The post The Top 5 Health Benefits Of Parsnips appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Used in culinary and medicinal applications for many years, parsnips are root vegetables that resemble large, white carrots. Parsnips have a long, tapering shape and are close relatives to carrots and parsley, exhibiting a similar nutritional profile to those vegetables. They are nutrient-dense, offering many antioxidant compounds that aid immune function, digestion, and weight loss efforts.

The antioxidants in parsnips are of great interest to researchers. Antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals, which contribute to oxidative stress. According to various studies, oxidative stress can increase the risk of many chronic and acute conditions that affect the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. It can also contribute to the development of neurodegenerative disease and cancer. Eating more foods that are rich in antioxidants, then, may help protect against these types of health conditions.

That means that you should start eating more parsnips! They are rich in furanocoumarins, flavonoids, and polyacetylenes, which exhibit antifungal, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant properties. Continue reading to learn more about the health benefits of parsnips

Encourages Healthy Bones

Parsnips contain calcium and magnesium, two minerals that are necessary for bone development. One cup of parsnips provides over 45 milligrams (mg) of magnesium, which equates to about 10% of the recommended daily intake. Magnesium plays a role in the structural formation of your bones, making parsnips a great vegetable to include in your bone health diet.

Supports Weight Management

Because parsnips are low in calories and high in fiber, they make for an excellent weight loss food. The reason dietitians say they can support weight management efforts is because they keep you full without filling you up with excess calories. One cup of parsnips provides 100 calories and 6.5 grams (g) of fiber. If you are trying to establish a caloric deficit, include parsnips in your meals to increase feelings of fullness. A review of 62 trials with nearly 4,000 participants found that increased fiber intake helped reduce body weight and waist circumference. That is completely separate from calorie restriction efforts!

Enhances Immune Function

One cup of sliced parsnips provided 22.6 mg of vitamin C, which equates to 25% of the recommended daily intake (RDI). Vitamin C is both an antioxidant and micronutrient that helps to enhance immune function by way of several cellular functions. Parsnips also contain quercetin and kaempferol, two phenolic compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antiviral activity. All of that aids your immune system’s ability to fight off foreign invaders.

May Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer

Researchers note that sufficient fiber intake during your early life (during adolescence and young adulthood) can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer later in life. According to surveys, most Americans do not consume an adequate amount of fiber per day. Incorporating more parsnips into your diet can increase your fiber intake. Beyond the fiber, parsnips provide lots of antioxidants, which help reduce DNA damage that may increase cancer risk later in life.

May Calm The Mind

Both carrots and parsnips contain falcarinol, which works to protect against fungal infections. Researchers note that you lose about 70% of falcarinol during the cooking process, but the remaining 30% is available to cross the blood brain barrier, where it can have an almost sedative-like effect. Falcarinol is serotonergic, which means that it influences serotonin (the feel good chemical) in the brain. Animal studies suggest that falcarinol may improve depression- or anxiety-like symptoms, however, it’s too early to know whether or not it has the same effect in humans.

From soups and salads to sandwiches and beyond, there are endless ways to incorporate turnips into your diet. Not only do turnips provide a distinct, peppery flavor, but they also exhibit impressive health benefits. According to research, turnips may improve gut health, enhance heart function, benefit the immune system, and even aid with cancer prevention. In this article, we detail what you need to know about turnips and why you should get your daily dose.

What Are Turnips?

Turnips are a type of root vegetable grown in temperate climates worldwide. Generally, they have a white skin with a purple or red hue and a bright white flesh. Turnips also have greens, which you can consume in place of other leafy greens like kale or spinach. Just keep in mind that turnip greens have a more pronounced, peppery flavor than other leafy greens. You can eat turnips in their raw form, but you can also pickle, grill, boil, roast, or sauté them. Turnips are low in calories, high in fiber, and provide a host of micronutrients that contribute to better overall health. Continue reading to learn more about their health benefits.

