We did it, folks. We managed to list every single ingredient in the title of this recipe, minus the ginger water. Now, there are many things that people should tell you in this life. Such instances include:

 • When your zipper is down
 • When your shirt is inside out
 • If a pocket on your purse or backpack is open
 • If you have toilet paper on your shoe
 • When you have a giant booger hanging out of your nose

These are just things that people should tell you. You know what else people should tell you? It’s that beets are incredible. Not only are they good for you, but they also taste great and go great in juices, smoothies, salads, or roasted vegetable medleys. Chances are that if you were never exposed to beets, you don’t include them in your diet. They have a reputation of tasting like dirt, but that’s only if you do not know how to prepare them.

In the case of this beet smoothie, you hardly notice the earthy flavor. That is because you blend them with other sweet and tangy ingredients, including carrots, oranges, and bananas. Carrots, oranges, and beets make for an excellent trio, but you need the banana to help make the smoothie creamy. The banana also lends another element of sweetness to this beet smoothie. Want to make an even creamier smoothie? Freeze the banana pieces overnight before blending them.

When you find something that you like, especially a smoothie, it can be hard not to stick to it. That’s how we feel about green smoothies, anyway. Most people struggle to find a green smoothie that they actually enjoy. A green smoothie that is too bitter or tastes like fresh cut grass doesn’t entice your taste buds to return to that flavor. Mix the right fruits with the right greens, though, and you’ll set yourself up for success.

The great thing about this detox smoothie is that it contains many beneficial ingredients that support the body in myriad ways. So as not to bore you, we are going to focus on two standout ingredients that aid the body’s natural detoxification processes: grapefruit and pineapple. Both of these ingredients aid the body in the following ways:

Grapefruit: This citrus fruit exhibits antiseptic properties and acts as a digestive tonic. Many studies have found grapefruit to be highly beneficial for the lymphatic system, as it boosts lymph gland activity. That can help remove lymphatic waste and prevent circulatory issues, allergies, fluid retention, breakouts, and even cellulite.

Pineapple: Pineapple is a great ingredient for your detox smoothie, particularly because it aids digestion and is full of nutrients. One cup of pineapple contains almost 75% of your recommended daily intake of manganese. Pineapples are naturally rich in carotenes, flavonoids, and polyphenols, all of which work to neutralize free radicals and aid the removal of toxins from the liver and bloodstream.

If you see a recipe for avocado salad dressing, you can usually expect cilantro and lime juice to be prominent ingredients. This recipe contains lime juice but not contain cilantro, so it takes a departure from the Latin-inspired flavor profile. This avocado salad dressing is a bit more herbaceous, almost like a green goddess dressing of sorts. It is quite vibrant and rich, exhibiting a lot aromatic flavors that come from green onion, parsley, dill, and basil.

The ingredient list for this dressing is far from short, meaning there are layers and layers of flavors. Avocados, however, are the prominent ingredients and provide a smooth and creamy base for this dressing. Not only that, but they also provide lots of nutrients that are essential to your overall health. Research indicates that the body can absorb lycopene and beta-carotene, two key carotenoid antioxidants, more easily when you consume fresh avocado with your salads. If you add one cup of fresh avocado to a salad with some romaine, spinach, and carrots, your body’s ability to absorb the carotenoids increases between 200-400%.

The essential fatty acids in avocados may help reduce inflammatory markers in the body, which can aid both brain and heart function. Avocados also play a role in keeping your immune system functioning optimally. They are naturally rich in glutathione, which is a detoxifying agent. Additionally, glutathione helps to cleanse the body of oxidized fat. Is there anything that they can’t do? Please enjoy avocados in this dressing, and whenever you get the chance!

The post 5 TikTok Gut Health Trends To Question Or Avoid appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It should be common knowledge, but you should not believe everything you see or read on the Internet, especially social media. And yet, TikTok has become a growing source of information for all sorts of health information, especially gut health. In fact, you can regularly see hashtags like #pooptok, #guthealthmatters, #guttok, and #guthealing on numerous videos. It’s pretty clear that the matters of the gut have infiltrated the social media platform.

