Natural remedies for enlarged prostate

Men who live long enough have a very high chance of developing an enlarged prostate gland. An enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), differs from prostate cancer and treatment will depend on symptoms. Some men with enlarged prostates don’t ever experience symptoms, but most men have mild symptoms. The management of these symptoms will depend on their severity, and this article aims to look at natural remedies that relieve symptoms or potentially shrink an enlarged prostate.

What Is An Enlarged Prostate?

The prostate gland wraps around the urethra, which is the tube out of which urine flows. Belonging to the male reproductive system, the prostate gland naturally gets bigger as men age. Several factors may cause a prostate to enlarge. Aging and changing cells in the testicles may play a roll in the gland’s growth. Men who have their testicles removed at a young age as a result of an accident or cancer, for example, do not develop BPH. Additionally, the prostate begins to shrink if older men who have BPH remove their testicles. Although BPH is non-cancerous, it does increase the risk for prostate cancer.

Eventually, an enlarged prostate can clamp down on the urethra and restrict the flow of urine from the bladder. This can lead to a variety of problems, including:

 • Difficulty in voiding
 • Frequent urination
 • Urinary tract infections
 • Urinary leakage

For men with enlarged prostates, the following natural remedies may help to relieve symptoms.

5 Natural Remedies For An Enlarged Prostate

Change Your Bathroom Habits

If you experience bothersome urinary symptoms, it may be time to change your bathroom habits. As soon as you feel the urge to urinate, go to the restroom and empty your bladder each time. This will help reduce the number of trips you make to the restroom. To ease urination, experts recommend that you relax as much as possible beforehand. Anxiety can make it more difficult to urinate, so block out your symptoms and consider meditation to ease the flow of urine.

Stinging Nettle

European stinging nettle can cause a sharp jolt of pain if you come in contact with the hairs on its leaves. Although this is the case, it doesn’t have that effect when brewed or cooked. In fact, stinging nettle may benefit men with BPH. Nettle root contains similar antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that are in saw palmetto and pygeum. In fact, some herbal concoctions often combine saw palmetto with nettle root to reduce the size of the prostate.

Eat A Plant-Based Diet

According to several studies, it’s best for men with enlarged prostates to follow a plant-based diet. Decreasing the intake of animal-based foods, or eliminating them from the diet entirely, is the first line of defense for reducing the size of the prostate. It’s best to prioritize fresh fruits and vegetables because they exhibit potent antioxidant activity that reduces oxidative stress. They are also rich in fiber, anti-inflammatory properties, and other vitamins and minerals. It’s also beneficial to consume starch-resistant foods because they contain beneficial organisms that improve gut microbiome. Improving gut health ultimately enhances immune function, which may reduce inflammation in the prostate. BPH is an inflammatory process, so reducing the rate of inflammation can only benefit your health. Focus on lentils, green bananas, green beans, kidney beans, and other gut healthy foods.

Watch What You Drink And When

As you are well aware, the liquids you consume must eventually come out. Cutting down or monitoring what and when you drink can help cut down on urinary irritation. Researchers confirm that caffeine and alcohol encourage the kidneys to produce urine. That means you can expect more frequent trips to the bathroom when drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. It’s best to avoid or moderate your nighttime intake of these beverages, as it may cut down how often you need to urinate. This may help improve sleep if you regularly wake up at night to empty the bladder. Additionally, limit the consumption of cranberry juice and wine, especially before you leave the house or go to bed.

Saw Palmetto

This herb may be the most studied herb in regards to naturally reducing an enlarged prostate. This herbal remedy comes from the fruit of the palm tree, and several studies confirm that it may be effective at relieving BPH symptoms. Saw palmetto inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and reduces the size of the prostate’s inner lining. The research on saw palmetto as an effective remedy for BPH is ongoing. Preliminary studies, however, find that the anti-inflammatory and hormone-blocking properties may help men with BPH.

There is no doubt that you have seen or been to a smoothie establishment. There are healthy options, seemingly healthy options, and glorified milkshakes. Some of the recipes even state that they contain juice and ice cream. Those smoothies do not do anything for your overall health. In fact, they only make you crave unhealthy foods and increase your sugar intake.

On the other hand, a smoothie can be an excellent source of easy-to-digest fuel for the entire body, especially your muscles. That should be of great interest if you are focusing on your gains in the gym. With the following ingredients, you can ensure your smoothies will be nutrient-dense, instead of detracting from your progress.

Spirulina

It’s possible that this ingredient may not be a go-to selection for you, but it is one of the most nutrient-dense ingredients on this list. Familiarize yourself with spirulina, which is a blue-green algae that is rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, zinc, iron, beta-carotene, and so much more. Just remember that a little goes a long way and it can have a seaweed-like taste, so don’t treat this like protein powder.

