If you make your own almond milk, you are always left with almond pulp. After pouring the blended mixture through a cheesecloth, sieve, or nut milk bag, you press as much liquid out as possible. You normally discard this pulp because you don’t know what to do with it. If you compost, then you add the pulp to your compost bin. What you may not realize is that you can use this almond pulp in various cooking and non-cooking applications, for example, these maple orange sesame bites.

The great thing about almond pulp is that you can place it in an airtight container and freeze it until you need it. Don’t keep it in the fridge for a year. We suggest you use it within two months of putting it into the freezer. Almond pulp is similar to almond flour, in that it helps bind the rest of the ingredients in energy bites together. Plus, it often contains a little sweetness if you add dates, vanilla extract, or agave to your homemade almond milk. If you want to make your own almond milk, click here for a very simple raw vegan recipe.

Because the almonds are already blended into a pulp, your food processor will have a much easier job combining the ingredients. Once the mixture becomes clumpy, you can stop blending. Form the blended mixture into bite-size balls and then place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze the energy bites for 30 minutes, remove them, and then roll them in sesame seeds. Place them in the fridge for another hour or so and then remove to enjoy. These make for a filling snack or healthy dessert option!

When you find a salad dressing you really like, you want to dress every salad you make in that dressing. The only problem with that is that you can use too much of a good thing. You don’t want to bore your taste buds with the same flavors, which is why we encourage everyone to have a rotating list of dressings they enjoy. If you have five to 10 dressings to choose from, you will never tire of your salads. And this cucumber tahini dressings is one you’ll want to include in your top 10!

Tahini is a great ingredient that adds a subtle nuttiness and a lot of creaminess to a dressing. It is a common ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, but it also makes for an excellent salad dressing ingredient. Just make sure that the tahini is raw if you are cleansing. You shouldn’t see any other ingredient on the list besides sesame seeds. Because this dressing calls for five tablespoons of tahini, you don’t need extra olive oil, or another type of oil for the dressing. The acidity of the freshly squeezed lemon juice pairs beautifully with the nutty tahini flavor. Plus, the cucumbers contain a lot of water, which helps make the dressing a beautiful consistency.

Although tahini is seemingly the star of this salad dressing, the real kicker is the cumin. Cumin is a plant that’s closely related to dill, parsley, and caraway. This spice can add a nutty warmth and peppery flavor to sauces, or dressings in this case. It is commonly paired with citrus or another acidic ingredient because they complement each other. Please let us know if you enjoy this unique dressing by dropping a comment below.

Is hummus good for you? The shorter answer is that it is if you make it yourself. If you buy flavored, packaged hummus from the store, you may be consuming excess amounts of sodium, preservatives, and flavorings. Not all store bought hummus is bad for you, but most are not as nutritious as the recipes you make yourself.

What Is Hummus?

Hummus is a great dip that’s made by blending chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. There are many variations, but that is a fairly standard recipe. Homemade hummus is an excellent source of protein, fiber, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. In fact a 100-gram serving of hummus provides the following nutrients:

  • Calories: 166
  • Fat: 9.6 grams (g)
  • Protein: 7.9 g
  • Fiber: 6 g
  • Carbs: 14.3g
  • Folate: 21% of the recommended daily intake (RDI)
  • Phosphorus: 18% of the RDI
  • Copper: 26% of the RDI
  • Iron: 14% of the RDI
  • Manganese: 39% of the RDI
  • Zinc: 12% of the RDI
  • Magnesium: 18% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B6: 10% of the RDI

Now, it should be noted that the above nutritional breakdown comes from plain hummus. We aren’t talking about roasted red pepper, garlic, roasted artichoke, or pine nut hummus varieties. Hummus can be an excellent source of dietary fiber, which works to keep you regular by adding bulk to stools, making them easier to pass. Additionally, the body’s gut bacteria turns some of the fiber from hummus into short-chain fatty acid butyrate, which helps nourish colon cells

Are There Other Benefits?

