Bottled electrolyte drinks typically contain high amounts of sugar and other ingredients that are impossible to pronounce. If you can’t pronounce it, it’s probably not beneficial for the body. The fact remains that people love sugary drinks that promise increased hydration. Excess sugar consumption can increase the risk of high blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. One bottle of these sugary electrolyte drinks can contain 40 grams of sugar (or somewhere close to that number).

Electrolytes are minerals that use electric charges in the body to generate reactions, including nerve movement, heartbeat, and muscle contractions. Calcium and other electrolytes also have other functions in the body. Lemons help to provide the body with more potassium, magnesium, calcium, and a trace amount of sodium. Similarly, oranges offer a lot of potassium. In fact, one study found that freshly squeezed orange juice hydrated the body better than other beverages.

Mix the fresh lemon juice and orange juice with filtered water, grade A maple syrup, and Himalayan pink salt. The maple syrup provides the sweetness that you need for this tart beverage. If you don’t like maple syrup, you can replace it with raw agave nectar. Enjoy this beverage before your workout or on a hot sunny day. If it tastes great to you and you decide to make it again, let us know in the comments so we can provide similar recipes.

Water is the most important nutrient for humans. Without water, the body cannot function optimally, but many people struggle to keep up with the recommended daily intake of water. Failure to quench your thirst for water can lead to dehydration, which is the most preventable medical condition in existence. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize the severity of dehydration and how it affects the body.

What Is Dehydration?

Without water, the body cannot function. Water comprises about 60% of the body’s weight, and most of it is found within bodily cells (the intracellular space). The rest of the water is in the extracellular space, which includes blood vessels and the space between cells. Dehydration occurs when the body eliminates more water than it takes in. Water leaves the body via sweat, breath, and waste (urine or bowels). Still, the fact remains that about 75% Americans are chronically dehydrated. This can lead to fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, sluggish metabolism, and kidney stones.

The best way to stay hydrated is to regularly drink water. Health experts advise that you drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. If you weigh 150 pounds and divide that by two to get 75, you should drink 75 ounces of water per day. This will, of course, vary if you engage in physical activity. There is another way to hydrate the body, and that is via your diet. Many water-rich foods help to improve hydration, and they are included in the following recipes. Drink water or eat your water to avoid dehydration!

Found naturally in the body, electrolytes are minerals that the body requires for normal functions and fluid balance. Cells use electrolytes to help maintain electrical currents between the muscles and nerves, be it for managing heart rhythm, muscle contractions, or brain function. The body needs electrolytes in order to prevent muscle cramping, but mostly to keep the body from shutting down.

The body loses electrolytes via sweat, and parents must ensure that children who are playing all the time replenish their electrolytes, especially during warmer months. While water is a necessary component to optimal physical health, overconsumption of water can flood the cells and evict the electrolytes, which muscles, tissues, and nerves need to function properly. Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water for optimal hydration, but focus on ingredients that are naturally rich in electrolytes to refuel the cells with these essential minerals and vitamins.

The Unhealthy Electrolytes You Don’t Need

When people think of electrolytes, they immediately think of Powerade, Gatorade, and other popular sport’s drinks. These drinks are dangerous for your health because they are often rich in high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, red 40, blue 1, sucrose syrup, and monopotassium phosphate. Rather than subjecting your body to these toxins, consume DIY drinks that contain great sources of natural electrolytes. Celtic sea salt, raw honey, hibiscus tea, and 100% pure coconut water are all rich in electrolytes, and they’re in the following recipes.

Lime Cooler

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon Celtic sea salt
  • 2-4 tablespoons raw honey
  • ½ gallon filtered water

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well.
  • Refrigerate before serving. Enjoy!

Coconut Lemon Sports Drink

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups 100% pure coconut water (no additives or preservatives)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1-2 cups filtered water
  • ¼ teaspoon Celtic sea salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons raw honey

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well.
  • Refrigerate before serving. Enjoy!

Fruit Punch

Ingredients:

  • 7 cups hibiscus tea (use 7 tea bags to brew and a large pot to brew this amount)
  • 2-4 tablespoons raw honey
  • ½ teaspoon Celtic sea salt

Instructions:

  • After brewing the hibiscus tea, remove the tea bags and pour it, along with the rest of the ingredients, in a large pitcher and stir well.
  • Refrigerate before serving. Enjoy!