Beets

Yes, you can add beets to your smoothie and make it taste good! Beets exhibit anti-inflammatory activity and are rich in iron, folate, and several B-vitamins. A one-cup serving of beets also offers 442 milligrams (mg) of potassium, which may help lower blood pressure. The body can better absorb iron when you consume it with vitamin C, so pair beets with citrus fruits, apples, and carrots for better nutrient absorption.

Cinnamon

Fruits and vegetables get a lot of love and support as smoothie ingredients, but spices like cinnamon are typically neglected. Cinnamon is as versatile as it is aromatic and flavorful. According to several studies, cinnamon may help regulate blood sugar, making it an excellent choice for people with diabetes. It may also reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. It is also a warming spice that goes great with bananas, almond butter, maple syrup, chia seeds, pears, and more.

Bananas

Believe it or not, every smoothie does not have to contain bananas, but it is a useful ingredient, both nutritionally and texturally. Frozen or soft, bananas bring both a natural sweetness and creamy texture to your smoothies. They are also rich in potassium, fiber, complex carbs, and vitamin B6, which is integral for optimal brain and immune function.

Almond Butter

If you have the option to purchase raw almond butter, please do so because other varieties can include added sugars and problematic oils. Almond butter is a great smoothie ingredient because it contains monounsaturated fat and doesn’t have nearly as much saturated fat as peanut butter. It is also rich in protein and fiber, two nutrients that help keep those hunger pangs at bay.

Non-Dairy Milk

Although water is a perfectly acceptable liquid to use in a smoothie, non-dairy milks make smoothies more creamy and filling. One of the primary benefits of non-dairy milks is that they increase calcium absorption. Regarding protein content, soy milk is the best option, but soy can be inflammatory for many people. Both almond milk and cashew milk are great options for smoothies as well. Whichever non-dairy milk you select, make sure to buy unsweetened varieties, as many contain added sugars, stabilizers, and other processed ingredients. You can also make your own non-dairy milks, which is the best and most nutritious option.

Chia Seeds

These seeds may be small, but they are mighty, packing a lot of heart-healthy omega-3s and fiber per serving. Research suggests that chia seeds may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Don’t add too many chia seeds to a smoothie, or else the texture of the smoothie may feel closer to chia pudding. As a side note, chia pudding is a great pre- or post-workout snack to fuel your muscles.

Spinach

Popeye was leading the charge about popularizing spinach! It is a great green to add to smoothies because it doesn’t really flavor your smoothies. Add bananas and some other fruits and you won’t even know the spinach is there, besides the color. Spinach is a great source of protein, magnesium, folate, iron, and more. It also contains lutein, which promotes healthy eyesight. Spinach is also a great source of vitamin K, with one serving providing nearly 200% of the daily value.

Raspberries

To round out the list, we have raspberries, which are low in sugar (five grams per cup) and full of fiber (eight grams per cup). Raspberries are also rich in potassium, vitamin C, and a variety of antioxidants. Pair raspberries with a protein source and your smoothie will be great for muscle building and anti-aging.

Erectile dysfunction exercises

Exercise is paramount when it comes to combatting erectile dysfunction. According to several studies, regular erectile dysfunction exercises help to get your blood pumping and improve endothelium function. Endothelium is the inner lining of blood vessels and endothelial cells release substances that control vascular relaxation and contraction.

The blood vessels in the penis are about one-third the size of those in the heart. If you experience erectile dysfunction because of vascular issues, it’s possible that you’re at risk for heart problems as well. Taking steps to keep your endothelium healthy may help you reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction. Being more physically active is necessary for optimal circulation, but there are also other exercises that encourage sexual health. Continue reading to learn more about them.

Kegel Exercises For Men

Kegel exercises are some of the most beneficial movements for erectile dysfunction. In order to fight the effects of ED, you must strengthen the muscles in your pelvic floor. Kegel exercises, when performed correctly, do that in an efficient way. For men, the goal is to strengthen the bulbocavernosus muscle. This muscle allows the penis to fill with blood during an erection, pump semen during ejaculation, and empty the urethra after urination. When you target this muscle, you should be able to experience longer-lasting erections and better penile function.

Ideally, you should practice Kegel exercises every day to experience noticeable improvements. You can practice Kegels anywhere and you can do them lying down, sitting, or standing. Should you have problems such as urinary incontinence or other bladder issues, Kegels may positively impact these areas of your health as well.

How To Do Kegel Exercises For Men

Before you begin, it’s best to locate the bulbocavernosus muscle for your own knowledge. The easiest way to do this is by stopping your stream multiple times during urination. The muscle you use to do that is the one you want to target. Be sure that you aren’t clenching muscles in the stomach, buttocks, or legs when you engage in Kegels. Otherwise, you won’t experience the same results.