Hummus is full of heart-healthy fats, which come from the olive oil. Studies have shown that people who consume oils with healthy fats have a lower risk of death from heart disease. Increasing your consumption of olive oil by two teaspoons a day may reduce the risk of heart disease by 10%, according to one study. Eating hummus that contains tahini (made from sesame seeds) may also reduce inflammation. The sesame seeds work to reduce IL-6 and CRP, vascular inflammatory markers, which increase the risk of arthritis. Finally, hummus has a low glycemic index, helping you avoid a sharp blood sugar spike. The fats in hummus also slow the absorption of carbs from the gut, providing a slower, steady release of glucose into the bloodstream.

We could go on about hummus and the many health benefits all day, but you came for the recipes and we’re going to give them to you. Read on to learn how to make six variations of this amazing dip.

Get ready for a refreshing and herbaceous take on a classic slaw. Perfect on its own or for accompanying your Middle Eastern feast, this Lebanese slaw is fresh, crunchy, and very addicting. The flavorful, aromatic herbs, citrusy zest of the lemon, and rich olive oil keep you coming back bite after bite. If this is your first experience with a Middle Eastern slaw, we can’t wait to hear what you think of it.

Traditionally, Lebanese slaw contains mint, but we added parsley and dill to the recipe as well. This holy trifecta of herbs will maximize your flavor and turn the deliciousness factor up to 11. Plus, the crispy bite of the chopped scallions beautifully contrasts the intensity of the dill and mint. It’s almost like a Shirazi salad, which contains the same herbs and the addition of cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion.

The real star of this slaw, though, is the Za’atar spice. This traditional Middle Eastern spice mixture is commonly used in savory dishes, but it has a place in light and fresh dishes as well. Throughout history, there have been several variations of this spice blend, but several ingredients tend to remain the same. You can purchase Za’atar spice in the store, or you can easily make your own if you have the spices on hand. It typically contains sesame seeds, sea salt, dried oregano, dried thyme, dried marjoram, and ground sumac.

Every now and again, you come across a sauce that is a game changer. It makes you stop and think about all the other sauces, dressings, and marinades that you’ve eaten in your life. We feel that the sauce that coats the zucchini noodles in this recipe is one of those special sauces. It hits all the major flavor points that you desire in a sauce: acidic, savory, tangy, and slightly sweet.

Tahini is perfectly acceptable to enjoy during your cleanse, so long as the only ingredient is sesame seeds. Make sure that there are no other ingredients, and also avoid tahini if you see roasted sesame seeds on the ingredient list. Tahini is made by grinding sesame seeds and it is not sweet, unlike most nut butters that contain added sweeteners. It exhibits a strong, nutty flavor profile that goes well with assertive flavors like lemon, cayenne, coconut aminos, and apple cider vinegar.

The sauce is definitely more in akin to a stir-fry sauce, given that it includes coconut aminos, lemon, and ginger root. If you want to intensify the flavor, add one clove of minced garlic to the sauce. Don’t add more than one clove, or else the sauce may be too pungent. Finally, you can add other ingredients to the zucchini noodles if you so choose. Sprouts, freshly chopped cilantro, hemp seeds, and raw sunflower seeds are all great ingredients to add to your zucchini noodles.

If your goal in life is to eat hydrating foods, eat cucumbers and you’ll succeed. If you don’t regularly provide the body with enough water, it will begin to shut down. At first, you may noticed decreased physical performance or lower energy levels. The symptoms start to worsen as the body declines into a deeper state of dehydration. Sorry to start out so morbid, but we really just want you all to understand the importance of water.

Cucumbers are crunchy additions to salads, but this recipe brings them directly into the spotlight. There are no other ingredients, in regards to fruits and vegetables, in this salad besides cucumbers. One thing that we do recommend you do is to let the cucumbers marinate in the dressing for one to two hours before serving. This will allow them to soak up the rich flavors in the dressing. That means that every bite you take will explode with vibrant flavors! It may also start to slowly pickle the cucumbers, which adds another acidic flavor dimension. If you have a hankering for spice, throw some more chili flakes in the salad.

One pan meals are the best. First off, you don’t have to clean up as much after you prepare the meal. Secondly, all of the ingredients come together in one pan for an amazing combination of flavors. Now, this recipe doesn’t require a lot of time and effort because the bok choy doesn’t take very long to cook through. Bok choy is a cruciferous vegetable that is prevalent in Asian cooking. It was cultivated in China thousands of years ago, and it’s in the same family as kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and rutabaga.

