If there is one thing that is consistent with the beginning of the year, it is the desire to either get healthy, get fit, or lose weight. Losing weight, or detoxing, is a common New Year’s resolution because of all the holiday eating that happens before the beginning of the year. Most holiday meals are heavy, carb-centric, and full of unhealthy fats, sugar and sodium. People have the power to eat unhealthy throughout the year, though. We want to help you dig yourself out of the hole of heavy meals and into a healthier, lighter self.

Detoxing does not mean that you have to abstain from food. On the contrary, you want to eat food, but it has to be food that provides essential nutrients to the body. Additionally, you want to eliminate unwanted sugars, processed foods, and excess carbohydrates. Finally, flood the body with water and herbal teas to properly hydrate and flush toxins from your system. Below, you’ll find some helpful tips to detox after a lot of heavy eating.

Drink Healthy Waters

This is not an endorsement to purchase bottled sugary, electrolyte beverages from the store. If the color is reminiscent of a nuclear fluid (think lime green, blue, or bright yellow), you can count that out. Good old fashioned filtered water is life, but you can enhance this water to encourage detoxification. Add fresh cucumber slices, lime wedges, orange wheels, berries, pineapple cubes, and herbs to your water. Infusing these types of ingredients into your water can impart their nutrients into the liquid. Not only do they enhance the nutritional properties of your water, but they also make your water taste that much better!

Load Up On Negative Calorie Foods

There is no such thing as a food that has zero calories. There are, however, foods that are so light in calories that the body burns just as much or more calories digesting them. The idea behind detoxing is that you want to give the body a lot of nutrients and water. Foods that are very low in calories and high in water include cucumbers, asparagus, apples, watermelon, blueberries, lettuce, cantaloupe, broccoli, and cauliflower. The combination of the nutrients and water content will help the body flush out all the excess food you consumed.

Don’t Be Afraid To Nap

It should be noted that you can nap too much. If you decide to nap, especially in the afternoon, try to keep naps to 20-30 minutes in length. Sleeping too much can negatively affect your sleep cycle, or make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Sleep is necessary for the body, as it is the body’s way of rejuvenating itself. Just don’t rest too much, or you will feel groggy and out of sorts. Lack of sleep can negatively affect digestion, metabolism, and energy levels, which impairs your ability to naturally detox.

Dry Brush Your Body

Dry brushing is a way of stimulating lymphatic flow. The lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins, but you need to activate it in order to facilitate this process. In order to promote lymphatic detoxification, you just have to move, but you can also use a technique called dry brushing. You can give yourself a lymphatic massage with your hands, or you can use a brush with firm bristles. The easiest way to start is to brush is to start with the feet and legs, always brushing up towards the heart. Once you get to your thighs, start at your palms and work inwards toward the heart. You can then do the abdomen and armpits, followed by the back and face. Click here to learn more about dry brushing.

Get To Sweating

The gyms are more crowded than ever in the beginning of the year. People are filled with ambition and ready to drop some pounds! You don’t need a gym membership to get your sweat on, though. Not only does exercise encourage you to sweat, but it also boosts your mood. Sweating is one of the body’s way of getting rid of excess toxins. If you feel puffy after a lot of heavy eating, your body is most likely retaining water, especially if that food was heavy on the salt and sugar. A good sweat session can help you de-puff and get you out of your funk. After an aerobic workout, consider getting in the sauna to sweat even more.

The time has come to make some fluffy, smooth, skin-firming body cream! While it won’t turn your flab into fab, it may help you maintain tight skin during your weight loss journey. The ingredients in this body cream, which is more like a body butter, are 100% natural and work to nourish the skin.

One thing to know about this body cream is that it is slightly greasy, even though the skin can easily absorb the ingredients. The shea butter tends to leave a little shine, though, making your skin glisten in the sun. A little greasiness aside, you may want to accompany the use of this body cream with some dry brushing. If you haven’t started dry brushing, it’s a great way to boost circulation and even out skin tone. Click here to learn more about dry brushing and continue reading to learn how this body cream can help tighten your skin

Camellia Oil

Perhaps the unsung hero of skin care, camellia oil is naturally rich in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. From boosting hydration to reducing stretch marks, this oil does wonders for your skin. Camellia oil works to restore the skin’s elasticity, while simultaneously tightening and toning the skin. It may also help diminish visible fine lines and wrinkles to keep your skin looking youthful.

