Do you suffer from crow’s feet, dark circles, or puffy bags under the eyes? Even if you hydrate throughout the day, those pesky bags show up the morning after. Sometimes, you just don’t get the sleep you need and you wake up looking like a zombie. Whatever the reason, puffy eyes and dark circles are not welcome and we have a great cooling face mask to help get rid of them.

Don’t you just love getting food on your face? Sorry, let’s rephrase that. Don’t you love putting food on your face because it has healing properties that can improve the health of your skin? You don’t need a lot of food; rather, a cucumber, coconut oil, and some aloe vera will do the trick! If you want to get fancy and take things up a notch, add a few drops of carrot seed essential oil to help regenerate and renew the skin under your eyes

Unlike other face masks that we’ve posted in the past, this face mask is not a concoction that you lather on your face. After blending the ingredients together to form a smooth cream, you transfer the mixture to an ice tray and freeze. When your eyes are puffy, pop out a cube, apply all around the eye area, leave on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse away. It’s so refreshing and cooling!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains small- and medium-chain fatty acids that help reduce inflammation and enhance circulation. Both of those abilities make coconut oil an excellent ingredient for under-eye care, because the skin under the eyes is prone to puffiness and dark circles. The skin under the eyes becomes thinner as you age, making the blood vessels more visible, which explains the darkness that you see. Coconut oil works to strengthen the skin barrier, making those blood vessels less prominent. Additionally, coconut oil may help accelerate cell regeneration, leading to a quicker replacement of damaged skin cells with new, healthy ones.

Cucumber

One study found that cucumbers work to soothe the skin and reduce the appearance of swelling. Due to their water content, cucumbers help to replenish dry skin. Some research indicates that cooled cucumbers can help reduce inflammation and offer vasoconstriction to vessels in the eye area. Vasoconstriction helps to drive fluid away from the eye area, which helps reduce the appearance of puffiness and bags.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is highly beneficial for the skin, and is often used around the eyes to help relieve swelling, moisturize dry skin, and relieve redness. It may also help to repair damaged skin and treat sunburned skin. According to research, aloe vera contains nutrients (zinc, magnesium, potassium, and selenium), which offer antioxidant benefits. Antioxidants help repair damaged cells, which works to strengthen the skin and repair damage. Aloe vera also contains enzymes and fatty acids that help reduce inflammation. The amino acids may help reduce puffiness or general redness. Finally, aloe vera offers moisturizing properties that may help reduce irritation and inflammation.

DIY Cooling Cucumber Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 large cucumber, roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unrefined coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
  • 8 drops carrot seed essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
  • Transfer the mixture to an ice cube tray (preferably made of silicone for easy removal) and place in the freezer until frozen.
  • When ready, pop out one cube, apply to the eye area, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. If you added carrot seed essential oil to the face mask, make sure not to get it in your eyes, otherwise they will burn.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your face gently to dry.

There are too many creams to choose from these days! From body butters and facial creams to anti-aging serums and more, it can be hard to find exactly what works for you and your skin. If you are looking to help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, there are some essential ingredients to look out for. By that, we mean that you should seek out certain ingredients and also avoid others.

When you choose an anti-aging cream, the goal is to find ingredients that nourish the skin in many different ways. Ideally, these ingredients should help your skin retain moisture, provide anti-inflammatory properties, and improve overall complexion. Continue reading to learn about some of the featured ingredients in the DIY anti-aging night cream that contribute to more youthful skin.

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil, or rosehip seed oil, is pressed from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant. It contains a wide variety of essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acids, which work to keep cell walls strong so they don’t lose water. If there is one thing to know about beauty, it is that hydration is necessary for soft, supple skin. Rosehip oil also contains vitamin A, which is necessary for collagen production. It also inhibits the creation of MMP-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen. Some research indicates that rosehip oil’s antioxidants help combat visible sun damage, and may potentially prevent photo-aging.