A lot of health experts, including gastroenterologists and other gastrointestinal (GI) experts, have joined TikTok to promote science-backed claims and advice. The reason for this is because most #guttok posts are not from experts in the field. Would you rather trust an influencer who tried one thing at one point in time, or someone who has dedicated their life to the study of the GI tract? Wellness tips are all well and good, but not all of them are correct.

The good news about all of this is that people are encouraging others to care about their digestive health. When it comes to claims, however, not all of these videos have evidence to back them up. Sometimes, one of these videos will promote a product that aids gut health, such as a colon cleanse or colon detox solution. Don’t just trust something that you see in a video without doing thorough research on it! There are no miracle products, which is why we aim to highlight the TikTok gut health trends to question or avoid in this article.

Gut Repair Or Leaky Gut Solutions

If you hear about a product, method, or solution that will repeat your leaky or damaged gut, it may not be what it’s cracked to be. Drinking olive oil shots or slurping on bone broth all day don’t have evidence backing efficacy for treating the problem. The problem is thinking that leaky gut syndrome can be fixed with one quick solution. Although leaky gut is not a medically recognized condition, it is a gut problem that can happen as a result of an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). You can sip bone broth in moderation, but don’t expect it to heal your gut. If you decide to drink bone broth, find ones higher in magnesium, calcium, and iron. Olive oil, while it has beneficial polyphenols and healthy fats, will not repair your gut on its own.

Laxatives For Weight Loss

If you are a #guttok trend follower, perhaps you know of the claim that taking laxatives regularly can promote weight loss. If that is a true claim, it should be a big red flag. The goal of taking a laxative is to relieve symptoms caused by constipation, not to lose weight. If you take a laxative to lose weight, you are eliminating undigested food in the form of diarrhea. That can be dangerous if it goes on for more than a short period of time. You need to absorb sufficient fluids from the GI tract, otherwise you could potentially injure your kidneys. People who suffer from constipation may need to take a laxative to eliminate stool in the colon. You should not rely on laxatives to lose weight, but instead use them to relieve constipation symptoms.

Fasting For Gut Health

Fasting is not a new trend. In fact, it has been practiced for centuries in different forms across different cultures. In most cases, there is nothing wrong with fasting, and it has actually been linked to certain health benefits. For example, one review found that intermittent fasting potentially improved metabolic effects, including better blood glucose control and fat loss. That said, fasting can also lead to negative emotions, including anxiety, irritability, and fatigue. One review found that intermittent fasting led to changes in gut bacteria that may regulate body functions and promote healthy metabolism. Fasting may improve GI symptoms for some, but there isn’t sufficient evidence to say that it directly benefits gut health

Colon Cleanse Or Detox Protocols

Should you avoid products or regimens that claim they can expel all the waste from your colon or purge it of toxins? You usually see these concoctions in beverage or shake form and they include cayenne, lemon juice, honey, or other similar ingredients. The idea is that a colon cleanse is the best way to benefit your digestive health. Most gastroenterologists agree that you only want to purge your colon of food or microbes before a colonoscopy. There is no reason to completely flush out your colon just because it’s Tuesday. A healthy colon contains a variety of bacteria and other organisms, the microbiome. It also contains mostly digested food that is in the process of becoming stool. A healthy colon contains a diverse microbiome that helps regulate immune function, metabolism, and even your mood! Don’t just evacuate your colon and think that your gut will flourish!

DIY Fermented Foods

There is no denying the gut-promoting powers of fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, natto, and kombucha. During fermentation, bacteria grow in a controlled environment, converting carbs or fiber in the food into an acid. That bacteria-produced acid gives fermented foods that signature sour flavor. There are many bioactive compounds in fermented foods that can be beneficial for your gut. The problem with DIY fermented foods is that you may not ferment in a way that promotes the growth of these beneficial bacteria. If you are determined to make fermented foods, instead of buying them in the store, seek reputable guidance and buy the correct products to ensure you ferment correctly. Don’t just take the word of some TikToker!

]]>

If there is one thing that is consistent with the beginning of the year, it is the desire to either get healthy, get fit, or lose weight. Losing weight, or detoxing, is a common New Year’s resolution because of all the holiday eating that happens before the beginning of the year. Most holiday meals are heavy, carb-centric, and full of unhealthy fats, sugar and sodium. People have the power to eat unhealthy throughout the year, though. We want to help you dig yourself out of the hole of heavy meals and into a healthier, lighter self.