Mango Butter

In India, the mango is considered the “king of fruits” because it is the source of the emollient mango butter. The primary chemical constituents of mango butter are oleic acid, stearic, acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and vitamins A, C, and E. Together these nutrients work to maintain softness and suppleness, while also reducing the signs of premature aging. Mango butter’s emollience also boosts skin elasticity, which makes the skin look firmer and smoother.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is the fat extracted from the nut of the shea tree. It has been used in cosmetic applications for centuries because of the high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids. Shea butter contains vitamin A, which works to nourish the skin and help fight early signs of aging. Additionally, shea butter encourages collagen production, keeping your skin nice and firm. It also contains vitamin F (a mixture of two essential fatty acids), which keeps the skin hydrated and soft; thus, helping your skin maintain its elasticity.

Hemp Seed Oil

This light green oil comes from the cold-pressing of hemp seeds. Fear not, because hemp seeds don’t contain the active ingredient that causes psychotropic reactions in the brain. It is a standardized oil that almost everyone can use. In addition to softening the skin, hemp seed oil forms a protective barrier on the skin, preventing it from losing moisture. It does this because hemp seed oil is a humectant, which draws environmental moisture to the skin. Hemp seed oil may also firm and tighten the skin, contributing to a more beautiful complexion.

DIY Skin Firming Body Cream

Ingredients:

 • 50 grams mango butter
 • 40 grams shea butter
 • 10 grams camellia oil
 • 5 grams hemp seed oil
 • 5 drops each: patchouli, geranium, and bergamot essential oil
 • 4 drops vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • Prepare a water bath by adding about one inch of water to a wide pan. Bring the water to a low simmer over medium-low heat.
 • Add the mango and shea butters to a heat-safe glass measuring cup and place the cup into the pan with the water. Remove the glass cup from the pan once the butters are thoroughly melted. Give the melted butters a quick whisk to combine.
 • Allow the mixture to cool down completely before adding it to a bowl along with the camellia and hemp seed oils. Use an electric mixer to whip the ingredients into a fluffy cream that resembles frosting. You’re not done yet, though.
 • Whip for a few more minutes and then place it in the fridge for two minutes. Remove from the fridge and whip for another few minutes before placing it in the fridge again.
 • Remove from the fridge once more, add the essential oils, and whip again. Transfer the mixture to your container/jar of choice and use when ready.

The post 5 Ways To Detox After Thanksgiving appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It’s the day after Thanksgiving and you wake up not feeling like yourself. There’s a fullness that you can’t shake, which came from the stuffing, alcohol, turkey, pies, potatoes, green beans, and more. It’s almost as though the abundance of food reinforces the gratitude people express on Thanksgiving.

People love a good excuse to overindulge, but they don’t like to feel bloated and guilty. You don’t have to venture on a 10-day juice cleanse just because you gorged on some holiday classics, though. There is good news for people who don’t necessarily want to only consume liquid for days. As it turns out, there are strategies to get your body back on track and feeling like you did before you filled it to the brim.

Use A Body Brush

Using a body brush may seem like an odd recovery tool after a big meal, but it actually encourages the detoxification process. The lymphatic system needs assistance when it comes to proper circulation and drainage. Dry-brushing, as people call it, is performed without any moisture. In addition to promoting detoxification, dry-brushing also helps to enhance immune function and reduce the appearance of cellulite. If you want to learn more about dry-brushing and how to do it, click here

Skip The Packaging

In order for the body to get back on track, it’s best to avoid anything that comes in a package for a few days post feast. Packaged foods are very difficult for the body to digest and can increase the risk of high blood pressure, due to the high sodium content. It’s best to avoid toxins like preservatives and sodium when trying to detox. Head straight for fresh fruits and vegetables! These foods contain both macro and micronutrients that help to flush out the body. A green smoothie might be an excellent way to start the day after Thanksgiving.

