Whether you are young or old, it’s easy to get into the Halloween spirit. It is fun and exciting to dress up and embrace all things scary, but this day is really all about the candy. A child loves the opportunity to walk door-to-door in costume and retrieve candy from those eager enough to pass it out. Adults will walk by a bowl of candy in the office, sneakily grabbing a couple every now and again. Parents may even take some select treats out of the Halloween night’s big haul!

A good bag full of treats is hard to resist. Although the various candies can taste amazing, they often come with a cost: dental problems. A new report found that 35% of Americans have experienced candy-related dental issues. Dentists encourage people to make smarter choices when it comes to which candy they choose to enjoy. Daily or frequent consumption of candy will result in negative consequences for the teeth. According to that new report, the following dental issues may be caused by candy.

Tooth Pain

If candy causes damage to your teeth, fillings, or crowns, you can experience general tooth pain. If you bite into some candy and crack your tooth, it can be extremely painful. A cracked tooth that cracks all the way to the root or nerve can be excruciating and typically requires immediate dental work.

Chipped Or Cracked Tooth

Not all chips or cracks go all the way down to the tooth’s root. Some people easily chip their teeth on lollipops or other hard candies and don’t fix the chip for months! It is very difficult to chip a tooth and not notice! That said, you can chip part of a tooth while eating and not notice it because it may not hurt. If you don’t address the problem and don’t see a dentist soon after chipping or cracking a tooth, you run the risk of nerve exposure or infection. A cracked tooth loses the outer layer, the enamel, and a cavity can progress at a quicker rate.

Jaw Discomfort

When you chew hard or sticky candies, you put unnecessary stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). These are the two joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. If you repeatedly chew hard or sticky candies, you may lead to TMJ pain. Plus, hyperextending for opening the jaw wide to eat larger candies can increase general jaw discomfort.

Teeth Sensitivity

Bacteria in the mouth can metabolize into simple carbohydrates (sugar) and lower the overall pH in the mouth. An acidic environment can erode the enamel on your teeth, which makes them more sensitive to tooth decay. Even if the bacteria doesn’t metabolize into sugar, it can cause sensitivity to other areas without enamel. Your teeth “feel” via tiny tubules in the dentin layer of the mouth. These tubules have fluid in them, and that fluid can expand or contract in response to cold or hot liquids, sweets, or other food items. People with gum recession are typically more susceptible to tooth sensitivity.

Gum Infection

Although the report didn’t mention gum infection as a dental issue caused by candy consumption, it is a possible outcome. Little pieces of candy can get trapped between the teeth in the gums or in gum pockets, where floss cannot reach and remove the candy. If candy remains wedged under the gums or between the teeth, you can experience cavities or a periodontal abscess, which is a localized gum infection.

Damaged Fillings Or Crowns

If you eat sticky candy and you have a filling or crown, you run the risk of pulling out a piece of the filling or crown. If the candy does pull out the filling or crown, the sugar from candy can become trapped in the tooth, which can lead to tooth decay. Candy doesn’t directly harm filling or crown material in that way because decay develops differently. Candy typically infects the tooth at the margin of the filling or crown (where the tooth meets the crown or filling).

Having a bright, white smile only seems to matter as you get older. As a child, how often did you spend caring for your teeth and gums? What happens is that you end up making up for neglecting your teeth at an early age. While the most notable signs of aging are wrinkles around the eyes or fine lines on the forehead, your smile has the most dramatic changes as you age.

It may come as a surprise to you, but your pearly whites are the first things that start to show signs of aging. Yes, even before you notice smile lines or thinning hair! You use your mouth daily, from speaking and chewing to smiling and expressing. It sucks the life force out of your face when it comes to aging. That said, an aging smile is much more than a few discolored teeth or a couple lip lines. Tooth stains are visible, but you may not notice that your enamel weakens as you age. Additionally, it’s possible to have microfractures or chipping. For functional and aesthetic appearances, you want to keep your smile as healthy as possible as you get older. How do you do that? Follow the dentist-supported tips below.