They Promote Regularity

Turnips provide 3.1 grams of fiber per cup, so adding them to your diet can help get things moving, so to speak. Fiber adds bulk to stool as it moves through the digestive tract, helping you avoid constipation. One review compiled results of five studies and found that dietary fiber was able to increase stool frequency in constipated patients. Turnips supply a decent amount of fiber, but consuming them with other fiber-rich foods will benefit digestion and promote regularity.

They Boost Heart Health

One study consisting of almost 135,000 adults revealed that higher intake of vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables like turnips, reduced the risk of death by heart disease. As previously mentioned, turnips contain a lot of fiber, which works to lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Turnips also contain antioxidants that exhibit heart-promoting activity. Cut down your risk of heart disease even more by minimizing stress, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking.

They Enhance Immune Function

One cup of cooked turnips fulfills 20% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C. Increasing your intake of this water-soluble vitamin can help enhance immune function. A new study found that sufficient vitamin C intake can help reduce symptoms and shorten the duration of infections like the common cold. Additionally, increasing vitamin C intake may help prevent or improve outcomes of malaria, pneumonia, and other infections. Don’t just rely on turnips for your vitamin C, though. Consume other vitamin C-rich foods like kiwis, oranges, guavas, bell peppers, and more.

They Aid Weight Loss

Low in calories and rich in fiber, turnips make an excellent addition to any weight loss diet. Fiber moves slowly through the digestive tract, which slows the emptying of your stomach, helping you feel fuller for longer. A human study from 2009 followed 252 women over the course of 20 months. For every one-gram increase of fiber intake, they experienced half a pound of weight loss. The women also experienced a significant reduction in body fat. Another study from 2015 found that eating cruciferous vegetables, such as turnips, was associated with 0.68 pounds of weight loss over four years. Turnips will not solely make the weight fall off. You have to maintain a healthy lifestyle, control your portions, and eat a balanced diet to encourage weight loss.

They May Fight Cancer

Cruciferous vegetables, which include turnips, broccoli, cabbage, kale, and more, are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and cancer-fighting compounds. Glucosinolates and indole-3-carbinol, for example, exhibit anti-cancer properties, with scientific research summarizing their preventative potential towards gastrointestinal cancers. That said, these compounds from cruciferous vegetables undergo modifications in gastrointestinal conditions, which reduces their activity and availability. Researchers have been able to stabilize these compounds in nanoencapsulation methods, so expect to see chemotherapeutic agents derived from cruciferous vegetables in the future.

After these drinks ignite your passion for citrus, you begin to experiment with other flavors and citrus fruits in various recipes. Because citrus straddles the sweet and tart line, you can use citrus fruits in both sweet and savory applications.

As a food category, citrus is very diverse and includes varieties of oranges, limes, lemons, tangerines, grapefruit, pomelo, and yuzu, among others. Oranges rank just below apples, bananas, and melons as the most commonly consumed fruits in the United States. In fact, most people would find it difficult to live without citrus!

Historically, British sailors who attempted voyages without citrus usually developed scurvy, due to lack of vitamin C. Although not the only vitamin C-rich foods, citrus fruits are some of the most popular to enjoy, with one orange containing more than 50 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C. This nutrient functions as an antioxidant and aids immune function, which is vital during cold and flu season. Keep your vitamin C intake up with the following citrus=themed recipes!

Lately, people are incorporating new and exciting wellness trends into their daily routines. From cold plunges and red light therapy to tea baths and mobility exercises, many wellness trends help keep the body as healthy as possible. There has never been a more exciting time to be alive with so many therapies, diet information, and healing modalities at your fingertips.

One such wellness trend is wellness shots, which are intensely flavored drinks that typically contain a lot of vitamin C. Each wellness shot tends to be a variation of lemon, ginger, and turmeric. You can usually see them in certain grocery stores or health food stores, with little two-ounce bottles at a price point of four dollars or more. If you want to save some money and get more bang for your buck, you can easily make these shots at home.