Drink Some Lemon Water

It’s a classic detox tip for a reason, people! Drinking water helps to flush waste from the body, so drink a big glass before you reach for any food the morning after Thanksgiving. To enhance the effects of water, add some fresh lemon juice. Lemon promotes alkalinity within the body and also kickstarts the digestive process, in addition to flushing the liver. In a tall glass of warm water (not boiling), squeeze half a lemon and stir. You can drink this concoction as it is, or add a dash of cayenne pepper as well to spark that metabolism

Focus On Healthy Fats

Don’t go out and eat a bunch of baked goods and fried foods; rather, focus your efforts on healthy fats. Great sources of healthy fats include chia seeds, nuts, avocados, flaxseeds, olive oil, dark chocolate, eggs, and wild caught fish. These foods contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which help to keep you full and provide you with energy. Consuming more omega-3 fatty acids can improve digestion, heart health, brain function, and decrease the risk of inflammation. Reducing inflammation also helps you get the body back on track after Thanksgiving, especially since many holiday dishes contain inflammatory ingredients.

Take A Break From Leftovers

It’s hard to reduce bloating and promote detoxification if you keep shoveling leftovers into your mouth. The whole point is to break from leftovers and focus on lighter foods. A fruit and vegetable smoothie for breakfast or bowl of homemade oatmeal are both great breakfast options. You could take some leftover turkey and incorporate it into a salad for lunch, which should be the biggest meal of your day. Finally, keep it light and continue detoxing at dinner. Consider brown rice with stir-fried vegetables and kimchi. The beneficial enzymes will help the body digest food in a more efficient way, helping you feel less bloated.

Cellulite can affect everyone, but it disproportionately affects women. According to health surveys, a whopping 90% of women and a mere 10% of men, mostly in industrial nations, experience cellulite. The reason that more women develop cellulite is because estrogens starts to decrease as they enter menopause. Estrogen has an impact on blood vessels and as it declines, you lose receptors in blood vessels and thighs. The decreased circulation means that these areas receive less oxygen and nutrition, explaining the signature dimpled skin look of cellulite.

What Is Cellulite?

You know when you have cellulite because your skin looks like the moon’s surface. It most commonly occurs in the thigh region and forms when fatty tissues deep in the skin push up against connective tissues. Cellulite tends to develop on the thighs because they have more fatty tissues than other areas of the body. Other factors that increase the chances of developing cellulite include tissue inflammation, loss of collagen, poor lymphatic drainage, age, poor circulation, and thinning epidermis. It also seems that diet, hormones, lifestyle, and genetics factor into whether or not you’ll develop cellulite.

Below, there are several natural remedies that may help get rid of cellulite. Experts agree that these natural remedies aid with balancing the connective tissue and fat in the body. Quick fixes can seem like attractive solutions to the problem, but things like liposuction are not effective treatments for cellulite or saggy or loose skin. Consider experimenting with the following remedies to help address the problem.

Eat More Collagen

The connective tissue, including layers of the skin, consists of collagen. In fact, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and the skin needs it for optimal elasticity. Keeping your skin strong helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite and maintain a more youthful complexion. One of the best ways to get more collagen in your diet is to consume organic bone broth, which contains amino acids called glycine and proline. Both of these amino acids make up collagen, antioxidants, and other trace minerals. A 2015 study found that people who took 2.5 grams of bioactive collagen peptides (BCP) experienced a significant decrease in the degree of cellulite. Researchers monitored participants over a six-month period and found that BCP improved the appearance of skin in women suffering from minor cellulite.

