Infomation about Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata

What Is Alopecia Areata

Alopecia is a condition that causes random round patches of baldness or severe thinning of the hair.  It’s considered to be an auto-immune disorder because your immune system is what attacks the hair follicle.  Alopecia can occur on your scalp or anywhere else on the body.  It’s more common for people to experience the condition at a young age, however anyone at any age can be affected by alopecia. The severity of hair loss symptoms can differ from person to person.  In some cases, hair can grow back, but others can experience permanent hair loss.

Signs Of Alopecia Areata

The most common sign of alopecia is severe hair loss in a specific area of the scalp.  All the signs of alopecia include:

  • Loss of Hair on scalp
  • Loss of facial hair (eyebrows, eyelashes, beards, mustaches)
  • Nail issues (white spots, dents, change of texture, lack of luster)

What Causes Alopecia Areata

The causes for alopecia can vary.  Even though it is an auto-immune disorder in which your immune system attacks the production of the hair follicle, there are underlying factors.  One of the main causes is due to genetics, as the condition can just be hereditary.  If auto-immune diseases run in your family, you have a higher chance of having alopecia.

  • Genetics
  • Allergic reactions
  • Medical treatments
  • Traction Alopecia (strenuous hairstyles that contribute to balding/hair thinning)
  • Hormonal issues
  • Excess physical and/or emotional stress

Dherbs Approach...adjusting your diet is always key!

Natural Remedies

Although there’s no definitive treatment for alopecia, we believe that you can heal your body with the proper nutrition and right lifestyle changes.

  • Adjusting your diet can help reboot your body so it functions properly.  Nutrient-dense foods help promote hair growth and can stimulate the hair follicle into producing hair.
  • Scalp massages help stimulate growth.  Using natural remedies like rosemary extracts, castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil to massage into the scalp helps increase the blood flow to the hair follicles.
  • Using Indian Gooseberry or Amla Pulp mixed with lemon juice is a regimen that is high in Vitamin C and helps with hair loss.  Leaving the solution on your head overnight helps encourage hair to grow.
  • Other natural hair remedies include using onion juice on scalp, egg and olive oil in your conditioner or mayonnaise.