Wellness Shots vs. Lemon Water

A lot of people like to enjoy a glass of water with freshly-squeezed lemon to start their day. In case you don’t do that, doing so can have a positive impact on your health. Some of the health benefits include:

 • Improves immune function
 • Detoxifies the liver
 • Helps energize the body
 • May improve appearance of skin
 • Helps hydrate the body
 • Helps relieve morning sickness

In case you do not drink lemon water and want to try out this trend, start with two cups of water and stir in the juice of half a lemon. After you experiment with this simple creation, you can board the train to the land of wellness shots. They help you start your day with a little kick, energizing your cells and boosting immunity

Morning Wellness Shot Benefits

Although these are not a cure-all tonic, they do exhibit some unique health properties. A wellness shot is essentially a blend of concentrated nutrients. When you pair these wellness shots with a whole food diet and regularly exercise, they may help you combat fatigue and boost energy. It is very common for people to enjoy them during back-to-school times to take action against viruses. Many people get sick during the winter, making that time of year another popular time for wellness shots. Additionally, drinking these wellness shots may help your digestive system if you’re experiencing bloating or gas.

How To Make Your Own Wellness Shots

It is very easy to make these wellness shots, especially if you use a basic recipe. Some recipes don’t even require a juicer! Even if the recipe calls for a juicer, it will only take you five minutes to make. If you like your juice less frothy, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve and discard the pulp. Sometimes, you can get creative and add a few ingredients of your choice, but these recipes are far from complex. Simple ingredients and recipe steps for some healthy concoctions.

The Classic

These two ingredients may also enhance energy levels and boost metabolism. Ginger is rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and helps to improve brain, heart, and immune function.

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 c raw ginger root, washed & chopped
 • 1/2 c freshly squeezed lemon juice
 • 1 pinch ground turmeric
 • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
 • 2 tbsp. raw agave nectar

Instructions:

 • First off, make sure that you don’t peel the ginger root. Add it to a high-speed blender and blend on high until you see fine pieces.
 • Pour the lemon juice, cayenne, turmeric, and agave into the blender and continue blending until you get a cloudy mixture.
 • Stop blending and then pour the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, pushing the pulp against the screen to get the most juice possible.
 • You can save the pulp if you want and add it to a smoothie within 24 hours, as long as you refrigerate the pulp.
 • Store the juice in little shots in the fridge for up to a week, or you can pour the juice in an ice cube tray, freeze, and use whenever you want.

Lemon, Ginger, And Fruit Shot

If you want to make your wellness shot more palatable, then you should start with this before diving straight into turmeric and lemon juice. Plus, adding fruits like pineapple, cherries, berries, or oranges, can increase the antioxidant profile. The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients:

 • 1 lemon, peeled and quartered
 • 1-inch piece of ginger
 • 1/4 of an orange, peeled

Instructions:

 • Process all of the ingredients through a juicer and enjoy within 15 minutes.

Pineapple Ginger Wellness Shot

A great way to keep the immune system in tip top shape is by consuming foods that contain vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties. All of the ingredients in these pineapple ginger wellness shots help to enhance immune function.

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup pineapple, cubed
 • 1 cup filtered water
 • 2 tbsp ginger root, peeled and diced
 • 1/2 lemon, juiced
 • 2 tsp turmeric root
 • Dash of black pepper

Instructions:

 • Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend for about 30 seconds to one minute.
 • Pour the blended mixture through a strainer and into a wide-mouthed container. Make sure to press the pulp to extract as much juice as you can.
 • Store in the fridge and enjoy within 3 days. Ideally, drink a two- or four-ounce shot at once.
 • You can sweeten with a little raw agave nectar if the flavor is too intense for you.

