There is never a bad time to boost the immune system. Whether you are worried about the new coronavirus variant, seasonal allergies, or a cold circulating the office, there are myriad ways to strengthen immune response. Where do you turn for immune support, though? There are supplements, diets, specific foods, and therapies that offer support, but the herbs in this article show a lot of promise.

As it turns out, Mother Nature herself can be very beneficial in your quest to enhance immune function. Many wellness experts support the idea of using specific herbs and plants to fight off pathogens, allergens, bacteria, and viruses. These things may not be the cure-all solution you want, but studies confirm their ability to improve immunity. Read on to learn about three herbs that give you immune support throughout the year.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is known for promoting liver detoxification, but how does that aid immune function? Well, the liver is responsible for purifying blood and removing toxins from the body, but it also has to break down histamine, which milk thistle can help with. In fact, people used milk thistle seed extract for centuries to treat hepatic conditions by protecting intact liver cells. Having a healthy liver can help you improve immune response. Several studies found that milk thistle has immunomodulatory effects. The silymarin in milk thistle stimulates the immune system, but it also acts as a suppressive to an overactive immune system. This is extremely beneficial if you deal with chronic inflammation and inflammatory conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma. More human studies could help scientists determine if milk thistle benefits the immune system, and overall health, in other ways.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a favorite superfood for many reasons. It may help to boost memory, reduce inflammation, and optimize immune function. Researchers attribute turmeric’s health properties to the active compound curcumin, which exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, all of which support the immune system. One study found that curcumin supplementation may work to lower levels of several acute-phase proteins. These proteins occur when the immune system is in a state of hyper-activation, which can damage your health. The chronic activation of these proteins can suppress the body’s natural antiviral defenses. Curcumin works to normalize certain parts of the immune system that become overactive, helping to keep the immune system functioning optimally and normally.

Stinging Nettle

It stings the body in just the right way! Even though nettle is annoying for gardeners and an enemy to bare skin, it does exhibit powerful health benefits. Well, it has a long history of supporting upper-respiratory health and anti-inflammatory pathways. The leaves of this notorious spring green, just like milk thistle, may support liver detoxification. Several studies also identified that nettle can increase both red and white blood cell counts, an ability that contributes to optimal immune function. One animal study found that nettle was an immune response modulator, stimulating the proliferation of T lymphocytes in vitro. These T-cells are powerful white blood cells that play an integral role in adaptive immune response. More human research is necessary, but preliminary research suggests that it is a great herb to support a healthy immune system.

These herbs may be the unsung heroes of year-round immune support. As is customary with taking any new supplement or herb, consult your doctor to see if these herbs are right for you. As we’ve discussed in this article, these herbs help to support upper-respiratory health, promote anti-inflammatory pathways, and nourish the liver. Enhance their efforts by maintaining a healthy diet, getting sufficient sleep, and exercising regularly.

]]>

As one of the leading causes of chronic liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects about 20 to 40 percent of American population. Even though this condition is quite common, most people don’t realize that they have fatty liver disease because they often minimal or no symptoms. The only way to discover it is to have testing done, e.g. an ultrasound or CT scan.

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

There is a strong link between fatty liver disease and other pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or obesity. There are two types of fatty liver disease: non-alcoholic and alcoholic. Both are often associated with fatigue or slight pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen. Fatty liver disease is the result of extra fat that has accumulated in the liver. While it is normal for the liver to contain some fat, a person with fat buildup of 5 to 15 percent of the liver’s total weight is considered to have fatty liver disease. The amount of fat in the liver will determine the severity of the disease and whether or not someone experiences symptoms.

Non-alcoholic Vs. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Whether someone consumes alcohol or not, fat can slowly start to build up in the liver. The only difference between non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver disease is that the buildup of fat in the liver in a non-alcoholic case is not the result of alcohol consumption. How the fat accumulates, however, is not dissimilar to how fat accumulates in alcoholic fatty liver disease. The regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol is directly linked to increased fat buildup in the liver.

There are currently two primary categories for naturally remedying fatty liver disease: pharmaceutical therapies and lifestyle interventions (e.g. physical exercise, dietary modification, and weight reduction). Recent studies have emerged about the benefits of lifestyle interventions for people with fatty liver disease. Five great dietary tips are listed below.

Foods To Avoid

There are certain foods you should avoid when trying to improve the health of your liver. Alcohol is the number one thing you should avoid, especially if you have alcoholic fatty liver disease. It is integral to avoid excess caffeine, packaged foods, refined sugars, artificial ingredients, refined grains, uncooked shellfish, certain medications, or fruits/vegetables that are sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. The National Institute of Health also provides a database, which details whether or not any medication, supplement, food or herb may be linked to improper liver function.

