If you are familiar with a clay face mask, you know that it works to cleanse your skin. There’s a feeling of rejuvenation when you rinse the mask off your face. You can visibly see that your skin is brighter, cleaner, and refreshed. If you have never experimented with a clay mask, this recipe is going to do wonders for your face.

Before you dive face first into this mask, you’re going to want a dust mask for safety. Grab one of your trusty COVID-19 masks and strap it on because the last thing you want to do is inhale the powders. Inhalation of the powders can be quite harmful to your lungs and respiratory system, so do you best to protect your nose and mouth while preparing the mask.

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a very porous substance that is processed at high temperatures. It’s a popular ingredient in beauty products because of the adsorption properties. Activated charcoal works to pull toxins and bacteria from your pores, leaving it extra clean and fresh. For people who suffer from acne, activated charcoal cleansers or masks can be beneficial because they deep clean pores and actually make them smaller. Additionally, several studies found that activated charcoal limits excess oil production.

Rhassoul Clay

Belonging to the smectite family of clays (same as bentonite), rhassoul clay has an ability to expand when exposed to a liquid. Rhassoul clay has several names, including red clay, Moroccan clay, and ghassoul clay. It comes from volcanic ash at the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. There isn’t much scientific data, but there are many anecdotal reports of the skin-enhancing benefits of rhassoul clay. It works to naturally exfoliate the skin, removing excess oil and dead skin cells. It also contributes to clearer skin that feels smoother and softer. It’s similar to activated charcoal in that it helps to lift impurities from the skin.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin clay, or white clay, is a soft clay that’s been used to make porcelain products in China for centuries. It also happens to be a popular addition to toothpastes, hair products, and skin care products. Kaolin clay has the ability to absorb oil and may contribute to smoother skin. Many people like to use kaolin clay as an exfoliant because it is gentler on the skin than other clays. Preliminary research suggests that it may offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits, which may help in treating rashes or irritation.

To make the mask fragrant and refreshing, you can include bergamot essential oil and ginger essential oil. If you can, purchase ginger essential oil that is free of CO2 because that will yield a proper, gingery smell. You can choose a different essential oil blend, but this combination may help brighten skin.

Homemade Clay Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons white kaolin clay
  • 1 tablespoon rhassoul clay
  • 1 teaspoon activated charcoal
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried calendula petals
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
  • 15 drops sea buckthorn seed oil
  • 13 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 10 drops ginger essential oil

Instructions:

  • Put on your dust mask and add the clays, charcoal, calendula petals, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate to a coffee or spice grinder.
  • Blend the mixture with the lid on for about three minutes.
  • Once you finish blending, keep the lid on and allow the dust to settle. Remove the top and scrape all of the powder into the grinder.
  • Drop the different oils into the grinder, place the top on, and blend for another 30 seconds. Make sure to wait three minutes once you finish blending.
  • Spoon the mixture into a glass jar and store it in a cool, dry place.
  • To use, spoon about half a teaspoon of the powder into your palm and combine it with a little warm water.
  • Work it gently between your hands before massaging it into your face. Leave it on for five minutes and then rinse with warm water.
  • Pat your face dry and apply the moisturizer of your choosing.

It’s no secret that everyone makes mistakes. The beauty of humans is that we are not perfect, but we have the ability to acknowledge imperfections and change for the better. One of the biggest changes we can make is to switch from unhealthy skin care products to natural homemade products. This seems like a hard transition, but it’s a lot simpler than you think. We’ll hold your hand to help you bridge the gap, and you can start with a simple face wash.

Acne is one of the most common skin problems in the world. Everyone is prone to breakouts, but they may not always result from poor dietary choices. Often times, the harsh chemicals in commercial skin care products contribute to frequent breakouts. Items that supposedly cleanse the skin and remove bacterial build-up end up clogging your pores. When you take the time to simplify and use natural ingredients, though, you’ll notice a positive change in your skin.

Raw Honey For Your Skin

Why should you lather your skin with something that sweetens your tea? As it turns out, people have used honey on their skin for centuries. It has powerful antibacterial properties that historically aided with wound healing and skin cleansing. Raw honey works to moisturize the skin from within. It can do this because honey’s enzymes easily penetrate the skin, softening and hydrating it from the inside. It also works to cleanse pores of blackheads. The antiseptic and antibacterial properties work to remove dirt, while simultaneously hydrating and tightening pores. This contributes to a clearer complexion.

Tea Tree Oil For Your Skin

Where do we begin? Tea tree oil is nature’s secret weapon. Research has shown that tea tree oil exhibits powerful antibacterial, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. One of its most popular uses is to help get rid of acne. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help to unclog pores, reduce redness, and reduce the frequency of breakouts. Tea tree oil may also enhance the natural glow of your skin. One study found that using tea tree oil in combination with a carrier oil on the face helped reduce oiliness. It also helps to hydrate the skin, and it even out-performed benzoyl peroxide for reducing dryness and flakiness.