Keep Up With Oral Hygiene

This is not groundbreaking news, but prioritizing oral hygiene can lead to stronger, healthier, whiter teeth down the road. A healthy smile is the ticket to a beautiful smile. What that means is that you should brush your teeth twice a day with an ultrasonic toothbrush for optimal cleaning. Flossing, tongue scraping, using a gentle mouthwash, and staying hydrated are habits that maintain a healthy oral microbiome. All of these oral hygiene practices help maintain whiter teeth. By strengthening the tooth’s natural enamel, you can help eliminate buff stains and prevent them from developing in the first place. Stronger teeth and gums means a healthier, shinier smile.

A quick note about mouthwash is that you don’t want to use it all the time. Traditional antiseptic mouthwash is antibacterial by nature, but that means they can wash away the healthy bacteria that inhabit your mouth. Just like your gut, your oral microbiome requires a balance of good and bad bacteria. For that reason, don’t frequently rinse with antiseptic mouthwashes. You can use them infrequently, or rinse with non-antiseptic mouthwashes more regularly.

Invest In A Mouthguard

One of the most common signs of an aging smile is gum recession. Gum lines can creep higher up on the teeth than they should, and this happens with general wear and tear. Some people are more prone to gum recession based on genetics, while others can cause gum recession from teeth grinding or brushing too vigorously. If you are not prone to genetic gum recession, you can engage in certain habits that help you avoid it. If you grind your teeth, especially during your sleep, a mouthguard can be very beneficial. Additionally, consider brushing with a soft toothbrush, and try not to brush too hard. Be careful when you brush because you don’t want to push up on the gum tissue.

Don’t Brush Right After Eating

Let’s say you eat a meal with a lot of garlic or onion. The first thing you want to do, especially if you plan on leaving the house, is to brush your teeth. You may even brush your teeth after drinking coffee to reduce coffee stains. Staining foods and beverages tend to be quite acidic, so brushing immediately after eating or drinking rubs that acidic material all over your teeth. Instead of brushing, rinse your mouth with plain water to help prevent staining.

Halloween has either been canceled, restricted, or modified in recent years as a result of COVID-19. Parties, events, and the classic trick-or-treating are now back in full swing, and people can’t wait to get their spooky on. Whether you visit pumpkin patches or walk home with a giant bucket of candy after trick-or-treating with the kids, you can easily veer off the healthy path.

Chances are, you aren’t getting apple slices with almond butter in place of chocolate bars and sour candies. And most people just buy candy to have in the house or the office now, so these treats are more accessible than ever. The Halloween aisle at grocery stores is almost too tempting, and it can be hard to resist if you or your child has a sweet tooth. Now, candy shouldn’t be off limits; rather, it should be a treat that you enjoy in a mindful way. Sit down, put the sweet on the plate, and take your time to eat and enjoy it. When you stuff your face with candy, you overload the body with sugar and you don’t really enjoy the eating process. The following tips, however, can help you make this trick-or-treating season a little healthier

Not All Sugars Are Created Equal

Added sugars are much different from natural sugars that exist in whole foods. Food manufacturers will add sugars to foods, even the ones that are not particularly sweet. Added sugars help to satisfy your taste buds and keep you coming back for more. Honey, brown or white sugar, and high fructose corn syrup are examples of unnatural sugars in processed foods. Natural sugars occur in whole foods like fruit, and they are beneficial for your health. If you don’t have pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, you don’t have to worry about natural sugars in whole foods. As for added sugars, you should limit your intake to less than 10% of your daily calories. That is the American Heart Association’s recommendation for maintaining a healthy body.

Take A Break From The Sauce

Although trick-or-treating may not be a thing for adults, the Halloween fun doesn’t stop when you reach adolescence. Many adults live for Halloween and the many festivities that are spooky-themed. For many adults, though, Halloween events and parties typically involve a lot of alcoholic beverages. Oftentimes, there is a cauldron of alcoholic punch or Halloween-inspired cocktails that entice you based on looks alone. Excessive drinking can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes, which can cause dehydration and fatigue. Alcohol is also a source of empty calories, so all that drinking contributes to weight gain. Plus, most Halloween-themed cocktails are high in sugar, which can wreck your gut and make hangovers worse. Take a break from the sauce or limit your consumption, making water or sparkling waters your replacement beverages.