To begin, lie down, sit down, or stand up. Engage the bulbocavernosus muscle and hold it for three seconds. Release and repeat three to five more times. Repeat this process at least three times per day for the best results. Once your muscle gets stronger, you can increase the time from three to five seconds. The ultimate goal is to hold it for longer periods of time, with the ultimate hold amounting to 10 seconds, five separate times, thrice daily. The more you strengthen the bulbocavernosus muscle, the better chances you have at improving your condition.

Knee Fallouts

This is a Pilates movement that helps activate the right group of muscles and challenges you to maintain pelvic floor strength while moving. It’s a beginner exercise that focuses on small movements. To being the exercise, lie down with your knees bent, keeping the feet flat on the floor. Allow your arms to rest by your sides. Keeping the spine in a neutral position, exhale and squeeze the pelvic floor muscles and slowly lower one knee to the floor, as if it is a controlled fall to the outside. You should only lower it as far as you can while maintaining activation of the pelvic floor muscles. Keep the pelvic stable, inhale, and release the muscles as you bend the knee again. Repeat on the other side and complete four or five repetitions per side. The goal is to build up to 10 reps per side.

Pelvic Curl

Yet another common exercise in Pilates, this helps to activate the pelvic floor just like knee fallouts. Begin in the same lying down position as the previous exercise. Keep the spine in a neutral position, allowing a small space between your middle back and the floor. Exhale and engage your pelvic floor muscles, tilting the pelvis up toward the belly button. Your back should be pressed flat against the floor while doing this. Slowly lift the buttocks and drive your heels into the floor to push up into a bridge position. Make sure to squeeze your buttocks the entire time, resting your weight on the shoulders. Take three breaths before lowering the buttocks and back down to the floor, vertebra by vertebra. Repeat three to four times and build up to 10 repetitions.

Supine Foot Raises

This is an exercise that actually builds on the movements involved with knee fallouts. The goal for this exercise is small, controlled movements executed to perfection. Begin in the same lying down position as the two previous exercises. Exhale and engage your pelvic floor muscles, slowly lifting your right foot off the floor. Make sure that the pelvis and spine are stable and not wavering as you bring your right leg to a full extension. Inhale and then slowly lower your foot back to the ground. Alternate sides, repeating three to four times on each leg.

Aerobic Exercise

In addition to exercising the pelvic floor muscles, it’s beneficial to engage in other types of exercise, especially aerobic exercise. According to one study, aerobic exercise may help improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Often times, ED results from blood flow problems to the penis. Diabetes, high cholesterol, vascular disease, and obesity affect blood flow and your ability to become erect. Incorporating aerobic exercise to your workout routine not only works to improve cardiovascular health, but may also lead to improvements in ED. A simple 30-minute walk, three to four times a week, may be enough to improve cardiovascular health. Other forms of aerobic exercise include:

 • Rowing
 • Boxing
 • Spin classes
 • Biking
 • Skipping
 • Rebounding
 • Running

Keep in mind that it may take between four to six weeks to notice the effects of practicing these exercises. Don’t expect instantaneous results because, much like strength training, building muscle strength takes time.

The post The Top 5 Benefits And Uses Of Saw Palmetto appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a type of palm that is native to the southwestern United States. It is commonly used in various supplements to improve prostate health, prevent hair loss in men, and balance hormone levels. Saw palmetto has actually been marketed as a natural remedy for an enlarged prostate. In fact, more than a third of all adults in the U.S. who take saw palmetto supplements do so specifically to improve prostate health.

Although more research is needed on saw palmetto’s effect on men’s health, the existing research shows great promise. Some people, including those who may be pregnant, should avoid saw palmetto. Continue reading to learn about the top four benefits of saw palmetto.

May Support Prostate Health

The prostate gland is located between the bladder and the penis. It is responsible for maintaining sperm health, but an enlarged prostate can get in the way of healthy urinary flow and sperm production. According to various research studies, saw palmetto can support prostate health and help prevent issues, such as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. Other studies indicate that saw palmetto may reduce BPH-related urinary symptoms and inflammation. One 15-year study of 30 participants with BPH found that 320 milligrams (mg) of saw palmetto extract per day may help prevent the progression of BPH.

May Reduce Inflammation

There are numerous animal studies that suggest that saw palmetto exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, which may benefit certain health conditions. One study from 2015 in rats with BPH found that saw palmetto effectively decreased inflammation and improved antioxidant status. A separate 2015 study in mice with enlarged prostates found that saw palmetto extract decreased several inflammatory markers, including interleukin 6 (IL-6). Although these studies are promising, research on humans is lacking. For this reason, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to claim that saw palmetto reduces inflammation in humans.