According to several studies, bok choy is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s rich in folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium, fiber, and protein. The calcium, magnesium, and vitamin K content contribute to healthier bones, while the iron and zinc aid with collagen production.

My goodness, we haven’t talked about how delicious this recipe is! The bok choy is slightly bitter, but it works with the nuttiness of the sesame oil, garlic, shallots, and liquid aminos. Just make sure to use the recommended amount of sesame oil. It is powerful and can take over an entire dish if you use too much.

Sesame milk is not the most popular plant-based milk, despite how easy it is to make. Almond milk, macadamia nut milk, and cashew milk tend to steal the spotlight in the non-dairy milk world. Sure, all of those nuts contain beneficial nutrients, but it doesn’t mean that they outshine the nutritional profiles of sesame seeds.

Sesame seeds are excellent sources of calcium, zinc, copper, iron, protein, magnesium, and heart healthy fats. They are small but mighty! Containing an assortment of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, sesame seeds help to reduce free radical damage, regulate blood pressure, and reduce bad cholesterol. Finally, sesame seeds help promote collage production and boost the immune system. Drink this sesame milk to reap all of those nutritional benefits.

Great sources of fiber, monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fats, and an assortment of vitamins & minerals, seeds are extremely delicious and nutritious. Seeds contain starting materials that are necessary for plant development, which ultimately means they are super good for you. When you consume them as part of a healthy diet, they can help lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar, and lower cholesterol. Include the following seeds in your diet for some pretty amazing health benefits.

Chia Seeds

This is not the first time we have given praise to the mighty chia seed. These little omega-3, protein-packed powerhouses are great sources of soluble fiber, which helps to stabilize blood glucose levels (this helps you stay fuller for longer). Several studies have found that eating chia seeds helps to boost ALA, an important inflammation-reducing omega-3 fatty acid, in the blood. Include them in your diet via smoothies, chia pudding, or in homemade energy snacks.

Pumpkin Seeds

Rich in phytosterols that can help lower cholesterol, pumpkin seeds are commonly consumed as a snack. They are great sources of B-vitamins, iron, magnesium, protein, and zinc, among several other nutrients. Eating pumpkin seeds may also promote healthy sleeping patterns and decrease risk of depression because of the L-tryptophan content. Additionally, they help fight kidney stone formation and reduce inflammation.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are complete vegetarian protein sources, containing all the essential amino acids that the body cannot make. Studies indicate that the protein quality of hemp seeds is better than most plant-based sources. Hemp seeds contain insoluble and soluble fiber, and they are rich in vitamins A and E, both of which contribute to a healthier complexion. It’s also worth noting that hemp seeds contain vitamin D, which maintains bone structure and regulates calcium in the body.

Sesame Seeds

Perfect for protecting bone health, sesame seeds are chock full of calcium. Sesame seeds are commonly consumed in Asia and in some Western countries in the form of tahini. Sesame seeds contain lignans known as sesamin, which gets converted into another lignan, enterolactone. Low levels of enterolactone have been associated with breast cancer and heart disease. Additionally, sesame seeds are rich in zinc, iron, manganese, phosphorus, copper, and calcium.

Flaxseeds

One tablespoon of flaxseeds exceeds the recommended daily intake of omega-3s, which help to reduce inflammation. Like chia seeds, flaxseeds also contain ALA and they are fiber superstars. The high fiber content works to establish healthy digestion and the lignans also help regulate bowel movements.

Sunflower Seeds

Raw sunflower seeds can be extremely beneficial because they aren’t roasted, salted, and coated in added flavors and preservatives. They are rich in zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, protein, folate, and vitamins B6 & E. There’s a compound in sunflower seeds that helps block an enzyme that constricts blood vessels. This defense allows blood vessels to relax and naturally lower blood pressure levels areas a result. Additionally, sunflower seeds contain unsaturated fatty acids like linoleic acid, which the body uses to make a compound that assists with lowering both blood pressure levels and cholesterol.