Get Creative With Scary-Themed Healthy Foods

You can gain a lot of inspiration for art projects and recipes on Pinterest, especially for Halloween decor and recipes. There are many snacks and treats that are both spooky and healthy because they are made from whole foods with natural sugars. You can always transform healthy fruits and vegetables in a way that satisfies your sweet tooth. Take some time to whip up your own festive foods for Halloween parties by clicking here

Beware Of Overeating Sugar

It’s one of the easiest things to do, especially for children after coming home with a large amount of candy on Halloween. In the interest of health, limit yourself and your children from gorging on candy after trick-or-treating. Beware of getting tricked into a sugar rush! When you eat too many high-sugar foods, you increase the risk of obesity and weight gain, both of which are precursors to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Even if a sugar rush isn’t part of your daily life, one day of unusually high sugar intake can cause a short-term spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. This can lead to increased cravings, mood swings, dips in energy, and acute inflammation. If you or your children struggle with pacing your sugar intake, opt for treats that take longer to eat, for example, lollipops.

Protect Your Teeth By Avoiding Certain Candies

Sugary snacks are loaded with preservatives, added sugars, and artificial colors and flavors that can ruin your blood sugar levels and your teeth. Eating a lot of candy in one sitting can make your next trip to the dentist more like a horror flick than a regular checkup. Sour candy is one of the major culprits when it comes to tooth decay. The highly acidic nature of these candies makes it easy for them to erode tooth enamel. Try to limit your consumption of gummy candies and sour candies because these can cause serious tooth problems. Plus, they can be very difficult to get out of your teeth, even if you floss and brush thoroughly.

We all know that we should floss, but seldom do we see that vision through. Most people even lie about how much they floss to their dentists when they ask, “How often do you floss?” There is no point in lying because the dentist looks inside the mouth, only to see mild plaque build-up that may not be there if you floss regularly.

As much as dentists harp on flossing, are there really benefits to this oral care activity? The American Dental Association (ADA) says that interdental cleaners like floss play an integral role in removing bacteria, plaque, and other debris from areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. That’s why most dentists encourage people to floss daily, in addition to brushing. Flossing helps you dig out a lingering piece of popcorn, steak, celery, or carrot chunk. The relief is amazing and you may not get that food piece unstuck with a toothbrush. Aside from getting food out of your teeth and helping your gums feel great, flossing can also lead to the following benefits.

May Prevent Gum Disease

Plaque doesn’t just stain your teeth or make them look unsightly. Plaque build-up in the mouth can increase the risk of gum disease, which refers to inflammation and infection of the gums. Failure to remove this plaque can cause it to eat away at gum tissue, the primary indicator of periodontal disease. Periodontitis is the advanced form of periodontal disease, and that can result in root canals or extreme tooth decay. An effective way to combat these gum diseases is by flossing on a regular basis because it can help remove bacteria from the base of the teeth

May Benefit Your Heart Health

How can flossing your teeth help your heart? Well, a large body of research supports the link between oral health and heart health. As wild as this theory seems, it is actually quite valid. A 2010 review found a strong link between gum disease and heart disease. That doesn’t necessarily mean that gum disease causes heart disease; rather, researchers believe that people who take better care of their teeth most likely take care of their overall health. A 2020 study followed over 160,000 people who kept a strict oral hygiene routine for over 10 years. The results indicated that these participants experienced a decreased risk of heart problems like heart failure and irregular heartbeat.

Reduce The Risk Of Cavities

Tooth decay can result in cavities, which cause tiny openings or holes in the hard surface of the teeth, also known as enamel. The more plaque on your enamel, the higher risk you are for developing cavities. When you floss at least once per day, you can get rid of hidden food particles and plaque build-up, both of which increase the risk of tooth decay. The toothbrush can’t always reach every part of your teeth, especially between them, which is why the ADA encourages daily flossing.

Helps With Bad Breath

Forget that breath mint and bust out the floss before your big date! A 2013 research review found that you may be able to kick halitosis to the curb by flossing on a regular basis. Even if you brush regularly, bacteria can build up between your teeth. In addition to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, you can experience serious odors if you don’t get rid of bacterial build-up between the teeth. An interdental brush and the occasional use of a tongue scraper can also help keep bad breath at bay.

