There is a specific spot on your face that, when pressed and massaged, can have surprisingly positive results. It all comes down to finding the right spot, which is the valley between your eyebrows. See the photo below:

Massage this point for about 45 seconds. Plastic rings around six packs are killing marine life. Here's a company that is making edible, eco-friendly six pack rings.

Americans drink a lot of beer. Other countries consume copious amounts of alcohol, but 6.3 million gallons of beer a year is a hefty amount. Half that amount is sold in cans, which can be held together by the plastic rings. These plastic rings get discarded, can end up in the ocean, and can strangle marine life or clog their digestive systems.

Saltwater Brewery in Florida targets a large community of surfers, fishermen, and ocean lovers. We Believers, a small New York agency, teamed up with the Florida brewery to develop edible six pack rings, which are made from wheat and barley. The new design is as strong and supportive as the plastic rings, but is healthy and safe for marine life to consume, should it end up in the ocean. It is still in the early stages of development, but prototypes were made and sold at Florida events, Saltwater Brewery’s Beer Garden, and other venues. Consumers got the chance to see this new product; some even took a bite for themselves!

Hopefully this idea will catch on and more craft breweries and soda companies will start making a difference. The more this catches on, the easier it will be to manufacture and obtain. The little guy can always make a difference.

It’s Cinco de Mayo, which means it’s time to smash the avocado, make some salsa, cut some lime wedges (maybe a few extra for those tequila shots), grill or sauté veggies for fajitas, and make your favorite Mexican dish. Despite what many think, Cinco de Mayo is not a crippling day for vegans or vegetarians. There are endless possibilities that are just as good, if not healthier and better, than their meaty opponents. Get creative and see what flavors you can place in the foldable, versatile, vehicle that is a tortilla.

Before we continue, let’s take a second to note that Cinco de Mayo is an unofficial, regional holiday in Puebla, Mexico. It’s a day that has been transformed by Americans into a day of drinking and Mexican-themed shenanigans. Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the Battle of Puebla, actually occurred 52 years later than the actual Mexican Independence Day of September 16. Regardless, Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity to steep yourself in Mexican-American culture and cuisine, so get to cooking!

If you don’t feel like hitting the floor after the fourth tequila shot and would much rather eat yourself into a food coma (is it coincidental that coma is the word for eat in Spanish???), it’s important to have a variety of dishes that range from hot to cold, spicy to mild. Dips are always an important part of a fiesta. Try a tomatillo salsa or an avocado mango salsa, and whip up a mild guacamole to soothe the palate.

Now for the main dish, the pièce de résistance. This dish can either be labor-intensive or a quick fix. You can make veggie tacos, enchiladas, or you can get a little fancy with a spaghetti squash burrito bowl. There are all kinds of flavorful Mexican mains that you can make and put your own spin on.

After dinner you are faced with the crucial decision of whether or not you want a desert. Who are we kidding? Deserts are always delicious and a must, especially at a party! Try this vegan flan to add a bit of sweetness to the end of your meal. After you’ve delighted yourself with desert, throw back a non-alcoholic margarita (even do this during dinner) and break out the music to be merry and dance the night away. Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody!

Plants have been supplying us with oxygen for, to put it mildly, quite some time now. Now one plant can charge our smartphones or tablets! One of the greenest forms of technology has arrived in the form of the Bioo Lite, a revolutionary design by Arkyne Technologies. By using a small and compact design, the Bioo Lite harnesses electricity from the process of photosynthesis. The process that plants use to live can now provide us with clean energy, enough for 2-3 full charges a day! Simply plug your device into the USB port and let the charging begin. Charging our devices has become a part of our everyday lives, and now it can be done quite a bit greener.

Sprouts are some of the best nutritional superfoods, which contain all sorts of health benefits. While sprouts are complex, in that they have many enzymes, vitamins, essential fatty acids, and a lot of fiber, they are quite simple to grow. You don’t need a green thumb to grow sprouts. You don’t need soil, which has been composted by worms, because sprouts don’t grow in soil. You don’t even need to leave your kitchen to grow them; well, you need to go get the sprouting seeds from a health food or gardening store. All you need is a few glass jars (Mason jars are great), cheesecloth or sieve, water, and sprouting seeds.

What is a sprout? Sprouts are plants, which are in the process of germinating. Grains, nuts, seeds, or legumes have a lot of nutrients, which don’t release until the sprouting begins. In fact, enzyme inhibitors and phytic acid are neutralized after a seed sprouts. Phytic acid impairs the absorption of iron, zinc, and calcium. When you ingest the sprouts, you have a better chance of increasing digestibility because they help decrease complex sugars that cause gas. They also help alkalize the body

When it comes to sprouting, you may not know what you want to sprout. Two of the most popular varieties are mung bean and alfalfa sprouts. Many people like alfalfa because it contains bone-building calcium, magnesium, iron, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K. Since folate aids red blood cell development and helps with digestion, people eat alfalfa or bean sprouts for high amounts of it.