Jojoba Oil For Your Skin

Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oils to use on your skin. It’s a lighter oil, so it doesn’t feel heavy or thick after topical application. It works to hydrate the skin and provides optimal moisture by mimicking the skin’s natural oils. Jojoba oil actually tricks the skin into thinking that it has produced enough oil, eliminating the risk of excess oil production. The antibacterial properties also aid with acne reduction and controlled oil production. The high iodine content in jojoba oil helps to fight bacterial growth, which can cause breakouts. Finally, jojoba oil is the ultimate hydrator for your skin. By increasing natural moisture, jojoba oil contributes to a healthier, brighter glow.

DIY Toning & Clarifying Face Wash

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1/4 cup liquid Castile soap
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a dispenser bottle in the order that they are listed. Do not pour them in out of order or you will experience a soap disaster.
  • Gently stir the mixture to combine the ingredients. The mixture will look cloudy, but that is completely normal.
  • Place your dispenser bottle on your bathroom sink and use as you please.

How To Use:

  • Use one or two pumps of the soap and apply to your face. Rinse with lukewarm water after application.
  • It’s best to use once or twice daily. Make sure to give it a shake before each use.
  • If you don’t finish it within a month, discard the soap and make a new batch.

You can lather your skin with scrubs, masks, toners, oils, lotions, and more, but they don’t always make your skin look flawless. Sometimes, you need to take your beauty routine to the next level if you want to rejuvenate the skin. We’re not saying you have to dip your face in the fountain of youth; rather, a simple facial steam is the answer you seek.

What Is Facial Steaming?

Facial steaming is a simple process that works to enhance skin cleansing, promote circulation, release trapped sebum, and increase hydration. Steam opens your pores to soften blackheads and aid the release of acne-causing bacteria that clog pores. By increasing circulation to the face, you can experience an increase in collagen and elastin production. This promotes smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin. It’s also beneficial for people who have sinus problems. There’s really no downside to this practice!

Benefits of Facial Steaming

Reduces Excess Sebum

Sebum is the natural oil that sebaceous glands produce, and it lubricates the skin and hair. When sebum gets trapped under the skin’s surface, it’s easy for bacteria to multiply and cause blemishes and blackheads. When you open your pores with a facial steam, this trapped sebum can release and you’ll be less prone to blackheads and blemishes.

Promotes Relaxation

The warmth of a facial steam is relaxing for both your skin and your mind. Adding different herbs or essential oils to the steam can aid with relaxation. Additionally, many herbs and essential oils assist with skin cleansing and moisturizing. During your facial steam, try your best to focus on your breath. The goal is to take long, slow inhales and exhales, which promotes a stress-relieving benefit.

Cleansing Impurities

When you remove impurities or built-up bacteria from your pores, it’s possible to experience much clearer skin. Facial steaming helps to remove bacteria or other grime that can clog pores, leading to blackheads or blemishes. If you find that you suffer from stubborn blackheads, a facial steam is the right treatment for you. The steam helps to soften blackheads, making it easier to remove them. It also aids with the removal of dead skin cells!

Affordable And Easy

There’s no need to break the bank to improve your facial skin. A facial steam is mostly boiled water, and the rest of the ingredients are up to you. You can open tea bags and empty the contents into the bowl, or you can purchase some trusty essential oils for the job (tea tree and eucalyptus are great). The bottom line is that this is a useful home remedy that can drastically improve the health of your skin.

DIY Facial Steam

Ingredients:

  • Boiled water
  • 1 tablespoon dried elderflower
  • 1 tablespoon dried calendula
  • 1 tablespoon dried nettles
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosehips
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

  • Wash your face with lukewarm water to remove any grime or build-up.
  • Pour boiling water into a large, heat-safe bowl and add in all of the herbs.
  • Grab a large towel, lean over the bowl, and drape the towel over your head and the bowl, creating a tent.
  • Make sure you’re in a comfortable position because you should stay here for 10-15 minutes.
  • Once you finish this process, exit the tent and rinse your face with cold water to tighten your pores.
  • Pat your face dry and finish with a gentle, natural moisturizer.

Have you noticed some deep pores on your face lately? Good thing we are swooping in to rescue your skin with an amazing deep cleansing face mask recipe. The great thing about this mask is that you’ll notice an immediate reduction in the pores, but you may also see improved skin tone, reduced acne, and a more youthful glow.

The one-two punch combo of apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay removes impurities, such as oils, dead skin cells, and other bacteria that remain on your face. Both of these ingredients work to promote smoother skin, fewer breakouts, and a reduction in the appearance of your pores. Not only are these ingredients natural and effective, but they are also inexpensive, which means that you don’t have to drop your life savings on “miracle” masks or solutions that improve facial skin.