Myofascial Massage

A common theory for cellulite is that it forms in superficial fascia, which is the layer of connective tissues below the skin. It contains fat cells and tends to be fibrous, and experts say that inactivity, improper exercise, and injuries in this facia contribute to the rippled look of cellulite. As superficial fascia becomes thicker and more fibrous, it can adhere to underlying structures that affect the skin’s appearance. Various massage therapists can perform myofascial massage or myofascial release, but you don’t have to see a specialist for this. You can use a foam roller or a handheld percussive massager on the affected areas to smooth out the connective layer of tissues and balance the fascia

Dry Brushing

There may not be any scientific evidence that supports this home remedy, but there is a lot of anecdotal support. Dry brushing works to stimulate blood and lymphatic flow throughout the body. It helps to open the pores on the skin, which is something you should do on a daily basis. When it comes to dry brushing, the most important thing to remember is to always brush towards the heart, making long gentle sweeps. The bristles of the brush should be natural, somewhat stiff, and the handle should be long so you can reach various areas of the body. Learn more about dry brushing by clicking here

Use Coffee Scrubs

Coffee scrubs have become very popular in the DIY skin care world. They work to exfoliate the skin, which helps to stimulate blood and lymphatic flow to the areas of focus. Additionally, caffeine from the coffee has a tightening effect on the skin, helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Similarly, people use coffee under eye creams to tighten the skin and reduce puffiness. It’s best to use a coffee scrub on a weekly basis to stimulate collagen production and circulation. The lymphatic system may be one of the most important bodily systems, despite the fact that it rarely gets discussed. The spotlight typically shines on developing immune strength or improving digestive health, but the body can only do these things if the lymphatic system is functioning properly. Establishing healthy lymphatic flow is one of the best ways to ward off illness and disease.

What Is The Lymphatic System?

Even though you may not feel it, the lymphatic system is always there, working to dispose of toxins and waste. The circulatory system delivers nutrients to the organs and tissues in the body, and the lymphatic system is like the body’s highway for drainage, ultimately playing a large role in natural detoxification. The lymphatic system also has a hand in developing new T cells, which help protect the body from illness and disease. And the lymph nodes and lymphatic tissues throughout the body work to initiate immune responses to foreign invaders, antigens, and bacteria.

How Does The Lymphatic System Get Clogged?

If the lymphatic system didn’t get clogged, we wouldn’t need to write this article. The lymphatic system does not have a pump, unlike your blood, meaning that it relies on the contraction and relaxation of joints and muscles to maintain flow. This means that you are the pump, and being inactive or sedentary means your pump is weak and lymphatic fluid isn’t draining properly. The last thing you want is for your lymphatic system to become stagnant, because that means it is constantly working to dispose of toxins. The longer it takes to eliminate toxins, the greater risk you have of developing:

 • Chronic pain
 • Fatty deposits
 • Arthritis
 • Edema
 • Ear infections
 • Bronchitis, pneumonia, or tonsillitis
 • Chronic sinusitis
 • Cellulite

Now you can see why lymphatic health matters! There’s no need to run and hide because there are easy ways to get your lymphatic system moving again. See below.

Exercise

Since you are the pump that keeps your lymphatic system going, it relies on you to keep it moving. Sedentary people often feel fatigued, achy, stiff, or worn out, but regular movement can get your lymphatic fluid moving. Whether it is walking for 30 minutes per day, jumping rope, swimming, rebounding, or interval workouts, exercise is the best way to improve circulation, increase lymphatic drainage, and get your heart pumping.

Eat Clean

Establishing a clean, healthy eating plan will help you focus on nutrient dense foods that are free of chemicals, antibiotics, and additives, all of which can inhibit proper flow. When you control your external factors, e.g. diet or stress, you can decrease stress in the body. Treat your body right with cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, berries, omega-3 rich foods, raw nuts and seeds, healthy fats, and beneficial herbs like ginger, turmeric, garlic, and cumin. All of those foods help improve lymphatic flow.