Detoxing does not mean that you have to abstain from food. On the contrary, you want to eat food, but it has to be food that provides essential nutrients to the body. Additionally, you want to eliminate unwanted sugars, processed foods, and excess carbohydrates. Finally, flood the body with water and herbal teas to properly hydrate and flush toxins from your system. Below, you’ll find some helpful tips to detox after a lot of heavy eating.

Drink Healthy Waters

This is not an endorsement to purchase bottled sugary, electrolyte beverages from the store. If the color is reminiscent of a nuclear fluid (think lime green, blue, or bright yellow), you can count that out. Good old fashioned filtered water is life, but you can enhance this water to encourage detoxification. Add fresh cucumber slices, lime wedges, orange wheels, berries, pineapple cubes, and herbs to your water. Infusing these types of ingredients into your water can impart their nutrients into the liquid. Not only do they enhance the nutritional properties of your water, but they also make your water taste that much better!

Load Up On Negative Calorie Foods

There is no such thing as a food that has zero calories. There are, however, foods that are so light in calories that the body burns just as much or more calories digesting them. The idea behind detoxing is that you want to give the body a lot of nutrients and water. Foods that are very low in calories and high in water include cucumbers, asparagus, apples, watermelon, blueberries, lettuce, cantaloupe, broccoli, and cauliflower. The combination of the nutrients and water content will help the body flush out all the excess food you consumed.

Don’t Be Afraid To Nap

It should be noted that you can nap too much. If you decide to nap, especially in the afternoon, try to keep naps to 20-30 minutes in length. Sleeping too much can negatively affect your sleep cycle, or make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Sleep is necessary for the body, as it is the body’s way of rejuvenating itself. Just don’t rest too much, or you will feel groggy and out of sorts. Lack of sleep can negatively affect digestion, metabolism, and energy levels, which impairs your ability to naturally detox.

Dry Brush Your Body

Dry brushing is a way of stimulating lymphatic flow. The lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins, but you need to activate it in order to facilitate this process. In order to promote lymphatic detoxification, you just have to move, but you can also use a technique called dry brushing. You can give yourself a lymphatic massage with your hands, or you can use a brush with firm bristles. The easiest way to start is to brush is to start with the feet and legs, always brushing up towards the heart. Once you get to your thighs, start at your palms and work inwards toward the heart. You can then do the abdomen and armpits, followed by the back and face. Click here to learn more about dry brushing.

Get To Sweating

The gyms are more crowded than ever in the beginning of the year. People are filled with ambition and ready to drop some pounds! You don’t need a gym membership to get your sweat on, though. Not only does exercise encourage you to sweat, but it also boosts your mood. Sweating is one of the body’s way of getting rid of excess toxins. If you feel puffy after a lot of heavy eating, your body is most likely retaining water, especially if that food was heavy on the salt and sugar. A good sweat session can help you de-puff and get you out of your funk. After an aerobic workout, consider getting in the sauna to sweat even more.

Is there a better way to welcome in the new year than to supply the body with nutrient-dense foods? If you partied hard on New Year’s Eve, chances are that you need to reset the body. Although the beginning of the year marks a fresh start for the majority of people, there is never a wrong time to begin anew. Any day of any month is a chance to start living a healthier life. This recipe just happens to coincide with the beginning of a new year.

One of the best foods to promote detoxification is the mighty beetroot. You just can’t beat beets! Fresh beets, not the ones from the can, help to increase energy levels, boost immune function, and regulate the body’s natural metabolic process. Studies show that beets contain betacyanin, which is an antioxidant that exhibits anti-carcinogenic properties that are particularly effective against colon cancer. Beets are also a great liver cleanser, with some researchers arguing that there is no better friend to your liver than beetroot.

Although beets have an impressive nutritional profile, we don’t want to neglect the other ingredients in this smoothie. Apples are great sources of fiber and provide the body with vitamin C and potassium. Oranges also give your body a healthy dose of vitamin C, while carrots provide beta-carotene, vitamin K1, biotin, and vitamin B6. Needless to say, this smoothie isn’t lacking in nutrients and will propel you toward your healthy resolutions.