May Improve Urinary Tract Function

It’s possible that saw palmetto may benefit BPH, which is a condition that causes an enlargement of the prostate gland, leading to decreased urine flow. A small 12-week study including participants with BPH found that those who took 1,000 mg of saw palmetto oil mixed with beta-sitosterol experienced significant improvements in BPH symptoms. Another 24-week study of 354 participants found that supplementing with 320 mg of saw palmetto decreased BPH symptoms and improved urinary flow and sexual function. More research is still necessary to determine whether saw palmetto supplements aid urinary tract function in the general population. Current research is promising, though.

May Help Regulate Testosterone Levels

Many people who want to naturally boost testosterone levels may turn to saw palmetto oil as an option. Testosterone affects body composition, sex drive, mood, brain function, and more. Testosterone levels naturally decline naturally with age and can interfere with quality of life. Some research suggests saw palmetto may boost testosterone levels by decreasing the activity of 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, to help preserve testosterone. A 2020 review found that saw palmetto may also block the uptake of DHT and reduce its ability to bind to androgen receptors by almost 50%. A smaller and older study found that supplementing with 1,200 mg of Resettin, a supplement containing saw palmetto and astaxanthin, increased serum testosterone levels by 38%. Looking to boost testosterone levels, consider the Dherbs Testosterone Booster as a natural alternative.

May Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss is very common among men and has numerous causes, from genetics and hormonal changes to certain medications and health conditions. Some people tend to use saw palmetto to balance hormone levels and reduce hair loss. As previously mentioned, saw palmetto may block 5-alpha reductase, which is linked to hair loss. By reducing the uptake of DHT in your hair follicles, saw palmetto may help decrease DHT’s ability to bind to specific hormone receptors. A 16-week study from 2023 involving people with androgenic alopecia who took a specifically formulated saw palmetto supplement found that saw palmetto reduced the rate of hair falling out. It also contributed to hair growth and improved scalp appearance compared to a placebo.

The post 5 Signs You May Suffer From Low Testosterone appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

If you feel that your sex drive has changed and your muscle mass is declining, you may be experiencing low testosterone (low T) levels. Low testosterone is not a life-threatening illness by any means; rather, it is a normal part of aging. If you are a younger man in his 30s and experiencing low T levels, then you may want to consider different approaches to boost your levels.

The body naturally produces testosterone, which can be measured through a blood test. Symptoms can affect the quality of life, or they may go hand in hand with other health conditions. Getting tested can better inform you about your testosterone levels and how it affects the body.

What Is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that the testicles or ovaries mainly produce. The adrenal glands produce dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which the body transforms into both testosterone and estrogen. Testosterone, however, is the primary androgen, meaning it stimulates the development of male characteristics. Males naturally have higher testosterone levels than women do, and it plays many roles in different stages of life, such as:

 • Fetal development: the sex-related gene on the Y chromosome initiates the development of the testicles in male infants about week seven in utero.
 • Puberty for male children: responsible for many changes in pubescent males, including increases in height, body and pubic hair growth, increasing libido, and enlargement of testes, penis, and prostate gland.
 • Adulthood: it is essential for the production of sperm, signals the body to make new red blood cells, ensures muscle and bone strength, and enhances libido.

If you think that your testosterone levels are taking a nosedive, pay attention to the following signs. If you notice that you have one or more of them, consider talking with your primary healthcare provider to discuss ways to boost levels. There are many foods that aid testosterone production, in addition to other methods, so don’t think that options are not available.

Your Libido Is Noticeably Lower

Testosterone plays a predominant role in your sexual desire. It also helps men maintain and get erections long enough to have sex. It isn’t uncommon for men to experience erectile dysfunction occasionally, but if it is a persistent problem, low testosterone levels may be to blame. A sudden drop in sex drive or sustained drop in interest in sexual activity can indicate low T levels.

Reduced Muscle Mass And Strength

Testosterone aids in both building and maintaining muscle mass. Men with low T levels often notice a loss of muscle strength and a harder time building muscle, even with regular training. In addition to muscle loss, it’s common for men with low T levels to experience an increase in body fat, especially around the abdomen. That can be very frustrating if you are putting in a lot of effort at the gym.

Thinning Hair

First of all, hair loss can happen for many reasons, so low T may not always be the culprit. If your testosterone levels dip, it’s possible to experience thinning hair on the scalp, body, and face. Any sudden changes in hair thickness along with other symptoms may indicate another cause, which you should determine in order to solve the issue.

