  • Classic (non-exertional) heat stroke: This type of heat stroke affects vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses. It usually occurs after prolonged exposure to high temperatures in poorly ventilated areas during heat waves. You do not need to physically exert yourself to develop this type of heat stroke. 
  • Exertional heat stroke: This type of heat stroke affects healthy, active individuals, especially military personnel, laborers, and athletes. They perform intense physical activity in hot and humid conditions, and heat stroke can progress rapidly. 

Once the body’s core temperature rises, all of the innate processes that are in place to regulate core temperature break down. That creates serious, life-threatening problems, such as loss of consciousness or organ damage. If the heat index is higher than 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, the number of deaths caused by heat illness increases. Do your best to stay cool and prevent heat-related illness and heat stroke with the following tips. 

Avoid Sugary Drinks, Caffeine, And Alcohol

Hydration is the goal when the weather is hot, so there is no sense in drinking beverages that dehydrate the body. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine because they dehydrate the body by increasing urination and expediting electrolyte loss. Consuming too much sugar can also lead to inflammation, which makes heat stroke even worse. Sports drinks are marketed to keep you hydrated during physical activity, but many of them contain excess sugar and added chemicals. Opt for a natural electrolyte drink instead, such as unsweetened coconut water, mineral water, and even pickle juice. 

Check Your Medications

There are many medications that can increase the risk of heat stroke. The reason for this is because they affect how the body reacts to the heat, or they interfere with your salt and water balance. Some medications that can alter the body’s ability to deal with hotter temperatures are:

Kraft Heinz, a food manufacturing giant, will remove all artificial dyes from its brands in 2027. This comes in response to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s scrutiny on synthetic dyes. It was only a couple months ago that U.S. Health officials urged food manufacturers to phase out petroleum-based artificial colors in the nation’s food supply. Now, it seems that food makers are moving in the right direction. 

Kraft Heinz is the maker of Heinz ketchup, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Jell-O, Capri-Sun, and other brands. Kraft Heinz made a recent claim that almost 90% of its U.S. products are currently free of food, drug, and cosmetic colors. Pedro Navio, Kraft Heinz’s North America president, stated, “The vast majority of our products use natural or no colors, and we’ve been on a journey to reduce our use of (artificial) colors across the remainder of our portfolio.” The products that still contain dyes will be removed by the end of 2027. It should be noted that the company removed artificial colors from Kraft Mac & Cheese in 2016.

A Step In The Right Direction

The call for the removal of artificial dyes from food products is not recent news. Many studies have cited that these dyes can cause neurobehavioral problems, such as hyperactivity and attention issues, in some children. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has maintained that the approved list of dyes are safe and that the total evidence indicates that most children have no adverse effects after consuming foods that contain them. 

Currently, the FDA allows 36 food color additives, including eight synthetic dyes. In January of this year, the agency announced that Red No. 3 would be banned in food by 2027 because it caused cancer in laboratory tests. Red No. 3 is common in foods such as cakes, candies, and even some medications. 

The unfortunate reality is that artificial dyes are widely used in U.S. foods. Europe and Canada require synthetic colors to carry warning labels, so they mostly use natural substitutes. California and West Virginia, however, have already passed laws that restrict the use of artificial colors in foods. And U.S. food manufacturers are already reformulating their foods. Instead of synthetic dyes, food makers can use natural hues made from algae, beets, and crushed insects and pigments from radishes, red cabbage, and purple sweet potatoes. 

More Companies Will Follow Suit

After Kraft Heinz’s announcement, General Mills soon followed suit. General Mills makes cereals such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Trix, Cheerios, and other brands like Pillsbury, Yoplait, and Nature Valley. It announced that it planned to remove certified colors from all of its U.S. cereals and K-12 foods by summer 2026, and out of all products by 2027. General Mills also issued a statement saying that 85% of its retail products do not contain these artificial colors. 