]]>

In late August 2023, hospitalizations due to COVID-19 steadily climbed. The data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that hospital admissions increased by 19% during the week ending August 19, 2023. Compare that to early June of 2023 when the weekly average of positive COVID-19 tests was about four percent. That figure has since tripled to 13.4%, and the region of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico hit a positivity rate of 18%.

Ever since states made masks completely optional, the percentage of people wearing masks outside their home in the U.S. decreased. The percentage went from about 57% in January 2022 to around 27% in January 2023, according to data from Covid States Project. Did vaccines have anything to do with that? It’s not for us to say, especially since vaccinated individuals may not be protected against new subvariants

Infectious disease specialists still argue that masks can provide good protection in several scenarios. Many people don’t want to wear masks for their own reasons, while others continue to wear masks to protect themselves or other high-risk individuals. Wear a mask or don’t wear a mask, and let everyone do what they feel is right for them.

COVID-19 Mask Mandates Reappear

Overall COVID-19 indicators are down from this time last year, but some institutions don’t want to take chances. For example, Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia posted on Instagram that it was restarting the mask mandate because of positive COVID-19 cases among students. Becker Hospital Review found eight hospitals that reintroduced face covering rules. Kaiser Permanente’s Santa Rosa Hospital in California states that masks are required upon entrance and throughout the duration of your visit.

Other institutions that recently reinstated mask policies include Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and Auburn Community Hospital in Auburn, New York. UMass Memorial now requires employees to wear masks when visiting emergency room and cancer patients.

Should You Consider Masking Again?

Infectious disease experts also recommend that you wear masks, or at least take more precautions, in certain situations. Consider wearing a mask in a public space if the following conditions apply to you:

 • Going on a big trip in the very near future
 • Getting married or attending a wedding soon
 • Taking care of someone who is immunocompromised

For people who have a higher risk of severe COVID-19 complications, consider wearing a mask in crowded public spaces. Planes, trains, or enclosed areas with lots of people are breeding grounds for COVID-19. Nobody wants to get COVID-19, so take matters into your own hands and increase protection.

If You Choose To Mask, Wear It Right

If you wear a mask, don’t wear it as a chin diaper. Make sure that you secure the face covering over your nose and mouth to protect yourself from breathing in contaminated droplets. There are many high-quality masks available these days, so get one that fits well. KN95s and surgical masks offer great protection, while NIOSH-approved respirators offer the highest level of protection, according to the CDC. How much protection you need will depend on you and how much you want to stay safe. It’s hard to say what COVID-19 cases will look like in the coming months, but taking precautions may help limit the spread and keep communities safe.

Vitamin D May Affect The Body’s Inflammatory Response https://www.dherbs.com/articles/vitamin-d-may-affect-the-bodys-inflammatory-response/ Sun, 04 Jun 2023 09:27:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=161450

According to a new study, vitamin D may play a role in modulating inflammatory pathways in the body, but more research is still necessary.

The post Vitamin D May Affect The Body’s Inflammatory Response appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available in supplement form. The body also produces it when ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun hit the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Health experts consider it to be the “jack of all trades” of essential vitamins. Why is that? Well, it plays several integral roles in the body, from supporting gut microbiome to enhancing the appearance of the skin.

Even though vitamin D is famous for a number of health benefits, some are not as widely talked about. One such benefit is its ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. While scientific evidence suggests that vitamin D plays roles in modulating inflammatory pathways, the exact relationship between vitamin D and inflammatory response requires more research. Researchers have a long way to go to fully understand this relationship, but new research is very exciting. The reason that researchers believe this is because of an observed inverse association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and C-reactive protein (CRP).

What Is C-Reactive Protein?

CRP is one of the most widely used inflammatory biomarkers in the blood. Researchers can measure CRP levels to help gain a better understanding of the inflammatory process in the body. CRP, especially high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP), is very useful in gauging general inflammatory status in the joints, heart, brain, and entire body.