Milk Thistle

Within the past ten years, researchers have published over 10,000 papers on the anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive, and antioxidant effects of silybin and silymarin, derivatives of the milk thistle plant. Consumption of milk thistle has also been linked to the production of enzymes, which help the liver eliminate toxins. Additionally, the antioxidant effects of milk thistle may reduce oxidative stress and modulate metabolic pathways.

Foods That Boost Liver Function

It is wise to consume lots of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, primarily because many of these foods work to boost liver health. Many liver-boosting foods have been known to decrease inflammation, while aiding the body with insulin production, a common problem for those with fatty liver disease. Great foods to boost your liver include artichokes, bitter leafy greens (mustard greens, arugula, & dandelion greens), green tea, avocados, flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, and foods that are rich in vitamin E.

Cleanse Your Body

Sometimes you need to hit the reset button, especially when you consider that we are frequently exposed to toxins, pollutants, and harmful chemicals that can damage the human body. Exposure to industrial chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, and certain medications can impair liver function and contribute to fatty liver disease. You can try the Dherbs Full Body Cleanse and then follow it up with our 10-day Liver Cleanse to address the condition.

Garlic

The use of garlic as an herbal remedy dates back 6,000 years to various civilizations in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Egypt. Recent studies, however, have found that raw garlic works to improve insulin resistance, lipid metabolism, and helps to fight oxidative stress. The enzymes in garlic may even possess liver regenerative abilities, but more research needs to be done on that matter. As for now, garlic is a beneficial food to include in your diet if you suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The human body contains an amazing network of systems and organs, each of which has a unique function. Everything in the body is linked and that’s how we stay alive, but our health can decline if organs or systems are not functioning properly. All of the body’s systems need to work efficiently to ensure the natural elimination of toxins. Given that the average person’s toxin exposure has exponentially increased, it is integral for the body’s detoxification systems to be operating at peak efficiency.

What Does The Liver Do?

According to ancient Chinese medicine, a physician who can harmonize the liver has the knowledge to treat one hundred diseases. As one of the hardest working organs in the body, the liver converts nutrients from the foods we eat for the body to use. When the body metabolizes fat, protein, and carbohydrates, the liver helps to stabilize blood glucose levels in order to avoid blood sugar imbalances or metabolic problems. It also helps to filter out toxins from the environment and the foods we eat, working to clear the blood of impurities. Additionally, it helps to store blood, regulate blood supply, and break down damaged blood cells for elimination.

This is all to say that the body’s ability to naturally detox is greatly affected if the liver isn’t functioning properly. When the body is flooded with toxins, one can experience chronic inflammation that further impairs the liver’s ability to do its job. To avoid toxic build-up in the body, it is recommended to limit your exposure to toxins (from the environment and food) and support liver health. Use the following herbs to promote a healthier liver.

Licorice Root

Licorice root has been used in Eastern medicine for centuries to aid with healthy liver function. According to a small study, consuming licorice root helps to increase the body’s production of interferon, which is a protein that is released to combat viruses. Licorice root also promotes the liver’s ability to naturally eliminate toxins.

Sulfuric Vegetables

While these are not considered herbs, sulfuric vegetables like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, and mushrooms contain glutathione. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that helps to destroy free radicals in the body. Adding these vegetables to your diet can activate phase one and two of liver detoxification. Eat your greens like your mother told you!

Milk Thistle

Probably the most well-known herb for supporting the liver, milk thistle is rich in silymarin, which is a compound that protects liver cells from damage. Silymarin does this by repairing liver cells that have been damaged by toxin absorption. Milk thistle has also been used as a natural remedy for hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease.

Dandelion Tea

B vitamins are essential to fuel methylation, the body’s biochemical “superhighway” that is responsible its detoxing abilities. Dandelions are rich in B vitamins, so it is beneficial for the liver to drink a cup of dandelion tea. While all parts of the dandelion plant can promote liver health, it is the dandelion root that is best. Note that dandelion can be a soft diuretic, so be careful not to take too much.

Simply put, the health of your entire body is dependent upon the health of your liver. That is because the liver is in charge of synthesizing vitamins, minerals, and sugars (for energy), cleansing and detoxifying the blood, and controlling cholesterol levels. If the liver does not function properly, there’s a great chance that there will be an imbalance in at least one area of your body.

That is why looking after the health of your liver is crucial. And while this requires maintaining a healthy diet, as well as exercising regularly, there are certain herbs out there that can naturally provide an extra boost to your liver.