The transition to use healthier alternatives to synthetic food dyes is partially to retain customers. According to Kraft Heinz, both Lunchables and Capri-Sun have fallen out of favor with customers who want healthier food options. The company’s sales dropped 6.4% last quarter. Just last month, the company claimed to be evaluating strategic changes and potential transactions. Lastly, Kraft Heinz recently sold off Planters and its U.S. cheese business in order to simplify its business. Analysts believe that that announcement is a signal that the company may unload other brands or seek to merge with a rival.

How does the body get to these stages, though? Well, the body regulates core temperature to maintain a constant of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the hottest and coldest climates. When the mechanisms that regulate core temperature break down, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur. If you want to prevent this from happening and avoid heat exhaustion this summer, make sure to keep the following tips in mind. 

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Avoid heat-related illness by limiting your exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day. The sun tends to be at its hottest during midday, so make sure to find shade or remain inside during those times. If you are outside, take additional measures to protect the skin by applying sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher. 

Drink Water

When you are in the sun, it is natural to sweat because that is the body’s way of regulating core temperature. The body loses water and other minerals via sweat, though, meaning that you need to replenish that water by drinking lots of it. If you enjoy electrolyte powders, you can incorporate them into your hydration efforts as well; just don’t go for sugary electrolyte beverages. When you focus on sugary, sweetened drinks, or beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine, you work to dehydrate the body. Additionally, the FDA recently announced that decongestant meds that contain phenylephrine are not effective. That’s why you may want to experiment with one of the following remedies before resorting to OTC decongestants. 

Stay Hydrated

One of the best ways to battle congestion is to stay well hydrated. Increasing your water intake helps to keep mucus thin, making it less likely to clog up your nasal passages. Just make sure that you stick to water or low-calorie drinks, such as herbal tea or seltzer water. Remember that hot drinks can also soothe a sore throat, which commonly accompanies a stuffy nose. Avoid milk, soda, coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol while stuffed up because they can increase mucus buildup. Freshly squeezed fruit juice or smoothies can also aid your hydration efforts. Lastly, lemon water does not hydrate you better than regular water, but if it helps you drink more water then drink it.

Use A Humidifier Or Vaporizer

Humidifiers and vaporizers add moisture to the air in the space where you put them. Health experts note that these devices can be especially beneficial to have in your room while you sleep, especially in colder months when the air is usually drier. A humidifier releases a fine mist into the air, whereas a vaporizer boils water to release steam into the air. When you use a humidifier, aim to use filtered or distilled water and clean the device weekly to avoid buildup. A diffuser can also be beneficial because you can use essential oils that help promote decongestion. Tea tree oil, peppermint essential oil, and eucalyptus essential oil can all help clear your sinuses.

Nasal Irrigation

This is exactly what it sounds like: irrigating your nasal passages. You use a saline solution with a neti pot or nasal irrigation device. A lot of people enjoy this method because it is highly effective at getting rid of mucus buildup. Nasal irrigation works to thin mucus and decrease inflammation, in addition to washing away irritants and allergens in the nostrils. There are a few steps to keep in mind when using these devices, such as:

  • Do not use tap water because it can contain microorganisms that can increase the risk of sinus infection. Use distilled or previously boiled water in place of tap water.
  • Make sure to follow the instructions carefully in order to avoid incorrect usage. Wash your hands before using it as well. 
  • If you develop a fever, headache, or vomiting after using a nasal irrigation device, stop right away and speak to your healthcare professional. These symptoms may indicate infection. 

Steam Inhalation

How does this differ from using a humidifier or vaporizer? Well, inhaling steam from heated water can help moisten the nasal passages and offer short-term relief from congestion. The flu, much like a wildfire, spreads very easily. All it needs is a little bit of wind, right? How Does The Flu Spread?

The flu is a viral respiratory illness that primarily spreads via close contact with an infected person. Infected flu patients expel germ-filled droplets when they cough, sneeze, or talk. When those droplets land in the mouth or nose of another person, that person is at risk of becoming infected. The droplets can also land on surfaces, such as doorknobs, TV remotes, or keyboards, which a healthy person can touch and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose, thereby causing infection. 