Depression And Mood Changes

Declining testosterone levels do not just affect your physical health; rather, they can also impact your mental health. According to research, men with low testosterone levels tend to report more feelings of sadness, irritability, and lack of motivation. It’s common to blame those feelings on work- or relationship-related stress, but that isn’t always the case. If there is no obvious reason for your mood changes, low testosterone could be to blame.

Energy Levels Decline

If you have a great sleep schedule and maintain a balanced diet and still feel persistent fatigue, low testosterone is a potential and likely cause. One of the telltale signs of low T is a dip in energy. When testosterone levels drop, energy levels tend to follow suit. That ultimately leads to a general feeling of sluggishness or lack of motivation. Too tired to do the activities you used to enjoy? It might be time to get your T checked.

If you are looking for a natural way to boost your testosterone levels, consider the Dherbs Testosterone Booster. It helps maintain balanced testosterone levels, assists in building and maintaining muscle mass, and contributes to feelings of energy and stamina.

]]>

Generally speaking, every dad knows what to expect on Father’s Day. Socks, ties, coffee mugs, funny cards, and a homemade dinner are generally in store for dads on their special day. While gifts from the family are priceless and honor fatherhood, it’s important for fathers to take charge of their health. They play a large role in shaping their children’s future, so they should be around to see them grow up.

June is Men’s Health Month, making Father’s Day the perfect time to emphasize men’s health. Fathers devote a lot of attention to their children during their lifetime. Statistically, fathers, and men in general, tend to neglect their own health. Looking after personal health is just as important as monitoring the health of children. Several studies confirmed that fathers with poor physical and mental health have a negative impact on their children’s overall well being.

For Father’s Day, we have five health tips for dads that will help them live happier, healthier lives. Stick around for more Father’s Days when you maintain overall health!

Schedule An Annual Physical

Statistically, men are 24% less likely than women to visit a doctor for yearly physicals. One of the best ways to stay on top of your health is by taking preventative measures. Several surveys concluded that men are 32% more likely than women to end up in a hospital for long-term diabetic complications. And men are 28% more likely than women to be hospitalized for congestive heart failure. Don’t let dad put off doctor visits!

Seek Help For Depression

This tip applies to men who grapple with depression or severe anxiety. It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression in order to seek help when necessary. For both men and women, depression is one of the leading causes of disease and injury worldwide. Signs and symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness, reduced energy levels, thoughts of suicide, and persistent sadness. Anyone who experiences these symptoms should seek help immediately. Many hotlines, support groups, and alternative treatments can benefit mental health

Find Ways To Manage Stress

Many health practitioners explain that stress is one of the primary risks of developing depression, heart disease, and chronic inflammation. Excess stress hormones in the body can negatively impact overall health. Fathers and mothers can hold a lot of stress, and certain things their children do only add to it. While there are many ways to naturally reduce stress, each person will have to find their own outlet that invites zen into their life. If you need help getting rid of stress, click here to read about ways to address your stress.

Consider A Colonoscopy

This is not a fun topic to discuss with dads, but it is a necessary one if they are nearing 50 years old. In the United States, colon cancer happens to be the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The Standard American Diet increases waste accumulation in the colon and digestive tract, and this can lead to numerous intestinal disorders, as well as colon cancer. A colonoscopy is an excellent way to screen for colon cancer. Men who are 50 years old or older should consider a colonoscopy, especially if there is family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.

Focus On Cardiovascular Health

If you want dad to keep up with chasing you at the park, make sure he is in great cardiovascular shape. Improving and maintaining heart health requires constant work. From eating the right foods to regularly exercising, keeping the heart healthy is a full-time job. Health experts suggest to engage in 150 minutes of moderately intense cardiovascular exercise per week. Additionally, it’s ideal to eat a healthy diet that consists of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Try to limit the consumption of alcohol, meat, processed foods, saturated fats, refined starches, and dairy products. All of those foods negatively impact heart health.

The post Men With Prostate Cancer Can Improve Sexual Function By Exercising Frequently appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to the inability to maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. That said, it is not uncommon to experience occasional difficulty in the bedroom. If it happens frequently and disrupts your sex life, your doctor may diagnose you with ED.

This article, while not entirely focused on ED as a health condition, recaps a new study involving men who were treated for prostate cancer. Could regular aerobic exercise and resistance training cause significant improvements in sexual function in men treated for prostate cancer? According to a recent study, this type of intervention for men with prostate cancer could help them avoid sexual dysfunction.