Dandelion

This bitter herbs has healing properties that benefit a variety of health issues, including liver malfunction. Dandelion can help detoxify the liver while promoting an increase in bile production. In many countries, this herb is used as a liver tonic to stimulate a sluggish or congested liver. There is also some indication that dandelion may boost the production of natural “‘good” bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Green Tea

In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea has many uses, including the protection against liver disease. It contains antioxidants called catechins, which might help prevent hepatitis C, assist liver function, and protect the organ from the damaging effects of toxic substances such as alcohol.

Milk Thistle

This flowering herb is often used as a natural treatment for liver problems, including cirrhosis and hepatitis. The active ingredient in milk thistle, silymarin, acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production, and scientists believe it can have a detoxifying effect on the liver.

Chicory Root

One of the most popular uses of chicory root, dating back to the Roman Empire, is liver purification. Not only can this herb help increase the production of bile, it also contains detoxifying properties, which can cleanse the liver. Furthermore, the dried root can be a healthy coffee substitute, as well as helping to reduce the acidifying effects of coffee in the liver.

Turmeric

Consuming turmeric can help prevent high cholesterol levels in the blood and reduce the risk of fatty liver disease by regulating the enzymes responsible for cholesterol metabolism. Additionally, it can boost antioxidant defenses and help detoxify the liver.

Problems with certain organs in the human body can often dictate the quality of a person’s life; the liver is one of these organs. Make sure to not only try some of these herbs out, but also combine the use of them with a proper diet and regular exercise.

]]>

October is National Breast Cancer Month and we want you all to know that there are natural ways to fight breast cancer. Last year we had several articles about how to perform a self-checkup, and why thermography is better than mammograms. This year we want to give you some information about Fibroadenomas, which not every woman may know about.

What Are Fibroadenomas?

Discovering a lump on your breast can be a terrifying experience. Thoughts of breast cancer start circulating and you break out in a panic. Not all lumps or tumors are necessarily cancerous, though. A common type of noncancerous (benign) tumor is known as a fibroadenoma. Even though fibroadenomas are not life threatening, they may still require some sort of treatment. They are most commonly found in young women and tend to shrink or disappear with no treatment, especially after menopause. Usually 1-2 centimeters in size, they don’t tend to cause pain; rather, one can feel like a small marble under the skin.

What Causes Fibroadenomas?

The exact cause of fibroadenomas is uncertain, but health professionals believe that hormones such as estrogen may play a role in the development and growth. Other professionals attribute the development of fibroadenomas in young women under the age of 20 to oral contraceptives, as they can alter the hormonal balance. Some other causes are listed below:

 • During pregnancy
 • Oral contraceptives (taken before age 20)
 • Certain foods (such as stimulants)
 • Hormonal imbalance

Characteristics Of Fibroadenomas

 • Easily moved
 • Firm or rubbery
 • Round and with smooth borders
 • Painless

Natural Remedies

 • Since some experts believe that certain stimulants like coffee, soft drinks, tea, or chocolate may lead to the development of fibroadenomas, it may be beneficial to avoid these foods. There is no scientific evidence to support the fact that avoiding these foods may decrease breast symptoms, but you may want to experiment if you have food sensitivities.
 • Related to diet, it is beneficial to avoid meat, as most commercial meats contain added hormones that can alter the hormonal balance in a woman. Try switching to a more plant-based lifestyle, where the focus is on organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains.
 • Iodine deficiency may play a role in fibroadenoma development. When the body is low in iodine, breast tissue can become more sensitive to estrogen, thus causing fibroadenoma growth. Try eating iodine-rich foods like cranberries, bananas, prunes, green beans, strawberries, or sea vegetables like kelp, dulse, or alaria.
 • Since too much estrogen can lead to the growth of fibroadenomas, it may be beneficial to perform a liver detox to rid the body of excess androgens and estrogens. You can also take a natural B-vitamin complex supplement because it has antioxidants that work to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce excess androgens in the adrenal glands.
 • Some herbs are beneficial for regulating hormones in the body. Try experimenting with milk thistle, evening primrose oil, false unicorn root, or paeonia to help regulate hormones.
 • Stress or sleep deprivation can affect fibroadenomas in a negative way, which is why it is paramount to keep stress levels down. To help naturally lower stress, you may want to try participating in stress-relieving techniques such as yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, deep breathing, or acupuncture. Acupuncture can be especially helpful because it helps to improve circulation and establish healthy chi within the body.