Massage

Who doesn’t love a good massage? Next time you book a massage appointment, try to request a lymphatic massage that specifically targets lymphatic flow. The massage therapist will apply pressure and rhythmic movements in specific areas that stimulate the drainage of fluid and waste. Studies have shown that lymphatic massages can push up to 78% of stagnant lymph back into circulation.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils have been known to encourage lymphatic drainage, especially when you massage them around the inner and outer thighs, armpits, knees, and abdomen. Do not apply essential oils directly on the skin; rather, mix them with carrier oils like coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil. Massage in a circular, clockwise motion to move stagnant lymph nodes. The best oils to use include lemon essential oil, oregano essential oil, rosemary essential oil, helichrysum essential oil, or lemongrass essential oil.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing benefits both the circulatory and lymphatic systems. It is a practice that is very easy to do, so long as you have a brush with stiff bristles. Always brush towards your chest, starting from your hands and ankles. Be sure not to dry brush too hard, especially if you have sensitive skin. The reason you brush toward your chest is because that is where the lymphatic system drains. Click here for a more in depth article about dry brushing.

The post 6 Tips On How To Stay Warm On A Raw Foods Diet appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Winter is upon us, which means that it’s time to put on bulky coats, beanies, gloves, and scarves for warmth. After being out in the cold, most people like to come home and enjoy stews, oven baked delights, and hearty comforting meals, but you can’t do that if you are on a raw foods diet. A salad may not be at the top of the list when you walk in your house from the cold, so what do you eat to stay warm?

Whether you are eating a raw foods diet as part of one of our cleanses, or you’re just experimenting with a healthier lifestyle, eating cold food when you really want warm food can be challenging. The reality is that eating raw foods provides the body with the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally. The raw foods actually help to naturally detox your body, and this helps to increase circulation, which can make you feel warmer.

In case the cold just happens to go all the way through to your core, we have some tips on how to stay warm while eating raw foods. Try some of the following tips to keep warm and let us know if they work for you.

#1: Spice It Up

If you live in climates that are 32 degrees F or below, try putting cayenne pepper or cloves in socks or gloves. Some people may be sensitive and don’t want to put cayenne on their skin, and that’s completely acceptable. You can spice up your food with cayenne, ginger, black pepper, cumin, chili powder, curry, and garlic as well! Many of these spices go great in homemade salad dressings.

#2: Exercise

Exercise is a great way to get your blood flowing, and it helps warm you up. You can even break a sweat running in 20-degree weather. Get the juices going with a morning workout routine and try to stretch before dinner to help boost your metabolism.

#3: Use A Dehydrator

You can actually warm food in a dehydrator, so long as you don’t warm it above 115 degrees. Warming your food for about 10-15 minutes in the dehydrator is acceptable because it doesn’t destroy the enzymes in your food. If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can warm up a plate and serve your food on that. It’s hacks like that that will take your raw vegan game to the next level.

#4: Drink Warming Beverages

Herbal teas are probably the best for cold weather. Curl up under a fuzzy blanket and sip on chamomile, ginger, lemon, peppermint, or Echinacea tea to warm your soul. Additionally, you can drink lemon water and mix in fresh ginger or cayenne pepper to promote internal warmth.

#5: Dry Skin Brushing

Dry skin brushing is a great technique to increase circulation in the body. Take a brush with firm bristles and brush your skin from your arms and legs towards your heart, a practice that also promotes detoxification. Brushing away from the heart can disrupt proper circulation, so make a mental note to not do that.

#6: Make Your Meal Meaty

This does not mean that you should add meat to your meal; rather, it is best add meaty things like mushrooms, avocados, walnuts, almonds, or sun-dried tomatoes to your meals. Dark leafy greens also give your body sustenance, which helps keep you warm.

In case you haven’t noticed, dry brushing has become incredibly popular; and it’s not something to just brush aside either! After that terrible pun, we have to back it up with some good reasoning as to why dry brushing is an amazing practice for keeping your lymphatic system healthy.

What Is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing is a cleansing technique that belongs to Ayurveda. It takes less than five minutes to do and helps to soften your skin. One of the most important things to remember is to not wet your skin. Dry brushing, as the name suggests, is meant to be done without any moisture. It works to increase blood circulation, promote detoxification, strengthen the immune system, and reduce cellulite.