Get Rid Of Plaque

As we’ve mentioned throughout this article, the removal of plaque can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. It can be difficult to see plaque at first because it is a stick, colorless film that collects around and between the teeth and along the gum lining. The combination of starchy and sugary foods and drinks is a recipe for plaque formation. Bacteria release acids that break down carbohydrates and failure to brush and floss means that plaque can accumulate more easily. If too much plaque builds up, it can harden and turn into tartar, which collects along the gum line. That increases the risk of gum disease!

Oil pulling is often associated with Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system from India. It is an ancient practice that works to remove bacteria from the mouth and promote oral hygiene. Studies suggest that oil pulling not only can improve dental health, but it may also reduce the risk of certain oral diseases.

How oil pulling works is not entirely clear. The claim is that it “pulls” bacteria from the mouth by way of moisturizing the gums and increasing saliva production. Several studies indicate that various types of oil contain properties that help reduce bacteria and inflammation. Additionally, a select number of oils, with coconut oil nearly topping the list, may promote oral health. It’s a practice that many people use to aid oral detoxification, and we’ll cover how that happens below.

May Prevent Cavities

As one of the most common problems of tooth decay, cavities result from poor oral hygiene and bacterial build-up in the mouth. It’s also possible for plaque, which coats the teeth, to cause cavities. Bacteria break down the food particles and they form an acid that ruins tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. Oil pulling may reduce the bacterial presence in your mouth, which may prevent cavities and tooth decay. Some research found that oil pulling may decrease the number of harmful bacterial strains found in plaque and saliva.

May Kill Harmful Bacteria In The Mouth

Bacteria in the mouth can be both harmful and beneficial, given that there are 700 types of bacteria in the mouth at any given moment. One study that lasted two weeks monitored children who either used a standard mouthwash, or did oil pulling with sesame oil for 10 minutes daily. Both the mouthwash and oil pulling groups significantly reduced the amount of harmful bacteria in saliva and plaque. A more recent study confirmed that oil pulling with coconut oil had a similar effect.

May Improve Gum Health

The bacteria that exists in plaque, in addition to causing tooth decay, can also cause gingivitis. Bacteria inflames the gums, making them red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. According to some studies, however, oil pulling is a safe and effective remedy to improve gum health and reduce gum inflammation. Certain oils like coconut oil exhibit anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation in the mouth. A 30-day study monitored 60 participants with gingivitis who began oil pulling. After one week of oil pulling, the participants reduced the amount of plaque and showed an improvement in gum health.

May Reduce Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, affects about one in four people globally. Some of the most common causes for bad breath include gum disease, poor oral hygiene, poor gut health, or tongue coating (bacteria trapped on the tongue). One study found that oil pulling was as effective as chlorhexidine, a chemical in antiseptic mouthwash, at reducing bad breath. In that study, oil pulling with sesame oil significantly decreased levels of microorganisms that contributed to bad breath.

Homemade Oil Pulling Tablets

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unrefined, virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Melt the coconut oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. You can also do this in the top of a double boiler if you prefer to use that method.
  • Get a silicone candy mold and place it on a baking sheet. The size of the molds can vary depending on your preference. You can also fill the molds all the way or halfway.
  • Pour the coconut oil into the candy molds and then transfer the sheet with the molds to the refrigerator. Remove from the fridge once the coconut oil is firm.
  • Pop the hardened coconut oil from the molds and store in a glass container in the refrigerator.

Nobody enjoys going to the dentist. People don’t want to sit back in reclining chairs while another person shoves mirrors, drills, suction tubes, or metal picks in their mouths, all the while being asked about their days. We can only make sounds or shake our heads, dentists! Above all else, the news that people don’t want to hear is that they have cavities because their teeth are unhealthy. That’s why reminieralization is such a trending topic in the oral health world.

Let’s Talk About Tooth Health

There’s no denying that brushing and flossing are essential oral care practices to keep your teeth as healthy as possible. One aspect of oral health that is often neglected is diet. While your dentist will tell you to brush and floss to avoid cavities and tooth decay, he or she may not suggest foods that encourage healthy teeth. It is optimal to eat alkaline foods to promote a higher pH environment in the mouth. So many people drink sugary beverages and eat candy or processed foods, which raise acidity levels and strip away enamel as a result. A healthy mouth will have adequate saliva, which deposits minerals on the teeth and remineralizes them in the process.