Most Men Experience ED After Prostate Cancer Treatment

Health experts note that nearly all men will experience some level of ED for the first several months following prostate cancer treatment. Most men return to their pretreatment sexual function within a year, but a significant amount of men do not. ED is a common issue that affects prostate cancer patients, but it is not solely associated with these men. ED can result from relationship issues or mental health issues as well. The reason it is more common in prostate cancer patients is because they are not typically offered health interventions to improve sexual function

Study Participants Exercised Three Times Per Week For Six Months

The study participants included 112 men diagnosed with prostate cancer with a median age of 66. Participants were divided into randomized groups to receive one of three interventions:

 • Six months of supervised and self-directed resistance training and aerobic exercise.
 • Standard medical care
 • Six months of supervised and self-directed resistance training and aerobic exercise. This group also included a short, one-time educational session that covered coping strategies for challenges related to cancer treatment. The session also covered stress management tools and goal-setting tools to aid sexual rehabilitation.

In the two groups participating in resistance training and aerobic exercise, they worked out three times per week during the six-month period. Participants engaged in 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular training for the aerobic portion at moderate to vigorous intensity. They used rowing machines, cycling machines, treadmills, and similar equipment. During the resistance training portion, participants engaged in six to eight weightlifting exercises targeting upper and lower body muscle groups. Additionally, the participants were encouraged to exercise on their own in order to meet the suggested 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

The Findings

Researchers observed that exercise was able to improve erectile function by 5.1 points on average. This measurement is from the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), which is used to measure sexual health, particularly erectile function. Experts note that function is scored on a scale of 1 to 30. The higher the score, the better the function. A four-point improvement is necessary to note clinical differences.

Erectile function was more significant in for the subgroups who received additional androgen deprivation therapy and radiotherapy for their prostate cancer on top of engaging in exercise. These results were compared to those who underwent a prostatectomy, which is a surgical procedure that removes all or part of the prostate.

The men who reported lower levels of sexual desire, sexual satisfaction, and overall satisfaction prior to the start of the study benefited more from exercise. By regularly engaging in exercise, the participants also experienced a reduction in weight gain. They also experienced improved muscle strength. Finally, the educational session informing participants of mental techniques did not make a difference for ED symptoms.

Frequent Exercise Benefits Blood Flow

Consistent with existing research, this study confirmed the link between exercise and improved sexual function. This is more related to an overall link between cardiovascular health and sexual function. For example, earlier research found that yoga was able to improve ED in men with prostate cancer, and in older men without prostate cancer. Based on this research and other studies, health experts concur that men with ED benefit from improving cardiovascular fitness and overall circulation. Additionally, improving blood flow should translate to better erectile function.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be a normal part of having a penis, to put it bluntly. Sorry, folks, but these issues are part of manhood, especially as men age. Ongoing ED issues can interfere with your sex life, but they can also cause issues outside the bedroom.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

ED is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. If you have trouble achieving an erection from time to time, you don’t need to worry or doom scroll different medical websites. If ED is an ongoing issue, though, it may cause stress and affect your self-confidence, two things that can create relationship problems. Underlying health conditions can also increase the risk of ED, so you may want to treat the conditions in order to remedy the ED problem.

In the past, health professionals thought that ED resulted from psychological causes. These days, experts say that ED is commonly caused by physical health issues, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and vascular disease. Some prescription drugs, including antidepressants, blood pressure meds, and sedatives, can also cause ED. In some cases, a combination of physical and psychological factors may cause the issue. Below, we will highlight everyday habits that can worsen ED. You may not even know that you are causing the problem!

5 Common habits that fuel Erectile Dysfunction

1. Being sedentary

If you do not engage in regular physical activity, then you are at a higher risk for developing ED. Research indicates that regular aerobic exercise, such as swimming, cycling, or walking, can significantly improve ED. A 2023 study found that exercise can improve ED symptoms just as effectively as medications like Viagra. Just remember that ED can serve as a barometer for underlying cardiovascular health. Urologists suggest that you engage in aerobic exercise to improve cardiovascular health to positively influence erectile health and function.

2. Using marijuana

As of 2024, marijuana is legalized for recreational use in 24 states, plus the District of Columbia. People use it to help promote relaxation, improve sleep, and reduce anxiety. Although some people report that using cannabis increases libido and improves sexual performance, it may be harmful in the long run. According to researchers, THC, the active compound in cannabis, affects the brain’s neurotransmitters. Over time, that can disrupt the necessary signals to achieve an erection. Chronic marijuana use can also reduce testosterone levels, which can impair sexual performance and libido. In some individuals, marijuana can increase feelings of anxiety and paranoia, which can contribute to performance anxiety and worsen ED.

3. Insufficient sleep

If you do not get enough sleep, cortisol levels can increase and testosterone levels can decrease. How significant that decrease is will depend on how sleep-deprived you are. Higher cortisol levels can increase levels of stress and anxiety, in addition to weight gain, moodiness, and mental performance. If you do not regularly get enough sleep, you may experience fatigue and a reduced interest in sexual activity. That lack of interest can worsen sexual dysfunction, both of which feed off each other. Urologists note that men who do not sleep enough may not produce sufficient signal from the pituitary gland, and ultimately suffer from low testosterone and ED.

