The post 6 Impressive Health Benefits Of Wormwood appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Wormwood sounds like an herb that you would receive from a shaman during a medieval quest. Believe it or not, wormwood is one of the three key ingredients in absinthe, which Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, and Vincent Van Gogh used to drink. Maybe that’s why they were such incredible artists!

What Is Wormwood?

Wormwood, known scientifically as Artemisia absinthium, helps to eliminate intestinal worms, specifically roundworms and pinworms. The plant, which is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, has a bitter taste and has been used for centuries in medicinal applications. Researchers note that wormwood is a perennial herb that exhibits a wide range of health benefits. Continue reading to learn about six of the many impressive health benefits of wormwood.

Aids Digestion

According to historical evidence, wormwood has helped treat flatulence, indigestion, gastritis, and other digestive issues. Wormwood contains bitter compounds that stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, which enhance the absorption of nutrients from the foods you eat. The terpenes in wormwood also stimulate saliva, stomach mucus, and intestinal secretions, all of which may ease digestive symptoms. Wormwood may also reduce stomach acids that contribute to acid reflux and peptic ulcers.

It Exhibits Anti-inflammatory Properties

Wormwood contains artemisinin, a compound that researchers believe to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. A few studies suggest that wormwood may also temper the actions of cytokines, which are proteins that help instigate inflammation. In doing so, wormwood may ease redness, warmth, swelling, and other symptoms of inflammation. Most of the research about wormwood’s anti-inflammatory properties have been focused on people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. A 2016 study monitored people who took 150 milligrams of wormwood extract per day for 12 weeks. The results indicated that they experienced less joint pain than the group that took a placebo.

It Has Antimicrobial and Anti-parasitic Effects:

Wormwood has exhibited potent antimicrobial properties against many pathogens, from bacteria to fungi, and even parasites. Studies show that wormwood is most effective when it comes to eliminating pinworms and roundworms from the body. Other studies found wormwood to be effective against gut parasites like Giardia lamblia and Helicobacter pylori. For these reasons, wormwood may be a promising natural alternative to traditional anti-parasitic medications or drugs.

Enhances Liver Function

Historically, wormwood was used to help support liver function. Wormwood contains compounds that help promote the secretion of bile, aiding in the breakdown of fats and toxins. Reports suggest that regular consumption of wormwood may help detoxify the liver, which helps protect it from free radical damage.

May Fight Cancer Cells

Several studies found that the artemisinin compound in wormwood may fight against iron-enriched breast cancer cells. It actually fights these cancer cells the same way it eliminates malaria-causing parasites. Cancer cells can be rich in iron because they soak it up, which facilitates cell division. A 2012 study tested samples of breast cancer cells and normal breast cells that had been treated to maximize iron content. After that, the cells were treated with a water-soluble form of artemisinin. Results revealed that normal breast cells showed little change. Within 16 hours, however, the cancer cells were dead, with only a few normal cells killed.

May Offer Pain Relief

In the past, wormwood was used in herbal remedies as a pain-reliever. Because it contains analgesic properties, wormwood may alleviate various forms of discomfort, including headaches, menstrual cramps, and muscle pain. Researchers don’t fully understand the mechanisms behind these effects, so more research is necessary.

Precautions

Although wormwood offers a variety of health benefits, it is crucial to exercise caution when using it. Because wormwood contains thujone, a compound that can be toxic if consumed in excessive amounts, there are certain people that should avoid it. Pregnant women, individuals with seizure disorders, and those with liver disease should not consume wormwood. Should you want to incorporate wormwood into your diet, consider speaking with a healthcare professional, especially if you have a health condition or take specific medications.

The post How To Get Rid Of Gas Quickly appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Gas that gets trapped in the intestines can be quite painful. Oftentimes, gas can cause swelling, tightness, sharp pains, cramping, and even bloating. According to several surveys, people pass gas between 13 and 21 times per day. When there is no way for gas to escape, diarrhea or constipation may be to blame. Should you need quick relief, continue reading to learn how to get rid of gas quickly

What Is Gas?

Intestinal gas, which forms in the digestive system, is a mixture of vapors, including carbon dioxide, oxygen, methane, nitrogen, and hydrogen. When these vapors mix with intestinal bacteria, an unpleasant odor develops. Intestinal gas is a fact of life, as it naturally results as the body digests food. The small intestine lacks the enzymes necessary to digest and absorb carbohydrates in sweet, starchy, and fibrous foods. As the undigested food passes into the large intestine, harmless bacteria break down food and form hydrogen and carbon dioxide gasses. Some intestinal bacteria produce methane gas as well. It is this digestive process that causes flatulence.