Brushing Tip: Brush at a 45-degree angle around the gum of each tooth. This is where bacteria like to hide and cause plaque build up and tooth decay. This helps to focus the brushing on the bottom of the teeth and inside the gums.

How Does Remineralizing Toothpaste Work?

As we previously mentioned, diet makes a difference in the health of your teeth, which means that what you put on your teeth also influences them. Most toothpastes contain fluoride, glycerin, or sodium lauryl sulfate, which is the compound that causes foaming when you brush. These ingredients can create a more acidic environment and compromise the health of your teeth. Remineralizing toothpastes use ingredients that supply the teeth with alkalizing minerals that strengthen them. When you start brushing with the toothpaste (below), you should notice a difference in how your teeth feel. Try it and let us know!

DIY Remineralizing Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • ¾ cup calcium powder
  • 1/3 cup xylitol
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 48 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Place the coconut oil in a heat-safe glass bowl and melt in the microwave.
  • Stir the rest of the ingredients into the coconut oil and mix until everything is well combined.
  • Pour the toothpaste into a glass storage jar and brush with a small amount twice daily.

The biggest meal of the year has come and gone and there’s no better way to follow this day than to floss your little heart out. That’s right, people, we are telling you this because November 29th is National Flossing Day. We know it isn’t as exciting as National Prank Your Friend Day, or National Leave Work Early Day, but the reality is that flossing on a regular basis has some pretty amazing benefits.

Let’s be honest for a quick second: nobody really wants to floss. Flossing is an oral hygiene routine that is typically done reluctantly. Statistically, the average person lies about how much they floss when they go in for a dental checkup, despite the fact that the American Dental Association recommends flossing once a day for optimal oral health. Dental floss gets into the nooks and crannies that the bristles of your toothbrush cannot reach.

National Flossing Day was established in 2019 to remind people of the importance of flossing, because taking care of your teeth and gums is part of life. Not to mention, a great oral hygiene routine decreases your risk of gum disease or gingivitis, and lessens the chance of you needing expensive veneers in the future. For more reasons why you should be flossing, read about the benefits below.

Flossing Reduces Bad Breath

If you have chronic bad breath, also known as halitosis, chewing gum or popping mints all day will not remedy the problem. The smell is always there, and it may be attributed to tartar build-up, which has an unpleasant aroma. Brushing your teeth helps to reduce tartar build-up on the teeth, but flossing removes it from between the teeth and gums. Start flossing at least once a day to help freshen your breath.

Flossing Can Help Prevent Gum Disease

When plaque builds up on or between your teeth, people can develop cavities, but too much plaque can increase the risk of periodontal disease or gum disease. Periodontal disease is an infectious process that can alter the entire structure of the mouth. All you need to do is floss regularly to get rid of the bacteria between your teeth.

Flossing Prevents Gingivitis

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health conditions, resulting in inflamed gums that are extremely sensitive. In some cases, people with gingivitis experience bleeding gums. One of the easiest ways to decrease your risk of gingivitis is by flossing, which works to remove bacteria around the gum line.

Flossing Helps Control Diabetes

This one is a shocking benefit, but diabetes and flossing are in fact connected. Failure to floss regularly can lead to a faster accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. As it turns out, research has shown that oral bacteria can affect glucose levels in the blood, creating a problem for people with diabetes. In order to help stabilize blood glucose levels, floss at least once a day to remove oral bacteria from between your teeth.

]]>

Did you know that the cranberry is one of only three commercially cultivated fruits native to North America? Cranberries are versatile ingredients that deserve much more attention than the little bowl they’re placed in on your Thanksgiving table. Considered to be a superfood because of the antioxidant and high nutrient content, cranberries may help to decrease blood pressure, improve immune function, inhibit certain cancer cells, and reduce the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI). They have also been used as natural dyes and many Native Americans used cranberries to draw out toxins from arrow wounds.

Believe it or not, you can make a lot of different dishes with cranberries. Since they are in season during the fall, you should opt for fresh cranberries instead of canned varieties, which contain preservatives, chemicals, and excess sugar. Additionally, most commercial cranberry juices contain obscene amounts of sugars, natural flavors, and dyes. If you want to get creative with your fresh cranberries, you can make a cranberry jalapeno salsa, cranberry mint chutney, cranberry oatmeal, fresh cranberry carrot juice, cranberry tea, cranberry smoothie, cranberry vinegar, or a cranberry chipotle slaw.

