 20 minutes. Rinse after soaking and pat yourself dry. Make sure to drink water after the bath.

Detox Bath For Back Pain

  • Transfer the mixture to a large glass jar that is airtight.
  • Use 1 cup of the mixture when you want to take a bath. Stir it in warm water until dissolved and soak in it for about 20 minutes.

Green Tea Eucalyptus Detox Bath

This bath contains ingredients that help balance your pH levels, soften your skin, and deliver antioxidants to your body via your skin. This bath is also great if you have tired or sore muscles.

The flu is going around and nobody wants to be stuck at home with the chills, congested, nauseous, or weak. The best way to avoid getting the flu is to stay ahead of the game. We mean that it is important to take preventative measures, for example, eating more fruits and vegetables with immune boosting properties and natural vitamin C.

Not everybody can avoid the flu, however, and that is when natural healing can come to the rescue. The body can actually recover more quickly when you use ingredients that it can easily process. Rather than loading up on chemically rich flu medications, try overcoming the flu with the following natural remedies.

Garlic

Containing antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, garlic is an immune-boosting superstar. It is very easy to add garlic to your diet, and you should do just that to help reduce cold or flu symptoms. Garlic’s properties are most potent when you consume it raw. Rather than chewing on a raw garlic clove, blend it with other fruits and vegetables to make a healing smoothie.

Up Your Vitamin C Intake

An adult can safely consume up to 2,000 mg of vitamin C every day. You may not need this much, but it is beneficial to eat fruits and vegetables that contain tons of vitamin C. Interestingly enough, there are produce items that contain more vitamin C than oranges. Speaking of oranges, don’t consume orange juice (unless it is freshly squeezed) when you are sick. The excess sugar does not accelerate the healing process. You should consume kale, grapefruit, kiwis, cauliflower, chili peppers, broccoli, guavas, and peas.

Oregano Oil

Oregano oil contains cleansing elements, which can speed up the healing process. Note that you shouldn’t consume more than four drops of oregano oil at once. If you don’t want to ingest the oil, you can apply it to the bottoms of your feet with a little coconut oil. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the bottoms of the feet are directly linked to the major organs. Massaging it into the feet may help these organs absorb the healing properties, while detoxing waste in the process.

Ginger Root

Whether you have a sore throat or need some help soothing your stomach, ginger should be a go-to remedy. Ginger has been used to help get rid of nausea, which commonly comes with the flu, for years. Try to get fresh ginger root as opposed to using ginger powder.

Detox Bath Recipe

If you have the flu, you may find this bath to help you overcome your symptoms. It works to draw out toxins and supply your body with a variety of nutrients in the process.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups Epsom salt
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger
  • ½ cup sea salt

Instructions:

  • Fill you bathtub with water as hot as you can comfortably handle. Pour all of the ingredients in the water and stir to dissolve.
  • Soak in this bath for about 40 minutes. Make sure to drink water during your bath because you will be sweating a lot.
  • Once you get out of the bath, dry off, get dressed, and wrap yourself in a warm blanket. It’s important to keep sweating out the flu.
  • Don’t do this more than once a day.

Foot detoxing helps balance your energy. When combining reflexology with the science of ionics and osmosis, foot detoxing can be an incredibly powerful health management strategy with important therapeutic benefits.

Benefits

People who use foot detoxing, report feeling relief from:

The process

An ionic foot detox bath takes place in a foot tub capable of negatively charging ions, which attract toxins. Positive ions help assist the body’s natural detoxification process and help the body to detox more efficiently.

The ionic foot machine is a modern day energy device that safely and effectively helps balance the body’s natural energy system. More specifically, it also works in essence by introducing a high level of negative ions into water of a foot bath/soak, the feet, utilizing principles of reflexology and the science of ionization and osmosis, create a positive cellular environment and enable the body’s natural detoxification abilities and processes to function at their maximum.

Negative ions attract positive ions. For this reason, it’s recommended that you add a clear quartz crystal to the tub (water) to enhance the cleansing effect during an ionic foot detox bath session.

During the foot detox, you may see or witness in the water these things:

  • When the water turns yellow, it’s a sign that the liver is toxic and most of the cleansing of the ionic foot detox bath session was focused on the liver.
  • When the water turns yellow-greenish, it’s a sign of detoxification from the kidneys, bladder, urinary tract, and female uterus/male prostate area.
  • When the water turns orange (light or dark orange), it’s a sign that the ionic foot detox bath session was primarily focused on the joints and the joints were detoxified.
  • When the water turns red, it’s a sign that the ionic foot detox bath session was primarily focused on cleansing the joints and reproductive chamber of both males and females. Pretty much means the same thing as the color orange.
  • When the color of the water turns brown, it denotes detoxifying from the liver, detoxing the liver of tobacco and/or cellular debris.
  • When the water turns black, it’s a sign that the ionic foot detox bath session primarily concentrated on pulling toxins from the body – the tissues, from the entire body but especially from the liver.
  • When the water turns green (or dark green), it’s a sign that the ionic foot detox bath session primarily concentrated on pulling toxins from the gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas, and also the liver. Yes, the liver is pretty much great positively affected by an ionic foot detox bath and the results of this powerful liver cleansing do manifest in various colors (changes to the color of the water). Remember, the liver is the body’s largest internal organ of elimination.
  • When you see thick patches of white foam floating on top of the water, this denotes detoxing from the lymphatic system.
  • When you see thick, white-colored cheese-like particles floating in the water, this denotes yeast (candida).
  • When you see thick, yellow patches floating on the water, this denotes mucus.
  • Black flecks in the water of an ionic foot detoxing session denote heavy metals.
  • Red flecks in the water of an ionic foot detoxing session denote blood clot material.
  • When you see bubbles forming (especially when the water is dark orange, dark red, and/or black), it’s a sign of extreme acidity. Your body is too acidic. When you see these bubbles forming in dark colored water alongside thick white and/or yellow patches, you’re really toxic and need several more sessions along with a good cleanse (e.g. Dherbs.com Full Body Detox, 10-Day Electric Greens Cleanse, etc.) complimented by some other forms of cleansing such as colonics and/or enemas, castor oil pack liver cleansing, and fasting.

When you’re dealing with energy, as the ionic foot detox bath does deal with, the cleansing effect is not just physical but also emotional and etheric. You are positively addressing toxicity on all levels of your existence. The water of an ionic foot detox session smells like rust not only because of the effect of metal array being in water, but because metals (toxins) are being released from the body. Our tissues are saturated with metals that get into our bodies from the things we eat and drink. So post-ionic foot detox bath water smells horrible (and also looks horrible), depending on the person and their level of toxicity. People who were vegan or raw foodist, especially raw foodist, always had the least polluted post-ionic foot detox bath water.

After the Foot Detox

To really enhance foot detoxing, after your session, at night, at bedtime, wear foot detox patches or pads on your feet. Foot detox patches or pads keep the foot detoxing process going. These products work (just as ionic foot detoxing works).

After you bathe your feet in an ionic detox session or wash your feet after removing foot detox patches or pads from overnight wear or usage, massage/rub your feet with a good feet-rubbing oil product such as Dherbs.com Healing and Rejuvenating Foot Oil, or, simply make your own foot rubbing oil using a good botanical oil (e.g. jojoba, olive oil, coconut oil) and add in a few drops of:

  • Essential oil of Peppermint is cooling and refreshing. Makes the feet feel renewed and rejuvenated – a great feeling!
  • Essential oil of Lavender is very calming. Rubbed on the feet at night before bedtime will help to enhance better quality sleep.
  • Essential oil of Spikenard is very therapeutic and will work wonders for the feet and toenails.