4. Drinking too much alcohol

Health experts note that a drink or two here and there will most likely not have a big impact on sexual health. Excessive alcohol intake, however, can lead to ED problems in the short- and long-term. Alcohol is a depressant that can interfere with the brain’s ability to send the right signals that trigger an erection. Heavy drinking can also reduce testosterone levels, which are integral for optimal sexual function. Additionally, chronic alcohol use can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can negatively impact sexual health.

5. Smoking

In case you needed another reason to stop smoking cigarettes, this is it. Smoking can damage blood vessels, which reduces blood flow through the body, including to the penis. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, limiting the circulation necessary for an erection. Long-term smoking can also lead to permanent vascular damage, making erections much more difficult to achieve. Finally, smoking increases the risk of developing other health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, all of which can cause ED. In fact, men who smoke cigarettes are almost two times as likely to develop ED compared to men who don’t smoke.

Testosterone is an androgen, a male sex hormone, that stimulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics as boys grow into men. The growth of body hair and the deepening of voices is all because of testosterone. Not to mention, it helps boys put on muscle as they go through adolescence. Testosterone is mainly made in the testicles and is essential for sperm production.

Testosterone doesn’t only occur in men, though. Women have testosterone, just not as much as men do. Women produce testosterone in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands and ovaries. It affects sex drive, resilience, and ability to build muscle. Most women do not concern themselves with testosterone and tend to focus on estrogen. That said, it is a hormone that you can boost by eating certain foods.

Men and women benefit from testosterone in myriad ways, but it primarily helps build healthy bones and muscles. It also affects muscle strength and the distribution of fat. Testosterone may even aid cognitive function, support mood, and enhance energy levels.

Why Should Women Have Testosterone?

Testosterone, in healthy ranges, can help the body repair and heal connective tissue, including bones, ligaments, tendons, skin, and nails. Healthy testosterone levels can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis as women age, while also influencing joint recovery. There are moments in life when women produce less testosterone, for example, before and during menopause.

Adrenal gland function can also influence testosterone production. A stressed out or worn out person may not be able to produce enough testosterone. Cortisol that rushes through the body takes a toll on the adrenal glands. Being in a constant fight-or-flight state can deplete repair hormones like testosterone. For this reason, the healthier and more resilient the adrenal glands are, the easier it is for them to produce testosterone.

Symptoms Of Low Testosterone In Women

Women who have low testosterone levels or testosterone deficiency may experience:

 • Fatigue (including a drop in energy levels despite adequate sleep)
 • Mood changes (such as irritability and depression, in some cases)
 • Weight gain (because low testosterone can lead to increased body fat, even to the point of obesity)
 • Cognitive changes (some women may struggle to concentrate and experience memory difficulties)
 • Decreased muscle mass (maintaining muscle is difficult with low testosterone levels)
 • Reduced libido (a very common symptom in women with low testosterone)

If you are a woman and find that you can relate to the above symptoms, you may want to test your T levels. Women with T levels below 15 nanograms per deciliter have low T count. If you want to avoid supplements, the following nutrients from foods can help boost testosterone levels.

Magnesium

Researchers note that magnesium may impact testosterone production by reducing oxidative stress. Studies suggest that magnesium works to increase testosterone levels. You can enhance testosterone production even more by increasing magnesium intake in combination with regular exercise.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Whether you are trying to boost testosterone levels or not, omega 3 fatty acids can benefit your health. Primarily found in fish and some plant-based sources, omega-3s can influence inflammation levels in the body. In some instances, supplementing with omega-3s for 12 weeks increased T levels. This was not the case for women supplementing with omega-3s.

Vitamin D

There are vitamin D receptors in the ovaries and adrenal glands, where testosterone is made in women. As vitamin D binds to these receptors, it can stimulate the ovaries and adrenal glands to produce testosterone. Additionally, getting enough vitamin D can help improve sleep quality. Poor sleep can actually reduce testosterone, so make sure to get vitamin D to support the body in these ways.

Antioxidants

According to research, antioxidants work to combat oxidative stress and protect cellular damage from free radicals. Oxidative stress can damage cells that influence testosterone production, such as those in the adrenal glands and ovaries. Antioxidants work to protect organs from damage and support their ability to produce testosterone.

Testosterone-Boosting Foods

Focusing on whole foods and eliminating processed junk from your diet can make a world of difference to your overall health. Researchers confirm that a diet high in bread, pastries, dairy products, and desserts, in combination with a low intake of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, can inhibit healthy testosterone production. Here are some testosterone-boosting foods to aid your efforts.