Sweet Almond Oil

As an emollient, sweet almond oil helps soften and smooth the skin, making this oil suitable for those with dry or sensitive skin types. Regular use of sweet almond oil may help reduce inflamed or irritated skin, which is why it is commonly used among people with eczema or psoriasis. According to research, sweet almond oil encourages collagen production, which is essential for skin elasticity. That can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and promote a more overall youthful look.

Lemon Essential Oil

Researchers note that lemon essential oil is one of the top essential oils for reducing wrinkles and other signs of aging. Lemon essential oil reduces the effects of oxidation on the skin, so using it regularly can help fight against premature aging. Environmental pollutants and free radicals damage the skin through oxidation, but the antioxidants in lemon essential oil can help combat this process. Lemon essential oil also helps to remove dead skin cells, a process that contributes to brighter skin. That means that this essential oil may benefit people with dark spots, scars, or hyperpigmentation.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil exhibits strong antibacterial properties that help the body in different ways. The antibacterial properties may help accelerate the recovery from mild burns, skin infections, and other skin ailments. Scientists note that geranium essential oil is a very effective anti-aging agent. Not only does it improve blood circulation, but it also offers impressive antioxidant activity that helps protect the skin from sun damage. It has a calming effect on the nervous system and has the ability to encourage health cell growth in the skin and hair. Some groups, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, may be sensitive to this essential oil and should avoid it.

DIY Anti-Aging Night Cream

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon rosehip oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon cocoa butter wafers (unrefined)
  • 1/2 tablespoon beeswax pellets
  • 1/4 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 25 drops lemon essential oil
  • 12 drops geranium essential oil
  • 5 drops carrot seed essential oil
  • 1/4 cup filtered water

Instructions:

  • Add the sweet almond oil, rosehip oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax pellets to a medium sized glass bowl. Place this bowl on top of a saucepan with a few inches of water to create a makeshift double boiler.
  • Place this over medium heat and stir occasionally until all of the ingredients have fully melted and combined.
  • Remove from heat and pour in the vitamin E oil and essential oils, stirring slowly as you add them in.
  • Either pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer or add it to a mixing bowl. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes to cool.
  • Remove the bowl from the fridge and decide whether you want to use a stand mixer or use an electric hand mixer to whip it until it becomes a thick cream. If using a stand mixer, make sure to use the whisk attachment. Start whisking slowly and then increase the speed.
  • Spoon the mixture into a clean glass jar and apply to the face, preferably at night after you cleanse.

Lemon balm is a relaxing, calming herb loved by bees and humans alike. It is a common ingredient in stress-reducing creams or supplements that aid sleep and rejuvenation. As a relative of the mint family, lemon balm has dense green leaves that emit a fresh lemon aroma. It is a lovely addition to any herb garden and complements other shrubs and flowers. If you have good soil and sunlight, lemon balm will grow easily!

How Does Lemon Balm Benefit The Skin?

Rich in caffeic and ferulic acids, both of which are antioxidants, lemon balm can help neutralize free radicals on the skin. Free radicals, which are commonly created by pollution, are oxidizing agents that cause damage to skin cells. If left unchecked, these free radicals can cause premature aging, including fine lines, dark spots, and wrinkles. Creams or salves that contain lemon balm work to increase circulation, while simultaneously tightening the skin.

Lemon balm exhibits antibacterial properties that work to cleanse pores and reduce the frequency of blackheads. Some anecdotal reports indicate that it may aid healing, being a natural remedy for insect stings, bites, cuts, and small wounds. Lemon balm contains rosmarinic acid, which works to benefit oily skin by reducing oil production. In turn, that effect may help reduce acne breakouts.

What Does The Research Say?

An in-vitro study that used lemon balm oil found it to be very effective against a series of human cancer cell lines. Lemon balm oil exhibits antioxidant activity, evidenced by a reduction of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH). Another study from 2004 found that lemon balm may offer anti-tumor properties, but more research is necessary to determine this.

Lemon balm works to relax the blood vessels and offers antiviral activity. Historically, Greek and Latin cultures used lemon balm to calm nerves and treat fevers. In America, the Cherokee tribe used lemon balm to remedy digestive disorders and mitigate stress. Even today, lemon balm offers therapeutic properties that help soothe wounds, anxiety, acne, eczema, and even chickenpox.