How To Dry Brush

It is best to dry brush in the morning before you shower. You can do this once or twice a day to help exfoliate the skin and make it look healthier. Using a brush with firm bristles, start lightly brushing the soles of feet and then continue brushing upwards on your legs. Don’t brush too hard; rather, use a combination of light and firm strokes and avoid sensitive areas like scars or rashes. A great rule of thumb is to always brush towards your chest, where the lymphatic system drains; do this until you have brushed your entire body (you can use a long-handled brush to get your back). Don’t dry brush for longer than five minutes. In fact, two to three minutes is ideal. Shower when you are finished to wash away dead skin cells.

Note: Your skin should never be red after dry brushing. Slightly pink is acceptable, but don’t brush so hard that your skin is in pain.

Getting Rid Of Cellulite

Dry brushing helps to increase circulation and break up cellulite. A great routine is to dry brush, rinse off, and then apply virgin coconut oil to the affected areas. The skin absorbs the natural properties of coconut oil and can help break up the toxins, which comprise the cellulite.

Exfoliate

People who dry brush for the first time typically experience this as the first benefit. The entire process of dry brushing removes dead skin cells to naturally exfoliate the skin. After the first few days, you should notice that your skin feels softer and clearer. It is recommended to avoid the face, though.

Lymphatic Support

The lymphatic system is made up of lymph nodes, organs, ducts, and vessels, which help to transport lymph (a fluid containing white blood cells) throughout the body. Running just below the skin, lymph needs healthy flow in order to naturally detoxify. Dry brushing helps to stimulate lymphatic flow and keep the lymphatic system healthy.

The lymphatic system is made up of glands, lymph nodes, the spleen, thymus gland, and tonsils. It works to bathe your body’s cells and carry cellular waste from bodily tissues to the blood, where it can be eliminated through the liver and kidneys. This waste is comprised of byproducts of our bodily processes, over-the-counter medications, narcotics, cigarette chemicals, environmental pollutants, food additives, pesticides, and more.

Roughly 80 percent of women have sluggish lymphatic systems. Getting your lymphatic system to flow smoothly is beneficial for weight loss and improved overall wellness. If you are experiencing arthritis, headaches, or have excess cellulite or weight, a sluggish lymphatic system may be the culprit. Boost your lymphatic system by using the following techniques.

#1: Breathe Deeply

The body contains three times more lymph fluid than blood, but no organ can pump lymph fluid. The lymphatic system solely relies on deep breathing to help it transport toxins to your blood. Take deep breaths to help yourself, or try taking up meditation!

#2: Exercise

Your lymphatic system can have a healthy flow if you exercise regularly. You don’t have to go crazy in the gym or become a power lifter, but light exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, pilates, or rebounding help to improve lymphatic flow.

#3: Stay Hydrated

Lymphatic fluid cannot flow properly if you do not supply the body with adequate water. Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water every day to stay properly hydrated. If you weight 150lbs and divide that by 2 to get 75, you should be drinking 75oz of water a day.

#4: Eat More Raw Fruit On An Empty Stomach

Raw fruits contain powerful enzymes and acids that help to cleanse your lymphatic system. When you eat fruit on an empty stomach, you can gain maximum lymph-cleansing benefits.

#5: Eat Raw, Unsalted Nuts and Seeds

Raw nuts and seeds work to power your lymph with essential fatty acids. The best nuts and seeds to eat include walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, Brazil nuts, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

#6: Drink Some Lymph-Boosting Herbal Teas

Some herbal teas that are great to drink for a healthy lymphatic system include astragalus, Echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot or wild indigo root. It is recommended to consult with an herbalist or natural medicine specialist before combining two or more herbs for consumption.

#7: Dry Skin Brushing

Before showering, use a brush with stiff bristles to brush your skin in circular motions toward your heart. The reason you brush towards your heart is because that is the direction lymph flows. Start with higher lymph node areas like your armpits or groin.

#8: Alternate Hot and Cold Showers

Jump in the shower and alternate between hot and cold water. Go as hot as you can handle and as cold as you can handle for several minutes in each temperature. The heat helps to dilate blood vessels, while the cold causes them to contract. If you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, avoid this natural remedy.