Burping and flatulating are two ways that the body eliminates gas. Experts say that the average person produces one to four quarts of gas every day. That explains passing gas 13-21 times per day. Some people don’t have an issue with gas, but it can become a problem if it doesn’t go away. If you regularly experience pain because of gas, then something more serious may be going on with your body.

To Get Rid Of Gas And Bloating Take Some Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a safe and effective natural remedy to help relieve bloating and gas. This type of charcoal is safe for human consumption, and it’s often the first thing given after the stomach is pumped in hospitals. After swallowing the charcoal, it works to draw gasses into itself. This helps the body naturally flush out gas and reduce bloating. Additionally, it may help remove any irritants that exist within the digestive tract.

Empty Your Bowels

If you need to go, go. There is no sense in holding it in because you aren’t in the comfort of your own home. Having a bowel movement helps relieve you of gas or stomach discomfort in two ways. It activates the muscles in the large intestine, which encourages the elimination of gas. Additionally a bowel movement empties the rectum of stored stool, freeing up the area to allow trapped gas to escape.

To Get Rid Of Trapped Gas Move Your Body

According to one study, gentle exercise helps to relieve gas pain or bloating. Walking is the easiest form of exercise and you can do it anytime, anywhere. Although it seems simple, walking works to relax the muscles in the abdomen. Upon relaxation, the muscles can help trapped gas escape. Yoga is another accessible and easy option to help get rid of gas quickly. Several poses, including happy baby and child’s pose, may be very effective at moving gas through the intestines.

Apply A Heat Pack

Heat is naturally soothing and experts commonly recommend a heat pack to ease an upset stomach. Many studies confirm that heat naturally relaxes muscles, so applying it to the stomach helps relax the ones in the gut. By relaxing the muscles with a heating pad, hot water bottle, or even hot bath, you help gas escape. If you use a heating pad or hot water bottle, place a towel or clothing item between your bare skin and the heat source. You don’t want to burn your skin!

Try Some Herbal Remedies

One method that may provide quick relief is chewing fennel seeds. These seeds have the ability to relieve intestinal gas, but don’t chew more than one teaspoon. Keep in mind that you may want to choose a different remedy if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is mixed information about the safety of these women eating fennel seeds. You can also drink peppermint and chamomile teas, both of which are carminatives. That means that they calm the stomach and help get rid of gas quickly. If gas results from indigestion, chew on some ginger or drink ginger tea to accelerate metabolism and improve digestion.

The post The Best Ayurvedic Herbs For A Healthy Thyroid appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

The American Thyroid Association estimates that 20 million Americans have a thyroid disorder. Generally speaking, thyroid disorders result from an overproduction or underproduction of thyroid hormones. Standard treatment tends to involve some form of medication to establish a healthy hormonal balance. Some doctors even convince people to remove the thyroid, and they end up taking thyroid hormones for the rest of their lives.

With more and more attention on alternative medicine and treatment options, people have a growing interest in remedying the thyroid without conventional medicine. According to Ayurvedic medicine, many herbs can help create balance in the thyroid. In Ayurveda, the thyroid connects with the increase in kapha dosha and vata in the body. Doshas are essentially biological energies that maintain the body’s mental and physical processes. If the kapha and vata doshas are out of balance in the body, it’s possible to experience thyroid problems.

Since the thyroid regulates and monitors metabolism, heart rate, and other key functions in the body, optimizing thyroid health is paramount to overall health. Failure to balance the thyroid can lead to poor immune function, low energy, mood swings, and extreme weight loss or weight gain. Some of the Ayurvedic herbs (below) complement conventional thyroid treatments. If you don’t understand proper dosage or recommendation for your thyroid condition, consult with your doctor about taking the following herbs.

Guggul

Guggul has a reputation for regulating thyroid function, but it also has positive effects on blood lipids. Guggul’s antioxidant properties work to protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress. This ultimately decreases lipid peroxidation in the liver and increases the liver’s ability to transform thyroxine (T4) into triiodothyronine (T3). One animal study found that guggul has strong thyroid stimulating actions, and may even increase iodine uptake.

Shigru (Moringa)

Known for regulating hormone levels and ensuring optimal thyroid function, moringa is an excellent herb if you suffer from hyperthyroidism. At the same time, hypothyroidism patients also benefit from moringa because it has a rich iodine content. More often than not, iodine deficiency is a primary cause of hypothyroidism. According to several studies, moringa extract exhibits anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. It can help to stimulate metabolism by regulating the production of T3 and T4 hormones. Finally, it may help to inhibit bone damage that results from an overabundance of T4 in the body.