The post 5 Ways To Detox After The Holidays appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It’s very easy to jump off the healthy wagon during the holidays. You somehow continue to indulge, even with the small voice in the back of your head that says, “Don’t eat all of that sugar.” It’s almost too difficult to resist all of the scrumptious foods that come with the holiday season. So what do you do? You promise yourself that you will detox after the holidays, and the goal is to honor that agreement. This article aims to give you five helpful tips that promote that detoxification process.

The reason that you want to detox immediately after the holidays is so that you don’t continue indulging until January 1st. You are less likely to start the year on a healthier path if you go completely off the rails right up to the year’s end. Detoxing in the days leading up to the new year can propel you into better health; plus, it keeps you more accountable.

We know that the word “detox” comes with a lot of baggage, and it is intimidating to most people. You don’t have to worry about a crash diet or water fast because the body is resilient and knows how to detox itself. Think of the following tips like little helpers that encourage the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Drink Warm Water With Lemon

Any time you go overboard with food, you should drink more water than usual, especially to start your day. Go one step further and add some fresh lemon juice to a glass of warm water and continue sipping it throughout the day. Lemons have their own health benefits, but combining them with warm water can help promote healthy digestion and hydration. Hydration is paramount after your big holiday meals because water helps your liver and kidneys filter out toxins.

Tea Time

Sipping on a little tea before and after meals can help keep your metabolism and digestive system firing on all cylinders. There are certain teas, however, that may come to your aid after a day of heavy eating. Fennel tea, for example, works to relieve digestive troubles, including bloating, flatulence, indigestion, constipation, and heartburn. Fennel also works to stimulate digestion and even has carminative effects that prevent the formation of gas by soothing the digestive tract. Peppermint tea can also help soothe your stomach and help get rid of bloating. If you are a nursing mother, steer clear of peppermint tea because it is an anti-galactagogue and will decrease milk supply.

Yoga

If you want to help bring more balance and energy to your entire body, yoga is the quickest way to do so. According to yogis, including a quick yoga sequence into your day can help ignite your digestive fire and get rid of bloating. In fact, you can click here to learn about the best yoga poses to help get rid of bloating. You’ll be feeling like you never overindulged in no time!

Skip The Coffee

We know…you need that coffee to face the world, but you really don’t. A jolt of java may help you get out of bed, but it also builds up a sugar and carbohydrate craving for the rest of the day. So what should you sip in place of coffee to help digestion and give you a little energy? Studies show that drinking a cup of green tea can help settle your stomach after a large meal. Green tea contains a potent plant compound known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which prevents cholesterol build-up in the arteries. One study found that EGCG can speed up weight loss by 77%, in addition to helping balance blood sugar levels to keep cravings at bay

Eat Raw Vegetables With Every Meal

In addition to eating cooked vegetables, try to include more raw vegetables with your post-holiday meals. Raw vegetables contain lots of fiber and they help to remove toxins from your body. By encouraging the elimination of waste, you reduce your risk of bloat or the build-up of gas. Fruits are also naturally rich in fiber, so consider starting your day with a fruit and vegetable smoothie. Spinach, bananas, apples, berries, and a little dairy-free milk make an excellent, nutrient-dense smoothie that can help regulate your system and fill you up.

Soups can comforting and nourishing, especially when vegetables are the stars of the show. Some soups, especially canned varieties, are incredibly unhealthy because they contain unhealthy fats, excess carbs, and too much sodium or sugar. After a day or weekend of unhealthy eating, the last thing you want is a warm bowl of soup that makes you feel fat and bloated. That’s why we created this recipe! It contains a ton of nutrient-dense vegetables and it is low in calories.

Many of the vegetables in this soup contain anti-inflammatory properties, which work to reduce pain and inflammation. Detox soups, such as this recipe, are very easy on the digestive system. As a clarification, a detox soup is not some boring cabbage soup diet from the 1980s; rather, it is a tasty bowl of nutritious ingredients and flavors. The ingredients are often rich in fiber, which helps move food through the digestive tract to regulate bowel movements. The vitamins and minerals also work to provide valuable antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and oxidative stress in the body.