More often than not, drinking water throughout the day is the best way to sufficiently hydrate the body. Before we continue down a road, which may seem as though we are slandering the significance of water, let us preface it by saying that water is life’s blood; it keeps the body going. That being said, there are instances when the body requires more than water can give. For instance, if you are sick, out in the sun for hours, exercising frequently, or pregnant, the body needs electrolytes to help regulate bodily functions.

When most people think of electrolytes, they think of sugary, neon-colored sports drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, or Vitamin Water. The problem with these drinks, aside from the long list of artificial flavors, chemicals, and dyes, is that they all contain an excessive amount of sugar. The sugar can lead to excess fat storage and blood sugar spikes, causing your energy levels to waver. Another problem with these drinks is that a lot of people drink them when they aren’t exerting the energy to burn away the sugar.

The body needs to be replenished with electrolytes to ensure that everything functions optimally. For instance, the body will cramp easily when electrolyte levels are low. Electrolytes form electrically charged particles (ions) in bodily fluids, and these ions aid with nerve impulse transmission and make it possible for muscles to contract. Additionally, electrolytes help to balance blood acidity and pressure, and they work to rebuild damaged tissues.

When you sweat, the sodium and potassium electrolytes are lost. One can also lose electrolytes during bouts of vomiting or diarrhea. To maintain healthy electrolyte levels, try making the following electrolyte drinks.

The Pick-Me-Up

This is the closest you’ll get to a caffeine-free, sugar-free boost of energy. The ginger helps to increase circulation, boost the digestive process, and increase metabolism. It works in conjunction with turmeric to help you avoid the afternoon slump by naturally boosting energy levels.

Ingredients:

  • Enough hot filtered water to fill your favorite mug
  • 5 teaspoons raw agave syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 thin slices fresh ginger root

Instructions:

  • Add the honey, cardamom, turmeric, and ginger root to your mug and pour the water over everything. Stir well and enjoy during the morning or middle of the day. Drinking it at night may keep you up.

Squeeze The Day

Fresh citrus juice is one of the best ways to hydrate cells in the body and replenish vitamin C levels. By adding Himalayan salt, this drink automatically contains potassium and calcium, both of which are essential electrolytes and trace minerals that help improve muscle contraction.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 5 cups filtered water
  • 1/8 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt
  • 2 tablespoons raw agave syrup

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a sports bottle and shake well to combine the flavors. Enjoy!

Fire In The Hole

This may be the simplest electrolyte drink in existence! The lemon has alkaline properties working to maintain healthy pH levels, especially in the skin. Cayenne pepper works to increase cardiovascular movement throughout the body, in addition to improving heart health.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • ½ lemon, sliced into thin rounds
  • 4 cups filtered water

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a large pitcher and mix well. Drink all of this in one day for best results.

You don’t have to be an exercise junkie to enjoy a green smoothie. Green smoothies supply the body with an assortment of nutrients, no matter if you are drinking them for breakfast or post-workout. They are incredibly easy to make and they are great ways to sneak more green vegetables into your diet.

How To Make These Magical Elixirs

There are a few tricks to know in order to make your green smoothie a little more palatable. You want to have a pleasant balance of flavors because you don’t want your smoothies to be off-putting. The perfect balance is 60% fruits and 40% greens, especially if you are working with strong flavors like kale or chard. You can be a little more generous with spinach because the flavor isn’t as strong.

Remove The Stems

Always remove the stems! Leaving the stems on your kale, beet greens, or chard is a great way to end up with a slightly bitter flavor. Always remove the central stems and tear up the leaves before blending them.

Avoid Sugar

The last thing you want to add to a green smoothie is sugar. Some people may worry that the fruit/vegetable flavor profile won’t be palatable, so they add sugar, which is a mistake. If you feel as though you need your smoothie to be sweeter, try adding one Medjool date (unsulfured) or a teaspoon of raw agave syrup. You can always avoid sugar by using naturally sweet fruits like mango, pineapple, or berries.