Herbs can have a direct impact on the way you feel. Whether you are using herbs to boost your immune system, improve sleep, or combat a cold, herbs work to naturally improve your overall health. Some herbs have even been dubbed “superherbs.” Much like superfoods, superherbs aren’t typically found in your average grocery store. They aren’t usually fresh; rather, you have to get them dried or in powder form. Browse your local health food store to locate some of these!

Super Herbs: 5 Essential Medicinal Herbs

Echinacea

Echinacea is an extremely powerful immune-boosting herb. It contains antimicrobial properties and phenol compounds. It is a flower that:

 • Has been used to get rid of malaria, scarlet fever, and common colds and flus.
 • Sip on some Echinacea tea to soothe your sore throat or cough.

Turmeric

Turmeric? 2meric? However you say it, this anti-inflammatory herb is commonly used in Indian food. It’s what makes the food orange…and delicious! One a more serious note, turmeric helps to:

 • Well, it’s pretty damn good for everything.
 • Decreases swelling, improves circulation, and helps digestion.
 • The curcumin, the active ingredient, works to boost your brain health.

Valerian

Who has taken a sleeping pill to fall asleep? Now you can leave those behind because you know about Valerian. You know how Popeye ate spinach to supercharge? Think of this as the opposite. It powers you down for improved sleep. It’s awesome for people with insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Ginkgo Biloba

Did you know Ginkgo Biloba is considered a living fossil? It’s like eating a dinosaur! Okay, maybe not a dinosaur, but it does:

 • Help to improve memory, circulation, and boosts energy.
 • It’s like a natural pick-me-up without the caffeine crash.
 • Can we let you in on a secret? It can get you going in the bedroom too.

Milk Thistle

Doesn’t this sound like something from ancient times? Well, it actually is! Since the days of pharaohs when cattle roamed… Just kidding. But really, though, it has been used for 2,000 years to treat kidney, gall bladder, and liver problems.

 • It cleanses the liver of toxins, and can help you wean off antibiotics or medication.
 • It also can stop cancer cells from dividing and multiplying. Pretty cool, right?

]]>

Having an unhealthy colon is anything butt a joke. Ahhh…there’s nothing like starting an article off with a great pun. Anyways, the colon, also known as the large intestine, is the last portion of the digestive tract. Many of the body’s organs and systems are connected to the colon, meaning that an unhealthy colon can trigger inflammation, diseases, or problems in other areas of the body.

What Does The Colon Do?

When food particles reach the colon, most of the nutrient absorption has already happened. The colon’s job is to absorb residual nutrients, salts, and water and compact the rest of the waste into fecal matter. This is then eliminated via bowel movements. You can actually look to your stools to gauge how your digestive system is functioning.

The average American can carry up to 20 pounds of waste in his or her digestive tract. The last thing you want is built up bacteria in the colon. This can lead to gas, constipation, cravings, abdominal strain, chronic inflammation, fatigue, or a hormonal imbalance.

You can help to improve the health of your colon by eating the right foods. We have some of the best foods that contribute to a healthy colon. Start incorporating them into your diet and let us know how they work for you.

Turmeric

The active ingredient, curcumin, in turmeric has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which fight inflammation in the colon. When you consume turmeric, it works to clean out carcinogens before they damage your cell DNA. Always try to purchase fresh turmeric root because fresh is best!

Flaxseeds

Did you know that flaxseeds contain two types of dietary fiber? Roughly 20-40% is made up of soluble fiber and the other 60-80% is made up of insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber works to slow digestion and increase consistency of contents in the intestine. All of that helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Now, insoluble fiber allows water to bind to stools, increasing their bulk and resulting in softer excrement. This helps prevent constipation.

Garlic & Onions

Containing sulfides, which work to remove carcinogens and cause apoptosis in cancer cells, garlic and onions are beneficial to consume for a healthy colon. According to a recent study, women who consumed one or two cloves of garlic per week were 32% less likely to develop colon cancer compared to those who didn’t eat garlic. Imagine what would happen if you ate garlic and onions almost every day!

Fermented Vegetables

Fermented vegetables help to break down the foods and the undigested waste, which may be trapped in the intestinal walls. The enzymes in fermented vegetables, cultured sauerkraut in particular, help the body absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat more efficiently. Because fermented vegetables are natural probiotics, they work to improve the overall digestive process.

Milk Thistle Seed

Commonly used as a liver cleansing herb, milk thistle can also benefit the digestive system. It helps to stimulate digestive enzymes and break down fats in the foods you eat. Milk thistle can sometimes have a soft laxative effect, especially if you eat a diet that is rich in fat.