Pumpkin Seeds

Naturally rich in zinc, pumpkin seeds provide a vital nutrient necessary for testosterone production. They also contain phytosterols, which are plant compounds that act similarly to cholesterol. Phytosterols also work to support testosterone levels by influencing pathways involved in steroid hormone production.

Leafy Greens

There are many reasons to get your daily dose of leafy greens. They are naturally rich in trace minerals and other compounds that promote overall health. Kale and spinach are great sources of magnesium, which as we explained earlier, is involved with testosterone production.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate arils (which people commonly refer to as seeds), are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols. Several studies indicate that pomegranate juice may help increase testosterone in both men and women

Onion

Naturally rich in flavonoids, onions may help increase testosterone production. Researchers note that the quercetin in onions has the potential to boost testosterone levels. The other nutrients in onions may help manage factors that lead to low T count, such as obesity and insulin resistance.

Broccoli

Broccoli, a cruciferous vegetable, is another great green to add to your diet. It can help prevent the body from making bad estrogens. Indoles are the compounds that convert into diindolylmethane (DIM) during digestion. DIM may convert estrogen into less potent forms, reducing estrogen’s overall effects in the body.

One of the primary concerns with prostate cancer is that the disease can progress to an advanced stage and become life-threatening. That is truly the case for most cancers, which is why medical experts stress the importance of early detection. They also harp on maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle habits to reduce the risk of cancer. And new research further amplifies this point, showing that eating a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts and seeds can reduce the risk of prostate cancer spreading.

The study, which was recently published in JAMA Network Open, made an interesting discovery. Researchers noted that men with prostate cancer who consume a high amount of plant-based foods can cut their risk of cancer growth by nearly 50% compared to those who don’t eat a lot of plant-based foods. Consuming a predominantly plant-based diet has been associated with better prostate cancer-specific outcomes. It may also help reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. Making small changes in your diet to focus on more plant-based foods can do more good than you know!

Plant-Based Diet May Control Prostate Cancer

The study involved more than 2,000 men who were at an average age of 65 years old at the start. They all had a diagnosis of non-metastatic prostate cancer, meaning it hadn’t spread to other parts of the body. Each participant completed a comprehensive diet and lifestyle questionnaire to provide details about their eating habits.

During an average 6.5-year period, 190 participants experienced a progression in prostate cancer, and 61 died from prostate cancer-specific causes. Study authors then determined that the participants who consumed the highest amounts of plant-based foods experienced a 47% lower risk of prostate cancer spreading than the men who ate fewer plant-based foods.

Small Dietary Changes Can Make A Difference

It can be difficult to make the complete switch to plant-based, but you don’t have to. Ideally, you simply add more plant-based foods to your diet and if you consume meat, focus on lean protein that is high-quality. Study authors noted that in comparison to the lowest level of plant-based consumption, the highest meant eating 1.9 more portions of vegetables, 1.6 more servings of fruit, and 0.9 more servings of whole grains per day.

What does that mean in relation to a plate of food? Well, a standard serving of fruit, for example, can be one medium apple, banana, orange, or pear. A half-cup of brown rice is a single serving of whole grains, while a half-cup of cooked or one cup of raw broccoli or carrots counts as a single portion of vegetables. People who eat higher quantities of whole grains, vegetables, and fruits on a regular basis also eat fewer animal-based foods, on average. That could mean that they eat fewer eggs, one less serving of dairy, and marginally less meat. And since a growing body of research indicates that eating more plant-based foods reduces the risk of prostate cancer, you may want to consider eating more of these foods.

A Plant-Based Diet Offers Numerous Benefits

There have been many previous studies and reviews related to the potential protective effects of plant-based foods for prostate health. Why is a plant-based diet so beneficial for the prostate? Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and phytochemicals, which may prevent free radical damage that can harm cells. Animal-based foods, such as processed meats and red meat, are carcinogens, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Consuming dairy products also increases the risk of worse prostate cancer outcomes. A plant-based dietary program helps you steer clear of harmful foods and shifts your focus to foods that help the body.

Prostate Cancer Is Most Common Among Men In the United States

After skin cancer, prostate cancer is still the most common cancer among men in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2024 alone; roughly 35,000 men will die from the condition. Even though six out of every 10 prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65, dietary changes early on in life can make a big difference.

It is never too late to make a dietary change. You don’t have to become a vegan straight away, but including more plant-based foods in your daily diet can help a lot. Incorporate more of these foods daily and try out one day of complete plant-based eating every week. Try for two days a week if you can! Greater consumption of plant-based foods may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer and improve overall quality of life.