You cannot always avoid these droplets when you are around someone with the flu. You can, however, take cautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following tips to avoid spreading the flu:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw that tissues away
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated (especially high-touch surfaces)
  • Avoid close contact with sick people, and limit contact with others when you are sick
  • Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever subsides
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth as much as possible
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water

How Long Does The Flu Last?

Infected with the flu? Well, it can last a few days or a couple weeks. More often than not, people who decided to get a flu shot will get over infection quicker than people who did not get vaccinated. Flu symptoms, such as body aches, fever, or chills, typically come on quickly and subside slowly. According to health experts, the average time between exposure to the virus and the appearance of symptoms is two days. 

Statistically, days two through four are the worst, regarding severity of symptoms. You will know that you are nearing the end of your flu when your fever is down and you no longer feel body aches. At that point, the virus is controlled, but coughing, runny nose, and fatigue can stick around for a little while after that. You may even experience some flu dizziness that can last for a couple days or weeks, depending on the cause. 

How Long Is The Flu Contagious?

Typically, you are most contagious during the first three days of sickness, according to the CDC. That said, you are likely contagious for a day before the onset of symptoms and several more once they subside. That means an infected person can spread the flu one day before they experience symptoms. You can spread it and not know it, especially if you did not know that the person you encountered was infected with the flu.

You are the most contagious when your symptoms peak, which is days two through four. It’s possible that you can continue to spread the virus until symptoms go away completely, though. Basically, you are no longer contagious once your symptoms are gone entirely. You can expedite your recovery through various alternative remedies or over-the-counter (OTC) flu medications. What Is Calamine Lotion?

Calamine lotion is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that is meant to soothe mild itchiness (pruritus). You can also use calamine lotion to help dry out oozing skin irritations. Calamine lotion is only for topical use, so please do not swallow it, as it can be very dangerous. 

What Is Calamine Lotion Used For?

The primary benefit of calamine lotion is that it relieves itchiness. Poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and other poisonous plants can cause skin irritation and rash. Applying calamine lotion to relieve the itch from these poisonous plants, in addition to other discomforts, can soothe the skin and aid recovery. You can also calamine lotion to help relieve the following:

  • Heat rash: A heat rash is an area of the skin that becomes irritated when sweat gets trapped in your pores and ducts under the skin. Calamine may help relieve the burning or itchiness. 
  • Chickenpox: You may be able to relieve the itchiness and other symptoms of this infectious condition by applying calamine lotion. The lotion may also prevent you from developing additional skin conditions. 
  • Swimmer’s itch: Calamine lotion may help get rid of rashes like swimmer’s itch, which you can develop if you swim in water that contains certain parasites. 
  • Scabies: A small mite can cause scabies, which can cause a rash and intense itching. In order to ease the itching from scabies, try to apply calamine lotion to relieve symptoms. Unfortunately, it will not kill the mites. 
  • Shingles: In addition to antiviral medications, you may be able to use calamine lotion to help relieve shingles. Apply the lotion directly to the skin in order to get some relief.
  • Acne: Unfortunately, calamine lotion will not cure acne, but it may help dry out a pimple, making it a potential spot treatment
  • Chigger bites: Chiggers are mites that feed on human skin and their bites cause intense irritation and scratching. Apply the calamine lotion to help relieve itching, but it will not kill the mites.

Homemade Calamine Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon pink kaolin clay
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon glycerin

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a glass bowl and whisk with a silicone whisk or wooden spoon. Don’t use anything metal or it will affect bentonite clay’s health properties. 
  • Once you have thoroughly mixed the ingredients, transfer the mixture to a clean jar and screw on the lid. 
  • Store in the refrigerator and use within two weeks. Apply liberally as needed for sunburns, poison ivy, or itchy bug bites.