To begin sprouting, put a few tablespoons of sprouting seeds in a glass jar, make sure the seeds are covered with about two inches of filtered water, cover with a sieve or cheesecloth, and let them sit on the counter overnight. Drain the water the following morning and then fill with more filtered water. Repeat this process for a few days and you’ll have beautiful, nutrient-dense sprouts to eat. Drain them and store the glass jar in your refrigerator, but make sure to eat the sprouts within a few days. Let us know how sprouting worked for you!

Grow Produce From Kitchen Scraps https://www.dherbs.com/articles/general-topics/grow-produce-from-kitchen-scraps/ Thu, 14 Apr 2016 18:39:24 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=52333

Want to start growing a vegetable garden? It’s easier than you think. You don’t have to go to the store and buy seeds, plant them, then worry if they will ever sprout. Starting a garden with your kitchen scraps is an easy way to grow your vegetables. Don’t discard scraps like pineapple tops, celery bases, onion tops, green onion ends, or ginger roots because they are your future plants.

Before you decide to grow your garden, you need to make sure that you have healthy soil. If the soil is dry and void of nutrients, the plants will not grow. Rather than going to the store to buy fertilizer or mulch, you can easily compost your soil by using produce scraps (the ones you aren’t going to plant, of course). The best way to avoid trashing your produce scraps is to keep a sealed container next to the area where you prep meals. Put banana peels, citrus rinds, apple cores, herbal tea bags, onion skins, or melon rinds, among other items, in the container until it gets full. Make sure you have a good lid because it will start to smell. Using a spade or shovel, dig a hole or multiple holes in the soil, and dump the scraps in. Chop the scraps up with your spade or shovel, cover them with dirt, and let the composting begin. Do this to the entire area where you are going to plant your garden.

When you put these produce scraps under the soil to compost, worms journey to their new food. Having worms in your soil means that it is healthy. Earthworms are like free farm help because they turn the soil, meaning they bring down organic matter from the top and combine it with the soil underneath. They essentially eat your produce scraps, which you buried, and transform them into valuable fertilizer.

Start growing your produce scraps in water, just like the video indicates, at the same time you begin composting your soil. Your soil will be healthy and ready for planting in about a week, which is the time your scraps need to spend in water in the window sill. By following the steps in the video, you’ll be able to start a garden from your kitchen scraps. Let us know if you have any other produce items that you’ve grown from kitchen scraps.

Saying goodbye to the magical bean that gives us caffeine can be difficult. Whether you quit drinking coffee to break an addiction, improve your overall mood, or decrease anxiety, we applaud and support you on your endeavor. Maybe you had to give up coffee because you participated in our Full Body Cleanse and are looking for coffee alternatives. Whatever the case, one of the best reasons to quit drinking coffee and start drinking natural, healthier alternatives that give you an energy boost is to get a better night’s sleep.

First off, coffee (caffeine in general) is a stimulant. Anyone who has felt the adrenaline spikes of coffee knows that it keeps you awake, sometimes more than you’d like. Just as flying across time zones can disrupt your internal clock, so can coffee. Drinking coffee 6 hours before you go to sleep, which a lot of people do, can shorten sleep time by an hour. After a day at the office, you need those long-awaited zzz’s. Is coffee worth having an irregular sleep pattern?

According to about 54% of the population, a cup of Joe is a necessary part of the day. Just as we enjoy a second cup of fresh squeezed juice later in the day, people who drink coffee need a second cup, which is the real ruiner of a good night’s sleep. The reason for this is because caffeine interrupts the flow of melatonin to the brain. This is the hormone that sends us to bed. Research indicates that coffee halves the body’s production of melatonin. You could sleep five hours or seven hours. What would you prefer? We’re betting on more hours of sleep.

If you need a natural energizer to kickstart your day, we have several coffee alternatives. These differ from coffee because they either have electrolytes, antioxidants, iron, or magnesium, all of which help expand the blood vessels to create a natural energy rush. Coconut water is rich in potassium and electrolytes, providing you with more benefits than Gatorade or Powerade. You won’t need caffeine if you drink hibiscus tea. It gives you a healthy dose of iron and thiamin, which converts your food into energy. Regulate your oxygen and blood flow by drinking beet juice, and be energized during your workouts, too! Pureed banana with water/ice will increase your “happy” neurotransmitters to fuel you throughout the day. Additionally, bananas pack a potassium punch and are easily digestible. Finally, an apple cider vinegar and water solution is the one of the best energizers we know of. Not only will you be getting a natural, caffeine-free energy rush, which will keep you at a healthy energized level throughout the day, but you will also be getting a better night’s sleep.