Other than chopping the vegetables, this soup is very easy to make, but it does take a little time. You begin with a classic mirepoix, which is the combination of onions, carrots, and celery. Only you take it up a notch with this soup by including sweet potatoes. Once those ingredients are soft, you can add the tomatoes, beans, broth, and continue seasoning with sea salt and pepper. The seasoning process happens throughout, so be sure to taste and add a little more sea salt and pepper (if necessary) as you go. Happy detoxing with this soup after some heavy holiday eating.

The post Can A One-Day Cleanse Improve Your Gut Health? appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

The one thing that people worry about when considering a detox plan or cleanse is the time it takes to plan everything. If you don’t have food prepared, how will your cravings influence your food decisions? Will you be able to resist the temptation of food that you cannot enjoy during your detox plan? Although these are valid questions, you don’t want to view a cleanse or detox program in a negative light. It is always better to look at the bright side, because cleansing your body can make a difference to your overall health.

What Is A One-Day Cleanse?

This specific cleanse for the gut was developed by Kimberly Snyder, a nutritionist. Her goal was to help detox the body without making you feel hungry or starved. Because the cleanse only lasts one day, it is relatively easy to deal with and even easier to follow. Even if you have a busy schedule, you can follow this cleanse. Continue reading to learn how this cleanse works.

Drink Hot Lemon Water When You Wake Up

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) endorses the consumption of warm liquid because it helps balance your qi, or internal energy. Studies confirm that warm water kickstarts the digestive process, but so does lemon juice. The combination of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice can also give you a little energy boost. Plus, you get to start your day with some vitamin C, an essential nutrient for healthy skin and immune function. After you brush your teeth, just go ahead and drink this.

Drink A Green Smoothie For Breakfast

We’ve said this time and time again, but a green smoothie is a great way to sneak more veggies into your day. Smoothies are pre-digested, meaning your body doesn’t have to work hard to digest the foods and absorb their nutrients. Make sure to include different fruits and greens in your smoothie for a diverse nutritional intake. Should you need some inspiration, click here to view our many smoothie recipes. Don’t forget that adding some almond or peanut butter will add more healthy fat and protein to your smoothie.

A Snack And Mid-Morning Detox Tea

Instead of a mid-morning coffee, consider drinking a simple detox tea. Add cayenne pepper, a few ginger slices, and fresh lemon juice to boiling water. This tea works to break down mucus and toxins in the body, and also protects you from harmful bacteria. If you need a recipe for a lemon ginger turmeric detox tea, click here. For your snack, consider enjoying some fresh fruit or a handful of raw nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, or pistachios.

What’s For Lunch?

Ideally, you make a large salad for lunch with an assortment of colorful vegetables. Choose your green, or greens, and then add other ingredients like celery, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted beets, radish, or fresh herbs. Different vegetables contain different antioxidants and phytonutrients, which help to counteract oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Your work doesn’t end with a bowl of vegetables, though. You need a nutritious dressing that you make from scratch because store bought dressings contain excess sodium, saturated fats, sugars, and preservatives. Click here for a list of great salad and dressing recipes.

A Mid-Afternoon Snack

Depending on your hunger level, you may or may not need a mid-afternoon snack. If your stomach starts to growl, consider snacking on some carrot, celery, or bell pepper sticks with a dip. Hummus can be a great dip option, or you can put some almond butter in the celery sticks to help fill you up. Just don’t dip your vegetables in store bought ranch dressing.

A Warm Veggie Bowl For Dinner

The last meal is a reminder that your one-day cleanse is nearly complete! Dinner can be a tough challenge because you may want to resort to common dishes that are not necessarily the healthiest options. Consider keeping your dinner a lot lighter than your lunch, as eating too much food close to bedtime can interfere with the digestive process. Consider a vegetable soup or stew, or a bowl of quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, chickpeas, and fresh vegetables. You can also make a sheet pan of roasted vegetables and enjoy that for dinner!

You’ll realize that your body feels better after a day of eating various whole food ingredients. These foods are much easier for the body to digest, so the way you feel may convince you to incorporate more of these types of meals into your daily diet.