Ashwagandha

If you are familiar with Ayurveda, you know that ashwagandha has a healing reputation. It’s an adaptogenic herb, helping to naturally relieve stress and anxiety, but it also promotes internal balance in the body. In one study, ashwagandha exhibited an ability to increase T3 and T4 levels without significantly increasing iodothyronine 5’-monodeiodinase. In basic terms, ashwagandha was able to increase thyroid function. Other studies found that it helped decrease gluconeogenesis and improve antioxidant activity to protect the thyroid. Ashwagandha also stimulates the endocrine system and works to encourage lipid peroxide levels in the liver.

Piperine

Piperine is the active ingredient in long pepper and black pepper. It is an alkaloid that has been able to reduce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and insulin to almost normal levels. This is great news for people with hyperthyroidism. Piperine’s thyrogenic activity may also help to improve levels of A-1, T3, T4, and iodine. An animal study confirmed that piperine exhibited an ability to alter lipid profiles, hormone levels, and apolipoproteins.

Bauhinia Purpurea

Bauhinia purpurea is a flowering plant that is native to the Indian subcontinent. A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology monitored female mice that received bauhinia purpurea bark extract for 20 days. The conclusion of the study was that the bark extract increased both T3 and T4 concentrations. In human trials, Bauhinia purpurea helped to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, while protecting the thyroid from oxidative stress. It works to enhance antioxidant enzyme secretion, which may help to reverse metformin-induced hypothyroidism.

]]>

Alternative medicine and herbal remedies receive more attention nowadays for the treatment of various bodily disorders. Herbs like stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) offer therapeutic effects, especially for women who aim to balance hormones. It’s an herb that has been a staple ingredient in herbal medicine since ancient times.

Cultures in Asia, Europe, and Africa have used nettle for thousands of years. Some healers created nettle tinctures to remedy lower back pain, while others used it to increase bodily warmth during winter. Fresh nettle causes a stinging reaction upon contact, but cooking or drying the leaves cancels out that stinging effect.

Nettle Is Nutrient Dense

According to several studies, stinging nettle exhibits antioxidant effects in the body. Antioxidants work to protect the cells from oxidative stress, which can increase the risk of cancer, cognitive decline, and early signs of aging. Researchers found that stinging nettle extract works to raise blood antioxidant levels. It’s also rich in calcium, potassium, sodium, iron, beta-carotene, lutein, carotenoids, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and K.

The Use Of Nettle For Women

Many studies concluded that nettle can positively impact female hormones. In general, two substances are necessary for keeping hormone levels check. Nettle works to balance hormones by influencing aromatase and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The former is an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen, while the latter is a protein that the liver makes. SHBG carries three hormones, estrogen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and testosterone, in both men and women. High SHBG levels mean that there is not a lot of testosterone available for bodily tissues. Low levels of SHBG indicate high testosterone levels, which can increase the risk of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), hair loss, depression, and more in women.

Benefits of Nettle For Women

Managing Aromatase and Estradiol

Unlike men, women experience extreme hormonal changes, specifically during menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause. Hormones can change as a result of taking birth control pills as well. Nettle root can help reduce the harmful effects of estrogen metabolites in a woman’s body. By decreasing levels of estrogen metabolites, a woman can reduce the risk of certain cancers, according to several studies. Blocking aromatization, a process sex hormones undergo, it effectively reduces several primary causative factors of hormone-induced breast cancer and uterine cancer.

Encouraging Thyroid Health

Stinging nettle contains iron, and iron deficiency can affect the production of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Without sufficient production of TSH, it’s easier to experience hypothyroidism, which can cause weight gain or make weight loss difficult. The thyroid needs iron and iodine, but iodine often receives more attention when it comes to optimizing thyroid health. The pituitary gland produces TSH, and the thyroid cannot receive the necessary signals for T3 and T4 hormone production if TSH production isn’t optimal. Nettle leaf is a rich source of iron, which is a nutrient that can enhance thyroid function

Relieving PCOS Symptoms

Three primary characteristics of PCOS include irregular menstrual cycles, excess male hormones (testosterone), and cysts in the ovaries. It’s one of the leading causes of infertility in women of childbearing age. Women with PCOS typically have higher levels of testosterone, which causes hormonal imbalance. In a 2014 study, young women received 300-600 milligrams (mg) of dried nettle extract daily for 16 weeks. The results indicated that the women experienced a reduction in testosterone and improvement in menstrual cycles. Additionally, many naturopathic doctors work with nettle to help women with PCOS.

Helping Control Blood Sugar

It’s estimated that about one in nine adult women in the U.S. has diabetes. Various human and animal studies found that nettle has the ability to help lower blood sugar levels. One of nettle’s primary compounds may mimic the effects of insulin. In a three-month study, 46 participants took 500 mg of nettle extract three times daily. The results indicated that everyone experienced lower blood sugar levels. Finally, the antioxidants in nettle may help assist with glucose-lowering activity.