What Is Lemon Balm Oil?

Lemon balm can also be found in oil form, but you can make your own lemon balm oil if you have the time. Please note that lemon balm oil is not the same as lemon balm essential oil, which is made by distilling lemon balm leaves. To make lemon balm oil, you have to crush the leaves and slowly heat them in a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, almond oil, or fractionated coconut oil. This process can take a couple weeks before it is ready to use, and the longer you wait, the better. If you don’t have the time, though, you can buy lemon balm oil for the following DIY salve

DIY Lemon Balm Salve

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon candelilla wax
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp lemon balm oil (not essential oil)

Instructions:

  • Melt the wax with the jojoba oil and olive oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Once the wax is melted, you can stir in the lemon balm oil.
  • Transfer this mixture to a metal storage tin and allow it to cool before placing the lid on. Use as needed, but do not use lemon balm if you have thyroid issues.

There’s nothing wrong with brewing a fresh cup of coffee to get your day started. What if you ground some coffee beans and didn’t pour hot water over them, though? What if you incorporated them into a sugar scrub that helps exfoliate and nurture your skin? The beauty industry recognizes coffee as a beneficial skin care ingredient, and we’ll cover why that is in this article.

Body exfoliation is an essential part of skin care, and a coffee scrub is one of the best products to benefit your skin. Depending on the ingredients you pair coffee grounds with, a coffee scrub will have different benefits. For example, pairing it with jojoba or coconut oils can help infuse the skin with more moisture. Not only does coffee help exfoliate the skin, but it also provides the following benefits.

Reduces Cellulite Appearance

Although coffee doesn’t make cellulite vanish magically, it may diminish the appearance of cellulite on the skin. The caffeine in coffee works to dilate blood vessels under the skin and stimulate blood flow. That works to improve the skin’s appearance, making it look tighter by shrinking those small dimples.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Coffee exhibits a high amount of polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds. According to research, the specific anti-inflammatory effects of coffee are attributed to chlorogenic acid, a compound in coffee. Including coffee in your body scrub, or other skin care products may help reduce redness, breakouts, or flare-ups on acne-prone skin.

Works To Moisturize Skin

Some studies suggest that coffee bean oil contains essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid. These fatty acids are building blocks for ceramides, which enhance your skin’s barrier (the outermost layer). Not only does that help lock in moisture, but it also helps keep out irritants. Research suggests that coffee’s polyphenols work to reduce skin dryness and improve microcirculatory function.

Anti-Aging Properties

Due to the presence of antioxidants and polyphenols, coffee works to fight free radicals to help enhance the overall appearance of skin. One study found that the caffeine in coffee helped reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and wrinkles in middle-aged women. Additional research suggests that coffee exhibits antioxidant activity, thus improving fine lines, wrinkles, and overall appearance of skin.

Protects Against Sun Damage

Can you replace your sunscreen with coffee grounds? Absolutely not, but studies show that the caffeine in coffee helps protect against ultraviolet (UV) damage. Some research notes that coffee may protect against sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer caused by sun damage. Researchers state that caffeine acts similarly to sunscreen and preliminary test-tube studies show it may help kill skin cancer cells.

Bean There, Done That

Was that overly corny? Regardless of your stance on puns, we want to urge you not to throw away your coffee grounds after you finish brewing a hot cup of coffee. Save the coffee grounds and add them to your beauty regimen. As with so many other foods, coffee provides a host of skin care benefits. In fact, it helps reduce the appearance of dark circles under your eyes, which is why coffee extract is a common ingredient in under-eye creams.

Homemade Vanilla Coffee Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 20 drops vanilla essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon coffee grounds

Instructions:

  • Add the sugar, coconut oil, and vanilla essential oil to a medium mixing bowl and stir well.
  • Add in the coffee grounds (fresh or used is fine) and stir well to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into some four-ounce mason jars and store in a cool-dry place. This scrub will last about two to three weeks, so consider giving some of it to a close friend or family member if you don’t think you’ll use it all in time.