The reality is that inflammatory pathways and responses are normal physiological occurrences. They occur naturally within the human body and have a healthy balance. Healthy levels of CRP, which is a protein that the liver produces, tend to be associated with balanced inflammatory response. Additionally, healthy CRP levels tend to indicate healthier immune function. Keeping inflammatory pathways in check is an essential component to overall health. Because 25(OH)D levels (the blood marker that researchers use to identify vitamin D sufficiency) influence CRP status, research is ongoing to see vitamin D’s role in regulating inflammatory response in the body. This would help researchers gain insight to how vitamin D supports neurological, gastrointestinal, and immune health.

The Design Of The Study

Researchers analyzed 294,970 unrelated adults of white-British ancestry. All participants in the UK Biobank study were between the ages of 37 and 73. Researchers recorded 25(OH)D and CRP concentrations and they also considered genetic pathways during the study.

How Does Vitamin D Status Influence Inflammatory Response?

The results of the study revealed two primary takeaways, the first being that higher genetically predicted vitamin D serum levels were linked to lower CRP concentrations. The second takeaway was that the effect of vitamin D status on CRP is restricted to the vitamin D deficiency range. What that means is that the body’s CRP status, which indicates whether or not an inflammatory response works effectively or excessively, doesn’t influence vitamin D levels. The real truth is that people with lower vitamin D levels tend to have higher levels of CRP biomarker and a subpar inflammatory response.

The researchers behind the study believe that this is because of vitamin D’s effect on vitamin D receptor-expressing immune cells. These cells include T-cells, B-cells, and monocytes, in addition to other cells. Experiments in cell models found vitamin D in its activated form can inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines and promote the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Now, take into account that 29% of the U.S. adult population is vitamin D deficient. This vitamin holds influence over the body’s inflammatory response, so it would behoove Americans to increase vitamin D levels in the body.

The Takeaway

By reaching and maintaining healthy vitamin D status, which is not easily achieved, you may positively affect the body’s inflammatory response. That said, it isn’t entirely clear how sufficient vitamin D levels can support a number of bodily functions, including inflammatory response. The reality is that you cannot achieve or sustain optimal vitamin D levels through sunshine and diet alone. For this reason, you may require a vitamin D supplement, but please do your research and consult with your healthcare professional to discuss proper dosage.

Mango and carrot may not seem like the perfect couple, but they actually make a delicious pair. Rich in vitamins A & C and fiber, these two ingredients are excellent in smoothies and juices. The great thing about adding them to smoothies, though, is that you get that incredible fiber that you don’t get from a juice. Can you tell we prefer smoothies? Juices have their place in this life, but you can use less ingredients and fill up easier when you drink smoothies.

As you can see from the recipe picture, this smoothie is a vibrant orange. That is because both the carrots and mango contain beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A that acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin A works to encourage healthier eyesight and immune function. Orange fruits and vegetable typically contain other powerful nutrients, including lycopene, flavonoids, potassium, vitamin B6, and fiber. Because of their rich vitamin A content, these foods may lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

While the carrot and mango deserve their stage time, we cannot ignore the other key player in this smoothie: ginger. Ginger may ease nausea and motion sickness by soothing the stomach. The active ingredients in ginger reach parts of the gastrointestinal tract that cause these stomach issues. Additionally, ginger works to boost brain function by increasing serotonin and dopamine levels. The anti-inflammatory nature of ginger gives your immune system a helping hand, especially when trying to find infection, such as the common cold or flu.

People have been searching for ways to boost their immune systems forever. Researchers continue to investigate supplements, nutrients, and diet modifications that can encourage healthy immune function. The good news is that the lack of scientific evidence hasn’t stopped new products from emerging, usually with creative delivery systems.

One of the more recent and popular items for healthier immune function is wellness shots. These are not alcoholic shots, nor are they the kind administered via a needle, just to be clear. These little shots claim to deliver immune-boosting nutrients via one gulp of liquid. They are readily available in grocery stores, health food stores, and juice bars. And because people want quick and efficient ways to make it through cold and flu season unscathed, these little shots are very popular.