In this article, we will detail the health benefits of cranberries, highlighting their nutrients and how you can incorporate them into your diet.

Packed With Antioxidants

Cranberries have more phenols (based on fresh weight) than produce items like strawberries, red grapes, or spinach. These awesome phytochemicals help to protect you from cardiovascular diseases like blood clotting, heart attacks, or atherosclerosis. Consuming cranberries can be very beneficial for your cognitive health as well. Boost your brainpower!

They Fight Viruses

A recent study in Taiwan found that regularly consuming cranberries helps to fight the herpes simplex-2 virus (HSV-2), which can cause genital warts and ulcers. This virus can also cause inflammation in the brain. Additional studies found that cranberries helped to inhibit the growth of intestinal viruses.

They Slow Cancer Progression

A 2016 review of 34 preclinical studies found that the compounds in cranberries worked to inhibit cancer cell growth in test tubes. The antioxidant compounds helped to reduce inflammation, slow cancer cell growth, and trigger cancer cell death. While testing on humans with cancer is limited, these preliminary findings show promising results to the future of cancer treatment and management.

They Improve Cardiovascular Health

Preliminary studies suggest that cranberries may help to improve artery flexibility, which translates to improved blood flow and circulation. Taking the pressure off the heart helps to reduce blood pressure, but improved circulation also boosts cognitive function and increases energy levels. A 2019 review found that cranberry supplementation may manage several risk factors of cardiovascular disease, including systolic blood pressure. Additionally, this review found that cranberries may improve levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol.

They Are Super PACs

When people think of cranberries and health, they typically think of a urinary tract infection (UTI). PACs are why you think of this. What are PACs? Proanthocyanidins, which prevent adhesion of bacteria to the urinary wall, are compounds that work to alter the makeup of disease-causing bacteria, preventing them from binding to human cells and developing into an infection. Only cranberries and blueberries contain PACs that have this anti-adhesion effect. They also work to inhibit bacteria in stomach ulcers, acid reflux, and kidney or bladder infections.

They Enhance Oral Health

NDM is a compound that has been shown to prevent, and sometimes reverse, oral bacteria associated with plaque and periodontal disease. The PACs in cranberries may also prevent bacteria from binding to the teeth, helping to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

How To Consume Cranberries

The fall months will have freshly harvested cranberries in grocery stores and farmer’s markets. If you don’t use them right away, they can be frozen for up to two months and consumed at that later date. This applies for fresh cranberries, but you need to beware of the added sweeteners, preservatives, and chemicals in dried cranberries or cranberry juices. Here are some tips for consuming cranberries:

  • Add a handful of fresh cranberries to a fruit and vegetable smoothie.
  • Include fresh cranberries in a dessert for a slightly tart flavor.
  • Saute cranberries with other ingredients like orange zest, orange juice, and maple syrup to make fresh cranberry sauce.
  • Add dried cranberries (free of preservatives and added sugars) to salads or homemade trail mix recipes.

Maintaining fresh oral hygiene should be of importance to everyone. We know some people are resistant to flossing, but keeping your mouth clean and healthy can protect you from gum disease, plaque, gingivitis, and tooth decay. While brushing and flossing are important, gargling with mouthwash can act as a secondary measure to keep your teeth healthy.

Commercial mouthwashes have tons of chemicals, which aren’t good for your teeth. Believe it or not, making your own mouthwash with turmeric is one of the best things you can do for your teeth. Because turmeric is filled with antimicrobial and antiviral properties, it works to remove plaque or any bacteria in your mouth.

Using turmeric mouthwash can help to naturally whiten your teeth and prevent plaque from accumulating. Additionally, turmeric can help to protect people from gingivitis and may be a great natural remedy for bad breath. To make the recipe, see the instructions below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon organic turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil (optional, but adds flavor)

Instructions:

  • Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan and then add the turmeric and cloves. After adding these spices, remove from the heat and let the mixture infuse for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth into a glass jar, and then add the essential oil.
  • Take a swig of the mixture and swish it around in your mouth for about 1 minute. Spit it out. Do not swallow this!
  • Keep this fresh by storing it in an airtight jar in the fridge.