It can be difficult to keep track of so many different creams, treatments, masks, salves, and more on the beauty market. Wouldn’t it be nice if you just had a cream that could moisturize the skin, nourish the hair, and even remove makeup? That’s why you are in need of your own Egyptian Magic Cream, which offers multiple beauty benefits in one DIY balm.

The original Egyptian Magic Cream was released in 1991, and it’s been rumored to be the best-kept beauty secret for celebrities. It is 100% natural and may help you unlock more beautiful, healthy skin and hair. Unlike most beauty products, Egyptian Magic Cream is free of additives, parabens, chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances. It contains olive oil, beeswax, honey, bee pollen, royal jelly, bee propolis, and divine love. What are these things and how can they help you? We aim to highlight some of those ingredients before providing you with your own recipe.

Olive Oil

Commonly used in culinary applications, olive oil has many health properties, but it also exhibits beauty benefits. The high concentration of antioxidants helps to fight free radicals on the skin, which helps protect against early signs of aging. Olive oil also contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, and compounds like oleocanthal and squalene, all of which may help repair skin damage. Olive oil is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and non-toxic, making it an excellent carrier oil for topical use.

Beeswax

Beeswax works to soften the skin and enhance skin elasticity, both of which help reduce the signs of aging. According to studies, beeswax exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, germicidal, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make beeswax a highly stable base ingredient, which extends the product’s life. If you have sensitive skin, beeswax is an excellent choice because it will unlikely cause skin irritation.

Bee Propolis

Propolis is widely used in medicine because it exhibits antiseptic properties. In fact, propolis is used in dermatology to treat streptococcal, staphylococcal, and fungal infections. It is highly effective in the treatment of skin burns and it has comparable therapeutic effects to certain over-the-counter burn creams. Propolis also stimulates glycosaminoglycan accumulation, which is necessary tissue growth and wound closure.

Royal Jelly

With a broad spectrum of biological activities, royal jelly has positive effects on the skin. Studies have shown that royal jelly exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-aging properties. The anti-inflammatory activity may help accelerate wound healing and reduce inflammation. Because royal jelly can stimulate metabolism in tissues, it may improve the regenerative processes, which may reduce early signs of aging

DIY Magic Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1.5 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 1/2 tablespoon bee propolis
  • 1/2 tablespoon royal jelly
  • 1 teaspoon bee pollen powder

Instructions:

  • To start, reserve about one to two teaspoons of olive oil and then add the rest to the top of a double boiler. Add the beeswax pastilles to the double boiler as well.
  • Once the beeswax is melted, remove from heat and allow them to cool for about five minutes or so.
  • Pour the olive oil beeswax mixture into a heat-safe glass bowl and mix until it turns into an off-white cream. Make sure to allow the mixture to fully cool before adding the rest of the ingredients, as heat can destroy the enzymes in honey.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the honey, bee propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen powder, and the reserved teaspoons of olive oil. Make sure to whisk well to fully mix the ingredients together.
  • Add the honey mixture to the olive oil mixture and whisk to combine. You can do this by hand because it doesn’t need to fluff up like body butter.
  • Spoon the mixture into glass jars or metal tins and let the mixture harden completely before storing in a cool, dark place.

Beach trips, days at the lake, and backyard barbecues are synonymous with two things: summer and sunburns. If you don’t protect your skin, it can burn within 30 minutes of being out in the sun. And if you’ve suffered a bad sunburn, then you understand how miserable it can be. It is possible that some of your efforts to protect your skin fall through the cracks, and you end up with a sunburn. Fortunately, you can soothe sunburnt skin with the after sun lotion in this article.