What Are Wellness Shots?

These little one- or two-ounce bottles contain a mixture of fruit or vegetable juices, apple cider vinegar, and herbs and spices. Some of the herbs and spices in these wellness shots have been used in traditional and folk medicine for hundreds of years. A 2022 report on the beverage industry found that these beverages have become a preferred way to obtain vitamins, more so than pills or gummies. You can down them quickly, making them more attractive than smoothies or juices.

What Health Claims Do These Shots Make?

Lots of juices are advertised as “immune-boosting” or “germ-fighting,” but how valid are these claims? Like most foods, immunity and wellness shots can be marketed with similar vague health claims. Because they are not subject to the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), wellness shots can use these types of phrases. Marketing language, therefore, is often exaggerated.

A few common phrases that are associated with wellness shots can include “boost immunity” or “strengthen your immune system.” That means that these wellness shots imply that they will help you not get sick, or recover faster if you are already sick. In reality, the immune system is a lot more complicated than that.

According to dietary research, adequate vitamins, minerals, macronutrients, and calories play a role in how your immune system functions. Some nutrients do have more of an impact on the growth and function of immune cells. Getting “mega doses” of those nutrients doesn’t supercharge your immune system, according to health experts. That is because the body can only use a certain percentage of those nutrients.

What Does The Research Say?

Research shows that diet will not prevent you from catching a cold, flu, or COVID-19. That said, there is some evidence that a wellness or immunity shot can help ease cold or flu symptoms if they contain certain nutrients. Research states that both vitamin C and zinc can help shorten the duration of a cold, provided you supplement with them before getting sick. Unfortunately, the dosages of those nutrients that have been studied are not the same as the amount in immunity shots.

Some wellness shots claim to boost energy levels or improve mental clarity, but they don’t define what that means. We need not discount the positive effects of a balanced diet, though. Diet does help improve the way the immune system functions, but it’s not the end-all, be-all. The unfortunate reality is that no food or special diet can prevent all sickness and disease. Too many other factors are out of an individual’s control.

What To Look For In A Wellness Shot

If you want to know if a wellness shot is worth the hype, you have to check the ingredient list. Focus on the first one listed because ingredients are listed by weight. The first ingredient is the bulk of the wellness shot, according to health experts. Researchers note that several ingredients have undergone lots of scientific studies and are great additions to wellness shots. Those ingredients are as follows:

The Takeaway

If you are a healthy individual, wellness shots are not going to harm your routine, unless you’re allergic to the ingredients in the shots. Unfortunately, there is no proof that taking these shots will improve your overall health or shorten the duration of illness. That said, a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables will contribute to vibrant overall health.

The green smoothies keep on coming, and this recipe is no slouch. The flavor profile is refreshing sweet, but you get a little kick from the ginger and zing from the lemon juice. Plus, the creamy homemade almond milk contributes to this smoothie’s lovely consistency. And the date provides just the right amount of sweetness, complementing the natural sugars from the banana and mango.

It’s probably no surprise to learn that kale benefits the immune system. It is, after all, an incredible superfood that exhibits impressive quantities of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. From strengthening your bones to promoting heart health, there’s nothing kale can’t do! In regards to immune health, kale is naturally rich in vitamin C, with one cup of raw kale providing 22% of the recommended daily value (DV). Plus, leafy greens like kale work to reduce inflammatory markers, most of which are associated with illness.

In addition to kale, lemon and ginger are known immune boosters. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties that may boost immune function. It also exhibits antiviral and antibacterial activity that work to keep the body health. Just like kale, lemon offers a lot of vitamin C, which may improve skin and immune health. Finally, studies indicate that lemon may reduce the complications from a cold or flu, helping reduce inflammation in the body.