These 10 Steps Could Save You From Your Next Heart Attack

February is National Heart Health month, so it’s a perfect time to talk about one of the world’s greatest killers. Each year, heart disease kills about 610,000 Americans and causes more deaths than all cancers combined.

Because the American diet is so disastrous for your health, the odds are that you yourself are already on the path to heart disease. In fact, 47% of all Americans have one of the three big heart disease risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking.

Fortunately, the path to heart disease isn’t engraved in stone. For those looking to take control of their heart health, we have some guidelines below.

1. Quit Smoking

Smoking is the single most important thing you can do to decrease your heart disease risk. According to several studies, smokers are four times as likely to contract the disease, which means they’re four times as likely to have a stroke or a heart attack. If you’ve had issues quitting in the past, consider trying our Anti-smoking formula. It’s been used by many ex-smokers who’s found great results.

2. Remove Salt from Your House

Salt is a subtle beast that increases blood pressure and damages your cardiovascular system. The worse yet, it is in everything we eat from Starbucks Frappuccinos to Macaroni and Cheese. In light of this, we recommend you remove salt from your house. No more “when it rains it pours” malarkey. Those days need to be over. Now.

It might feel drastic to eliminate salt from your kitchen, but it’s not. Sodium will turn up anywhere because it’s used in everything.

3. Move for 30 Minutes

As this famous Youtube video reminds us, getting up out of your seat for 30 minutes a day can transform your health. Exercising helps improve all your body’s systems — and should absolutely be mandatory thing in everyone’s daily life. The longer and harder you exercise, the better it is for your health. At the very least, you should be walking for 30 minutes a day.

Getting a fitness tracker can help motivate you to move a little bit more. We challenge you to find your own system and stick with it.  Your life depends on it.

4. Eat the Rainbow

Fruits and vegetables are cardio-protective foods, full of antioxidants. Antioxidants are natural substances that help prevent and delay damage to cells.  Consuming an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables helps repair damage to the cardiovascular system caused by high blood pressure, high blood glucose, and high cholesterol. Try eating a variety of colors every day, with every meal.  Eating green alone can do wonders.

5. Manage Your Stress

According to several studies, stress, depression, anxiety, hostility, anger and impatience can increase your odds of dying from heart disease. Managing your heart health means managing your stress. One of the greatest ways to reduce stress is through breathing exercises. Try this: inhale for a slow 4 seconds, hold for 8, and then exhale for another 4 seconds. Repeat until you are calm and your mind is quiet.

You can do this 16-second cycle at any time. Give it a try the next time you find yourself stressing.

6. Manage your Snoring

It may sound strange, but poor heart health and snoring are connected. See, they both are signs of sleep apnea, a disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing or shallow breath while you sleep. In other words, if you suffer from sleep apnea, your body struggles to get the oxygen it needs, which forces your cardiovascular system into overdrive.

7. Replace Butter with Extra-virgin Olive Oil

Here we have a change that has almost zero impact on the flavor of your food and can powerfully reduce your exposure to cholesterol issues. Unlike other types of oil, olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats, a “good fat” known to lower cholesterol.

Because Italian olive oil tends to have some canola mixed in there, we recommend that you try a cold-pressed Californian type.

8. Get a Dog

The CDC and the NIH both conducted heart-related studies and found that pet owners had lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels than everyone else. They also found those who had already suffered from a heart attack had better recovery rates when they owned a pet. Scientists believe pets reduce stress and, in the case of dogs, encourage their owners to get out and exercise more.

9. Drink Green Tea

Countless studies have shown that green tea dramatically reduces your risk of heart disease. One large study found that those who drank more than 4 cups of green tea a day reduced their risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke by 25%. In fact, green tea is so powerful that many doctors recommend that smokers drink it to help offset the effects of the bad habit.

10. Brush and Floss Twice a Day

Several studies have found a relationship between those who practice good oral hygiene and those who have good heart health. Although no one’s entirely sure, there is evidence that shows the same bacteria found in gum disease was the same as the one’s found in diseased arteries. All of this is to say that to keep your heart healthy, you’ve got to keep your teeth clean.

If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the US would save:

  • 100 Billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months.
  • 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock — enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year.
  • 70 million gallons of gas — enough to fuel all of the drivers of Canada and Mexico combined.
  • 3 million acres of land — an area twice the size of Delaware
  • 33 tons of antibiotics.

My favorite statistic is this: According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.

See how easy it is to make an impact?