We want to be clear and say that this after sun lotion is not a miracle cure. It will not make your sunburn vanish within an hour, nor will it undo the damage done to your skin. It can, however, provide some relief and replenish your skin with moisture. Additionally, this after sun lotion may accelerate your recovery, hydrating your skin in the process. As a quick note, try to stay out of the sun while recovering from a sunburn

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera and sunburns go together like peanut butter and jelly. For thousands of years, different civilizations have used aloe vera to treat various skin conditions, such as burns and minor wounds. Some people refer to aloe vera as the “burn plant” because it is highly effective at soothing burns and sunburns. However, when applying aloe vera topically, it can quickly evaporate from the skin, so you may not absorb all of the medicinal properties. For this reason, it can be beneficial to mix it with something that provides a barrier to lock moisture into the skin. That brings us to the next ingredient.

Shea Butter

A go-to in many DIY beauty recipes, shea butter provides excellent moisturizing properties and other noteworthy benefits. If you have dull or dry skin, shea butter can help it retain moisture by forming a protective layer on the skin’s surface. That ultimately reduces water loss and keeps the skin more supple and hydrated. Shea butter also contains vitamins A and E, both of which contribute to a more youthful appearance. Who doesn’t want that? Lastly, shea butter works to promote cell regeneration, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Coconut Oil

If you apply coconut oil to the skin after some time in the sun, it can provide a cooling feeling and may even relieve sunburn symptoms. The saturated fats in coconut oil are excellent for moisturizing the skin. Plus, dermatologists agree that coconut oil aids every aspect of a sunburn. Not only does it have a soothing feel after application, but it also deeply hydrates the skin to repair damage done by the sun.

Lavender Essential Oil

Great for calming the intensity of a sunburn, lavender essential oil is gentle enough for you to topically apply it with a carrier oil on damaged skin. Because of the linalool and linalyl acetate content, lavender essential oil works to reduce the pain of a severe sunburn. Lavender essential oil also contains antibacterial, carminative, and anti-fungal properties, all of which help to accelerate the healing process of a sunburn.

DIY After Sun Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons organic aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon rosehip oil
  • 30 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  • You will need a stand mixer or a hand mixer to make this recipe.
  • Break up the shea butter into small chunks and place in the mixer. Whip on high for 20 seconds and then stop to scrape down the sides.
  • Add the coconut oil and whip for 20 seconds before stopping to scrape down the sides. Add the aloe vera gel and then whip for another 20 seconds.
  • Repeat this process when you add the rosehip oil and then the lavender essential oil, adding them one at a time and then mixing well. The after sun lotion should be creamy and easy to remove with a silicone spatula.
  • Store in a glass jar in a cool, dry place. Apply to sunburnt skin without being too aggressive. It’s best to apply the lotion after a cold shower.

With so many skin care products on the market today, choosing the right ones can be very difficult. It’s hard to know which ones are synthetic and which ones are natural. Even the “natural” and “chemical-free” products can contain harmful ingredients. Most products have the potential to benefit your skin, but natural, homemade skin care products are often the better choice.

It is very difficult to trust products that have a long list of ingredients, especially if you can’t pronounce them. A product may claim to be “natural” or “organic,” but a lot of greenwashing occurs in the beauty industry. That means a company uses misleading labels and language, environmental imagery, or hidden tradeoffs that makes it seem sustainable and natural. In fact, a product can claim to be natural even if it only has a few natural ingredients. A drop of essential oil can make a product natural. These products may also contain ingredients that are not certified natural or organic.

For those reasons and and more, we encourage people to make their own beauty products when possible. Consider the following reasons to make DIY skin care products. Let us know if you agree or disagree in the comments below. Have you made your own products before? We’d love to hear from you, especially if it was a recipe that we posted!

Natural skin care products are simply better for the environment than synthetic alternatives. Synthetic chemicals can harm animals and plants that they come in contact with. If those synthetic chemicals seep into the ground, they can wreak havoc on surrounding ecosystems. The manufacturing of traditional skin care products can also lead to environmental pollution. Companies need to extract certain ingredients, such as aluminum or lead, in order to make products. DIY skin care products don’t need mining or manufacturing because they use simple, natural ingredients.

You Decide What Goes Into The Products

When you make your own skin care products, you know exactly what goes into them. If a body butter recipe contains shea butter, almond oil, coconut oil, and some essential oils, you know that there are no other fragrances, stabilizers, or chemical additives. Using natural ingredients on the skin helps reduce the risk of common skin reactions that can result from chemicals in skin care products.