These foods are amazing for keeping your colon healthy, but they aren’t the only ones. Eating a lot of cruciferous vegetables (kale, spinach, chard, or collards), fresh fruit, legumes, sprouts, and nuts and seeds can also help to maintain healthy digestion. Let us know how you feel about these foods in the comments below.

Poison

The word “intoxicate” means to poison or be affected by a drug or alcohol where physical and mental control is greatly compromised.

A name describes the purpose, function, and activity of something. An intoxicant is a poison. Wine, like other spirits, is a poison. Poison has no place in the human body because it impairs good health and eventually kills or destroys life.

The etymological root of the word intoxicant tells us that wine, an intoxicant, is a poison. Many people drink wine on a weekly basis and will proudly tell you that drinking a glass of wine makes them feel good. Others will tell you that drinking wine is good or healthy for them. A person who consumes alcohol on a regular basis may tell you this in order to justify the habit of drinking alcohol.

Some people have told me that their doctor told them that drinking wine is good for the heart. If wine is poisonous, then how can it be beneficial to the heart? The heart actually had to work harder and faster to speed up the flow of blood, causing toxemia and high blood pressure. Toxins can lodge in the heart area for a substantial amount of time and possibly kill the person.

The human heart requires clean, unadulterated blood.

Dangers

Wine desensitizes you, causing you to forget about your worries and woes. It dulls your senses and lets you escape from your normal thoughts.

Ironically, drinking wine or other intoxicants can often make matters worse. Overconsumption of alcohol can result in dangerous and life-threatening situations. Dulling your mind down can’t or won’t help you to solve a problem.

You must be in your right, natural state of mind to successfully tackle a challenge.

Rather than being under the influence of their own minds, drunk or inebriated people are under the influence of alcohol.

Many arguments are caused by overconsumption of alcohol. It makes us shout and talk loud in a boisterous manner. Many college women are raped weekly due to an overconsumption of alcohol.

Pathologies

Consuming too much wine can cause many pathologies. Its harmful effects include:

 • Pollutes the blood.
 • Toxifies the liver, and causes the eyes to become bloodshot red.
 • Corrodes the kidneys and bladder due to its high acidity.
 • Causes chemical dependency and many neurological disorders.
 • Increases the chance of yeast infections in women.
 • Destroys the pancreas gland and is implicated in pancreatic cancer.
 • Impairs liver function and causes a host of hepatic diseases, mainly cirrhosis of the liver.
 • The chemicals found in wine corrode the brain cells and greatly impair cognition and memory, as well as impair mental coordination.
 • Implicated in female infertility and frigidity.
 • Causes birth defects in unborn babies.
 • Plays a pivotal role in male impotence.

European Wine

Some wine addicts who love drinking wine and do not want to give it up, simply start drinking European wine from Italy or France due to the health benefits surrounding the French Paradox of wine drinking. The French eat high amounts of dairy products but don’t have the high incidence of heart disease associated with consuming large amounts of dairy products, mainly cheese, like Americans do.

The French drink a lot of wine that is pressed with the grape seeds intact, unlike American wine, which is not pressed with grape seeds and has strong antioxidant capabilities. The French say that moderate wine consumption appears to slow down low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol oxidation and inhibit the blood’s tendency to clot.

Grape seeds are a powerful source of antioxidants but it is still not a good enough reason to dink wine. Taking grape seed extract is a healthier way to enjoy the health benefits of grape seeds.

Labeling

In America, the most popular legalized drugs include, but are not limited to, sugar, salt, cigarettes, coffee, and alcohol. People who drink wine, beer, and spirits don’t mind that the ingredients are not even listed or printed on the bottle or can, much less the process by which they are manufactured.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires labeling of ingredients on all consumable products such as food, beverages and medicine. When it comes to alcohol and cigarettes, there are exceptions to the rule.

Recognizing the tax potential of alcoholic beverages, Congress delegated the regulation of alcohol to the Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The TTB regulates the labels of all alcoholic products. The labeling rules differ between wine, beer and distilled spirits.

 • For distilled spirits, the percent of alcohol must appear on the label. For wine, the rules depend on the percent of alcohol.
 • Wines that contain 7 to 14 percent alcohol are required to list the amount of alcohol.
 • Wines that contain less than 7 percent alcohol are under Food and Drug Administration regulation, not TTB. Nutrition Fact labels with calories, nutrients, and actual ingredients are required. However, they are not required to disclose percent alcohol.
 • Substances that may cause sensitivity to people must be labeled. Includes sulfites and yellow No.5.

Natural Solutions