Bentonite Clay For Skin

The theory behind bentonite clay is that it adsorbs materials by sticking to their molecules. When you remove the clay from the skin, it takes the impurities along with it. The adsorbent properties may be beneficial for those who commonly experience acne breakouts or those who have oily skin. When there is too much oil on the skin, people commonly experience blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples as a result. The clay binds to the bacteria in your pores, unclogging them and improving the overall health of your skin by allowing your pores to breathe.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Skin

Apple cider vinegar is rich in acetic, citric, malic, and amino acids, all of which are beneficial for your skin. If you have been struggling to keep acne at bay, turn to apple cider vinegar because it contains antibacterial and antifungal properties that assist with keeping your pores clean. Many people use apple cider vinegar to help exfoliate because the alpha hydroxyl acid removes dead skin cells to encourage the growth of health new ones.

Disclaimer: Do not use metal utensils or dishware when making recipes with bentonite clay. They leach metals into the clay and make it ineffective. Also, if you have sensitive skin, apply a thin layer at first and leave it on for half the time. You can also batch test it first to see how you react.

2 Ingredient Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
  • 1 teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  • Wash your face with water and a natural cleanser to remove any dirt or built-up oils.
  • Add the bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar to a glass mixing bowl and stir with a wooden spoon to combine.
  • Once you’ve achieved a paste consistency, apply the mask to your face.
  • Leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes, and then rinse the mask off using warm water. You may have to scrub to remove it.
  • Your skin may look a little pink in the immediate minutes after removing your mask but this is normal, especially since the clay increases blood flow as it pulls out toxins.

Most people have a go-to skin care routine, which includes some type of cleanser, moisturizer, and maybe even a mask. Have you ever thought about adding a face scrub to your routine? Face scrubs may be some of the best ways to boost the health of your skin. Keep reading if you want to learn about how to make your own face scrubs, and what they can do for your skin.

The Benefits Of Face Scrubs

The skin is constantly exposed to environmental pollutants, in addition to oils, dirt, and the accumulation of dead skin cells. The buildup of all of these toxins can cause the skin to appear flaky, dry, old, and even run-down. Don’t you want your skin to look clean and refreshed all the time? Enter face scrubs, which help to exfoliate the skin and penetrate pores to clean them out. Unlike some commercial cleansers, face scrubs leave the face feeling hydrated and moisturized.

Why Is Exfoliation Necessary?

As we previously mentioned, old skin cells and grime accumulate on the skin. Exfoliation is the process of removing those dead skin cells to allow for the growth of newer, healthier skin cells. While exfoliation is necessary, you must remember over-exfoliating must be avoided. Exfoliating too frequently can cause inflammation, irritated skin, or dry skin.

Coffee For The Skin

The reason that both of the face scrubs in this article contain coffee grounds is because they are excellent for exfoliating. The grounds do not dissolve in water, making them excellent for scrubbing away dead skin cells. According to a 2013 study, the caffeic acid (an antioxidant) in coffee helps to boost collagen levels and reduce the amount of premature aging cells. The antimicrobial properties of caffeic acid also protect the skin from bacteria.

Detoxifying Coffee Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds
  • 5 teaspoons activated charcoal

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients into a glass jar and mix well.
  • Screw on the lid of the jar and store in a cool dry place.
  • Use this scrub to exfoliate about two or three times per week at the most.

Coffee Sugar Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ Kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 2-4 tablespoons citrus zest (use lemons, oranges, limes, or grapefruit)

Instructions:

  • Warm the coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Once it is melted, pour the coconut oil into a bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Mix well.
  • Divide this scrub between four 4-ounce jars or containers with lids and store in a cool dry place.
  • When ready to use, scrub about one teaspoon onto your face in a circular motion for 60 seconds. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

From the time of adolescence through adulthood, each person develops some sort of skin care routine. Some seem to have clear skin with a minimal regimen, while others buy an assortment of masks, cleansers, moisturizers, and more to keep the skin looking healthy. Have you ever looked at the ingredients in these products, though? What are you putting on your skin and could it be doing more harm than good?

Certain cosmetic products that claim to “turn back time” or be “the fountain of youth” are convincing advertising campaigns, but the chemical ingredients in the majority of these cosmetics can be harmful to the skin. Just like processed foods, cosmetic companies also use chemical preservatives to make their products shelf-stable. All of these parabens and other chemicals can be absorbed into the bloodstream by way of application on the skin. This happens the same way a nicotine patch delivers nicotine into the bloodstream, for example.

It can be taxing to analyze every single ingredient of every skin product you purchase, but it doesn’t mean you should ignore these ingredients either. A 2005 study screened for over 400 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies. The findings indicated that there were 287 toxins in the blood, 208 of which are known to cause birth defects, and 217 of which are known neurotoxins. While some of these toxins came from dietary sources, others were linked to the use of skin care products.