Learn What Works For Your Skin

As previously mentioned, store bought skin care products contain a long list of harmful ingredients. That can make it difficult to determine which ingredients are the best for your skin. The great thing about DIY skin care products is that you can customize them with ingredients that your skin needs. Cater to your skin type or skin condition/ailment to boost the overall health of your skin. You can also research which ingredients have the best compounds, vitamins, and other nutrients that benefit your skin type.

Streamline Your Routine

Homemade skin care products contain simple ingredients, but they don’t just serve one purpose. What we mean by this is that a facial lotion can double as a deodorant. Homemade shaving cream may also serve as a post-shower moisturizer. Sometimes, you can even use raw ingredients, like shea butter, on their own to help improve skin barrier function and promote hydration and moisture.

Manufacturing Doesn’t Harm Animals

A lot of big skin care manufacturers continue to test their products on animals. This is a detriment to the wellbeing of animals that receive testing. Fortunately, not all skin care product manufacturers use animal testing, so no harm is done to living beings. These are the more ethical companies that don’t contain a lot of synthetic materials. If you are against inhumane treatment of animals and testing, natural DIY skin care products are the way to go.

They’re Easier On The Skin

Synthetic skin care products are very harmful to certain skin types. Ingredients in those products can cause swelling, redness, rash, itchiness, or a serious allergic reaction. Look out for paragons, sulfates, synthetic dyes, propylene, petrochemicals, triclosan, and more. You don’t have to worry about that when you use DIY skin care products. Natural ingredients don’t contain chemical irritants and instead of being detrimental to the skin, they actually nourish it.

Some people are constantly at war with their skin. Those with dry skin face challenges that others don’t, and it is difficult to find the right products that moisturize and exfoliate gently. The average face wash may cause extra dryness and certain moisturizers may cause excess oil production. Where is the happy medium? Well, it may be the sugar scrub recipe in this article.

Before we continue, it’s important to note that some people do not encourage the use of sugar scrubs on facial skin. Exfoliation does play a key role in cleaning out pores and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, sugar crystals can be too abrasive for people that have sensitive skin, leading to micro tears in the skin. The sugar scrub may have more benefits on other areas of the body.

If you have sensitive skin, you can experiment with this sugar scrub in a small area to see how it affects your skin. If you find that it is too intense for your facial skin, consider experimenting with other exfoliating alternatives that help get rid of dead skin cells. Keep in mind that the scrub in this recipe does have ingredients that work to nourish and moisturize the skin. Read on to learn more about them.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is essentially fat extracted from raw coconuts or dried coconut flakes. As a result, coconut oil has valuable emollient properties that are extremely beneficial for certain sky types, for example, those with dry or dry-to-normal skin. The nourishing fatty acids may help hydrate and protect the skin from environmental threats. These acids include lauric acid, which exhibits antibacterial properties, and linoleic acid, which helps the skin retain moisture. People with dry or flaky skin may have better success moisturizing with coconut oil than traditional moisturizers. Additionally, coconut oil works to reduce inflammation and encourage collagen production, which can help your facial skin maintain firmness and elasticity. One thing to note is that if you have acne prone skin, you may not want to use coconut oil, as it can clog pores and lead to acne development.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can help benefit the skin in myriad ways, and it may even improve symptoms of chronic skin conditions. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in tea tree oil may help to fight acne, or the redness associated with it. One study involved 14 participants with acne and they used tea tree oil with a carrier oil twice per day for 12 weeks. Researchers found that tea tree oil helped reduce the total number of acne lesions. The ability to decrease inflammation may also relieve dryness that results from irritation.

Sugar

Sugar is an excellent exfoliator, but not for every skin type. It works to remove dead skin cells and can help give the skin a natural glow by cleaning out pores. Some studies suggest that the use of sugar scrubs may reduce early signs of aging. Sugar does not allow toxins to attack your skin cells, ultimately slowing down the aging process. Regular granulated sugar tends to work well, but brown sugar may be better for sensitive skin because it is the finest and least abrasive.

Tea Tree Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup sugar (brown or white)
  • 10 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Pour all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix to combine. The mixture should look thick and textured.
  • Spoon the sugar scrub into a glass jar and store in a cool, dry place.
  • To use, massage a small amount into your face using gentle, circular motions. Avoid your hair so that it doesn’t get greasy.
  • Rinse and pat your face dry and marvel at your soft, glowing skin.

This recipe is just like store-bought body lotions, only this one doesn’t contain unnecessary ingredients. Technically, it is more akin to body butter, because it is a thick, moisturizing cream. Whatever name you choose for this recipe, one thing is for certain: it is great for the entire body and all skin types.

There are three primary ingredients in this recipe: shea butter, jojoba oil, and arrowroot flour. The last ingredient helps to make this lotion non-greasy, and also works to rejuvenate and soften the skin. Arrowroot flour is a much healthier version of talcum powder, in case you didn’t know there was an alternative. Keep in mind that you can include or omit essential oils for this recipe. The combination of them will depend on what scent you want to get out of the lotion.

Shea Butter

The great thing about shea butter is that it is safe for all skin types. It is free of chemical irritants that are known to dry out skin and it doesn’t clog pores, which is sometimes the case for coconut oil. Shea butter is typically used for moisturizing because it has a high fatty acid content. It contains stearic, palmitic, linoleic, and oleic acids, all of which are rapidly absorbed into the skin after application. These fatty acids act as “refatting” agents, helping restore the barrier between the skin and the environment. Ultimately, shea butter works to protect your skin and keep it hydrated.

Arrowroot Flour

Arrowroot flour or powder acts as an excellent substitute for talcum powder or cornstarch in cosmetic formulations. In fact, it has a finer texture than cornstarch and doesn’t have the negative connotations associated with cornstarch. Arrowroot also contains beneficial vitamins and minerals, including zinc, iron, vitamin B6, and potassium. Additionally, it has been known to provide relief from a variety of skin irritations, such as skin sores, rashes, acne, and general inflammation. It may improve skin texture and reduce the risk of oiliness, bringing about a natural glow to your complexion

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is deeply hydrating and tends to be much lighter than other oils. Not only does it easily penetrate the skin for optimal absorption, but it also provides an excellent moisturizing effect and healthy glow. Jojoba oil contains chromium, Vitamins E and B, zinc, and copper, all of which nourish the skin. In addition to providing long-lasting moisture and antioxidants, jojoba oil can slow down the appearance of aging. Consistent use may help fade fine lines and wrinkles. Dermatologists explain that jojoba oil may help increase the skin’s suppleness.

Essential Oils

Essential oils exhibit powerful properties that can help benefit the skin in numerous ways. Some offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may reduce inflammatory skin problems and balance the skin’s oils. Others may improve the appearance of fine lines and optimize the skin’s moisture content. The main thing to remember when using essential oils on the skin is that you should always dilute essential oils in carrier oils prior to applying them to the skin.

DIY Non-Greasy Shea Butter Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 1 teaspoon arrowroot flour
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil (optional)
  • 3 drops carrot seed essential oil (optional)
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

  • Melt the shea butter in the top of a double boiler over medium heat. Make sure that there is about an inch or two of water in the bottom and that it is boiling before you put the shea butter in the top part.
  • Stir throughout the melting process and once it is fully melted, remove from heat.
  • Pour the melted shea butter into a heat-safe glass bowl and then add the arrowroot flour and jojoba oil. Stir to combine and then also the mixture time to cool (about five minutes).
  • Place the mixture into the fridge so that it can solidify (about 30 minutes).
  • Once the mixture is opaque and firm, remove it from the fridge and add the essential oils, provided you are using them.
  • Use an electric mixer, hand mixer, or fork to whisk the mixture until it appears whipped. This shouldn’t take very long.
  • Spoon the mixture into a glass jar and label it desired. Store in a cool, dry place for up to six months and use as needed.