Despite knowing the harm that these chemicals can cause, some people continue to expose themselves to them. The use of lotions, sunscreens, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, face washes, and more increases your exposure to chemicals. Now, we aren’t expecting you to become a hermit and make your own soaps and lotions from tree sap, but you can take the time to choose skin care products that are chemical-free and made more responsibly. You can also purchase ingredients to make DIY skin care products, like the following moisturizers.

  • Make a double boiler by filling a saucepan halfway with water and placing it over medium heat. Once it starts to boil, lower the heat to a simmer and top with a heat-safe glass bowl.

  • Store the container in a cool dry place and use a dime-size amount to moisturize your face after you wash and dry it.

Lemon Butter Moisturizer

  • 2 tablespoons cold-pressed coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons organic Shea butter
  • juice of 2 lemons
  • ¼ teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

  • Remove from the heat and pour into glass jar for storage. Store in your medicine cabinet and use a dime-size amount to moisturize after washing and drying your face.

  • 5 teaspoons sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops tea tree oil
  • 7 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon avocado oil

When you hear the word “chamomile,” you immediately feel some sense of tranquility. It is a peaceful, relaxing herb that offers comfort and soothing, especially when you have a cold or sore throat. It’s incredibly versatile and has a variety of health benefits, but rarely do people use it for all that it has to offer. For instance, chamomile has the ability to reduce acne scars and provide relief from skin irritations. The antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-fungal properties make it the perfect ingredient for maintaining healthy skin.

Benefits of Chamomile

Anti-Aging

The antioxidants in chamomile help to brighten the complexion and give the skin a youthful glow, but they also work to protect the skin from free radical damage. Working to balance the skin’s pH level, chamomile helps to tighten pores, slow down the aging process, and accelerate cell and tissue regeneration.

Dark Circles Be Gone

People who throw away used bags of chamomile tea have been throwing away natural remedies for dark circles under the eyes. After drinking a cup of chamomile tea, place the tea bags in the fridge to cool them. When your eyes are feeling heavy or drained, place the chilled chamomile bags on your eyes to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

Reduces Acne

Are you at war with breakouts? Acne is typically related to impurities in the blood, so we suggest cleansing the blood to improve your complexion. If a cleanse is not in the cards at the moment, you can use dried chamomile flowers to help reduce scars, fight breakouts, and fade dark spots. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties help to clear up your skin.

While chamomile is an impressive natural remedy, we would be lying if we said that it was the only star of the show for this face wash. Raw honey is an especially valuable cosmetic ingredient that works to even out skin tone, reduce acne, and heal scars. Because of the way honey is created, the natural enzyme activity and healing bacteria unite to generate powerful healing properties.

Benefits of Raw Honey

Lightening and Brightening

According to several studies, the exfoliating properties of raw honey help to reduce dark spots on your skin. Raw honey also works to remove dead skin cells, which make your skin look run-down and older. Washing your face with honey can help remove bacteria and cleanse the pores, making your skin brighter in the process.

Scar Fading

Raw honey works to accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Many people use raw honey as a spot treatment for scars, or as a face mask to reduce acne scars. More research needs to be done on the scar reducing properties, but current research points toward the fact that raw honey is beneficial for burn scars and scars from deep cuts.

For Acne

When you use honey for acne, especially acne that is on your face, it is crucial to use organic raw unfiltered honey. The reason for this is because raw honey contains healthy bacteria that work to cleanse pores, reduce inflammation and redness, and heal blemishes. Manuka honey is also beneficial for face masks or scrubs.

DIY Face Wash

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unscented castile soap
  • 75 cups filtered water
  • 2-3 tablespoons organic raw unfiltered honey
  • 8 teaspoons almond oil
  • 5 tablespoons dried chamomile flowers
  • 12 drops melaleuca essential oil
  • 12 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops cold pressed rosehip seed oil
  • 1 glass foaming soap dispenser

Instructions:

  • Create a double boiler by filling a medium saucepan halfway with water and placing it over medium heat. Once the water is simmering, reduce the heat to low and place a metal bowl on the saucepan.
  • Pour the almond oil into the bowl and stir in the chamomile flowers. Let this infuse for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the time has elapsed, remove from heat and let it cool for 5-10 minutes.
  • Strain the oil through a cheesecloth into a glass jar. Set aside.
  • Pour the water into the soap dispenser and then add the soap and infused almond oil. Screw the lid on the dispenser and shake to combine.
  • Once the bubbles have settled, pour the honey, rosehip oil, lavender essential oil, and melaleuca essential oil into the soap dispenser.
  • Tighten the lid, give it a shake, and dispense a foam dollop into your hand to cleanse your face after all that hard work.
